The Lion King

Set against the majesty of the Serengeti Plains and to the evocative rhythms of Africa, Disney's multi award-winning musical.

Based on the Disney animated film, The Lion King premiered on Broadway in 1997 and The Lion King London opened in October 1999, playing to packed houses ever since!

The Lion King Musical transports audiences to a dazzling world that explodes with glorious colours, stunning effects and enchanting music. At its heart is the powerful and moving story of Simba - the epic adventure of his journey from wide-eyed cub to his destined role as King of the Pridelands.

Brilliantly reimagined by acclaimed director Julie Taymor, Disney’s beloved film has been transformed into a spectacular theatrical experience that explodes with glorious colours, stunning effects and enchanting music.

With music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice, a musical score created by Hans Zimmer and choral arrangements by Lebo M, Disney's The Lion King London songs include I Just Can't Wait to Be King, The Circle of Life, Endless Night and Shadow Land.

The Lion King is recommended for a general audience. As an advisory to adults who might bring young people, Disney recommends The Lion King for ages 6 and up. Children under the age of 3 will not be admitted into the theatre. All persons aged 16 or under must be accompanied by an adult and may not sit on their own within the auditorium. All persons entering the theatre, regardless of age must have a ticket.

Duration - Approx. 2 hours 30 mins including interval. Age guidance 6+.

Our review on The Lion King

Disney's the lion king - palace theatre, manchester - tuesday 1st november 2022 by karen ryder, manchester is feeling the love of the lion king - long live the king.

“Nannnnnsss igonnnniyaaaa! Baggabitinaaahhhh, sita ummmmm benya bahhh”

If those garbled bunch of letters above, which I can assure you bear no actual resemblance to the real lyrics, mean anything to you at all, then right now you will be picturing a glorious sun rise, deers tilting their heads in the morning glow and birds soaring across a flame lit horizon. That is the power of The Lion King ! That is what will give you goosebumps on your goosebumps within the first few seconds of the show starting, and that is why you simply have to be a part of the Disney magic. I go to the theatre A LOT, for both work and pleasure, and I cannot think of another show where just one song in I have tears rolling down my cheeks at the sheer abundance of joy, and the overwhelming nature of my emotions at the spectacular experience I have just encountered. It is incomparable and as you reconnect with that excited inner child as your imagination is ignited, you simply will not know where to look or fathom how to take in everything presented before you. It is the most joyous encounter where nature meets theatre magic, and it is right here in Manchester! No wonder it was announced earlier this week that The Lion King has extended its already epic run till the 11th March 2023, making Manchester it’s home for a whopping 19 weeks! I don’t need to eat right? Or heat my house? I can just keep returning to watch it time and time again!

So, unless you have been living under Pride Rock then you will know the story of The Lion King , and if you’re anything like my family, will have re-enacted its scenes with the younger members countless times. Mufasa is King of the Pride Lands and as he announces the birth of his son and future King Simba at a ceremony, the animals rejoice. Mufasa rules with a respectful command and adheres to the balance of nature and the circle of life, ensuring he is admired by all. All except his brother Scar that is, who has suppressed his bitter jealousy for years in the hope that one day he will take over as King, but now Simba has been born, that day will never come. As Simba playfully practises his hunting with friend Nala, Scar is plotting his death. Time after time Scar tries and fails to make Simba disappear, so when Mufasa runs to rescue Simba from a stampede created by Scar, he grasps the opportunity to kill Mufasa. A traumatised Simba believes Scar when he is told it’s his fault the King is dead and he must run. Run and never return. Enter Timone and Pumba who unknowingly raise the future King, until one day Nala shows up looking for help as Scar has over hunted and decimated the Pride Lands. As they fall in love, this loyal and quirky army head back to claim what is rightfully Simba’s. Lots of roaring later, Simba wins, has a son of his own, and the circle of life continues. It’s all a bit Hamlet and it’s all a bit brilliant.

lion king uk tour manchester

The stage production of The Lion King was ground breaking when it was first staged and there is still little that can touch its genius today. With exemplary design by Julie Taymour , animals are brought to life in a unique and credible way, ensuring that we believe completely in the character and accept their stories, rather than being reluctant to cheer on a cutesy fluffy lion cub. The brilliance is that nothing is hidden. The mechanics of the puppets, the masks, the set and the movement of the animals is unashamedly on view for all to witness, adding a brilliant new element for audiences everywhere and engaging even those who are reluctant to admit that they love this Disney classic. But we all know that Disney is genuinely for any age and the production and message (and some of the adult only jokes) behind this show prove that tenfold. I know I gained a whole new perspective watching it this evening than when I first watched it in my early twenties. It is a show that grows old with you, presenting new messages and meaning depending on where you find yourself in life. I have never wiped away so many sneaky tears as I did tonight for example in the beautifully bonding father and son song by Mufasa of “He Lives In You.”

lion king uk tour manchester

There are endless moments to gush about in The Lion King , from the mesmerising “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King,” where an impressive curtain drops down and provides plenty of reveals, including moving floats and giraffes that bow down into the audience, to the mesmerising “He Lives In You Reprise,” where lights are used to truly create beautiful art and collect together in waves to produce Mufasa’s reflection in the water. I was in awe at the sheer brilliance of how this was put together, and it’s really hard trying to review something when you want to talk incessantly about every detail but equally want to allow others to savour the moment and the magic for themselves. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, inflatables are introduced, shadow puppets astound, cast members continually surprise you with their entrances. There’s flying, dazzling colour, and the intrinsically genius use of size and perspective to create a stampede and show the wildebeest getting closer. Heck, even Bury market gets a mention - I kid you not! This show is a spectacle, and each number brings a new level of magic, excitement and wonder to the stage. It will blow your winter socks off. “Be Prepared” by Scar is one of my favourites for it is such a pivotal moment and you feel this deep in your core from the shivers down your spine, to the hairs on your arms standing to attention. It’s difficult to explain as the whole show ignites all of your senses, and then a few more you didn’t even know you had!

Jean-Luc Guizonne (international Lion King tours, Chicago, Moana) is thoroughly stunning, commanding, and regal as Mufasa. His rich deep voice grasps you by the heart and his stage presence is definitely fit for a King. Its hard to take your eyes off him. Richard Hurst (The Bodyguard, Sunny Afternoon, Eastenders) is outstanding as Scar and his dry, dark cynicism drips deliciously from his every word and move. He embodies the character with every nuance of his being. They make for a thrilling combination during their scenes together, complimenting each other through their contrasting character qualities. Thandazile Soni (international Lion King tours) is incredible as Rafiki. The click language used (Xhosa - a Nguni Bantu language and one of the official languages of South Africa) is hypnotic in quality and I could have listened to far more. Loveable, wise, funny and with an air of something that quite frankly transcends words, you can’t take your eyes off her either. Matthew Forbes (War Horse, The Good Life, The Wizard Of Oz) blew my mind with his utterly convincing puppetry as Zazu and his relentless energy throughout. His voice alone draws you in, and a British humour shone through. Alan McHale (The Clockmakers Daughter, Oliver With A Twist, Macbeth) and Carl Sanderson (Sweet Charity, That Day We Sang, 42nd Street) are comedy gold as Timon and Pumbaa. Again, their puppetry was phenomenal. They know exactly how to work an audience and gained the most giggles from the children in the audience. Stephenson Ardern-Sodjet (Hamilton, As You Like It, Macbeth) is enchanting as Simba and Nokwanda Khuzwayo (The Lion King international, How Long Musical) is mesmerising and powerful as Nala. The duo are playful and powerful, gentle and fierce, and their cat like moves are purrfect (sorry!). Their duets are sublime, their solos stunning. They leap across the stage with such ease, making it look so easy you start to believe you can do it yourself – until reality kicks in and you trip over your merchandise bag just standing up to applaud! Rebecca Omogbehin, Simon Trinder , and Owain Rhys Davies blend brilliantly to create the hilarious hyenas and will have you belly laughing at their escapades. This costume, more than any other, had me transfixed and their agility in making it so believable should be applauded. The young Simba and Nala matched the professional standard of every adult on the stage and it was a pleasure to witness our future West end leads in the making. The entire ensemble is out of this world, and if you ever needed proof – their acapella opening of the second act will leave you in no doubt.

And even with all of that - I’m still not finished! Throw in acrobatics, stilt walking, incredible costumes - each entirely unique and a work of art in itself, African drums played within the theatre itself creating a surround sound feel, humour, heartache, pathos, acceptance, and you’ll come out feeling inspired, invigorated and like you’ve had the best free therapy ever because the show is jam packed with so much awe, so much life that it not only entertains to the highest standards, but it offers a gentle and safe way to deal with some of lifes biggest heartaches such as grief, self-doubt, betrayal, responsibility, values and strength during adversity. The Lion King encourages you to find strength and belief in yourself and your abilities. What a gift of a show.

I am thrilled and honoured that I have been lucky enough to watch The Lion King this evening and am beside myself that I am coming again with my family in December. But with an extended run till 11th March 2023, I make absolutely no promise that this will be my last visit to the African pride lands, and feel a rebirth of my nephews favourite game returning as we recreate the numerous scenes! I am certainly feeling the love tonight, so Long live the King!

Disney’s multi award-winning musical  The Lion King will be making its highly-anticipated return to Manchester this year.

The show was supposed to embark upon its UK tour last year but, thanks to various Covid restrictions still in force, it had no choice but to postpone.

But now, after a couple of date changes, it has been confirmed that The Lion King will enjoy a three-month residency at Manchester’s Palace Theatre this Autumn.

The Lion King

The production is made up of over fifty actors, singers and dancers, and uses over 200 life-size puppets to tell the iconic tale of Simba’s journey as he enters adulthood and reclaims his title as King.

The Lion King’s stage adaptation was initially brought to life by Julie Taymor in 1997 and has since gone on to become one of the most successful Broadway performances of all time, with it having twenty-five global productions performed in nine different languages.

The show has been watched by a global audience of over 100 million in over 100 cities in twenty countries – sixteen million here in the UK alone.

As a part of its UK & Ireland 2022 tour, The Lion King will be taking over Manchester’s  Palace Theatre , located down Oxford Street, from October 27th, 2022 – December 24th, 2022.

The legendary Manchester Flower Festival is returning to our city later this month, complete with pop-ups, installations and tributes to some local icons.

Taking place over the late May Bank Holiday, the event will be headlined by its ‘Floral Trail’. This year’s theme is Manchester Icons, with a host of names past and present being honoured in flower form, including the late comedy legend Caroline Aherne, pop star Sarah Harding and suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst.

lion king uk tour manchester

The Vain Photography / Manchester Flower Festival

Collaborating with Manchester illustrator Stanley Chow, floral designer Liv Woodward will create a portrait of Caroline Aherne at the Floral Marquee on New Cathedral Street, using sustainably sourced plants and flowers. Girls Aloud star Sarah Harding will be remembered in a ‘tribute garden’, sponsored by the AO Arena, with visitors able to donate to the Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal by scanning the QR code at the display.

The homage to Pankhurst has been created by female-led Decordia, featuring an ornate wooden Manchester Town Hall-inspired planter with sashes, posters and colourful icons, alongside a wicker figure of the suffragette herself.

This can be found at the corner of Cross Street and King Street, adorned with purple, green and white plants – the colours of the suffragette movement.

Other local legends will also be honoured with their own installations, including Happy Mondays vocalist Rowetta and iconic Manchester brewery Boddingtons .

Fringe events will be taking place too, at locations including Northern Quarter art shop Fred Aldous, The Bridgewater Hall, the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel and the National Trust’s Castlefield Viaduct.

Selfridges Exchange Square, El Gato Negro, Tast Catala, Franco Manca, Grand Pacific Manchester and Urban Playground will also be taking part, with alfresco dining, festival-related dishes and cocktails.

Now in its seventh year, the Flower Festival, which is put together by Manchester City Centre Business Improvement District, attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year, with live entertainment, workshops, and arts and crafts markets.

It all happens from May 24th to May 27th – head over to the website HERE to find more information.

Be mesmerised as Disney's The Lion King musical roars into the North West

12 new cast members have joined the UK and Ireland tour to entertain from Manchester Palace

  • 08:49, 1 DEC 2022

lion king uk tour manchester

The UK and Ireland tour of Disney’s The Lion King will welcome 12 new members to its cast of more than 50 actors, singers and dancers this winter.

The award-winning landmark musical is currently playing a season at Manchester Palace until 11 March, where more than 300,000 people will experience the show during the only North West dates.

The story of The Lion King roars into life using spectacular masks, puppets and costumes to tell the story of Simba's epic adventures, as he struggles with the responsibilities of adulthood and becoming king.

Stepping into the role of Simba will be Kyle Richardson from St Kitts in the Caribbean, who has previously performed in the show as part of the ensemble in Madrid and is in the current UK and Ireland production.

The Lion King will also welcome Alex Bloomer as Ed and Candida Mosoma as Shenzi, and current ensemble cast member Jorell Coiffic-Kamall will be taking on the role of Banzai. The ensemble cast will be joined by Tanisha-Mae Brown, Asmara Cammock, Zodwa Mrasi, Felipe Flores, Reece McKenzie, Aphiwe Nyezi, Peace Nzirawa and Ebby Sama.

The new cast will join the production from December 11, joining principals Matthew Forbes as Zazu, Jean-Luc Guizonne as Mufasa, Richard Hurst as Scar, Nokwanda Khuzwayo as Nala, Alan McHale as Timon, Thandazile Soni as Rafiki and Carl Sanderson as Pumbaa.

A production which feels the love

lion king uk tour manchester

Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, under the direction of Thomas Schumacher, the previous tour of The Lion King broke attendance records across the nation, including at Manchester's Palace Theatre. Since the UK premiere in 1999, The Lion King London has entertained more than 18m theatregoers and is the sixth longest-running West End musical of all time.

The stunning artistry of the production is the work of a team of designers which drew on diverse cultural influences to recreate the rich colours and vast expanses of the African savanna in this daring and inspiring reinvention of one of the most successful animated feature films of all time.

The original score from the animated film was expanded for the stage and now features 15 musical numbers. Elton John and Tim Rice have added three new numbers to the five that they wrote for the award-winning score of the animated film. The resulting sound of The Lion King is a fusion of Western popular music and the distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa.

The tour is currently in Manchester until March 11, before seasons in Sunderland, Bristol and Birmingham.

Latest Review – Disney’s The Lion King [Palace Theatre, Manchester] [UK Tour]

lion king uk tour manchester

THE LION KING

Palace Theatre, Manchester

Until Saturday 11th March 2023

The atmosphere inside the theatre last night was electric as Disney’s   The Lion King opened its mammoth and newly extended 19-week run at Manchester’s Palace Theatre, which will now take it through to 11th March 2023. Originally scheduled to open in October 2020, but postponed due to the COVID pandemic, audiences have had to wait patiently for the rescheduled dates to arrive, but that wait was well worth it, and on the strength of last night’s performance, surely nobody could have left the theatre disappointed.

Twenty-five years on from its original premiere there isn’t a great deal left to say about  Julie Taymor’s landmark  production except, however, to simply echo the thoughts of many others in that it remains one of the most spectacular and innovative productions the theatre has seen; a joyous, rousing celebration of African culture, dazzling stagecraft and thrilling artistry. What’s more, it boasts what is surely the most awe-inspiring opening in the musical theatre canon.

Audience members young and old sit wide-eyed and beaming from ear to ear as a lone cheetah and two stilted giraffes lead a chorus of animal puppets – including a life-sized elephant and calf, which enter (with many others) through the stalls – for the iconic Circle Of Life . It is an incredibly powerful spectacle that really sets the bar for the rest of the show, and feels incredibly moving as the stirring music and vocals begin to swell.

Featuring those majestic songs by Elton John and Tim Rice, a book by Roger Allers (who co-directed the film with Rob Minkoff) and Irene Mecchi (who co-wrote the original screenplay with Jonathan Roberts and Linda Woolverton), along with additional music and lyrics by Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor, and Hans Zimmer, The Lion King is a flawless adaptation of one of the most beloved films of them all. Taymor’s ingenious staging still feels as sublime and ground-breaking as it must have done when it was first presented back in 1997.

The show features a total of 232 puppets, incorporating rod puppets, shadow puppetry and full-sized puppets, some of which are inspired by Japanese Bunraku   puppetry . Much like the monumental War Horse , the quality of the puppets, combined with the talent and skill of the cast and puppeteers, really does make you forget there are people operating them. Everything just feels so fluid and so slick to the point where performers and design elements simply become one, whether it be the animals or set features as seen with the grasslands costumes.

Most of the audience will know the story backwards, mouth along with every lyric, and probably all the dialogue too, but the show is so beautifully crafted, so innovative that it takes the cherished film and transforms it into something that still feels fresh and new. It’s richer, more expansive, and more alive. It is a profound and uplifting celebration of Africa, its culture and its music.

lion king uk tour manchester

With an extraordinary company of nearly forty it seems unfair to single out individual performances as each and every member of the cast excels in their own right. The Lion King is very much an ensemble piece and the talent, skill and puppetry displayed throughout the production is simply outstanding. It is lovely to see that the cast look like they are having as much fun as the audience are watching them.

Musical Director Jon Aspital conducts a exceptional band of eleven, with two percussionists even taking up two of the boxes out in the auditorium, either side of the stage. The score is iconic and the music is astonishing. The band do it full justice.

Staging a production like this is a real feat so special mention must go to the behind the scenes crew who help bring the technical elements to life.

There is a reason The Lion King continues to pack out houses at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway (where it is now the third longest running show in Broadway history), at the Lyceum Theatre in London’s West End and in other international productions and tours all around the world. The appeal is universal, the heartwarming (and often heartbreaking) tale  resonates with everyone and the production is just so accessible.

A true theatrical spectacle and an utterly sublime production. Joyous, overwhelming and exhilarating.

Running Time: 2 hours and 30 minutes (approx.), including one 15-minute interval.

Final Performance at the Palace Theatre, Manchester:  11th March 2023.

Smash hit musical The Lion King will finally make a return to Manchester later this year.

The award-winning theatre show had to postpone its run at the Palace Theatre in the autumn of 2020 due to the ongoing coronavirus restrictions.

After a few date changes, the stage adaptation of the 1994 Disney film will be back in the city for a three-month run.

The spellbinding show marries puppetry (there are 232 puppets in every show) and costumes with a huge cast of actors to bring Simba’s tale to life.

The Lion King’s theatre adaptation features all the familiar hits, including The Circle of Life and Can You Feel The Long Tonight , with a soundtrack written by the likes of Elton John, Tim Rice and South African composer Lebo M.

The musical follows young lion Simba’s journey to becoming King of the Pridelands, joined by other characters such as Timon and Pumba, Nala, Scar, and Zazu.

It was won six Tony awards since launching on Broadway in the late 1990s.

Last night, we checked out the latest edition of JB Shorts at 53Two, featuring six super relevant and often hilarious short plays right here in Manchester city centre.

Covering everything from grief and UK politics to AI, each story had its own unique spin and definitely made you think.

Joyce Branagh’s Isobel Openshaw Saves the Day kicks off JB Shorts with a bang. This political comedy, directed by Alyx Tole, had a proper feel of old British sketches. Branagh, who also plays Isobel, nails it with her sharp, witty character who sees through political BS.

With Joanne Dakin as Jenny Legohead and Callum Sim in multiple roles, the cast’s comic timing is spot-on. The plot follows Isobel’s wild rise in politics, poking fun at British political antics and media hype. This had stellar performances all around and the lively humour made it a great opener.

Bar 53two

Next up was Maz Hedgehog’s Aftercare , directed by Justina Aina, which shifted the mood with a more introspective tone. This piece is set outside a sex party and explores the emotional aftermath of an intense encounter relating to BDSM, in an attempted playful manner.

Meg Narongchai as Bree and Trayvaughn Robins as Tobi could potentially have done with polishing this a little more; we sometimes struggled to understand the purpose and meaning of the story as the delivery and performances weren’t quite up to scratch – all effort though.

It wasn’t until Macaulay Cooper burst onto the stage that we understood what they were going for a little more, bringing his infectious and playful energy to a story that certainly needs some work/tweaking. The play struggles to find its footing; the dialogue, though sassy and heartfelt at times, just didn’t quite land, leaving myself and the audience wanting more from this.

Food Fight , by Lindsay Williams and Cathy Crabb, directed by Miranda Parker, brings back the energy with a comedic yet touching look at food banks and poverty. Jenny Williams is great as the bossy Davina, who has her own biases about food distribution.

Jessica Ellis’ Amy challenges these ideas, adding real conflict. The supporting cast, including Chris Brett and Emily Ash, were a great addition who brought lots of camaraderie, I especially loved the line about the tins of beans. The ending felt slightly rushed however the play’s timely social critique and charming characters make this a solid piece.

Dave Simpson’s Life Is No Joke , directed by Robert Marsden, this one plucked those heartstrings – A heartfelt look at fatherhood and unfulfilled dreams. Darren Jeffries shines as Mike, an accountant dreaming of a comedy career, while Manc acting veteran John Henshaw is perfect as the old-school comedian father, Kenny.

I absolutely fell in love with all three of these characters and their sheer vulnerability. Amy Du Quesne narrates and plays Kathy (Mike’s love interest) so well, while Darren and Amy oozed chemistry, making the sad moments hit even harder. The play balanced laughs with touching moments, getting the audience involved from the start to create a strong connection and make this an emotional highlight.

James Quinn and Trevor Suthers’ This is Not a Play – directed by Quinn himself – tackles the complex and timely issue of AI and its impact on reality and creativity. John Tueart and Victoria Tunnah play siblings entangled in a narrative about deepfakes and career sabotage.

And a massive thank you to our sponsors @motorsolicitor and David Rutherford and Diana Hamilton Fairley. Steve Jones and Manchester City Council. We really appreciate your ongoing support at this difficult time for the arts. — JB Shorts (@Jbshortsplays) May 19, 2024

With a standout performance from Tueart, particularly, the dialogue is sharp and thought-provoking, though it occasionally veers into verbosity. The play’s meta-theatrical twist adds a clever layer but also highlights the limitations of AI in creative storytelling, ultimately reassuring the audience that the human touch remains irreplaceable.

The night ends with Debbie Oates’ Mrs Proops , directed by Ellie Rose. Isabel Ford and Toby Hadoke lead this touching story about grief and inheritance, with Marc Parrett’s cat puppet, brought to life by Kery Elly, stealing the show.

The plot revolves around Gaz’s struggle with his sister’s death and the quirky terms of her will. Despite a slow pace, the play’s emotional depth and charming performances provide a thoughtful end to the evening, leaving the audience pondering themes of loss and family.

The reviews for the night as a whole have been pretty strong across the board.

Amazing night at @53two watching @Jbshortsplays ! The plays were fantastic from start to finish and the talent on show was incredible! Everyone nailed it 💙🔥 pic.twitter.com/07KUGhsrdD — Joshua Chadwick (@JoshChadwickAct) May 17, 2024

JB Shorts is a great platform for new writing, offering an affordable and diverse night of theatre. Even with some unevenness, the collection of plays brings humour, insight, and heartfelt moments, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

We’ve also got a lot of love for 53Two , which remains an important theatre space, cultural site and charity here in Manchester city centre.

Since taking over the reins from founding venue Joshua Brooks in 2016, this low-key theatrical event has gone on to become a real returning cult favourite year after year and one that’s well worth going along and giving a try.

Review: The Lion King

By Katie Bray

Article Summary

Review: The Lion King

Disney’s award-winning musical The Lion King has finally arrived at Manchester’s Palace Theatre and has been so successful that the residency has been extended, again, so hunt down your tickets quickly before the hyenas snatch the remains!

The story follows Simba (Stephenson Ardern-Sodje), a lion cub destined to become king after his father Mufasa (Jean-Luc Guizonne) is killed by his treacherous uncle, Scar (Richard Hurst). Blaming himself for his father’s death, Simba runs away, meeting witty meerkat Timon (Alan Mchale) and flatulent warthog Pumba (Carl Sanderson), who teach him their carefree ways, before his love, Nala (Nokwanda Khuzwayo), and wise baboon Rafiki (Thandazile Soni) call him back to reclaim his rightful place on the throne and in the circle of life.

I awaited the show with excited anticipation for such a purrrfect theatrical reinterpretation of one of the best animated movies ever made. I was slightly apprehensive about how realistic the animal characters would feel but was immediately overwhelmed by the realism from the range of colourful costumes and makeup designs, realistic animalistic movements and interpretive dance (also used in more ‘violent’ moments), all performed with such breath-taking fluidity.

The show features intricately designed puppets of cheetahs, hyenas (Rebecca Omogbehin, Simon Trinder and Owain Rhys Davies), meerkats, warthogs, and hornbills, mobiles of flying birds and buzzards, stilted giraffes and enormous elephants, projections, shadow puppets, and lion and buffalo costumes.

Even the grass was occasionally transformed into costumes to ensure that nature moved with liveliness, or it was used to hide certain puppetry effects, or as a backdrop, dragged slowly as a character moved in the opposite direction.

‘I Just Can’t Wait to Be King’ added more abstract representations of animals, including giraffes leaning over the audience from the stage, animals ridden by the cubs, and a dash of colour and fun. An especially impressive effect was used in Scar’s costume with a mask that had a frame behind the neck allowing it to move according to the actor’s stance, creating a prowling and realistic version of scar, which at times covered the human actor entirely in an unnerving but brilliant effect as he skulked in elephant-bone structures.

I cried a total of three times in the most impressive of scenes. The first occasion was during ‘Circle of Life’, which brought so much life and immersion to the audience who gasped as the musical harmonies built, animal puppets were slowly brought upon all sections of the stage, and every space of the theatre was used, including the aisles, for surprising closeup displays of the puppetry of elephants and more.

Musical instruments were spread across the orchestra pit, singers were placed onstage and at the sides of the audience, and drummers were placed in the boxes – which added a sense of immersion that drew the audience into a jaw-dropping experience. Even the staired structure of Pride Rock and the iconic lifting of Simba were incredible sights to behold, earning immediate applause from the audience. It’s an emotional, awe-inspiring, and immersive experience unlike any other.

Particularly amazing puppetry was seen in Zazu (Matthew Forbes), the life-size Timon, Pumba and his extendable tongue, and a fascinating cheetah attached through a series of wires to each part of the actor’s body to create seamlessly graceful movements. The giraffe and elephant were also spectacular, with massive and grand structures that seemed almost impossible to physically exist. It was as if each person and creature were separate entities, performing together with vivacity.

Whilst every moment gripped me, one of the most impactful moments was the tear-jerking stampede scene, which seemed an almost impossible feat to take to recreate on stage… boy, was I wrong!

Scar’s now infamous betrayal was portrayed with a layering of screens to resemble the canyon structure before shadow buffalos came to life, quickly moving down the canyon side towards the levitating Simba (seen hanging on a tree branch) when the buffalos finally reach the main stage as tribal masked dancers.

Mufasa climbs the cliffside screens before Scar appears from above, and Mufasa falls, harnessed in a cacophony of lights and screams, followed by a brilliantly-portrayed young Simba and later lionesses, alongside Rafiki, who pine over his death. This moment was all the more heart-wrenching due to the perfect portrayal of Simba and Mufasa’s relationship as light-hearted, loving, well-humoured and protective, with playful antics as well as serious reflections on mortality in ‘They Live in You/He Lives in You (Reprise)’, featuring a grand version of the Mufasa storm cloud which looms lovingly over Simba.

Beyond the spectacles of set and costumes (produced by Richard Hudson, Julie Taymor, and Michael Curry), amazing acting and interpretive dances, the performance never missed a beat, always understanding how to lighten or dramatisise the more emotional moments to effectively impact the viewer, yet able to simultaneously balance these emotions with puns, fourth wall-breaks, and region-based jokes, for instance, Zazu stating that the curtains “look like something from Bury Market” had the audience in stitches.

The musical introduces new songs, including The Lion King 2 ’s ‘He Lives in You’, as well as songs created especially for the musical, including: Simba’s power ballad ‘Endless Nights’, Nala’s reflective ‘Shadowland’, the hyena trio’s ‘Chow Down’, and the ensembles gospel-like ‘One by One’. These perfectly fit with the songs translated from the original movie and added extra emotional reflection of each character’s inner turmoil, thoughts and unexpressed feelings.

The stage musical also introduces a blend of different song styles and cultural influences, ranging from Japanese to African , in their costume representations and more. Indeed, each costume represents something about Africa or the character’s mannerisms; the circular structure of Mufasa’s mask representing the sun and his enforcement of the circle of life, unlike his sharp-quilled brother Scar, whilst Rafiki represents an African healer , adorned with medicinal bottles and shells.

My personal favourite song addition was adult Simba’s ‘Endless Nights’ and both versions of ‘They/He Lives in You’ which were sung with such raw emotion, especially by Simba. Saying this, every singer from the ensemble to the main cast was phenomenal in their dancing and singing roles, and it would be impossible to choose just one performer as a favourite. Even the child actors were astounding in their roles.

One of the most fun moments of the musical was always going to be ‘Hakuna Matata’. The transition from young to adult Simba was fun, recycling Simba’s iconic Tarzan swing from the movie before the interval. Every scene transitioned between characters, times and places with such grace that it felt so effective and life-filled; this experience is the closest anyone will ever feel to the world of The Lion King .

I was overwhelmed by the intricate attention to detail and emotion that paid respect to an animated classic with its own flare and charisma, potentially even beating the movie! The cast should be full of  pride at their achievements, creating a lifelike and immersive Pride Lands experience for viewers of all ages to enjoy.

With over 150 people onstage and backstage needed to maintain the show, and 230-odd puppets used, and the use of several languages, it is a show of dedication and love, deeply rooted in the animation as a love letter to culture and music. It is a musical spectacular which unsurprisingly saw the whole audience united in a standing ovation.

The Lion King  is at the Palace Theatre until March 11 2023. After this huge run, the  UK tour  visits  Sunderland Empire  from March 16 to May 6 and  Birmingham Hippodrome from July 6 to September 16, with more venues to be announced.

Why See The Lion King?

Musicals Family Shows

See the musical classic near you!

The vastly successful re-imagining of Disney's 1994 beloved film takes to the road once more. Conjuring up the African savannah in all its grand, majestic beauty, using elaborate costuming, puppetry, and soaring African melodies, discover just why The Lion King is the world's most popular musical and prepare to be transported from the grey streets to the brilliant wilds of Southern Africa in this iconic family tale. A must-see for fans of either movie.

First seen on Broadway in 1997, The Lion King began its London reign the next year at the Lyceum theatre, its UK home to this day. A multiple award-winner, it has now racked up 70 (and counting) worldwide productions and boasts audience numbers in the 100s of millions, eager to experience its legendary stagecraft.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Affectionately dubbed "Hamlet with fur", we follow the trials of a young lion prince called Simba, who one day is destined to rule over the sun-drenched Pride Lands, as the Lion King. After the murder of his father by his treacherous uncle, Scar, Simba is convinced of his own guilt in this, and runs away from his pride, in self-imposed exile.

Rescued by an unlikely pair of friends; Timon the meerkat, and Pumbaa the flatulent warthog, both themselves exiles, Simba grows up to enjoy life, whilst not quite escaping the trauma of his past. When Scar's rule threatens the future of the Pride Lands, will Simba finally accept his responsibilities of adulthood to return and stake his claim to the throne and restore harmony?

CREATING THE SHOW

The stunning sets and African-themed costuming of The Lion King is the result of extensive research into diverse cultural influences to recreate the rich colours and vast expanses of the African savanna.

A cast of 40 singers and dancers transform themselves into anthropomorphic animals from the ubiquitous lions, with handsprung manes and masks, through to elegant puppeteered cheetahs and giraffes. The music of the show takes strong influence from African music, specifically Lebo M, whilst carrying a classic quality from Elton John and Tim Rice, who wrote the original score.

The Lion King launches UK tour, dates in Bristol & Manchester

As previously tipped, Disney’s long-running West End musical The Lion King will embark on a UK tour later this year.

After four years of planning, producers Disney Theatrical Group have today (6 February 2012) announced that the show will tour with a company of 52 to ten cities in the UK and Ireland over the next two and a half years.

Dates and locations for engagements past Manchester into 2013 have still to be announced.

Based on Disney’s 1994 animated feature film, the stage adaptation opened at Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre in November 1997. Julie Taymor ‘s production transferred to the West End in 1999, opening at the Lyceum on 19 October 1999 (previews from 24 September).

In a press statement about the tour Disney Theatrical Group president Thomas Schumacher said: “Following years of planning, and after receiving the counsel of some very smart friends in the British theatre world, we are delighted to be launching a production that conveys Julie Taymor ’s epic vision and at a moment that feels absolutely right.”

Although there are currently 19 global productions of the The Lion King , with the show having been seen by more than 65 million people in 15 countries across five continents, this will be the first time the show has hit the road in the UK.

The Lion King features 15 songs, including the five from the film and new songs by Elton John and Tim Rice , with additional numbers by South African-born Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Hans Zimmer and Julie Taymor. The book is by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi .

Nationwide has doubled its maximum personal loan amount from £25,000 to £50,000.

The building society said its decision would help customers cope with rising construction costs, with many turning to loans to help with home improvement projects.

More than four in 10 households were hoping to start renovation plans and the end of this month, it said.

But, with recent forecasts predicting a 15% uplift in building costs over the next five years, they could be facing much steeper bills.

"With the impact of inflation and other external pressures, the costs of construction have seen significant increases in recent years," said head of personal loans at Nationwide Darren Bailey.

"However, we recognise many people will want to continue with the home improvement plans, even if that means they have downscaled their plans to accommodate their budget.

"Our increased maximum personal loan size of £50,000 means we have an option to suit everyone."

The increased loan amount will be available to Nationwide current account holders.

Customers can apply for the loan online, in branch or on the phone and receive the money the same day.

PrettyLittleThing has been reprimanded for posting "misleading" adverts, marking its ninth warning in four years.

Complaints about the online fashion retailer were made following its Black Friday social media campaign in November.

The Advertising Standards Authority investigated 15 posts on X, which mentioned several discounts ranging from 30% to 99%.

PrettyLittleThing said the period had become well known to consumers in the UK as a time when business offered promotions.

It also said its advertising and marketing was "reflective of what their customers wanted and expected", and "further terms and conditions were on their website".

However, the ASA found three issues with the campaign.

It said some misled customers into believing all products were included in the promotion, when some were excluded.

Others failed to specify when the deal ended, and some breached advertising rules with the "inclusion of closing dates from ads when promotional periods were shortened or extended".

In previous rulings, the company was found to have: broken the ASA's rules on offence and responsibility by objectifying women; run social media partnerships with influencers that did not make clear they were ads; run promotions that had not been administered fairly.

"While one breach of our rules is one too many, the bulk of the rulings were between 2020-22," the ASA told the Money team.

"To date, two have been published in the last two years. We hope the downward trend in upheld rulings continues but will take action if we see any ongoing issues."

Inflation is forecast to have fallen to around the Bank of England's 2% target in April - with an announcement at 7am on Wednesday.

A fall in the energy price cap at the start of April is a key reason - energy prices have been a driver of the huge price rises seen in the last two years.

The Bank itself forecast inflation could hit 2.1% for April - down from 3.2% in March and the 40-year high of 11.1% in October 2022.

Respected insights firm Pantheon Macroeconomics thinks it could hit 2% due to "four components"...

  • Ofgem's 12.3% price cap cut that took effect in April will slice 40bp off CPI inflation;
  • Food inflation shaves another 14bp off overall inflation, as fading commodity-price rises pass through to consumers;
  • The BRC Shop Price Index suggests another fall in goods inflation, with help from weaker global costs, cutting headline inflation by 36bp;
  • Services inflation is estimated to have fallen to 5.4% in April, from 6.0% in March - a range of items such as mobile bills and rents saw hikes, but these were less severe than those a year previously.

Industry figures released on Tuesday suggest food inflation is indeed falling...

The main upward driver of inflation in April was the price of petrol, which spiked during the month due to Iran-Israel tensions.

Capital Economics also forecasts overall CPI could dip to 2% - and says we could see inflation at 1% later this year, lower than the BoE expects.

It thinks energy prices will keep falling and "that, in response to the previous falls in agricultural commodity prices, CPI food inflation will fall below zero".

Inflation falls will influence how soon we get an interest rate cut - as rates are kept high in order to tame inflation by squeezing the economy.

The next Bank of England decision is on 20 June.

Pantheon says: "Markets are pricing a 60% chance of a rate cut in June and more than fully pricing one by August, so the key question is not whether the MPC will ease soon but how quickly it will cut again after the first reduction.

"We expect one cut per quarter to a 3.5% terminal rate, but with risks skewed to the BoE pausing temporarily at 4.0% to 4.5%."

Hotel Chocolat is to open 20 stores over the next 18 months and is expanding its online reach.

The shops will open in retail parks and feature a different design concept.

Speaking during Retail Gazette's Future Consumer Debate, the company's head of customer marketing, Amy Harman, said shoppers want to be able to see, smell and feel the chocolate they're buying.

"That's very much what we’re looking to do in our stores," she said.

Explaining the choice to target retail parks, she said that's where the footfall and demand is.

"There's more intent with consumers. They're going for a day out and going for an experience," she added.

The announcement comes as the brand prepares to launch on TikTok shop in the coming weeks as it looks to expand its online audience.

Dishoom has launched a legal battle over the cockney rhyming slang for curry.

The restaurant chain, which can be found in London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Birmingham, has asked for the term Ruby Murray to be freed up by the Intellectual Property Office.

At the moment, a man named Tariq Aziz has the rights to the name for food and drink uses, with an IPO filing showing he registered the trademark in 2019.

A search of the IPO site shows an application to revoke the trademark registration on the grounds that it has never been used was filed on 15 May by Dishoom Limited.

Mr Aziz now has until 15 July to indicate whether he will offer a defence.

If he fails to do so, the trademark will be revoked and removed from the register.

A Dishoom spokesperson told the Money team it doesn't believe the trademark's owner has ever used it.

"There is a principle of 'use or lose it' in trademark law and we have therefore asked the UK IPO to remove the Ruby Murray mark from the register," they said.

"Dishoom is not seeking to apply to register Ruby Murray in its own name; it wishes to remove the 'monopoly' on the use of Ruby Murray so it can be used freely by anyone when referring to curry."

Dishoom does have a chicken ruby on its menu and in its cookbook and the Money team are big, big fans.

The International Monetary Fund has said the UK economy is heading for a "soft landing", but reiterated its message to Jeremy Hunt that he should not have cut National Insurance at the last two fiscal events.

In its annual check-up on the state of Britain's economy, the Washington-based Fund raised its forecast for gross domestic product growth this year from 0.5% to 0.7%, saying: "The UK economy is approaching a soft landing, with a recovery in growth expected in 2024, strengthening in 2025."

The Fund now expects inflation to come down to close to 2% in the coming months, and the Bank of England to cut interest rates by as much as three quarters of a percent this year, and then another percentage point next year.

The chancellor welcomed the Fund's Article IV report, saying: "Today's report clearly shows that independent international economists agree that the UK economy has turned a corner and is on course for a soft landing.

"The IMF have upgraded our growth for this year and forecast we will grow faster than any other large European country over the next six years - so it is time to shake off some of the unjustified pessimism about our prospects."

Government 'won't meet its debt target'

However, the IMF, which has warned the government explicitly in the past not to cut taxes too fast, in the face of rising spending projections in future, said the two 2p National Insurance contribution cuts at the last two fiscal events were a mistake.

"In light of the medium-term fiscal challenge", the report said, "staff would have recommended against the NIC rate cuts, given their significant cost."

The Fund's staff also believes the government is not on track to meet its main fiscal rule, which commits it to cutting the national debt in five years' time.

It believes net debt will carry on rising towards 97% of GDP in the following years, instead of falling back to 93% of GDP, as the Office for Budget Responsibility has forecast.

The Fund's double-edged report comes amid improving news for the UK.

Data released two weeks ago showed the country ended its short-lived recession with faster than expected growth in the first quarter of the year.

The Office for National Statistics is expected to announce tomorrow that inflation dropped close to the Bank of England's 2% target in April. That may enable the Bank to begin cutting interest rates from their 5.25% level in June or August.

Bank should speak more

The Fund's report contained a number of other recommendations for economic policy in the UK, including that the Bank of England should commit to more news conferences to explain its decisions, and that the government should consider imposing road charges to replace the revenue lost from fuel duty as electric cars become more predominant on UK roads.

For many Britons, retirement means moving somewhere new.

New analysis from relocation experts Property Guides has found the easiest locations for retirees, taking into account culture, visa requirements, cost and more.

Landing in the number one spot is Ireland, with a lack of visa requirements, English-speaking residents and relatively "safe and happy" environment.

Spain, Portugal and Cyprus claim the next three spots on the list.

However, Spain is high on the minimum annual income requirement.

"Spain's is one of the most expensive. It is currently around €27,000 (£23,000) per year for the first applicant. Just over the border in Portugal, it is less than €8,500 per year. Turkey's is the cheapest, working out at a little over £5,000, while Italy requires over €30,000," Property Guides says.

Turkey also came out well for the low cost of living - unlike New Zealand.

European countries in general offer visas aimed specifically at those receiving pensions or investment incomes, according to Property Guides.

Commonwealth countries such as Australia and Canada, however, actively restrict those over 55 from moving there, even if they have a high passive income (income such as pensions, that doesn't require a job).

It becomes easier if retirees have children who are already legal residents.

"Golden visas", which encourage wealthy people to invest in a country, are becoming less common.

"Most countries are now cancelling their residential investment option, including Cyprus and Portugal, and Spain will soon be closing its own. However, for now, you can still get one in Spain, Greece and Turkey, for as little as a €250,000 property, and these we have judged the easiest to retire to."

Property Guides also looked at health services. They took rankings from a Legatum Prosperity Index.

"Top scorers were Germany, Italy and France, in that order. Bottom of the pile was the USA."

The research noted that state pensions are not uprated for retirees in Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

It also factored in "sunshine hours", with the top three being Cyprus, Portugal and the US. Ireland came last here.

Good news for motorists: oil prices are at a more than two-month low at $83.08 for a barrel of Brent crude oil.

Lower prices will likely filter down to the pumps in about 10 days.

But it's not such good news for those in the Brixham area.

The parent company of South West Water - who supplies the Devon area - said 15% don't have normal service.

Shares in Pennon Group, which also owns Bournemouth Water and Bristol Water, fell 6.7% after it reported flat pre-tax profit - £16.8m was recorded for the 2023-24 financial year, the same as 2022-23.

That's despite shareholders being in line for a higher payout of 44.37p  a share.

Drug maker AstraZeneca is one of the best-performing stocks on the FTSE 100 index of most valuable London-listed companies today.

After it announced it aims to double revenues by 2030, the share price rose 0.53%.

If you're buying dollars, you can get $1.27 for your pound or €1.17.

Grocery inflation has eased to its lowest level since October 2021, according to industry data released before official figures tipped to show a big dent in the overall pace of price increases in the economy.

Kantar Worldpanel - which tracks supermarket till prices, sales and market share - said its measure of grocery inflation slowed to 2.4% in the four weeks to 12 May from 3.2% the previous month.

The measure showed there is still upward pressure on the cost of items such as chilled fruit juices, drinks, sugar confectionery and chocolate confectionery - the latter a consequence of poor cocoa harvests.

Prices were still falling fastest in toilet tissues, butter and milk, the report said. It has previously pointed to wider assistance in falling costs from a price war among supermarkets.

Fraser McKevitt, Kantar's head of retail and consumer insight, said: "Grocery price inflation is gradually returning to what we would consider more normal levels. It's now sitting only 0.8 percentage points higher than the 10-year average of 1.6% between 2012 and 2021, which is just before prices began to climb.

"However, after nearly two and a half years of rapidly rising prices, it could take a bit longer for shoppers to unwind the habits they have learnt to help them manage the cost of living crisis."

Airbnb has the highest percentage of scam-related reviews, according to new data.

8.5% of comments left on the holiday-let site warned about scams, travel payment website PayFasto said.

Trivago came in second with 7.5%, Hotels.com third with 6.5%,  Myholidays in fourth with 6.1% and Booking.com fifth with 5.8%.

PayFasto says it is essential to do your research before booking a holiday online.

"Sometimes, if a deal looks way too good to be true, it often is," the company said.

"Make sure you do research on the site and make sure they have legitimate ways to contact them if you were in the position where you needed to. If the site has no contact options, then this is certainly a red flag. "

It also warned holiday-goers to look for the ATOL (Air Travel Organisers' Licensing) scheme on websites, which guarantees customers protection separate from insurance when booking a package holiday that includes a flight.
