Certified Nurse Aide Registry

This program maintains the New Mexico Nurse Aide Registry ( NAR ). Provides support for certified nurse aides and assistance with trainings, reciprocities and Prometric. Provides guidance to medical facilities regarding CNA training programs. Provides approval and oversight of CNA training programs in New Mexico.

This program certifies nurse aide training programs in New Mexico and maintains the certified Nurse Aide Registry ( NAR ).

Paying Test Fees

The State of New Mexico will pay test fees for candidates who have been offered employment or are currently employed by a Medicaid certified nursing facility. In order for the state to pay your test fees, an authorized facility representative must complete Part C of your application.

If you are not eligible for state payment, you must pay your own test fees in the following manner:

  • Money orders or cashier’s checks made payable to Prometric are accepted. Personal checks/cash are not accepted.
  • To pay by credit card, add your information to the application.
  • Fees must be included with the application. Applications received without proper payment will be returned.
  • Your name and Social Security number must be written on the money orders/cashier’s checks.

Test Fee Rates

The Renewal Applications can be located online at the New Mexico Nurse Aide Exam website. New Mexico employment verification form is required for recertification to renew certification. Renewals are processed by Prometric and upon approval, renewed for two years from the date of last employment.

A New Mexico employment verification form is required for recertification.

Prometric will send you a verification/recertification form every two years (45 days prior to certification expiration date). It is very important that candidates give Prometric their current mailing address and advise Prometric if there has been a name change.

NOTE: There is a $26.25 renewal fee. Be sure to include a money order for this amount with your recertification form. Cash and personal checks are not acceptable, only money orders.

Reinstatement

Reinstatements of lapsed New Mexico certifications are processed as follows:

  • Certification lapsed less than 24 months, reinstate via retesting. Testing application must be submitted to Prometric using Option 7.
  • Certification lapsed more than 24 months, reinstate via retraining then retesting using Option 9.

Approval Letter

Certifications lapsed more than 24 months but employed in nursing-related field, may be eligible for an Approval Letter waiving requirement to retrain.

Reciprocity

The following documents are required for reciprocity (transfer) of a CNA to work in NM .

  • CNA Reciprocity Form

  • Driver License or Photo ID
  • Official Mailing Address

Verification

A transfer of a CNA from New Mexico to another state may require a verification form verifying the New Mexico certification. Verification forms are available from CNA registry business office of other states. A CNA is responsible for acquiring the verification form from the State nurse aide registry of a state other than New Mexico.

Once the verification form is acquired, do the following:

  • Fill out top portion of the Verification Form with your individual information.
  • Forward the original to the New Mexico CNA office.

NOTE: Copies may be sent using our email, mailing address and fax numbers on the right sidebar.

Once the verification form is received, the New Mexico CNA coordinator will verify your certification in the New Mexico registry, and will date, sign and stamp the official New Mexico Department of Health Nurse Aide Registry seal on the verification form and will mail it to the state you are transferring to.

The CNA must follow-up with the NAR of the reciprocating state within 3-4 weeks.

Training Programs

There are multiple CNA training programs located throughout the state. School based programs, provided by community colleges and universities. Mobile programs provide training to independent students. Facility based programs will ensure on-the-job training.
