Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee quits reunion tour mid-show due to broken ribs

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

He’s no Dr. Feelgood.

Tommy Lee didn’t let his broken ribs get in the way of his reunion with his Mötley Crüe bandmates after a nearly seven-year hiatus on Thursday.

Even though the iconic drummer only lasted five songs into the band’s hotly anticipated reunion kickoff tour at Truist Park in Atlanta, Ga., it was actually five more songs than his doctor ordered.

In true Lee fashion, the musician ignored the doctor’s advice and went ahead with his performance during the band’s opening night alongside Def Leppard, Poison, and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts.

After soldiering on through five tracks on the drums, Lee’s pain was too much for him to handle.

“Man y’all ain’t gonna believe this s–,” he wrote on social media ahead of the gig. “I broke four f—ing ribs!”

“But I’ve been resting and healing and even though the doctor tells me I shouldn’t play at all, you know I’m stubborn and I’ll beast through the pain every show for as many songs as I can.”

Lee revealed he had Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne’s drummer Tommy Clufetos save the show until he’s “back at 100 percent.”

“We’ve all been waiting years for this moment and there’s no way I’m missing this! On with the show,” Lee added.

“We did it! You did it, we did it, we’re f—ing here!” he told the crowd, referring to the times the tour was postponed from 2020 as a result of the pandemic.

“OK, anyway, what I’ve got to tell you is about 14 days ago, I f—ing broke not one, not two, not three, but four f—ing ribs right here.”

“I wish I had a f—ing badass story, like me and Conor McGregor f—ing scrapping out in some f—ing bar or something, but I don’t,” Lee explained, before welcoming Clufetos to the stage.

Before leaving the stage, Lee shared the doctor’s orders with the crowd.

“The doctors told me, ‘No playing, bro. No playing.’ And I was like, ‘Are you f—ing high, bro? We’ve got a f—ing tour to do!’ So anyway, I ain’t sitting out for s—. My boy’s gonna help me out here and I’ll see you guys later. On with the goddamn show.”

During the fifth song of the band’s set, Lee decided it was time to call it a day and rest up. He exited the gig behind his drum kit, according to Ultimate Classic Rock .

Tommy Lee Breaks Ribs, Exits Mötley Crüe’s Reunion Tour Kickoff

by Jacob Uitti June 17, 2022, 10:56 am

Mötley Crüe, despite rising to fame in the 1980s, is still making headlines.

Videos by American Songwriter

From the recent Hulu series, Pam & Tommy , about drummer Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson to news of the kickoff of their reunion tour this week.

But Lee made new headlines following the band’s debut show for the reunion tour. Lee had to exit the show early, revealing that he had previously broken four of his ribs. He was replaced by Ozzy Osbourne drummer Tommy Clufetos.

That Clufetos was on hand, likely means that the band was prepared for the possibility that Lee couldn’t go the distance.

Leaving the show, Lee told the crowd, “We did it! You did it, we did it, we’re f**king here.” Indeed, Crüe’s co-headlining Stadium Tour with Def Leppard has commenced after more than a two-year delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Added Lee, “Okay, anyway, what I’ve got to tell you is about 14 days ago, I f**kin’ broke not one, not two, not three, but four f**kin’ ribs … I wish I had a f**kin’ badass story like me and Connor McGregor f**kin’ scrapping out in some f**kin’ bar or something, but I don’t. The doctors told me, ‘No playing, bro. No playing.’ And I was like, ‘Are you f**king high, bro? We’ve got a f**king tour to do!’ So anyway, I ain’t sitting out for shit. My boy’s gonna help me out here and I’ll see you guys later. On with the goddamn show.”

Clufetos then came on and finished out the remaining 11 songs.

Lee, later that night, wrote on Twitter that Clufetos will be filling in on upcoming shows, saying, “Tommy Clufetos is here to help me out until I’m back at 100% … we’ve all been waiting years for this moment, and there’s no way I’m missing this!”

The Atlanta show also featured Machine Gun Kelly, who portrayed Lee in the movie The Dirt . MGK played on the song “The Dirt (Est. 1981).” He’d previously recorded the song with the band for the Netflix movie.

The Atlanta show was the first for Mötley Crüe since their December 31 gig in 2015.

Tommy Lee Performs First Full Mötley Crüe Show Since Breaking Four Ribs

By Althea Legaspi

Althea Legaspi

Tommy Lee played his first full show on Mötley Crüe’s stadium tour last night, June 28, since announcing he had broken four ribs earlier this month .

His return to a full performance took place at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte during the seventh stop of the trek, as Ultimate Classic Rock reports. Per The Charlotte Observer , Lee did not mention his injury during the show.

Up until last night, the drummer had been performing part of their sets during the tour, with Ozzy Osbourne’s drummer Tommy Clufetos filling in for him for the second half. Lee announced he had injured himself during the opening night of the tour with Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts.

“We did it! You did it, we did it, we’re fucking here!” Lee said, apparently referring to the times the tour has been postponed. “OK, anyway, what I’ve got to tell you is about 14 days ago, I fuckin’ broke not one, not two, not three, but four fuckin’ ribs right here.”

“I wish I had a fuckin’ badass story, like me and Conor McGregor fuckin’ scrapping out in some fuckin’ bar or something, but I don’t,” Lee continued, before introducing Clufetos, who took over for Lee for part of the set. But despite the doctor’s advice, Lee said he “ain’t sitting out for shit.”

His wife, Brittany Furlan recently explained how Lee was injured: he fell down some precarious stone stairs at a rental house in Nashville while he was carrying luggage. “And he fell down these crazy stairs and broke — broke — four ribs. Not fractured, not bruised — broke,” she said.

The tour was  originally scheduled for 2020  and postponed due to the pandemic.  The trek  runs through the summer, culminating on Sept. 9 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

The post Tommy Lee Plays First Full Set During Mötley Crüe’s Reunion Tour After Breaking His Ribs: Watch appeared first on Consequence .

Tommy Lee was able to play his first full set during Mötley Crüe ’s ongoing stadium tour on Tuesday night (June 28th) in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Lee broke his ribs two weeks before the launch of the band’s highly anticipated reunion tour. Prior to last night’s concert, he had only been able to get through the first few songs of each show before being replaced by Ozzy Osbourne drummer Tommy Clufetos for the remainder of each set.

“I wish I had a f**kin’ badass story like me and Connor McGregor f**kin’ scrapping out in some f**kin’ bar or something, but I don’t,” Lee had joked to the crowd at the tour kickoff in Atlanta on June 16th, leaving fans wondering how he broke his ribs. His wife, Brittany Furlan, finally revealed that the drummer had fallen down the stairs while trying to carry luggage at a rental home in Nashville.

Thankfully, Lee’s recovery seems to be going well, as he handled drumming duties for the entire 15-song set in Charlotte. Video footage from the concert sees the drummer in good spirits and keeping up with the band’s fast-paced tunes.

Tommy Lee replaced five songs into Motley Crue's opening Stadium Tour set

Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee started the band's set in Atlanta but was unable to continue

Tommy Lee at the premiere of The Dirt

While much of the talk in the build up to Motley Crue 's first appearance at this year's on-off-on-off-on-again Stadium Tour has been centred around the preparedness of singer Vince Neil, it's the band's previously indestructible drummer who's let the side down.

Tommy Lee was forced to abandon his position behind the drum stool on opening night at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia, after just five songs. In what must be one of the most Tommy Lee things that Tommy Lee has ever done, it turns out that the livewire sticksman broke several ribs recently, so took to the stage apparently unsure of his ability to play the full set without further aggravating the injury.

With a standby drummer waiting in the wings, Lee made it through Wild Side, Shout at the Devil, Too Fast for Love, Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away) and Saints of Los Angeles before retiring to the sidelines. He informed the crowd that he had broken four ribs a fortnight ago, and was performing against the advice of doctors.

Lee's replacement Tommy Clufetos – who drummed on Black Sabbath 's final tour and is a member of Nikki Sixx 's L.A. Rats supergroup side-project – entered the fray just in time for Live Wire, and kept his position throughout the set, which included an appearance from Machine Gun Kelly, the actor and musician who played Lee in the Motley Crue movie The Dirt . Full setlist below.

There is no word as yet as to when Lee will be able to resume his place behind the stool, or if these short appearances are going to be the norm going forward. The next show is at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL, on Saturday.

Tommy Lee Bows Out Half Way Through First Mötley Crüe Reunion Tour Show Due To Broken Ribs

June 17, 2022 / 1:04 PM PDT / CBS Sacramento

(CBS13/CNN) -- Tommy Lee says his doctor told him not to perform, but no way was he missing the beginning of the Mötley Crüe reunion tour.

The group performed Thursday at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia, and Lee was only able to make it a few songs in before he made the announcement to the audience that he had broken four ribs about two weeks ago.

It was news he had earlier shared on  his verified Instagram account.

The Stadium Tour: Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Joan Jett and The Blackhearts and Classless Act

"But I've been resting and healing and even though the doctor tells me I shouldn't play at all, you know I'm stubborn and I'll beast through the pain every show for as many songs as I can," he wrote in a statement posted.

According to the post, Black Sabbath drummer Tommy Clufetos would be subbing for Lee.

"We've all been waiting years for this moment and there's no way I'm missing this!," Lee wrote. "On with the show."

Since broken ribs take one to two months to heal, barring any other incidents, the band will perform, as scheduled,  at San Francisco's Oracle Park on September 7.

Motley Crue drummer asked crowd to expose genitals at CA show in Oracle Park, concertgoer says

Dion Lim Image

SAN FRANCISCO -- A concertgoer is speaking out against the actions of rock band Motley Crue after he said its drummer encouraged audience members to expose their genitals on camera at a recent tour stop in California.

Juan Alvarez and his sister attended the band's San Francisco concert on Wednesday. They waited three years to attend, given the pandemic pause. A YouTube video shows founding member Tommy Lee asking the crowd to expose their genitals.

Alvarez was shocked and says it was traumatizing not only for himself but for children who witnessed the naked body parts on the Jumbotron.

"Minors and everyone was forced to see people nude on the big screen and everyone was doing it around us too. It was like Sodom and Gomorrah, it was crazy. Even the usher, he had to pull a guy down from the brick wall because he had his private parts out, screaming. It was pretty crazy," Alvarez said.

Alvarez knows the band is known for its raunchy antics and understands many rock fans will give the band a pass.

"They thought it was absolutely fine and normal and hilarious and okay," Alvarez said. "When I brought up there were children and 6 and 9-year-old girls and kids there, they said 'Well, they shouldn't have come to the Crue show.'"

ABC7 Chicago's sister station KGO reached out to a San Francisco Giants spokesperson, who confirmed there had been several complaints and expressed concern to promoters. The spokesperson added the Giants staff was not involved in show production and does not plan on issuing a statement. The bands tour stop was at the Giants home ballpark Oracle Park.

Alvarez plans to file a police report with San Francisco police for the indecent exposure and has no plans to ever return to another Motley Crue show again.

On Thursday's Loudwire Nights (May 2), host Chuck Armstrong shared an exclusive conversation with Motley Crue 's John 5 and Tommy Lee and Kevin Vargas , who runs El Paso's rock radio station — and member of the Loudwire Nights family — 95.5 KLAQ .

The three caught up about what it's like having John 5 in the band and why they chose " Dogs of War " as their first offering this year.

"We recorded three tunes, a cover that we all love and a couple others," Lee explained to Vargas.

"The whole idea and the vibe of ['Dogs of War'] was like, you know what, let's go with this one. This one definitely represents where we're at right here at this moment. Let's go with this."

John 5 added that as he's worked more and more with Nikki Sixx and Lee, he's loved seeing what happens when they get together.

"It's just like ideas, ideas, ideas, ideas. It's so cool...with 'Dogs of War,' it was definitely going to be the one, you know?"

What John 5 Brings to Motley Crue

In addition to talking about "Dogs of War," Vargas pressed John 5 about what it's like being the new guitarist in Motley Crue — and what he thinks he brings to the table for a band that's been making music for more than four decades.

"I want to pay respect to the music," John 5 admitted.

"I'm playing it just how it was recorded and written and I think that's very important to the fans. It's important to me to give that respect — this is how it was written, this is how it should sound live."

Beyond that, John 5 was quick to say how grateful he is to not only be playing the classics live, but collaborating with the band on new music.

"Being a part of this, it's just wonderful. A wonderful match. I couldn't be happier."

What Else Did Motley Crue's Tommy Lee and John 5 Discuss on Loudwire Nights ?

  • Why Tommy Lee likes Motley Crue being a sort of musical chameleon: "Sometimes we're ahead of ourselves and everybody else in what's cool or what's next. I mean, me personally, I've got my finger on the pulse of what new sounds are emerging and what we can use in Motley. I'm always forward-thinking like that."

MÖTLEY CRÜE's TOMMY LEE On Stage Theatrics For 'The Stadium Tour': 'We're Starting To Put Together Something Incredible'

MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee says that he is starting to think about ways to top the group's 2015 farewell tour, during which he and his bandmates played all their greatest hits with plenty of stage theatrics. pyrotechnics, and even a roller coaster ridden by Lee .

Speaking about what he has planned for CRÜE 's 2020 "The Stadium Tour" with DEF LEPPARD and POISON , Tommy said during this past Wednesday's (December 4) press conference at SiriusXM 's Hollywood Studios: "I'm going to shoot myself out of a fucking cannon at this point. I don't even know what's left to do. We started designing the production a couple of days ago. We've always put everything we have into the design and the production, always try to do a show where people walk out going, 'That was fucking insane.'"

He continued: "There's a lot of new technology right now that we haven't gotten the chance to play with, and we're excited. We're starting to put together something incredible. And [it's] in a stadium, so everything's going to be four times as big."

Back in the mid-1980s, the CRÜE 's stage show saw Lee's kit mounted to a platform that would rotate forward almost 90 degrees, to allow audiences a bird's-eye view of his performance. According to Rolling Stone , Lee 's kit-in-a-cage from the 1987-1988 "Girls, Girls, Girls" tour would raise him high above the stage and spin him head over heels, while the '89-'90 "Dr. Feelgood" jaunt had Lee and his drums traveling out over the crowd. For MÖTLEY 's 2011 summer tour, his kit was placed inside a Ferris wheel-like contraption known as "the 360" or "the Loop." For the 2014-2015 tour, Lee and MÖTLEY CRÜE production manager Robert Long developed the Crüecifly, which saw Lee negotiate 155 feet of roller coaster track in every position — forwards, backwards, even upside down.

"The Stadium Tour" will kick off July 7 at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium and wind down on September 5 at Los Angeles's SoFi Stadium. Tickets go on sale on December 13 at 10:00 a.m.

The 22-date trek marks CRÜE 's first live dates since wrapping its "farewell" tour. The band toured with POISON back in 2011 and DEF LEPPARD teamed up with POISON for a string of road dates in 2017, but the upcoming jaunt marks the first time all three acts have hit the road together for an extended tour.

Tommy Lee Drum Solo Stunts 1983-2015: A Video History

Nobody in rock history has done more to expand the concept of what a drum solo can look and sound like than Motley Crue 's Tommy Lee . Need proof? Check out the awesome videos below!

Over the course of the past four decades, Lee has proven himself to be one of the genre's most amazing showmen, performing physical feats during his solos that would have once been unimaginable. It's all the more impressive when you remember that he's an incredibly talented musician – one who clearly doesn't need these stunts to make a strong contribution to the band's shows.

Be sure to strap in tightly and keep your hands inside the cage, so you can safely enjoy the 30 years of insane stunts found in our Tommy Lee Drum Solo Stunts Video History.

'Shout at the Devil' Tour (1983-84) Taken from the Shout at the Devil tour, our look at Tommy Lee's drum solos kicks off with what is arguably the least flashy of all the performances included here. Which means it's "only" three and a half minutes of runaway train-like madness, punctuated with a shockingly crude pyrotechnic blast. It's a wonder they survived those early days, huh?

'Theatre of Pain' Tour (1985-86) Here's where Lee's drum solos first began getting innovative, theatrical and dangerous. As Tommy's six-minute long percussion showcase progresses, the back of the platform under his drum kit progressively elevates. By the end, he's at a 90-degree angle, offering the crowd a bird's eye view they'd normally only be able to see if they were stapled to the roof of the building.

'Girls, Girls Girls' Tour (1987-88) The Girls, Girls, Girls tour is where Lee really began blowing away people's preconceptions about drum solos. It would have been more than enough to see someone perform in an elevated cage that could tilt to both the left and the right on a 90 degree angle high above the crowd. But Tommy wasn't content to stop there. Turns out this contraption was also capable of doing a complete 360-degree turn, with Lee playing in his usual over-caffeinated style the whole time.

'Dr. Feelgood' Tour (1989-90) How do you top a drum solo that found you flipping from side to side and head over heels? Altitude, baby! Every night on this tour Lee traveled across the ceiling of the biggest venues in the world, playing drums along with crowd-pleasing hits by Led Zeppelin , Joe Walsh and AC/DC . As a bonus, the solo culminated with Lee bungee-jumping off his drum riser. At one show in Connecticut, this almost went horribly wrong: a miscommunication with his drum tech saw Lee bang heads with a concert goer before ultimately hitting the ground.

'Anywhere There's Electricity' Tour (1994) The drum solo undertaken by Lee on Motley Crue's "back to basics" 1994 tour in support of their underrated, Vince Neil -less self-titled record  was relatively normal – if that word even exists in the world of Motley Crue. Regardless, don't equate normalcy with a lack of flair, talent or energy. Lee clearly has all three in abundance.

'Motley Crue vs. the Earth' Tour (1997) With Neil back in the fold for the Generation Swine album, Motley Crue dialed up the showmanship a bit. Accordingly, Lee conjured up a drum solo that traded acrobatic stunts for gun-toting aliens and a bit of magical misdirection.

'Carnival of Sins' Tour (2005-06) At first, it would seem Lee has once again stripped away the stunts and tricks for this tour in order to put the emphasis back on his impressive musical skills. Then, halfway through this solo he suddenly goes all Gene Simmons on us, flying up to a riser suspended from the ceiling and performing amidst electronic beats on a completely different set of drums.

The 'Drum Coaster' (2011-13) For the band's 30th-anniversary tour, Lee revisited the 360-degree idea first seen on the Girls, Girls, Girls tour. The awe-inspiring re-invention and upgrade of that concept became known as the "Drum Coaster." "The coaster stems from when I started doing all that other shit years ago," Lee explained to us. "It’s become one of those things where everyone is always asking, 'What’s next? What’s next?' That kind of pressure gets you thinking." An even cooler thing about the "Drum Coaster?" Lee invited an audience member to come along for the ride each night.

'The Cruecifly' (2014-15) Against all odds, Lee found a way to top even the jaw-dropping "Drum Coaster" for Motley Crue's "final" tour [Spoiler alert: It wasn't]. The "Cruecifly" seemed to be his version of a drum solo "Greatest Hits" tour. It was on tracks like the coaster – but extended across the ceiling out over the crowd like the Dr. Feelgood kit. Oh, and of course it could also do everything the Theatre of Pain and Girls, Girls, Girls editions did, as well. Short of setting himself on fire – and that is NOT a dare – we think Tommy Lee may have reached the pinnacle of drum solo spectacle here.

Mötley crüe hits new career high as latest single debuts.

Mötley Crüe is back after several years of relative quiet with a new single, and fans seem to be really into the just-released tune. The rockers’ “Dogs of War” arrives on a number of Billboard charts, spurred on by strong sales and radio attention. As the cut debuts, it helps the band return to tallies they’re still just getting to know–and it even brings them to heights they’ve never seen before on at least one ranking.

“Dogs of War” debuts at No. 18 on this week’s Rock & Alternative Airplay chart. That’s a very healthy start on one of Billboard’s radio lists, where it’s common for the newest launches—even from superstars—to enter low and then rise fairly quickly.

No. 18 is not just an impressive starting point for “Dogs of War,” it’s a notable position for Mötley Crüe. In fact, it now stands as their highest-charting hit ever on the radio tally, which is a bit shocking, considering it manages that feat as it debuts.

So far, Mötley Crüe has only landed three hits on the Rock & Alternative Airplay chart. That’s a very small sum for a band that’s so well-known in the rock genre, but they’ve been adding to the total occasionally for the past half-decade.

Before “Dogs of War” debuted, Mötley Crüe’s highest placing hit on this ranking was only a few rungs lower than it is now that the new single has arrived. In 2019, “The Dirt (Est. 1981)” peaked at No. 20 on this list. That track was fronted by Machine Gun Kelly and featured Mötley Crüe, but it still counts toward their career totals.

Google Chrome Gets Third Emergency Update In A Week As Attacks Continue

Biden vs. trump 2024 election polls: biden losing support among key voting blocs, japanese fans are puzzled that yasuke is in assassin s creed shadows.

Two years ago, they doubled their number of placements on the Rock & Alternative Airplay chart. Mötley Crüe was one of five groups credited on a track titled “The Retaliators Theme (21 Bullets),” which rose to No. 47. They were named alongside The Retaliators, From Ashes to New, Asking Alexandria, and Ice Nine Kills.

“Dogs of War” is just getting started on the Billboard charts, and big things may be in store for the cut. While it could fall on a number of sales-focused lists–because interest in buying a tune is typically at its most intense when the tune first arrives–it would not be odd to see it continue to climb on the Rock & Alternative Airplay ranking, and perhaps others as well. From here on out, every rung it lifts is a new career high for the band.

Bully Ray Recalls Chasing Down Motley Crue's Tommy Lee, Getting An Autograph At A Yankees Game

Bully Ray was a huge fan of Motley Crue back in the day.

The WWE Hall of Famer had the band on Busted Open Radio . They spoke about topics like the band’s relationship and which venues they prefer to play in.

However, it was Bully Ray who told the most hilarious story of the day. Just as the show was ending, he reminded Tommy Lee of something that happened between them when he just a 16-year-old kid in New York.

Bully Ray told the story about him and his sister attending a game at Yankee Stadium. They spotted Heather Locklear on the screen. The duo deduced that if Locklear was there, her then-husband, Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, would also be there.

The crowd swarmed to see Locklear. Bully Ray chased the musician down and had him sign something, a hot dog container from a vendor, of all items.

“Tommy, as a 16-year-old kid, I’m at a Yankee game. They put up a thing on the screen that said the Yankees would like to welcome Heather Locklear to the game, right? So, I see that. My sister says to me, she goes, ‘Well, if she’s here, that means Tommy Lee is here.’. And I’m like, ‘You’re right, you’re right.’ I look down, and this section just starts to crowd with people. And there was a bunch of dudes who are going to see Heather Locklear. I’m like, ‘Not me, not me!'”

“I ran down there, I’m screaming at you. This is right around “Theater of Pain” time, I’m like, ‘Tommy f***in’ Crue rules!’. I chased you through the corridors of Yankee Stadium. Some chick was putting a hot dog in a container. I took the hot dog container. I ripped it in half, you grabbed my hand, you threw me in a room, and you signed my hot dog container for me.”

Bully joked that Lee probably had no idea, but the drummer said he remembered the meeting.
