4AllFamily Humira Travel Case: Traveling with Humira made easier!

Humira is a prescription medicine used for the symptomatic treatments of various inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Crohn’s disease (CD), and others. It’s one of the best-selling drugs in the World and comes in the form of self-injectable pens or prefilled syringes.

Like most injectable liquid medicines, Humira is sensitive to high temperatures and temperature changes. It requires refrigeration when not in use and needs to be protected from the heat once open. Because of these specific storage requirements , traveling with Humira can be challenging. How to make sure your Humira pen stays refrigerated and protected from the outside heat while you’re traveling?

How to travel with Humira?

Traveling with chronic diseases like rheumatoid arthritis or Crohn's disease raises a great number of questions. Keeping Humira cool is a big concern for people traveling with this medicine. Another one is about documentation: what papers do you need to travel nationally or internationally with Humira?

How to keep Humira cool while traveling?

Like similar injectable medications used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease such as Enbrel , Actemra , Cimzia , Orencia , Taltz , Kevzara , Cosentyx , or Simponi , Humira (Adalimumab) is sensitive to temperature and light. It quickly deteriorates and loses efficiency when exposed to high temperatures or direct light.

Traveling with refrigerated medications requires carefulness and organization. Whether you’re flying, taking a cruise ship, road tripping through the States, or spending a day at the beach, your life-saving medicine needs to stay cool, so it does not spoil.

According to Abbvie , Humira’s manufacturer, “ Humira needs to be stored in a refrigerator ( (2°C-8°C/36°F-46°F) in its original container and protected from the light until it’s used (…). It may be stored at room temperature up to a maximum of 25°C/77°F for a period of up to 14 days, with protection from light.”

To make sure your Humira pen is safe and does not deteriorate while traveling, you must keep it refrigerated (when not in use) or protected from the heat (once open). If you're living in or traveling to places where the outside temperatures are often above 25°C/77°F , you need to use a medical travel cooler .

Here are a few pieces of advice to keep Humira cool and protected from the light in all situations:

  • Use a medical cooler if needed
  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Always keep your Humira pen in the shade
  • Leave it at home if you're going to the beach or other sunny and warm places
  • Never leave your Humira pen in the car
  • Keep it far away from heat sources such as the hot plate, burner, oven, fireplace, barbecue, etc.…

Caution: Humira pens or syringes that have not been stored according to the above instructions aren't safe for use anymore.

How to travel internationally with Humira?

Another big concern for people traveling with chronic diseases is how to travel internationally with their medications . When you live with diseases like diabetes, asthma, chronic migraines, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, or others there’s no way you would leave your home country without your life-saving medications.

But how to cross borders with your meds? What documents do you need to go through airport security and customs checkpoints? Will your travel insurance cover the costs of an unfortunate health-related event while in Thailand?

While Humira is a drug that's sold in most countries around the globe, you still have some paperwork to plan before flying off! Here’s a list of the documentation you might be required to show when traveling internationally with medications like Humira:

  • A doctor’s letter
  • Your medical prescriptions
  • A document from your pharmacy
  • The original containers and labels of the medicine
  • Your medical health card

Can you fly with Humira?

Can you fly with Humira?

Yes, you can fly with your Humira pens and prefilled syringes, as well as all the necessary medical supplies associated with their use (unused and used needles, alcohol swabs, syringes, etc.). Medications are not subject to the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule for liquids, gels, and aerosols. The Transportation Security Administration expressly states so on its website.

When traveling by plane, always pack Humira and other medicines and medical supplies in your carry-on. Checked luggage sometimes gets lost. Besides, the atmosphere and temperature conditions in the hold aren't stable and your medicine could get damaged during the flight.

To speed up and smooth the airport security screening process, you may want to download, print, and fill out a TSA medical notification card , but it’s no obligation.

Be aware that due to pressure changes during take-off and landing, air bubbles can appear in your Humira pens or prefilled syringes. It's no problem, but you must prime your pen or syringes before proceeding to the next injection to get rid of all the air inside. If not, you would be injecting air instead of medicine, which could lead to a lack of medicine and the correlated side effects.

Can Humira go through airport x-ray machines?

Yes. Humira can safely go through airport x-ray machines. But if you’re not comfortable with putting your medication in the x-ray machines, note that you always have the right to request a hand-screening of your luggage instead.

How many Humira pens can fit in the container?

Hi Laura, Humira pens are fully labelled so you can travel with them out of their original box. The original packaging is especially helpful when traveling with vials of medicine or tablets for example. As an extra measure, you can keep your Humira pens in our cooler and take the empty package box on your carry-on. Safe travels! 4AllFamily Customer Care Team

A lot of what I have read states that Humira should be kept in it’s original packaging when traveling. Certainly that’s not possible while using your coolers. What is your recommendation?

Hi Katya, Legally, you can’t travel with someone else’s prescription medications, whether nationally or internationally. You may be asked to show a copy of the medical prescription and it should be with your name on it. However, chances that you get a control are very low, and customs agents are generally compliant if you bring only small amounts of medicine… It depends on your destination country too. Traveling with Humira (adalimumab) requires careful planning and preparation to ensure that your medication remains effective throughout your journey. This guide will address common concerns and provide tips for traveling with Humira, including refrigeration requirements, handling long travel durations, and managing international travel.

Does Humira Need to Be Refrigerated?

Humira should be stored in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. However, it can be kept at room temperature (below 25°C) for up to 14 days. Beyond this period, it should not be used if not refrigerated.

How Long Can Humira Stay Out of the Fridge?

When traveling, Humira can be stored at room temperature for a maximum of 14 days. It is crucial not to freeze Humira, as this can damage the medication. If Humira is not used within 14 days at room temperature, it must be discarded.

Packing and Transporting Humira

  • Keep Humira in its original packaging to avoid issues at customs and security checkpoints.
  • Carry Humira in your carry-on luggage to ensure it stays within the required temperature range and to prevent loss.
  • Use a humira travel case or a small cooler bag with ice packs or gel packs to maintain the correct temperature between 36°F and 46°F (2°C and 8°C).
  • You can also refer to this post How to Choose an Insulated Medication Travel Bag?

Navigating Customs and Security

  • Declare your medication at customs and security. Have a copy of your prescription and a doctor’s note available.
  • Some countries may have specific rules regarding prescription medications; contact the embassy or consulate of your destination country for information.

Managing Medication Schedule

  • Set reminders on your phone or use a medication tracker app to manage your medication schedule, especially when traveling across time zones.
  • Bring extra medication in case of delays or unexpected events.

Dealing with Issues While Traveling

  • If you experience any issues, such as a missed dose or injection problem, seek medical advice immediately. Contact your doctor or a local healthcare provider for assistance.

Traveling Internationally with Humira

  • Verify if the destination country allows the importation of prescription medications.
  • Keep Humira stored at the correct temperature and bring all necessary documentation, including prescriptions and letters from your healthcare provider.

Keeping Humira Cold

  • For extended travel, consider using a portable refrigerator or a specialized cooler case like the DISONCARE Temp Display Travel Insulin Cooler Case or the MEDMODS Insulin Cooler Travel Case. These coolers can maintain the appropriate temperature range for Humira for extended periods.

By following these guidelines, you can travel with Humira confidently, ensuring that your medication remains safe and effective throughout your journey. Remember, it’s always best to consult with your healthcare provider before traveling to discuss your specific needs and any additional precautions you may need to take.

How To Travel with Humira: Tips for Safe and Easy Trips

If you are one of the many people who use Humira to manage a chronic condition like arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis, you may have concerns about how to travel with your medication. Whether you are traveling by air, car, train, or bus, it’s essential to know how to pack, transport, and administer Humira safely and effectively. In this article, we’ll provide you with practical tips and guidelines for traveling with Humira, so you can feel confident and secure on your journey.

Planning Ahead for Humira Travel

Before you embark on your trip, it’s essential to plan ahead and make sure you have everything you need. Here are some things you should do before you travel with Humira:

Check with Your Doctor or Pharmacist: Before you travel, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your trip. They can help you determine how much medication you’ll need and provide you with any necessary prescriptions or medical letters.

Check Travel Regulations and Restrictions: Different countries and modes of transportation have different regulations and restrictions for carrying medication. Research the regulations and restrictions for your destination and mode of transportation, so you can avoid any complications.

Check with Your Insurance Company: Check with your insurance company to make sure your coverage will apply while you are traveling. If you are traveling abroad, you may need to purchase additional travel insurance to cover your medical needs.

Pack Your Medication for Humira Travel

Packing your medication properly is critical to ensure it stays safe and effective during your trip. Here are some things to keep in mind when packing Humira for travel:

Keep Your Medication in Its Original Packaging: Keep your Humira pens or prefilled syringes in their original packaging, so you can avoid any confusion at security checkpoints.

Pack Your Medication in Your Carry-On Bag: Always pack your medication in your carry-on bag, so you have it with you at all times. Don’t pack it in your checked luggage, as it could be lost or damaged.

Use a Medication Cooler If Needed: If you are traveling to a hot or humid destination, or if your medication needs to be kept at a specific temperature, consider using a medication cooler or insulated bag with ice packs to keep it cool.

Bring Backup Supplies: Bring extra Humira pens or prefilled syringes with you in case of loss or damage.

Transporting Your Medication for Humira Travel

Transporting your medication safely is essential to ensure it stays effective and doesn’t get damaged during your trip. Here’s what you need to know about transporting Humira for travel:

Air Travel: If you are traveling by air, be aware that there are specific regulations for carrying medication on a plane. You can bring your Humira pens or prefilled syringes on board with you, but you must inform the TSA officer at the checkpoint. You can also request a private screening if you prefer not to go through the X-ray machine. Keep your medication in your carry-on bag, and make sure it stays at room temperature during the flight.

Car Travel: If you are traveling by car, make sure your Humira pens or prefilled syringes are stored in a cool, dark place, such as a glove compartment or center console. Avoid leaving them in direct sunlight or in a hot car for extended periods. You may also want to bring a travel case or insulated bag with ice packs to keep them cool.

Train or Bus Travel: If you are traveling by train or bus, you can bring your Humira pens or prefilled syringes with you on board. Keep them in your carry-on bag or in a small travel case. Make sure they stay at room temperature and out of direct sunlight.

That’s why I want to help others feel confident and empowered to explore the world without letting their medical conditions hold them back.

So let’s get started!

Table of Contents

Plan Ahead for Your Trip

Before you go on your trip, make sure to think ahead and prepare for any potential challenges related to managing your Humira medication. One important step is to check with your doctor or pharmacist about any regulations or restrictions that may apply to traveling with Humira.

It’s also recommended that you plan ahead by packing extra doses of your medication in case of unexpected delays or lost luggage. Another key aspect of planning ahead is ensuring that you have proper storage for your Humira. It must be kept refrigerated between 36-46°F (2-8°C), so it’s important to pack a small cooler bag with ice packs if you’re going on a long flight or car ride.

Additionally, make sure that you have access to a refrigerator at your destination, such as through requesting one in your hotel room. Lastly, consider the timing of your injections when traveling across time zones. Talk to your doctor about adjusting the schedule leading up to and during travel in order to maintain consistent dosing intervals.

With some careful planning and preparation, traveling with Humira can be manageable and allow for continued treatment without interruption. To ensure the safety of my medication while I’m away from home, packing it properly is crucial. In the next section, I’ll discuss tips for packing my medications securely and efficiently for travel.

Pack Your Medications Properly

When I travel with my Humira medication, I always make sure to pack it properly. This means using an insulated bag to keep the medication at the correct temperature during transit.

It’s important to pack enough medications for the entire trip and to keep them in their original packaging, complete with labels and prescription information. Taking these steps ensures that my medications stay safe and effective throughout my travels.

Use an Insulated Bag

Keep your medication cool and protected during trips with an insulated bag. This is especially important when traveling with Humira, as it needs to be stored at a specific temperature range.

An insulated bag will help maintain the appropriate temperature and protect your medication from extreme heat or cold. When choosing an insulated bag, look for one that is specifically designed for medication storage. Some bags have built-in cooling systems, while others simply provide insulation. Make sure the bag you choose fits your specific Humira packaging and has enough room to accommodate any additional supplies you may need while traveling.

With a properly chosen insulated bag, you can travel confidently knowing that your medication is safe and secure. To pack enough medications for your trip, it’s important to plan ahead and consider factors such as the length of your stay and potential travel delays. Keep in mind that some countries may have restrictions on how much medication can be brought in, so it’s always best to check with customs beforehand.

By packing enough medications and taking precautions such as using an insulated bag, you can enjoy stress-free travels while managing your health condition effectively.

Pack Enough Medications

Make sure you’ve packed enough medication for your journey, like a hiker carrying enough water for their trek through the desert. As someone who regularly travels with Humira, I know firsthand how important it is to pack enough medication.

Not only do I make sure to bring my prescribed dosage, but I also pack extra in case of any unforeseen circumstances such as flight delays or lost luggage. It’s crucial to remember that running out of medication can have serious consequences and potentially lead to a flare-up of symptoms.

So before embarking on your travel adventure, take the time to double-check that you’ve packed enough Humira to last throughout your trip. And speaking of packing, keep reading for tips on how to properly store your medications while traveling.

Keep Your Medications in Their Original Packaging

To ensure the safety and effectiveness of your medication, it’s best to leave them in their original packaging while on your journey. This means keeping the Humira pens or prefilled syringes in the boxes they were dispensed in, along with any inserts that came with them.

By doing so, you can be sure that you have all the necessary information about dosage, administration, and side effects right at your fingertips. Keeping medications in their original packaging also helps prevent mix-ups and confusion.

When traveling, it’s easy to misplace items or accidentally switch medications with someone else’s. But by keeping everything together in its proper packaging, you can avoid any potential mishaps and stay organized throughout your trip.

Now that we know how important it is to keep our medications in their original packaging, let’s talk about how to store them correctly during travel.

Store Your Medications Correctly

Storing your meds properly is crucial for their effectiveness and safety, so don’t mess around with it. When it comes to Humira, you should always store the medication in a refrigerator between 36°F and 46°F. Do not freeze the medication, as this can damage its effectiveness.

If you’re traveling with Humira and do not have access to a refrigerator, you may store the medication at room temperature (68°F to 77°F) for up to 14 days. But be sure to throw away any unused medication after those two weeks.

Another important aspect of storing your Humira is keeping it out of direct sunlight or heat sources like radiators or car dashboards. This can cause the medication to spoil or lose potency quickly. So if you’re on a road trip during hot summer months, make sure that your Humira is stored in a cooler bag with ice packs, just like food items.

Remember that taking proper care of your medications while traveling will ensure their efficacy and protect your health. Now that you know how to store your Humira correctly during travel, let’s move on to the next step: knowing how to administer your medication without any mishaps!

Know How to Administer Your Medication

You’ll love knowing how to easily administer your medication without any mishaps! Administering Humira is a simple process, but it’s important to do it correctly.

First, make sure you have everything you need: a prefilled syringe or auto-injector, an alcohol wipe, and a sharps container. It’s also helpful to have someone with you who can assist if necessary.

Once you have all the necessary supplies, it’s time to administer the medication. Here are some important steps to follow:

  • Clean the injection site with an alcohol wipe and let it dry.
  • Remove the cap from the syringe or auto-injector.
  • Pinch the skin at the injection site.
  • Insert the needle at a 45-degree angle (or as directed by your healthcare provider).
  • Press down on the plunger or button to inject the medication.
  • Withdraw the needle and dispose of it in a sharps container.

It’s important to rotate injection sites and not inject into areas that are red, swollen, or tender.

Now that you know how to properly administer your Humira medication, you can feel confident doing so during your travels.

In our next section, we’ll discuss tips for traveling internationally with Humira!

Traveling Internationally with Humira

If you’re planning a trip abroad and need to take your medication with you, traveling with Humira may seem daunting at first. However, with proper preparation and knowledge, it can be a smooth process.

The first step is to check if the country you’re visiting allows the importation of prescription medications. You can do this by contacting the embassy or consulate of the destination country.

Once you’ve confirmed that bringing Humira into the country is allowed, make sure to pack enough medication for the entire trip. It’s also a good idea to bring extra in case of unexpected delays or loss of medication.

Keep in mind that Humira needs to be stored at room temperature between 36°F-46°F (2°C-8°C). If your travel plans involve extreme temperatures or long periods without access to refrigeration, consider using an insulated bag with ice packs.

Finally, don’t forget to bring all necessary documentation related to your medication such as prescriptions and letters from your healthcare provider. It’s also recommended to keep your medication in its original packaging along with any labels or instructions.

By following these tips, traveling internationally with Humira can be stress-free and allow you to enjoy your trip worry-free.

Preparing for international travel involves more than just packing essentials; it also requires preparing for unexpected issues that may arise during travel. In the next section, we’ll discuss how to handle these situations while ensuring that your medication remains safe and effective.

Handling Unexpected Issues

You may encounter unexpected issues while traveling internationally with your medication, but don’t worry – there are ways to handle these situations and ensure the safety and effectiveness of your treatment.

One common issue is running out of Humira during your trip. To avoid this, make sure to pack extra doses in case of any delays or lost luggage. You can also contact your doctor or insurance company beforehand to arrange for a backup supply in case of emergencies.

Another issue you may face is dealing with customs and security at airports. It’s important to have all necessary documentation for your medication, such as a letter from your doctor explaining why you need it and a prescription label on the box. Be prepared for additional screening and allow extra time for this process. If you have any concerns about traveling with Humira, consult with your doctor or pharmacist before leaving.

Overall, it’s important to be proactive and plan ahead when traveling with Humira. This will help reduce stress and ensure that you receive proper treatment while away from home. If you do encounter any unexpected issues, don’t hesitate to seek assistance from local medical professionals or speak with a representative from your insurance company.

As you prepare for international travel with Humira, it’s natural to have some common concerns and questions about how best to manage the logistics of taking your medication abroad. One thing many people wonder about is how best to store their medication during long flights or extended periods without refrigeration.

Let’s explore some tips and tricks for managing these challenges in the next section.

Common Concerns and Questions

In this section, we’ll tackle some common worries and queries you may have about taking your medication with you on an overseas trip.

One of the most frequently asked questions is whether or not Humira needs to be refrigerated while traveling. The answer is no, as long as it’s kept at room temperature (below 77°F) for up to 14 days. If your travels exceed that time frame, it’s best to speak with your doctor or pharmacist about how to properly store your medication.

Another concern travelers have is going through airport security with their Humira supplies. It’s important to keep all medications in their original packaging and bring a copy of the prescription or a letter from your doctor explaining why you need the medication. TSA allows passengers to bring medically necessary liquids over 3.4 ounces in a carry-on bag, but they must be screened separately and declared at the checkpoint.

Lastly, some people worry about what will happen if they run out of Humira while abroad. In case of an emergency, it’s recommended to locate a nearby medical facility that can provide necessary treatment or refill prescriptions if needed. You can also contact AbbVie Patient Assistance Foundation for assistance with obtaining medication while away from home.

With these concerns addressed, you can travel confidently knowing that you’re prepared and equipped to handle any situations that may arise during your trip – including enjoying all the activities and experiences without worrying about managing your medication routine!

Enjoying Your Trip with Confidence

Now that you’ve addressed your concerns, it’s time to fully enjoy your trip with the confidence and peace of mind knowing that you have everything under control. Here are some tips to help you make the most out of your travels while taking Humira:

Plan ahead: Before leaving for your trip, make sure to pack extra supplies of Humira in case of any unforeseen circumstances. It’s also important to research local healthcare facilities at your destination just in case you need medical attention during your stay.

Stay organized: Keep all of your medication and supplies in one place for easy access. This can be done by using a pill organizer or a designated travel bag for all of your Humira-related items. It’s also a good idea to carry a copy of your prescription and doctor’s note in case airport security or customs officers require them.

Don’t let it hold you back: While traveling with Humira may seem daunting, don’t let it stop you from experiencing new places and adventures. With proper planning and organization, there’s no reason why Humira should interfere with enjoying all that life has to offer.

Traveling with medication can seem overwhelming, but with these simple tips, you can confidently embark on new adventures without any added stress or worry.

Remember to plan ahead, stay organized, and don’t let anything hold you back from living life to the fullest!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can i bring my humira medication on a plane.

Flying with Humira is easy as carrying a feather in your pocket. I’ve always been able to bring my Humira medication on a plane without any issues. Before heading to the airport, I make sure to pack my medication in its original packaging and bring along a copy of my prescription, just in case.

It’s also helpful to check with the airline beforehand for any specific rules or regulations they may have regarding medication storage or transportation. With these simple steps, traveling with Humira has never been more effortless. So go ahead and book that flight – your medication won’t hold you back from exploring the world!

What should I do if I forget to pack my Humira medication?

If I forget to pack my Humira medication while traveling, it can be a real headache. One of the first things I do is try to find a local pharmacy that carries my medication.

If that’s not possible, I reach out to my healthcare provider for advice on how to proceed. In some cases, they may be able to arrange for a replacement dose or suggest an alternative treatment option until I can get back home and retrieve my medication.

It’s important not to skip any doses of Humira as this can impact its effectiveness and potentially lead to negative health outcomes. So, while forgetting your medication isn’t ideal, it doesn’t have to derail your trip entirely if you take action and seek guidance from your healthcare team.

How do I dispose of used Humira needles while traveling?

When traveling with Humira, it’s important to properly dispose of used needles to prevent injury and contamination.

Did you know that approximately 9 million tons of medical waste is generated each year in the United States alone? That’s a staggering amount!

To ensure safe disposal, bring a sharps container with you on your travels. Once you’ve used a needle, place it in the container and seal it up until you can properly dispose of it at a designated location.

It may require a little extra effort, but taking care of your health and the environment is worth it.

Can I store my Humira medication in a hotel room fridge or should I bring a portable cooler?

When it comes to storing my Humira medication while traveling, I always opt for a portable cooler.

While some hotel room fridges may be able to maintain the necessary temperature range of 36-46 degrees Fahrenheit, I prefer not to take any chances with something as important as my medication.

Plus, having a portable cooler allows me the freedom to bring my medication with me wherever I go without worrying about access to a fridge. It’s also helpful when flying or taking long road trips where I may not have access to a fridge at all times.

Overall, bringing a portable cooler gives me peace of mind and ensures that my Humira stays safe and effective throughout my travels.

Are there any travel restrictions for Humira users?

As a Humira user, it’s important to be aware of any travel restrictions that may affect your medication.

While there are no specific restrictions on traveling with Humira, it’s always a good idea to check with your airline and destination country for any regulations regarding the transportation of prescription medications.

Additionally, it’s important to plan ahead and ensure you have enough medication for the duration of your trip, as well as proper storage options such as a portable cooler or hotel room fridge.

By staying informed and prepared, you can enjoy the freedom of travel while still managing your health needs.

In conclusion, traveling with Humira requires careful planning and preparation. It’s crucial to pack your medications properly and store them in a safe place during transit. Knowing how to administer your medication is also critical, so make sure you’re comfortable with the process before embarking on your journey.

Remember that unexpected issues can arise, such as lost or delayed baggage or changes in temperature that could affect the efficacy of your medication. It’s essential to have a backup plan and communicate any concerns with your healthcare provider.

As the famous adage goes, “better safe than sorry.” Don’t let the fear of traveling with Humira stop you from exploring new destinations. With proper planning and precautions, you can enjoy your trip with confidence and peace of mind, knowing that you have everything under control.

So go ahead, book that dream vacation and experience all the wonders this world has to offer!

Air travel with Humira or Enbrel

I’ll be visiting Arizona next week during the time when I’ll need to take Humira, so, of course, one of the first things I’ll have to think about when packing is how I’m transporting it. This will be the second time I’m taking Humira or Enbrel on a plane, so it doesn’t feel like that big of a deal (no bigger than the whole TSA fiasco normally is).

The first time, though, I was very confused about what I would have to do bring my Humira through the airport (or my sister her Enbrel). This post contains  everything  you might want to know about flying with Humira or Enbrel. To find the key points, look for the  bolded words  or click a link below.

Edit: This is my most popular post, but I know it can be a little long. Check out this list of the important points !

Keeping the medication the right temperature

Humira or Enbrel and airport x-ray machines

Injectable medication and the TSA screening process

What about documentation?

I’m not a medical professional, an employee of the maker of either Humira or Enbrel, or an employee of the TSA. The information contained here is information obtained from my own experience, from the drug makers’ websites, and from the TSA website. As always, if you have questions, contact a healthcare professional.

Keeping Humira or Enbrel the right temperature

If you’re faced with traveling with a biologic the first thing you need to think about is what temperature it will be. If kept at or below 77 degrees Fahrenheit (and out of the light), both Humira and Enbrel can be kept unrefrigerated for up to 14 days. It’s not ideal storage, but both the manufacturers consider it perfectly acceptable. This was fine for me last time I flew, because I was traveling between Chicago and Florida in the winter. No chance of it overheating there.

This time, though, I’m traveling between Chicago and Phoenix in the middle of summer. Overheating could definitely be a problem. The good news is, the makers of both Humira and Enbrel offer free travel kits that contain freezer packs and storage space for you medicine to make traveling easier. Make sure to order your travel kit in advance , as they can take some time to arrive.

Humira’s travel kit is available through the Humira Complete program, and Enbrel’s travel pack is available through Enbrel Support . Especially with Humira, you have to sign up for their program to receive a call from your nurse ambassador, who can then help you order the travel kit, so allow time. Enbrel’s process looks more straightforward, although I’ve never done it myself.

The Humira travel pack comes with a carry case, instructions, freezer packs, and a strap for easy carrying.

(Also, remember to freeze the freezer packs prior to travel.   And think about how it will be stored at your destination. For long flights, ask the staff to put your medication in their fridge, and don’t forget it!)

Definitely travel with your Humira or Enbrel as a carry-on , because you can’t be sure what conditions it will be subjected to as checked baggage. Also, if your checked baggage is lost, you’ll be without important medication (important thousand-dollar  medication).

The biggest question I had when I traveled by plane with Humira for the first time was: Can Humira go through the x-ray screener? It took me far too long to find the answer, but the makers of Humira say that Humira is able to go through the x-ray machine . This support page contains a video with more information.

Unfortunately, users of Enbrel don’t get an answer that is quite so straightforward. I was unable to find the answer to the question directly from Amgen, so we had to make the decision ourselves. We made the personal decision to send my sister’s Enbrel through the x-ray scanner due to:

1. The overwhelming number of people in forums and blogs saying that they noticed no ill effects after their Enbrel went through the x-ray scanner.

2. The fact that Humira is able to go through the scanner. The two are not the same medication, but their storage requirements are similar.

3. The difficulty involved with keeping the medication from being x-ray scanned. Passengers who forego x-ray examination are subject to additional screening.

Indeed, my sister noticed no problems after using the Enbrel that went through the x-ray scanner. However, this was the decision we came to after much discussion and consideration of the outcomes. It’s really best to talk to your healthcare professional for additional advice. (This was not an option for us, because my sister didn’t think about this being a problem until we were on the way to the airport.) And if any of this makes you uncomfortable, you can always request hand-screening for any of your belongings, to stay on the safe side.

(Why this may be a concern: Light is known to promote degradation of the molecules that make Humira and Enbrel work, so a worry may be that x-rays will have a similar effect. From what I understand, the makers of Enbrel have not tested the effect of x-rays on Enbrel, so this is why consulting your healthcare professional is important if you’re unsure what to do.)

Injectable medication and the screening process

The TSA makes different allowances for medications, so it doesn’t have to follow their 3-1-1 liquids, gels, and aerosols rule. The freezer packs needed to keep the medication at the right temperature are also exempt.

When I flew with Humira, my mom and I (randomly) had TSA precheck (to get it every time, you have to apply). This meant we were pre-approved to go through an abbreviated screening process. We didn’t have to remove our shoes or take liquids, laptops, and other things out of our carry-ons, like would normally be done. This made it incredibly easy to travel with the medications. My mom had my sister’s medication in her bag, and I had my medication in my own, and because of TSA precheck we were able to just leave the medication in the bags and send them through the scanner . No problems at all. The security officers didn’t even mention it.

When it comes to going through the standard security, the TSA requests that you take the medication out and declare it , but this may not be necessary in most cases. My family has been traveling with medically necessary aerosols (read: inhalers) for years, and usually, putting the medication in the tray beside your other belongings is enough. In the event that the officers need to know more, they will tell you. It may be visually inspecting the equipment or swabbing the medication containers for traces of dangerous materials.

If you have decided not to send your medication through the scanner, of course, you can request that the medication be examined by hand at this point.

I know a lot of sites and forums, including sites by the makers of the medication, advise bringing copies of prescriptions and doctor’s orders with your medication, but I’ve found no indication from the TSA that this is necessary (so if you don’t have documentation, don’t panic). It may make the process easier, and they do advise that medications are, at the very least, labeled for easy identification. For me, keeping the Humira syringe in its box means keeping the prescription right with it. Also, if you are traveling internationally, documentation requirements may be different.

However, having the doctor’s note does not exempt you from further examination if the security officers feel that it’s needed. This is because, as they explain here , anyone with a doctor’s note would be able to smuggle dangerous materials onto a plane. Still, if you’re keen on hitting as few snags as possible, you can definitely present medical documentation to make the process smoother. The TSA also provides a printable medical notification card that you can present to security officers at the airport.

Even if you or your medication are selected for additional screening, there are a number of options to make sure you’re the most comfortable, including options that allow you to sit, if that is necessary for you. When it comes to mobility issues, clearly identifying your needs is important. My sister had to go through airport security with a cane one time, and when she notified the security officers of this, they provided her with a cane she could use when going through the detector so that she didn’t set it off. And of course, her cane was subjected to further screening, since it couldn’t be scanned traditionally.

I hope this was able to answer any pressing questions you had about traveling with Enbrel or Humira. If I didn’t cover something you’d like to know, please ask about it in the comments!

My post about staying comfortable when standing might also give you important things to consider during your travels. I’m also working on an upcoming article about important things for packing . Sign up for the email list  to get it delivered straight to your email!

I’m going to Boston from st. Louis I have to take 3 Humira pens I have the travel bags, but my question is this, if I have the pens between the freezer packs when I get to Boston to my sister’s house and put them in the refrigerator, is it OK then to use all 3 even with one going 3 weeks out?? I keep reading even if you put in the refrigerator you only have 14 days to use them from the time you took them out of the refrigerator. I thought if they were with freezer packs it would be like being in the refrigerator so you don’t have to worry about 14 days any more??? I leave in July any one please advise.

Usually you will only be prescribed Humira, also known as adalimumab, if other treatments have failed to get your condition under control. You take Humira by self-injecting it under the skin one time every two weeks.

The good news is that despite its temperature requirements, Humira therapy offers enough flexibility that it usually won’t interfere with your travels. In fact, if it keeps your symptoms under control, the medication might be just what you need in order to get on the road and enjoy yourself.

Travelling With Humira – What You Should Know?

When you’re planning a trip, you might worry about how to keep up with your Humira regimen given that the medication is usually kept refrigerated.

For most trips, you don’t have to stress about keeping on track with Humira, as the medication can be stored at room temperature for up to 14 days.

Fortunately, Humira can be safely kept at room temperature for a full two weeks. That means that for most trips, you don’t have to stress too much about your medication. In a video on the Humira site, AbbVie advises the following:

  • Pack only the amount of the medication that you will need while away.
  • Record the date when you first remove it from the refrigerator. The carton and the dose tray provide a place to write this information.
  • Store Humira in your carry-on bag rather than your checked baggage. (The X-ray machine for security screening won’t harm your Humira.)
  • When you arrive at your destination, store your Humira in the refrigerator if possible. If you can’t, then store it at room temperature away from direct sunlight.
  • If you don’t use your Humira within 14 days of when it was taken out of the refrigerator, then discard it.

Humira On the Go Kit

Times change, and so does terminology. Humira has been available in the U.S. for many years — it received FDA approval in 2002 — and its marketing has varied in that time. In a web search, you may run across references to an “On the Go Kit” was offered to Humira patients in years past. This was apparently identical or very similar to the travel case offered today. Humira links referencing the On the Go Kit now redirect to other Humira patient education pages.

Humira Temperature – How Long Is It Good At Room Temperature?

In general, Humira should be kept in a refrigerator at between 36 degrees and 46 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees to 8 degrees Celsius). It should be stored in its original container and kept away from light until it’s time to inject it.

This screenshot shows an outdated link to the Humira On the Go Kit. Today Humira offers a similar, or possibly identical, travel kit.

However, Humira can be maintained at room temperature, meaning 47 Fahrenheit degrees to 77 Fahrenheit, for a full 14 days. That’s equivalent to 8 degrees to 25 degrees Celsius. After Humira has reached room temperature, it must be used within 14 days, even if it is put back in the refrigerator. If it is not used within 14 days, it can no longer be used; call your pharmacist to find out how to get more Humira.

If Humira has been frozen, it can no longer be used.

Another note about Humira and temperature: For comfort, many people let the medication room to room temperature just before injecting it. This means taking the medication out of the refrigerator 15 to 30 minutes before using it. If you do this, be sure not to take off the cap or cover while waiting for the Humira to warm up. Let the medication sit and do not use any other method to heat it, such as running warm water over it.

Humira Pen Travel Storage

Humira comes in two forms: a “pen” or  pre-filled syringe. A variation known as Humira Citrate-free, which has the same active ingredient but causes less pain upon injection, is also available as a pen or pre-filled syringe. Storage and travel information are the same for all versions.

More information on the pen and pre-filled syringe is available here .

This often leads to inflammation. HUMIRA is a medication called a TNF blocker. It works by binding to TNF molecules and blocking them from attaching to and making cells behave in a way which leads to effects on health. In this way, HUMIRA helps reduce the damaging effects of excess TNF.

Long-term Travelling with Humira

One unique aspect of our trip has been figuring out how to travel long term while still taking Humira to manage my Crohn's disease. Humira is an injection that I take bi-weekly and it needs to be stored between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius. The pre-filled injection pens aren't tiny so even if it didn't need to be refrigerated it would not be feasible to carry a year's supply. I found a few other blogs discussing travelling with Humira but no one for as long as we were planning. Neither my doctors or Abbvie Care (the drug company) had done anything like this before - I had to figure this one out on my own.

The problem can be broken down into two main components: keeping Humira cold while travelling and re-supplying on the go

Getting more Humira along the way was definitely the bigger unknown before we left home. I knew from research that Humira is an international product but country by country information was hard to confirm. I had no idea if it was possible or how hard it would be to purchase Humira in foreign countries.

My backup plan was having Humira shipped from Canada to wherever we happened to be. I spent over an hour on the phone with FedEx understanding how this would work. Essentially, you have to combine next day priority air shipping with cold chain packaging. If the package gets held up clearing customs then FedEx can put it in a fridge. I bought some cold chain shipping boxes rated for 48 hours which we left with family in Canada and practised filling out the FedEx shipping/import forms for a few countries in South America, our first destination.

With only a loose plan I left Canada with 4 doses in my travel cooler determined to figure it out on the road and make it work.

The first time I successfully refilled my prescription in Santiago was a huge relief that this could actually work

I was able to re-supply throughout our trip without too much hassle and I never had to use my backup plan. Here is a list of countries where I was able to purchase Humira, the stars mean I had to see a doctor and get a local prescription. The pharmacy was always able to direct me to the best place to see a doctor. Travel clinics are another good resource and I've used the directory at istm.org a few times.

The medicine was available in Colombia but couldn't ship in time before our flight out. EU countries will accept prescriptions from other EU countries so try and get a few refills on the prescription if you see a doctor. I tried and it seems Humira is not available in Bolivia, Vietnam or Thailand (the latter resulted in a loop back to Malaysia). I also refilled the two times we returned to Canada. It can take a few days for a pharmacy to order Humira so try not to leave it until the last moment.

My process for getting Humira was to start at the largest pharmacy within a reasonable distance from our accommodation, preferably in a major city and better if it's near a hospital. I didn't have a copy of my Canadian prescription but instead brought the pharmacy receipt from my last refill in Canada. I think this worked better since it is very clearly written and actually looks more official than doctor handwriting. I always show the paper to the pharmacist immediately since it's what they are used to even if it's not a local prescription. It was pretty common to be redirected to another larger pharmacy but I always pressed to see if they could order it. Sometimes it seemed to depend on the mood of the pharmacist whether they helped or not but after a few places I've always found someone willing. Humira is not a narcotic or restricted substance, it serves a specific medical purpose and it isn't cheap so people tend to take you seriously and try to help.

Japan does it better. Not only does their pen look the coolest but it injects 3 times faster and I didn't feel the needle at all

Travelling with Humira has been more widely discussed online so I am just going to explain how I've been doing it and not discuss alternatives. The most important thing you'll need is a good cooler preferably one that can hold below 8 degrees for 24 hours. This gives you more than enough time to get to your destination and not be stressed out about the temperature of your meds.

The cooler I had looked like this - I liked that it was a hard case and that it had a built-in thermometer. Unfortunately it is no longer available. I currently use this All4Family cooler with a normal thermometer inside for checking on the temp.

I could fit a maximum of 4 doses in my cooler but I generally prefered to travel with 3 or less which allowed me to fit both ice packs inside and get a full 24 hours before I needed access to a fridge. Abbvie loosened the requirements a few years back and Humira is okay to be stored at room temperature for 14 days. I try to be in this situation as much as possible to make things easier, it is also a good way to practise with lower stakes. The more experience you have with your cooler the more confident you will be travelling with your medicine. Knowing the dynamics of your cooler, how long you have from each temperature and what the cold packs look like at various points is very useful in case your thermometer breaks (it happened to me). Definitely test your setup at home before leaving but remember this will be a best case scenario.

It is important to plan ahead, think about the method of travel and the full door to door travel time. Air planes and trains are usually air conditioned while buses are not. I know hot air rises but I've found the overhead compartments are usually cooler for a number of reasons mainly the shade from direct sunlight and it is often where the cold air comes from. Most places have ice if you need a boost mid-travel and I carry a few zip lock bags in case. Ice is a better word to use than freezer in most countries where english is not the main language - I once bought a popsicle in China because it was easier and I was in a hurry.

I always take my Humira cooler out of my backpack for airport security and send it through the scanner on it's own. It makes it super clear that you're not hiding it and I feel like it gives me back some control of the situation by putting it out there. Since making this change I've been stopped a lot less often going through security. If the agent does want to have a look then at least they can do so without tearing through the rest of my stuff. I've never had any issues, although a few times an agent went to shake it but I was watching and spoke up first.

Unfortunately it's not necessarily always smooth sailing after arrival. A shocking number of fridges in the world are not actually below 8 degrees (looking at you Europe...) and hostel fridges are often left open. To deal with this when I arrive at a new place I leave one ice pack in the cooler and start freezing the other one. I'll check on the fridge a few hours later and if it looks bad I'll alternate the ice packs once a day. A lot of fridges are below 2 degrees which while out of the range doesn't freeze Humira. It's pretty common for room fridges to be unplugged on arrival, the first time this freaked me out but they cool down fast, even the top freezer part to re-freeze the cold packs. I've yet to find a place that didn't accommodate my need for a fridge and medicine is pretty universally understood as important. I would recommend always accompanying your meds to the fridge since you never know - a 5 star hotel's fridge that I didn't check was only 13 degrees, luckily I was using the dose soon.

If you're returning to a place then leaving your Humira behind can be a good idea. I left my cooler with our tour company before heading into the Amazon for 6 days and again with the car rental agency in Namibia before our road trip.

Travelling with Humira is totally doable and with a bit of practise not a big deal. Do your best, don't stress out and definitely don't let it be an excuse not to travel!

I'll leave you with a few more anecdotes from my experience:

  • I had to run up a hill with 400 stairs to get to our hotel (and a fridge) when my ice pack was almost out
  • Re-froze a cold pack in a corner store ice cream fridge, everywhere seems to have ice cream and beer!
  • Travelled for over 48 hours without a fridge from Uyuni Bolivia to Atacama Chile - luckily it was cold out
  • Took my meds on a 24 hour overnight bus from El Chalten to El Bolson
  • Survived over 18 hours of international travel from Buenos Aires to Dubrovnik Croatia
  • Threw a huge bag of ice in a broken hotel fridge to keep it cold

With cvs cost-cutting move, abbvie's humira dam begins to crack.

Katherine Davis

She joined Crain’s in 2021 from the American City Business Journals, where she reported on startups and venture capital for the Chicago Business Journal and Chicago Inno.

Abbvie's Humira pen

Pharmaceutical giant AbbVie managed to hang on to most of the immunosuppressive drug market in the first year its multiuse drug Humira faced biosimilar competition, but the tide appears to be turning as CVS' pharmacy benefit manager replaces Humira on its formulary list.

A new report from investment banking advisory firm Evercore ISI shows Humira is losing its hold on the market for the immunosuppressive drug adalimumab (for which Humira is a brand name) as lower-cost Humira biosimilars accounted for 36% of all new U.S. adalimumab prescriptions in the week ending April 5, up from just 5% the week before.

The swift development stems from changes CVS Health, the vertically integrated pharmacy, health care and insurance company, made to its pharmacy benefit manager, or PBM, formulary, which plays a significant role in which drugs are available to many Americans.

As of April 1, CVS’ Caremark unit replaced Humira with biosimilar Hyrimoz on its major national commercial template formularies, which covers around 30 million patients. In just a week, the change led to an “explosion” of new Hyrimoz prescriptions, Evercore ISI analysts wrote in the April 15 report.

New Hyrimoz prescriptions grew from just 643 in the week ending March 29 to nearly 8,300 during the first week of April, accounting for about 93% of all new Humira biosimilar prescriptions.

“We expect the faster adoption to continue,” the analysts wrote.

Humira and its competitors treat rheumatoid arthritis, plaque psoriasis and other conditions.

Woonsocket, R.I.-based CVS is giving preferential treatment to Hyrimoz, in part, because it co-owns the drug. Last year, CVS Health created Cordavis, a wholly owned subsidiary that works directly with manufacturers to commercialize and co-produce biosimilar medications. Hyrimoz is among the first biosimilars Cordavis is producing in partnership with Novartis-owned Sandoz.

CVS Health declined to comment on Humira and AbbVie to Crain’s but said the decision to offer more biosimilar prescriptions broadly is intended to lower costs and improve clinical outcomes.

“Cordavis is manufacturing low-list price biosimilars at scale and delivering what the marketplace needs,” the company said.

An AbbVie spokesperson told Crain’s in a statement the formulary change at CVS was “anticipated” and disclosed in earnings projections.

“Despite the change with the CVS template formularies, Humira remains widely available for patients alongside other adalimumab treatment options,” AbbVie said.

The recent formulary changes at CVS Health comes more than a year since the first Humira biosimilar hit the market. Humira, which once represented as much as 30% of AbbVie’s revenue, now faces nine biosimilars as of April, and two others are currently being developed.

While Humira-related revenues slipped in the first year of biosimilar competition, Humira held on to 96% of the market through February 2024, according to a recent Samsung Bioepis report.

But now, with other PBMs expected to make similar changes to drug formularies, more pain is likely ahead for North Chicago-based AbbVie. As one of the first blockbuster biosimilar drugs that’s been funneled to patients through the PBM industry, changes like the one at CVS Caremark will have big ramifications on the drugs’ sales going forward.

“In time, you'll see more and more of this,” says Morningstar analyst Damien Conover. “(PBMs) are sort of dictating where the market share goes.”

Lowering costs

While biosimilar competition is a threat to the bottom line of any drug manufacturer, generic versions of drugs largely help reduce drug and health care costs for payors and patients, research shows. More competition forces pharmaceutical companies to lower prices, which reduces health care spending and, in some cases, expands the availability of a drug to more patients.

If all adalimumab patients switched to biosimilars, the U.S. health care system would save up to $6 billion, according to an analysis from IQVIA, a health care data and research firm.

Despite the market share erosion appearing now, AbbVie managed to hold onto its grip of the market in the first year of biosimilar competition by effectively lowering the price of Humira by offering PBMs higher “rebates,” a discount that PBMs often pass along to insurance plans and patients, Conover says. The strategy allowed Humira to remain the top choice of adalimumab drugs, but the rebates led to slumping Humira revenue as AbbVie cut the drug’s price.

AbbVie declined to comment on its rebate strategy, but Humira sales declined 32% to $14.4 billion in 2023 as competitor drugs entered the market, U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission filings show. And overall, AbbVie’s annual revenue was down 6% to $54 billion.

Conover estimates Humira will bring in $9.6 billion in revenue this year, which is largely in line with the company’s revenue projections, but will later sag to about $5.7 billion in 2026.

“About half of the sales in 2024 will be gone by 2026,” he says.

Despite persisting Humira declines, industry analysts and observers have largely concluded that AbbVie successfully navigated this period by boosting sales of its other drugs, like plaque psoriasis medication Skyrizi and rheumatoid arthritis drug Rinvoq, and acquiring new companies with promising therapies in development stages.

“They've got next-generation drugs that are really ramping very, very well, and really starting to take share from Humira,” Conover says.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

Update: Iran launched drone attacks against Israel on Saturday. Read CBS News'  latest coverage here .

Tel Aviv  — Israel is bracing for a worst-case scenario that U.S. officials believe could materialize within just hours — the possibility of a direct attack on Israeli soil by Iran in retaliation for a strike almost two weeks ago that killed seven Iranian military officers. Iran has vowed to take revenge for Israel killing its commanders, who were hit by an April 1 strike on the Iranian embassy in Syria's capital.

Two U.S. officials told CBS News that a major Iranian attack against Israel was expected as soon as Friday, possibly to include more than 100 drones and dozens of missiles aimed at military targets inside the country. Sources have told CBS News the retaliation could include attacks carried out both by Iranian forces, and proxy groups around the region that it has been funneling additional arms to for weeks.

The officials said it would be challenging for the Israelis to defend against an attack of that magnitude, and while they held out the possibility that the Iranians could opt for a smaller-scale attack to avoid a dramatic escalation, their retaliation was believed to be imminent.

Asked Friday how imminent he believes an attack is, President Biden responded, "I don't want to get into secure information, but my expectation is sooner than later." The president urged Iran not to move forward, saying his message to Tehran was: "Don't."

Tehran has not indicated publicly how or when it will return fire, so it's unclear how far Iran's leaders will go. If they decide to carry out a direct attack on Israel, there's fear it could blow Israel's ongoing war against Iranian ally Hamas up into a much wider regional conflict.

With the Iranian retaliation expected at any time, the U.S. State Department on Thursday warned Americans in Israel not to travel outside major cities, which are better protected from incoming rocket fire by the country's Iron Dome missile defense system. The latest guidance noted that travel by U.S. government employees in Israel could be further restricted with little notice as things develop in the tinderbox region.

"Whoever harms us, we will harm them," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Thursday as he visited troops at an Israel Defense Forces airbase. "We are prepared … both defensively and offensively."

Iran-Burning Flags Of The U.S. And Israel

On Saturday, all U.S. embassies in the Middle East were put on high alert and required to hold emergency action committee meetings. Diplomats in Lebanon and Israel were specifically told not to travel to certain areas within those countries.

Sima Shine, a security expert and former official with Israel's national intelligence agency Mossad, told CBS News it was a dangerous moment for the region, and the "most worried" she has been. She said anxiety over an all-out war was likely just as high "on both sides, in Israel and in Iran."

If Iran does choose to strike Israel directly, it could involve a complex missile and drone attack similar to the one Iranian forces launched against a Saudi oil facility in 2019 .

"They will try to do it on the military or some military asset," Shine predicted. "But the question will be the damage. If there would be many injured people, killed or injured … I think it has the potential for a huge escalation."

Iran- International Jerusalem Day Rally In Tehran

Shine stressed, however, that she still believes neither side actually wants a regional conflict.

U.S. "really trying to avoid war"

The U.S. sent a senior general to Israel this week to coordinate with the close American ally on any response it might make to an Iranian attack. Speaking Friday on "CBS Mornings," America's top military officer said, "we're really trying to avoid war."

"This is part of the dialogue that I have with my counterparts within the region, to include the Israeli chief of defense, who I talked to yesterday," said Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr., adding that the U.S. military was "doing things not only to prevent a war, but at the same time, one of my primary things is to make sure all the forces in the region are protected."

"My role, as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, is to plan and prepare," Brown said. "That's one thing we do very well."

Brown's Israeli counterpart, Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, "completed a comprehensive situational assessment on the readiness of the IDF for all scenarios," Israel's military said Friday.

"The IDF is very strongly prepared, both offensively and defensively, against any threat," Halevi was quoted as saying in the statement. "The IDF continues to monitor closely what is happening in Iran and different arenas, constantly preparing to deal with existing and potential threats in coordination with the United States Armed Forces."

The IDF said the visiting U.S. general, Central Command chief Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, was taking part in the IDF's situational assessment.

The dilemma for Iran, said Israeli expert Shine, is to figure out how to deliver its promised response to Israel's attack in Syria, but in a way that does not lead to further escalation. Likewise, Shine said Israel could choose to show restraint when it responds to whatever Iran eventually does.

If either side gets the balance wrong, the consequences for the region, and even the world, could be dire.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION  ABOUT HUMIRA ®  (adalimumab) 1

What is the most important information i should know about humira.

You should discuss the potential benefits and risks of HUMIRA with your doctor. HUMIRA is a TNF blocker medicine that can lower the ability of your immune system to fight infections. You should not start taking HUMIRA if you have any kind of infection unless your doctor says it is okay.

  • Serious infections have happened in people taking HUMIRA. These serious infections include tuberculosis (TB) and infections caused by viruses, fungi, or bacteria that have spread throughout the body. Some people have died from these infections.  Your doctor should test you for TB before starting HUMIRA, and check you closely for signs and symptoms of TB during treatment with HUMIRA, even if your TB test was negative. If your doctor feels you are at risk, you may be treated with medicine for TB.
  • Cancer.  For children and adults taking TNF blockers, including HUMIRA, the chance of getting lymphoma or other cancers may increase. There have been cases of unusual cancers in children, teenagers, and young adults using TNF blockers. Some people have developed a rare type of cancer called hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma. This type of cancer often results in death. If using TNF blockers including HUMIRA, your chance of getting two types of skin cancer (basal cell and squamous cell) may increase. These types are generally not life-threatening if treated; tell your doctor if you have a bump or open sore that doesn’t heal.

What should I tell my doctor BEFORE starting HUMIRA?

Tell your doctor about all of your health conditions , including if you:

  • Have an infection, are being treated for infection, or have symptoms of an infection

  • Live or have lived in an area (such as the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys) where there is an increased risk for getting certain kinds of fungal infections, such as histoplasmosis, coccidioidomycosis, or blastomycosis. These infections may happen or become more severe if you use HUMIRA. Ask your doctor if you are unsure if you have lived in these areas
  • Have or have had hepatitis B
  • Are scheduled for major surgery
  • Have or have had cancer
  • Have numbness or tingling or a nervous system disease such as multiple sclerosis or Guillain-Barré syndrome
  • Have or had heart failure
  • Have recently received or are scheduled to receive a vaccine. HUMIRA patients may receive vaccines, except for live vaccines. Children should be brought up to date on all vaccines before starting HUMIRA
  • Are allergic to rubber, latex, or any HUMIRA ingredients
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to breastfeed
  • Have a baby and you were using HUMIRA during your pregnancy. Tell your baby’s doctor before your baby receives any vaccines

  • Nervous system problems.  Signs and symptoms include numbness or tingling, problems with your vision, weakness in your arms or legs, and dizziness.
