Northwestern football ‘staying home’ with temporary enhancements to the Lanny and Sharon Martin facility on lakefront

temporary facility

  • University News

Northwestern’s football team will play a majority of its games this season at the Lanny and Sharon Martin athletics facility near Lake Michigan on the University’s Evanston campus, keeping the team close to home as it seeks to build on its bowl-winning 2023 season.

With views of the lake, North Campus and downtown Chicago, the temporary structure Northwestern will build at the Martin athletics facility will provide a stunning backdrop for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, bridging the gap between the old Ryan Field and the new state-of-the-art stadium, scheduled to open in 2026.

Most of the Wildcats’ home football games will be played at the enhanced Martin athletics facility. The University also is continuing discussions with other Chicago-area venues that could host some 2024 games. The full home schedule will be released soon.

Other teams, including the national title-winning lacrosse team and both the women’s and men’s soccer teams, also will play their home games at the Martin athletics facility. Northwestern’s field hockey team will continue to play at nearby Lakeside Field.

President Michael Schill said the University looked at several options for the next two seasons and decided building this temporary facility on campus provided the best option for Northwestern’s student-athletes, for the student experience, for alumni, for season ticket holders and for the campus and Evanston communities.

“I am thrilled that we could make this happen. It’s truly a win for our community,” Schill said. “In addition to creating a wonderful fan experience in the lead-up to the opening of Ryan Field, hosting games on campus will reduce the travel burdens for our student-athletes and fans and will make games much more accessible. We also are pleased to keep the economic benefits of football gamedays in Evanston.”

Although the exact configuration is still being designed, the structure will be a temporary enhancement to the existing Lanny and Sharon Martin athletics facility and part of Chap and Ethel Hutcheson Field. Capacity for the temporary facility will be considerably less than either the old Ryan Field or the new Ryan Field that is under construction. 2023 season ticket holders will get the first opportunity to purchase season tickets at the lakeside venue; there also will be seats reserved for Northwestern students. In the coming weeks, 2023 season ticket holders will receive communications from Northwestern Athletics with more information on the season ticket timeline, seat selection process, seating options and parking.

Non-season ticket holders interested in season tickets at the lakeside venue can join the season ticket wait-list .

“To be able to play these games on campus is a huge advantage for our football program and will be a great benefit to our reigning national champion and top-ranked lacrosse team and both the women’s and men’s soccer programs,” said Combe Family Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Dr. Derrick Gragg. “We look forward to welcoming fans and the entire Northwestern community to this beautiful area of campus to cheer on our Wildcat student-athletes.”

To make the enhancements to the Martin athletics facility, the University has partnered with InProduction, the company behind the structures used for the NASCAR viewing area in downtown Chicago, as well as temporary seating, staging, structures and more for college athletics at the University of Hawaii and Florida State.

Construction is expected to begin early this summer, and the facility will remain operational through the 2025 season.

“We talk all the time about providing the ultimate student-athlete experience, and keeping our team on campus while providing a true home field advantage accomplishes that mission,” said Dan and Susan Jones Family Head Football Coach David Braun. “During a period of exciting transition, playing in a venue that brings the Northwestern community together provides a perfect bridge to the new Ryan Field, and I’m so excited about the gameday experience for our program and the entire Wildcat community.”

The facility will provide a boost to the top-ranked lacrosse team, among others, by expanding the number of seats for home games.   This season, which will conclude before the temporary facility is built, six of the seven home lacrosse games have sold out.

“The Martin athletics facility is one of the most picturesque college sports venues in the country,” said Combe Family Head Lacrosse Coach Kelly Amonte Hiller. “We look forward to the Northwestern football team and its fans experiencing the tremendous environment that lacrosse, soccer and field hockey have enjoyed on the shores of Lake Michigan.”

Keeping the majority of home football games on the Evanston campus also will benefit nearby businesses, providing a boost to downtown and Central Street businesses on gamedays.

“We are excited about Northwestern’s decision to host a majority of its home football games at a temporary facility on campus,” said Valerie Romano, president of the Evanston Chamber of Commerce. “The Evanston Chamber of Commerce is fully supportive of this idea, and we look forward to the increased business activity it will bring to downtown Evanston.”

More information will be released about logistics and ticket opportunities in the near future.

Veteran QB Mike Wright commits to play at Northwestern

northwestern football visit

Veteran college quarterback Mike Wright , who logged starts at Mississippi State and Vanderbilt , has committed to play next year at Northwestern , he told ESPN.

Wright, who enters his final year of eligibility, gives Northwestern an experienced quarterback who brings 14 career starts, 11 at Vanderbilt and three at MSU. He has appeared in 38 games in his career.

Wright has thrown 24 touchdown passes, has rushed for 10 more and has 2,520 career passing yards. He also has accounted for 1,229 rushing yards in his career.

He'll give second-year Northwestern head coach David Braun an intriguing option. Braun brought in a new offensive coordinator, Zach Lujan, who was the FCS Coordinator of the Year in 2023 at South Dakota State.

"For me, it was about Coach Braun and Coach Lujan," Wright told ESPN. "Those two guys were the main factors."

Wright will compete for Northwestern's starting job with redshirt sophomore Jack Lausch and sixth-year veteran Ryan Hilinski .

Last year's primary starter, transfer Ben Bryant , exhausted his eligibility, and backup Brendan Sullivan announced Wednesday that he has committed to Iowa.

Wright noted that his hosts on his visit were three of Northwestern's marquee receivers -- Calvin Johnson II , Bryce Kirtz and A.J. Henning -- and he said they made him excited to get them the ball.

He added that Lujan's system adapts to the talent, which also excites him.

"He's the type of offensive coordinator that adjusts around his players," Wright said. "Certain offensive coordinators have their system and it is what it is. He adjusts his offense to the players' skill set and strengths."

Northwestern went 8-5 last year and closed the season with four straight wins, including beating Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Northwestern quarterback transfer Brendan Sullivan schedules visit with Iowa football

northwestern football visit

IOWA CITY — Northwestern quarterback transfer Brendan Sullivan is scheduled to visit Iowa this week, his father Mike confirmed to the Register.

Sullivan and his father are scheduled to arrive in Iowa on Tuesday.

Sullivan has appeared in 13 games over the last two seasons for Northwestern. During that span, Sullivan went 134-of-195 passing for 1,303 yards with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. Sullivan also rushed for three touchdowns.

Last season, Sullivan had a stint filling in for injured quarterback Ben Bryant. Sullivan played against Iowa last season in the game at Wrigley Field, passing for 81 yards against the Hawkeyes’ elite defense.

The best performance of Sullivan’s 2023 season came against Maryland. In that game, Sullivan threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns. He finished last season with a 63.6 completion percentage and 714 yards passing.

Iowa’s quarterbacks room is in dire need of reinforcement.

The Hawkeyes’ quarterback play was a disaster last season and it isn't set up to be in a much better position heading into the 2024 campaign. Joe Labas, Deacon Hill and walk-on Tommy Poholsky all entered the transfer portal.

As it stands now, Iowa is set to have just three quarterbacks on the roster in 2024. Cade McNamara has suffered back-to-back season-ending injuries and was limited this spring while getting fully healthy from his latest injury. Redshirt freshman Marco Lainez, who has attempted just seven passes in college, is still young and developing. James Resar is a signee in 2024 class but has not joined the team yet.

Iowa’s repeated offensive failures have led to a substantial amount of change on that side of the ball leading up to the 2024 season. Iowa hired ex-Western Michigan coach Tim Lester as offensive coordinator, taking over for Brian Ferentz. The program also moved on from wide receivers coach Kelton Copeland, internally promoting Jon Budmayr for that position.

Still, Iowa’s quarterbacks room looks shaky. The Hawkeyes are in need of some much-needed depth and talent.

Tailgate Service at Northwestern

Attending a game at Ryan Field is so much more than just a gameday experience, it’s a chance to spend an entire weekend in Chicago, Illinois! Who doesn’t love a weekend in the Windy City?  Because Northwestern is just north of such a major city, it gives you endless options on gameday – from traditional tailgating at Northwestern in nearby parking lots, to bar hopping in the city and taking the metra in near kick-off. There’s an option for every type of fan. For a night game, you can even do a little bit of everything!

If your team is traveling out to face off against the Northwestern Wildcats, be sure to read along for everything you’ll need to know to not only have a great game day experience but a great weekend in Chicago!

Pro-Tip – a lot of people sleep on how much fun tailgating at Northwestern really is. It’s a hidden gem. You’re going to have a great time!

Pre-Gameday Checklist!

#1 Purchase Game Tickets – tickets can be purchased online at NUSports.com or by calling 888-GO-PURPLE (how cute). See the schedule below for the dates:

#2: Review Game Day Policies (so you pack accordingly)– the Northwestern Football Fan Guide is a great place to start!

#3: Gameday Gameplan – it’s good to have a general idea of what you want your game day experience to be ahead of time. For instance, if you’re planning to drive and park at Northwestern so you can tailgate, you should look into renting a car for the weekend and booking an Airbnb so you have access to a kitchen. Or if you are joining a friend’s tailgate, or doing some bar hopping, you really don’t need a car for the weekend. Chicago’s public transport system is top-notch. From the airport, you can take the train into the city to your hotel, and then use ride-share, the Metra, and walk for the rest of your visit.

Where to Stay on your visit to Chicago!

No question: Downtown Chicago!

One of the best elements of traveling in for a Wildcats football game is it’s in the incredible destination city of CHICAGO!

Now I’m from Chicago, so I may be a bit biased, but it’s truly an incredible city, and if you can take a day or two off from work, I’d do so and make your trip to an NU football game an extended weekend getaway in the city.

From the incredible sports scene to the endless top-notch restaurants and bars, to a diverse music scene, and even the beach, Chicago has it all and is a city everyone will enjoy. Check out the below blog posts for inspiration to plan out your weekend:

What you cannot I mean CANNOT miss: you must get deep dish pizza from Gino’s East and a cake shake from Portillos (probably not at the same time or you may not stand up for two days).

If you’re not a big fan of the cold, I’d suggest making your way out to a game EARLY in the season, September and October are great weather months that have that nip of fall in the air, but you might not love heading to a sub-40 degree game in November.

If you decide to stay in the city, it’s super simple to either hop an Uber/Lyft and head up Lakeshore drive to Evanston, or you can take the Metra as well, you may just need to make a few train switches depending on where you’re coming from. See the next section for more transportation options.

Getting to Ryan Field on Gameday

You’ve got quite a few options when it comes to getting to Ryan Field:

#1 Drive & Park

Ryan Stadium Address: 1501 Central Street, Evanston, IL 60208

See the below two maps for more detailed information on permit parking immediately around the stadium, and free parking options in the surrounding neighborhood. Do note, there are also some cash lots immediately around the stadium – for instance, the golf course will open a limited number of cash spots depending on extra space. There are also quite a few folks who will sell parking spaces on their lawns in the neighborhoods.

**UPDATE FOR 2023**

The Canal Shores Golf Course will NOT be available to park and tailgate at for the Fall 2023 football season. The golf course is undergoing construction. The only opportunity to tailgate at Canal Shores would be to book a turn-key tailgate experience via Tailgater Concierge. More details can be found HERE .

Tailgating at Northwestern Parking Options

The closest line: Union Pacific North line to Central St. stop. You can see the full train schedule, train line, and fare information at Metra Rail . If you’re leaning towards bar hopping in the city as your pre-game experience, I’d recommend this route or ride-share depending on where you are coming from. But taking the Metra rail right up to practically the entrance of the stadium is pretty cool, and you’ll be surrounded by other football fans.

Ride the Purple CTA line to the Central Street train station, 2 blocks east of Ryan Field. Parking is available at both the Howard and Linden Stations. Visit the CTA Sports Destination website for more information.

#4 Ride Share

Utilizing ride-share companies such as Lyft or Uber is always a great option on game days, especially when you’ll be drinking. We’d suggest having your driver drop you somewhere a few blocks from Ryan Field to avoid any congestion in the area! It’s a beautiful area, so a small walk will be very enjoyable. The same goes for when you’re leaving the stadium – things can get very congested, so plan to walk a few blocks before calling an Uber/Lyft. You’ll get one much quicker this way.

For more information on getting to Ryan Field, check out Northwestern Athletics’ Football Transportation Guide .

Pre-Game Options

When it comes to your pre-game options at Northwestern Football games, it pays off to plan. Whether you just want to grab a bite and head to the game, hit up a bar for a few drinks, or full-on tailgate, there are limitations to all options, so it’s good to have a game plan going into the experience.

Tailgating at Northwestern

When it comes to tailgating, most of the lots around Ryan Field are where you’ll find all the action. Unfortunately, all of these lots (i.e. the West Lot, Canal Shores) are permit parking only for Northwestern season ticket holders.  Sometimes, the Canal Shores Golf Course will have cash parking on game days, but they sell those on a first-come, first-served basis and have a varying number each game day.

If you want to tailgate in the heart of the action, either find someone with a pass to a nearby lot, or you could utilize Tailgater Concierge (more details below) on the Canal Shores Golf Course right at the clubhouse!

One thing to note – the general parking lots require you to take a shuttle to the stadium! Be sure to account for that in your timing for the day. You don’t want to miss the kick-off.

If you’re planning on hosting your own tailgate, be sure to check out our other popular blogs:

Wildcat Alley

If you’d like to purchase tickets to Northwestern’s Wildcat Alley – you can do so here ! Wildcat Alley typically opens 3 hours before kick-off and has live entertainment, a Northwestern Marching Band performance, and quite a few food trucks available. It’s a very family-friendly event!

Food and Beverage Options Around the Stadium

Overall, options are fairly limited for food and beverage in close walking distance of the stadium.

If it’s a night game, and you’re just looking to grab a bite close to the stadium and head over, we’ve heard great things from locals about Ten Mile House .

To pre-game at a fun bar, the best option within walking distance is The Bluestone . However, if you’re willing to hop in an Uber, a popular bar closer to downtown Evanston is Bat 17 . Canal Shores Golf Course also has a cash bar in its golf shop!

When it comes to F&B, I’d recommend doing this before heading to the stadium if possible, unless you’re joining or hosting your own tailgate that is!

Northwestern Tailgate Gear

Given the long off-season we’ve had from football – it seems as though every fan is in need of some refreshes to their tailgate gear. Here are some great finds out team found:

B00TCKWJPS

We always like to recommend the Logo Brand Chairs when getting team-branded gear. As of March 2022, this one is $35 on Amazon – typically these go on sale from time to time, so I’d wait until that happens before purchasing!

B08N87D69Q

If you want to start repping your team sooner, here are some great coffee mugs you can add to your Northwestern gear collection. Linked here .

For anything clothing-related – we always encourage our tailgaters to check out Fanatics . They have a great assortment of attire for all fans, and typically are doing a ton of promotions and deals.

Northwestern announces where football team will play home games next season

Northwestern plans to install a temporary structure at the soccer and lacrosse field that will remain in place through the 2025 season, published april 10, 2024 • updated on april 10, 2024 at 5:57 pm.

Northwestern will play the majority of its home football games next season at its lakefront soccer and lacrosse facility while a new Ryan Field is constructed on the site of the old stadium, the school announced Wednesday.

Northwestern plans to install a temporary structure at the soccer and lacrosse field that will remain in place through the 2025 season. The school said the capacity is still to be determined, though it will be considerably lower than at the old Ryan Field and the new stadium.

The football team has nonconference home games next season against Miami (Ohio) on Aug. 31, Duke on Sept. 7 and Eastern Illinois on Sept. 14. In Big Ten play, the Wildcats are scheduled to host Indiana (Oct. 5), Wisconsin (Oct. 19), Ohio State (Nov. 16) and Illinois (Nov. 30).

Northwestern is in discussions with other Chicago-area stadiums to host games. The Wildcats have played at Wrigley Field three times since 2010, including a loss to Iowa last year on a last-second field goal.

“I am thrilled that we could make this happen," Northwestern president Michael Schill said. "It’s truly a win for our community. In addition to creating a wonderful fan experience in the lead-up to the opening of Ryan Field, hosting games on campus will reduce the travel burdens for our student-athletes and fans and will make games much more accessible. We also are pleased to keep the economic benefits of football gamedays in Evanston.”

The new Ryan Field is part of a $480 million donation from the family of Patrick and Shirley Ryan that was the largest in school history. Some of that money is also funding academic ventures.

The school has said the stadium would seat 35,000, down more than 12,000 from the current Ryan Field, and feature a canopy designed to keep noise and light focused on the field. It would include cutting-edge technology and scoreboards, as well as concessions with food from local restaurants, and would achieve Gold LEED certification.

Break out the sailgating.

Northwestern football will play many of its home games for the 2024 and 2025 seasons at the Lanny and Sharon Martin athletics facility, the university announced in a press release Wednesday evening. The venue, home to Northwestern’s lacrosse and soccer teams, will be modified to accommodate a temporary structure while construction on the new Ryan Field continues.

“I am thrilled that we could make this happen. It’s truly a win for our community,” Northwestern President Michael Schill said in a statement. “In addition to creating a wonderful fan experience in the lead-up to the opening of Ryan Field, hosting games on campus will reduce the travel burdens for our student-athletes and fans and will make games much more accessible. We also are pleased to keep the economic benefits of football gamedays in Evanston.”

Prior to the announcement, there was speculation that Northwestern home games would be played at Wrigley Field, Lambeau Field, Wrigley Field or SeatGeek Stadium. It remains to be seen how many of NU’s games will be played right on Lake Michigan, with seven home matches on the docket for the upcoming 2024 season.

The exact design of the structure is still incomplete, but the enhanced Martin Stadium will still hold far fewer spectators than Ryan Field. To enact the project, the university has partnered with InProduction, a company that has worked on temporary seating projects for NASCAR, Formula One, the NFL Draft and the University of Tennessee.

This plan was popular amongst Northwestern fans because of its proximity to campus, allowing Northwestern to maintain a home-field advantage. Construction on the project will begin early this summer.

“We talk all the time about providing the ultimate student-athlete experience, and keeping our team on campus while providing a true home field advantage accomplishes that mission,” said Northwestern head coach David Braun in a statement. “During a period of exciting transition, playing in a venue that brings the Northwestern community together provides a perfect bridge to the new Ryan Field, and I’m so excited about the gameday experience for our program and the entire Wildcat community.”

The soccer and lacrosse squads will not be displaced and will continue to play their home games at the Martin athletics facility. Northwestern field hockey, which plays at the adjacent Lakeside Field, will also be uninterrupted.

“To be able to play these games on campus is a huge advantage for our football program and will be a great benefit to our reigning national champion and top-ranked lacrosse team and both the women’s and men’s soccer programs,” Northwestern Athletic Director Dr. Derrick Gragg. “We look forward to welcoming fans and the entire Northwestern community to this beautiful area of campus to cheer on our Wildcat student-athletes.”

The president was in the city for about four hours as he attended the fundraiser at the Palmer House Hilton, his second in the past month.

A line of police blocked protesters from accessing the entrance to the hotel.

The pro-Palestinian demonstrators are critical of the president's support of Israel, in particular, at this moment, with an Israeli invasion of Rafah possibly imminent.

They stopped after marching through downtown, blocking traffic and spreading their message with loudspeakers. They first gathered for a rally near Michigan Avenue and Ida B. Wells Drive.

"Him and all of those ultra-rich millionaires and billionaires who are supporting him at this fundraiser who are also complicit in the genocide absolutely can hear us," said Hatem Abudayyeh with Chicago Coalition for Justice in Palestine.

Earlier in Wisconsin Biden spoke to CNN and acknowledged the dozens of college encampments that have formed.

"There's a legitimate right to free speech and protest. There's a legitimate to right to do that, and they have a right to do that. There's not a legitimate right to use hate speech," Biden said.

Biden said for the first time he would halt some shipments of American weapons to Israel if there's a major invasion of the city of Rafah.

"I think it's clearly too little, too late, but we also take credit for the fact that there has been a little bit of a shift in policy," Abudayyeh said.

President Biden arrived in Chicago a little after 3:30 p.m., stepping off Air Force One at O'Hare.

From there, he took a helicopter to an area near Soldier Field, and then took a motorcade from there to the Loop, where he arrived for that fundraiser around 4:30 p.m.

The demonstrators are vowing to continue protesting the president's visits. That includes, of course, the Democratic National Convention this summer, where they're expecting tens of thousands to take to the streets.

Biden announces new Microsoft AI facility at site of failed Trump factory in Wisconsin

Earlier in the day Wednesday, Biden announced a $3.3 billion investment in Wisconsin.

Biden said the money will help create jobs as Microsoft builds a new artificial intelligence facility.

In 2018, then-President Donald Trump broke ground at the same site in Racine on what was supposed to be an electronics factory for Taiwan's Foxconn.

Trump had promised 13,000 jobs, calling the project the "Eighth Wonder of the World," as he used a golden shovel to break ground.

Construction equipment is now leveling land to build the data center.

"They dug a hole with those golden shovels, and then they fell into it," Biden said Wednesday.

FoxConn never panned out, which was something President Biden drove home, as he trolled Trump during his stop in Wisconsin.

"FoxConn turned about to be just that, a con -- go figure," Biden said.

Biden joined Microsoft President Brad Smith to announce the data center that will be one of Microsoft's largest in the world. Unlike FoxConn, Smith said his company under-promises and over-delivers.

"We are going to be building one of the world's most advanced AI centers that you will see anywhere," Smith said.

Microsoft said just building the center will create over 2,000 union jobs. There will also be thousands of jobs once the project is complete. Some local union residents said Wednesday's announcement should be enough to get undecided voters to vote for Biden.

"Absolutely, there are going to be a lot of workers at Microsoft. Everybody is successful over there," Racine resident Meekma said.

Besides union voters, President Biden is making a big push to get more Black voters.

After the Microsoft event, he stopped at a small Racine community center, where he received a standing ovation.

Wisconsin is such an important state for the Biden/Harris ticket. Wednesday's visit by the president is one of many there.

Vice President Kamala Harris will be making yet another stop in Milwaukee on May 16 to tout the administration's economic agenda.

"Whatever your politics may be, you got to look at the people who are the helping hand," Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin resident Lyle Tryba said.

Northwestern transfer QB Brendan Sullivan commits to Iowa football

northwestern football visit

IOWA CITY — A heavily scrutinized position group for Iowa football has added a much-needed cushion.

Northwestern transfer quarterback Brendan Sullivan has committed to the Hawkeyes, he announced Wednesday on Instagram. Sullivan was recently on a visit to Iowa City.

A 3-star prep prospect out of Davison High School in Michigan, Sullivan spent three seasons in the Northwestern program, redshirting the first. Over the last two seasons, Sullivan has appeared in 13 games for the Wildcats. During that span, Sullivan went 134-of-195 for 1,303 yards with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. Sullivan also rushed for three touchdowns. With height and weight measurements in the neighborhood of 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, Sullivan possesses a sturdy frame.

He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

The addition of Sullivan alleviates some concerns surrounding Iowa’s quarterback room.

The Hawkeyes’ quarterback play was a disaster last season and it wasn’t set up to be in a much better position heading into the 2024 campaign. Joe Labas, Deacon Hill and Tommy Poholsky each entered the transfer portal, with the former two having been on scholarship.

Cade McNamara has suffered back-to-back season-ending injuries and was limited this spring while getting fully healthy from the latter. Redshirt freshman Marco Lainez, who has attempted just seven passes in college, is still young and developing. James Resar is a signee in the 2024 class, but has not joined the team yet.

With such a thin quarterback room, Iowa was vulnerable following spring practice and badly needed to bolster that position group.

The Hawkeyes might not be able to afford a repeat of last season’s debacle. McNamara, who was banged up leading into the season, suffered a torn ACL against Michigan State in September, forcing him to miss the rest of the year. That thrust Hill into the spotlight, whose inexperience showed mightily, one of the root causes in Iowa’s offensive nosedive.

The program's repeated offensive failures have led to a substantial amount of change on that side of the ball leading up to the 2024 season. Iowa hired ex-Western Michigan coach Tim Lester as offensive coordinator, taking over for Brian Ferentz. It also moved on from wide receivers coach Kelton Copeland, internally promoting Jon Budmayr for that position.

And still, Iowa’s quarterback room has remained a major unknown.

The addition of Sullivan does not guarantee success. But it does offer some much-needed stability at the quarterback position.

Last season, Sullivan had a stint filling in as the starter for injured Northwestern quarterback Ben Bryant. That experience could benefit Iowa if he is put in that scenario yet again. The best performance of Sullivan’s 2023 season came against Maryland, a 33-27 Wildcats win. In that game, Sullivan threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns. He finished last season with a 63.6 completion percentage and 714 yards passing.

Sullivan is familiar with the Hawkeyes, having taken snaps against their elite defense in 2022 and 2023. Two seasons ago, he went 23-of-30 for 159 yards with two touchdowns and one interception at Kinnick Stadium. Last season, he threw for 81 yards during a matchup against the Hawkeyes at Wrigley Field. Iowa won both games.

Sullivan is not an overly flashy transfer portal addition, but Iowa doesn't necessarily need that. The Hawkeyes just need something it lacked last season: a quarterback who can execute the game plan and protect the ball. On paper, Sullivan provides that.

Iowa is now in a much more favorable spot than it was a week ago. It would be ideal if McNamara can get — and stay — fully healthy for the 2024 season. But if not, Iowa now has Sullivan as another viable option. Ideally, Lainez and Resar can develop behind him.

There is still a lot that needs to be figured out as far as the progress of Iowa’s offense goes. A unit that has been an extreme disappointment for the last several seasons needs to be rebuilt. There are still questions about quarterback, wide receiver and offensive line production.

But now, at least Lester has a better-situated quarterback room, which could also help the other pieces fall into place.

Big ten football updated class of 2025 recruiting rankings after spring practice, share this article.

Spring practice is over for programs across the country and with it, so is the rush to uncover minor insights about each team. Most programs have countless questions entering the period. Those questions are almost never solved entirely and instead are pushed into the summer and into fall camp.

Next comes the part of the calendar that is dominated by recruiting. Nearly every weekend is a significant official visit weekend from the end of May through July. Wisconsin makes its mark during June, when the midwest weather is terrific and the city of Madison is at its best.

Luke Fickell and his staff have June loaded up with official visits for players in the class of 2025, with more sure to be added in the coming weeks. The recruiting cycle is critical for the program as Fickell looks to establish it in the new Big Ten landscape.

Looking ahead to the 2024 season, we’ve already  ranked all 18 programs in the Big Ten ,  ranked the 18 starting quarterbacks ,  ranked all 18 head coaches ,  predicted each Big Ten team’s 2024 record ,  looked at the early College Football Playoff tiers ,  made bold predictions for the season  and checked in on the  Las Vegas win totals for each team in the conference .
