Nudity on the balcony... y or n?
By gaubow , February 19, 2009 in First Time Cruisers

Just curious what the general feeling is about nude sunbathing, or just being naked on your own balcony while at sea... is that illegal or indecent? Is it just your balcony and you should be able to do what you want as long as it isn't disruptive to the neighbors?
And no, this doesn't apply to being in port... I just wonder if people can see into your balcony...
Leaving on Freedom Sunday wahoooooooo!

Some balconies are shielded more than others....you would be the one that needs to make the decision though. If other people can see you, I would tend to say it would not be appropriate...Some balconies aren't even big enough, or get enough sun for sun bathing....
Yes, your neighbors can (and probably will) be able to peek around the balcony divider. Plus, there's not much sun on the balconies--each deck is shaded by the one above. You may get sun early morning or late afternoon, when the sun is low in the sky. And do watch out for the maintenance crew--they sometimes drop out of nowhere, to do painting, cleaning, etc... on the outside of the ship.
It's up to you if you want to go "au naturel" on your balcony--but do it knowing that you may be giving someone a show!
Your neighbours can very easily glance around the side, or down from the deck above and see you in all of your glory. Those balconies aren't private! Now sound travels really well on those balconies, so you would probably hear your neighbours when they come outside and you could throw on a towel or robe ...
There hasn't been much sun on most of our balconies. At least not for long periods of time. And unless you have a large balcony stateroom, you really don't have much room for laying .... sitting in the nude will give you some interesting tan marks !
Too if your balcony is positioned right, the people in the upper floors will get a view.
Don't think you will find it very relaxing.
Ships also have security camera looking down the sides of the ship, recording...Nothing is sacred. Also, even if you are the only ship in port, some ports have webcams that can be zoomed...EM
I guess that is my real question. I can just assume that if I am getting changed or whatever with my curtains open, then I am fair game even for such cameras? So the balcony really isn't private, and it sounds like my room may not be either. From neighbors, to crews working on the ship to in-port cameras there may be no secrets....
cruiserbryce
well...you may run into one of two things...one...your balcony doesnt have all the privacy needed to do this and others will see...or two, the balcony is propely covered to allow this but you wont get much sun...
Another thought would be to check out the ports of call for that kind of beach. Haven't seen totally nude, just topless.
To the OP, assume you can be seen if your curtains are open, also some ships have adult only sunbathing decks some are topless some are top and bottomless. Of course if you care if you are seen that doesn't help much either.
Silvery Seas Cruiser
On some ships the dividers between balconies are semi-transparent, sort of a corrugated clear plastic or mottled plastic. It isn't perfectly clear or perfectly transparent, but kids or some curious person could see a blurred image.
I wouldn't be able to relax trying to sun au naturel on a balcony with semi-clear dividers.
We cruised on the Freedom, and the balcony dividers are translucent. They are also easily peeked around. Little kids are notorious for being peeker-arounders, and their parents probably don't want them getting an eyeful.
I second the no-sun thing. Balconies are in shade most of the time. We didn't have a "suit optional" area on that ship either.
Cameras can be anywhere... I just figure "an hour to avoid tan lines, forever on YouTube." NOT worth it! :D
Your best bet if you like nude or seminude sunbathing is probably to find a clothing-optional beach at a port of call. :)
There are also some angled balconies on some ships - standing at the railing on of those you can see down the other balconies and other balconies can see your balcony.
Then their parents ought not let their children go "Peeking" into other peoples private space.
If your balcony isn't very private, IMHO, you should not be nude out there. However, if you have walls between you and the next balcony, and one can not see easily from above and below, I say "go for it."
If someone is going to lean way out, or over, or down, to peek in your balcony, I say, THEY are the problem, not you. If they peek, smile nicely.

My boys are grown now, but I do know what it's like to have young children. While I think someone sunbathing nude should not do so if they don't have decent privacy, I can not think of a single instance where it is excuseable for a child to go around peeking either. Parents have to teach their kids to not do that. And they also have to expect their kids on occasion to be just too curious, mischeivous or stubborn to obey. If my boys would have peeked around the divider, I would have punished them, and appologized profusly to the folks on the next balcony.
If there were no privacy between the balconys, I suppose I would have tried to ask the folks next door if they knew when they wanted to do that, so we could leave. But generally that just gets you told where to go, in no uncertain terms.

Balcony etiquitte(sp) is no looking around the deviders. DW and I do it all the time and no one has ever "peeked". We usually get a bucket of beer from the lido deck and then enjoy some quiet time there. Depending on the time of day, you can get tanned on your upper body. Keep a towel handy just in case. It's your balcony, do what you want.

As long as you have a private balcony that isn't open to public view, go for it............lots of people do.
Excellent idea in theory... doesn't always work in practice!

We have had one of the angled balconies - in fact we choose it because it is a larger balcony and can hold a lounge chair besides the two regular chairs. On those angled balconies, you don't have to lean way out - you can just stand at the railing and see the other balconies as your balcony does stick out and is angled towards the other balconies.

I never sit naked on our private veranda ( wife says it scares the dolphins away). I have fallen asleep in the early morning in undies and woke up to see ship was in port and the docks were crowded. :D:D:D I think the funniest thing is a child peeking around devider and running back in room yelling ( mommy mommy their naked next door) then see the mommy peek around to double check LOL
- 1 month later...
Absolutely.............Helps when joining or reaffirming your membership in the 'balcony club'................;)
Never made it in the "mile high club." Maybe I can talk my wife into joining the balcony club.
She's very modest. It's doubtful..........

Try alcohol...........:D
I cruised on Freedom last year, and be aware that there are translucent panels between the balconies, so people *might* be able to see through to some extent. On Voyager last week, we had a balcony with solid walls.
At night time, of course, it would be no problem, if you are into nude sunbathing in the dark. :D

Officials halt search for Carnival Cruise passenger in her 20s who fell overboard
A woman fell into the ocean from a Carnival Cruise Line ship balcony on Saturday, prompting an international search effort, which has since been called off.
Footage of the woman in her 20s falling from the fifth-floor balcony of her cabin was captured on security cameras, taking place in the Pacific Ocean near Ensenada, Mexico .
The US Coast Guard and the Mexican navy searched for the woman for 31 hours, before halting the rescue mission.
Following the accident, the Carnival Miracle boat returned to Long Beach, so authorities could conduct a proper investigation.
“After 31+ hours of searching, #USCG assets are standing down pending additional information,” the coastguard posted on its official Twitter account. “USCG conducted first light searches this morning off the coast of Ensenada, Mexico with negative results. USCG assets are transiting back to US waters.”
There were more than 1,100 passengers on the ship at the time of the accident, who were awoken with an alert that said: “Man overboard! Man overboard! Man overboard!”
A paramedic onboard has suggested “foul play”.
“Someone has lost their life, whether it was done by accident or by foul play I don’t know,” Daniel Miranda, a Northern California firefighter paramedic on board the ship, told CBS Los Angeles. “There’s some high suspicion of foul play.”
The woman who fell overboard is now presumed dead. Carnival Cruise Line has issued a statement about the incident: “Our thoughts are with the guest and her family, and our Care Team is providing support.”
When a “man overboard” incident happens, cruise ships will pinpoint the place where the person went into the water and turn the boat back. Crew are required to perform an initial search as they notify the emergency services. The FBI will be tasked with conducting an investigation, the Bureau has jurisdiction in other coastal waters. There is no central body that tracks man overboard figures, data from research conducted by Associate Professor of Social Work at Memorial University, Ross A. Klein, found that 325 people have gone overboard on cruise ships and ferries in the past 18 years.
The Independent has contacted Carnival Cruise for further updates.

Excursion Overview
Charter an adventure to the majestic misty fjords national monument.
Your memorable journey starts when you board a 30' Aluminum Chambered boat from the downtown waterfront of Alaska's first city, Ketchikan to the beautiful Misty Fjords National Monument. After entering this majestic wilderness area at the entrance to Rudyerd Bay you will be surrounded by towering cliffs, sheer rock faces, and waterfalls cascading into Punchbowl Cove, emerald lakes, and fjords. Misty Fjords is about 40 miles east of Ketchikan, Alaska, along the Inside Passage coast in southeastern Alaska, and approximately two hours (one way) by boat. What makes this Misty Fjords boat tour unique is you become the captain of the ship! You will work in close partnership with the captain to determine the course. If you decide you would like to stop and enjoy certain areas of the Misty Fjords longer, perhaps New Eddystone Rock, an immense volcanic spire rising from the emerald sea, or the abundant coastal and marine wildlife including bald eagles, black and brown bears, humpback and orca whales, and more, we will do so. Enjoy your time through the splendid two million-acre wilderness preserve surrounded by 3,000-foot vertical cliffs, glacial fjords, and cascading waterfalls. Bring your camera, as photo opportunities of spectacular scenery and wildlife opportunities abound! A day cruise to Misty Fjords National Monument is an experience you'll always remember.

My husband and I really enjoyed the boat excursion to Misty Fjords. Our captain Keith took us to the beautiful nature. His narrative was very knowledgeable and professional. We had a great experience to see wildlife. We will highly recommend this excursion to our friends!

This was an incredible excursion with a very knowledgeable guide. The views here were breathtaking. It s about 1.5-2 hrs from where the cruise ship docs, but well worth the ride. We saw whales and seals and even a deer swimming from one island to another! Sheldon was a great captain who tailored our trip to what we wanted. He knew our time constraints and was able to work to get us back to our cruise ship on time. I would highly recommend Sheldon and the trip to Misty Fjord.

Princess Cruises is taking a page out of the ultra-luxury cruise industry with new all-inclusive, $3,000 cabins
- Princess Cruises says its new Sun Princess and upcoming Star Princess will have all-inclusive cabins.
- Guests who've booked the new Sanctuary Collection category would get an inclusive package and private lounge.
- It's a move that could appeal to ultra-luxury cruisers .
If you want to go on an all-inclusive vacation at sea, you no longer need to book an ultra-luxury, ultra-expensive cruise line .
Just sail on Princess Cruises' new ship instead.
In October, Princess says its two-month-old Sun Princess will debut in the US with the company's first-ever Sanctuary Collection, an adult-only lounge exclusive to guests who've booked one of the collection's high-end cabins. These luxurious accommodations comprise 10% of the ship's 2,157 staterooms, including all its suites.
But the Sanctuary's biggest perk arguably isn't the lounge's private pool and restaurant — it's the all-inclusiveness , a rarity among mass-market cruise lines.
It's the Carnival Corp. brand's latest appeal to ultra-luxury cruisers
Mass-market cruise lines like Princess, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian typically follow the " budget airline " strategy: charge a cheap base fare and offer plenty of irresistible up-charged amenities (like specialty restaurants, as is the case of Sun Princess).
It's a stark contrast to the high-end cruise industry, where all-inclusivity is often considered the standard.
For example, luxury cruise line Explora Journey's fare includes alcoholic beverages, WiFi, and access to the spa — amenities that would typically cost extra on ships like Sun Princess. On Regent Seven Seas , all this, plus excursions, pre-cruise hotels, and roundtrip flights are also included in the cost to sail.
Related stories
Over the last few years, Princess has begun following in these high-end cruise lines' foosteps.
In 2022, it launched Princess Premier, an optional inclusive package covering amenities like WiFi, drinks, some upcharged restaurants, and workout classes. It's the same package Sanctuary Collection guests would get, along with the private restaurant and adult-only lounge with cabanas, a pool, and private events.
The exclusive lounge concept is nothing new. Royal Caribbean's two largest cruise liners have a "neighborhood" exclusive to suite guests. The same applies to Norwegian, Celebrity, and MSC Cruises' vessels.
However, while these competing retreats offer perks like drink packages, WiFi, or private restaurants, none are as "inclusive" as Princess'.
In 2024, Sun Princess' Sanctuary cabins start at more than $3,000 per person for a weeklong Caribbean cruise in mid-December. To compare, the cheapest interior cabin for the same itinerary starts shy of $700 per person.
The cruise line says its next ship, Star Princess, which will debut in late September 2025, will also carry the Sanctuary Collection.
Following in the footsteps of high-end, all-inclusive cruise lines could be a wise decision for Princess. These luxury vacations at sea have become increasingly popular as travelers continue to spend big on their trips.
Like Princess, expedition cruise company HX recently shifted to an all-inclusive model as well.
Back on dry land, hotel giants like Hyatt and Marriott have also seen a boom in these "everything free" resorts .
Apparently, every vacationer — whether on water or solid ground — just wants one thing: stress-free poolside lounging with bottomless drinks.

Instead, you should just anticipate the price difference between a basic bare-bones interior cabin and a balcony room. In our estimation, it seems to run between 50%-100% more for a balcony cabin. So if a 7-day cruise for an interior cabin is $500 per person, expect a balcony to be between $750 and $1,000. You can check prices for balconies ...
