Little Tobago

There are birds everywhere but nothing as magnificent as those you see at the Little Tobago bird sanctuary.
Little Tobago is worth the trip. Just imagine a whole island dedicated just to birds. After an incredible hike to the top of the island, feast your eyes on the glorious, Audubon's Shearwater, Brown Booby, Brown Noddy, Sooty and Bridled Terns, Frigate bird, and Red-billed Tropicbird nesting with their baby chicks.
On your journey back, get ready to get wet in the Japanese Garden or the famous Angel Reef. Snorkel to your heart”s delight and see the largest Brain Corals, Manta rays, Turtles, and a reef teeming with marine life.
- In 1909, Sir William Ingram introduced the Greater Bird of Paradise, Paradisaea apoda to the island in an attempt to save the species from the threat of extinction because of the plume trade in its native New Guinea. About 45 juvenile birds were introduced to the island. After Ingram's death in 1924, his heirs deeded the island to the Government of Trinidad and Tobago as a wildlife sanctuary. The birds survived on the island until at least 1958 when they were filmed by a National Geographic crew. There are no reliable records after 1963 when Hurricane Flora hit the island and the population is presumed to be extinct.

This full day tour involves a scenic drive along Tobago’s Windward coast to the remote village of Speyside – beautifully surrounded by the mountains of Tobago’s Main Ridge. This tiny village with a population of about 1000 persons has some of the best coral reefs on the island. The reefs are less disturbed than the more famous Buccoo Reef in the southwest.
Board your glass bottom boat to “Little Tobago” which is easily seen just a short distance offshore. The island supports dry forest and is an important breeding site for seabirds such as red-billed tropicbirds and others. Among the reptiles are lizards such as the large Green Iguanas and various types of geckos, hermit crabs – sometimes a non-poisonous, harmless snake might slither by.
Now the glass bottom boat is all yours for your snorkelling stop at Angel Reef, not far from Goat Island. It is a popular area for snorkelling and diving as the sea between Tobago and Little Tobago is quite shallow (activity depends on weather & sea conditions ). Attractive corals and brightly coloured tropical fish can be spotted. The reef is healthy and alive with lots of coral formations and plenty species of fish. Many have been especially impressed by the French & the Queen Angel Fish – just look for the biggest and brightest fish and voila, here you go! Fun awaits! Check it out!
A tasty local lunch is served close to the sea, at one of our favourite restaurants in the Speyside area.
TIP: We can also visit the famous Argyle Waterfall (easy hike) in Roxborough after lunch, at an additional cost

Red-billed tropic birds, magnificent frigate birds, brown boobies, Audubon’s shearwaters, laughing gulls and sooty terns are some of the species found here. The hilly, arid island, which averages just 1.5km in width, has a couple of short hiking trails with captivating views.

- About Little Tobago
- How to Get There
Little Tobago, also known as Bird of Paradise Island, is located about 3 km (1.5 mi) off of the coast of the village of Speyside, Tobago. This mountainous little island was a cotton plantation in the late 1700s known for yielding more cotton per acre than anywhere else in Tobago.
After the collapse of the cotton industry in Tobago, the island was mostly abandoned until 1898 when Sir William Ingram purchased the island. He imported and introduced a colony of 24 pairs of Birds of Paradise ( Paradisaea apoda ) from Aru Island, New Guinea in 1909, where they stayed until 1963 when a hurricane wiped out much of the population (the last Bird of Paradise was seen in 1982). After Sir William passed away, his heirs returned the island to the Government of Trinidad and Tobago on the condition that it be maintained as a bird sanctuary.
Today it is the main nesting area for the Red-billed Tropicbird in Tobago, and one of the Caribbean’s important seabird sanctuaries.
The semi-deciduous forested island is full of rugged, picturesque scenery, vegetated with Latina Palms, Slippery Elms, and cacti.
All the boats coming to the island dock at a small beach facing mainland Tobago, from which several trails cut uphill to a gazebo offering gorgeous views of the island’s rocky coastline. The trails are relatively easy to trek and are great for observing birds and the other fauna of the island (like hermit crabs, anoles, and spiders).
Just up from the jetty sits a wooden structure slated to hold a museum at some point in the future:
Little Tobago has been a bird sanctuary ever since and is uninhabited except for one of the Caribbean’s largest seabird colonies, including impressive flocks of terns, boobies, frigatebirds, and tropicbirds.
More than 50 species of birds make the island their home, including Audubon’s Shearwaters, Brown Boobies, Red-footed Boobies, Brown Noddies, Laughing Gulls, Red-billed Tropicbirds, and Sooty Terns. Of these, approximately 30 species nest on the island.
One of the best places to view the seabirds who call Little Tobago home is from the overlook on top of the hill, which also has a little gazebo to shelter from the sun.
Other important birds include the Trinidad Motmot and Tobago Greenlet, two of Trinidad and Tobago’s endemic species.
Feral chickens brought to the island by the previous resident caretaker, who wasn’t able to round up his private flock before leaving the island, can also be spotted in the bush.
Most people visit the island as part of a glass-bottom boat tour, but birdwatchers can also arrange specialist tours with Tobago’s eco-oriented tour companies.
There are no facilities on Little Tobago, so bring water and snacks with you.
