South Korean Cuisine

Korean cuisine largely comprises of rice, noodles, various vegetables, tofu and many types of meats. Steam-cooked short-grain rice are usually served along with a vast variety of side dishes to please you palate. Kimchi, the popular Korean salad, is usually served at every meal.

Medical Visa

Medical tourists to South Korea have to be invited to receive medical services by registered health providers or medical tourism agencies. An international patient can stay in the country for up to 180 days, depending on the nature of the medical procedure to be done. The patient has to submit the following documents to his local South Korean embassy or consulate:

• Visa Application
• Proof of medical treatment requirement from the health provider
• Financial documents as proof of the patient’s ability to pay for his expenses
• A copy of the registration certificate of the healthcare provider or the medical tourism agency

People from some countries like the US do not have to have a visa. A US passport is enough to enter Korea for up to 90 days of stay in the country. US citizens are only required to get a visa if they have to be there for more than that period. South Korean Currency

South Korea’s official currency is the South Korean Won. Depending on the fluctuating exchange rates, a US dollar can be approximately worth 1,100 SK Won.

South Korea’s Medical Facilities and Equipment

In 2004, the South Korean government started to implement the Hospital Evaluation Program as described by the Korean Medical Service Act. This includes the assessment of hospitals with more than 300 beds every 3 years. This is done by collecting information through questionnaires, telephone surveys that focus on patient satisfaction and hospital management, and onsite inspection.

• All medical institutions and facilitators in the country who are interested to attract medical tourists to South Korea have to register and comply with specific requirements (Article 27.2 of the country’s Medical Service Act).
• In order to register, a medical specialist per department is required to monitor and ensure the quality of healthcare they provide.

• As per the Korea Healthcare Industry Report of 2009, Korea is #3 in the world for the number of CT scan machines per million of population, following only Japan and the US.

To facilitate lifelong education and training, all Korean Medical Association (KMA) members employed at medical facilities are required to complete at least 12 credits of training yearly, ranging from workshops, online training, lectures, publications, symposiums, and conferences.

• Gyeongbokgung Palace : It is the largest palace among the Five Grand Palaces built in Joseon Dynasty. Gyeongbokgung Palace was once destroyed by Japan in the early 20th century. The palace has been gradually restored since then. (Tuesday: Replaced by Changdeokgung Palace)
• Blue House (pass by): The signature markings of the Presidential Residence of Cheong Wa Dae are its blue tiles. It is the first thing that catches one’s attention upon entering the premises. The blue tiles and the smooth roof blend beautifully with Bugaksan Mountain in the backdrop.
• National Folk Museum : It is located on the ground of Gyeongbokgung Palace. The design of the building is based on various historical buildings in Korea. You can see over 98,000 historical objects that were used in everyday life from prehistoric times to the end of Joseon Dynasty.
• Bukchon Hanok Village : Bukchon Hanok Village is home to hundreds of traditional houses (hanok), that date back to the Joseon Dynasty. Today, many of these hanoks operate as cultural centers, guesthouses, restaurants and tea houses, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience, learn and immerse themselves in traditional Korean culture.
• Insadong Antique Shop Alley : Insa-dong is an important place where old but precious and traditional goods are on display.
• N Seoul Tower : The tower was first established as a broadcasting tower to send out TV and radio signals in 1969. As of now, it has become one of the representative landmarks and multi-cultural venues in Seoul.

South Korea is one of the most popular medical tourism destinations in the world. The country has been actively attracting foreign patients with advanced medical technologies and services during the past decade. As of 2021, the cumulative number of patients who visited Korea for medical purposes exceeded three million, with such services growing in popularity. Additionally, the increasing popularity of Hallyu content, such as K-pop or K-drama , has also led to an increase in the number of tourists visiting Korea. Prior to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, record numbers of medical tourists from 190 countries visited South Korea. As of 2022, patient numbers have yet to recover to pre-pandemic figures, but growth has been positive, with medical tourists increasing from around 117 thousand in 2020 to over 248.1 thousand just two years later. Among them, visitors from the United States and China accounted for the largest share of international patients coming to South Korea . A decade ago, the U.S. and Japan accounted for about half, but the nationality distribution of patients is becoming more and more diverse. In fact, the number of patients in Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand and Vietnam as well as northern countries, including Mongolia and Kazakhstan, is increasing. In contrast, patients from Middle Eastern countries, including the United Arab Emirates, slightly decreased recently. The most visited medical department among foreign patients in Korea was the internal medicine department, followed by plastic surgery , and dermatology. The preferred medical treatments to receive in Korea differ from patients' region of origin. Patients from Asian countries such as China, Japan, and Thailand mostly visited Korea for cosmetic purposes such as plastic surgery and dermatology. With the surge in popularity of K-beauty and Korean singers and actors, this aligns with the impact of the Korean Wave ("hallyu") on the tourism sector in Korea. On the other hand, many visitors from the United States, Russia, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan visited Korea for non-cosmetic treatment purposes, such as visiting an internal medicine practice or health checkup center. Prior to the pandemic, more than half of the patients who visited South Korea for medical treatment also enjoyed its additional tourism offers. Most visitors simply enjoyed shopping or city tours, while others visited historical sites and enjoyed its nature and scenery. Medical tourists' per capita spending on medical services lay at an average of around 6.5 thousand U.S. dollars, with drastic differences in expenditure depending on their country of origin.
