Travel vaccine FAQs

Travel vaccines are a series of immunisations that travellers can get before visiting certain countries in the world, which will prevent them from getting common illnesses or diseases. The vaccines which are recommended or required when travelling to (or living in) the UK are: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Rabies, Meningitis, Polio, Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR), TDP (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis), Chickenpox, Shingles, Pneumonia and Influenza.

No travel vaccine is mandatory in the UK. Although, when travelling to certain countries outside the UK some vaccines are recommended if not required. Getting vaccinated will help keep you safe and healthy while you’re traveling. It will also help make sure that you don’t bring any serious diseases home to your family, friends, and community. You can find out more information on recommended travel vaccines for our top destinations here.

The vaccines you need to get before traveling will depend on a number of factors, these may include:

  • Where you are travelling to, as some countries require proof of vaccination for certain diseases.
  • Your health or medical history. If you’re pregnant or have a weakened immune system, you may need additional doses of certain vaccines.
  • Where you are staying. If you are going to stay in rural or underdeveloped areas for a long amount of time, you may be at higher risk to certain illnesses, and therefore you may need more doses of the vaccines. We would be advised to seek your doctor’s advice to know exactly what you need according to these specific guidelines.

If you would like to find out which vaccinations are required for specific destinations, please click here to check out top travel vaccine destinations.

Most tavel vaccinations administered in the UK are chargable and will not be administered free on the NHS. The cost of travel vaccines at MyHealthcare Clinic ranges from £30 to around £125 per dose depending on the vaccine required.

Travel vaccines generally last from 2 up to 10 years depending on the vaccination, after which some may require boosters. However some vaccines offer lifelong protection, such as the Yellow Fever.

You can find out more about travel vaccines on our blog.

Travel Clinic

Travel Clinic at Our Islington Pharmacy

Walk-in travel clinic in north london.

If you are off travelling or on holiday from London, make Dermacia's travel clinic your first port of call for vaccinations and health travel advice about wherever you are travelling to. We can supply everything you need for a safe, happy holiday, whether it is mosquito repellant, high factor suncream or any of the various types of vaccinations required for countries around the world.

You are advised to get vaccinations before you travel to some European countries as tick-borne Encephalitis is prevalent in over 20 countries in Europe, including Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Italy, Switzerland and the Baltic and Balkan countries. We can let you know what diseases are present in the countries that you plan to visit, whether there is malaria, and if so what are the best antimalarials for that particular region.

Dermacia pharmacists can also advise how to protect you and your family from insect bites and how to take precautions such as taking probiotics so that you don't suffer from diarrhoea. We are also a registered Yellow Fever vaccination centre.

If you have any questions about travel or vaccinations, please call Dermacia to book an appointment to speak to one of our specially trained immunisation and travel health pharmacists, who will advise you on a personalised health plan to suit your needs, or pop in to our Islington pharmacy for our walk-in travel clinic.

VACCINATION INFORMATION

Hajj & umrah travel.

Hajj & Umrah Pilgrimage Vaccinations

We have plenty of experience vaccinating pilgrims travelling to perform Hajj and Umrah and our clinics are among those recommended by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB). We can vaccinate you for Meningitis ACWY and give you the certificate required by Saudi Arabia for the visa. Many of our staff have performed Hajj and are well placed to discuss questions you may have about your pilgrimage.

What vaccines do you need for Hajj & Umrah?

MENINGITIS ACWY

In order to obtain a visa for entry into Saudi Arabia, all those arriving to perform Hajj or Umra, or undertake seasonal work, are required to have a valid certificate of vaccination against meningococcal disease.

All adults and children aged over two years should be given a single dose of the meningococcal ACWY vaccine:

  • Conjugate ACWY vaccine – given not more than five years and not less than ten days before arrival in Saudi Arabia

At Green Light, we always use the Conjugate vaccine as this provides better and longer protection against Meningitis ACWY.

Pilgrims & seasonal workers coming from the UK are recommended to have the polio vaccination, which is combined with diphtheria and tetanus and provides protection for up to 10 years. However, proof of vaccination against polio within the last 12 months is required for pilgrims & seasonal workers arriving from:

  • Afghanistan, Pakistan & Nigeria
  • Countries which remain vulnerable to polio [see Saudi Arabia Ministry of Health page https://www.moh.gov.sa/en/hajj/pages/healthregulations.aspx ]

YELLOW FEVER

All pilgrims to Hajj &Umrah arriving from countries at risk for transmission of yellow fever must produce a valid certificate documenting yellow fever vaccination. The following countries are deemed to be at risk of yellow fever transmission:

Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, The Republic of South Soudan, Togo and Uganda.

Argentina, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guyana, Guyana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Bolivia, Suriname and Trinidad & Tobago.

SEASONAL FLU

The Ministry of Health for Saudi Arabia recommend that pilgrims are vaccinated against seasonal flu with the most recently available vaccine. Hajj &Umrah pose an increased risk due to the crowded conditions and close contact.Vaccination is strongly recommended for those who are at increased risk of severe disease including:

  • Pregnant women
  • Elderly individuals (>65 years)
  • Those with pre-existing medical conditions

The flu vaccine is available for free under the NHS for the above, so please check with your local Green Light pharmacist.

HEPATITIS A

Hepatitis A is a viral infection transmitted through contaminated food and water or by direct contact with an infectious person.

HEPATITIS B

Hepatitis B virus is found in body fluids and can be transmitted through the skin by the use of contaminated medical, dental, or other instruments.

One of the rites of Hajj is for men to have their head shaved. The Saudi authorities provide licensed barbers with a new blade to use for each pilgrim. However, unlicensed barbers may not conform to this standard. Pilgrims should avoid shaving with a blade previously used by another, as this could result in transmission of hepatitis B and other blood borne infections such as hepatitis C, for which there is no vaccine. Pilgrims can consider taking with them a disposable razor for personal use during this rite.

All pilgrims should consider receiving hepatitis B vaccine prior to travel.

All pilgrims should ensure that they are up-to-date with routine immunisations including measles, mumps and rubella (MMR). Pilgrims should check this with their GP surgery and if they are not vaccinated, they should complete the primary course (2 vaccines) before pilgrimage to Hajj & Umrah. How much does it cost?

What other health risks are there?

Malaria is not present in Medina or Makkah [Mecca] (or in the cities of Jeddah, Riyadh and Ta’if or areas of Asir province above 2,000m), but malaria is a risk in the south-western provinces of Saudi Arabia (including Asir province below 2,000m). Pilgrims planning further travel before or after Hajj or Umra to malaria risk areas in Saudi Arabia or Asia, Africa and Latin America, should seek advice from their local Green Light Pharmacist.

TRAVELLERS’ DIARRHOEA

Dehydration can occur with diarrhoea and is of particular risk in hot weather. Babies, infants, the elderly and those with long-term medical conditions are more vulnerable to dehydration.

All pilgrims are advised to take personal, food and water hygiene precautions.

Travellers should also take with them oral rehydration therapy and self-treatment for diarrhoea. Standby antibiotic treatment can be considered, especially for those travellers who have an underlying medical condition. Please ask your local Green Light Pharmacist for more information.

SHINGLES VACCINE

NEW SHINGLES VACCINE – SHINGRIX (BEST PRICE IN LONDON)

We have a limited supply of the new Shingles vaccine – Shingrix, which is manufactured by GSK. The vaccine is not available in the UK and has been specifically imported from the EU. Globally, this vaccine is in extremely short supply and it is unlikely that supply of vaccine will meet demand for a number of years. The vaccine is authorized in all EU member states but has only been able to launch it in 3 countries so far as supply cannot meet demand. This is even the case in the US, where Shingrix was first launched in late 2017. There is unlikely to be a NHS program for it in the near future.

How to secure your booking for Shingrix

Due to the limited availability of the vaccine, we must charge you for the full course when booking your first appointment (this must be done over the phone or in person). We believe we offer the best price for Shingrix on the market. The cost is £225 per dose (£450 for the full course of 2 vaccines given two to six months apart) and we don’t charge any other fees!

What is Shingles?

Shingles is a painful, blistering rash that usually appears on one side of the body. It is caused by reactivation of the virus that causes Chickenpox [Varicella Zoster] and can lead to persistent pain in the site of blistering and scarring.

How do you get Shingles?

Once you have had Chickenpox, the virus [Varicella Zoster] stays in your body within the nerve cells. The virus can be reactivated in the future, usually at times of body stress or infection to cause Shingles. It is estimated that the risk of getting Shingles is 1 in 4 over your lifetime. Although Shingles can occur at any age, it is most common over 50 years.

What are the complications of Shingles?

Shingles can be a serious infection that can cause several complications. These include:

  • Post Herpetic Neuralgia – this is long lasting nerve pain that can persist at the site of infection. The pain can be described as shooting, burning or like electric shocks and can be extremely debilitating. There is no cure for this and this pain can persist for months or even years after infection with Shingles has resolved.
  • Visual disturbances or loss of vision that can be caused by shingles infection in the eye
  • Encephalitis or Meningitis – these are conditions where there is inflammation of the brain or lining of the brain

What vaccines are available against Shingles?

There are now two types of vaccination available to protect against Shingles. Zostavax, the live Shingles vaccine used currently by the NHS (for selected individuals), is a single-dose vaccine. Shingrix, the new non-live recombinant Shingles vaccine, requires 2 doses given 2-6 months apart. This is not currently available on the NHS and is unlikely to be in the near future.

What are the differences between the old live Shingles vaccine and new non-live Shingles vaccine?

Although the live Shingles vaccine is a single dose, it can reduce the risk of shingles by 51%, post-herpetic neuralgia by 67%, and the overall burden of illness by 61%. The live Shingles vaccine also becomes less effective the older one gets, and the effectiveness reduces approximately 10 years after vaccination.

The new non-live Shingles vaccine requires two doses 2 to 6 months apart, and has a substantially higher efficacy than the live vaccine, reducing risk of shingles by 97%. Initial studies suggest a single dose does not produce a robust immune response, therefore attendance for both doses is important to ensure continued immunity. Unlike the live Shingles vaccine, the efficacy of new non-live Shingles vaccine is high even for patients over 70.

The new non-live shingles vaccine might carry a greater risk of side effects (non-serious) at injection sites such as pain, redness and swelling. Side effects of the new non-live shingles vaccine are more frequent after the second dose than after the first.

The new non-live shingles vaccine is safe and effective in patients previously vaccinated with the live shingles vaccine.

Can the new non-live Shingles vaccine be given to anyone with a compromised immune system?

Unlike the old live Shingles vaccine, Shingrix, the new non-non live vaccine can be given to those who have compromised immune systems . Those who are immunocompromised, such as those with cancers or HIV infection, or those taking immunosuppressive medicines such as steroids are at greater risk of developing Shingles. The old live Shingles vaccine, Zostavax, cannot be given to those who are immunocompromised.

I have had shingles infection; can I receive the new non-live Shingles vaccine?

Yes, if you have had shingles infection in the past you can have the new non-live Shingles vaccine to help prevent any future occurrences. There is no official recommendation on when to receive the vaccine but it is best to wait until the shingles rash as disappeared before starting the vaccination course.

I received the old live Shingles vaccine. Can I still have the new non-live Shingles vaccine?

Yes, if you have received the old live Shingles vaccine, either privately or on the NHS, you are able to have 2 doses of the new Shingles vaccine.

Can anyone have the new non-live Shingles vaccine?

The vaccine is licensed to adults over 50 years and there is no upper age limit for either vaccine. The new non-live Shingles vaccine provides much higher protection in all age groups, especially in those over 70 years.

Will there be any side effects from the new non-live Shingles vaccine?

There are some mild side effects following vaccination with the new Shingles vaccines. These include:

  • Redness and/or swelling at the injection site
  • Headache, tiredness & fatigue (general cold & flu like symptoms)

These side effects typically last 2 or 3 days, unlike pain from Shingles which can last a lifetime after infection.

I feel healthy; am I really at risk of shingles?

Around 99% of the population have had chickenpox, the virus that if reactivated causes shingles. It is estimated that 1 in 4 people will develop shingles in their lifetime, a risk that increases as we get older. No matter how healthy you feel, as your immune system declines with age, you are at an increased risk for shingles.

How much do the shingles vaccines cost?

Zostavax (old live vaccine) The cost of this vaccine is £135 – 1 dose required

Shingrix (new non-live vaccine) The cost of this vaccine is £225 per dose – 2 doses required 2-6 months apart. We require pre-payment for the full course when booking due to the limited supply of this vaccine.

We believe these are the best prices on offer across London for either Shingles vaccine. Don’t miss out and get in touch now!

Travel Clinic

We offer an NHS vaccination service for travellers. It is important when you are planning to travel abroad that you  make an appointment with a Practice Nurse 6 to 8 weeks before you travel.   Our travel consultations are very popular and do get booked up quickly, so it is important to book early to avoid disappointment.

The following travel vaccines are available free on the NHS and are the only ones we offer:

  • polio (given as a  combined diphtheria/tetanus/polio jab )
  • hepatitis A

These vaccines are free because they protect against diseases thought to represent the greatest risk to public health if they were brought into the country.

Please be aware that we no longer provide private travel vaccinations . We ask you to arrange your own private travel consultation at a clinic of your choice to discuss with them any additional vaccinations that your trip may require.

You’ll have to pay for travel vaccinations against:

  • hepatitis B
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • tick-borne encephalitis
  • tuberculosis (TB)
  • yellow fever

Yellow fever vaccines are only available from  designated centres .

The cost of travel vaccines that are not available on the NHS will vary, depending on the vaccine and number of doses you need. We do not offer these vaccinations.

There is further information about countries and vaccinations required below.

Use of Diazepam to help with a fear of flying :

At London Lane Clinic, we will NOT prescribe Diazepam for patients who wish to use it for fear of flying. We have made this decision for the following reasons:

  • Diazepam is a sedative.
  • Sedative drugs can make you fall asleep which could place you at an increased risk to developing blood clots (DVT) especially if your flight is over 4 hours long.
  • Diazepam is a benzodiazepine and a small proportion of people experience effects of agression, disinhibition and behave in ways that they normally wouldn’t do. This could impact on safety of you and your fellow travellers or could lead you to get in trouble with the law.
  • National prescribing guidelines don’t allow the use of benzodiazepines in cases of phobia.
  • In several countries, diazepam and similar drugs are illegal.
  • Diazepam has a long half-life which means it stays in your system for a significant period of time and you may fail random drug testing if you are subjected to such testing.

Our private GP services are based on a clinical practice that was established over 30 years ago . SameDayDoctor was the first of the new type of walk in private GP clinics established in London and now has four clinics , three in London and one in Manchester. Our flagship private GP clinic in Queen Anne Street offers a walk-in service seven days a week, and because we have several clinical staff operating at all times (rather than a single private doctor working alone), waiting times are kept to a minimum. If you are feeling unwell or concerned about your general health, you should see a private GP as soon as possible, and we pride ourselves on offering same-day GP appointments to all of our patients.

At our clinics in London and Manchester, we aim to help with whatever your health needs, provide immediate treatment, and arrange fast, confidential testing, often with same-day test results. Most patients wait less than 20 minutes to be seen, on average. You can visit a private GP today in one of our medical centres, talk to a private GP on the phone , exchange emails with a private doctor, or buy STD testing kits from our online shop.

SameDayDoctor is happy to be your regular private GP and provide you with personal and ongoing health services, or we can see you for a ‘one-off’ confidential problem with no need to register. We are committed to offering professional, expert, and discreet care to all of our patients and are fully regulated by the CQC (Care Quality Commission).

Incredible service – so helpful Excellent service! Chazile went above and beyond to prepare me for my travels to south east Asia. Very kind, sharp and added helpful bits of information that will be useful during my travels. Even created a vaccine booklet for me that I asked for to keep track of my vaccines for the future. Highly recommended The London Vaccination Clinic. Thanks again Chazile 🙂 Nick

Travel vacines

Attended a consultation for travel vacines, the nurse explained everything with care, provided good advice. We then add a follow up consultation with a different nurse for the vaccines and was also very kind and professional. Was very impressed, we did not feel pressured to have more vacines then reasonable and both nurses gave pricing information upfront.

Very positive experience

Really easy to book and the nurse who I saw in Liverpool Street was really kind and helpful. She went through my vaccination history, what I needed for my trip and explained everything I needed to know ahead of administrating the vaccine I needed. I am glad I arrived early as the venue was tricky to find as the name of the building has changed so doesn’t match Google maps. Put me in a slight panic as I thought I was going to miss my appointment but I found it in the end!

Thorough and helpful consult

Solar eclipse maps showed 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse people could see across the U.S.

By Aliza Chasan

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:00 AM EDT / CBS News

A total solar eclipse  crossed North America Monday with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps showed  where and when astronomy fans could see the big event  as skies darkened in the middle of the day Monday, April 8.

The total eclipse first appeared along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then traveled across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon fully blocked out the sun , according to NASA. The path ranged between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

Solar eclipse path of totality map for 2024

United states map showing the path of the 2024 solar eclipse and specific regions of what the eclipse duration will be.

The total solar eclipse started over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that experienced totality was Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT, according to NASA. From there, the path continued into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse exited continental North America at around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality included portions of the following states:

  • Pennsylvania
  • New Hampshire

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. were included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others saw a partial eclipse. These were some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — though the weather was a factor :

  • San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
  • Austin, Texas
  • Waco, Texas
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Dayton, Ohio
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Buffalo, New York
  • Rochester, New York
  • Syracuse, New York
  • Burlington, Vermont

Map of when the solar eclipse reached totality across its path

The eclipse began in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the following few hours.

Eclipse map of totality

NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. People could have also  checked their ZIP code on NASA's map  to see when the eclipse was to reach them if they were on, or near, the path of totality — or if they saw a partial eclipse instead.

How much of the eclipse did people see if they live outside the totality path?

While the April 8 eclipse covered a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may have spotted a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer they were to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that was hidden.

NASA allowed viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun was to be covered in their locations.

Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?

Some areas along the path of totality had a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.

You could have checked the latest forecast for your location with our partners at The Weather Channel .

Where did the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?

Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, got to experience totality for the longest. Totality there lasted 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA.

Most places along the centerline of the path of totality saw a totality duration of between 3.5 and 4 minutes, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. came close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, had a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse they had on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.

The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.
