  • What is a Contour Pillow?

best-contour-pillows

Also called orthopedic or cervical pillows, contour pillows are curved pillows specifically designed to closely support your head and neck. Other types of pillows are flat and adapt to your head. Conversely, contour pillows already feature curves to match your head and neck’s shape.

Contour pillows aren’t all the same shape. Some contour pillows feature two arches and a dip, while others have a hollow in the center for your head. Different contour pillows provide their features and benefits.

  • Benefits of Using a Contour Pillow

Contour pillows can be a bit uncomfortable when you first start sleeping on them, but for many people, their immense benefits outweigh the initial discomfort. Sleeping on a contour pillow can improve your spinal alignment, alleviate muscle and joint pain, and reduce snoring and sleep apnea symptoms. Plus, they work for many different sleep styles.

Supports Spinal Alignment

Contour pillows provide support for your neck and head, keeping them aligned with the rest of your spine. Proper spinal alignment is crucial for helping you sleep comfortably and ensuring you won’t wake up stiff, achy, or in pain.

Relieves Pain

Soothing joint and muscular pain is one of the biggest reasons people use contour pillows. Frankly, healthy spinal alignment and pain relief so hand-in-hand. By keeping your spine neutral, there’s less stress on any part of your body, helping you relax and wake up without pain.

Contour pillows cushion the joints around your head and neck, making it easier to relax at night. If you use a body contour pillow—such as a knee pillow —you protect your legs from rubbing against each other and leading to pain.

Alleviates Snoring and Sleep Apnea Symptoms

Using a contour pillow is helpful if you struggle with chronic snoring or obstructive sleep apnea. Contour pillows raise your head and neck slightly, opening your airways and making it easier to sleep.

Of course, a pillow won’t guarantee that your snoring and sleep apnea will go away entirely. Instead, contour pillows help minimize these symptoms, making it easier to sleep undisturbed.

Suitable for Multiple Sleeping Positions

You don’t have to sleep a certain way to enjoy the benefits of a contour pillow. Most contour pillows provide adequate support for both back and side sleepers, ensuring they maintain good posture, experience pain relief, and breathe properly.

Still, contour pillows are generally not an option for stomach sleepers. Most contour pillows feature an arch for your neck to rest on, but when laying on your front, your throat will press into this arch, causing pain and potentially obstructing your breathing.

  • Common Pillow Fills for Contour Pillows

Not all contour pillows are equally effective. Your contour pillow’s fill affects its durability, supportiveness, and breathability. The most popular pillow fills are made from foam or fibers, but you can also find unique fills such as buckwheat.

Memory Foam

Memory foam is a popular fill for contour pillows since it does a great job of soothing pain and pressure points. Some memory foam pillows can get hot, so we recommend looking for plant-based, gel-infused, or graphite-infused memory foam.

Memory foam pillows come in both shredded and solid variations for contour pillows.

Shredded memory foam contour pillows contain small pieces of memory foam for a soft and malleable pillow, while solid memory foam pillows contain a single block of memory foam for a firmer and more supportive pillow. Solid memory foam is more common for contour pillows, but you can find either.

Latex foam is a naturally breathable, supportive, and durable pillow fill. It’s not quite as pressure-relieving as memory foam, but latex’s responsiveness and cooling properties make up for this. Not only that, but latex is eco-friendly and biodegradable.

Although latex is hypoallergenic, it’s not an option for people with latex allergies. Synthetic and blended latex options are out there, but they simply aren’t as high-quality as natural latex, which is why we recommend avoiding these types of pillows. Some latex foam is harvested organically, making latex pillows one of the most popular organic pillows on the market. If you like the concept of latex pillows but have a latex allergy, look into memory foam pillows instead.

Down is a natural pillow fill made from the feathers around goose and duck bellies. Down pillows are fluffy, soft, and don’t have the spiky quills regular feather pillows have.

Although some contour pillows are made fully or partially from down, down isn’t the most supportive pillow fill out there. It’s luxurious and lightweight, no doubt, but it won’t provide the same level of pressure relief as foam pillows will.

More supportive down pillows have a fill power—the amount of down per cubic inch—of 600 or more, but this comes with a high price tag.

Down Alternative

Down alternative pillows are a good choice for people with allergies or those with a tight budget. This hypoallergenic pillow emulates the feel and fluffiness of down without the high cost or the animal products.

However, down alternative pillows aren’t as plush or durable as true down.  Even with regular fluffing, down alternative pillows will go flat or lumpy much sooner than down. Similarly, down alternative traps heat and moisture, further breaking down the pillow.

Buckwheat—also called Sobakawa—pillows were first popularized in Japan for their natural firmness and support and nowadays, they’re popular internationally. The pillows are filled with the hulls of buckwheat seeds and are responsive, breathable, and durable. Buckwheat is biodegradable, hypoallergenic, and resistant to dust mites and other bacteria, as well.

The primary issue with buckwheat pillows is that they are noisy and not always as comfortable as other pillows. The buckwheat hulls can crunch together and they can feel stiff under your head, which is unappealing.

Are contour pillows worth it?

Contour pillows are a great option for sleepers looking for extra neck support or pain relief. They can be a bit pricey, but the payoff in terms of pain relief and comfort makes up for it.

At the same time, contour pillows aren’t necessary for everyone. Stomach sleepers may find the thickness of contour pillows to be too much, and the arches can dig into their necks. Similarly, standard rectangle pillows can be just as great as contour pillows, especially if you aren’t experiencing pain or any health conditions affecting your sleep.

What is the best contour pillow for neck pain?

Some of the best pillows for neck pain include the Amerisleep Flex Pillow, the Zoma Pillow, the Eli & Elm Side-Sleeper Pillow, and the Royal Therapy Memory Foam Pillow.

Look for a pillow with an arch that goes under your neck. This ensures your neck is properly supported, minimizing neck pain and the symptoms associated with it, such as headaches, migraines, shoulder pain, and difficulty sleeping. Pillows for neck pain often have a concave shape that fits beneath the neck.

What is the best ergonomic pillow?

A good ergonomic pillow should keep your head and neck neutral with your spine regardless of what position you sleep in. Many contour pillows are also called ergonomic pillows because they’re designed to optimize your comfort and support. This ensures your body is in a healthy position and you wake up pain-free.

Should the shoulders be on a pillow when sleeping?

No, nearly all pillows are designed to support your head and neck only, not your shoulders. Placing your shoulders onto your pillow nullifies the purpose of a pillow since they leave your head and neck unsupported.

Unless a pillow clearly states your shoulders are meant to rest on the pillow—such as with a body pillow or wedge pillow—avoid resting your shoulders on it.

What is the correct way to use a contour pillow?

The correct way of using a contour pillow depends on the pillow itself since not all contour pillows have the same shape.

Some contour pillows have a “wave” shape, meaning it has two arches of different heights and a dip in the middle. Sleep with your neck resting on the taller arch and your head on the dip if you sleep on your side. If you sleep on your back, sleep with your neck on the lower arch and your head on the dip.

For contour pillows with a hollow in the center, rest your head on the hollow spot and your neck on the cushioned arches, regardless of whether you sleep on your side or back.

Whether you’re struggling with neck pain at night or are looking for ways to stop your snoring, contour pillows have plenty to offer.

Not all contour pillows have the same shapes or features, so consider your personal preferences when weighing different options. Side sleepers might consider loftier contour pillows or models made specifically for them, while back sleepers may prefer adjustable contour pillows.

Cleaning Your Pillows

We always recommend spot-cleaning our pillows — never saturate them with any liquid. We always recommend to our customers that they add one of our protective Waterproof pillow covers , to ensure spills never get out of hand.

To spot clean, we suggest a mild solution of three parts water to one part vinegar in a spray bottle, but for particularly stubborn spills, a mild detergent is perfectly fine to add to the bottle as well.

Always ensure your pillow is thoroughly dried after a spot cleaning, either by using a hair dryer or placing it in the sun to air out.

How to Use A Contour Pillow The Right Way

How to Use A Contour Pillow The Right Way

Imagine waking up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated after a night of comfortable sleep. The secret to achieving this lies in the way you use your contour pillow. In this article, we will explore what a contour pillow is, how to use it effectively, the benefits it offers, and who can benefit the most from its unique design.

What is a Contour Pillow?

what is contour pillow

A contour pillow , also called an ergonomic or orthopaedic pillow, is designed to support the natural curvature of your head, neck, and shoulders.

Crafted from memory foam or other supportive materials, the contour pillow features a distinctive shape with varying levels of thickness, precisely contoured to accommodate various sleeping positions, including the back, side, and stomach, while providing optimal support during sleep.

How to Sleep on a Contour Pillow?

sleeping on contour pillow

Choose the Right Pillow: Start by selecting a contour pillow that suits your sleeping habits and preferences. Make sure it provides proper alignment for your head, neck, and spine.

Back Sleepers: If you're a back sleeper, position the higher side of the orthopaedic pillow under your neck and the lower side under your head. This helps maintain the natural curve of your spine and prevents strain.

Side Sleepers: For side sleepers, rest your head on the higher edge of the pillow with the lower edge supporting your neck. This keeps your spine aligned horizontally and minimises pressure points.

Stomach Sleepers: If you prefer sleeping on your stomach, use the flatter side of the curved pillow. This prevents excessive strain on your neck and keeps your head from being raised too high.

Adjustment Period: Give yourself a few nights to adjust to the new pillow. It might feel a bit different initially, but your body will adapt to the improved support and comfort.

Benefits of Using a Contour Pillow:

Proper Spinal Alignment: According to St. Leonards Physiotherapy , the most common cause of neck pain (and disturbed nights) is "prolonged abnormal posture during sleep. In order to address this issue, proper spinal alignment becomes crucial. The ergonomic pillow's thoughtfully designed structure actively promotes the correct alignment of the spine, effectively diminishing the risk of experiencing neck and back pain.

Cooling Comfort: Numerous high-quality curved pillows are crafted from latex and incorporate an open-cell structure, facilitating the flow of air within the pillow. This enables you to remain pleasantly cool and at ease during the entire night.

Pressure Point Relief: By distributing your body weight evenly, orthopaedic pillows help alleviate pressure points, enhancing overall comfort.

Reduced Snoring: Elevating your head slightly can help reduce snoring by keeping air passages open.

Enhanced Sleep Quality: With reduced discomfort and better support, you're likely to experience more restful sleep and wake up feeling revitalised.

Posture Improvement: Consistent use of a contour pillow can lead to improved posture during the day due to better neck and spine alignment during sleep.

Hypoallergenic: Contemporary contour pillows are crafted using top-notch materials possessing properties that fend off dust mites, bacteria, and fungi. These attributes are especially beneficial for individuals dealing with allergies and asthma. Additionally, these pillows deter the proliferation of bacteria that commonly contribute to the occurrence of acne.

Who Should Use a Contour Pillow?

Contour pillows are beneficial for a wide range of individuals, including:

Chronic Pain Sufferers: People dealing with chronic neck or back pain can find relief with an ergonomic pillow's targeted support.

Side Sleepers: The unique shape of contour pillows caters to side sleepers, promoting a comfortable and healthy sleeping posture. The contoured shape of these pillows supports side sleepers by aligning the head, neck, and spine, reducing discomfort and promoting better sleep quality.

Back Sleepers: Ergonomic pillows can provide excellent support for back sleepers as well. These pillows are designed to cradle the natural curvature of the head, neck, and shoulders. A pillow's ergonomic design helps keep the head elevated at an optimal level, reducing the likelihood of waking up with neck stiffness or discomfort.

A contour pillow is often an optimal choice for those suffering from back or neck pain, but other individuals could certainly enjoy the benefits of this type of pillow as well for a more restful sleep.

What to Consider When Choosing the Best Contour Pillow

Each contour pillow varies from other options on the market. Some pillows may feature different materials, have a unique shape, or be better suited for individuals who prefer a certain sleeping position. Other pillows might offer specific temperature-regulating capabilities or have special care instructions. Read on to learn about each of these features to determine the best contour pillow for your needs.

Most contour pillows are made from memory foam. The adaptive properties of memory foam allow it to conform to the head and neck to keep the spine in alignment, which is one of the main purposes of a contour pillow. However, not all memory foam is the same. When possible, consider a contour pillow that features CertiPUR-US certified memory foam.

This type of memory foam meets high standards for content, durability, and emissions, making it a superior choice. CertiPUR-US certified memory foam does not contain any heavy metals, formaldehyde, ozone depleters, or phthalates. It also has low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions to maintain air quality.

In addition to the material used to make the pillow, think about the material for the cover. Most contour pillows have either a bamboo or a cotton cover. Bamboo is a popular option since it can pull heat away from the body to keep individuals cool as they sleep. It is highly breathable to allow sufficient airflow for added comfort as well.

Bamboo is also an antimicrobial fabric, which means it can limit allergy symptoms and morning congestion by preventing bacteria from building up on the cover. Cotton is also breathable and can absorb sweat to keep individuals more comfortable overnight.

Shape and Support

The shape and support of a contour pillow are also important factors to consider while shopping. Contour pillows are available in a variety of shapes and designs, including head and neck pillows, wedge pillows , leg and knee pillows, and travel pillows . Head and neck pillows also feature different designs; some may have ends with varying heights to accommodate certain sleeping positions or offer a recessed area in the center for the neck.

Additionally, think about the support each contour pillow offers. Ideally, a contour pillow should offer sufficient support to cradle the neck and head in the ideal position to keep the spine aligned. Finding a pillow that is responsive can also help ensure that as your sleeping position changes, it will adapt to provide support where needed.

Sleeping Position

Keep your preferred sleeping position in mind as you search for the best contour pillow. Certain pillows may be better suited for side, back, or stomach sleepers. The best pillow for side sleepers will elevate the head a bit more to ensure the head, neck, and spine stay in alignment. Conversely, the best pillow for back sleepers and stomach sleepers will keep the head and neck a bit lower for optimal spinal alignment.

Many contour pillows feature two distinct heights to accommodate different sleep positions. One end is typically about 4.5 inches tall, while the other end is 3 to 4 inches tall. Some manufacturers design pillows with a removable center core that allows individuals to further customize the height to their exact comfort level. Removing the core on these pillows decreases the height of each end by about 1.5 inches.

Temperature Regulation

Temperature-regulating capabilities allow a contour pillow to keep individuals from growing too hot or cold as they sleep. Manufacturers can design a contour pillow in several ways to better regulate an individual’s body temperature. One design feature is a ventilated core. A contour pillow with a ventilated design allows for more air circulation. This is an important feature for individuals who tend to overheat, since memory foam retains more heat than other materials.

The memory foam of some contour pillows is infused with cooling gel. Unlike standard memory foam that can retain heat and cause nighttime overheating, gel-infused memory foam pulls heat away from an individual’s body to keep the user cooler and more comfortable overnight.

Breathability

Breathability is another important feature to look for in a contour pillow. Some contour pillows include a bamboo cover that helps keep individuals cooler as they sleep. Bamboo is highly breathable and works to help dissipate heat more effectively than some other materials.

As mentioned, a contour pillow with a ventilated design will also allow for more breathability and airflow to prevent the memory foam from trapping too much heat. This feature also contributes to a cooler and more comfortable night’s sleep.

Ease of Cleaning

Finally, consider how easy it will be to clean and care for the pillow. Contour pillows typically include a reusable cover. Finding one that is machine washable and dryer safe will simplify cleaning.

Some contour pillows also feature an additional inner cover that helps keep the memory foam pillow clean and dust-free. This cover protects the foam core and can also increase the pillow’s lifespan.

Gay Moscow Moscow City Guide

Moscow invariably hits the headlines for all the wrong reasons. And though the Russian capital isn’t particularly LGBTQ-friendly (Vladimir Putin’s annual shirtless photoshoot notwithstanding), we don’t think you should miss out on the most intriguing of Moscow points of interest because of it. Homosexuality is legal, although a vaguely-worded 2013 law prohibits the promotion of ‘non-traditional’ relationships. As such, gay travellers are advised against overt displays of their sexuality. That said, the vast majority of visits remain trouble-free, even for visitors who frequent the city’s less-than-secret gay bar and club scene.

The best hotels in Moscow

The historic exterior of the Hotel Metropol , facing the internationally-celebrated Bolshoi Theatre and close to many of the other main things to do in Moscow, is nothing compared to its sumptuous interiors. Its decor recalls the no-expense-spared philosophy of the grand imperial era that climaxed at the turn of the 1900s. Marble detailing, decorative plasterwork, and a breathtaking stained-glass roof enclosing the vast dining hall is the result. Though the hotel is large – with 365 rooms, there is a different bed for every day of the year – each room is uniquely shaped in the art deco style, ensuring a personal feel. The rooms at the Russo-Balt Hotel are also individually decorated, but in the earlier art nouveau style of swirling floral motifs, blown-glass chandeliers, and richly carved woods. Stand out features include a pillow menu and breakfasts which incorporate produce from the hotel’s private farm.

Rooms at the PR Myasnitsky Boutique Hotel have a more playful, contemporary look, combining bare brick with sleek pieces of modern furniture, all within the large public spaces of the nineteenth-century edifice. Each features a small fridge and capsule coffee machine. As a self-declared design hotel, rest assured that any stay at Akvarel Hotel will be an elegant one, with every detail considered from the moment you step across the threshold. The chic mid-century design flows effortlessly from the lobby bar and summer terrace to the rooms, each of which has been custom-styled with fanciful furnishings. A little further away, on the Third Ring Road in the Basmanny district, is the three-star Boutique Hotel Baumanskiy . The modern building features quirky in-room works of art and the offer of complimentary coffees at reception. The carpeted interiors give this stay a homely ambience, which marries well with breakfast – which is served in your room.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

contour pillow travel size

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

contour pillow travel size

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

contour pillow travel size

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.

  13. Gay Guide To Moscow, Travel Safely In Gay-Friendly Areas & Districts

Homosexuality is legal, although a vaguely-worded 2013 law prohibits the promotion of 'non-traditional' relationships. As such, gay travellers are advised against overt displays of their sexuality. That said, the vast majority of visits remain trouble-free, even for visitors who frequent the city's less-than-secret gay bar and club scene.

  14. How to get around Moscow using the underground metro

The sweet spot for Moscow Metro travel — especially if you're there to see the stations and not just carried on a sea of people through them — is between 11 a.m. and 3. p.m. An emptier Metro is not just more pleasant, but gives you a better view of the stations, not to mention better photos. During rush hour, push or be pushed.
