Panama Luxury Vacations

With the world’s most famous canal as your go-between, Panama yields unrivaled rest and relaxation along both fascinating coastlines. Ecoadventure is the order of the day in these parts. The country’s mix of ecosystems throughout 50 parks and wildlife sanctuaries nets an extreme range of experiences, taking in lush rainforest and mangroves, Indigenous villages, mountain hikes, and swaths of palm-studded islands that are next to deserted.

Paddling through the mangroves yields an arresting realization that you are experiencing a place few people get the chance to see.

Panama City is the jewel of Central America, shiny and modern, with its nightlife and luxury boutique hotels conveniently concentrated in Casco Viejo, the oldest and now most chic part of town. Find rooftop cocktails, extraordinary dining, and cobblestoned-alley cafés, with music spilling from every square. While you’re strolling the Amador Causeway, plan for a pitstop at Biomuseo, a museum spotlighting the country’s natural history. A morning hike up Ancon Hill – before it gets too hot – will net you the best view of the city. In the Gulf of Panama, you can troll the Pacific coast’s tiny island rookeries, spotting cormorants, pelicans, blue-footed boobies, and more. In the Darien Jungle, villagers are eager to acquaint you with their traditional way of life – the same way they have been living for a century. Paddling through the mangroves yields an arresting realization that you are experiencing a place few people get the chance to see. On Panama’s Atlantic side, you can wander the historic remains of UNESCO-designated Spanish colonial ruins and snorkel the coral reefs of the Guna Yala Islands, each one picture-postcard perfect.

What is the most memorable vacation you have planned for a client? I planned a lady’s trip to Portugal, for 8 women all celebrating landmark birthdays. We had our own Benz van with a driver and picked up local guides in each area. It was a lot of fun to put together!

An explosion of wildlife, adventure, culture and relaxation

From swimming with turtles in translucent blue seas to trekking through some of the world’s best rainforests, roaming captivating cities to visiting one of the seven indigenous groups. Panama is an explosion of wildlife, adventure, culture and relaxation all on a narrow stretch of land.

Sitting as the narrowest point between North and South America and flanked by the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, Panama has long been a melting pot of cultures – even before the construction of its colossal canal. A pre-Columbian history through to the Spanish colonial era, along with influences from Africa, India, China, France and indigenous cultures, have led to one of the most fascinating and welcoming cultures in Central America.

The name Panama means ‘an abundance of fish and butterflies’ in the indigenous language and as home to the largest rainforest in the western hemisphere outside of the Amazon, it’s a concept visitors are quick to discover for themselves.

As a land surrounded by sea, the country is far from short of beaches, but some of its best lie on the numerous islands off the main land. The Gulf of Chiriqui marine park is also a great spot for whale watching.

Because of its unique geographical location and its famous canal, the country’s capital is a buzzing, sociable hub and is one of the most advanced cities in the region.

Being the financial hub of Latin America Panama City is a modern business epicenter. The competing skyscrapers dominate the horizon, you could easily mistake the capital’s skyline for one in the states. Excellent restaurants are popping up through the city making it the perfect base to see the canal, which is not to be missed. However what stuck me the most was that we could drive for a couple of hours out of the city, take a canoe ride and then reach the middle of the rainforest to meet the Embera Indians. It’s the clashing of two extreme worlds which makes Panama fascinating.

Panama is separated with two major seasons, the wet and dry. The dry season, between December and May is perfect for those visiting the pacific coast. The shoulder months of April and September through to November are very mild, yet rains are still common. The wet season, between May and August isn't recommended to visit.

Private Panama Luxury Tours

Combine a tour to Panama with a visit to Mexico, Costa Rica, or any other Central American country, for rewarding off-the-beaten-path experiences. Panama City, the capital and gateway to the country, is a buzzing modern metropolis and financial center. In contrast, its main attraction is the UNESCO listed neighborhood of Casco Viejo, or old quarter—a colorful collection of brick-lined alleys and buildings that hark back to Spanish colonial times. Here renovated boutique hotels, lovely churches, and structures in need of renovation hold equal charm, as do the many al fresco restaurants, trendy coffee shops, and lively jazz bars.

No trip to Panama can be complete without a visit to the world-famous Panama Canal, connecting the two great oceans on either side of the Americas. At this marvel of modern engineering you can watch ships pass through the Miraflores Locks, and learn about one of the most significant shipping passageways on Earth.

If you’re wondering whether that’s all Panama has on offer, talk to an Enchanting Travels expert who can familiarize you with this less frequented country. You’ll find that this is a tropical paradise with perfect weather for wearing that emblematic Panama hat on a relaxing beach vacation. Of the thousands of islands in Panama, the archipelagos of Bocas del Toro, San Blas, and Pearl Islands are some of the most gorgeous.

Panama has many more attractions. Ask us about other hidden gems too: Boquete in the Chiriqui highlands has some of the world’s best coffee plantations you can visit, and in the Gulf of Chiriqui marine park humpback whales can be spotted between July and September.

Easily accessible from Panama City, venture to the Gamboa rainforest area, an exquisite jungle that showcases the amazing biodiversity of this country. An aerial tram that rises above the canopy gives visitors a chance to spot some of the exotic wildlife that resides in these forests, while a boat ride on the Chagres River or Gatun Lake will add another dimension to your exploration of this unique land.

Our experts can advise you on the  best time of the year to visit Panama , recommend activities based on your interests, and craft a personalized experience for you. Get in touch with us today for your obligation-free itinerary.

Panama is a colorful blend of cosmopolitan city and nightlife, jungle, pristine beaches and islands, and so much more! Best Time To Visit Panama

Frequently asked questions.

The cost of a luxury travel vacation to Panama depends on the duration of your trip, the destinations you visit, and the activities you wish to do.  Our Panama tours start from $4,000 per person and they include all accommodations, travel services and excursions, except for international flights. Each itinerary can be tailored to your requirements – whether you wish to explore the old town of Panama viejo, see the iconic Panama Canal, surf in the Pacific Ocean, or combine your trip with other countries in South America. Get in touch with our travel consultants through our booking form or call + 1 888 263 2574 .

The number of days required for a Panama luxury tour depends on your destinations and interests. We recommend at least seven days to explore highlights such as the Panama Canal, the capital city’s vibrant neighborhoods, and the tropical paradise of Bocas del Toro. If you wish to combine your trip with another destination in South America such as Colombia or the Galapagos, plan for 10 days or more.  Our  sample itineraries  offer an overview on what you can do in Panama and each trip can be tailored to match your interests and travel dates. Get in touch with us at + 1 888 263 2574 for an obligation-free custom itinerary.

The weather in Panama differs by region and of course, season. Located just 9° north of the equator, the country has a tropical climate with a dry season from mid-December to mid-April and a wet, rainy season, from May to November. Rainfall during the afternoons is common during the wet season, contributing to verdant landscapes at all times of the year.  Coastal areas in Panama experience high humidity with average temperatures of 80-90°F nearly all year round. In general, the Caribbean coast experiences more rainfall than the Pacific coast.

The best time of the year to visit Panama is during the dry months of mid-December to mid-April, when the weather is pleasant with very little rainfall. This is an ideal time to explore the outdoors and plan for beach vacations. December is an especially great time to visit Panama thanks to festive holiday events. However, if you wish to visit in December, we recommend booking well in advance to have your choice of accommodations.  Travelers looking for lush green landscapes and wildlife can consider the wet season, from May to November, but should be prepared for heavy rainfall in the afternoons.  Read more about the  best time to visit Panama  from our destination experts.

Yes! Panama is a great place to vacation. It offers a diverse range of attractions, from the Panama Canal to rainforests, beaches and vibrant Panama City. Most Popular Panama Trips & Tours

A Southern Explorations representative will meet you when you arrive at Panama City's Tocumen International Airport and transfer you to your hotel.

After your arrival you’ll take a tour of Panama City and the Miraflores Locks. You will start the tour with a 30 minute drive to Miraflores to see the huge vessels passing the Panama Canal. The busiest hours are from 9am to 10am and from 2pm to 5pm, so you will be able to see many ships getting lifted or lowered 16 meters in two distinct steps. You will enjoy the view on the Locks from a sheltered terrace and listen to the explanations of your guide. To complete the visit of the Canal you will visit the Museum and Visitor Center at Miraflores which gives you a good idea on the construction of the Canal – a masterpiece of engineering. You will also learn about the history of the canal and its significance for Panama and the entire world trade as well as on the current expansion project. After the visit to the Canal you continue with your guide to the Amador Causeway, a road that connects three Islands in the Pacific Ocean and offers magnificent views on the Canal on one side and on the skyline of Panama City on the other side. The tour continues to the Casco Viejo, Panama City’s colonial quarter. At the Casco Viejo you feel set back in time as you admire the lovely colonial houses, the narrow roads and the impressive churches. You will get a good idea about Panama’s history by driving or walking through the main attractions of this quarter. (B,L)

Today you'll be free to enjoy the capital and environs at your leisure. Many optional tours of the vicinity are available upon request. To name a few: Hike through a nearby rainforest or take a boat tour on Gatun Lake. Visit Portobelo, once a critical Spanish port and today a sleepy seaside town where scuba enthusiasts on Panama vacations enjoy easily-accessible dive sites. Sir Francis Drake is supposedly buried at sea off the coast here. Go biking or hiking on Isla Grande, located on the Caribbean Coast. You will spend another evening at your Panama City hotel. (B)

Just after picking you up at your Panama City hotel, your guide will take you to Ancon Hill, a steep 654-foot hill which overlooks Panama City. On a short walk you will climb the top and enjoy the stunning view down on Panama City’s old town, the modern city, the port of Balboa and Panama Canal. The hill was under U.S. jurisdiction as part of the Panama Canal Zone for much of the 20th century and therefore was never developed like most of the surrounding urbanized parts of the city. As a result, it became a kind of an “island” of jungle in an urban area, where wildlife still survives cut off from other jungle areas. It is not uncommon to see sloths, white-nosed coati, nine-banded armadillos, Geoffroy’s tamarins or deer on Ancon Hill. After enjoying the view from Ancon Hill, you will continue with your guide to El Valle de Anton. El Valle de Anton or Anton Valley is famous for its market featuring handcrafts, fresh fruits, vegetables and beautiful native plants such as orchids and bougainvilleas. El Valle, emerged from an extinct huge volcano crater; features several picturesque small towns and a moderate and spring-like climate. In El Valle you will visit the market and then continue to La Casa de Lourdes, a must visit gourmet restaurant, for lunch. Here you will enjoy the delicious cuisine of Chef Lourdes Fábrega de Ward. Her food features updated takes on standard Panamanian fare, blended with other Latin American influences. Chef Lourdes Fábrega de Ward studied with Martha Stewart and Paul Prudhomme, and her well-honed flair and technique is evident in every dish she prepares. After lunch, your guide will take you to JW Marriot Hotel at Playa Blanca, your luxury accommodations for the next two days. (B,L)

Spend these two days enjoying the many amenities of your luxury hotel. Relax by the pool, book a spa treatment, play a few rounds of golf, or customize your vacation with an optional day tour. Overnight at JW Marriott Panama Golf & Beach Resort. (B)

Enjoy the morning at leisure before your private transfer back to Panama City for one last night in the capital. (B)

A Southern Explorations driver will transfer you from your hotel to Tocumen International Airport for your flight home. (B)

Seasons in Panama: Rainy Season & Dry Season In Panama seasons are not as much defined by drastic changes in temperature; rather, they are determined by the amount of rainfall. The Panama dry season, December through April, or what is known in Panama as "summer", tends to be much sunnier and drier. The rainy season in Panama, May through November, in has more rainfall in the mornings and then tends to dissipate in the afternoons to blue sky. Lower temperatures during these months can be expected in Panama. Panama's Dry Season is not always dry and the rainy season is not necessarily rainy and wet all the time. Panama is a tropical country where the rains and sunshine intermingle. During the rainy season, mornings are generally very bright and sunny and afternoon rain showers are common every day. Panama Tropics: The country's climate is characterized by heavy rain that does not normally last long, or more constant rainfall lasting all night (or all day) long. Temperature changes are mostly determined by altitude rather than by season or amount of rainfall. The weather is, on the whole, quiet unpredictable. Humidity: Panama is a very humid country. In some regions relative humidity can reach 90% (especially on the Atlantic coast). The North Pacific is less humid, but the entire Caribbean coast is quite damp.

Our trip to Panama exceeded all our expectations. Jonathan and everyone at Southern Explorations is a pleasure to work with. They listened to what we wanted to do and customized our trip. From start to finish it was a great trip, Panama surprised us, it was much more beautiful and exciting then we had imagined. Seven years ago they planned at vacation to Ecuador and Galapagos for us, a trip of a lifetime, it was amazing and we were blown away by the level of detail, the guides, transportation, all planned and timed to perfection. We didn't think they could impress us again when we set off for Panama but we were wrong. Thank you Southern Explorations for another exceptional vacation. - Denise and David Nardie (Panama)

Thanks so much for planning this wonderful trip for us. I cannot stress how much we enjoyed ourselves. The variety and pace were perfect. We had no idea that Panama would wow us quite the way it did. Kudos to the Southern Explorations team for introducing us to such an amazing country. We are very appreciative.   - Tanya & Pierre, Canada (Panama)

I found the staff very helpful that I dealt with, primarily Jonathan. I think the itinerary of Panama City, Boquette and Bocas is a great introduction for first time travelers to Panama.” - Grant Kvalheim, New Jersey (Panama)

An Ultra-exclusive Resort Has Opened Off the Coast of Panama — and You'll Feel Like You've Been Marooned on a Tropical Island

In a good way.

luxury travel in panama

The Gulf of Chiriquí, a wild, volcanic stretch of Panama's Pacific shoreline, was once known as the Lost Coast. Pirate ships ran aground here; ruthless buccaneers stole charts of the area from one another, eager to plunder its natural riches.

As my family and I boarded a little barge bound for the gulf, it seemed as if we, too, were entering unknown territory. Chugging down the delta of the Chiriquí River, evidence of human habitation became increasingly scarce — a few cows here, a wooden kayak there. Barú, Panama's largest volcano, loomed out of the haze and was promptly swallowed up again. Then we hit the ocean and stared at a blank horizon as high winds buffeted our boat, limiting conversation to the occasional shout.

Over the roar of the engine, our guide, a towering Liverpudlian named Rob Jameson, explained that sailors lost in these seas used to scan the skies for flocks of magnificent frigate birds as a sign that they were nearing the safety of shore. An hour or so after we set off, there they were: hundreds of the birds, wingspans yards wide, swirling high above a dot of jungle-clad land—the outermost in an archipelago of 14 untrodden islands named Islas Secas.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel a profound sense of relief.

My husband, David, and I were on our way to Panama's newest high-end resort, Islas Secas Reserve & Lodge , with our 18-month-old son, Leo, and our four-year-old daughter, Stella. David and I are both fairly seasoned travelers, but since Leo's birth, our ambitions had shrunk considerably. When Stella was little, we dragged her off to Cuba , India , Mexico , and Morocco ; with two in tow, we'd been spending a lot more time in Florida. So Panama was to be a test case. Were we ready to trade in the kitchenette and the kids' club for a taste of real adventure?

The captain cut the engine and we coasted, ears ringing in the sudden silence, toward a jetty sticking out from a palm-fringed cove. Though technically a private island resort, Islas Secas has more in common with a safari lodge: the luxury is in having exclusive, up-close access to nature rather than lavish amenities or flashy design. As we stepped onto the mile-wide main island of Isla Cavada, there was no show-stopping architecture or blingy beach cabanas in sight. Instead, we could just make out the resort's nine casitas poking above a tangle of frangipani trees.

"We're out there, man, we're off the grid," resort developer Jim Matlock said. "Take a look on Google Maps and you'll see how remote this place is." Matlock and his wife, Christy, raised two children — along with a mutt named Daisy — on Isla Cavada after moving from California 15 years ago and working at the eco-resort that preceded Islas Secas. Bringing up a family here wasn't without its challenges, the couple admitted. But as our kids chased Daisy up and down the bamboo jetty, delighted squeals ringing out across the glassy, jade-green bay, we started to get a sense of what had made it all worthwhile.

Over the next few days, we sampled the Matlocks' Swiss Family Robinson–style existence in all its sunbaked, barefoot glory. We took boat rides to uninhabited islands, dolphins cresting the waves alongside us. We picnicked on crescents of creamy sand so quiet we could hear the creaking of hermit crabs emerging from their shells. We took walks through the jungle, stumbling upon freakishly shaped fungi and a giant termites' nest. Most exciting of all, we hiked to a cliff-top lookout where we watched the ocean booming through a blowhole some 50 feet below, just as an apricot sun slipped under the horizon.

Like many properties of its kind, the current version of Islas Secas owes its existence to one man. A few years ago, an American hedge fund manager and philanthropist named Louis Bacon fell for the archipelago while on a sailing trip around the Gulf of Chiriquí. Learning that the islands were up for sale, Bacon added them to a portfolio of conservation projects that runs from Alaska to the Bahamas.

Related : The Unexpected Trip Animal Lovers Need to Add to Their Lists

His dream was to create a place where guests could enjoy exclusive access to the extraordinary natural riches of the region. And they are pretty extraordinary. The Pacific waters teem with giant manta and eagle rays, sea turtles, sharks , and schools of kaleidoscopic tropical fish. Pods of humpback whales pass on their annual migration north in late summer and return in winter.

Conservation is a crucial part of the project. Under an agreement with the Panamanian government, only a quarter of the archipelago has been developed — the rest will remain untouched. Every element of the lodge is low-impact, from the soaring bamboo structures that house the lobby and restaurant to the reclaimed wood used to build the elegant guest rooms. All water is recycled after being run through the island's filtration system, while energy is generated by a 1,000-foot phalanx of solar panels lined up along the airstrip.

Though Bacon's principles were no doubt lost on Leo and Stella, the untamed world he has created at Islas Secas was not. David and I had worried about how they would manage with no playground visits and no iPads , forgetting that these things are stand-ins for real adventure — for chasing a hummingbird around a tree, collecting tiny shells along a beach, or stalking fluorescent-green iguanas through the undergrowth. After three nights on the island, our kids were the happiest we'd seen them' and so, as a consequence, were we.

On our last day at the lodge, we noticed black clouds gathering as we returned by boat from an excursion around the islands. Fat drops of rain pelted the jetty as I grabbed Leo and we all ran, shrieking in our swimsuits, back up the steep forest path to our villa. From our private deck with its 180-degree views of the other islands, we watched the storm roll through. Around us were no lights, no man-made structures; it felt like we were the last four people left in the world. And sometimes, in certain places, that's the very best feeling you can have.

Luxury Latin America

Luxury Travel in Panama

Panama is the land bridge between North America and South America and the waterway between the Atlantic and the Pacific. Unfortunately, the Panama Canal is about the only thing most foreigners think of when they hear about Panama tourism. While the aggressive tourism offices in Costa Rica and Belize were tapping into the great travel industry machine over the past several decades, the Panamanian tourism folks were taking a siesta. The country has been better known as a retirement spot than a luxury vacation destination.

The funny thing is, Panama has almost as much to offer as Costa Rica when it comes to natural attractions, but at prices that are noticeably lower. Almost 30 percent of the land is protected as national parks, and wildlife sanctuaries. More than 900 species of birds, 220 species of mammals and more than 350 kinds of reptiles and amphibians call Panama home. The offshore area has hundreds of islands and protected coral reefs, with world–class fishing, great scuba diving, and endless snorkeling spots.

Luxury Panama City

Bustling Panama City has become the Miami of Latin America, an international banking center with a cosmopolitan population. It contains most of the Panama luxury hotels , from from local upscale spots like The Bristol to chains like Waldorf-Astoria. The region around Boquete has been attracting both retirees and adventure seekers for a couple decades now. The Bocas del Toro archipelago is the place to go for fishing, diving, and hidden beaches.

Because of the long U.S. presence in Panama, it is relatively easy to get by with English in tourist areas. The U.S. dollar has been the Panamanian currency since 1903, so there's no need to change money or do currency calculations in your head.

Panama won't stay undiscovered forever and it is quickly emerging as a luxury travel destination for those looking to experience something different. The situation is rapidly improving for upscale business and leisure travelers as the economy keeps booming. For now most of the top Panama luxury hotels and tours are in and around the capital, but this is gradually changing each year as the visitor numbers keep rising, along with the number of foreign retirees and wealthy investors from other Latin American countries. With luxury condos going up, attractive retirement incentives in place, and a continuing stream of upscale resorts on the horizon, Panama won't stay under the radar forever. See it now.

BOQUETE HIGHLANDS & ISLA PALENQUE EXPERIENCE

"superb planning and help for a family trip in panama".

We had an excellent experience with Pierre and his team at Costa Adventures. The logistics for our group of ten were seamless for the entire trip. We were most impressed with how responsive the team was when an issue arose during the trip (as a result of our own mistake). We left our laptop in our island villa and as soon as we notified Costa Adventures, they were able to get in touch with the resort,...

Panama City | Chitre

Day 1 | panama city.

Arrival to Panama City. Pick up at the airport by the guide who will help with the transfer to the Hotel about 25 minutes away. The bilingual guide will also provide important information regarding the rest of trip. Overnight stay at the Hotel Hilton.

DAY 2 | FULL DAY MIRAFLORES LOCKS & PANAMA VIEW w/LUNCH

After breakfast at the hotel the tour starts at the Panama Canal, a magnificent work of engineering, actually the greatest and most expensive human feat of the time. After 30/40 minutes of route, you will reach the Visitor Center of Miraflores Locks, from which you will be able to see closely the ships moving along the canal, and the way it operates. Forthwith, you will visit the Amador Causeway, which offers one of the city’s most spectacular panoramic views. Afterwards, you will make a brief visit at Mercado de Abasto [wholesale marketplace], the city’s largest fruit and vegetable market, where you will find the best products of the country. Lunch will be served in one of the unsophisticated and typical restaurants of the traditional Seafood Market of the city (only fish dishes are offered). The tour continues in the Old Quarter of Panama City, the historic center of San Felipe declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997, thanks to its eclectic fusion of colonial, neoclassic and French architecture. This stop includes a walk in the streets, squares and gravel roads and a visit of emblematic colonial buildings, churches and palaces. The tour ends at the Executive Mansion (entrance is not guaranteed), known as Palacio de las Garzas, and famous for maintaining intact the Salón Amarillo [Yellow Hall] and the Salón de los Tamarindos where the most famous murals of Roberto Lewis representing the history and culture of the country are visible right over there. Overnight stay at the Hotel Hilton.

DAY 3 | FULL DAY VISIT EMBERÁ QUERA NATIVE COMMUNITY

After breakfast, the tour starts with a transfer of approximately one hour to the little pier of Gatún River, few minutes away from Buena Vista, where you will board a pirogue, a motor canoe, to arrive to the community of Emberá Quera, located at Gatún River’s mouth. During the journey of approximately forty minutes, you will be able to see in detail the splendid jungle and if you are lucky, its monkeys, butterflies, herons and turtles. Upon your arrival, you will be received by the Indian Chief of the community who will tell you the history of the Tribe and its cultural wealth and that of its traditions. The Emberá are native of the Darién, who in turn come from the Chocò, Colombia. They live at the edge of the river in little communities of thatch‐roofed palafittes named tambos, for counteracting humidity and avoiding floods. Men dedicate themselves to manufacture the famous pirogues, canoes made by shaping logs, used to navigate even during the dry season. Women, as for them, make splendid baskets, plates and masks out of vegetal fiber and delicate knitting. They wear collars known as chaquiras that are made out of old silver coins. All the members of the community use the genipa juice to paint their bodies with geometric designs; apparently, that works very well as repellent and has healing properties. The visit to the community will finish and you will go over a little island inhabited by monkeys. Afterwards, a typical lunch will be served to you and you will enjoy a folkloric show with traditional music and dances. Overnight stay at the Hotel Hilton.

DAY 4 | PANAMA CITY – CHITRE

After breakfast at the Hotel, private transfer to Albrook National Airport, pick up at the airport of Chitré for transfer to Cubita Boutique Hotel & Resort.

In the afternoon, visit San Isidro Farm in half a day, where the best rum of Panama is produced, Ron Abuelo. The route starts with the visit to an ancient colonial house belonging to the distillery’s founder, Mr. José Varela; one of the several young immigrants who came from Spain in 1906 and established the first Panamanian sugar mill at the fertile valley of Pesé which is an optimum one to grow sugarcane. In 1936, he began to distill the sugarcane juice in order to produce liquors. Since then, his passion, dedication and experience have been passed down through three generations which have insisted on keeping the tradition, always using the best ingredients and carrying out the aging process while respecting the refining process time of this famous rum. The route continues along the plantations and at the farm mill where you will see the different stages of the production process. Firstly, you will see the juice extraction, then, its fermentation and its distillation. Later on, while going over the farm’s seedy bars, you will see the rum maturing process which is done in little oak casks until it reaches different standards that are commercialized: Ron Abuelo Añejo, Ron Abuelo 7‐Year‐Old Rum and Ron Abuelo 12‐Year‐Old Rum, and Ron Abuelo Centuria that is aged up to 30 years. At the end of the route, you will taste some types of rums through which you will sense their scent, aroma and intensity and you will also enjoy a typical Panamanian lunch during the tour.

Overnight stay at the Cubitá Boutique Resort & Spa

DAY 5| FULL DAY ISLA IGUANA

After breakfast at the Hotel, go over Isla Iguana during the entire day. The tour starts with the transfer service to Playa El Arenal, located in the colorful small town of Pedasí where you will board a powerboat, which will take you to Isla Iguana, eight kilometers away from the coast. In 1981, The Isla Iguana Wildlife Refuge was created for the purpose of protecting fifty hectares of sea and land territory. The island is the habitat of a vast colony of man‐of‐war birds, pelicans, woodcocks, very colorful crabs and green iguanas. Between April and September, five species of sea turtles arrive to the beachside in order to deposit their eggs. The island is a real paradise for sea lovers. It has white‐sand beaches, crystalline waters and sixteen hectares of barrier reef protecting seventeen species of corals and more than 350 species of tropical fish. You will go on a walk along the pathway joining the beaches of El Faro and El Cirial where you will have regard for their lush flora and fauna. Immediately afterwards, you will discover the wonderful submarine world by exploring the area in a guided snorkeling tour. You will have a snack (water, a sandwich and biscuits) during the tour and you will have some relaxing time at the beach. Later on, you will go back to Pedasí where you will have lunch and you will finally be transferred to the hotel. Overnight stay.

DAY 6 | HALF DAY SEA TURTLE WATCHING ECO TOUR BY NIGHT WITH DINNER

Breakfast at the hotel. The tour starts in the afternoon with the shuttle service to the Cañas pier where you will board a powerboat which will take you to Isla Cañas. From July to January, its fourteen kilometers [8.6992 miles] of seashore receive thousands of turtles, predominantly, olive ridley sea turtles that arrive to deposit their eggs. An interesting sustainable tourist project is being undertaken in the island. It arose after turtle’s eggs production and commercialization for human consumption were forbidden; that represented, along with fishing, the sole income source of the local population. Upon your arrival to the island, dinner will be served, prepared by local ladies. Afterwards, aboard a cart pulled by horses, you will reach the beach where you will see in detail turtles depositing their eggs or turtles coming out of their shells. You should pay close attention to the guide’s indications to disturb the turtles as little as possible. Finally, return to the Hotel. Overnight stay.

Panama City (2 nights)

Following your arrival into Panama City airport, there’s a 30-minute transfer to your hotel in the Casco Viejo (Old Quarter). Settled in 1673, the Casco Viejo was built following the near-total destruction of the original Panamá city (Panamá Viejo) in 1671, when the latter was attacked by pirates. It was designated a World Heritage Site in 1997. Your luxury Panama tour will start here as you explore these quaint streets with an expert guide. In the evening, dine in a trendy Panamanian restaurant in the Casco Viejo.

The following morning, visit the innovative biodiversity museum designed by “starchitect” Frank Gehry. The colorful origami-like canopies were inspired by Panama’s diverse flora and fauna, as Panama is among the world’s most biodiverse countries.

In the afternoon, your private tour will focus on the Panama Canal. You’ll get a hands-on feel for the canal’s history, economic importance and engineering brilliance. Begin with the canal’s head administrative building and the old barracks where American workers used to live. Then, enjoy a VIP tour of the canal at the Miraflores Lock. You’ll have exclusive access to view the ships up close as they change levels via the locks, making their journey from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

San Blas Islands (3 nights)

Continue your luxury Panama tour in style with a 30-minute private flight to a remote landing strip, followed by a transfer to a luxury catamaran to start your private San Blas Islands sailing experience.

The San Blas Islands are what dreams are made of: white sand beaches, swaying palm trees, pristine coral reefs, and azure waters. This is the perfect place to get away from it all.

Spend your days admiring the tranquility of these picture-postcard locations. Swim in the crystal clear water, take the kayaks out, fish for Barracuda for your evening dinners, and learn about the culture of the native Guna people.

While embarking on your sailing tour around the islands, your highly experienced captain will reveal some of the hidden treasures found in this idyllic archipelago, including Cayos Holandes and Coco Bandero

While exploring the archipelago, an attentive crew will assist with your every need. Enjoy meals prepared at your service: fresh fish, octopus or lobster bought from local fisherman you’ve passed by as you wind through the islands.

In the late afternoons, relax with a glass of champagne and then end your days with some of the world’s best stargazing from your spectacularly remote position in the San Blas Islands.

12 best Panama Canal cruises for a bucket-list trip

Donna Heiderstadt

A Panama Canal transit is a rite of passage for many cruise lovers. Experiencing this marvel of early 20th-century engineering appeals to those with a wide array of interests, from history and politics to colonial architecture and wildlife. Built by the U.S. government between 1903 and 1914, this 50-mile waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans revolutionized shipping by creating an expedited route for the transit of cargo and, ultimately, cruise ship passengers.

Panama Canal itineraries are offered by almost every cruise line. Thanks to a 2016 canal expansion project, a third set of locks can now accommodate larger vessels. It's possible to cruise the Panama Canal on ships of all sizes (from 148 guests to more than 3,000) on itineraries that range from a week in the sun to a six-month world cruise.

Some ships sail a full transit of the canal, from the Atlantic to the Pacific or vice versa. These one-way journeys between Miami or Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles or San Diego visit ports in Central America, South America, Mexico and California.

Others sail only a partial transit, entering the locks from the Atlantic and cruising into Lake Gatun before turning around and exiting again. These itineraries, sailing round-trip from Florida ports, combine the canal experience with island hopping in the Caribbean.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

The array of options means that a Panama Canal cruise experience is possible even if you're short on time or have a limited budget — and chances are high that your favorite cruise line offers one or more itineraries. Most sailings attract couples, typically retirees, but if the timing is right, a Panama Canal cruise can also be a great multigenerational experience.

Here are a dozen of the best Panama Canal cruises to consider.

Holland America's 14- to 17-night Panama Canal cruises

luxury travel in panama

Holland America offers a variety of Panama Canal cruises , but the most popular itineraries span 14 to 17 nights. They offer a full transit between Fort Lauderdale or Miami and San Diego, Seattle or Vancouver, British Columbia, or vice versa and are offered on multiple ships, including Koningsdam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam, Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam. These sailings call on Cartagena, Colombia; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; and Huatulco and Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Longer sailings also call on several Caribbean islands.

Who should go : Holland America ships sailing a full transit are popular with retired couples who appreciate the cruise line's consistency and good value. All four ships accommodate between 1,432 and 2,650 passengers and offer signature onboard experiences that include the Greenhouse Spa and the World Stage for evening production shows. The larger Eurodam, Koningsdam and Nieuw Amsterdam feature additional specialty dining options, such as Tamarind and Nami Sushi, as well as popular music venues B.B. King's Blues Club and Billboard Onboard.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' 16-night Los Angeles-to-Miami cruise

Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' newest ship, Seven Seas Grandeur, debuted in November 2023 and will transit the Panama Canal on several occasions in the next few years. The 16-night Miami-to-Los Angeles (Dec. 13-29, 2024) and 16-night Los Angeles-to-Miami (Jan. 8-23, 2025) transits offer luxurious all-inclusive pampering, plus port calls in Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas and Acapulco, Mexico; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Corinto, Nicaragua; Panama City; Cartagena, Colombia; and George Town, Grand Cayman.

Plan even further ahead for Grandeur's 22-night Miami-to-Los Angeles transit (Jan. 3-25, 2026) to enjoy additional Caribbean ports of call. From Jan. 25 to Feb. 9, 2026, the ship will sail a 16-night Panama Canal transit from Los Angeles to Miami with an itinerary similar to the 2024 and early 2025 cruises.

Who should go : This itinerary can be a wonderful splurge for a couple seeking to celebrate a milestone anniversary or birthday in a memorable way on a luxurious new ship. Prices start at a hefty $10,099 per person for a spacious balcony suite, but they also include airfare, transfers, gratuities, dining and beverages, Wi-Fi and shore excursions — meaning you'll hardly have any other vacation expenses.

Wind Star and Wind Spirit are cozy and social four-deck ships, each featuring a pool and pool bar, a lounge and two restaurants. Panama: A Unique Travel Destination That Has It All

Panama stands apart from all the places you could visit. Not only does it connect two continents, but it also offers a mix of amazing nature and interesting culture. I had the opportunity to visit different cities in Panama as a tourist, and there is no other country where I feel more welcome. Panama is one of the only countries on the American continents whose economy has always been based on tourism and the service sector, so it is part of their culture to make foreigners feel welcome. Three places that are top in my opinion are Rio Hato, Panama City, and Isla San Blas.

Rio Hato is one of the most unique places I have ever visited because I was able to enjoy the beach in the afternoon and go hiking around the volcano in the morning. Just two hours from Panama City airport. Driving is recommended for three reasons: you’ll see beautiful scenery, try authentic food, and connect with locals. Rio Hato is the ideal destination for those who are unsure whether they want an adventurous or peaceful vacation. Also, this place is very budget friendly. Rio Hato is home to a variety of hotels and resorts, some of which are all-inclusive, meaning you don’t have to leave the hotel because they offer nightclubs, children’s performances, a variety of restaurants, and adventure packages for a low cost. Some of the resorts I have stayed at with my family that I recommend are Royal Decameron, Hotel Riu Playa Blanca, and Red Frog Beach Island. Rio Hato is ideal since it is so diverse that you don’t feel the need to adjust to the surroundings because they adapt to your needs.

Panama City is a beautiful city that doesn’t have anything to envy about other first-world cities. Tourists like the city because there is a balance between learning about the history behind the country and being able to enjoy the modernity that it has to offer. Panama City has one of the most iconic engineering marvels in the world, the Panama Canal, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Panama City’s population has been diverse since they started building the canal. A lot of the workers were foreigners, and a large percentage of the population is bilingual, so there is not much of a language barrier. If I were to give you a recommendation, it would be to buy a package that takes you to Panama Viejo and the Panama Canal. Personally, these are the two attractions I recommend the most if you are going for a short period of time.

The San Blas Islands are known for their clear water, awesome beaches, and lots of green trees and plants. Islas San Blas is home to the indigenous Guna people; the islands showcase vibrant culture and tradition through colorful huts and textiles. You can do fun stuff like swimming, chilling on the beach, and learning cool things about Guna culture. It’s a calm and peaceful place where you can enjoy nature and learn new stuff. Isla San Blas gives you the opportunity to choose between staying in your hotel and enjoying their amenities or going on adventures and trying to immerse yourself in the Guna culture.

Panama is a wonderful place to visit because it has a bit of everything: beautiful beaches, fascinating culture, and friendly people. Rio Hato is great if you want both beach time and adventure, while Panama City offers a mix of history and modern life, with must-see spots like the Panama Canal. And then there are the San Blas Islands, known for their stunning beaches and the chance to learn about the indigenous Guna culture. No matter where you go in Panama, you’re sure to have an amazing time exploring and enjoying the welcoming atmosphere.

Oakland County judge's trainings in Dubai, South Africa, Panama covered by public money

luxury travel in panama

Most every job requires more training these days, and that includes being a judge. New rules in Michigan require that judges take at least 24 hours of “continuing judicial education” every two years.

The new training is on the internet so judges don’t need to leave their courthouses. And it’s free. But some who wear judicial robes may wish to keep visiting distant locales for costly professional conferences, as they’ve quietly been doing for years.

Take the Honorable Debra Nance, a district judge in Southfield. According to expense records obtained by the Free Press, Nance in January traveled to a 10-day professional conference, one that’s not required by the state of Michigan, in the African nation of Ghana — more than 5,000 miles from Detroit. The cost? More than $4,800, all of it covered by Nance’s employer, the 46th District Court.

Last year, Nance traveled to a conference in Dubai, a city of luxury hotels in the United Arab Emirates, more than 7,000 miles from Detroit. That tab? Over $4,600. In previous years, Nance traveled to judicial conferences in Panama, the Dominican Republic and South Africa, each trip costing thousands of dollars, and each charged to the court’s budget, according to expense records obtained by the Free Press.

So, how might flying to Africa improve Nance’s ability to administer justice? Documents obtained by the Free Press show that two seminars were held at the lengthy conference in Ghana. One was called “Comparative Law: Commonalities & Differences between U.S. & Ghahaian Law.” The other was “Domestic Violence at Home and Abroad.” It may seem odd that a district judge in Michigan, who is often focused on driving violations and landlord-tenant cases, would need training in the legal systems of foreign nations.

Traveling jurists

Luxury travel for judges has come under scrutiny at the nation’s highest level. That happened with news coverage of the lack of oversight for U.S. Supreme Court justices. The spotlight for much of that coverage fell on Justice Clarence Thomas who, reporters revealed, had for decades taken luxury vacations as the guest of a real-estate billionaire. Thomas’ trips, while inviting conflicts of interest, occurred at no public cost. Neither did they involve training or professional networking. As well, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was outed for being a hedge-fund billionaire’s guest on an Alaskan fishing trip that ProPublica reporters estimated would’ve cost well over $100,000, had Alito paid his way. Alito neither disclosed the trip on his annual financial disclosures to the court nor did he recuse himself from voting several years later in favor of the hedge fund boss, in a case that came before the court and ultimately brought a payment of $2.4 billion to the hedge fund.

In Michigan, Nance isn't the only judge taking trips at public expense. In a yearlong investigation, the Free Press requested records for travel expenses at numerous courthouses in Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties, in circuit as well as district courts. The investigation found that, although most judges seek modest reimbursements for traveling to conferences and training sites, a handful in metro Detroit have charged costly trips to their courthouse budgets.

I n 2019, Oakland Circuit Judge Denise Langford-Morris, who has since retired, attended a convention of lawyers and judges in New York City for $1,940.26. In the same year, Macomb County Circuit Judge Joseph Toia attended a conference of the National Association of Drug Court Personnel in Nashville, Tennessee for $1,634.54. And although travel expenses in many courthouses dropped during and after the pandemic, there are other examples.

Still, among judges in metro Detroit, the Free Press found that Southfield’s courthouse was the biggest and most consistent spender of public dollars on travel, and Nance was the main traveler. Because courts are funded from various revenue streams, it’s not possible to say that Nance’s trips were entirely covered by taxpayer dollars. It is possible to say, however, that they were covered by public money — taxpayer dollars along with the fines and costs paid by members of the public, such as motorists paying traffic tickets and defendants paying criminal fines and court costs. About two-thirds of the annual budget of 46 th District Court is covered by fines and court costs paid by the public.

In other words, when Nance imposes fines and costs on defendants, she knows she is bringing revenue to the court. The rest of the revenue to fund the courthouse comes from Southfield’s taxpayers, an amount that recently has totaled more than $1.6 million per year, according to budget figures provided by the Southfield city fiscal director. The cost of the trips irks Southfield Mayor Ken Siver.

“The taxpayers of Southfield are not only paying for the court’s expenses. We’re paying for Nance’s trips. And her trips are not approved by the city, but we still have to cover them,” Siver said. Nance’s travel expenses need only the signed approval of the court’s chief judge, according to the court’s expense records.

Siver continued: “I’ve made a stink about this every year at budget time. Our city administrator has talked to the court administrator and the chief judge on it, but as long as the money flows, they don’t care.”

No rule prohibiting travel

During a visit to Nance’s courtroom in late March, a Free Press reporter asked Nance what she felt she gained from her overseas trips, either personally or professionally. She said she had no comment. Nance’s supervisor, Chief Judge Shelia Johnson, who approved Nance’s trips, defended them.

“I think the trips for Judge Nance come under the category of judicial education,” Johnson said in a telephone interview.

“There is no rule that says this has to be in the state of Michigan. As long as you’re taking conferences that relate to judicial education, it’s justified and I would encourage that."

Nance's costly trips were organized by the National Bar Association, a nationwide group of mainly African American lawyers and judges. This year, the NBA scheduled three big trips for judges and lawyers: a 16-day one scheduled in May to the French Riviera and Barcelona, Spain; a weeklong annual meeting at a luxury Las Vegas hotel in July, and earlier this year, the 10-day African trip to Ghana that Nance attended in January.

Asked about traveling to Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean for lengthy trips whose agendas show they are primarily about sightseeing and resort vacationing, Johnson was politely insistent that such trips were fine with her. The overseas trips give participants “an emphasis on comparing judicial practices from country to country,” and they can provide “a broad perspective that does help you in your day-to-day work as a judge," she said.

Regarding the educational value of Johnson’s own trip, to New Orleans in 2018, for which she charged the courthouse $1,788.36, she said: “I can’t remember. That’s so long ago. I could look it up in my records and see what the seminars covered.”

She concluded: “It sounds like people want to embarrass judges for traveling to these conferences. ... These things keep you engaged as a judge.”

It’s Johnson’s signature that appears on Nance’s expense reports, approving her reimbursement for attending overseas conferences, which are listed as “City of Southfield Business Travel Expense.” On the forms, above Johnson’s signature, are these words: “I hereby certify that the travel indicated hereon was accomplished according to proper authorization, that the information is correct, and that no part of the compensation claimed was of a personal nature.”

Networking and education

The National Bar Association calls itself “the nation’s oldest and largest global network of predominantly Black American attorneys and judges.” It was founded in 1925 because Black lawyers were being denied membership in the all-white American Bar Association, according to online histories. The group provides scholarships for Black law students and helps them land internships at the start of their careers, according to the group’s website. As for the sponsored trips, online agendas show that many are mainly about networking and the theme “Relax, Rejuvenate and Explore.”

Asked to comment on its trips, NBA officials declined to return email and phone messages left by the Free Press at their offices in Washington, D.C. But the president of the NBA's affiliate group in Michigan, the Wolverine Bar Association, said the group is known for its educational trips as well as for aiding Black law students who seek internships and tutoring.

The NBA offers numerous credits in continuing legal education "at various conferences around the United States and overseas as well," said Diane Hutcherson, who is staff counsel to the Auto Club Insurance Association, known as AAA. Hutcherson said that, as a single parent, she had been unable to participate in overseas trips, but she said "there are many people who have and they're generally able to avail themselves of networking and educational opportunities."

"It may be pretty in Dubai but it's also educational," she said, referring to last year's NBA trip.

Virtually all judges incur some travel costs at public expense, doing so for training and to attend events for professional networking. As chief judge in Southfield, Johnson has taken trips at public expense, although none of the expense vouchers provided to the Free Press showed her traveling overseas. Her travel vouchers were signed by the court administrator, according to documents that the Free Press obtained via the Michigan Freedom of Information Act. Johnson incurred only modest travel expenses, according to those documents.

A third judge at 46th District Court in Southfield, Cynthia Arvant, expensed a bill for $1,291.74 in late 2022 for a conference held in Detroit. Arvant, who by law must live in Oakland County to serve as a judge in the county, charged her courthouse for a two-night stay at Detroit’s Westin Book Cadillac so that she could attend a weekend conference of the National Association of Women Judges without needing to drive home each night. District court judges in Michigan earn $172,134.62 per year, according to a spokesman for the Michigan Supreme Court.

What's reasonably necessary?

Southfield city officials told the Free Press they felt they had no choice but to cover all costs submitted by the courthouse located behind their city hall, even if those costs include overseas trips to luxury hotels. Yet, according to state law and regulations of the Michigan Supreme Court, local units of government are responsible only for “adequately funding” courthouses. That seems to leave room for interpretation and, potentially, for challenging any high travel expense of court employees, including judges. State law is equally nonspecific as to defining what should be considered “adequate.” Officials at the Michigan Supreme Court and the State Court Administrator’s Office said that no one at those institutions could give legal advice on courthouse expenses. They suggested viewing the guidance delivered in a 2004 state Supreme Court decision, a case between Crawford County and its circuit court. ( 46th Circuit Trial Court v Crawford Co., 261 Mich. App 477; 682 NW2d 519 2004. )

That case established “that the inherent-power doctrine supplies a court with the authority to take whatever steps are reasonably necessary to fulfill the judicial function.” A key word is “reasonably.” It calls for a judgment about what is “reasonable” to spend for operating a courthouse. If the city of Southfield were to challenge its judges over travel expenses, and refuse to pay some of those expenses, the judges could sue and cite this case.

But Southfield might prevail. The Crawford County dispute was about something far more important and considered more "reasonable" than travel expenses. It involved the refusal of Crawford County to stand by its agreement to increase the health and retirement benefits of the court’s employees. Such expenses were reasonable, the county’s circuit court argued. And the Michigan Supreme Court agreed. Travel expenses for judges, in comparison, seem trivial, even if they represent trips that are hardly relevant to a judge’s duties. Still, the city of Southfield would seem to have a case if it refused to pay for costly travel.

Mackinac Island trips

Besides taking luxurious overseas trips, Nance has attended Michigan’s annual conference of judges, held each summer on Mackinac Island. For more than a decade, scores of judges have attended the conference, formerly held each August at one of Michigan’s priciest resorts, the Grand Hotel at Mackinac Island. After prices rose — a typical summer night’s lodging there this year costs more than $1,000 — the state court administrator’s office switched the conference to the less expensive Mission Point Resort for the three-day conference of the Michigan Judges Association. According to judges who’ve attended, important training and lectures do take place at these yearly meetings.

It was an incident at that conference on Mackinac Island in 2019 that led to an investigation of Nance by the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission. The JTC’s investigation stems from misconduct allegations involving a dispute that Nance and a Detroit judge had over a bicycle rental. In the investigation of the dispute, in which the Detroit judge was accused of misusing her position outside a courtroom, Nance was accused of lying to investigators in July 2020 and again in September 2021. The Detroit judge told police that she had been assaulted by the bike shop owner. But when police viewed the shop’s surveillance video, they wrote in their police report — obtained by the Free Press — that the Detroit judge had been the assailant, not the shop owner. That led the JTC to investigate both Nance and the Detroit judge, 36th District Court Judge Demetria Brue.

With Michigan judges now required to take considerably more training, they have choices to make. Judges can obtain it free via online courses, received in their courthouses from the Michigan Judicial Institute, a state agency. Or they can, instead, choose to take the new training in person, perhaps in Michigan, but maybe at distant locales that require overnight or even overseas travel.

Judges who travel for their training can be a costly public expense. With little public scrutiny, they get to choose. Michigan judges “have options” about where they will get their new training, said John Nevin, communications director for the Michigan Supreme Court.
