Hiking from Nagarkot to Dhulikhel in Kathmandu Valley

Hiking in Nepal / February 20, 2020 by fulltimeexplorer / 6 Comments

As much as I love trekking, it can get expensive and time consuming. Lately, I’ve been looking for different ways to experience nature in Nepal without having to commit to weeks in the mountains. Nepal has so many wonderful day hikes and short treks to offer and the hike from Nagarkot to Dhulikhel might be one of my favorites. We decided to trek in January when most of the high altitude treks are closed for the winter. Because of our timing, I’ve deemed this trek the “Mustard Trek.” The hills between Nagarkot and Dhulikhel are filled with terrace style farmland and in January they are filled with beautiful yellow flowers which happen to be mustard plants!

While most of my directions for the Kathmandu Valley Trek are easy to follow, or can be represented well in the map, hiking from Nagarkot to Dhulikhel was surprisingly difficult to navigate. The map provided should only be used to give you an idea of the hiking route because new trails and roads are developing every day, and some of the paths we took don’t appear on the map shown below. It’s best to have an offline map like maps.me downloaded prior to leaving or take a local guide. We spoke Nepali to locals and they were able to help us find the way, but there was one section that was hard to navigate even with the locals help.

Nagarkot to Dhulikhel Overview

Walking Time: 6 hours

Total Time:  7 hours with a lunch break, tea breaks, and lots of time to take photos

Difficulty Level: Moderate – This trip is difficult to navigate without an offline map. Google does not have a lot of the routes listed. If you have an offline map, it should be easy to navigate. Physically, this is not a very difficult day. You will go down some steep descents, so trekking poles are recommended to take pressure off your knees. This is a good trek for beginners and should be easy as long as you are in decent shape.

Before You Go: Download an offline map like maps.me and have your phone fully charged. Pack snacks and bring trekking poles.

Hotels in Nagarkot

Best Budget Hotel: Everest Manla Resort ($31 USD per couple). I normally wouldn’t consider $31 to be a budget room, but the $31 got us a large comfortable room with a private bathroom, hot water, limited WiFi, and breakfast included. You can find a $20 room in town, but you won’t be able to open your door to a picture perfect view like you can at Everest Manla Resort.

Best Mid-Range Hotel: Peaceful Cottage ($50 USD per couple). We went in January, and it was freezing cold. The room had HEAT (a rare thing in Nepal). We had it blasting, and it was totally worth the money. What won me over was the incredible view from the three different balconies. We were able to wake up, walk upstairs, and have one of the best views in Nagarkot proper. It also included free breakfast, had hot showers, and a comfy bead.

Best High-End Hotel: Hotel Country Villa ($70 USD – $350 per couple). We stayed here for Valentine’s Day one year. The hotel has a lodge like feel and sits at the edge of a steep hill with epic mountain views. Their basic rooms are small and a little dark with wood paneling, but every room here has a beautiful view unlike other hotels in the area. The food at the buffet style dinner was delicious and the bathroom had a wonderfully hot shower.

Best Luxury Hotel: Hotel Mystic Mountain ($130 USD – $500 per couple). We stopped here for lunch and asked for a tour. This place is like a mirage in a desert. The staff was insanely friendly. We walked in looking like hell, wearing trekking gear, sweating, and our boots were covered in mud. But, we were welcomed in as if we were dressed to the nines. I love that this place was so beautiful and not at all pretentious. The rooms are luxurious. There’s an in ground pool. The views look like they go on forever. And, the restaurant offered delicious food.

Hotels in Dhulikhel

Budget Hotel in Dhulikhel: Tashidelek Guest Lodge & House ($16 USD per couple)

Book on BOOKING.COM

Comfort Hotel in Dhulikhel: Gaia Holiday Home ($45 USD per couple) Gaia Holiday Home is probably one of my favorite places I’ve stayed in Nepal. The rooms are extremely clean and have incredible views of the mountains. It’s like a painting is hanging on the wall, but it’s real. Our room had a balcony and private bathroom. The shower had very hot water which made it feel like a sauna in winter time. The food here is also great (especially the chicken curry).

Luxury Hotel in Dhulikhel: The Dwarika’s Resort ($485 per couple) If you’re looking for the ultimate in luxury, then The Dwarika’s Resort is it. Suraj and I were given a night at the resort as a wedding gift, and it was literally the nicest place I’ve ever stayed. The resort is focused on wellness and some of the activities included in your stay are a meditation room, yoga classes, a Himalayan salt room, a crystal room, an Ayurvedic consultation, and more. I left the resort feeling so relaxed and calm after just one night. The food there is also phenomenal. If you want to splurge, this is the place to do it.

Nagarkot to Dhulikhel Directions

When you leave Nagarkot, you’ll want to take a left out of town and follow the main road for a bit. We actually spent a night at Everest Manla Resort , so we walked the first 45 minutes of the hike the day before. Since we went the day prior, we decided to walk in the afternoon and take our time getting there. On the way we decided to make a little stop at the famous Hotel Mystic Mountain which is known as one of the best hotels in Nepal. Sadly, our budget couldn’t afford a night at the hotel, but we could afford lunch there. If you are coming from the center of Nagarkot, I recommend getting breakfast there or at least stopping in for tea. It was such a nice luxurious escape from our normal hiking routine.

We left Everest Manla Resort at 9:00am. (If you’re coming from Nagarkot proper, I’d recommend leaving at 8:00am.) If you don’t stay at the resort, there’s a small tea shop/ picnic spot right before the hotel where you can get a really nice view. About 200m after the tea shop/resort you’ll want to take the first left to take a shortcut. Currently, it’s a dirt and gravel road without much traffic.

Next, you’ll make a sharp left turn which will look like you’re almost going backwards. If you reach a fancy resort, then you’ve gone too far. At the second fork stay to the left. This will turn into more of a trail than a road, but will turn back into a dirt road later on. From here you go straight on this road until you reach almost the top of the hill you’ve been climbing all morning. This road is currently under construction and it looked like a really large dirt highway when we visited.

Once you are almost at the top you’ll see a small yellow sign advising hiker to go to the right. Since none of this appears on Google Maps, there was some debate about which way to go from here. There were several smaller paths all going different ways, but you’ll want to stay on the main path going right. We ran into three beautiful local women who not only pointed us in the right direction, but told us they would walk us to the next turn.

These women come into the hills once a week to gather a special kind of plant to feed their livestock down in the valley near Nala. Each woman gathered the greens along with wood and carried it by themselves. They told me each one carried about 30 kgs (66 lbs)!!! As we walked, I asked if they were tired and one said, “We aren’t allowed to feel tired until we’re home.” They were probably the most mentally strong (and physically strong) women I’d ever met. Suddenly, my 10 lbs backpack felt like it weighed nothing.

The path we walked on with the women is a lovely path that winds around the hill. You can follow it until you see a lookout point. It’s a small cement pad with a tin roof over it. Instead of following the trail to the right, you’ll go to the left of it and follow the “thousand steps” down. It’s fairly steep here, and I needed to use my trekking poles.

After the stairs, follow the main road downhill. On the right is a small restaurant and hotel. This is a great place to have lunch since there are not a lot of restaurants on the route from Nagarkot to Dhulikhel. We arrived there (Kashi Bhanjyang) for lunch around 12:00pm.

After eating, follow the road toward the cliff side of the hill and turn right. Follow this path all the way around the mountain. Here you’ll see tons of farms growing yellow flowers. These are actually mustard plants. Mustard seeds grow in the pods. When they are harvested, they are left to dry in the sun. Then, they are either ground into powder, sold as seed, or turned into oil.

You’ll see a small trail to the left towards the top of the hill, you can follow this straight along the edge and back down the other side. It’ll wrap slowly around farm terraces on the other side. This is the part of the route we found really confusing. There were a lot of turns and options and not enough people to ask for directions. Even a couple of girls ahead of us who had maps.me seemed confused at this section. You can follow the main road from here, but there’s a shortcut in the village where you turn left at a hot pink house and then make another left and head downhill and pick up the road later on.

Follow this road downhill until you hit the main village of Rabi Bhanjyang. Turn right onto the main road and then a quick left at the temple. There’s a small sign directing you to Dhulikhel. Here you’ll head uphill and onto a road that goes through the woods. On the other side, you’ll follow the road downhill and turn left at the tiny shop to continue down towards the city. We arrived to Dhulikhel city center at 3:45pm, however we stopped to talk to people and take photos. We also took an hour for lunch so this was a really leisurely pace.

Nagarkot Trek | 2 Day Hike from Changu Narayan to Dhulikhel

Two day trek in the monsoon from Changu Narayan, Nagarkot and Dhulikhel in Nepal

If you fancy an easy trek and whilst visiting Kathmandu, Central Nepal, and like me, you’re on a tight schedule, then a two-day Nagarkot trek from Changu Narayan to Dhulikhel, on the rim of the  Kathmandu Valley  is a perfect choice.

Day 1 – Changu Narayan To Nagarkot

Trek 4-5 hours

Elevation 2175 m/7,136 ft

The ancient, pagoda-style Changunarayan Temple, dedicated to Vishnu and a Hindu pilgrimage site, is a real gem. It is the smallest and least visited of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, mainly due to its location. It is at the top of a hill about a 50-minute drive from Kathmandu itself, in the Newari village where they still do wood and stone carvings as they have done over the centuries.

Changu Narayan contains the oldest Hindu Temple in the Kathmandu Valley. Dedicated to the god Vishnu, Changu Narayan was created by the Lichhavi kings of old as one of the four protection points of the Valley. The streets are flagstone and stepped with deep taps where women still come to get water as well as do their laundry.

Changu Narayan Temple in Kathmandu Valley in Nepal

The Nagarkot to Dhulikhel Trek follows upward along the Valley ridge past Brahmin and Tamang villages along with terraced farms. We can see both the Himalayas as well as the Valley below us.

You stumble upon the Buddha Peace Park which is instantly recognisable by the huge gold majestic Buddha facing out to the adjacent views of Kathmandu Valley. You can also, plant a tree in a Buddha Peace Park in memory of your loved one, on your anniversary, your birthday, or your special day at (Rs. 350 for each one) including the transport if you are not available to plant the tree. Once planted, it will be the responsibility of the Peace Park management to water and nurture it.

Goats on the Nargarkot Trek in Kathmandu Valley

We landed in Nagarkot village to enjoy traditional Nepalese cuisine in a local diner called AC’s Fast Food Cafe. After refueling, we continued towards Hotel Mystic Mountain passing by the army no-go areas, you could see the troops training on the grounds. Nagarkot village is known for its views of the Himalayas, including Mount Everest to the northeast, which is especially striking at sunrise and sunset, unfortunately, as I trekked in monsoon June there was too much cloud to get a postcard-perfect sunset.

Day 2 – Nagarkot To Dhulikhel

Setting off at 5.30 am, the sun was rising behind the clouds that covered the mountains as far as the eye could see. Although this isn’t the standard vivid sunrise, it was nonetheless breathtaking. All you could hear were birds singing and the monkeys screeching as they played in the lush green forest, it was super peaceful. Many butterflies fluttered around in the morning mist, this is what I call a perfect start to the day.

Vanessa from She Wanders Miles starting trekking from Nagarkot in the monsoon mist

On a clear day, you can see the ranges of Gosainkunda, Ganesh Himal, Mt. Manaslu, and the Annapurna Mountains. It’s possible to see Mt. Everest (the world’s tallest peak) in the east to Mt. Dhaulagiri (the 7th highest peak in the world) in the west on a clear day.

Tonchok Mountain near Dhulikhel in Kathamndu Valley, Nepal

After the sun rose, the mist cleared and was glad to have made the early start to avoid trekking in the sun. We made it up and over a few mountains, one part was down steps then the final ascent up the terraced mountain brought us to Tonchok Mountain View Resort where we stopped to eat our packed breakfast.

We were served coffee by the Tamang lady in between her washing her sons’ hair and doing the laundry in the bucket outside. The father arrived with crops in his hand which he then cleaned and chopped. The father brought out the baby who’d awoken from his sleep, what a happy bundle of joy. It’s certainly a simple life eating off the land and earning small amounts from passing tourists.

Tamang father with his baby on Tonchuk Mountain, Kathmandu Valley in Nepal

We continued down through more villages, and we saw women carrying food on huge baskets on their backs for the livestock, families all taking part in building new homes including a very old woman, she could’ve been around 85 years old but she was still shovelling gravel very slowly with a hand trowel, everyone pitches in it seems.

There was a family by a hut, a mother, a father, and 3 children, the father was clearly drunk and hurling abuse at his wife who had her head down in front of him. I’m told this can be commonplace as the women can never leave their husbands in their culture so they have to put up and shut up which saddened me.

We passed two young sisters holding hands around 5 and 7 years old on their way to school, as it was only early our guide asked how long they still has to walk to get there… only 1 hour more!

The final stretch was a tarmac road as we headed into Dhulikiel, a town of Newari heritage at an altitude of 1550m. Dhulikhel was once known by the Buddhist name of Shrikhandapur and still has a few Buddhist stupas in memory of the old days. You’ll also find several ancient temples dedicated to Sweta Bhairava, Hari Siddhi, Shiva, Narayana, and Gaukhureswor temple, which represent the medieval Nepalese culture, heritage, and tradition maintained to this day.

Nagarkot Trek: Travel Essentials

Trekking tour company in thamel.

In Kathmandu, you’ll find Thamel is awash with tour companies so it’s hard to know who to go with. You’ll even find men chatting to you as you walk the streets and then announce they have a trekking company so best to do your research to make sure you get a good company.

I went with  Himalayan Planet  which I’d found on Instagram before I arrived, my stay was short so my dates were specific and for that reason was happy to pay for a solo trip. The communication was great throughout as they tailored the trip to suit me. You’ll find Himalayan Planet in the alleyway opposite  Kathmandu Guest House . High five to Pankaj, my guide, he was awesome!

Time Of Year To Go To Nagarkot

Monsoon in Nepal is from June to August when the climate is hot and a little humid, you can expect rain or thunderstorms too. I went in June and the days were perfect, there a few spots of rain but mainly sunshine. Nargakot is renowned for the sunrise and sunset views of the Himalayas so September to May is really the best time to go to be lucky enough to see these.

Where To Stay In Nagarkot

Considering the size of the village, you’ll be surprised at how many hotels you’ll find in  Nagarkot , a bed to suit every budget!

Hotel Mystic Mountain  where I stayed is on the more luxurious side, highly recommended. This 4-star accommodation has an outdoor pool, jacuzzi, and barbecue looking out onto the Himalayas. There is a bar and a restaurant where you can enjoy a buffet or A La Carte dining.

Hotel Himalayan Villa  is a 3-star hotel spread over 2 acres of land. The restaurant serves Indian and International delights.

Peaceful Cottage and Cafe du Mont  offers picturesque views of the Himalayas and boasts an in-house restaurant serving Nepalese, Indian, Chinese, and continental as well as vegetarian cuisines.

Stay Safe In Nepal

Nepal is generally a safe country for travel. However, for your  backpacking trip in Nepal , always make sure your travel insurance is sorted!  HeyMondo is a recommended company to use.

Get 5% off your travel insurance with HeyMondo . Benefit from 24-hour medical assistance, 365 days a year with single, multi-trip, and long-stay insurance, cover for Covid-19, and non-refundable expenses. The handy app makes this a simple process! They give a little back too by contributing to ‘Doctors Without Borders’.

Sounds like a challenge! I’m always up for a good trek and I hear Nepal is a great country for some good ones

It wasn’t too challenging, Nepal has some amazing landscapes to go trekking!

Hotel Mystic Mountain looks a little bit awesome. Almost making the trek worth making alone 🙂

Hotel Mystic Mountain was an awesome hotel, totally recommend it!

This is such a fantastic guide! I know lots of people do multi-day hikes but these shorter options sound much more like something I would do. I love the sound of all the different temples on the first day and so nice to see that people are still going about their day despite the arrival of tourism.

I really enjoyed this trek, it’s great that it’s only an hour away from Kathmandu too!

What an experience! I’d love to visit Nepal one of these days!

I’d head over there if you get the chance, it’s a wonderful country.

The Dhulikhel trek gives you a unique opportunity to explore the beauty of nature, rural Nepal, and wonderful Mountain View. The trail is full of comfortable green fields and beautiful ancient settlements. People of these settlements are still farmers and follow the way of traditional life.

This route offers ample opportunities to observe the magnificent views of the Himalayan range like Gaurishankar, Langtang, Ganesh, Dorje Lakpa, etc. The area is famous for its wildlife and bird watching. Frequently asked questions about this trip

How difficult is the trek.

The difficulty depends on where and how long you want to trek. The short trek is easy while the long trek requires some physical fitness.

What is altitude sickness?

Altitude sickness is normally known as acute mountain sickness. This can happen when people rapidly climb up to an altitude of more than 3000 meters. We ensure minimal risk by adding rest to our trekking itineraries. Most people will feel some effects of altitude, some shortness of breath and possibly light headache, this is normal enough. Acute mountain sickness patients are quite different and usually have a serious headache, sickness, and lose awareness. In almost all possible cases there are sufficient warning signs to take action properly. Descending to a lower altitude is usually enough to prevent any further problems.

What type of accommodation is available during the trekking?

There are mainly tea houses and lodges available for trekking and they are usually made using local materials and are very comfortable. These accommodations are often family-run and usually provide single and double rooms. The dining room is on the ground floor and is often on fire. All food will be cooked in order in the family kitchen. Toilet facilities are sometimes separate and sometimes outside. Most lodges provide mattresses and blankets. It's a good idea to always have a sleeping bag, which can be useful, and perhaps an inflatable pillow.

How long do we walk every day on trekking?

Trekking programs are classified into three different categories: soft, moderate and hard. Soft treks are only about 7 days to 10 days in duration. They generally do not go above 4000 meters; you can expect to walk about 4-5 hours each day. Moderate treks are challenging enough and long treks that go to the high hill country. Physically exhausting, this involves trekking along the cliffs of the mountains for about 6-8 hours. Harder treks are longer treks that go farther away from the general abode of trekkers and tourists. These physically challenging treks involve walking for 7- 9 hours each day.

How much weight do I need to carry on the trek?

You carry some of your personal belongings, such as warm clothing, water, snacks, sun block, cameras and more. Generally, these items will be lightweight, from 5 to 10kg (10 to 20 pounds). Our porters are available for other heavy goods and for your information one porter would be sharing by two people. The maximum weight carried by one porter is total 20 kg. this means 10 kg. per person is allowed for the trek. In case if you wish to carry more than this weight then you need to hire additional porters.

What is the best time for trekking in Nepal?

October and November are considered as the best times for trekking in Nepal due to dry season. December and January are also considered good times for trekking but it is extremely cold at high altitudes.

nagarkot to dhulikhel trek

Elisabeth Meusy

Thank you a lot for your organization about my trek. It was a superb experience; all was perfect. Karma is a very nice person and a good guide. I appreciated trekking with Odyssey (a reliable Nepal trek operator). If I come back to Nepal, I will be happy to ask you to trek with me again. I am thinking about Annapurna or the Everest trek.

*****(5 star)

Have just returned from my fourth trip to Nepal and as always Odyssey Treks organized everything superbly. We visited Makalu relatively late in the season and were rewarded with empty trails and amazing weather. Karma was as entertaining, friendly, and informative as ever along with Ang Dawa Sherpa who together made the three weeks perfect.

They also organized a few days to Helambu at short notice as I had some time spare, all done easily and professionally. Thanks for the company both and I will be back again. I cannot recommend Odyssey highly enough as a genuinely friendly, locally based company that provides not only unforgettable experiences but also great service at a very reasonable cost.

Trekking Style

Chisopani/Nagarkot/Dhulikhel

Nepal has been always a nation of traders and current day trekking trail involves from ancient trade routes. Today trekkers walk in the countless foothills with terrific view of Himalayan ranges on the background. A short drive to trail head Sundarijal (18KM) north east of Kathmandu valley takes avoids you trafficked and crowd. Trail continues through the typical villages and huge dense forest of  Shivapuri National Park . Our trek prolongs with fantastic sunset and sunrise inspecting large green valleys.

Nagarkot  (2175m) is probably the best place to view the Himalaya from the comfort of your Hotel balcony.  A scenic  hike to Dhulikhel  a quieter, less developed place and to observe the high Himalayas adds the extra thrill in the trip.  Trail to  Namo Buddha  offers an ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture and night stay in Monastery, dinner with monk and meditation can be a lifetime memory. A legend village Panauti has some ancient temples which have stood the test of time partly because of Panauti’s legendary resistance of earthquake. Panauti was major trading centre with its own royal palace but today the village is serene backwater, and all the more appealing for that. This cultural trip introduces Nepal and Nepalese in details, though it’s short countryside excursion.

fantastic and amazing trip

I and my husband did a hiking trip from Dhulikhel to Nagarkot in August 2017. It was very easy to book and a good driver with a modern car took us from Kathmandu to Dhulikhel and from Nagarkot to Kathmandu.

Our guide Pradeep was a perfectly professional and friendly guide who not only guided us from Dhulikhel to Nagarkot but also knew a lot of things about the way of life in the area, agriculture, culture, etc.

With all this knowledge, his positive attitude and a very good level of English we definitely got the best out of this trip. We strongly recommend Mission Himalaya Treks And Expeditions Pvt.Ltd and especially this perfect guide Pradeep for anyone who wants to do a short (or longer) hiking trip in Nepal!

And lots of thanks to the owner of the company Mr.Birendra for organizing a fantastic and amazing trip for us.

All are always helpful, informative and fun

We had a good holiday with Mission Himalaya, and the local guides Chandra Dharke while we trekking Chisapani Nagarkot and sightseeing in Kathmandu. All are always helpful, informative and fun.
