Customer Reviews

Very happy with my item

Bought as a birthday gift for my daughter. She is very happy with it.

Well made and does the job. It is well suited to being a gift as part of the cost goes into the premium box it comes in. I don't find the small light on it an issue

This is a really solid product except the watch charger sticks out a bit too much causing watches with some Nike sports straps to lift off and stop charging

Get 30% off Journey’s new MagSafe-compatible, 3-in-1 wireless charger

By David Snow • 11:00 am, December 30, 2021

Journey's new 3-in-1 wireless charging station is MagSafe-compatible.

This MagSafe charger post is brought to you by Journey, a brand of Alogic.

You probably have cables to charge your iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch. But wouldn’t it be great to charge them all at once, in one place, like on your nightstand or desk? Without a bunch of wires? With the handsome new Journey 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station, you can.

Journey’s newest charger also serves as a stand for your gadgets — and it looks good doing it. And, by the way, if you act fast, you can get the new charging station for 30% off with the coupon X30.

Journey 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station: Convenience and style

Journey 3-in-1 charger allows hands-free functionality. Feel free to take a FaceTime call.

The company’s first 3-in-1 charger

Journey created the new 3-in-1 MagSafe-compatible wireless charging station to help you power up your iPhone 12 or 13, AirPods or AirPods Pro with wireless charging case, and Apple Watch (all models) — all at once, if you like. It’s a stylish and convenient addition to your nightstand, desk or side table by the front door.

The charger is the latest release in Journey’s growing range of MagSafe-compatible wireless chargers, the company said.

MagSafe compatibility equals convenience

Journey’s 3-in-1 wireless charging device works with Apple’s MagSafe technology, built into its latest handsets. The charger’s strong magnetic hold auto-aligns your iPhone 12 or 13 and securely holds it in place. And yet it’s still easy to snatch it back off the magnetic surface when you need it.

Of course, the charger works well with iPhones in MagSafe-compatible cases.

The charger requires just one USB-C cable connection between it and a wall charger. All charging of your devices is wireless. That cuts down on cable clutter, keeping your space neat.

Nice touches

Journey included a subtle white LED indicator that lets you know when your device batteries are charging, just to take away any doubt about whether you placed the device on the charger in just the right spot.

And speaking of placing devices on the charger, it’s also a good-looking stand for your gadgets. You can place your phone in portrait (vertical) or landscape (horizontal) orientation, and even rotate it 360 degrees. You can use it hands-free while it charges.

Meanwhile, your AirPods charging case and Apple Watch can power up at the same time, without being in the way. The Apple Watch sits neatly on a platform behind the magnetic iPhone charger. The AirPods sit in a shallow indentation in the stand’s base.

The charger’s base is sturdy, with nonslip feet that means it will stay put while it holds your devices. And it comes in your choice of two colors: black or white.

With a compact form factor, the charger is perfect for a small space like a bedside table. Also: note how few wires you see.

Designed for battery health and longevity

Journey’s new charger also helps keep your devices’ batteries healthy while charging fast. Over-current protection, over-voltage protection, over-temperature protection and foreign-object detection all help reduce wear on your device’s battery.

Plus, Journey said its new charging technology charges your phone two times more efficiently than many other chargers.

Built-in Apple Watch charger

The built-in Apple Watch charger works with all models and sizes of everyone’s favorite wearable.

What do the lights on my wireless charger mean

Table of Contents

When you’re using a wireless charger, one of the most important things to understand is what the lights on your wireless charger mean. Depending on the type of charger you’re using, the lights may indicate different things. Knowing what your wireless charger lights mean can help you better understand and troubleshoot any problems you may be having with your device.

For example, if your charger is a Qi charger (the most common type of wireless charger), the lights will typically indicate whether or not your device is charging correctly. When the LED light is green or blue, it usually means that your device is charging correctly and you can continue to use it with no problems. However, if the LED light is red or blinking, it usually means that something is wrong and you need to troubleshoot the issue in order to get your device charging properly again.

Some wireless chargers may also have additional lights that indicate when your device has reached its full charge or when it’s time to remove it from the charger. With these types of chargers, the LED light will usually be green when your device is fully charged and will turn off when it’s time to remove it.

It’s also important to note that some chargers may have additional lights that serve different purposes. For example, some chargers may have an LED light that indicates when the charger itself has power or when the battery level on your device is low. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the lights on your specific charger so you know exactly what they indicate.

Overall, understanding what the lights on your wireless charger mean is an important part of properly using and troubleshooting any issues with your device. By familiarizing yourself with your specific charger’s lights and what they indicate, you can ensure that you’re getting the most out of your device and keeping it charged at all times.

Can you leave wireless charger on all night

The short answer is yes, you can leave your wireless charger on all night. However, it is important to understand the potential risks associated with leaving your device on a wireless charger overnight.

Wireless charging is a great way to keep your devices topped up without having to plug them in direct. It uses electromagnetic induction to transmit energy from the charging pad to your device, and it’s a safe and convenient way to charge your phone or tablet.

Although wireless charging is generally safe, leaving your device on the charger overnight can have some potential risks. Your device could become overcharged if left on the charger too long, which can damage the battery or cause it to overheat. This can shorten the life of your device and may even lead to serious safety issues if not addressed right away. Additionally, if you are using an older version of wireless charging technology, it may draw more power than necessary, leading to higher electric bills.

To prevent any potential risks from leaving your device on a wireless charger overnight, it is best to unplug it once the charge has reached capacity. Most modern phones and tablets are designed with safeguards that will prevent them from becoming overcharged when left on a charger for an extended period of time. However, if you must leave your device on the charger all night, be sure to use a reputable brand and check for any safety certifications before purchasing.

It’s also important to keep in mind that wireless chargers require direct contact with your device in order to work effectively. If there is any debris between the two, such as dust or lint, this can interfere with the connection and cause problems with charging. Therefore, make sure that both surfaces are clean before placing your device on the charger each night.

Overall, you can leave your wireless charger on all night as long as you take proper precautions. Be sure to use a reliable brand and keep both surfaces clean before each use. Additionally, keep in mind that leaving your device on the charger for an extended period of time can result in overcharging or damage to the battery, so it’s best to unplug it once it is fully charged.

Why is my wireless charger blinking and not charging

If your wireless charger is blinking but not charging your device, then you may be experiencing a common issue. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, such as incorrect positioning of the device on the charger, incorrect wireless charger settings, or a damaged charging port.

First, make sure that you are properly positioning your device on the wireless charger. It is important to place your device in the center of the pad, and not off to the side. Additionally, make sure that you are using the correct settings for your wireless charger. Depending on what type of charger you have, you may need to enable certain settings in order for it to charge your device properly.

If you have checked both of these and your wireless charger is still blinking and not charging, then it could be due to a damaged charging port. If this is the case, then it would require a professional inspection to determine if the port needs to be replaced or repaired.

If you are still having issues with your wireless charger after trying these steps, then it is always best to consult a professional for further assistance. A qualified technician will be able to assess the issue and advise you on the best course of action.

Does blue light mean fully charged

The answer to the question “” is yes, in most cases. Blue light is a color commonly used to indicate a device is charging or has finished charging. When you plug your phone, laptop, or other electronic device into a charger and the blue light appears on the device, it usually means that the device has reached its full charge and is ready for use.

However, it is important to note that not all devices use blue light as an indicator of a full charge. Some devices may instead use green or other colors to signal a full charge. In some cases, even if a blue light appears when you plug your device in, it may not always mean that the battery is completely charged. It could be an indication that the device is receiving power from the charger but hasn’t yet reached its full capacity.

To be sure that your device has reached its full charge, it is best to look at the battery level indicator on your device or consult the user manual to see what color indicates a full charge. Additionally, some chargers may have indicators showing how much current is being sent through them and whether or not they are supplying power to the device.

In conclusion, blue light often means that a device is fully charged but this may not always be the case. It’s best to check the battery level indicator on your device and consult the user manual to ensure that your device is indeed fully charged before using it.

Bluetooth does not turn on

Insufficient charge, out of range, too many devices connected, faulty bluetooth receiver, battery is low, leds are disconnected from battery, led bulb is broken, hoverboard has low or no charge, loose or broken battery, incorrect button is pressed, uncalibrated sensors, faulty motherboard, needs to be reset, loose wires, broken gyroscope, charger is damaged, battery is damaged, charger port is damaged, hover-1 charger troubleshooting, student-contributed wiki.

An awesome team of students from our education program made this wiki.

Bluetooth speaker does not work

The hoverboard does not respond to bluetooth pairing.

Check that the hoverboard and device you are attempting to connect to both have bluetooth turned on. Once turned on, the hoverboard’s Bluetooth connection will remain on for two minutes. Be sure to connect a device to the hoverboard within this two minute interval. If the connection remains unsuccessful, disconnect the hoverboard from the Bluetooth pairing list on the device and reconnect.

Check the hoverboard for low charge. This is indicated by a red light located between the foot pads. Fully charge the hoverboard. Then attempt to reconnect.

If the hoverboard and device are out of range, Bluetooth pairing will fail. Successful pairing will occur when the hoverboard and the device are less than three feet apart. Attempt to reconnect your device when in proper range.

If the hoverboard still fails to connect, there may be too many devices connected to it. The Hover-1 Charger can connect to one device at a time. If connection remains unsuccessful, disconnect all devices from the hoverboard and reconnect.

If connection is still unsuccessful, the Bluetooth receiver must be replaced. See our Bluetooth speaker replacement guide for assistance. The Bluetooth receiver is located on the circuit board that is removed in step 9.

LED headlights do not work properly

The LED headlights do not turn on .

Your batteries could be running low, which would result in the LEDs not functioning properly. Try fully charging your hoverboard.

Your LEDs wires may have disconnected from the battery. See step 7 of our LED replacement guide to address this issue.

The LED bulb could be broken. See our LED replacement guide to address this issue.

Device will not power on

The hoverboard does not respond to the power button.

Make sure that the hoverboard is charged. If the hoverboard has been charging for a long time but does not turn on, there may be another issue. Please view the Hoverboard fails to charge section if the battery does not hold a charge .

If the power button is responsive when pressed, but the hoverboard does not turn on, you may have issues with the battery. Please look at the Hoverboard fails to charge section.

Some hoverboards turn on when the user steps onto the footpads on the top of the board. The Hover-1 Charger first requires the user to press a button on the rear of the board.

Hoverboard has flashing red lights

LED headlights are flashing red .

The gyroscopic sensor may have become uncalibrated. See our Hoverboard gyroscope sensor board replacement guide to learn how to recalibrate your hoverboard.

The motherboard may have become damaged in some way. Learn how to replace your motherboard in Hover-1 motherboard replacement .

Hoverboard does not balance

The user is unable to stand up properly when mounted on the hoverboard.

One common fix to an unbalanced hoverboard is to reset the system. Start by putting the hoverboard on a flat, level surface. Hold the power button down for five seconds. Wait until the indicator LED lights begin to flash and then release the power button. Let the hoverboard sit like this for 30 seconds. Press the power button once again to turn the hoverboard off. Power on normally.

Disconnected motor wires, gyroscope wires, or motherboard wires may cause performance issues. To check wire connections, you will need to open the device. Please view the first half of this tutorial.

If the resetting procedure has not worked, the hoverboard may have faulty gyroscopes. To determine which gyroscope needs replacement, count how many times the red light in the middle of the hoverboard flashes. If the light flashes seven times, the gyroscope on the battery side needs replacement. If the light flashes eight times, the gyroscope on the motherboard side needs replacement.

If the motherboard needs replacement, the red indicator light will flash one time. Please view Hover-1 motherboard replacement .

Hoverboard fails to charge

The hoverboard does not charge.

Before plugging in the hoverboard, check that the charger is plugged into a working outlet. If the charger is functioning normally, a small light on the charger will turn green. If the board is not fully charged, plugging it in will cause the light to turn red. Once the hoverboard is fully charged, the charger light will turn green.

If the hoverboard does not turn on and the light on the charger remains green, you may have a damaged battery. Please look at the battery replacement guide .

If the charger light does not turn on when plugged in, you may have a broken or disconnected charger port. If the charger does not plug into the port, you may have a jammed or blocked charging port. In both cases please look at this charger port replacement guide .

What should I do if the 3-in-1 wireless station does not charge the Apple watch or earbuds?

journey charger blue light

Applicable for those products

Please Make sure you’re using a Quick Charge 2.0/3.0 (9V/2A) or a Power Delivery wall charger to power the wireless station.

An input of 9V/2A is required for the 2-in-1 or 3-in1 wireless charging stations to allow all devices to be charged simultaneously. When using a lower-powered wall charger such as a normal 5V/2A wall charger, it will not work. The right side of the LED indicator will also flash, indicating unsuccessful charging.

If the issue persists, here are some troubleshooting tips that may help you locate and resolve the problem:

For the Apple watch:

  • Update your Apple watch to the latest OS version.
  • Unplug and plug the Apple watch charger cable to try again.
  • Try another QC or PD (9V/2A) wall charger and a different cable.
  • Remove your watch charger from the wireless station and charge directly from your wall charger.

For earbuds:

  • Ensure your earbuds case supports wireless charging.
  • Remove any protective case, if any.
  • Ensure the Airpods case is centered on the charging pad.

Where can I use the Zoomer Chair?

The Zoomer Chair can be used just about anywhere, indoors and out. It can handle a number of different terrains such as grass, carpet, dirt and more.

Will it fit through my doorways?

In most any cases, yes. Check to be certain your doorway openings are at least 27" wide. Any smaller than that will require you to get off and fold the Zoomer Chair in order to pass through. Businesses (malls, restaurants, etc.) are required to be ADA compliant, with doorways a minimum of 32" wide—no problem for the Zoomer.

What is the Zoomer's weight limit?

The Zoomer Chair is capable of carrying a person weighing up to 275 lbs.

Does it come in a larger size?

The Zoomer Chair is available in only one size. See the Product Specifications section for specific dimensions. The maximum user weight limit is 275 lbs.

I only have one good hand. Is the Zoomer for me?

The Zoomer Chair is a one-handed, joystick-controlled chair. The joystick can even be installed on either side of the chair.

Is a Zoomer right for me if I am handicapped or disabled?

While many people use the Zoomer for many different reasons, the Zoomer Chair is a personal electric vehicle. If you are fully restricted to a sitting position, the Zoomer may not be for you. You must be able to get in and out of the chair.

What’s included with the Zoomer Chair?

The Zoomer Chair will arrive fully assembled out of the box. It will include the chair, a battery and a charger. In addition, it will include the hex key needed should you decide to remove the armrests.

Will Medicare help pay for my Zoomer Chair?

Unfortunately, the Zoomer is not covered by Medicare at this time.

What accessories are available?

Accessories such as a seatback bag, cup/bottle holder, cane holder, spare batteries and spare tires are available.

Will the Zoomer Chair fit under a desk or table?

Whether you are at a restaurant having dinner or just pulling up to your desk to get some work done, one of the great unique features of the Zoomer Chair is that it easily fits under most desks and tables. Since the armrests are only 25.5" above floor level, you can just pull right up as you would a regular chair to any standard table or desk, which will generally be 28" to 30" high. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) dictates that to be compliant, public seating must be a minimum of 27" from the floor to the bottom of the table surface.

Can I take my Zoomer on an airplane?

Yes, and here are a few things you need to know before taking your Zoomer on a plane. Your Zoomer should qualify as free baggage with most airlines, but you can call your airline prior to your trip to make sure. You can ride your Zoomer all the way up to the gate and down the jetway. As you get to the end of the jetway, you will need to remove the Zoomer battery from the back of the chair,  fold your Zoomer and hand it to a flight attendant to stow it under the plane. Take the battery on the plane with you to your seat. Be sure to contact your specific airline to ask for their procedures for transporting a battery-powered vehicle, and see your Zoomer Chair USA User Manual for more info. Here is a link to the FAA regulations regarding battery-powered chairs.   More info

Does the Zoomer have reverse mode?

Yes, the Zoomer Chair does have a powered reverse.

Can I manually push the Zoomer?

The Zoomer Chair can be pushed about easily when there is no rider in it; however, it is not specifically intended that seated users be pushed around in wheel-chair fashion by others as an alternative to chair's foremost purpose: a powered self-driving experience. (If you wish to prevent your Zoomer from being pushed from behind, you simply lock it in place.)

Is the footplate adjustable?

The swinging footplate is not adjustable; however, the Zoomer is designed to accommodate people of a wide variety of sizes.

Is the seat or backrest adjustable?

The seat and backrest are not adjustable. Some Zoomer owners with special comfort needs have chosen to add an additional cushion.

Can the Zoomer be used on heavily padded or thick carpet?

Customers who are closer to the Zoomer's weight limit of 275 lbs may find that the Zoomer is a little more difficult to use on very thick or heavily padded carpet when operating at low speed. The solution is to simply increase your speed setting, thereby increasing the ability of the Zoomer to move around on these types of surfaces without significantly increasing speed.

How long will the battery last on a single charge?

Depending upon usage (speed, weight, etc.) the Zoomer Chair's battery will last up to 8 miles of use.

How long will the battery last before needing to replace it?

The short answer is it depends on the usage and conditions. The battery on average lasts for several years for many of our customers.

How long does it take to charge the battery?

Charging the battery takes 4 hours or less depending on the level of power already used. With a range of up to 8 miles, most owners rarely run the battery all the way down in a single day.

How do I know if I need to charge the battery?

There is a battery indicator located on the control panel that tells you the battery life.

Is the battery included in the weight?

Yes, 50 pounds includes the weight of the battery.

Will the charger work in foreign countries?

Yes. The charger will operate on 110V or 220V, but you will need an inexpensive plug converter to fit the outlets of your foreign destination.

The Zoomer Chair is a personal electric vehicle and is not a medical device nor a wheelchair, and it has not been submitted to the Food and Drug Administration for review or clearance. Zoomer is not intended for medical purposes to provide mobility to persons restricted to a sitting position. It is not covered by Medicare or Medicaid.

Customer Reviews

I have been using for about a month now and wondered why it took me so long to get one. The phone mag safe is super strong and doesn’t fall off which is one thing I was concerned about. Super quick charge for all three devices and has really simplified my bedside table. Would highly recommend getting one of these

I’m very happy with the charger, it looks great and it works great! I just keep adding more Journey products to my collection. Great quality products.

Love it less cords and so functional

phone and ear buds charge fast.

I am giving a five star rating for the customer service after I gave a three star rating for the 3 in 1 one wireless charging station.

The product wasn't what I expected, and I decided to return it and to the credit of the team at Journey they made the process so easy and simple and took complete ownership of it.

I'm very impressed, even though the product wasn't right, the customer service was greatly appreciated how they handle their business. Thank you team.

Dodge journey light bulb size.

journey charger blue light

How do I know what size my light bulb is?

Need to know the Dodge Journey bulb size to replace a dimmed-off lamp? Below you may find the Dodge Journey bulb size charts with part numbers for all lamp positions like headlights, fog lights, brake lights, tail lights, turn signals, side markers, parking lights, cargo lights, etc.

Some bulb numbers are interchangeable. So if you spot a couple of different bulb sizes for one application, you may install any of them. Choose the year of production for your vehicle to see the list of OEM bulb sizes that are recommended by the car maker. The bulbs available for your Dodge Journey can be upgraded using halogen, LED, OE Xenon, and HID conversion kits.

Choose Dodge Journey Year for Bulb Size Chart

What type of headlight bulb does a dodge journey use.

We created this light bulb guide to make it easier for you to find the right OEM bulbs for your car. All the data is provided for informational purposes only. The Dodge Journey bulb fitment guide was compiled using information from trusted lighting companies like Osram Sylvania and Philips.

The list is a work in progress, and we reserve the right to make modifications at any time. Use this information at your own risk. We give no warranties regarding the data presented.

Why are we making such a fuss? We don't want to alarm you, but we feel obligated to inform you. This is because bulb sizes and kits can differ even within the same make, model, and year. The exact manufacturing month may occasionally have an impact on the bulb dimensions.

While we strive to be accurate, the information below may not be entirely correct for your car. Keep in mind that there is always a slight chance it could be wrong due to various factors.

Please let us know if you discover any changes that need to be made, or elements that should be included. It would be very helpful if you would do so.

Can I put LED bulbs in my Dodge Journey?

If you choose a Dodge Journey with all the bells and whistles, LED headlights may come standard. Consider the aftermarket LED bulbs as replacements for halogen bulbs on lower-level trims to gain better illumination and a longer lifespan.

Consider legal restrictions in your State!

A new set of LED lights for your Dodge Journey can improve the look and functionality of your vehicle.

If you're looking to upgrade the LED lights in your Dodge Journey, you'll want to take into account the legal restrictions in your area.

Because most states demand that your vehicle have yellow or white headlights, you may not be able to install headlights of different colors.

Check with your state's Department of Motor Vehicles or Department of Public Safety to determine what restrictions exist in your state before you begin shopping.

Before buying headlights or taillights, check that they have a DOT/SAE certification. This will guarantee that the light intensity is up to code for street driving.

Uconnect / Bluetooth not working/ This might be your Fix

journey charger blue light

  • Add to quote

I hope this will help somebody. I have a 2012 Dodge Charger SXT & my Uconnect/Bluetooth quit working about 2 months ago. I researched online to see if there was a way for me to fix it myself. Alot of ppl are having the same problem with Dodge. I tried all the tricks. Nothing worked. The one thing I didn't want to do was to replace it completely like other ppl had to & costing around $700. Meanwhile every now & then the battery saver mode would pop up on my messages/dash which had me worried so I went & had my battery tested. I had it tested for free at Advanced Auto Parts. My battery read good but stated it needed to be charged yet my alternater was good which I knew bc it was replaced by a recall not long ago. I still had the original battery that came with the car. So the man said maybe it's about to go bad & that's why it's not getting/holding a full charge. I mean it is 7 yrs old. So I went today to the Dodge Dearlership near me to get it replaced bc no Auto parts store will install it..believe me I went to multiple different part stores..all bc it's in the trunk & the parts stores won't let them install them bc it's around cables & wires that's a little more complicated they say & puts them at risk of messing stuff up. It states they can't install it on their computers when looking it up for my car also. Anyway my husband read online somewhere when researching my Uconnect problem that if your battery doesn't have full power that some of your electronics will stop working. I knew I needed a battery anyway. My car always cranked & I never needed a jump but just going off the battery saver mode notification & looking up what it meant.. I got worried recently when I saw a video of a man stating don't let your battery completely die in your Charger. Bc nothing will work then. You can't pop the trunk to get to your battery then. He had to climb through the back seats to try to get to the trunk & I don't remember how he got the trunk open but put it this way..you don't wanna have to do it.. After replacing my battery today..my Uconnect/Bluetooth is back working. Dealerships or Service writers aren't gonna tell you if that might be your problem bc everybody's trying to make money. Money to replace a module plus labor vs a battery replacement. Not saying this is always the case but it was my case. So if your battery isn't working as good as it should be then that's probably your problem. Just get your battery tested for free first to see if it's good & charging completely. If it's saying you need to charge it then have them test your alternater for free if it's good then you might need to get a new battery like I did just so everything works like it's supposed to. If that's not your fix then maybe it's the module.

The "battery saver mode" message is a warning that your battery is not able to keep up the demands being put on it. I always interpret it as a early warning message telling you to replace the battery. When the "Battery Saver Mode" or “Battery Saver On" message is displayed, the vehicle will turn off certain electrical functions to reduce battery energy consumption. This will occur during periods when the battery is not being adequately charged or the battery is not capable of keeping up with the demand . During this time, the following features (if equipped) may be turned off or will operate at a reduced power level: heated seats and heated steering wheel, heated or cooled cup-holder, rear defroster and heated mirrors, heating and air conditioning, power inverter, audio and telematics system. .

If your new battery goes dead, the problem is the telematics module itself. I had the exact same problem on my Journey, battery tests good but needed replacing. Replaced it and everything was good for a few months. Then it died again, Pulled the fuse for the Telematics module and battery charged up and worked fine for months. Reconnected fuse and battery got weak again. You may have just bandaided the problem with a new battery, if your car sits for more than 5 days you may find a low battery if the module is bad.

Update..since replacing my battery.. I'm back to every now & then my Uconnect not working. I gave up checking to see if it worked about a week ago. Something told me to check it yesterday & surprisingly it worked but today...not working... Ugh! When replacing my battery I wanted to get a more powerful battery but was limited on space since it's in the trunk & had to get it installed at a Dodge Dealership bc regular auto parts stores won't touch it. Costing me $65 for the installation. I saw YouTube videos of ppl getting better batteries that could handle all the electronics but was discouraged when I was told they wouldn't fit properly yet I saw them being installed by Charger owners. Maybe they customized their trunks idk. Anyway I'm back to square one. Lol maybe I need to research the telematics module. Thanks for the replys. ?

The non-Police Chargers have either a 160A or a 180A alternator. The Police Chargers have a 220A alternator. A higher amp alternator has an easier time of keeping the battery fully charged. There is only one factory Mopar spec battery for the non-Police Chargers. This is probably why the dealership only offered one option. Any battery you install should meet the factory spec so that the battery will fit correctly. For 2012 ... BCI Group Size = 94R The outside dimensions and terminal placement of the battery conform to standards established by the Battery Council International (BCI). Each battery is assigned a BCI Group Size number to help identify a correctly-sized replacement. Cold Cranking Amperage = 730 Reserve Capacity = 140 Ampere-Hours = 72 Since the battery is in the trunk it needs to be vented to the outside. There's a vent tube in the trunk that plugs into the battery. You need a battery that has a vent hole properly located so the vent tube can plug into it. None of this helps with the telematics module but it does explain why the auto parts stores didn't want anything to do with the battery and why the dealership only had one battery choice. You can look at the Build Sheet (Equipment Listing) for you car and see what alternator was installed at the factory. The link is https://fcacommunity.force.com/RAM/s/equipment-listing Enter the VIN in all CAPS if you get a message that says the VIN could not be found. You need a healthy alternator to keep the battery healthy. You can check to see if your car was included in the FCA alternator recall. Why Is My EV Charger Blinking Red? 3 Ways to Fix It

Published on: November 17, 2023 Written by Rizbi Neyaj / Fact-checked by Ozzy Evander

If your EV charger is blinking red, it typically indicates a fault or error. This warning sign should not be ignored as it can affect the charging process.

When an electric car charger displays a red light, it often signals a problem that needs immediate attention. This could range from a simple issue like a loose connection to more complex faults in the charger or the vehicle’s charging system. For lithium battery chargers , a blinking red light usually points to issues such as overheating, overcharging, or a potential fault with the battery itself. It’s essential to refer to the specific user manual for precise troubleshooting steps.

EV charger faults can vary. A steady red light might indicate a different issue than a blinking one. For instance, in the case of a Polestar charger flashing red , it could be a sign of a communication error between the charger and the vehicle. Similarly, power wheelchair and gel blaster chargers flashing red often denote a charging error or a battery fault. It’s crucial to understand the specific meanings of these indicators for your device.

In some cases, the red light could simply mean the battery is charging, and it will turn green or off when the battery is fully charged. However, if the light is blinking, it’s advisable to consult the manual or contact customer support for your specific charger model.

why is my ev charger blinking red

For a more detailed understanding of what a red light on your EV or battery charger means and how to address it, we invite you to read the detailed article below. This will provide you with a deeper insight into the potential issues and their solutions.

The Red Blinking Light on Your EV Charger

Overview of ev charger indicator lights.

When it comes to electric vehicle (EV) chargers, the indicator lights are like the charger’s way of communicating with us. These lights can tell us if the charger is connected properly, if it’s charging, or if there’s an issue. Most chargers have a green light to show everything is working fine and a red light to alert us to a problem. But it’s the blinking red light that often leaves us scratching our heads. What does it mean, and more importantly, what can we do about it?

Significance of the Red Blinking Light

A blinking red light on your EV charger isn’t just a fancy way of decorating your garage; it’s a signal that something’s not right. This could mean a range of things from a simple connection issue to a more serious hardware malfunction. It’s like your charger is trying to say, “Hey, I need some attention here!” Understanding what this light means is the first step in getting your charger back to its green-light state.

Common Causes of a Red Blinking Light

Electrical connection issues.

Sometimes the problem is as simple as a loose plug or a power outage. It’s like when your TV won’t turn on, and you realize it’s just unplugged. Here’s a quick look at some common electrical faults and what they might mean for your charger:

Charger Hardware Malfunctions

Just like any other piece of technology, EV chargers can have their own hardware issues. It could be something inside the charger that’s gone haywire, like a fried circuit or a broken component. Think of it like your phone acting up because of a hardware issue – frustrating, but fixable.

Vehicle Communication Errors

Your EV and charger need to talk to each other effectively. If there’s a miscommunication, like when your phone won’t connect to Bluetooth, the charger might blink red. This could be due to compatibility issues or a fault in the vehicle’s charging system .

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide

Checking the power source.

First things first, let’s make sure your charger is getting the power it needs. Check your power outlet, the plug, and ensure there hasn’t been a power cut in your area. It’s like checking if your Wi-Fi router is plugged in when your internet goes down.

Inspecting the Charger Cable and Connectors

Next up, take a look at the charger cable and connectors. Are they properly connected? Are there any visible damages? It’s a bit like making sure your headphones are plugged in all the way when you can’t hear anything.

Verifying Vehicle Compatibility

Lastly, ensure that your charger is compatible with your EV. It’s like making sure you have the right charger for your specific phone model. Sometimes, the issue is just a mismatch between the charger and the vehicle.

3 Effective Ways to Fix a Blinking Red Light

Solution 1: resetting the charger.

Resetting your EV charger can often resolve minor glitches, similar to rebooting a computer. This process varies depending on the charger model. Here’s a quick guide:

Solution 2: Repairing or Replacing Faulty Components

If a reset doesn’t fix the issue, the next step is to check for any faulty components. This might involve inspecting the charger for visible damage or wear. Sometimes, parts like cables or internal circuits might need repair or replacement. It’s similar to fixing a household appliance – sometimes a specific part needs attention.

Solution 3: Updating Charger Firmware

Just like smartphones, EV chargers sometimes need software updates for optimal performance. Check if there are any firmware updates available for your charger model. These updates can often resolve technical glitches or improve functionality.

Are the 3 Ways to Fix Club Car Charging Problems Similar to the 3 Ways to Fix a Blinking Red EV Charger?

When troubleshooting club car charging issues , you may find similarities with fixing a blinking red EV charger. Both situations often require a three-step approach to identify and resolve the problems. By checking the connections, inspecting the charger or onboard charger, and ensuring proper power supply, you can address and fix these issues efficiently.

When to Seek Professional Help

Identifying complex electrical issues.

Knowing when to tackle a problem yourself and when to call in a professional is key. Here’s a guide to help you decide:

Maintaining Your EV Charger for Optimal Performance

Regular maintenance tips.

Regular maintenance of your EV charger can prevent many issues. This includes routinely checking and cleaning the charger, ensuring all connections are secure, and monitoring for any wear and tear. Think of it like regular car maintenance – a little effort can go a long way in preventing bigger problems.

Monitoring Charger Health

Keeping an eye on your charger’s performance is crucial. If you notice any changes in charging speed or unusual noises, it might be time for a check-up. Regular monitoring helps catch issues early, ensuring your charger stays in top shape.

In summary, a blinking red light on your EV charger is a signal that shouldn’t be ignored. From simple resets to professional repairs, there are several ways to address this issue. Remember, regular maintenance and staying alert to your charger’s performance are key to long-term reliability. Always prioritize safety and don’t hesitate to seek professional help for complex issues.

What Does the Blue Flashing Light on the Solar Charger Mean?

As an outdoor enthusiast or someone who relies on solar power for charging devices, you might have noticed a blue flashing light on your solar charger. This little indicator light can seem mysterious if you’re unfamiliar with its purpose. Don’t worry, though – I’m here to help you understand the meaning behind that blinking blue light and help you understand what it’s trying to communicate.

So, be with us till the end to find out what the blue flashing light means on your solar charger. Let’s begin then!

What Does the Blue Flashing Light on the Solar Charger Mean

Does It Indicate an Error in the Solar Charger?

The blue flashing light on a solar charger does not necessarily indicate an error or malfunction. In most cases, it is simply a visual indicator of the charger’s operational status. The blue light usually means the solar charger is functioning properly and converting sunlight into electrical energy as intended.

However, it is important to note that the specific blinking pattern of the blue light can convey different meanings. The frequency and pattern of the flashes can provide information about the charging process or potential issues. Rather than assuming an error, it is advisable to refer to the manufacturer’s instructions to understand the precise meaning of the various blue light blinking patterns for your particular solar charger model.

Different Patterns of Blue LED Flashing Express Different Meanings

The flashing pattern of the blue LED light on a solar charger conveys various messages about the charging status and performance. Let me explain what different patterns signify:

Normal Blue Light Flashing

This is the happy dance you want to see! A steady blue light flashing at regular intervals (usually once every second or two) means the solar charger is receiving enough sunlight to charge the battery . This is the ideal state, indicating that the solar panels are working correctly and the battery is being charged.

While a steady blue light with occasional blinks is generally a good sign,  it doesn’t necessarily mean your battery is completely full.  The charging process typically involves multiple stages, and the blinking pattern might not always reflect the exact level of charge.  For a more detailed picture,  consult your solar charger’s user manual.

Slow Blink (every 3 seconds)

Now, a slow blink (usually every 3 seconds) tells a slightly different story. This pattern suggests that your solar charger isn’t getting enough sunlight to efficiently charge your battery .  There are a couple of reasons why this might happen:

Nighttime : This one’s a no-brainer. Since there’s no sunlight at night, the charger won’t be able to generate enough power for a significant charge.

Cloudy or Shady Conditions : Even during the day, if your solar panels are covered by clouds, trees, or other obstacles, they won’t receive enough direct sunlight to operate at peak efficiency.

But don’t worry!  A slow blink doesn’t necessarily mean your battery won’t get charged at all. It just might take a little longer than usual.

Mostly on With Brief Blinks (every 4 Seconds)

When the blue light remains mostly on with brief blinks every 4 seconds or so, it signifies that the solar charger is in bulk charging mode. This means the solar panels are receiving good sunlight and actively charging the battery at a higher rate.

What’s bulk charging?   Think of it as the initial stage of filling up your battery. During this phase, the charger delivers the maximum current possible to get your battery charged up as quickly as possible (within safe limits, of course).

So, is this the best blinking pattern to see?   Well, it depends!  While bulk charging is efficient, it’s not the only stage of the process.  A fully charged battery might exhibit a slightly different blinking pattern or even a solid blue light (depending on the charger model).

In general, a steadily flashing blue light is a positive sign that the solar charger is functioning as intended and charging the battery. However, if the light pattern deviates from the normal or expected behavior, it could indicate a need for troubleshooting or seeking better sunlight exposure .

Remember, a steadily flashing blue light is generally a good sign that your solar charger is doing its job and soaking up those rays to power your gadgets.

If you ever find yourself scratching your head over a different light pattern, don’t hesitate to consult your solar charger’s manual or reach out to the manufacturer for guidance. After all, a well-informed user is a happy user, especially when it comes to using the power of the sun.

But solar energy isn’t without its challenges….

Can You Get an Electric Shock from Portable Solar Panels? Is It True?

Can You Get an Electric Shock from Portable Solar Panels? Is It True?

Solar panels have revolutionized the way we harness the power of the sun to fuel our everyday lives. They are eco-friendly, cost-effective, and, when used correctly, incredibly safe.  While using regular solar panels, you may get an electric shock, and now you are kind of a believer that every kind of panel can give you…

Charger light turns amber occasionally

  • Add to quote

I have the factory supplied level 2 charger that came with my 2022 Bolt EUV. Occasionally the indicator light changes from blue to amber. The charger is not in use when this happens. It is plugged into a 240v 50 amp circuit. The user guide says this is caused by a problem “external to the cable” and to check the connections. All are very tight. I can cycle power and the blue light comes and stays on. Any ideas as to why it turns amber?

Could it be caused by voltage fluctuations from your electric utility in hot weather? In my area, Con Ed has cut voltage 5% past day or two.

Make sure the plug pigtail is fully inserted into the OEM Dual-Voltage EVSE body. This is a common problem, as it can take an inordinate amount of force to fully seat it.

My 2022 Chevy bolt just gave me this exact problem today. Did you figure out what the issue was?

My 2023 EUV OEM EVSE turned amber Saturday night for the first time. Glad I checked on it later because I needed a full charge for a long drive the next day. Car quit charging and never sent an email like it's supposed to. I unplugged and replugged it at the wall and the problem hasn't returned. Changed the plug end from 120 to 240 a few weeks ago, so maybe I need to check that it's fully seated on that end. I suspect the weight of the unit itself hanging from the plug is not good for it, need to look into a temporary mounting solution to support the weight of the unit. I know it has slots of the back for mounting, but they seem to be pointed in the wrong direction for my location...

I have had this issue when not charging several times since I bought the car (2023 EV) in January. If I reset the breaker, it's fine. I don't know what's causing this to occur, but it's very sporadic.

I reset the breaker and it’s still an issue. I’ve tried all of the troubleshooting I could think of and still no luck. The thing that really irritates me is I drove an hour away to the closest Chevy dealership that works on electric cars for a tire rotation today and now that I’m home the charger is messed up.

This is why I bought a Grizzl-e. The amber light means charging has been interrupted for whatever reason. It didn’t really matter, but it drove me insane just seeing it. The Grizzl-e might be doing the same thing, but at least it’s not telling me every fifteen minutes.

My car won’t charge at all since the Amber colored light came on.

Bolt is great. Factory 240 volt EVSE? Let me think of the word..sounds like awful. That's it. It's awful.

At higher ambient temperatures the dual voltage evse will reduce the flow of current until it cools a bit. This could wreak havoc on your plans if you need a full charge overnight. I think the unit is made with marginal crap components.

This is a known issue with the Chevy Dual Level EVSE. During Level 2 charging the EVSE will got hot and will derate from 31+amps to 23+amps, cool down a bit and go back to 31+amps. This cycle will continue through out the charging process. The lights on the evse will be pulsing Blue with solid Amber (shown in the evse owners manual). What I have observed on the affects on charging is that it can extend the total time to target charge limit can be an additional 15 minutes and other times not. Since we plug the car in around 4PM and unplug it at 5AM the de-rating cycle hasn't been an issue at all. The "Trouble Shooting" section of the Dual Level evse owners manual explains the heat monitoring function of the unit. If your car isn't charging at all, even connected to a fast charger, and the Dual Level evse lights are normal, then I suspect the problem is with your car's charger.

I'm having a similar problem with my Chevy Dual Level EVSE. While charging, the amber light will come on for a few minutes, then turn off. Charging continues with no apparent problems. My infrared thermometer says that the top of the charger is around 93 degrees F while the adjacent wall is only 60 degrees. This happens pretty consistently but has not so far affected charging. My question is whether the overheating of the charger indicates an increased likelihood that the charger will fail, or is this considered normal operation. Does anyone know the answer to that question? Thanks for any comments.

Wow! I have had my Chevy Bolt EUV for around 8 months never had this issue until today. Sure enough the plug was not comletely seated (about 1/8 inch out) and it feels like it can come out pretty easy. I tried pushing it in until it clicked or something but nothing and I pushed really hard. It just seams to sit up in the unit. Looking in the manual it also said something about heat along the cable can be an issue and I had the cable runing over my garage heater, so I rerouted the cable around the heater. Also the manual say's not to have the cable in any loops smaller than 7 inches. I had one of those as well. Anyway it appears to be good now but it bothers me that if I just give it a slight tug it will come out that 1/8 inch.

Push harder.

There are a lot of threads about this. I had my GM EVSE replaced and the new one did the same thing. So you can either live with it or buy your own charger.

I have had a charger cable (EVSE) in my cart at Amazon for as long as I have owned the Bolt. Always thaught it would be a good idea to purchase a back up. But as long as everything was working well never pulled the trigger. I purchased the new charge cable yesterday and it will arrive tomarrow. Also I believe I have figured out a way to keep the plug seated on the Bolt EVSE. I think I can use wire ties and a couple small blocks of wood to hold it in place. I purchaed an Emporia 48 amp which I will probably set to 40 amp as I don't really need the speed. I learned something from this experiance. My dealer only has one mechanic with experiance with electric cars. I told them my charge cord had the amber light on and would not charge. And the manual say's to bring it in to have it tested. They said they have no way of testing it and I would have to make an appointment and bring in the car and leave it. I tried to explain to him that the charge cord is not connected to the car but they did not care. They said they needed everything and for it to be left with them. It did not give me a lot of confidence it the dealership. I figured out what was wrong by reading this forum. Should have come here first.

My experience with the dealer to get the cord replaced was a three day ordeal without my car. Frustrating! Buying a new cord will save you all of that.

Well it appears that you can not get the cord replaced at this time as they are backordered. The parts person did a check of other dealers and could not find one through that process either. (Just as well because I figured it out after reading about the amber light.) I'm not unhappy about buying a different one as I have saved way more money in gas than it cost.

Okay so my car charged last night with my original cable fully seated. But when I went out to the garage this morning the blue light was on and the amber light was flashing. Haven't seen that before. I did try to remote start the car this morning and wondering if that has something to do with it?

This will drive you insane. Just go to the Grizzl-e store online and buy a refurbished charger for $280 bucks. Simple install, 40 amp charging, no amber light. Put the GM charger in the undertrunk for emergencies.

Despite the various encantions provided by this illustrious forum to remidate the ills of the Chevy dual-level EVSE, alas, they have not provided a remedy to both the units I've had the displeasure of owning. I've now consider them "hot garbage" and won't waste any more time on them. Now my only challenge is explaining to my charming bride just why I need to spend another $350 on an EVSE when we already own one. Current strategy is to blame this forum for ruining my confidence in the Chevy unit. You guys really have no shame and thank you.

Journey on the Trans-Siberian: Moscow to Yekaterinburg

This is the second part of a series about my trip across Russia on the Trans-Siberian Railway in the summer of 2018. I’ll cover the overnight ride from St Petersburg to Moscow, the 16 hours I spent in the Russian capital, and the two-day ride from Moscow to Yekaterinburg.

The route of my trip along the Trans-Siberian Railway, from St Petersburg to Vladivostok.

After a few days in St Petersburg I boarded the overnight train to Moscow. The sleeper train “Red Arrow” departs at 11:55pm. I read (but didn’t confirm) the departure time was set in Soviet times to leave before midnight so travelers could get reimbursed for two working days.

The “Red Arrow” train to Moscow train leaves St Petersburg at 11:55pm sharp.

There were three people already in the cabin when I walked in: In one of the top bunks was a girl who looked 20-something, and on the two bottom bunks, two Brazilian men who looked like soccer fans. (It was World Cup summer.)

We exchanged muted hello’s and filled out our breakfast order forms. Without wasting time I followed the process of settling into an overnight cabin:

  • Examine and unpack the supplied bedding.
  • Make the bed.
  • If foreigners are in the cabin, motion to them to follow your lead.
  • Exit the cabin to give others room to make their bed and, if they wish, to change into sleeping attire.
  • Return when appropriate, and begin smalltalk to spark a deep and cross-cultural conversation that’ll grow richer and bring you closer together with every mile of track until the morning golden hour.

Except the Brazilian men didn’t speak English, and the girl, probably on-guard, remained silent. I went to sleep.

Carpeted hallway of the second-class car.

It wasn’t the rocking that stirred me awake every hour, but the impressive guttural symphony coming from the man below me. The snores came in different tones and rhythms, transforming mid-breath with no particular pattern, which made them difficult to ignore. (A few days later, Tatiana, another cabin-mate, refuted my story by telling me sound doesn’t travel upwards. “Then he cheated physics,” I said.) I forced my earplugs deeper and felt relief that this is only a seven-hour trip.

By morning the Brazilians still didn’t speak English but the girl was more inviting. She’s a mother of two—which surprised me—and was headed to Moscow for a meditation seminar. I made whatever smalltalk I could fit between bites of fried cheese fritters until we arrived in Moscow.

It was early morning, and my first objective was to find a quiet part of the city where I can rest until some nearby coffeeshop opens. I took the metro to the nearest patch of green on Google Maps—a park called “Clean Ponds.”

Metro station “Clean Ponds” in Moscow.

The only available bench was next to a group of Russian men still drinking from the night before. One of the men was slumped over, another was drying in the sun after taking a dip in the pond, another was throwing fists at the wet one, and the rest were fighting to stay upright—only because it’s easier to keep drinking when upright. I decided against napping, and instead enjoyed the scene unfolding to my left.

A woman approached and sat next to me, holding her small dog, and complained about the park’s occupants. Following a light conversation, she lit a cigarette, told me about her (deceased) husband’s medical invention, and proposed I introduce the product to the US market in return for a cut of the profits. She did this while parrying advances from one of the men. (“I have a job and own an apartment in a good location, behind the McDonald’s,” he said.) She gave me her phone number before leaving, probably dreaming of business ventures in America that will not happen.

My inebriated bench neighbors.

When the woman left, the party group noticed me. “Where the f— did you come from?!” one of them said. I was prepared to give (and take) a few hits and run, but managed to ease the tension with some jokes and handshakes.

I gave up on rest and went in search of coffee and breakfast.

Irina and Red Square

Saint Basil’s Cathedral at the Red Square in Moscow.

Irina is a lawyer living in Moscow who’s trying to improve her English. We met on a language-learning website, and arranged to meet in person to walk through the Red Square and practice English/Russian.

The Red Square was staged for the World Cup and crowded with tourists. It felt like the Russian version of Times Square, which I found intolerable. I snapped some shots and hurried us to lunch.

We found a Georgian restaurant just off the main boulevard and spent the next hour chatting about Russia’s legal system, language exams, graduate school, and how long could it possibly take to cook chicken.

In 2007 I was supposed to visit St Petersburg aboard my college’s training ship. My cousin warned me I should brush up on my Russian: “We have smart relatives there, don’t embarrass yourself.” I searched for Russians to chat with online and found Polina.

We spoke every other day in the months leading up to my voyage that summer. I started to like her. We made unrealistic plans for her to travel from Moscow to St Petersburg to meet me for the few days I’d be there. It never happened. Just days before my ship’s scheduled arrival, the captain diverted us to Estonia after failing to get the proper docking permits or visas for Russia. Polina and I exchanged only a few emails over the next decade.

This time, the plan worked.

We met and crisscrossed the Moskva river over bridges as we spoke of life in Russia, her newborn son, traveling, her dreams of returning to freelancing, the things we still do and those we don’t… I don’t remember where we walked or what we passed.

Is this what Captain Smith made me miss? I imagined myself at 19, and Polina getting permission from her mom to take the overnight train to St Petersburg, and my needing to return to the ship by midnight, and maybe ending up like my shipmate and the Croatian girl he fell in love with on the first day in port in Dubrovnik…

The thought made me happy but also underscored the passage of time. We were far from 19, and we both found love on native soil, and she became a mom, and I had to catch the train to Yekaterinburg before midnight.

Polina and me in Moscow.

After saying goodbye to Polina, it was time for the next segment of the Trans-Siberian Railway: A one-and-a-half-day ride to Yekaterinburg. I stocked up on ramen noodles and tea, and made my way to the train.

Typical four-person cabin in the second-class car.

Riding the Trans-Siberian Railway is interesting for two reasons: The train itself, and the people on it. Life aboard the train doesn’t differ much from one segment to another, so I will write a separate article of observations and survival tips learned throughout the entire trip.

The people, however, did change with each segment. On this segment from Moscow to Yekaterinburg, as urban sprawl gave way to dense forests and wooden villages, I got to know a family from the Far North.

View of the Russian countryside.

Tatiana, Nastia, and Sasha

My roommates for the 27-hour trip from Moscow to Yekaterinburg were Tatiana and her two children, Nastia and Sasha.

Within minutes of departure I took off my shoes to get comfortable and waited for the hallway activity to calm down before preparing for bed. Tatiana, somehow sensing my inexperience with long-distance train travel, pointed at the blue disposable slippers that came with the provided bedding and gently suggested I put them on. I thought they were silly and not for someone who’s used to rough traveling, so I responded that I’m alright in my socks. She tried to convince me a bit longer before giving up.

Moments later, I went to the bathroom—there’s one at each end of every car—and learned they’re just like airplane bathrooms: small and wet, and you don’t know from what . I returned to the cabin, changed my socks, and donned the blue disposable slippers. Tatiana looked on with approval.

Disposable slippers are provided to all passengers.

They were traveling from their small military town near the Russia-Finland border (where her husband is stationed) to Novosibirsk — over 3,000 miles away — to visit her parents, as they do every summer. Airfare would cost them three months’ worth of income (by my own calculation), so they took the train, like many Russian families traveling to or from Siberia.

Our conversations spanned life in Russia, life in the US, Nastia’s college ambitions (she’s undecided between medicine and chemistry), traveling (because of the husband’s position in the military, the family is not allowed to travel outside of Russia), drawing, Russian literature, and more… We talked without end for two days while sharing food and drinking tea by the liter.

Nastia, me, Tatiana, and Sasha

Tatiana teaches literature and Russian at their local school. She told me about life inside the arctic circle and showed me photos of polar lights, fields of flowers, her shirtless husband stepping out of a bania (a Russian sauna) and jumping into the snow, and other everyday scenes. She worried about what will happen after her husband’s military contract ends next year. She’ll miss Nastia when she stays behind in Novosibirsk for one final year of school and then university.

Tatiana also worried about my safety. She advised me to tell people I’m a local: “Your Russian is good enough,” she said, “that people will believe you and assume that your slight accent and slower pace is due to—” and she raised her fingers to her temple and did a twisting gesture. I nodded, thought for a moment, and decided that was a compliment.

Nastia drew matryoshka dolls in my journal.

Nastia is a straight-A student interested in chemistry and medicine. She’s not sure which of the two she’ll study in university, but she has another year to decide. She’ll stay with her grandparents in a small village outside of the city for another year until it’s time to attend Novosibirsk University. Although she studied english in school for several years, she never felt comfortable enough to speak it. (The faculty at their local school is made up of military spouses with little or no teaching experience.)

Nastia earns money on the side by painting custom designs on her clients’ nails. Her designs—from cartoon characters to landscapes to sunsets, all painted on half-inch-wide keratin canvases—are remarkable and belong in high-end nail salons of New York. I offered her some advice based on my consulting experience (she should charge more for more the elaborate designs). Her entrepreneurial spirit made me happy for her, maybe because it reminded me of my teenage years when I drew cartoons for money.

Sasha drew whatever he wanted in my journal.

Sasha is just beginning to learn English, and this was his first encounter with a native speaker. He was nowhere near conversational English, so he engaged the only way he could: shouting out Russian words from his language workbook to see if I could respond with the right translation. “How do you say, um, ‘lion?’” he asked, and looked at me with a wide smile and alert eyes, waiting to hear a word that matched his notes. “Give Greg a break,” Tatiana said, more than once, after many animals were correctly translated, but I gave Sasha an approving smile to signal it’s alright. “Crocodile!?” he continued…

A sunset over hills of Russia, seen through the train’s thick windows.

The next day, as the train approached Yekaterinburg in the early morning, I nudged Tatiana and Nastia awake to say “goodbye,” as they requested the night before, when we exchanged longer goodbyes and I told them how wonderful it was to meet and spend time with them. “Goodbye, Greg,” they replied, and both gave me a smile that I didn’t expect from anyone whose sleep was interrupted, who’s been on the road for weeks, who wouldn’t see her daughter (or mother) for a year, whose future was so uncertain… And still they smiled in the way that only good people do.
