You can reach Paamiut by air on certain days of the week flying directly from either Nuuk or Narsarsuaq. Alternatively, you can catch the Sarfaq Ittuk passenger ferry that calls into Paamiut twice per week – once on its northbound journey, and once as it heads south.

The best times to visit Paamiut are April – October (sailing, hiking), and January – March (skiing, snowshoeing, northern lights).

Paamiut is a small settlement and everybody mostly walks everywhere.

The Port of Paamiut

Paamiut means “at the mouth of,” referring to the location of this small town located at the mouth of the 30-mile long Kuannersooq fjord, or in Danish – Kvanefjord. Cruising in a fjord means that land is usually visible throughout the journey. And being in a fjord also means that the water isn’t quite as rough as it can be on the open sea. This port had a pier that could handle Fram, so I was looking forward to coming alongside in Paamiut and not having to wait in line for my boat number to be called for tendering. We also heard that there was a possibility of kayaking in this port, but the wind was beginning to pick up and I, for one, wasn’t keen on kayaking today.

As we approached the pier, the ship suddenly turned and then left the pier. The wind was predicted to increase and the captain decided that it was unsafe to dock as the wind would make it difficult to leave the pier if we had docked. So, off we went to find a spot to anchor so that we could safely tender. Talk of kayaking continued, but I felt little motivated to do this considering the increasing wind. Unlike other excursions, where passengers are brought to a kayak launching point from the ship, we did just the opposite. The kayaks are on board and travel with us. The Expedition Team does an advance research trip to figure out a good place for kayaking and for tendering into. Once they find a suitable place, they tow the kayaks to the appropriate place and the kayakers tender into that point, which is likely to be different than where the tenders drop off the other passengers in port.

Our time in port was already short and tendering would further reduce the time onshore. The big event in Paamiut was a scheduled performance by a local choir. They graciously agreed to delay the start so that all passengers could reach the church in time. When I arrived, the church was full of red coats waiting to enjoy the concert. I didn’t expect that most people would head directly to the church to attempt to get a front row seat. I sat in the last row, but could still hear very well. Take a listen to their singing:

The church itself is a structure of significance in Paamiut. Built in 1909 in Danish style, the Church of Peace (Fredens Kirke) is of the stave style, entirely built of wood with posts and lintel construction.

Many locals were out and about in Paamiut and the town itself seemed more lively than Maniitsoq. Several families with babies in strollers ambled the streets. We had originally been scheduled to arrive in port at 2:00 p.m. with the concert occurring at 3:30 p.m. and the last onboard time at 5:30. There was very little time in port and I was disappointed that I missed the local museum, which closes at 3p.m. Guess that is something to save for next time.

Like in Maniitsoq, the buildings in town were quite colorful, perhaps a way to make the long winters seem less dreary. Several groups of children played in the street. One group of three saw me with my camera and approached me wanting me to take their photo. I speak nary a word of Greenlandic, but the older girl in the group knew some rudimentary English, so I obliged and took a few shots of these friendly children.

It’s nice to reflect on the day and the voyage so far. So far, so good. I haven’t broken any bones yet, something that concerned me. Medical facilities in these parts are few and far between and very basic if they exist. I took the precaution and purchased medical evacuation insurance from MedJet Assist prior to the trip. Fortunately, my health insurance would cover any medical issues, so I covered all of my bases. I have heard stories of med evac costs bankrupting families who couldn’t afford the medical transport costs. Throughout the trip, I remained vigilant and cautious about any situation that might cause me to trip, fall, slip or twist. This was another day that I escaped without an injury.

Charming nanortalik, greenland summer walking tour – wildflowers, icebergs & music.

Nanortalik is a charming village to see and is on the route for cruises crossing the Atlantic.  As an Acupuncturist-at-Sea on a cruise ship I enjoyed my Nanortalik Greenland walking tour very much and love sharing my experience.   Because it is so small, you can easily enjoy the village in a half-day adventure.  So, read on to learn about how to make the most of your time in this unique port-of-call.  I was there the end of July, so enjoyed sunny skies with large swaths of yellow wildflowers. 

Nanortalik means “Place of Polar Bears,” even though they are rarely seen here.  The small village of about 1200 inhabitants is on an island on the shores of the Labrador Sea.  While the winters are understandably cold the summer is a great time to visit with temperatures that reaches the highs into the 40’s – 50’s F.   Also, it lies at the mouth of the Tasermiut Fjord in a very picturesque setting.   The locals are very friendly and love to sing, so you can expect street performers and even a choir in the church.

Nanortalik Greenland Walking Tour What to See & Do in a Half-Day

I absolutely loved my 3-hour walking tour here and pretty much experienced it all spontaneously without preparation.  I just walked down the main street toward the old town and became immediately entertained with murals, the landscapes and scenery, along with the friendly locals.  Firstly, I just walked around and took in the views of the granite knolls carpeted with yellow wildflowers, enveloped by mountains and sea.  The morning sun burned off the fog and vibrant, blue sky appeared. 

I walked by the main wooden church with choir performances every hour.  Then, I went to the Old Town, preserved by about 10 buildings with vintage artifacts and photos.  It cost about $10 and was well worth it.  The setting helps you to imagine what it was like to live in this remote area, especially more than 100 years ago. 

The buildings in the Old Town housed various artifacts needed for survival in this part of the world.  For example, I went inside an old blubber house, a fish packing plant and peat house.  There is a Greenland Flagpole that I climbed its ladder to the top for a 360-degree panoramic view of the sea, mountains and even lingering icebergs.  I found a bench seaside with a large iceberg less than 20 feet from me.  It was interesting to sit in the presence of this unique testament to the northern chill. 

Lastly, I stopped in the church to listen to the choir and then walked on down the street to listen to the street performers. 

The locals were very friendly and festive with their music and arts for sale.   Two young girls approached me with puppies.   Also, there were signs for one hour water tours to see the icebergs.  And there was a busy café called Café 44.  Overall, it’s a charming experience with a sense of being off the beaten path.

Good morning, I would like to know if it is possible to see icebergs in Nanortalik without taking a boat trip, just by walking along the water’s edge

Yes, the icebergs float close to shore, but they do move so no guarantee for the day you are there. There were icebergs close to shore when I was there.

When I was there, I saw a couple close to the waters edge in Nanortalik. However, it always changes. The icebergs float nearby but to see a lot of them, it is best to do boat tour. If you are on a cruise, you will probably see many icebergs on the cruise.

Anacostia Riverkeeper says proposed budget shift could leave free boat tours high and dry

From Friday Night Fishing to free boat tours, the Anacostia Riverkeeper program is designed to acquaint D.C. residents with the river and continue cleanup efforts.

But Anacostia Riverkeeper Trey Sherard told WTOP he’s concerned about a potential move of $1.8 million from river cleanup funding, which is part of the “Budget Support Act” that could allow for legal authority to make specific revenue changes.

Under the plan, balances in dozens of dedicated tax and special purpose funds from the Riverkeeper could be shifted to the District’s General Fund.

D.C. is facing a $700 million shortfall this year — part of the $4 billion projected budget gap over the next five years.

Sherard told WTOP that $1.8 million will come from the Anacostia River Clean Up Fund.

“That fund is responsible for covering all of the free boat tours that we and other groups offer,” Sherard explained. “That fund is also responsible for funding all of our trash trap maintenance.”

Sherard said thousands of pounds of trash are taken out of those trash traps every year — and that doesn’t include other cleanups throughout the year.

While the mayor’s budget plan includes funding for a variety of environmental goals, like remediation of hazardous materials in the Anacostia River, Sherard pointed out the Anacostia River Clean Up Fund is paid for through the District of Columbia’s bag fee. That’s the nickel added to your bill if you opt to get a paper or plastic bag at the checkout counter.

Sherard said the law that created that fee stipulated that the money from the bag fee would be restricted to paying for cleaning and protecting the Anacostia River, adding that it should not be shifted to the general fund.

Other groups, including City Wildlife and the Rock Creek Conservancy, are also lobbying to keep the money from being shifted to D.C.’s general fund.

D.C. Council’s Committee on Transportation and the Environment is holding its budget oversight hearing Monday at 9:30 a.m. to discuss the plan.

AMSTERDAM -- Decked in the national orange color, dancing to music, and eating orange-glazed pastries, many in the Netherlands Saturday are marking King's Day, celebrating the birthday of their monarch who is enjoying a very slight rise in popularity as per a national poll.

As King Willem-Alexander celebrated his 57th birthday with his family in the northeastern city of Emmen, people across the country engaged in the traditional “free markets” held on that day, selling second-hand toys, books and other items. Others toured through the historic canals of the capital, Amsterdam as orange smoke from flares held aloft one boat drifted over vessels of all shapes and sizes jostling for space on a busy canal.

“Celebrating your birthday with your own family is the most beautiful thing you can experience. I'm very happy everybody is back,” Willem-Alexander told Dutch broadcaster NOS during a walkabout in Emmen, 190 kilometers (120 miles) northeast of the Dutch capital.

An annual poll published by the NOS for King’s Day showed Willem-Alexander’s popularity edging up very slightly since last year to 6.6 out of 10. His Argentine-born wife, Queen Maxima, scored 7.1 out of 10 in the poll of 1,015 people, conducted earlier this month.

The royals’ popularity took a hit during the COVID-19 pandemic after Willem-Alexander and his family went on vacation in Greece during a partial lockdown. The royals cut short their break amid national uproar and Willem-Alexander took the unusual step of issuing a video message to express his regret and contrition for the trip.

The king's three daughters, Amalia, Alexia and Ariane have all spent time out of the country recently — Ariane has been studying in Italy while Alexia has taken a gap year to travel. The eldest and heir to the Dutch throne, Amalia, also returned ahead of the king's birthday after being forced to leave her student accommodation in Amsterdam and move to Madrid following threats from the criminal underworld.

Amalia, 20, who is studying politics, psychology, law and economics at Amsterdam University, told NOS she was “extremely grateful to everybody who made it possible” for her to live in Spain, where she said she was able to enjoy more freedom than in the Netherlands.

But, she added: “I'm glad to be back.”
