What people love about wildlife tours in tanzania.

The safari to Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater and Conservation Area was excellent. The guide, Lewis, was quite knowledgeable, the accommodation better than other camp sites, and the meals very delicious. It also helped that we saw all five of the Big 5! In addition, we saw baby elephants rolling about in the mud, a pack of spotted hyena dealing with a carcass, and a male and female lion attempting to mate. Lake Manyara was a little disappointing because the heavy rains had stirred up the mud in the water and discouraged the birds from feeding there. I also felt that the guide was not as informative as Lewis. The visit to Materuni Falls was good although very muddy because of the wet weather. The food was excellent and the coffee tour very lively and entertaining.

• Airlines have varying weight restrictions on baggage. Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage; be advised that you are responsible for any such costs.
• Contact your airline for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that our travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on safari vehicles.
• Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag. Safari luggage restrictions are strict and strongly enforced. • The Tanzanian government has a strict ban on plastic bags. As of June 1, 2019, it is illegal to use, sell, or carry plastic bags anywhere in the country under the new law, and violators will face charges including high fines or imprisonment. Please bring reusable cloth bags if you plan to go shopping on tour, and do not pack any plastic bags, including small resealable bags.
• At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov .
• Local governments may require proof of a yellow fever vaccination (often referred to as a yellow card) or a statement of medical exemption from the vaccine. Game viewing by car is the main tour activity at African Heroes Tours. Safari tours are operated using 4WD vehicles, all designed to provide for comfortable sight-seeing, photography and game viewing, with sliding windows and a pop-up roof. We have a big fleet of safari vehicles (about 300), predominantly 4-wheel drive (4WD) with passenger cabin configuration of 6-window seats and an extra seat with no direct window access, plus a seat in front next to the driver.

Our safari tours broadly range from mainstream itineraries based on mid-scale facilities, to high-end tours complete with exclusive accommodation facilities and specially appointed vehicles.

The classic safari tours which involve accommodating guests in lodges and permanent tented camps form the main part of our operations, while the more adventurous mobile camping safaris, operated by our camping unit, are developing into a very popular product.

Famous for the great migration and wide-open savannah grasslands teeming with wildlife. The most iconic African landscape, the plains of the Serengeti roll on in a seemingly endless sea. The oldest and most popular national park in Tanzania, the Serengeti National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Witnessing the great wildebeest migration is one of the most exhilarating wildlife spectacles on earth. The sheer scale of almost 2 million wildebeest, zebra, Thomson's gazelle, and other antelopes, crossing the vast plains is awe-inspiring. These herbivores in turn attract an array of predators, making this one of the best places in Africa to witness this daily life-and-death struggle. 

Ngorongoro Crater - The Garden of Eden 

The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest unflooded caldera in the world. It is also home to the highest density of wild animals found in one area in Africa, making it a must-see safari experience. The surrounding Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of the best safari destinations to see predators, especially lions. 

Zanzibar - The Spice Islands 

Zanzibar is a true beach paradise with an incredible cultural mosaic that stretches back through history. Tarangire National Park - Off the Beaten Track

Tarangire is best known for its huge elephant population and tree-climbing lions, as well as being home to a huge variety of birds, including the superb starling, yellow-necked spurfowl, and pygmy falcon to mention a few. Tarangire National Park is scattered with baobab trees and termite mounds, adding to its unique landscape. Tarangire is said to host one of the world's highest concentrations of elephants per square kilometre. Tarangire is also inhabited by Tanzania's second-highest concentration of wildlife during the dry months. 

Lake Manyara National Park - The Loveliest Lake in Africa 

This scenic national park includes diverse habitats that support an incredible array of wildlife. Famous for tree-climbing lions, Lake Manyara is also known for huge flamingo flocks and other birds attracted to the shallow lake.  

Mount Kilimanjaro - The Roof of Africa 

Located just south of the Kenyan border, Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa. First summited in 1861, Kilimanjaro has captivated explorers and adventurers ever since. Today, tourists can hike to the peak or enjoy sweeping vistas from Mt Meru in Arusha. At 5,895 km above sea level, Kili is sure to take your breath away.  

Southern Tanzanian Safari Circuit 

The Southern Tanzanian Safari circuit is vast, untouched, remote, and teeming with a diverse array of wildlife. The Southern Safari Circuit includes the Mikumi National Park, Ruaha National Park, Nyerere National Park (previously Selous Game Reserve), and the Udzungwa Mountains National Park. 

Mikumi National Park - The Little Serengeti

Easily accessible from Dar es Salaam, Mikumi National Park is Tanzania’s fourth largest park. Mikumi’s main safari circuit crosses the Mkata Floodplain, an area known locally as the ‘little Serengeti’ because of the open grasslands punctuated by stands of acacia and baobabs. Often quiet, visitors to Mikumi can expect good game viewing including elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and a whole host of other plains wildlife, including good numbers of lions and spotted hyenas. 

Ruaha National Park - Tanzania's Best-Kept Safari Secret

Although Ruaha National Park is Tanzania’s largest national park, it is also one of the least visited. Covering over 20,000km², Ruaha’s wilderness feel, with few other tourists, is the big draw card. The dramatic scenery is defined by the Ruaha River on the southern border, which is the lifeblood of the reserve. Buffalo, zebra, impala, giraffe, greater and lesser kudu as well as roan and sable antelope are some of the species you will encounter, in amongst the largest elephant population in Tanzania. Ruaha is also famous for unusually large prides of lions, leopards, cheetahs, striped and spotted hyenas as well as the endangered African wild dog. Ruaha is a popular safari destination with regular safari enthusiasts who want to escape the crowds of the Northern Safari Circuit, and for those in the know, it is considered to be Tanzania’s best-kept safari secret. 

Nyerere National Park - True Wilderness

The Selous Game Reserve, renamed Nyerere National Park, in Tanzania is a remote and underrated paradise. Despite receiving fewer tourists than other famous Tanzanian reserves attract, the Nyerere National Park is well worth a visit. Nyerere forms part of the largest wilderness areas in Africa, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its biodiversity. It is home to one of the world's largest concentrations of big game, including elephants, lions, giraffes, hippos, and buffaloes. Nyerere is considered one of the last true wilderness areas, and a haven for those looking to get off the beaten track. 

Udzungwa Mountains National Park - Afrca's Galapagos

An ecotourism haven, the Udzungwa Mountains National Park is home to a large diversity of indigenous species. This pristine mountainous region of rich rainforests and beautiful scenery is one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. The national park is comprised of savannah vegetation, Mkata flooded plains, artificial hippo pool which provide water for the wildlife in the park such as buffaloes, zebras, elephants, giraffes, lions, leopards, wild dogs, greater kudus, birds like guinea fowls, marabou stork, black bellied bustard, yellow throated long claw, blacksmith plover, bateleur eagles among others.

Activities in Mikumi national park

• Game drives where you will have great scenic views of animals like elephants, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, impalas, sable antelopes among others grazing along the road sides or gathered around the artificial hippo pools, predators like lions, leopards among others if you are lucky, vegetation types, birds among others.
• Bird watching , Mikumi national park is a home of over 400 bird species including migratory species from Europe, savannah birds and water species. During bird watching you will be able to spot birds like open billed stork, black bellied bustard, African spoonbill, malachite kingfisher, purple crested turaco, shelleys sunbird among others.
• Guided nature walks where you will move around the park on foot with an armed park ranger to protect you from any danger. During the nature walk you will have spectacular views of animals, bird species, mountain ranges, listen to sweet sounds of birds singing in the trees, enjoy the peaceful and quiet environment among others.  

9. Gombe national park

Gombe national park is the smallest national park located in the western part of Tanzania at the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika at the border of Tanzania and Congo. The park is famously known for harboring the endangered chimpanzees, other primates like red tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, animals like forest pigs, antelopes, different bird species like a crowned eagle, peters twinspot, double toothed barbet, Ross’s turaco among others. Gombe national park is the protected area where the primatologist Jane Goodal started her research activities about the behaviors of chimpanzees in the 1960s.

Gombe national park offers interesting activities like chimpanzee trekking where you will be able to spend time with the habituated chimpanzee families in their natural environment, bird watching where you will view different migratory, forest and aquatic species, spot fishing where you will use a catch and release method to catch different fish types and guided nature walks where you will explore the park on foot and get an opportunity to get close and personal with animals in the natural habitats, enjoy the cool breeze, relax your mind, breath fresh air, listen to birds singing, take photos, view the sunrise or sunset among others.

10. Mahale mountains national park

Mahale mountains national park is situated on the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika in the remote southern part of Kigoma town. The national park borders with Lake Tanganyika which is the second largest and deepest fresh water lake in the world. Mahale mountains national park is a home of various attractions including wildlife like large populations of chimpanzees, other primates like vervet monkeys, yellow baboons, red colobus monkeys, animals like wild dogs, lions, roan antelopes, buffaloes, elephants, zebras, squirrels, porcupines, different bird species like Ross’s turaco, giant kingfisher, bamboo warbler, crested guinea fowl, vegetations types like miombo woodland, montane forest, montane grassland, riverine forest, Mahale mountains, Kasonge forest among others.

Activities in Mahale national park

Chimpanzee trekking , this is the most popular activity carried out in the park that gives visitors an opportunity to move around the park on foot in search of the habituated chimpanzee families. during chimpanzee trekking you will have great views of colorful birds, plant and tree species, beautiful scenery, other primates like yellow baboons and once the chimpanzees are found you will be allowed to spend one hour with them in their natural habitat which gives you an opportunity to learn about their behaviors, habits, watch them feeding, hunting, resting among others which gives you lifetime memories.

Mahale national park  offers other activities like bird watching where you will view different bird species including forest, water, migratory birds, guided nature walks where you will explore the park on foot with the company of an armed park ranger, sport fishing where you will use a catch and release method to catch different fish species, s norkeling which is done in lake Tanganyika and helps you to cool off and get close to underwater creatures, Kayaking activity where you will maneuver through the waterways in a small water vessel.

11. Mkomazi National Park

Mkomazi national park is situated in the northeastern part of Tanzania on the Kenyan border in Kilimanjaro and Tanga region. Mkomazi national park shares its northern border with Tsavo national park in Kenya which means that you will be able to view migratory animals from Tsavo Park and it also offers refugee for the endangered black rhinos and wild dogs which were successfully reintroduced in the 1990s. Mkomazi national park offers interesting activities like game drives where you will view animals like elands, oryx, dik dik, zebras, hartebeest, lesser kudu, bird watching where you will view migratory and endemic birds like European roller, ostrich, shelleys starling, vulturine guinea fowl, martial eagle, scaly chatterer, guided nature walk activity where you will have spectacular views of wildlife species like birds, plant and tree species, animals at a close range. 

12. Saadani National Park

Saadani National Park is the only protected area where the bush meets the ocean because it’s located on the shores of Indian Ocean between Dar es Salaam and Tanga. Saadani national park is comprised of attractions like Wami River, beautiful beaches, tall savannah, mangrove forests, scattered palm trees, wildlife including animals like wildebeests, greater kudus, elands, elephants, lions, leopards, reedbucks, red duikers, warthogs, giraffes, waterbucks, sable antelopes, hippos, bird species like mangrove kingfisher, African skimmer, long crested eagle, bateleur eagle among others.

Saadani national park offers amazing activities such as game drive where you will be able to view different animals grazing in the open savannah plains, boat safari which is carried out on Wami River and gives you an opportunity to view animals drinking like elephants, lions, buffaloes drinking water along the shores, hippos and crocodiles in water, water birds like pied and malachite kingfisher, ground hornbill, guided nature walks where you will have close views of animals, listen to birds singing, feel the cool breeze, view butterflies, plant and tree species and you can also engage in bird watching where bird lovers will be able to spot migratory, water and riverine bird species like purple heron, little bittern, African skimmer, greater flamingos, crowned eagle among others. 

13. Mount Kilimanjaro national park

Mount Kilimanjaro national park is situated near Moshi city in the northern part of Tanzania , south of Kenya border. The national park harbors the remarkable snowcapped mountain Kilimanjaro which is the highest mountain in Africa standing at an elevation of 5,895 meters. The park also harbors different animals including elephants, elands, bushbucks, leopards, hyenas, buffaloes, forest duikers, tree hyrax, aardvark, crested porcupine, primates like blue monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, baboons, bird species like natrina trogon, rose turaco, African pygmy kingfisher, African pitta, silvery cheeked hornbill, white necked raven among others.

Day1:   Arrival day. You will be met at the airport immediately upon landing and transferred by private vehicle to your first night’s accommodation. We will meet as a group in the evening for a welcome presentation followed by dinner. (Accommodations: Arusha Serena Hotel)

Day 2:  After breakfast pick ups and departure for Tarangire National Park in time for lunch at the lodge. Followed by an afternoon game drive. (Accommodations: Tarangire Sopa Lodge)  

Day  3 & 4:   Full days with twice daily game drives in Tarangire National Park. (Accommodations: Tarangire Sopa Lodge)

Day 5: Breakfast followed by a short game drive en-route to the airstrip for a short flight. After a short flight you are transfered to the next lodge for check-in and lunch followed by an afternoon game drive (Accommodations: Lake Ndutu Luxury Tented Lodge) 

Day 6-8:  Enjoy 3 full days in Ndutu with twice daily game drives to witness the great migration, one of the world’s top wildlife events. (Lake Ndutu Luxury Tented Lodge)

Day 9:  Morning game drive followed by breakfast. Check-out and game drive en-route to our next camp arriving for lunch. Checkin followed by afternoon game drive in Serengeti National Park. (Accommodations: Nyikani Central Serengeti Camp).

Day 12: Morning game drive followed by breakfast at the lodge. Freshen up and check-out from your rooms and transfer to the airstrip to board flight back to Arusha. On arrival, you will be met and transferred for day rooms at Arusha Serena Hotel till 1800 hrs. Depending on international flights departure time, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for outbound departure. (Accommodations: Day Room at the Serena Hotel Arusha)
