The Rolling Stones setlist: Here are all the songs on their Hackney Diamonds Tour

It doesn’t matter that both Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are 80.

As long as they’re sharing a stage, the Rolling Stones will continue to defy age and energy.

The band’s 16-city stadium sprint – sponsored, appropriately, by AARP – kicked off April 28 at NRG Stadium in Houston and will play through July 17 in Santa Clara, California. In between, the Rolling Stones will visit cities including Las Vegas, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Cleveland and Chicago.

In October, the band released “Hackney Diamonds,” their first new album since 2005. For this complementary tour, Jagger, Richards and Ronnie Wood – along with durable supporting players Chuck Leavell, Darryl Jones, Matt Clifford, Karl Denson, Tim Ries, Steve Jordan (who assumed rhythm duties after the 2021 death of original drummer Charlie Watts ) and background vocalists Bernard Fowler and Chanel Haynes – shined on stage for two hours.

The 18-song set was stuffed with iconic rock anthems including “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Start Me Up,” and “Miss You”, along with a smattering of new songs from “Hackney,” including the Grammy-nominated “ Angry .”

Stadiums, which the band has played for nearly 50 years, still suit their blues-splattered rock and indefatigable frontman Jagger, who still slithers effortlessly, remains an undisputed legend.

The Rolling Stones show no signs of slowing down as they begin their latest tour

The Rolling Stones are showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon

HOUSTON -- Time marches on and all good things must come to an end. But don’t tell that to The Rolling Stones.

What many believe to be the greatest rock ’n’ roll band in the world showed no signs of slowing down anytime soon as they kicked off their latest tour Sunday night at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

The Stones have been touring for more than 60 years. Frontman Mick Jagger and lead guitarist Keith Richards are both 80, with guitarist Ronnie Wood not far behind at 76. Their tour is being sponsored in part by AARP.

But during a vibrant two-hour show, the Stones played with the energy of band that was on tour for the first time.

“It’s great to be back in the Lone Star State,” Jagger told the packed stadium, filled with longtime fans, many wearing faded concert shirts from previous tours.

Jagger often strutted up and down the stage with seemingly boundless energy while Richards and Wood played many familiar guitar riffs beloved by fans. Jagger often led the audience in sing-alongs.

“The energy level is up and it’s always up with them. The age doesn’t show,” Dale Skjerseth, the Stones’ production director, said Friday before the concert.

The Stones have hit the road to support the release of their latest album, “Hackney Diamonds,” the band’s first record of original music since 2005.

Houston was the first stop on the band’s 16-city tour across the U.S. and Canada. Other cities on the tour include New Orleans, Philadelphia and Vancouver, British Columbia. The tour ends on July 17 in Santa Clara, California.

During Sunday's 18-song concert set list, the Stones played several tracks off the new record, including lead single “Angry.” They also played classics including “Sympathy for the Devil,” “Gimme Shelter,” Honky Tonk Women” and “Start Me Up.”

After playing “Beast of Burden,” Jagger said that concertgoers in Houston had voted to include it on the set list.

“You can’t go wrong with that,” one man in the audience could be heard screaming.

The Stones also played some unexpected choices, including “Rocks Off,” from their 1972 double album “Exile on Main St.” and “Out of Time,” a 1966 song that Jagger said during the concert had not ever been played by the band in the U.S.

With the 2021 death of drummer Charlie Watts, the Stones are now comprised of the core trio of Jagger, Richards and Wood. On Sunday, they were backed by various musicians including two keyboardists, a new drummer, backup singers and a brass section.

While the stage was surrounded by a large collection of video screens projecting images throughout the show, the main focus of the concert was the band and their songs

Before Sunday’s concert, Jagger spent time on Friday touring NASA’s Johnson Space Center in suburban Houston, posting photos on his Instagram account of him with astronauts inside Mission Control.

“I had an amazing trip to the space center,” Jagger said.

When asked if the band might be thinking about retiring, Skjerseth said he doubts that will happen.

“This is not the end. They’re very enthused,” he said.

This story has been updated to correct a song title to “Gimme Shelter,” not “Gimmer Shelter.”

The Rolling Stones announce tour dates for 2024 across North America

The Rolling Stones perform in Solna, Sweden.

Last month, The Rolling Stones released  “Hackney Diamonds,”  their first album of original material in 18 years.

Tuesday, the legendary English band announced they’re taking it on the road.

Starting on April 28 in Houston and concluding in Santa Clara, California, on July 17, the Stones will make their way across the U.S. and Canada.

The tour hits 16 major cities, including New Orleans, Las Vegas, Seattle, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Denver, Chicago, Los Angeles and Vancouver, British Columbia.

Fans can expect to experience the Stones’ most popular hits as well as new tracks from “Hackney Diamonds.”

The Stones last performed across the U.S. in 2021 for their No Filter tour, marking the first time the band had toured without drummer Charlie Watts since 1963. Watts, the self-effacing and unshakeable Rolling Stones drummer who helped anchor one of rock’s greatest rhythm sections,  died in August 2021. He was 80.

Tickets for the Stones’ North American Hackney Diamonds tour go on sale on Dec. 1.

As expected, the Rolling Stones have announced they are going back on the road in 2024 behind their recently released “ Hackney Diamonds” album . The group, led by core members Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ron Wood, will perform in 16 cities across the U.S. and Canada, playing a combination of classics, deep cuts and songs from the new album, according to the announcement. The tour, which launches on April 28 and wraps on July 17, is promoted by AEG Presents’ Concerts West.

Popular on Variety

The group last played North America on the “No Filter” tour in 2021, just weeks after the death of drummer Charlie Watts, who had missed exactly one concert since joining the group in 1962. The forthcoming tour hits most major markets, along with a stop at the 2024 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival for a special performance on May 2. Full tour routing is below.

The Rolling Stones Announce 2024 Stadium Tour in Support of 'Hackney Diamonds' Album — See the Dates!

The Rolling Stones' upcoming 16-date run marks the U.K. rock band's first U.S. concerts since 2019's No Filter Tour

MARK SELIGER

The Rolling Stones are taking Hackney Diamonds to North America!

On Tuesday, the legendary U.K. rock band announced the Stones Tour '24 Hackney Diamonds, sponsored by AARP, a 16-date run of stadium concerts across the United States and Canada set for next year.

Kicking off April 28 in Houston, the Rolling Stones will perform shows in cities including New Orleans, Las Vegas, Seattle, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and more before wrapping on July 17 in Santa Ana, California.

The Stones Tour '24 Hackney Diamonds marks the "Jumpin' Jack Flash" group's first time returning to the U.S. for an official string of concerts since 2019's No Filter Tour — as well as its first since the death of longtime drummer Charlie Watts in August 2021.

Tickets for the upcoming tour go on sale Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. local time, with more information available at the Rolling Stones' website .

Before releasing Hackney Diamonds last month, the band held an intimate concert at club Racket in New York City, where members Mick Jagger , Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood performed songs including such as “Shattered,” “Angry,” “Whole Wide World” and "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

The performance also included the live debut of Hackney Diamonds track "Sweet Sounds of Heaven" with a surprise appearance from Lady Gaga , who provides guest vocals on the song.

The Stones  announced  Hackney Diamonds   at a press event in London earlier this month, where Jagger, Richards and Wood took the stage to talk to  Jimmy Fallon  about the album.

"We wouldn't have put this album out if we didn't really like it," Jagger, 80, said to Fallon. "We must say that we are quite pleased with it. We’re not big-headed but we hope you like it."

In an emotional moment, the trio also touched on what it was like to record the album without Watts. "Ever since Charlie’s gone it’s different, he’s number four," Richards, 79, said. "He’s missing, he’s up there. Of course he's missed incredibly."

No group embodies classic rock like The Rolling Stones. Over its six-decade career, the legendary band has defined rock ‘n’ roll with fun, energetic music rooted in the blues. Though new music genres come and go, The Rolling Stones’ simple, punchy rock sound has appealed to every new generation.

However, the band didn’t become a phenom overnight. The Rolling Stones started to build its music career before its official debut in 1962. It all began with rhythm guitarist/vocalist and frontman Mick Jagger and lead guitarist Keith Richards. The pair met when they were young while attending primary school together. Eventually, they drifted apart and encountered each other again by chance 10 years later. Thanks to their mutual friend Dick Taylor, Jagger and Richards discovered their collective love of music.

Soon enough, the three joined several bands, shaping their creative talents and honing their instrumental skills. After sparking interest among many local fans and new listeners, the group gained new members like rhythm guitarist Brian Jones, keyboardist Ian Stewart, and drummer Charlie Watts.

When 1962 arrived, Bill Wyman took Dick Taylor’s spot as bassist. The group’s success grew throughout the UK, especially with the help of tracks like “I Wanna Be Your Man” written by The Beatles. Paul McCartney and John Lennon exclusively penned the popular song and let The Rolling Stones elevate its rising reputation. Before releasing its self-titled debut album in 1964, The Rolling Stones landed chart spots in both the UK and U.S. The band was well on its way to becoming a household name.

As The Rolling Stones’ discography grew, so did the band’s popularity. Records like The Rolling Stones No. 2, 12 x 5, and The Rolling Stones, Now! laid a sturdy foundation for a future in music. However, the international smash “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” proved the band was here to stay. It sat comfortably on charts across the globe, including the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Ultimately, it cleared the way for The Rolling Stones’ next studio album, Out of Our Heads.

The Rolling Stones followed up every big hit with even more renewed vigor. It dominated the 60s thanks to numerous studio albums and certified chart-topping singles like “Paint It Black,” Ruby Tuesday,” and “Mother’s Little Helper.” Then, it took over the 70s and 80s with a signature image and sound. The Rolling Stones stayed relevant and influential in the ever-changing music climate. As the band evolved, bandmates rotated in and out, resulting in the induction of newer members such as bassist and guitarist Ronnie Wood.

As rock music changed, The Rolling Stones never lost its spark. Adaptation and evolution were crucial in helping the group keep up with the times. Over the years, it constantly reinvented itself without straying from its original roots: fast-paced, energetic rock ‘n’ roll. The Rolling Stones continued to take over every era, including the current music scene. Its most recent LP Tattoo You hit the stands in 2021 and reminded the world the group was still going strong.

Although it faced many challenges, the band has remained true to loyal listeners and provided stellar shows across the globe. Numerous sold-out tours, live TV performances, and more allow fans to witness Jagger’s eccentric yet boisterous on-stage persona. Backed up by his friends and talented bandmates, the group provides a polished experience for every dedicated concertgoer. The Rolling Stones still tours today, with no signs of stopping.

Live reviews

Sixteen hours after I left my house, and 50 years after forming as a band, The Rolling Stones took the gigantic stage at 9:30pm. The empty seats filled in quickly once Sheeran had taken his leave. At 50,000 strong, it was quite a site to see the crowd on their feet as the Stones kicked off their 3rd performance at Arrowhead Stadium (their first was ’75, their latest was in ’89) with “Start Me Up” from Tattoo You. The song is over 30 years old, but was nothing more than a baby when compared to most of the set list. “It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll” and “Tumbling Dice” set the precedent for a show that would include mostly material from before I was born. “Doom And Gloom” was the exception to the rule, but served to prove that even a mediocre song can be more than magnificent in the right hands. If I’m being honest, the main reason I was seeing The Rolling Stones was to check them off my list of legends. I had heard stories, but I couldn’t wrap my head around that fact that a bunch of 70-year-olds could still put on an epic show. Sure, the giant screens and incredible soundsystem and fireworks were to be expected, I even figured they would sound pretty good, but nothing prepared me for how animated they would be. Mick Jagger was a diva less than half his age as he strutted his shit up and down the catwalk. Wardrobe changes, grabbing phones from the crowd to take selfies, reminiscing about things that happened back in ’74…he was on point the entire night. - See more at: http://ilistensoyoudonthaveto.com/2015/07/01/the-rolling-stones-arrowhead-stadium-06-27-15/#sthash.hANemdD3.dpuf

"I know it's only Rock and Roll but I like it". The Rolling Stones "live in concert" is an experience not to be missed. From the moment, Mick, Keith and the rest of Stones hit the stage until the final note of the encore - any room - no matter what size - will be filled with an energy level that is unparalleled!

No two concerts are ever the same when it comes to the "Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the world". If you have not yet seen the Rolling Stones I encourage you to do so. I loved seeing the Rolling Stones when growing up in Toronto - at every possible venue in the Stones "home away from home".

Each tour would feature band rehearsals at places like the Toronto airport hanger or at a local Bayview North Toronto school. Many a Stones tour would kick off in Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens, CNE Stadium, Skydome and Air Canada Centre among others. Heck, when Keith Richards was busted in Toronto - he was sentenced to perform a charity concert for the CNIB in Oshawa.

I have most of the Rolling Stones catalogue of music and DVDs and have thoroughly enjoyed the groups who have played in an opening capacity with the Stones. They helped introduce us to Ike and Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, George Thorogood and the Destroyers and the White Stripes among others! You will never go wrong buying a Stones concert ticket. Make sure you do before it is too late.

Hi there. The Rolling Stones in Prague the best show ever. The concert was absolutely amazing, fantastic, super great. The performance of the Rolling stones is in the highest quality, they are the living legend,I love them for ever and wish to all of them the best off everything. Thank you for unforgettable experience. So this was about the show, but I would like to tell you my worst nightmare I also had just before the concert. I bought three tickets from Viagogo office and to my horror I find out that the tickets were not valid and they were not in database. I paid 23.000KC.So to get to the event I've had to buy another three tickets for standing. THERE WAS MORE fans off the Rolling stones with some experience. I don't what to do about the matter. So this was MY best experience and the worst. Yours Luda Horakova Krasicka 53 Prostejov Czech republic .

It doesn't matter where you sit at a Stones show, it's going to be memorable. This was my first time seeing them, much of my family have seen them multiple times. Heinz Field is an ok venue. Being so far back, the sound was just a smidge off but the atmosphere was still awesome. It rained heavily most of the day but by some great fortune, the clouds parted and the weather was perfect right before showtime. The blazed through hit after hit, with fireworks and lights and spectacle. The best thing, however, is how much Mick Jagger moves and his dancing and prancing. The dude is 72 and still has all the energy and charisma he had back in the day. It's insane. I defy anyone who can find a better showman and frontman than Mick Jagger. Keith, Ronnie, Charlie and the backing band were all incendiary. 10/10 would see them again.

It was a wonderful concert! My group and I had so much fun! Although we were not so close to the stage, thanks to the 3 gigantic screens it was possible to enjoy the concert fully. Mick Jagger has so much energy!!! They not only played most of their best songs, but invited Juanes ( one of the most famous Colombian singers to play guitarr and sing one song together with Mick. The public went crazy! At the end also invited the Javeriana Chorus (also Colombian) to sing with the group. Great!

They started the concert with Jumping Jack Flash and then played as second a song picked by the colombian public in the internet. I found that very good.

My group and I flew from Venezuela to Bogotá for the concert

The Rolling Stones rock!!!!!

LOVED IT!!!!

I've seen several live performance by the Stones on TV and while I have been amazed by their energy levels considering their ages, I also have thought at times that their performances were lacking a bit. Boy, was I wrong after seeing them live at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City! Mick Jagger melted my face off with his energy, cockiness (man, does he strut!) and powerful vocals. They were on-point for the entire show, and I thought it was cool that they brought opener Ed Sheeran onstage as well. As a 30-something male, The Rolling Stones have always been on my bucket list, and I'm glad I had a chance to see them in person. I would definitely recommend their show and would go see them again. Hopefully they keep on rocking another 10-15 years!

The doors opened at 4:45pm ( late by 45 mins). Support act ( Richard Ashcroft) didn’t come on till 7pm and played for 45 minutes and they were really good. Stones came on at 8:15pm and played till 10:30. Utterly amazing, Mick Jagger can put on a show! The rest of the guys do look really, really old. I felt for Charlie Watts he looked sore..

However, £5.20 for a can of Tennats lager ( 89p in Morrisons) come on Murrayfield, you made a mental load of money. I’ve never seen so many pissed people at a concert, but enjoying themselves.

Other reviews suggested they set was 22 songs, I counted 19 so don’t know if we were short changed because of the 1030 curfew. Great concert, T shirts £30 come on guys ...

The Rolling Stones concert was absolutely amazing. The singing, the music, the lighting, the fireworks and those large screens were great. They strutted their stuff through all the favourite numbers and some other great songs. Before you go, read the list of items not allowed inside the concert because you will lose them. Handbags larger than A5 size not allowed, including bumbags, cameras and camera bags, to name a few. All in All, everything went very smoothly, everyone loved it and we all had an amazing night, never to be forgotten.

The greatest rock n roll band in the world - No doubt about it. Mick, Keef, Charlie and Ronnie were sensational. From the opening Street Fighting Man to the encores of Gimme Shelter and Satisfaction they were as great as ever. Mick was the imperious frontman, Keith the axe wielding lunatic, Charlie the rock upon which the driving rhythms of Paint it Black are built, Ronnie the joker whose rhythm guitar convinces you the Stones play the devil’s music. Sensational just sensational. It was a privilege to be there.

The Rolling Stones Announce Rescheduled 2021 ‘No Filter’ Tour Dates

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

The Rolling Stones are returning to the states this fall to make up for postponed 2020 dates. The 13-date tour begins September 26th at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis, Missouri, and wraps up November 20th at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. See tickets here .

They are hitting most of the cities they planned on playing in 2020, but the shows in Vancouver, Louisville, Cleveland and Buffalo were canceled due to scheduling difficulties. To make up for that, they’ve added stops in Los Angeles and Las Vegas and will also be playing Jazz Fest in New Orleans.

Tickets for the 2020 shows will be honored at these new dates. Fans with tickets to canceled shows will be contacted by Ticketmaster with information about refunds, and they’ll also be given a possible “priority offer” to tickets in nearby cities.

“I’m so excited to get back on the stage again,” Mick Jagger said in a statement, “and want to thank everyone for their patience. See you soon!”

“We’re back on the road!” added Keith Richards. “See you there!”

The tour was originally supposed to kick off May 8th, 2020 at SDCCU Stadium in San Diego, California and wrap up July 9th at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia after a 15-show run. But the band was forced to postpone due to the pandemic.

“We’re hugely disappointed to have to postpone the tour,” the band said at the time. “We are sorry to all the fans who were looking forward to it as much as we were, but the health and safety of everyone has to take priority. We will all get through this together — and we’ll see you very soon.”

During the downtime, the group released the new song “Living In a Ghost Town.” It was largely written before the pandemic, but they changed some of the lyrics to reflect the new reality in the world. They haven’t released an album of new songs since 2005’s A Bigger Bang , but they have spent a lot of time in the studio in recent years.

“We’ve got another five or six tracks and there’s a lot of sort of soul feel about it for some reason without anybody intending to,” Keith Richards said last year. “Obviously right now we’ve got nothing else to do but write some more songs, right?”

'I'm going to bust a gut and do it': Dolly Parton dug deep to become a 'Rockstar'

The Stones – Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood – are basking in a bit of a studio revival with “Hackney Diamonds,” their first new album since 2005 .

The album debuted at No. 1 on the U.K. albums chart and No. 3 on the Billboard 200 album chart, making them the first act with a top 10 album each decade since the 1960s.

The single, “Angry,” is nominated for best rock song at the Grammy Awards on Feb. 4. (The band has three career wins .)

“Hackney Diamonds” is also the Stones’ first album since drummer Charlie Watts died in 2021.

The band premiered songs from the album at an intimate, invitation-only show of a few hundred people at the Racket NYC club in October, running through a handful of visceral new tracks and leaning into classics including “Shattered” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” with youthful vigor. Lady Gaga, who sings on the album track “Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” joined Jagger for a thunderous duet.

The Rolling Stones: Hackney Diamonds review – if this is the end, they’re going out with a bang

(Polydor) The Stones’ first album of original material in 18 years crackles with a sense of purpose, with fabulous Keith Richards riffs and Mick Jagger sounding genuinely energised

T he eighth song on the 24th studio album by the Rolling Stones is called Live By the Sword, a succession of variations on the titular maxim about dying by the sword. In truth, it’s not one of the strongest lyrics on Hackney Diamonds. You rather get the impression Mick Jagger came up with the song’s central conceit, realised he’d run out of ideas for variations on the aforementioned titular maxim around the end of the first verse, but boldly decided to press on regardless. “If you’re deep in the crime, you’re deep in the slime,” he avers. “If you live like a whore, you better be hardcore”: well, if you say so, mate.

The artwork for Hackney Diamonds.

Then again, you could make a convincing case that the lyrics scarcely matter. Live By the Sword is a raging blast that reunites the version of the Rolling Stones extant from the mid-70s to the early 90s – the drums were recorded by Charlie Watts at his final sessions before his death in 2021; Bill Wyman is on bass – with the addition of Elton John hammering away in the sideman role once occupied by the late Ian Stewart. Not for the last time on Hackney Diamonds, it recalls the moment in the late 70s when the Rolling Stones were briefly galvanised by the arrival of punk, whether they would have admitted it or not: it’s of a piece with Some Girls’ Respectable, Emotional Rescue’s Where the Boys Go and Neighbours, a refugee from the Emotional Rescue sessions that wound up on 1981’s Tattoo You. Jagger, meanwhile, sings the whole thing with yowling conviction, even when you haven’t got a clue what he actually means, as per the business about living like a whore. He sounds energised and engaged, a far cry from the Jagger you occasionally heard on Stones albums in the 80s and 90s, who didn’t seem to be singing so much as dutifully rearranging a collection of well-worn mannerisms and vocal tics to fit the songs.

And, in fairness, the lyrics occasionally essay a striking line. “If you live by the clock, you’re in for a shock,” sings Jagger at one juncture, which is among a number of lyrical references to the passing of time (“is my future all in the past?” asks Keith Richards on his solo turn Tell Me Straight) and a neat summation of the Rolling Stones’ more recent recording career. It is 18 years since they last released an album of original material, a pretty staggering gap, even by the standards of a band who clearly worked out in the mid-90s that the business of touring had become completely uncoupled from that of making albums: you no longer needed to do the latter in order to make millions doing the former. You might have been forgiven for believing that 2005’s A Bigger Bang would be the last album of their own songs the Rolling Stones would release, with 2016’s Blue & Lonesome a neatly cyclical finale: the Stones ending their recording career the same way they started it, with an album of blues covers.

That it isn’t may be down to Andrew Watt, who’s gone from working with Camila Cabello, Justin Bieber and Dua Lipa to a new role as producer by appointment to the rock aristocracy: Ozzy Osbourne, Elton John, Iggy Pop and Paul McCartney, who apparently recommended him to the Stones after sessions with Don Was floundered. Watt isn’t above catapulting his more venerable charges into the 21st century – he had Ozzy Osbourne singing through AutoTune on last year’s Patient Number 9 and did the same to Elton John on the Britney Spears collaboration Hold Me Closer – but he’s obviously realised that what a 21st-century audience wants the Rolling Stones to do is sound like the Rolling Stones.

The sparkle to the choruses of Angry and Depending on You (both co-written by Watt) suggest the presence of someone who knows how to make contemporary hits, and there’s a light modern sheen to the production that prevents it sounding like a determined recreation of the Stones’ past, even if guest star Lady Gaga nearly hospitalises herself trying to evoke the spirit of Merry Clayton, fabled Gimme Shelter guest vocalist, on Sweet Sounds of Heaven. But there’s nothing resembling the clumsy lunges for trip hop-inspired contemporaneity that ensued when the Stones employed the Dust Brothers and Danny Saber on 1997’s Bridges to Babylon and Mick Jagger has been mercifully dissuaded from calling once more on the services of British rapper Skepta. Indeed, Lady Gaga aside, the star guests stay off the mic and seem happy in the background. McCartney contributes an uncharacteristically distorted bassline to Bite My Head Off; both Elton John and Stevie Wonder stick to the piano stool.

Behind its terrible title, which makes the new Rolling Stones album sound like a pole-dancing club in Clapton, and its abysmal artwork, which makes it look like a mid-price hair metal compilation, what Hackney Diamonds has in profusion is really good songs: the ramshackle country honk of Dreamy Skies; the appealingly languid Driving Me Too Hard; Get Close, which hangs on a fabulous, quintessentially Keith Richards riff. Clearly the sessions weren’t without their hiccups – in a recent interview, new drummer Steve Jordan complained that the songs were “too poppy”, the guest stars superfluous and, tellingly, that Jagger and Richards should have produced it with his help – but the end product crackles with a sense of purpose: it’s hard to avoid the conclusion that, with mortality impinging on their thoughts after Watts’ passing, all concerned wanted the Jagger-Richards songwriting partnership to bow out with something noticeably stronger than A Bigger Bang.

If that was their aim, they’ve succeeded, coming up with that rarest of things: a latter-day Rolling Stones album that requires no special pleading. A sense of finality is added by the closing track, a raw, acoustic version of the song which gave the band their name, Muddy Waters’ Rolling Stone Blues, complete with the kind of shiver-inducing harmonica with which Jagger punctuated Blue & Lonesome and Richards playing a 1930s Gibson guitar similar to that used by the most legendary bluesman of the lot, Robert Johnson. It’s fantastic. “How do we finish?” pleads Richards on Tell Me Straight, a question to which Hackney Diamonds gives an emphatic possible answer.
