  • Do Pakistani Citizens Need a UK Visa?

Whether or not an individual will need a visa to travel to the UK depends on a) their nationality and b) their intended length of stay in the country.

EU/EFTA nationals, citizens from a few Commonwealth countries, and citizens from certain visa-exempt countries for the UK (such as the US, Japan, Singapore or Israel) will not need a visa to enter the UK if they are going to stay in the country for less than six months.

They will still be required to carry the required documents for a UK visa with them, and show those documents to the UK immigration officers at the port of entry. Moreover, they can stay in the UK without a visa for only three months if they are entering the country from Ireland.

However, if they intend to stay in the UK for six months or more, they will have to apply for a visa regardless of their nationality. Citizens from all other countries will need a visa to travel to the UK, irrespective of their proposed length of stay in the country.

Pakistan is a visa-required nation for the UK. So, Pakistani citizens will have to obtain a valid visa to enter the UK, whether they are planning to stay in the country for less than six months or longer.

Pakistani citizens will have multiple UK visa options to choose from, depending on their reasons to travel to the UK and intended length of stay. The main categories of UK visas are:

  • Health and Care Worker visa and Skilled Worker visa , for skilled overseas workers with a UK job offer
  • Senior or Specialist Worker visa, Overseas Domestic Worker visa, Graduate Trainee visa, Secondment Worker visa, Service Supplier visa, UK Expansion Worker visa, or Representative of an Overseas Business visa for overseas employees working in the UK for their employers abroad
  • British National (Overseas) visa, Graduate visa, Youth Mobility Scheme visa, India Young Professionals Scheme visa, Global Talent visa , UK Ancestry visa, or High Potential Individual (HPI) visa for eligible foreign nationals without a job offer in the UK
  • Temporary work visas such as Seasonal Worker visa, Government Authorised Exchange visa, Creative Worker visa, Religious Worker visa, Charity Worker visa , International Agreement visa etc.
  • Others such as International Sportsperson visa, Minister of Religion visa (T2), Scale-up Worker visa, Frontier Worker permit etc.
  • Business visas such as a Business Visitor visa or an Innovator Founder visa
  • Study visas , such as a Student visa, a Child Student visa, or a Short-term study visa
  • Standard Visit visa for tourism, business, study and other permitted activities, for a maximum period of up to six months (long-term Standard Visitor visas are available for foreign nationals who come to the UK regularly, but they can stay for a maximum of six months per visit)
  • Family visa to live in the UK for more than six months with a UK resident family member
  • Transit visa for passing through the UK to another country

Foreign nationals fearing persecution in their home countries may also seek asylum in the UK. However, there is no UK asylum seeker visa. After arriving in the UK without any legal approval in the form of a valid visa, asylum seekers will have to apply for refugee status or humanitarian protection in the country.

The Nationalities and Borders Act 2022 introduced a provision for temporary refugee permission to stay, which would be valid for a minimum of 30 months and renewable thereafter, for Group 2 refugees (i.e. whose entry in the UK is considered unlawful). However, the Home Office paused the categorisation of refugees into such groups in July 2023.

Application for a UK visa from Pakistan will start with identifying the visa type appropriate in your circumstances. Please visit the UKVI website to determine what type of visa you will have to apply for, and what supporting documents you will be required to submit along with your visa application depending on your chosen visa type.

The UK visa application is an online process. You will have to create an account on the UKVI site to start with your visa application process, and follow the instructions carefully as provided on the site while filling up the online application form.

You may be required to pay the visa fees as well as a healthcare surcharge, if applicable, while filling up your online application. You may use a debit or credit card to pay the fees. Please note the reference number after paying the fees, which may be required for any future amendments to your application or visa appointment.

You will also have to upload your supporting documents online while applying for your UK visa. For people who do not have a scanner available or who are not comfortable using the internet, VFS Global can help them with uploading their documents in exchange for a service charge.

Once your online application is complete, please book an appointment with your nearest VFS Global centre in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi or Mirpur. On the date of your appointment, please visit the centre in person where your biometric information, i.e. fingerprints and facial image, will be taken. You will also have to submit your original passport (or any other travel document as applicable) at the centre.

The centre will get in touch with you once they have received your visa decision for collecting your passport. You may do so in person by visiting the centre, or VFS Global will send it to your address by courier for an additional fee.

Your UK visa processing time will vary depending on the visa type, the time of year, the volume of applications being handled by the visa authorities at the time of your application, and your personal circumstances.

In general, while visit, work, study and business visas take up to three weeks for processing, you may have to wait for up to 24 weeks to receive a decision on your UK family visa application. If UKVI will need more information for processing your visa, your waiting time will increase further.

UK visa fees vary depending on the type of visa, and whether the application is being made from within the UK or outside.

Choose the Right UK Visa Type

Selecting the appropriate UK visa type is crucial for a successful application. Understanding the purpose of your visit is key to choosing the right visa category. Here are some common visa types for individuals from Pakistan planning to visit the UK:

1. UK Tourist Visa

The UK Tourist Visa, formally known as the Standard Visitor Visa, is designed for individuals wishing to visit the United Kingdom for leisure, tourism, visiting family or friends, participating in sports or creative events, or conducting business-related activities for a short duration.

2. UK Transit Visa

The UK Transit Visa is for individuals passing through the United Kingdom on their way to another destination. This visa allows entry into the UK for a short period solely for the purpose of transit and doesn’t permit stays beyond the transit duration or engaging in other activities.

3. UK Work Visa

The UK offers several work visas catering to individuals planning to work in the country, each designed for different purposes and eligibility criteria. Here are some of the primary work visas:

  • Skilled Worker Visa: This visa is for individuals who have a job offer from a UK employer with a valid sponsor license. Applicants must meet specific skill and salary requirements relevant to the job.
  • Intra-Company Transfer Visa: Designed for employees of multinational companies who need to be transferred to a UK branch for training or to fill a specific position.
  • Global Talent Visa: Aimed at exceptionally talented individuals in fields like science, engineering, humanities, digital technology, arts, and research.
  • Startup Visa and Innovator Visa: For entrepreneurs looking to start a business or develop an innovative business idea in the UK. These visas require endorsement from authorized bodies.
  • Temporary Worker Visa: Offers opportunities for seasonal workers, religious workers, and individuals participating in specific government-approved exchange programs.

As immigration rules and visa requirements are subject to change and can differ based on individual circumstances, it’s important to refer to the official UK government website or seek guidance from qualified immigration advisors for the most updated and accurate information before applying for a UK Work Visa.

4. UK Study Visa

The UK Study Visa, officially known as the Student Visa (Tier 4), is designed for individuals who wish to pursue their education in the United Kingdom. Whether it’s for a degree program, a short course, or an English language course, this visa allows international students to study in the UK.

5. Other Visas Types

Certainly! Alongside the major visa categories like work, study, tourist, and transit visas, the UK offers several other visas catering to specific purposes and situations:

  • Family Visa: For individuals who wish to join family members who are either UK citizens or settled residents, including spouses, partners, children, and dependent relatives.
  • Start-up and Innovator Visas: Specifically for entrepreneurs who want to start a business or develop an innovative idea in the UK, requiring endorsement from authorized bodies.
  • Health and Care Visa: Designed for health professionals from various fields, offering faster entry, reduced visa fees, and dedicated support for NHS and social care workers.
  • Graduate Route Visa: Introduced for international students who have completed a degree at a UK higher education institution, providing the opportunity to work or seek employment in the UK for up to 2 years (3 years for Ph.D. graduates).
  • Permitted Paid Engagement Visa: For individuals invited to the UK for short-term paid engagements in specific fields like arts, academia, or science.

These visa categories have their own sets of eligibility criteria, application processes, and specific requirements tailored to their purposes.

Complete the Online Application Form

Here is the guide you through the general steps and information required to complete an online visa application form for the UK:

  • Access the Official Website: Visit the official UK government website for visas and immigration.
  • Create an Account: If you haven’t already, you might need to create an account on the website to start the application process.
  • Select the Visa Type: Choose the specific visa category you’re applying for (e.g., tourist visa, work visa, study visa) and locate the corresponding application form.
  • Fill in Personal Information: The form will typically ask for personal details such as your name, date of birth, nationality, passport information, contact details, and current address.
  • Provide Travel Details: Include your intended travel dates, purpose of visit, planned accommodation details in the UK, and any other relevant travel information.
  • Employment and Financial Information: Depending on the visa type, you might need to provide details about your employment, income, and financial status. For some visas, evidence of sufficient funds to cover expenses might be required.
  • Supporting Documents: Prepare the necessary documents as outlined in the application guidelines. You might need to upload scans or copies of your passport, photographs, invitation letters, bank statements, travel itinerary, or other supporting documents.
  • Review and Submit: Before submitting the form, review all the entered information carefully to ensure accuracy. Once satisfied, submit the application.

Collect the Required Documents

The required documents for a UK visa application can vary depending on the type of visa you are applying for and your individual circumstances. However, there’s a general list of documents often required for various types of UK visas:

  • Valid Passport: Your passport should be valid for the duration of your intended stay in the UK and have at least one blank page for the visa.
  • Visa Application Form: A completed and signed visa application form, available on the official UK government website.
  • Biometric Information: For many visa types, you’ll need to provide biometric data (fingerprints and photographs) at a visa application center.
  • Photographs: Recent passport-sized photographs meeting specific size and quality requirements.
  • Letter of Invitation (if applicable): If you’re visiting family or friends, a letter of invitation from your host in the UK may be required.
  • Proof of Accommodation: Details of where you’ll be staying during your visit, such as hotel reservations or a letter from your host.
  • Travel Itinerary: Details of your travel plans, including flight bookings, intended dates of entry and exit, and any travel within the UK.
  • Financial Proof: Evidence of sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay, such as bank statements, payslips, sponsorship letters, or financial support documents.
  • Employment/Income Information: Details of your current employment, including a letter from your employer stating your job position, salary, and approved leave (if applicable).
  • Purpose-Specific Documents: Additional documents specific to the purpose of your visit, such as acceptance letters from educational institutions (for students), job offer letters (for work visas), or medical treatment details (for medical visas).
  • Health Insurance (if required): Some visa categories might require proof of adequate health insurance coverage for the duration of your stay.

It’s advisable to ensure that all documents are presented in the required format and meet the specified criteria to avoid delays or issues with your application.

Schedule a UK Visa Appointment

After making the appointment online, print the email confirming the details of your appointment, and take it with you to the UK visa application center you have chosen to attend, together with the required documents.

The documents required in the original must be submitted in original. Make sure that the documents are as required because sometimes even a little mistake can cause a lot of trouble. Please note that the appointment must be made in your name, not in someone else’s.

Attend the UK Visa Interview

For certain visa types or in specific situations, the UK visa application process may include an interview as part of the assessment. Here’s what you might expect during a UK visa interview:

  • Notification: If an interview is required as part of your visa application process, you’ll receive communication from the UK Visa and Immigration authorities specifying the date, time, and location of the interview.
  • Purpose: The interview aims to further assess the details provided in your visa application. It may cover aspects related to your travel plans, purpose of visit, ties to your home country, financial status, and other relevant information.
  • Preparation: Before the interview, review your visa application thoroughly and ensure you understand the details you’ve provided. Be ready to answer questions regarding your travel plans, accommodations, intended activities in the UK, and your ties to your home country.
  • Documentation: Bring all the required documents as specified for your visa type. This might include your passport, financial statements, travel itinerary, sponsor letters, employment details, and any other supporting documents.
  • Interview Process: The interview may be conducted by a consular officer or an immigration official. It can take place in person at a visa application center or via video call, depending on the circumstances.
  • Communication: Answer questions honestly and clearly. Be concise but provide detailed information when necessary. Speak confidently and respectfully during the interview.
  • Additional Information: If the interviewer requests further details or documents, provide them promptly and accurately.
  • Behavior and Demeanor: Show respect and professionalism throughout the interview. Be polite, composed, and cooperative.
  • Follow-Up: After the interview, you may be informed about the next steps in the visa application process. This could include further processing, additional document requests, or the decision on your visa application.

It’s advisable to familiarize yourself with the details of your visa application and the requirements outlined by the UK Visa and Immigration authorities before attending the interview. Every applicant who is submitting a visa application must attend the visa application center in person, including children. Applicants under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

UK Visa Application Denial

Facing a denial on a UK visa application can be disappointing and stressful. If your UK visa application is denied, here are some possible reasons:

  • Missing Documents.
  • Applying for the wrong type of visa.
  • Failure to prove you have the financial means to support your stay in the UK.
  • Fraudulent documents.
  • You have overstayed on a previous trip.
  • Criminal history.

It’s essential to act promptly but thoughtfully after a visa application denial. Take the time to thoroughly understand the reasons for the denial and take appropriate steps to strengthen your case before reapplying or appealing. Each case is unique, so seeking tailored advice from professionals can greatly assist in improving your chances of a successful application.

How to Appeal Against the UK Visa Denial?

It’s crucial to adhere to the specific instructions provided in the rejection letter and follow the appeal process accurately and promptly. Can I Extend my UK Visa?

Extending your UK visa while in the UK is possible. However, the process differs depending on the visa type you hold. If you are in the UK on a standard visitor visa, you will be eligible to apply for a visa extension as long as the total time you spend in the UK is less than 6 months. It’s possible to extend your stay in the UK under certain circumstances. The eligibility and process for extending a UK visa depend on various factors, including the type of visa you currently hold and the reason for the extension.

Here are some key points regarding visa extensions in the UK:

  • Visa Type: The ability to extend your visa depends on the type of visa you currently hold. Some visas may allow extensions while others may not.
  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible for an extension, you typically need to meet specific criteria set by the UK Visa and Immigration authorities. This might include having a valid reason for extending your stay, financial stability to support yourself, and adhering to immigration rules.
  • Application Process: You’ll need to apply for an extension before your current visa expires. The application process involves completing the appropriate form, paying the required fee, and submitting supporting documents to justify the extension.
  • Supporting Documents: Depending on the reason for the extension, you might need to provide documents such as proof of finances, a sponsor letter (if applicable), evidence of ongoing studies or employment, and a valid passport.
  • Duration of Extension: The duration of the extension granted can vary based on your circumstances and the visa type. It might be possible to extend for a few months or even longer, depending on the situation.
  • Processing Time: Extension processing times can vary, so it’s advisable to apply well in advance of your current visa’s expiration date.

Before applying for an extension, carefully review the visa conditions and guidelines provided by the UK Visa and Immigration authorities. Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria and submit a complete application to increase the likelihood of a successful extension.

UK Visitor Visa: Eligibility Criteria for Pakistani citizens

While Pakistani citizens are eligible for the UK Standard Visitor Visa, you must also meet other criteria, which include:

  • Intention to leave the UK: You must demonstrate your plans to depart the UK at the end of your visit.
  • Financial capability: You must prove you have the means to support yourself and any dependents during your trip. If someone else will be funding your journey, you must provide evidence of their financial support.
  • Return or onward journey: You must show you can pay for your return or onward trip from the UK.
  • Short-term stay: Your visit shouldn’t involve living in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits, nor should you intend to travel on indefinite leave.

Understanding the diverse UK visa types and their specific requirements is key to a successful application. From tourist visas to work permits, each category demands careful attention to detail. For those facing a denial, addressing concerns in an appeal is crucial. Likewise, knowing the criteria for extending a stay ensures a smooth continuation. Staying informed and seeking guidance when needed can greatly enhance visa prospects and pave the way for a fulfilling experience in the UK.

A family permit lets you live, work and study in the UK for up to 6 months. You can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to stay in the UK after your family permit expires. You usually need to apply within 3 months of arriving in the UK.

Other ways to get permission to live in the UK

If you’re from the eu, switzerland, norway, iceland or liechtenstein.

If you started living in the UK by 31 December 2020, you may be able to apply to the free EU Settlement Scheme instead of applying for a visa. The deadline to apply was 30 June 2021, but you can still apply if you can show reasonable grounds for the delay in applying.

You’ll need to apply for a returning resident visa to come back to the UK if one of the following is true:

you had indefinite leave to remain under the EU Settlement Scheme (‘settled status’) and left the UK for more than 5 continuous years (or 4 continuous years if you’re a Swiss citizen or their family member)

you had permanent permission to stay in the UK (‘indefinite leave to remain’) but it was not under the EU Settlement Scheme and you left the UK for more than 2 years

Other visas

There may be another visa that’s right for you based on your circumstances. Check if you need a visa and what other visas you’re eligible for.
