This website is a nifty tool that helps you create characters for Star Trek Adventures RPG by Modiphius. But you need to enable JavaScript to run this app.

If you don't want want to turn on JavaScript, okay, I get that. But you'll have to use the telepathically-enabled version instead. Beam your ideas of your character directly at your browser, and our cadre of Betazoid character creation representatives will try to receive your telepathic broadcasts and record them for you. There's a greater likelihood of success if you're a Vulcan or a Napean. Otherwise... well, we're not going to lie: there's only a small chance that the telepathic broadcast will be received.

Star Trek Adventures Online Character Generator

Star Trek Adventures has a new online Character Creation app which lets you develop your character and save it as a PDF, you can also create ships and NPCs. It’s still in beta testing but give it a whirl and let us know what you think! Engage!

https://sta.modiphiusapps.hostinguk.org/

Very smooth for the most part, any hint as to when it’ll be updated with content from new books such as the Beta Quadrant book?

Also is there a good way to report a bug in the creator? I found one problem during randomisation, though it may have been fixed since.

Sorry I have no information to share at the moment about updating the Character. Generator.

On the left of the interface, in the LCARS graphics. There are three words. The bottom one says Feedback. Click on that and ut ooens a form that you can use to communicate directly with the creator.

D’oh! I should have seen that!

The best way is to use the “Feedback” button, as Steve H suggested. That way, I can organize all feedback properly.

About the Beta Quadrant, Command Division and Operations Division. There are negotiations ongoing about these books, but I cannot promise anything at this time, sorry.

Brilliant App, found no bugs, very helpful

Awesome, thanks Wendigo!

This is such a cool thing. There seems to be a belief that online character generators hamper sales in some way. I totally don’t agree. Online character generators help players by getting them into the game faster. We had a new player just bought the book. But was struggling a little with character creation. So we suggested sitting down with his book and doing the online one but follow each of the steps in the book as he did it. Its so useful. As a GM its awesome I can quickly do things before the game.

I would also like to see more content. My game they wanted a Oberth Class vessel which wasn’t in the game. I’ve ordered the new books from my local store but having it expanded over time would be great.

A random star system generator wouldn’t be bad either. I’ve been caught a couple of times needing to make up a system on the fly.

Great idea about system generator, I will consider it.

I really like it, I was having trouble with both the directions in the quick-start guild and now that I have it the book. I haven’t fully tested the Ship part yet. One thing that would help though- is a place to write PC history and rooms for longer values.

Continueing voyage has a real nice sheet that matches the PDFs the creator makes for you and it’s a blank, fillable PDF sheet.

Thanks! Ill cheek it out

That’s cool. Glad you got the negotiations ironed out.

Edit* tried generating a character. I could not select the new Academy tracks nor the new career event presented in Operations

Is this available to everyone, even if they haven’t bought a copy of the books?

Haha nice. That’s certainly one way of doing it. “You can have these things, but I’m not gonna tell you what they do!” Will be very useful for putting together all my npcs

In the Operations Book is a new Track for the Carreer, Recruited by Starfleet Inteligence. Is it worked in into the Character Generator?

Gregory Jein

Gregory Jein, the acclaimed model maker and artist who worked on eight Star Trek properties and earned Oscar nominations for Steven Spielberg ‘s Close Encounters of the Third Kind and 1941 , has died. He was 76.

Jein died May 22 in his Los Angeles home of cardiac arrest after a long history of health issues that included a battle with diabetes, a family spokeswoman told The Hollywood Reporter . His family elected to keep his death quiet until this week, she added.

According to the website Memory Alpha , Jein began his association with Star Trek in 1977 by designing a Klingon battle cruiser for Star Trek: Phase II , which would have been the first live-action spinoff of NBC’s original Star Trek had it gone forward.

He collaborated with visual effects maestro Douglas Trumbull on Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), then followed with Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989), Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991),  Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) and  Star Trek X: Nemesis (2002) and the Star Trek shows  The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine and Voyager .

Much of his work was done through his company, Gregory Jein Inc., which he launched in 1979.

He shared Emmy nominations for the 1996 Deep Space Nine episode “Trials and Tribble-ations” and for the 2003 HBO miniseries Angels in America and received eight excellence in production design noms from the Art Directors Guild, the most recent for his contributions as a model maker to the live-action Mulan (2020).

The modest Jein shared visual effects Oscar noms with Trumbull, Roy Arbogast and brothers Matthew and Richard Yuricich on Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and with William A. Fraker and A.D. Flowers on 1941  (1979). He spent about two years on the latter, which he called one of his most rewarding jobs.

His résumé also included Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Interstellar (2014), plus One From the Heart (1981), The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984), The Hunt for Red October (1990),  Judge Dredd (1995),  The Scorpion King (2002), Fantastic Four (2005), Avatar (2009),  Reel Steel (2011),  John Carter  (2012) and Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016).

He worked for ILM, Boss Film Corp., Walt Disney Imagineering and other production houses.

“We look to have fun and make everything the best we can on any project we work on,” he explained in a 2015 interview for StarTrek.com .

Born in Los Angeles on Oct. 31, 1945, Jein spent most of his life in the Crenshaw district and attended Audubon Junior High, Dorsey High School and Cal State Los Angeles. He was especially fond of telling stories from his childhood of stuffing fortune cookies fresh from the oven at the Famous Hong Kong Noodle Co.

He did special effects for the X-rated Flesh Gordon and John Carpenter’s Dark Star , both released in 1974, then worked on the NBC telefilm The UFO Incident and the Wonder Woman pilot for ABC the next year.

His work with Trumbull began with a three-month assignment at the Future General Corp. His major contribution as chief model maker to Close Encounters was the ethereal Mothership, a virtual city in the sky that rose above Devil’s Tower. (The model is now housed in the Smithsonian’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.)

On Facebook, longtime Star Trek graphic designer Michael Okuda said he was “deeply saddened” by Jein’s death.

“Greg had a wry sense of humor and was endlessly inventive,” the three-time Emmy nominee wrote . “He always seemed to find a way to provide us with spaceships, even when only a tiny budget was available. He genuinely loved Star Trek and was always generous with his expertise and his experience, giving many top modelers their start in the business. Greg had been ill for some time, but his passing is nevertheless a gut punch.”

Survivors include his cousins Eleanor, Cheryl, Jerry, Vivian, Laura and Janice and their families. A celebration of his life is being planned.

In the StarTrek.com interview, Jein called himself “a collector and an accumulator” of comic books, pulp magazines and movie/TV memorabilia and revealed that he once bought a script from the original Star Trek  series before the episode even aired.

“I have a hard time throwing anything away,” he said.

Product looked good, too, although the notoriously-difficult-to-pin-down font size and margins seemed off to me. (I'd share it, but I believe board rules forbid it at the moment.) Of course, the true test of a card maker -- missions & personnel -- still lies ahead, but it's a promising start! Thank you for sharing -- and, perhaps even moreso, for open-sourcing!

Create the Coolest Avatars for your Star Trek Adventure Games

I love the plentitude of resources I find from scouring the web for my Star Trek Adventures game. In this case, let me introduce you to Sci-Fi Avatars.

Sci-Fi Avatars is a site aimed at providing simmers with avatars for their characters.

They have Andorians, Klingons, Romulans, and Vulcans in all colors of all uniforms. There are 3 pages of Humans finished and a good bit of all other species, including the new Caitians!

The site is created by Fruitloop and operated by Kuro-Chan. (Um. Interesting names guys.) Check them out at stavatars.com.

Here are a couple other members of my crew. (Yeah. That’s Vulcan Eminem. What of it, foo’?)

Another great option is Star Trek Online. It’s the free-to-play Star Trek MMO from Cryptic Entertainment, and it has a deep character and NPC editors that features a wide variety of available uniforms. We’ve been using it to create character avatars for our STA game, and they look REALLY good: https://www.dropbox.com/s/3r4vtyfhp2bfdx3/Senior-Staff.jpg?dl=0

Tres cool! Good idea!

Turn Lighting 2.0 off in your graphics settings, and your characters won’t looked washed out.

The Makers were a humanoid species native to the Andromeda Galaxy . With the creation of service robots , which became far more common than was the case in the mid- 23rd century Federation , the Makers were free to evolve into a perfect social order. The Makers established exploratory outposts in the Andromeda and Milky Way galaxies . One of these outposts, later renamed Mudd by Harry Mudd , was the assignment for Norman . The homeworld of the Makers was devastated by a supernova . With the destruction of the home planet, the civilization collapsed with only a few exploratory outposts surviving the cataclysm. Over time, the surviving Makers died and, by 2268 , the species was extinct . ( TOS : " I, Mudd ")

What is Star Trek?

Star Trek is a science fiction universe that started as television series. The original series is from the 60s but since then they made quite a few more series, films, novels, games, etc. The original series, and also quite a few of the sequels, are based on the crew of a starship exploring the galaxies.

Some of the series and characters are:

Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS, 3 seasons) tells the adventures of the crew of starship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) while exploring the galaxies. Captain James T. Kirk (played by William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Doctor McCoy (played by Jackson DeForest Kelley), Scotty (James Doohan), Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) and Hikaru Sulu (played by George Takei) are some of the members of the crew.

Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG, 7 seasons) tells the stories of the crew of USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) a different ship than the previous and also a century after The Original Series. Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Steward), William Riker (played by Jonathan Frakes), Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), Worf (Michael Dorn), Beverly Crusher (played by Gates McFadden), Deanna Troi (Martina Sirtis), Data (Brent Spiner) and Wesley Crusher (will Wheaton) are some of the staff on the starship.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9, 7 seasons) is based on a space station rather than a starship. It overlaps with the last years of The Next Generation series. Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), Major Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor), Constable Odo (played by René Auberjonois), Worf (Michael Dorn), Quark (played by Armin Shimerman) and Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) are some of the crew members on the space station.

Star Trek: Voyager (7 seasons) tells the story of the ship USS Voyager that gets transported to a distant region of the universe and have a trip of 75 years to come back home. It happens roughly at the same time as Deep Space Nine. Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), Chakotay (Robert Beltran), B'Elanna Torres (played by Roxann Dawson), Neelix (Ethan Phillips), The Doctor (played by Robert Picardo), Tuvok (Tim Russ) and Seven of Nine (played by Jeri Ryan) are some of the crew members and main characters of the series.

Star Trek: Enterprise (4 seasons) is a prequel to The Original Series and tells the stories of the crew of the Enterprise (NX-01). Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula), T'Pol (played by Jolene Blalock), Phlox (John Billingsley) and Hoshi Sato (played by Linda Park) are some of the crew members of the starship.

Star Trek: Discovery is a direct prequel set about 10 years earlier to The Original Series and it is based on what happens to Lt. Commander Michael Burnham (played by Sonequa Martin-Green). Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs), Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Saru (played by Doug Jones), Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp), Hugh Culber (played by Wilson Cruz), Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) and Ash Tyler / Voq (played by Shazad Latif) are some of the characters she encounters during the series.

Star Trek: Picard happens some time after The Next Generation and focuses on the character of Jean-Luc Picard. Jean-Luc Picard (played by Patrick Stewart), Dr. Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill), Soji Asha (Isa Briones), Elnor (played by Evan Evagora) and Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) are some of the other characters on the series.

You can find more information about Star Trek on the Memory Alpha Wiki , the Star Trek page on Wikipedia and for events and fan content and events there is the Official Star Trek web page .

With this avatar creation tool we have tried to give you some accurate representation of the uniforms for most of the series and characters. There is also the option to create Klingon and Vulcan characters. We keep working on improving and updating the designs, so please check from time to time for new bits and features.

Star Trek's Big Decision Makers Listen To Fans – Just Not The Toxic Ones

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Ah, the wonders of the internet. When humanity first discovered electricity (in the spirit of "Star Trek" nerdery, here's an enlightening fun fact: it wasn't Benjamin Franklin! ), the original trailblazers couldn't have possibly known what they'd eventually unleash upon our species. On one hand, the invention of computers and our entire online ecosystem as we know it means we have easier access to writers, actors, and other artists than we've ever had before. But, on the negative side of the equation, we have easier access to writers, actors, and other artists than we've ever had before. Is anyone else hearing that echo here?

Yeah, let's just put it this way — in a time when studios are relying on popular franchises and IPs more than anything else, the ever-present specter of, ah, passionate fans with strong  opinions looms large over the vast majority of productions. Hyperbolic fandom feedback isn't exactly a new phenomenon, judging by how audiences originally responded to divisive movies like "The Empire Strikes Back" or the casting of major roles like Michael Keaton as Batman, but the advent of the internet certainly helped speed up and magnify the entire process. Like it or not, toxic fandom has become an undeniably real issue with real ramifications.

Trekkies in particular have always had a way of making their feelings known to the storytellers in charge and Paramount's recent output of movies and shows alike are no exception, as current "Trek" figurehead Alex Kurtzman has had firsthand experience with. There have certainly been some bumps along the way, but it appears that the franchise veteran has managed to reach a healthy equilibrium between telling stories as he and his writers see fit versus listening to outside feedback. In short, fandom input is taken into account ... but only to a point.

Healthy boundaries

It's the quintessential "Trek" conundrum about the needs of the many versus the needs of the few. Directors, writers, actors, and everyone in between have a duty to tell the absolute best stories that they possibly can, regardless of how the most hardcore fans might feel about it. But, at the same time, there's the reality that the concerns and thoughts of the more reasonable fans out there might be worth paying attention to on occasion. I personally don't envy anybody in the position of having to make such difficult calls on a daily basis, but Alex Kurtzman seems to have figured out the trick with "Star Trek."

In a new profile by Variety , the longtime franchise writer and producer remarked upon dealing with various different reactions received by some of the more divisive "Trek" shows in recent years. "Star Trek: Discovery," for instance , caused quite a stir by introducing the new character of Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) as the secret adoptive sister to Spock. Meanwhile, the animated series "Lower Decks" shocked more old-school fans with its course language, zany tone, and irreverent humor. So whose opinions are worth giving the time of day to and whose aren't? According to Kurtzman:

"We listened to a lot of it. I think I've been able to separate the toxic fandom from really true fans who love 'Star Trek' and want you to hear what they have to say about what they would like to see."

How's that for a refreshing amount of honesty? The best storytellers know there's simply no pleasing everyone, so at a certain point one must trust their own instincts. That said, it's obvious to see how shows like "Discovery" course-corrected in response to constructive criticism. Hopefully, Kurtzman's balanced approach will be just what "Star Trek" needs.

Star trek: discovery’s tng connection explained - "the chase" & who are the progenitors.

The Progenitors were one of Captain Picard's most profound discoveries in Star Trek: The Next Generation, now Burnham resumes the chase in Discovery.

WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episodes 1 & 2!

  • Star Trek: Discovery season 5 continues the story of the Progenitors discovered by Captain Picard 800 years ago.
  • Captain Burnham embarks on a treasure hunt to uncover the Progenitors' technology with potential for peace or conflict.
  • The legacy of the Progenitors in Star Trek: Discovery raises questions of power, unity, and morality in the 32nd century.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is a surprising sequel to the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Chase", continuing the story of the enigmatic Progenitors 800 years after they were discovered by Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). As Discovery is set 800 years after the TNG era, it can often feel forced when the show tries to marry up these two ends of the Star Trek timeline . However, the magnitude of Picard's discovery about the Progenitors justifies the secret being hidden for centuries, and it could have fascinating implications for the future of Star Trek 's 32nd century.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive" opens with Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) exploring an 800-year-old Romulan scout ship at the behest of Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg). Kovich was less forthcoming than usual with information about the USS Discovery's "Red Directive" mission , forcing Burnham to seek help from Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) in learning more. Tilly uncovered recordings left by the Romulan scientist Dr. Vellek (Michael Copeman), revealing Discovery 's links to Star Trek: The Next Generation 's original Progenitor treasure hunt, led by Captain Picard.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Picard’s original progenitor treasure hunt in tng explained.

In Star Trek: The Next Generation season 6, episode 20, "The Chase", Picard's former archeology teacher, Professor Galen (Norman Lloyd) asked the Enterprise captain to join him in solving a 4.5 billion-year-old mystery. Picard initially declined Galen's offer, but circumstances forced him to reconsider when his mentor's shuttle was attacked. Galen left behind files that contained huge blocks of numbers that were indecipherable without further information . Picard had the Enterprise retrace Galen's journey in the hope of finding out more about the archeology professor's strange code.

"The Chase" was directed by Jonathan Frakes, who returned to direct the penultimate episode of Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Eventually, Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) discovered that the numbers refer to DNA strands of multiple different alien species. The combined strands form a shape that resembles an algorithm, a program implanted in the DNA of multiple species, for reasons unknown . It quickly became clear that Picard was not the only person seeking answers about Galen's mystery, as the Cardassians and Klingons also sought to understand what this ancient program could be. Negotiating a truce between the two factions, Picard and Crusher gained enough information to lead the Enterprise, Cardassians, Klingons, and Romulans to the planet Vilmor II, where they make a monumental discovery.

TNG’s Progenitors Created All Humanoid Life In The Star Trek Universe

The treasure on Vilmor II was knowledge about life itself, delivered via a holographic message left behind by an ancient humanoid species. The sole humanoid species in the universe, these aliens wanted to leave a lasting legacy after their own extinction. And so, 4.5 billion years earlier, the ancient humanoids seeded their DNA across multiple planets in the Star Trek universe , influencing the evolution of countless species. Star Trek: Discovery reveals that since Picard revealed his findings, Starfleet have been calling the ancient humanoid species The Progenitors.

The Ancient Humanoid in Star Trek: The Next Generation was played by Salome Jens, who would go on to play the Female Changeling in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine .

Not unlike the broken treasure map from Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 2, "Under the Twin Moons" , the Progenitors' message was broken into fragments and contained within multiple alien species' DNA. The Progenitors' intention was that, upon coming together to piece the fragments together, the disparate alien races would unite under their common origins. Sadly, this wasn't the case in Star Trek: The Next Generation , as the Klingons and Cardassians refused to believe that they could possibly originate from the same species . However, the Romulans were more thoughtful, setting up Discovery 's season 5 premiere.

Star Trek: Discovery's Huge Season 5 TNG Connection Explained By Showrunner

Discovery’s romulan scientist and his tng link explained.

At the end of Star Trek: The Next Generation 's "The Chase", Captain Picard discusses the Progenitors' message with a surprisingly open-minded Romulan commander. The message has had an effect on the Romulan, who tells Picard that he hopes to one day stand alongside humanity as friends. Star Trek: Discovery reveals that one of the members of TNG 's Romulan landing party, Dr. Vellek, continued to research the Progenitors and eventually found where their ancient technology was hidden. However, Vellek was very aware that such technology could be as deadly as it is profound, and went to extraordinary lengths to hide his findings .

Both the crew of the USS Discovery and intergalactic outlaws Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) have access to Vellek's journals. However, both parties have very different intentions for the Romulan scientist's life's work. Captain Burnham hopes that recovering the Progenitors' technology will provide a sense of meaning, while Moll and L'ak are attracted by the price tag . Vellek remained hidden for 800 years, until his corpse was discovered in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, which proves just how desperate he was to keep the location of the Progenitors' technology a secret.

What Does Star Trek: Discovery’s Progenitor Link Mean For Its Final Season?

In Star Trek: The Next Generation , the Progenitors had hoped the truth about humanoid life in the galaxy would bring a new era of peace and understanding . However, rather than become inspired by their commonality, the Klingons and Cardassians instead feud with each other, disgusted that they could be somehow genetically related. 800 years later, and in the wake of the hostilities caused by The Burn, the Progenitors' message could be the very thing that finally unites the galaxy in Star Trek: Discovery 's finale . However, it may not be that simple.

For one thing, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will continue the story of the 32nd century, and the Progenitors' message of commonality will dramatically reduce any sense of conflict in the universe. More interestingly, Dr. Kovich seems to want to get his hands on the technology, not the message. The Progenitors' technology would allow Starfleet to influence the evolution of other species , power that would set them up among the gods. This feels like too much power for a shifty character like Kovich to possess.

Whoever possesses the Progenitors' tech in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 has the very building blocks of life itself. In the right hands, that could lead to profound discoveries that lead to renewed peace and prosperity for the Federation in the 32nd century. In the wrong hands, enemies of the Federation could use those building blocks for their own nefarious purposes. That's a huge concern as Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery continue their treasure hunt. Sooner or later, Captain Burnham will have to make a choice about how she deals with the legacy of Star Trek: The Next Generation 's Progenitors.

Star Trek: Discovery is an entry in the legendary Sci-Fi franchise, set ten years before the original Star Trek series events. The show centers around Commander Michael Burnham, assigned to the USS Discovery, where the crew attempts to prevent a Klingon war while traveling through the vast reaches of space.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek: The Next Generation is the third installment in the sci-fi franchise and follows the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew members of the USS Enterprise. Set around one hundred years after the original series, Picard and his crew travel through the galaxy in largely self-contained episodes exploring the crew dynamics and their own political discourse. The series also had several overarching plots that would develop over the course of the isolated episodes, with four films released in tandem with the series to further some of these story elements.

Will AI Deliver a Real Star Trek Replicator? This Founder Is Making It His Mission

M att Putman, co-founder of Peter Thiel-backed manufacturing technology company Nanotronics, wants to make Star Trek technology a reality.

In a waterfront factory in Brooklyn, one founder is boldly going forward with an ambitious initiative: to make technology from Star Trek real. That entrepreneur is Matthew Putman, and while his vision for life imitating science fiction won't be ready in time for Thursday's premiere of season five of Star Trek: Discovery , Putman thinks he's not far off.

The co-founder and CEO of manufacturing technology company Nanotronics, Putman wants to build the next best thing to Star Trek's Replicator, a fictional device that can rearrange particles to create anything from food and drink to complex machinery. His company, which he founded in 2010, supplies microscopes that use artificial intelligence to manufacturing businesses, which use them to monitor and control their fabrication processes. Nanotronics has raised more than $130 million from investors including Peter Thiel .

So where does Star Trek come in? Putman is currently at work on Cubefabs, a modular fabrication plant that uses a proprietary AI to improve manufacturing efficiency in real time. Similar to a 3-D printer, Cubefabs uses automation across several machines to slice semiconductor crystals into thin wafers, imprint circuitry patterns on those wafers, and etch them into a pre-specified shape. While it can't conjure up a dirty martini like the Replicator, Putman thinks Cubefabs can serve a similar purpose and even hopes it can one day solve the problem of resource scarcity and poverty on Earth.

Cubefabs represents Putman's attempt to create low-cost fabricators that use AI to monitor and control every element of fabrication, from the temperature to the speed of production, all in pursuit of making the final product as "atomically precise as possible" to the original design, Putman says. He anticipates that most Cubefabs will be used to create semiconductor chips, but says the facilities could also be used to improve a variety of manufacturing processes, like reducing the materials and time required to develop lab-grown meat. The first Cubefabs are in development now, and Putman anticipates they'll be up and running within 18 months.

A rendering from Cubefabs, a modular, AI-powered fabrication plant.

While Cubefabs are designed to be 1/10th the size of the average semiconductor fabricator, they still need at least one full acre of space to fit all the machines necessary for materials production. Putman got the idea for an AI-driven fabrication plant after an experiment he ran years ago, in which he and his colleagues pitted a human engineer against a 3-D printer powered by AI. The result: The AI agent made stronger, more easily replicable parts than the human engineer.

So will we ever see other Star Trek technology in the real world? Putman says that the Holodeck, a virtual-reality room featured in many of the shows, could become a reality sooner than many anticipate, because of the extreme power of mixed reality and haptics technology. While Putman did recently meet someone who's "working on a Warp Drive," he says we shouldn't expect to be beamed up in a Star Trek Transporter anytime soon.
