All About Junnar Tourism – Forts, Caves, Ghats, Temples & More

Junnar Tourism

Last Updated on March 7, 2024 by admin

Junnar, famous for being the birthplace of erstwhile warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj needs all the attention. Junnar tourism promises to be fulfilling for all kinds of visitors offering many things to do. An easy drive from Pune to Junnar, there are Junnar caves, Junnar fort, temples and nature exploration, making it a must visit destination .

Having lived in Pune for 2 years, I read about the contributions of Shivaji Maharaj and his legacy. Due to his contributions to the region, he is nothing less than a deity among the crowds of Maharashtra.

Having explored the forts that he ruled near Pune such as Lohagad Fort , Sinhagad Fort, Tikona Fort, I wanted to climb all the others, especially Shivneri Fort where he was born. Unfortunately, I couldn’t visit many forts when I lived in Pune. However, I was recently invited by Maharashtra Tourism for the Hindavi Swarajya Mahotsava , a festival commemorating Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s 394th birth anniversary.

While I will talk about the festival in the later part of the post, I want to write about what impressed me most and why Junnar tourism needs to be on the visitor’s list.

ABOUT JUNNAR | HISTORY OF JUNNAR

Located 94 km away from Pune, Shivneri Fort in Junnar is the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Born on 19 February 1630 at Shivneri Fort, Shivaji Maharaj was an Indian ruler and a member of the Bhonsle Maratha clan. He carved out his own independent kingdom by defeating Adilshahi Sultanate of Bijapur that formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire making this area historically important.

But much before that, Junnar has had a historical significance as it was positioned on a crucial trade route. Numerous excavations and legible inscriptions provide evidence of trade connections between the rulers of ancient Junnar and civilizations like Rome and Greece.

Indications suggest that the area served as a toll gate and a favored resting spot for traders. The inscriptions, believed to date back to the reign of Queen Naganika, have become a focal point of interest for historians. They offer valuable insights into the Satavahana dynasty, helping establish records from that era.

Junnar was also an important seat of power for the Satavahana dynasty of Maharashtra.

THINGS TO DO IN JUNNAR | JUNNAR TOURISM

While most visitors are day trippers looking for a one day trip from Pune to Junnar, Junnar has a lot of potential and one can easily spend 3 days here. Whether you are an adventure lover, nature enthusiasts, history fanatic or a devotee, there is something for everyone.

Forts in Junnar

Junnar has not one, not two but 7 mountain forts in its vicinity. Shivneri fort, Chavand fort, Nimgiri fort, Narayangad fort, Hadsar fort, Jivdhan fort and Shindola fort are all present in and around Junnar. While most of them are in ruins, the entry gates are intact. The top of all forts promises splendid views of the Sahyadris and the biodiversity around the foothills of these forts makes nature lovers ask for more.

There are still inscriptions on the fort walls that tell the tales of the bygone era and one needs a guide to descript it.

Shivneri Fort is the most popular place to visit when it comes to Junnar Tourism. Visitors need to cross 7 doors to get to the top of the fort. There is a lot to be explored at Shivneri and it’s ideal for people who love historical places. From the base, one has to climb around 350-400 steps to reach the top which takes approximately 2 hours at leisure.

Some of the must visit places in Shivneri fort are Shivai Temple – the temple of goddess Shivai after whom Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was named, Kadelot – a point on the fort from where criminals were thrown off the fort as a punishment, Ambarkhana – food storage area, Ganga and Jamuna – the freshwater springs on the fort, Statue of Jijabai and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Badami Talav – a water reservoir on the fort.

Temples in Junnar

Junnar is home to 2 Ashtavinayaka temples. The Ashtavinayaka Yatra refers to a pilgrimage to the eight Ganesha temples centered around the city of Pune. The Girijatmaj Temple at Lenyadri and Vighnahar Temple at Ozar are situated 25 km away from each other in Junnar.

The Ozar Ashtavinayak temple is located on the banks of river Kukadi in Junnar. In Hindu mythology, it is said that Ganesha had made Ozar his permanent dwelling after he defeated the demon Vighnasur. Hence the Ganesha here is known as Vighneshwar (the remover of obstacles).

Ozar Ashtavinayak temple

Lenyadri are Buddhist caves located 300 steps atop a hillock and one of these caves has the idol of ‘ Girijatmaj Ganesha ’, which has been carved in a cave wall and can only be viewed from the rear. Mentions of Lenyadri can be observed in the ‘Ganesha Purana’ as Lekhanparvat or Jeernapur. The best part about this temple is that there are no lights in the cave and yet the idol is lit up by the sun-rays!

Other than Ganesha temples, the region has other temples such Brahmanath Temple, Hatkeshwar temple, Omkareshwar temple & Khireshwar temple among others. Each temple has intricate sculptures and ornate walls and pillars.

Caves in Junnar

Junnar has the highest number of caves in Maharashtra – almost 200 and most of them are Buddhist caves. Lenyadri, Naneghat, Chavand, Suleman, Manmodi, Tulja and Shivneri are some of the most popular caves either having inscriptions or frescoes.

Among them all, the Lenyadri cave complex stands out as the most renowned tourist and pilgrimage destination, showcasing a captivating fusion of Buddhist and Hindu beliefs. Among the 30 caves, 28 are viharas (monasteries), while caves 6 and 14 serve as Chaityagrihas (prayer halls). There are approximately 300 steps to reach the caves and Ganesha temple. Visitors are required to remove footwear before entering caves and temple. Since the rocks get really hot, wear socks to avoid burnt feet.

The Lenyadri caves also reveal ties to the early Hinayana phase of Buddhism. Cave 7 is a highly revered Ganesha temple. According to legends, these caves mark the birthplace of Lord Ganesha, as it is believed that Goddess Parvati meditated here for 12 years to conceive him.

Nature tourism in Junnar

Junnar is blessed with Sahyadri ranges (part of Western Ghats) on all sides making it a perfect spot for trekking. It is also the only taluka in Maharashtra state having the highest number of dams such as Pimpalgaon Joga Dam, Chilewadi Pachaghar Dam, Yadgaon Dam, Manik Doh dam and Vadaj dam. The water in each of these dams offer a respite from the sweltering heat and is a perfect hangout spot for picnics (but do not litter). I would discourage swimming because the water is deep and the areas are secluded in case help is needed.

The Western Ghats of Sahyadris always create an amazing ecosystem especially in monsoon where the entire area comes alive with thousands of waterfalls cascading on the hill rocks. Malshej Ghat and Darya Ghat in Junnar are extremely famous for the same. Bikers drive in monsoon all the way from Pune just for this spectacle.

Agrotourism in Junnar

Thanks to the placement of the world’s largest radio telescope, GMRT (Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope), Junnar is untouched by industries in its vicinity. The only small scale factories are the sugar factories due to ample sugarcane farming in the area.

One can still see communities living a simple life doing agricultural activities and cattle rearing. This is why the air is still fresh in Junnar and it is known as the “ Sanitarium of India ”. Visitors actually come to spend time here so as to cure their breathing problems.

Junnar also has a wide range of traditional farming of rice and grapes. And the locals have converted their farms into agro tourism sites inviting tourists from cities to live on the farm.

One particularly interesting agro tourism site is Hmmbrr where the site is developed using indigenous cow species. The entire concept revolves around cow therapy and consuming organic milk and allied products. The scientific and traditional Indian knowledge is the basis of setting up this site and it is sure to question your beliefs and lifestyle.

Adventure sports in Junnar

There are options for adventure sports in Junnar such as zip lining overlooking the Sahyadris, sky biking and Quad bikes or ATVs (all terrain vehicles). This is available right outside Girija Hotel.

When I visited during the Shivneri festival, paramotoring was also available.

Thanks to the many dams in Junnar, a lot of water sport options are also available. Speed boats and pedal boats are some of the options available.

Hindavi Swarajya Mahotsav

The Hindavi Swarajya Mahotsav is celebrated every year at Shivneri Fort in Junnar. Locals dress up in their best traditional attire with saffron flags and procession are held across the town. People from across the Maharashtra state visit Junnar during this time to pay their respects to Shivaji’s legacy in his birth town.

Thankfully, I was able to visit the festival this year (2024) and the celebrations were full of history, immersed in cultural displays, live theater playing the most popular play ‘Janata Raja’ and exhibits paying homage.

Streets were full of memorabilia selling his statues and flags with his face drawn on it. From lively processions to captivating cultural performances, each moment was infused with historical significance and deep respect.

I couldn’t help but be moved by the overwhelming sense of pride and unity that filled the atmosphere, reinforcing the enduring ideals embodied by Shivaji Maharaj.

The pink trumpet flowers blooming on both sides of the road with the ongoing processions just made the whole atmosphere splendid.

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR JUNNAR TOURISM

How to reach junnar.

Junnar can be best reached by road from Pune. It is located 94 km from Pune. Head towards Chakan – Rajgurunagar – Manchar – Narayangaon and reach Junnar.

Mumbai is situated 155 km from Junnar and again the best way to reach via road. To travel from Mumbai use Mumbai Pune Expressway and exit at Talegaon. Head towards Chakan – Rajgurunagar – Peth – Manchar – Kalamb – Narayangaon – Junnar.

There are Maharashtra State Transport Corporation buses (MSRTC) from Mumbai and Pune to Junnar.

Pune Railway Station is the nearest railway station to reach Junnar. Pune is well connected to most cities in India via railway network. Talegaon Dabhade railway station is situated around 82 km from Junnar but not well connected and few trains stop here.

Best time to visit Junnar?

Junnar can be visited all throughout the year. However, summers get really hot and trekking to caves and forts can get arduous. The hot stones can burn feet so wearing comfortable footwear is recommended.

Monsoons are the best time to visit Junnar as the lush landscape transforms into vibrant greenery, and the waterfalls reach their peak magnificence.

Winter is ideal for trekkers, especially considering the relatively cooler temperatures compared to other months.

If you are a history enthusiast, the best is to plan a trip around Shivneri festival. Although the Shivneri fort and all surrounding forts get crowded on 19th February, the festive vibe is really amazing. Hire a local guide who can explain the history and decode the inscriptions. Comment on this blog if you want to know the guide details.

HmmBrr resort junnar

We were visiting Junnar to attend a family wedding function that is when we searched for a resort in Junnar. Thankfully, the search results brought us to this one and we were so grateful to have chanced upon this resort.

For me, HmmBrr is home, it is peace, it is that feeling of oneness with the other beings in our universe, and it is bliss! In our years of travel exploring different cities of our incredible India , I have rarely come across a place where I felt relaxed instantly. This is one such place.

How To Get to Hmmbrr Agro Resort in Junnar?

Hmmbrr Agro Resort is well connected to Mumbai & Pune via roadways. Located at Nimgaon, I could not imagine a resort this beautiful until we reached our destination. We travelled via Mumbai Pune highway, halted in Pune for a few hours, and continued to Junnar from Pune. The roads leading up to this resort are good. They are dotted with beautiful farms and mountains.

Bajra farms near HmmBrr Agro Resort Junnar

Although it is near Pune, especially Malshej, Junnar is still an offbeat destination. It is blessed with the abundance of Mother Nature, and you must visit it once in lifetime. Famous for places like Shivneri, Lenyadri Ashtavinayak temple and several other destinations, you can find more about the places to visit in Junnar in this blog .

HmmBrr Agro Resort Junnar – Rooms

This agro tourism resort is built on a big property and features unique offerings bestowing one a chance to connect with Mother Nature. Surrounded by mountains and infinite greens, the moment I stepped in, I felt I was stepping into a farm.

Mango farms at HmmBrr resort junnar

The owner of the resort, Mr. Chetan Parkhe welcomed us and showed us our room. So, here you will find two categories of room.

  • Chickoo Rooms – built in the middle of a chikoo farm
  • Mango Rooms – built in the middle of a mango farm.

Mango rooms at HmmBrr Junnar

We visited the resort towards the end of May when the mango trees were laden with mangoes. Oh! What a remarkable sight! Therefore, we stayed in the mango room. It was a unit with one bedroom and hall with stairs opening up to the sky. The room was cosy and comfortable, and both rooms had a double bed. We were four of us and could comfortably enjoy our stay here.

Mango farms junnar

The beautiful veranda surrounded by huge mango trees is a sight I can never forget. I have never stayed in an agro resort before and so HmmBrr holds a special place in my heart. Sitting on the charpai bed outside the room, I would gaze at the stars for hours together. The sky was clean and the air, surprisingly cold, for summers. I had the most peaceful sleep here.

Hmmbrr Agro Resort – Food Review

Within the resort, there is a big dining area where the host serves homely meals. The resort package is such that it offers all-inclusive meals and trust me; the food they serve is delicious and healthy. Made from natural ingredients sourced from local farms and cooked by local women, the meal is simple yet delicious, with the goodness of health. I enjoyed each meal at the resort, especially the variety of chutneys.

Hmmbrr Agro Resort Junnar – Overall review

We spent three nights at this beautiful resort and since it had just opened to guests a few weeks ago, there were hardly any rooms occupied. It was as if we had the whole resort for ourselves. A stroll amidst the beautiful trees were soothing to the mind and soul. It is one place where you can disconnect with the social world and just enjoy the company of the nature. The peace of just walking in these lanes is indescribable.

junnar agro tourism information

My family especially my daughter loved her stay here. The best part was the hospitality extended by the host, Chetan Parkhe. At least once a day, he met us to take our feedback. He also shared his story on building this sustainable resort. How he is working towards strengthening his local community, uplifting their living standards by offering them the necessary skills to enhance their livelihood.

He has done a great amount of work in building a cloud kitchen, which also serves food to the resort. He is encouraging local women to up their communication skills and grow the community kitchen to serve more resorts around Junnar. Even the guide who went with us as we explored the diverse landscape of Junnar was a wonderful person and took good care of us.

Final words

Hmmbrr Agro Resort Junnar is a beautiful resort and I highly recommend a stay here. Living amidst a farm and a visit to a cowshed are rare experiences that connects us to our roots. These humble experiences after all makes our life peaceful.

Abstract Tourism is the third largest industry of the world after garments and gems-jewellery industry. Over the years tourism became one of the largest and fastest-growing economic sectors in the world. In the year 2012, the world tourist arrival crossed 1000 million (1 billion), which gives US$ 1075 billion in return. Tourism also contributed 9% of GDP (direct, indirect and induced) in world in year 2012 (UNWTO, 2013). According to United Nations World Tourism Organization Statistics Report-2013, the share of silk route regions i.e. Europe, Middle East and Asia and the Pacific is more than 75% (more than 800 million) in world international tourism arrivals. Revival of ancient silk route for not only trade purposes but also for tourism will lead to new dimension of tourism in world. Ecotourism is one of the very sensitive types of tourism and is amongst the very demanding segment of tourism industry. To throw light on ecotourism, various definitions have been given by authors and specialist to explain the ecotourism. A Mexican architect, environmentalist, Hector Ceballos-Lascuráin, who was given credit for using the term first time “Ecotourism” in 1983, defines as the activity which respects the environment, encourage and promote the well being of local people. The different synonyms of ecotourism are nature-tourism, agro-tourism, responsible tourism, sustainable tourism etc. India is very rich its natural resources having variety of flora and fauna, which are slowly disappearing due to urbanization and unsustainable development in an area. Many of the places are loosing their characteristics of natural beauty due to mass tourism. Tourism, if unplanned may cause adverse impact on nature but ecotourism is activity which helps in utilising the resources in optimal way by supporting preservation of natural resources. To save environment and promote ecotourism, proper policy, plannings are required to stop uncontrolled development. There should be separate rules and regulations for local people, tourist visiting there and travel & tour operating companies who are promoting a place as eco-destination. It is our responsibility to study ecotourism issues properly and apply at the different places. Ecotourism could be best way to sustain natural sites and development of an area. This study is review of ecotourism planning at different parts of world and applying the concepts and results in local areas. The Jaunsar-Bawar region of Uttrakhand state in India has been taken as study area for community development through ecotourism. Madhya Pradesh is a wildlife tourism destination in India. However, some Protected Areas are not developed, and their importance is not well-known. Weak management practices and low motivating factors for staff, lack of ownership among the communities were some of the restricting factors why they have not been able to develop to their full potential. In order to support their development, organizations having corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds were identified from various districts of Madhya Pradesh viz. Indore, Dhar, Satna, Katni, Singrauli and Dewas. The primary objective of this study is to throw light on their potential, to generate awareness about their potential and how they can be promoted to boost ecotourism with the help of all concerned stakeholders’ participation.

Abstract:-Ecotourism is a modern phenomenon emerged for conservation of nature with the enjoyment of nature in tourism. Gaganbawada is having very rich biodiversity with various types of ecotourism destinations. This area is having number of lakes and small hills with dense forests which can be attraction for the tourists who seek for nature based tourism. Geographically, it is isolated from the developed destinations of tourism. Due to the lack of transportation facilities it is hidden from the tourists. It has potential for the religious as well as ecotourism. The attention of this paper is to focus the potentialities of this tourist place.

Researcher's World: Journal of Arts, Science and Commerce

The aim of the present paper is to study the ecotourism potential of Salher Fort and to study the physical and biological features of the study area and to find the role of stake holders in sustainable tourism and environment friendly development. Ecotourism is defined as ‘responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and sustains the well being of local people.’ The domestic tourists visiting Maharashtra doubled during the last decade, from 41.29 lakhs in 1991 to 84.8 lakhs in 2001, whereas the number of foreign tourists visiting Maharashtra increased from 7 million 1991 to 8 million in 2001. (Tourism Policy of Maharashtra – 2006, DTCA). Field visits and semi-structured interviews in an informal manner have been organized to collect the primary data. Target group has been set for an action plan in the form of the tourists and then comes the hotels, forest department and local indigenous people of the area. Salher fort is one of the hill forts in Western Ghat of Maharashtra. Salher is located at 200 43’ 50’’ N latitude and 730 56’45’’ Elongitudes. It has the distinction of being the highest fort in the Sahyadris. This site has a great ecotourism potentiality. The environment and culture of this place is undisturbed by unchecked growth that observed in city area. Tribal people of this area have their own culture and traditions. The researcher summed up the results like Period of Stay, Tourist disliking about the area, Transportation used, Occupation, Age and sex wise distribution, local food, craft and culture, season wise inflow of tourists to the area, benefits from tourism, expectations of local people from the ecotourism, etc have been studied thoroughly. The researcher is finally concluded that, the Salher fort is still unspoiled natural place. This site is an ecotourist attraction having good biodiversity, pleasing beauty of nature and ruggedness of physical landscape along with rich social and cultural heritage. The researcher tries to expose the ecotourism potentiality of Salher fort in the present paper. The present paper will be immensely helpful to the students, scholars, researchers, tourists, and the Government and will be a modest contribution in this field. Keywords: Ecotourism, Salher Fort, biodiversity, Tourists, Tribal People.

The practices and propositions of tourism have experienced a paradigm shift over the years. It is an unvarnished fact that a community driven, low-impact ecotourism will certainly maintain the integrity of the fragile destinations such as the magnificent tourist spots in the Great Himalayas of India. The main reason for affirmatively emphasising this aspect is that ecotourism and its practices are all about uniting communities, conservation and sustainable travel. The present research work highlights the role of tourism in the preservation of the fragile habitat of Sangla is essentially the need of the hour. It is also obligatory to discover the functioning of ecotourism ventures in the remote lands such as Sangla Valley, home to exotic natural wealth. The purpose of this paper underpins the conservation-oriented work carried out in Sangla Valley while laying accent-on the impacts of climate change and environmental issues faced in the region around the famous Banjara Camps and Retreat. Qualitative analysis was employed in this particular study. The qualitative data which were collected from the various sources were analysed using analysis techniques such as thematic content analysis and empirical data analysis. The major outcomes of the work lucidly indicate the fact that people are not aware about the exactitude of the concepts and definitions of the technical terms, albeit they are well informed of the basic concepts of ecotourism and climate change and they realise the need to conserve and protect the environment. Tourism in the region is not very well regulated and there is no positive check on the number of tourists visiting the valley. The analytical output affirms the fact that awareness must be created among the tourists as well as the local community members to spruce-up the need to protect the environment and fight climate change. The region could be split up into various zones based on the fragility and the endeavours of resource conservation of the area and visitation must be allowed in the corresponding regions only. The study advocates that the core area must always be maintained intact and should not be prone to any kind of pollution or external encounter.

Journal of Multidisciplinary Research

Kaziranga illustrates one of the unchanged National Parks in the northeast region of India; being a part of the Himalayan range it has a huge potentiality for implementing successful wildlife ecotourism. This national park was declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1985 and recognized as a "biodiversity hotspot". The park with its rich biodiversity is the preferred destination of domestic and international tourists. This study investigates the environmental impact of tourism activities in Kaziranga National Park. In this paper, an attempt has been made to quest the path to minimize the negative impact on the environment by applying the concept of ecotourism. It was observed that in the last few years, the illegal poaching of animals and road accidents have been increased. A decrease in elephant population implicit the conflict of tourism with the conservation biodiversity.

Dr Nandagopal Paramesh

Ecotourism is the latest buzz in the tourism industry globally. The main concept of ecotourism is to have a balance between development and conservation. In the latest years it has become an eco-selling tool for revenue flows. The four components to be involved in having a balanced ecotourism is Wildlife, Eco tourists, Management and Community. It's very hard to find a well-managed ecotourism sites currently. Thus, an attempt was made to evaluate the balanced ecotourism in Yaana Reserve Forest of Karnataka. Several site visits were made to Yaana Reserve Forest and wildlife diversity was studied to develop the study area as a potential ecotourism site. Interviews were conducted to the Eco tourists visiting the study area, Management of Yaana Reserve Forest and the local communities living in and around the study area using questionnaires. It was observed from the study that ecotourism is in its primitive stage in Yaana Reserve Forest, even after having its own religious and historical importance the study area has not been developed as a potential ecotourism site due to the lack of coordination between society and the management. INTRODUCTION The term ecotourism was coined by Ceballos-Lascuràin in 1983, and was initially used to describe nature-based travel to relatively undisturbed areas with an emphasis on education. The concept has, however, developed to a scientifically based approach to the planning, management and development of sustainable tourism and activities. Ecotourism planning is the much needed aspect that could contribute to comprehensive development of tourism, ecosystem management, biodiversity conservation and enhancement of economic status of the local participatory communities. Ecotourism has become one of the fastest-growing sectors of the tourism industry, growing annually by 10-15% worldwide. South Africa is one of the countries that are reaping significant economic benefits from ecotourism, but negative effects-including physical displacement of persons, gross violation of fundamental rights, and environmental hazards-far outweigh the medium-term economic benefits. It has been reported that the isolated desert city of Jaisalmer (Rajasthan, northwest India) now receives over 200, 000 visitors per year, mainly as the result of the promotion of camel safaris to the Thar Desert. Jaisalmer has a camel surplus because of mechanized farming, with animals redeployed into the safari business. It is generally believed that ecotourism will foster responsible tourist behavior, conservation of important wildlife habitats and ecosystems, appreciation of local cultures and traditional life styles, and provision of sustainable forms of livelihood for people living in remote and communities. It was reported that due to the high avian diversity in Bisle Reserve forest, Karnataka could help in conducting the activities like bird watching and observing which would help ecotourism activity to educate the importance of birds to eco tourists. Major attributes of the green tourism include environmental conservation and education and distribution of income to local people based on strong partnership. Green tourism considers tourism development as an integral part of a national and regional development. When the people were interviewed in Andaman's at airport around 92% of the people were visiting for holidaying purpose and remaining 8% were traveling for miscellaneous and business purpose, this shows that due to the development of ecotourism in Andaman's there is more revenue for the state government.
