What is Lovina Bali like?

Golden valley from the road

Lovina is situated in the Buleleng Regency and is known for its black sand beaches, calm waters, and coral reefs. Lovina is located approximately 90 kilometers (56 miles) from the island’s capital, Denpasar. This is an ideal location if you’re looking for a quieter and more laid-back alternative to the busy southern parts of Bali.

Lovina is home to a large population of dolphins, and visitors can take a boat tour to see them in their natural habitat. The town has a population of around 10,000 people. The climate in Lovina is tropical, with temperatures averaging around 27°C (81°F) throughout the year. The town offers a range of accommodations, from budget guesthouses to luxury resorts, as well as restaurants, bars, and shops. There are also several ATMs in Lovina and small laundrettes (they normally charge around 15,000IDR – 20,000IDR per kilogram and return clothes the following day)

What is our honest opinion of Lovina?

Family friendly dolphin tours Bali

We really love visiting Lovina. It is worth being aware that the journey to Lovina from the south of Bali is long and can be pretty tiring. The roads are narrow and slow – especially in the last hilly section of the journey. Lovina itself has nice chilled vibes with a splash of tourism. If we’re honest the town itself lacks character and style – but there is a nice section of cafes, shops and hotels near the beach. We do think Lovina is worth visiting – especially if you have a few weeks in Bali. The main draw of Lovina is the attractions – most of these are in the Lovina area (rather than in the town itself).

How do you get to Lovina?

Don’t miss our FULL GUIDE on how to get around in Bali

1 Rent a motorbike

perama tour lovina

The cheapest way to get to Lovina Bali is rent a motorbike and ride. The journey to Lovina from the South of Bali is very long (likely to take 3 hours or more by bike). We recommend planning a few stops along the way. For example you could visit Ubud and check out the rice terraces. You could also stop at Bedugul town and see the iconic Ulun Danu Beratan lake temple. Bike rental in Bali is cheap, simple and readily available. You can rent bikes from many shops and guest houses in towns around Bali. Bike rental normally costs around 100,000IDR – 200,000IDR per day (roughly £5 – £10 per day or $6 – $12). You can normally negotiate cheaper deals if you are taking a longer rental period.

Don’t miss our epic guide Bali by bike – intrepid independent adventures around Bali by motorbike with maps, things to do and places to stay

2 Take a shared minibus

Bali shuttle bus

One of the most convenient ways to travel to Lovina is to take a shared minibus. If you’re looking for a good company check out Perama Tour: 250,000IDR per person with a minimum booking of two people (this is roughly £14 or $16 per person).

3 Rent a car and drive

Bali road trip

Another excellent way to get to Lovina is to rent a car and drive. Make sure you are fully qualified and insured to drive in Bali. We recommend using an international drivers license. The cheapest way to get a good rental deal on a car in Bali is contact a local rental company and negotiate a deal. They can generally drop off in various locations – but may charge an additional fee if you’re not close to their office. Expect to pay around 200,000IDR – 400,000IDR per day (roughly £10 – £20 per day or $12 – $24). Petrol is very cheap in Bali. A big advantage of a rental car is the freedom to stop, explore, go at your own pace and use the car to explore Lovina.

4 Take a taxi

perama tour lovina

Another way to get to Lovina is use a private taxi. You can get taxis on the Grab taxi app – and some drivers may be willing to take you at short notice as they can make a lot of money for this journey. Private cars from Kuta to Lovina are likely to cost around 700,000IDR – 1,000,000IDR (roughly £40 – £50 or $50 – $60) . This is not cheap – but remember if you’re traveling as a family or group – the cost is divided across your group.

You can pre-book private cars around Bali on Klook for great prices

What is the best way to get around Lovina?

Ubud by bike

The BEST way to get around in Lovina is on your own steam. You can use Grab to order taxis in the area – and this is fine for the town itself. But you will find taxis add up if you’re exploring the area. Many of the attractions are around 10km out of town (or more). This can make it expensive to use taxis to get around. ALSO, if you’re exploring more remote attractions you may not have phone signal to use Grab and taxis may not respond on Grab (too far to pick you up).

If you decide to explore the Lovina area by motorbike be aware that some of the roads in the hills to the south of Lovina are very steep – and the roads are not suitable for bikes. We recommend sticking to the main roads by bike and don’t take shortcuts!

What is the best time of year to visit Lovina?

Golden valley waterfall 1

The best time of year to visit Lovina, Bali is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. During this time, the weather is sunny and dry, with less rainfall and lower humidity than the wet season. This makes it an ideal time for outdoor activities such as dolphin watching, snorkeling, and hiking.

The peak tourist season in Lovina is from June to August, so if you prefer to avoid the crowds, it’s best to visit in April, May, September, or October. During these months, the weather is still pleasant, but there are fewer tourists, so you can enjoy a more peaceful and authentic Balinese experience.

It’s worth noting that Bali’s weather can be unpredictable, and sudden rain showers can occur at any time of the year. However, during the dry season, these showers are usually short-lived and don’t interfere too much with outdoor activities. So the best time to visit Lovina Bali is during the dry season from April to October, with April, May, September, and October being the best months to avoid the crowds.

What are the BEST things to do around Lovina Bali?

1 take a dolphin watching sunrise tour.

Lovina dolphins bali the backpacking family

If you’re looking for epic things to do in Lovina Bali we highly recommend a Lovina dolphin trip . This was one of our personal highlights of Bali. The Lovina dolphin trips typically set off early in the morning (normally around 5.30am – 7am) depending on whether you want to see the sunrise. Boats take you out into Lovina bay to follow and watch pods of dolphins playing. After this you may get the chance to hop into the water and see dolphins swimming. Most boats have a bar that you can hold onto at the side of the boat to see dolphins swimming underwater.

The dolphin tours on KLOOK are very competitive for prices

They often include a stop at a section of coral reef for snorkeling, swimming and seeing the Lovina Sea Sculptures. Some dolphin tours may also include breakfasts and drinks. If you’re doing the dolphin trip with kids we strongly recommend bringing a breakfast that you know they will eat plus plenty of kid friendly snacks and drinks. Also remember a high factor sunscreen (SPF50+) and if possible use SPF rash guards. Lovina dolphin watching trips normally cost 75,000IDR – 300,000IDR per person ($5 – $20 or £3.50 – £16). A private boat trip is likely to cost around 700,000IDR (around £40 or $45).

2 Relax at Banjar hot spring

Banjar hot springs lovina things to do in Bali

If you’re exploring Lovina don’t miss the beautiful Banjar Hot Spring . This is a beautiful ornate hot spring immersed in the tropical jungle of North Bali. The Banjar Hot Spring has several geothermal pools with water spouts, statues and beautiful stone carvings. A dip at the Banjar Hot Spring is a very unique and relaxing experience. There are changing rooms, lockers and toilets available. There is parking nearby. Entrance costs 20,000IDR (around £1 or $1.20) and a small fee for lockers and toilets. The hot springs are open daily 8.30am – 5.30pm. TOP TIP: Don’t wear any white or light coloured swimming clothing – the water can stain clothes here.

3 Trek to the Golden Valley waterfall

Golden valley waterfall 3

If you’re looking for adventurous things to do in Lovina then we highly recommend a visit to the Golden Valley waterfalls located in the remote jungle hills of northern Bali. The Golden Valley is a deep and beautiful jungle valley located in the Munduk region. There are several impressive waterfalls in this area. To trek to these beautiful remote waterfalls you need to park on the road (there are a few small laybys).

You can walk down steep jungle trails to see these impressive waterfalls – the trails tend to be well signed in this area. These beautiful waterfalls are much quieter than the waterfalls located to the south of Bali. If you visit the Golden Valley waterfalls you are likely to have the place to yourself – especially if you hang around for a little while. There is an Eco cafe located at the main Golden Valley waterfall.

If you are planning to visit the Golden Valley bring plenty of water and snacks. Wear good shoes because the trails are steep and muddy in places. We also recommend using sun protection and bringing mosquito repellant. The best way to access these waterfalls is by car or motorbike. You can rent cars pretty cheaply in Bali and driving allows you to access more remote and quieter locations off the beaten track. Make sure that you are fully qualified and insured to drive in Bali. The Golden Valley waterfall is FREE to visit and there are no opening hours here.

4 Check out the Lovina Sea Sculpture Park

Sea sculpture crab bali lovina

Don’t miss the Lovina Sea Sculpture park . This is included on some dolphin watching trips. Speak to your guide when you book. This sculpture park is a set of sea creature sculptures including a dolphin, crab and a seahorse. The average depth is around 5 – 6m and the currents can also be strong here too. These sculptures are quieter than the Bask Nest. The best way to visit the Lovina Sea Sculptures is to take a dolphin watching trip and request a stop at the sea sculptures. Lovina dolphin watching trips normally cost 75,000IDR – 300,000IDR per person ($5 – $20 or £3.50 – £16). A private boat trip is likely to cost around 700,000IDR (around £40 or $45). If you are not a strong swimmer we recommend using a life jacket. Fins are also very important due to currents in the area.

5 Explore the Brahmavihara-Arama

Bali-Hindu-statue-sculpture

If you’re looking for cultural things to do in Lovina then don’t miss the Brahmavihara-Arama temple, located in the village of Banjar near Lovina. It was built in 1970 by the local Buddhist community and is known for its unique blend of Balinese and Buddhist architectural styles. The temple is also known as Vihara Buddha Banjar, and it is the largest Buddhist monastery in Bali. Brahmavihara-Arama temple is a testament to the religious harmony that exists on the island of Bali, where different religions coexist peacefully. The temple also plays an important role in the local community, offering a place of worship and spiritual guidance to the Balinese Buddhists.

Visiting the Brahmavihara-Arama temple is a unique experience that allows you to immerse yourself in both Balinese and Buddhist culture. The temple complex is situated on a hillside and is surrounded by lush greenery, providing a peaceful and serene atmosphere. The main prayer hall is decorated with intricate carvings and features statues of Buddha, Bodhisattvas, and other important figures from Buddhist mythology. Brahmavihara-Arama temple is open every day from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and there is no entrance fee. When visiting the temple, it is important to dress modestly and respectfully, covering your shoulders and knees.

6 Stay at the Munduk Moding Resort & Plantations

Munduk infinity pool

If you’re in Lovina don’t miss the awesome Munduk Moding mountain resort and coffee plantation . This stunning resort is beautifully situated in the northern mountains of Bali – with a north facing terrace and infinity pool overlooking jungle mountains and the Bali sea. Immersed in lush jungle and surrounded by coffee plantations and gardens – this is the perfect place to disconnect from the chaos of life and reconnect with nature.

They have a range of spacious suites and villas (including a 2 bedroom private pool villa with a jacuzzi) They also serve exquisite food and home grown coffee. Suites and villas typically range between £200 – £700 per night – this is amazing value for a resort of this caliber! This is the perfect place to splash out on a special occasion – or just because you can.

7 Visit the Wanagiri coffee plantations

Coffee beans growing

Wanagiri Coffee plantation is a small beautiful family run plantation located in the northern hills of Bali near Danau Buyan lake. This is also one of the most authentic and ethical coffee plantations in Bali. They produce Kopi Luwak from wild Luwak beans (not from caged animals). This lovely family has run this farm for many generations and they really understand how to produce the finest coffee – each stage of the process is carefully done by hand. As a result, coffee is more expensive here. The location of this plantation may be too remote if you’re not planning to visit north Bali. However, this really is one of THE BEST coffee plantations in Bali. It costs 50,000IDR for a tour and 50,000IDR for coffee sampling. Open daily from 8am – 10pm. Find out more about coffee plantations in Bali

8 Relax with a massage at Angung’s Spa & Massage centre

flower bath 3

If you’re looking for relaxing activities in Lovina Bali why not get a traditional massage. There are several spas around town offering a range of relaxing treatments. We highly recommend Angung’s spa and Massage. This is a small beautiful spa with natural vibes. There is also a lovely cafe here too. The prices for treatments are very reasonable as well: Prices range from 100,000IDR – 700,000IDR at Angung’s spa (roughly £5 – £35 or $6 – $40). Packages range from a simple foot massage, to whole body oil massage with body cleansing and Balinese flower baths. This spa is open daily from 11am – 7pm. In general you don’t need to make appointments as it’s not too busy here.

The Ultimate Guide To Lovina, Bali: A Hidden Gem In North Bali

Lovina in North Bali doesn’t get too many tourists as of yet, but things are changing, and that’s because the black sand beaches , the crystal blue waters of the Indian Ocean and the amazing waterfalls in this area are starting to bring people North.

It’s cheaper than the parts of Bali that see more tourists, such as Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta and Legian, and it’s also far more laid back.

Lovina is Bali as it once was, and that’s a good thing. Of course, as more tourists head to Lovina, it will become more developed, but for now, it’s an unspoiled gem that deserves some love and attention from visitors to Bali.

Where Is Lovina Beach/Lovina?

LOVINA FINNS BALI MAP

Lovina is short for Lovina Beach, and it refers to a strip of the coast on the West Coast of Bali, around 15 kilometres from the town of Singaraja.

Singaraja is the capital of the Buleleng Regency. Lovina Beach encompasses several small and attractive villages, including Pemaron, Tukad Mungga, Anutran, Temukus, Kaliasem, Kalibukbuk and Banyuality.

Lovina is, in fact, an abbreviation of the phrase “Love Indonesia”, and it was given to the area by Pandji Tisna.

He was a regent of the Buleleng Regency briefly before abdicating the throne in favour of his own brother, and he saw the potential for tourism to reinvigorate the area.

He was so visionary that he is still known today as “the father of Balinese tourism” and he was given a posthumous award by the government for his huge service to tourism on the island.

Pandji Tisna was a remarkable figure who probably ought to be better known among tourists than he is.

The village of Kalibukbuk is the closest that Lovina has to a town centre. The whole coast is also “Lovina Beach” because it is essentially a single black sand beach broken up slightly into narrow black sand beaches.

How To Get To Lovina Beach?

You’ve got quite a few options to reach Lovina, and they include the following:

Perama bus Bali

The Perama company has buses that run between most of the major tourist spots in Bali, and Lovina is no exception.

There’s a Perama office in Anturan near Lovin Beach where you can buy tickets to other parts of Bali.

They offer shuttles from Kuta, Sanur, Ubud, Candidasa, and Padang Bai direct to Lovina, and you can usually catch a separate shuttle from other places in Bali to one of these spots to get to Lovina Beach.

However, you should be warned that this service uses mini-buses, and they do not have any air conditioning installed. That means the journey can be a bit hot and uncomfortable, particularly if you’re travelling with small children.

There is also a bus from Singaraja to Java that passes through Lovina. This service is operated by Menggala.

The big advantage of taking the bus is that it will save you money, but it may not save you time and will be somewhat uncomfortable.

scooter in highway Bali during dry season

We don’t recommend riding scooters in Bali. Our position on this is that a.) it’s hard to be road-legal and b.) it’s not very safe.

To be road-legal, you must have a current driving license with a motorbike endorsement (a standard car license won’t cut it), a current international driver’s permit (IDP), a helmet (which must be worn; it’s not an ornament) and you must be sober.

If you’re not road-legal, you’re not insured. That means if you have an accident, you will have to pay for treatment. Travel insurance cannot cover people who aren’t road-legal.

In fact, it’s also worth noting that travel insurance often has strict limits on what it will pay out, and your travel insurance policy might prove inadequate in the case of an accident. If you are legal, make sure to check the small print.

While healthcare in Bali can be cheaper than it is in some Western nations, it’s not unheard of for fees to run into tens of thousands of dollars for serious accidents.

And accidents are likely on Balinese roads. There are very few “rules of the road” here, and those that do exist aren’t the same as the ones you follow back home.

Even experienced riders find this part of the world’s traffic and roads hard to handle. Newbies may find them impossible.

Handsome man driving car enjoying road trip on vacation Transport, summer vacation and holiday

You can easily rent a private car and private driver from the Bali Res Centre (see below in the FAQs for their contact details), and while it costs a bit more than a bus or a scooter, it’s much safer, and you can enjoy the journey and the sight of the Balinese countryside and mountains.

This is our recommended option for getting to Lovina for most people. It’s not going to cost much more than a taxi and will probably cost less than an airport transfer service from a hotel.

635227614

You can, of course, get a taxi (prepaid at the airport if you’re at Ngurah Rai International Airport) or flag one down, but we’d recommend you use Grab or Gojek instead.

These ride-sharing apps are far more convenient and reduce the chance of you being ripped off dramatically.

You can even link them to your cards so that you don’t need to pay in cash. In fact, you can tip on the app, too, if you want to.

Airport Transfer Service

Singapore Airlines

Perhaps the most convenient way to get to Lovina Beach is to use an airport transfer service provided by your hotel or accommodation.

This won’t be the cheapest way to get there, but it will involve someone waiting for you upon arrival at Denpasar Airport and waving a sign with your name on it.

They will help you with your bags and drive you by the fastest route to your destination. They will usually help you unpack on the other end, too.

Sometimes, it’s worth paying a little premium for the best service.

How To Get Around Lovina?

dolphin swimming in Atlantic Ocean near the coast of Tenereife

Lovina is an excellent area to walk around. Lovina Beach and the surrounding region have relatively quiet and relaxed roads, and the beaches are fine to walk on.

You can also easily use a bicycle. Most hotels rent them or provide them for their guests for free.

Just be warned, if you stray from the coastal roads and paths, the roads in Lovina can be very steep, indeed.

It’s fair to say that the roads in Lovina Beach are surprisingly well-maintained (for Bali), and you should be fine on a bike.

You could also rent a scooter or motorbike (we still don’t recommend it, mind you) as this is quite cheap. The good news is that there’s nowhere near as much traffic as there is elsewhere in Bali, reducing the chances of accidents considerably.

Grab and Gojek do, officially, work in Lovina Beach and the surrounding area, but you may find that drivers are few and far between.

So, don’t rely on apps. If you find that you really must be somewhere at a certain time, it’s best to arrange a taxi or transport with your hotel – they will be only too pleased to help, though the service might come at a bit of a premium.

About Lovina & Lovina Beach

Lovina, to many people, is the “real Bali”. It’s where you can still rent a two-bedroom villa without spending a week’s wages on a day’s rent.

You can live out in the rice paddies and enjoy free Wi-Fi and then roam the Lovina area and beach to your heart’s content.

You can enjoy dolphins, snorkelling, lush green rice fields, live music on a Friday night, diving, and much more, besides.

The locals are seriously relaxed, and they love to welcome travellers to the area.

A trip to Lovina is always great value, too, as hotels, villas, resorts, restaurants, boats, etc., are all cheaper to use than they are in most of the rest of the island.

If you want to relax and don’t fancy the mountains of Ubud, you’re likely to find that this part of Indonesia is an excellent choice for a trip down the coast to a very different part of Bali.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Lovina Beach?

Young lady in high grass on cloudy weather

You can visit Lovina Beach at any time of the year. During the rainy season, Bali sees, on average, 9 hours of sunshine a day!

Yes, it doesn’t rain all day long. However, it is hotter and more humid in the rainy season, and there will be times that you want to take shelter in your hotel or, at the very least, use one of those Bali rain macs that scooter riders use.

In the dry season , it’s a bit cooler, and there’s a pleasant onshore breeze, which makes lounging around on the beach a bit easier.

But we’ve never found that it makes enough difference to most activities and you will pay more for accommodation and flights if you opt for the peak season.

What To See & Do In And Around Lovina & Lovina Beach

This part of Bali isn’t as full of attractions as the main tourist destinations, but it has plenty to do all the same, and it’s worth noting that it has a great live music scene, unlike, say sleepy Sanur.

Some of the top things to do in Lovina include:

See The Dolphin Statue

Bottle nosed Dolphin Sandwich Bay Namibia

If you follow the beachfront at Kalibukbuk to the end, you will find a rather decrepit dolphin statue.

The dolphins, bless them, have seen better days and are rusting away, but it’s worth stopping here for two reasons.

The first is to remember that the reason for much of the development around Lovina Beach is the dolphin-watching experiences on offer just off the coast.

The second is to understand why all the dolphin souvenirs that you will be offered in and around town look the same, and they’re all meant to be replicas of this statue in its glory days.

Dolphin Watching

Dolphins jump out of the sea in Hualien harbor of Taiwan

We don’t know how dolphins feel about being watched, but we do know that you will need to get up early (most tours will start at 6 a.m. sharp and then go for two hours) to see the packs of creatures splash through the water.

This could be a truly magical experience if it weren’t for the fact that every single soul in Lovina will be doing the same thing, and you will often find 100 or more boats on the water out to see the cetaceans.

Don’t book tours from February to April, and they are likely to be cancelled due to weather problems. It appears that dolphins don’t like rain any more than we do.

Some people argue that this whole process isn’t nice to our mammalian friends, but given that this form of tourism has been going on in Lovina for a long while and the dolphins keep coming back, it seems unlikely that they are all that bothered about being watched.

If you feel that they might be, you could try looking for a tour that leaves later in the day, and then you will have fewer boats out on the water to stress the creatures.

Lovina Beach Festival

Lovina Beach Festival

Every year, in July or August, there is a three-day festival in Lovina, which is meant to showcase the heritage of the local area.

There is live music, traditional dance and art exhibitions, and it all takes place along the beachfront.

It’s a really fun and memorable experience during which tourists and locals bond really well and celebrate all day long.

It’s also the best time of year to try the local cuisine as there are many stalls set up at the festival showcasing specific local dishes.

Long Beach Walks

soka beach bali golden tour

The beach here is a great place for a stroll, and you can walk from one end of the beach to the other (all 11 kilometres of it) with relatively few interruptions.

When you do find your way obstructed, you can simply walk onto the road, go a few meters further and then return to the beach.

It is fair to say that “black sand” often becomes “brown sand”, but that’s OK. The scenery is still beautiful, and it’s an experience that you can’t enjoy in many other places in the world.

Hiking In The Rice Fields

Processed with VSCO with we preset

You can also go hiking through the local rice fields. We’d recommend that you wear some shoes and long trousers for this – it helps to protect you against local insects and helps you make more noise to deter any snakes ( Bali has quite a lot of snakes ) that might be lurking around.

Bali has plenty of snakes, but the good news is they’re much more afraid of you than you are of them, and tourists are rarely bitten by snakes.

Take your camera, and you can get some majestic shots of the Balinese countryside in Lovina.

Finns Beach Club Beach Party Happy People On Daybed

We firmly believe that sunbathing is good for the soul and for your health as it’s the best way to produce Vitamin D naturally in your body.

We also believe that sunbathing is best when you don’t burn because getting burned sucks.

So, please make sure to take some sun lotion with you and use it on a regular basis.

You may also find that sunglasses and a sunhat can help shade your eyes and prevent you from getting heat stroke.

There’s no need to overdo things when it comes to sunbathing, and the sun is here almost every day in Bali.

Sunset Watching

Beautiful sunset and silhouette of different people on the beach

Sunsets in Lovina are very pleasant, and it’s a great idea to hit one of the bars near the beach and enjoy a cocktail or a cold Bintang and watch the light fracture over the horizon as the sun disappears below it.

The colours are spectacular, and there’s something very soothing about this glorious natural process.

You could also take a (romantic) walk down the beach during sunset and enjoy the atmosphere in a more secluded location.

Star Gazing

One really nice thing about this part of Bali is that Lovina has very little light pollution at night.

You can go out and stare up at the skies in a way that you simply cannot in the more developed parts of the island.

If you’re an astrophotographer, bring a fast and wide lens and head up the hills with a tripod to capture some spectacular starscapes.

People don’t talk about this benefit of being in North Bali often enough, but it’s lovely to be able to feel yourself as a part of the whole universe.

Above view of couple snorkeling in sea water

Some people say that the black sand beaches of the Lovina Beach area aren’t good for swimming, but we beg to differ.

In fact, most of the beaches in Lovina are perfectly safe to swim at and have much calmer waters than the crashing surf that you find in South Bali . The Bali Sea doesn’t get much better.

Sure, the sand can be warmer in the heat of the day than the typical white sand, but that can help you dry off faster and as long as you wear some thongs and put a towel down to sit on, you won’t burn or come to any harm.

Snorkelling

DCIM100GOPROGOPR0806

Lovina is a great spot for snorkelling, and you can easily rent or buy a mask and flippers in the area, and you won’t break the bank doing so.

The local marine life is varied and interesting, and the waters if more than clear enough to enjoy fascinating sights of the creatures as they flit about under the water, having fun and living life.

It’s much less busy in the water at Lovina, too, so you should have no problem finding a spot all to yourself. Isn’t that what life on a paradise island is all about?

Watch out for cardinal fish, angel fish, and even Nemo himself here.

Krisna Water Park

Krisna Funtastic Land Theme Park

This small water park isn’t anything as good as  Splash Water Park  in Canggu, but if you want a place to cool down and spend an hour or two having some fun in Lovina, it will do.

They have a wave pool, three big slides, three small children’s areas to play in and a lazy river.

There’s a swim-up bar in the lazy river, and they do a decent cocktail there.

Krisna Theme Park (Krisna Funtastic Land)

Krisna Theme Park (Krisna Funtastic Land)

This is right next door to the Krisna Water Park and the Krisna shopping complex.

Don’t expect Disneyland standards, and you won’t be disappointed. This is more like a traditional country fare than a multi-billion dollar conglomerate’s effort to sell you cuddly toys.

It’s very cheap to get in (though the price goes up on weekends), and you have to pay to get on each ride. We’d be surprised if you could spend over 300,000 IDR if you went on every ride in the park.

In the evening, there is a light display, which is included in the ticket price and during the day, there are some pleasant gardens to stroll in.

Banjar Hot Springs

Banjar Hot Springs - Bali

Just a couple of miles outside of the town are the Banjar Hot Springs, and they’re a very popular place for relaxing and meditating with locals and travellers alike.

There are four pools to choose from (the biggest pool has a cafe, some restrooms, paid lockers, comfortable changing facilities and even spa treatments and massage).

The area is very well laid out, and it’s an enjoyable experience. You can even buy souvenirs from the shops out the front. If you like this check out our  Best Bali Hot Springs  guide for more hot springs on the island.

Brahma Vihara Arama Buddhist Monastery

Brahma Vihara Arama Buddhist Monastery

This monastery is often called “Little Borabadur” by those in the know, and it’s a gorgeous place that is also one of the largest monasteries for Buddhists in Bali.

The architecture on the show is quite spectacular, and we love walking through the tropical gardens here, which are flanked by ponds. The reflections in the ponds can really enhance your Instagram photos.

You are welcome to explore the buildings here, too, and it’s worth taking a look at the prayer halls, stupas and artwork on display in them.

Gitgit Waterfall

Gitgit Waterfall

This is a truly striking waterfall that cascades down from the cliff top above through a tiny space into the jungle below.

It’s not a long walk to get to the fall area, and if you can get down some stairs, you can easily enjoy this place.

It’s very popular, though, and it’s best to visit early in the morning when the crowds are still in bed dreaming of sheep.

Singsing Waterfall

Singsing Waterfall, Buleleng

This waterfall is something of a hidden treasure, and it’s about an hour’s drive from Lovina.

You need to join the path in a local village and then walk for about 20 minutes through the rainforest to get there.

That means you quite often get this waterfall all to yourself as many people are put off by the moderate hike involved.

Aling-Aling Waterfall

Aling-Aling Waterfall

This is a series of waterfalls in Bali, and it’s one of the best places for cliff jumping on the island.

It’s very easy to get to and only a short climb down some stairs when you arrive.

You do have to pay an increased fee to jump here, but it’s worth it as a local guide will ensure you jump and land safely.

Visit Singaraja

Singaraja is the biggest city in this part of Bali, and there are more than 100,000 people who call it home.

It has a young population and a pair of excellent universities that cater to their educational needs.

There are some basic malls, supermarkets, etc., for you to buy supplies. It also has plenty of temples, a former Royal Palace and more to enjoy.

Nugraha Lovina Seaview Resort & Spa

Nugraha Lovina Seaview Resort & Spa

The room service at this seaview resort is worth paying a premium for, and so is the view.

Where To Eat In Lovina?

Buda Bakery & Resto

There are some great places to eat in the area, too, and they include:

Buda Bakery & Resto  – if you want bread and Western treats, they’re produced fresh daily here.

Ikan Bakur Tanjung Alam  – an open-air restaurant making the best-grilled seafood in Bali.

Global Village Kafe  – all the staff here are people with disabilities, and they make amazing food.

Akar Cafe  – the best vegetarian place in North Bali.

Where To Drink In Lovina?

Funky Place Beach Bar & Grill

Lovina doesn’t have a ton of nightlife, but it does have some, including:

Funky Place Beach Bar & Grill  – this is a great place to sit on a beanbag and watch the sun go down on the beach. Drink cocktails, eat peanuts and have fun. Their food wasn’t the best we’ve had, but the vibe was great.

Poco Lounge Bar  – not far from the dolphin statue, this tropical-themed bar is very good fun. They have bands playing most evenings, and their pizzas are great. Drinks are sensibly priced, too.

ZiGiZ Bar  – live acoustic guitar performances here are awesome, and the cocktail list is huge.

Where To Shop In Lovina?

It’s fair to say that most people don’t make a trip to Lovina to go shopping, and while there are the usual beach vendors and places to pick up diving or snorkelling equipment, there’s not a lot to spend your money on here that you can’t get elsewhere in Bali for similar prices (or sometimes less).

However, there is one thing that they sell in Lovina that is truly local, and you can find them on:

Jalan Bina Ria  – Dolphin statues (please note: the vendors are not being entirely honest if they claim that they are made from ebony; they are carved from local wood, and you should pay for a carving, not a treasure).

Is It Worth Going To Lovina, Bali?

Yes! Lovina is a hidden gem, for now, and it’s the ideal location for those feeling a little burned out from the crowds and drama of much of the rest of Bali.

Of course, you should visit Canggu (come see us at FINNS Beach Club , the best beach club in the world, when you do), Seminyak, Kuta and Legian, they’re popular for good reasons, but sometimes, you just need a bit of a change of scene and that’s when Lovina comes in handy.

There’s no better place to get a real feel for the fishing village heritage of this coastline.

You also won’t get hassled by hawkers with every step you take, and of course, there are still salespeople in Lovina Beach, but far fewer than there at Kuta Beach.

What Is Lovina, Bali Known For?

The thing that Lovina Beach is most famous for is its dolphins.

Many tourists come to Lovina just for a dolphin tour, and once their dolphin tour is over, they’re already heading to pastures new with their photos of the dolphins filling their Instagram feeds.

We think that’s kind of sad, and as much as we love dolphins, we’d encourage visitors to explore the Lovina Beach area a little more fully. It’s a lovely place, and it’s worth a day or two on any Bali itinerary.

Can You Swim At Lovina Beach Bali?

Yes! It’s a beautiful beach for swimming, in fact. Sure, many will argue that it’s not the best beach in Bali for swimmers, but we think it’s more than good enough.

Swimming here is easy because there’s very little in the way of waves or surf, and it’s a nice beach for both swimming and snorkelling.

Once you’ve enjoyed the dolphin tours, you should definitely take some time to explore the marine environment of Lovina Beach, a little closer to shore.

Is Lovina Beach Good?

Yes! Lovina offers some of the best value accommodations, resorts, villas, and hotel rooms on the island. The town is relaxed, and the locals are very friendly towards travellers.

It’s easy to get cheap spa treatments, and the restaurants offer fresh catch from the ocean nearly every day of the year.

One of the most popular things in Lovina Town is going to see the dolphins, but the nice beach, rich cultural heritage, and the hot springs are all worth a visit too.

How To Book A Trip To Lovina, Bali

If you’ve decided that you want to visit Lovina in Bali. Then we recommend that you contact the brilliant folks at  the Bali Res Centre .

This is a locally owned, managed and operated travel agency with great connections across the island. They can ensure that your time in Lovina goes exactly the way you want it to.

The people at the Bali Res Centre get very competitive pricing thanks to being on the island and it makes you feel good to spend money in the Balinese economy rather than hand it to some offshore corporate entity.

Final Thoughts On Lovina, Bali

A trip to Lovina in North Bali is a great idea, particularly if you’ve spent a lot of time in South Bali and feel like a change of scene.

You can easily find some lovely accommodation in Central Lovina that won’t break the bank.

Lovina offers rice paddies, coral reefs, water sports, local music, traditional Balinese culture and heritage, diving and so much more!

Travellers seeking to explore the coast of this part of Indonesia will be rewarded with a relaxing and enjoyable time. Have fun!

The Best Things To Do In Lovina Beach, Bali

Last Updated on February 14, 2024 by Natalia

Lovina beach has become a popular destination in North Bali due to the area’s resident dolphins. Although Dolphin watching tours are seen as one of the best things to do in Lovina, unfortunately they aren’t actually as ethical as you might hope. Thankfully, the area still has plenty of other great things to do! While we’d recommend skipping the dolphin tours in Lovina, the area is still definitely worth a visit so be sure to check out our guide to the best places to stay in Lovina. Find out everything you need to know about the area with the best things to do in Lovina guide!

Make sure you have everything you need for your trip with our packing guide for Bali!

Table of Contents

How to get to Lovina Beach

Shuttle – It’s possible to get between most places in Bali by shuttle bus. You can either arrange this at one of the many travel agencies on the street, or book online in advance. Prices will vary depending on where you’re coming from, which agency you book with and your negotiation skills.

Perama Tours offer very reasonably priced shuttles. To get from Ubud or Kuta to Lovina it costs 250,000 IDR when booked through their website.

Click here to take a look at Perama Tours’ full schedule and to book your transport from a number of places in Bali to Lovina.

Taxi – Taxis are available to take you from anywhere in Bali to Lovina. We recommend finding a driver online local to the area that you’re staying, and then negotiating a price via Whatsapp.

Originally we were quoted 350,000 IDR for the one hour drive from Munduk to Lovina but after messaging a number of drivers we were able to negotiate it down to 220,000 IDR.

Drivers on the street will often quote higher prices, but if you just google taxi drivers in the area you’re staying they are generally more professional and willing to negotiate.

For more tips for your trip to Bali be sure to check out this guide!

Getting around Lovina Beach

Lovina itself is relatively small and so everything you need is within walking distance. For exploring the surrounding areas you’ll either want to rent a scooter or hire a taxi driver for the day. We paid 550,000 IDR for a full day trip to 5 waterfalls in the North of Bali with 007 transport Bali. Renting a scooter for a day should cost around 60,000 IDR.

Best time to visit Lovina Beach

Bali’s dry season runs from April to September, making this the best time to visit Lovina for good weather. The rainiest months are December, January and February, and the weather can be quite bad during this period. If you do visit at this time of year it means the waterfalls will be more powerful.

If you’re hoping to avoid crowds then don’t visit in July and August as this is the busiest time of year.

Best things to do in Lovina Beach

Waterfalls  .

Some of the best waterfalls in Bali are found in the north of the island, and can easily be visited on a day trip from Lovina.

Our favourite two waterfalls to see near Lovina were Sekumpul and Banyumala Twin waterfall!

Other waterfalls near to this part of Bali are Gitgit waterfall , Jembong waterfall and Aling Aling waterfall (which is covered in greater detail below!).

Hiring a driver for a day should cost around 550,000 IDR, although if you ask a driver on the street in Lovina they are likely to quote you a much higher price than this. We recommend finding a driver online and messaging them on Whatsapp to negotiate a price.

Visiting the waterfalls here was not just one of the best things we had done near Lovina but in Bali.

Sekumpul waterfall, a great thing to do in Lovina

Snorkelling/Diving

There are a number of dive operators in Lovina that run daily snorkelling and diving trips and is a great thing to do here. One of the best areas to snorkel and dive near Lovina is Menjangan island.

At Menjangan island there’s plenty of marine life to see – from lionfish to moray eels to reef sharks. If you’re lucky you may even see manta rays or whale sharks.

Before booking, we recommend checking whether an operator is affiliated with PADI. There have been reports of people being sold unlicensed trips in Lovina, and so it’s best to pay more to go with a legitimate operator.

Click here to check for PADI dive shops in Lovina.  Prices for diving and snorkelling will vary depending on the operator you go with.

Dolphin watching

One of the main things to do in Lovina, Bali, is a morning dolphin watching tour. Although these tours do represent a good chance to see dolphins in the wild, they aren’t run with the dolphins wellbeing in mind.

There are at least 20 boats a day all relentlessly chasing after dolphins for tourists’ enjoyment. Some days there are around 100 boats doing this.

We saw dolphins in Komodo and on our ferry crossing from Bali to Java, and in both instances there weren’t lots of boats chasing the dolphins. We strongly recommend not to do a dolphin watching tour in Lovina, for more information about the unethical practice we recommend reading this article.

Aling Aling trek

If you’re looking for some adventure in Bali, consider a visit to Aling Aling waterfall. There are a number of waterfalls in the area – many of which you can jump from into pools below. In fact, at Kroya waterfall it’s even possible to slide down the falls themselves, which is one of the more fun things to do in Lovina.

Aling Aling itself is the tallest waterfall in the area standing at around 35 metres. It’s not possible to swim in the Aling Aling waterfall as the water is considered holy.

Aling Aling is around a 40-minute drive from Lovina. If you want to swim and jump into the falls then a guide is mandatory. Entrance with a guide costs 150,000 IDR per person and requires a minimum of 2 people.

There is also the option of medium and longer treks at 300,000 IDR and 400,000 IDR per person respectively. Alternatively, entrance costs just 20,000 IDR per person if you’re happy to explore the falls on your own and don’t want to swim.

Kroya waterfall at Aling Aling, one of the things to do recommended in this Lovina guide

Where to eat in Lovina Beach

Warung Apple – A great option for a budget meal in Lovina. Warung Apple serves tasty Indonesian and Western dishes, with meals starting at around 20,000 IDR.

Global Village Kafe – A café making a positive difference in the world. Run as a not for profit, all proceeds go towards assisting in housing, healthcare and education for the disadvantaged and disabled in North Bali. Global Village Kafe offer both Indonesian and Western cuisine at very reasonable prices. Click here to see the menu.

The Bus to Lovina

It's a long journey however, very enjoyable , plenty of comfort stops. Al cold drink at the end a lift to accommodation.

Dear Ms Molly Thank you for your kind review. Your business means a lot to us, so if you ever have additional feedback, please don’t hesitate to reach out via email [email protected] Thank you

Needed to get from the ferry at Sanur to Ubud Con artist Taxi’s trying to charge stupid money. Had read that Perama does shuttle for 50k IDR one way to Ubud. Bought from shop. 15 minutes late and a short walk up the road from shop. Old bus. Did the job. Maybe 75 mins or so. Would take again. Would say they drop you off at their shop - about 1km downstreet from Ubud Market.

We took a two night two day tour that is part of a longer trip. Certainly we felt we had the best part of the trip as those that we were joining complained of rough seas, sea sickness and missing planned stops because of slow progress in rough seas. We joined the boat in the harbour for dinner. We were kept waiting a couple of hours at the office before joining the boat. We decided to see this as “boat time” and relax as best we could while standing on the narrow pavement with twenty others trying not to get in the way. Once on board the young assistants took good care of us and were friendly and helpful in explaining how things worked on the boat. Dinner was great and the “welcome party” hilarious. It felt a bit like a school disco to us (middle aged) folks and we loved the enthusiasm of our hosts. The trip continued in the same manner. We enjoyed the excursions and the kind concern of our “assistants” who seemed to be capable of having lots of fun without it inhibiting looking after the guests and of looking after the guests without it inhibiting them from having lots of fun. I really enjoyed the trip. I recommend that you pay careful attention to the planned itinerary to make sure that you join the trip for the part that you will most enjoy.

My friend and I booked the 2 Day/ 2 Night boat tour from Komodo (Labuan Bajo) to Lombok. The tour itself was great! We booked the deck class. The mattresses and sheets/pillows were sufficient and what we expected for the "backpacker" class. The first night you sleep out in the harbor so the boat can leave around 5 am to get out to Rinca Island by 8 am. We arrived a little late, we had booked dives and weren't able to meet at the official starting time but this wasn't an issue. The boat was still at the pier when we arrived and dinner was still available for us as well. The welcome party was pretty entertaining. The customers on the boat weren't all that into it but the crew and the staff from the office in town had a great time and were very entertaining, doing line dances and trying their hardest to get the rest of us on the dance floor. Sleeping was fine. Even the second night when you're traveling across open water, in our case wasn't rough (though we heard it can be), they lower plastic shades to block the wind which kept us from freezing on the deck. The stop in Rinca is optional. It's an additional fee and we had already done the dragon trekking on Komodo so we skipped it. The other snorkeling stops and the waterfall was good fun. There's a rope swing at the waterfall and you can jump off one of the platforms off the boat as well. Nothing felt rushed as there is ample time for the activities. The meals were pretty tasty - local Indonesian fare - and plenty of food. The bathrooms were the only downside, but it's to be expected on a boat. Everything is just always wet in these combined toilet/shower rooms. The only issue we had was when we arrived at the port in Lombok, they told us they couldn't drop us at our accommodation even after we had confirmed with both the office in Labuan Bajo and the crew on the boat that it shouldn't be an issue, Transportation to the west side of the island is included in the trip which is a 3 hour drive from the east side of the island. Our accommodation was a 10 minute drive from the harbor and therefore not included. There was a lot of arguing back and forth (some of the first "not nice" Indonesians I've come across) resulting in one of the staff charged us an additional 100,000 Rupiah to personally drive us to our accommodation. I thought is was a little unprofessional. Too bad this is how the trip ended.

I booked 3 tours with Perama: Bali Age Tour, Bali Nature and Culture tour and Twin lake Jungle trekking. I've experienced mutiple problems: - Even though it are big amounts of money, they cannot charge your creditcard. You have to pay cash or do a bank transfer (but in the Netherlands this costs a lot of money and is difficult because Indonesian Rupiah isn't on the list of the other valuta that you can pay); - I've chosen this organisation, because it would be a group tour and I didn't want a private driver. Perama explicitly said it would be. But all of the tours were still private... The drivers didn't know Perama and also said it's allways a private tour the do. So I thought that was strange and also very disappointing.. - Also, you only get a driver, so no guide. The drivers do speak English, but they cannot tell you anything about the things you're going to see and they also don't go in with you. Very disappointing also, because it looked like it included a guide and I saw other organisations with a guide going in; - About the Bali Age tour: Goa Gawah was closed because of a ceremony from 13-16 august. We were there on the 15th. The driver didn't know it was closed, so we drove there for nothing! I think it's very bad that a big organisation like Perama doesn't check before the confirmation of the booking whether it's possible to visit the locations on the intinerary! Very disappointing, because I booked the tour mostly for that temple... - Also, when we wanted to visit another temple instead, that was also very, very closeby, we couldn't. That's not on the intinerary, so we couldn't. So not flexble at all.. - Last but not least: when I emailed my complaints to Perama, I got a very arrogant e-mail that they couldn't help it, that I saw it wrong and there was nothing to do about it all. All by all very disappointing. For the daytours I would recommend a smaller organisation that works for its clients better.

We used perama for booking fast boats to gili islands and for transportation buses to different locations and they were fine. Their prices are usually set and printed so I think there is not much room for cheating. Some people use them for more adventure tours but I don't know about that. But for transportation they are good and affordable.

Lovina – Journey to North Bali

Still more to explore in Bali. This time I decided on a 5 day trip to North Bali, basing myself in Lovina, the quiet town known for black sand beaches and dolphin sightings.

Continuing my annual pilgrimage to Bali (after Canggu last year and a touch and go the year before), the elusive north seemed like a good region to explore. A good friend joined me this time and that made it easier to arrange for transport. (Jump to Lovina transport information)

Getting from Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasar) to Lovina

Perama Tour  offers bus services between Kuta and Lovina, leaving at 10am daily and arriving around 3pm, for 125,000IDR. However, our flight was arriving after 10am and as we wanted to get to Lovina on the same day, we started looking for drivers. Perama Tour offered a private car from airport to our accommodation in Lovina for 700,000 IDR so that formed our baseline – pretty sure we could do better than that. Here were the other drivers I contacted (based in North Bali):

Nyoman – Whatsapp: +62 823-3994-9871

Hendra – Whatsapp: +62 877-6293-1148

Agus – Whatsapp:  +65 818-0569-9660

I was quoted between 550,000 IDR and 650,000 IDR for the trip. We decided to go with Nyoman and were glad we did as his company made the long trip up north more interesting. But given the good reviews Hendra and Agus have I’m sure they’ll make good guides/drivers too! One thing to take note that it is usually expected for you to pay for the driver’s coffee/ meals along the way, if any.

I had originally wanted to drop by Jatiluwih on the way to Lovina but due to much heavier than expected traffic, and a heavy afternoon downpour, we gave it a miss. Instead, we made small stops along the way, for lunch and for coffee.

The ride from Denpasar to Lovina takes around 3 to 5 hours. We got stuck in a heavy jam not far from the airport, and when we finally got out of the jam it started to rain. Luck didn’t look like it was on our side for this trip. Fortunately, Nyoman kept us engaged with colourful stories of his culture, religion, and life in north Bali.

Coffee break on the way from Denpasar to Lovina

Late in the afternoon, we stopped at some sort of coffee stall/ mini plantation. Obviously this was catered for tourists travelling between north and south Bali. The coffee came from a plantation around Kintamani, but the company managed to get a small plot of land big enough to showcase the different crops and processes, and the highlight of all coffee in Bali, Kopi Luwak.

Civet cat droppings before processing.

Kopi Luwak is made from civet cat droppings. Civet cats are apparently able to pick out the best coffee beans, and the digestive process adds ‘magic’ to the coffee. The droppings are then processed and turned into one of the most expensive coffees available in the world. Other than the obscene price of the coffee, animal lovers may be taken aback by the caged civet cats on the plantation for tourists’ viewing pleasure.

Coffee and tea tasting.

At this coffee stop, a ‘guide’ will introduce you to various crops (including coffee), and a small demonstration of how coffee goes from its raw form to being ready for brewing. Then, you’d be able to try out a wide variety of teas and coffees for free, except for Kopi Luwak, which comes at 60,000 IDR for a cup. Finally, you’ll be brought to the shop where you can purchase any of the sampled teas or coffees. I think the prices at the shop are quite ridiculous, but I was happy to try out all the different teas as well as pay for a cup of Kopi Luwak, especially on that cold rainy day.

View from the 'plantation'.

Local life in North Bali

Beyond the coffee stop there was still a long winding way to go through the mountains. Nyoman, being our warm and friendly host to north Bali, asked if we’d like to join in some local activities at his village, not far from Lovina. We couldn’t give up on the opportunity.

Cockfighting

Definitely not for animal lovers. Even for us casual tourists it was quite a squirmy sight. It was interesting watching the proceedings before the fight, with bets being collected, people discussing the odds. But the fight itself was fast and furious. Blades tied to the cocks’ legs went slicing at stuff. ’nuff said. We were the only tourists there, and were glad to leave after a round. Hardcore gambling at cockfights is also a problem, as Nyoman explained.

The temple ceremony

Next, Nyoman brought us to the temple next to his house, where there was to be a ceremony that night. We were apprehensive at intruding upon locals’ ceremonies, but he told us his god would be happy with him bringing guests to the ceremony, so along we went.

A ceremony at a Hindu temple in north Bali.

Nyoman got us dressed in the traditional attire and we arrived at the temple to find it packed. There was chanting, blessings and offerings but we didn’t quite grasp what was going on. Nonetheless a very intriguing experience, and some of the temple goers were just as intrigued to see us.

The temple entrance.

Just outside the temple, there was a traditional performance of Wayang Kulit, a puppet/shadow play. I had read about it in primary school textbooks but never witnessed one before, so that was definitely eye opening too. The puppet master single-handedly provided all the visual and audio effects for the play. The show didn’t seem to garner much interest but the puppet master still put in lots of effort and completed the show which seemed over an hour long.

Local fruit with locals

After the ceremony ended, Nyoman brought us back to his house where his family shared durian and soursop with us. Simple, amazing pleasures in life. We couldn’t have asked for a warmer welcome to north Bali.

Soursop and durians.

Summer Guesthouse

For our stay in Lovina we stayed at Summer Guesthouse . It wasn’t one of those on the beaches but had loads of chill vibes. Rooms were clean and staff friendly. We can’t really complain about the breakfast views over rice fields and across the mountains too.

Some fruit for breakfast.

The staff made sure all our needs were attended too, while not being overwhelming. In summary a chill, clean and friendly place. But not quite the place to find a party crowd or to wake up to beach views. The beach is probably 5 to 10min away by walking. Another possible downside, if it is of concern, is the dark dirt track you’d have to take to get from the main road to the guesthouse (maybe 100m). A little intimidating at night.

Lovina Beach

The day after arrival, we explored next door Singaraja , before coming back to Lovina in the afternoon to check out the beach areas. Compared to Canggu , Lovina Beach was way quieter, perfect for escaping the crowds.

Plenty of bars line the road to Lovina beach.

While Lovina beach offers neither waves to surf on (the sea is incredibly calm) nor white sandy beaches, it’s a great place to get a balance of quiet and convenience. Luxury resorts can be found on either side of the beach.

Almost empty. Lovina Beach.

The wooden pier is a nice place to hang out or take those Insta worthy photos. The fancier spots were taken by girls trying out every possible pose perfecting that shot so here’s one of a less popular spot on the pier.

Wooden pier at Lovina Beach.

On the beach, a group of locals started playing music with their instruments, and tourists joined in for some good fun.

Music and fun.

After passing more unique beach accommodations along that stretch, we turned back in to the main road. On the way back to the guesthouse we got some fruits from a roadside stall, around 20,000 IDR for the durian and another 20,000 IDR for the mangosteen. I think these would not be considered cheap by local standards, but it isn’t that much. And so we spent the rest of the lazy afternoon by the poolside enjoying some fresh fruits. Not too bad for the 40/50,000 IDR spent.

Eating out at Lovina

Lovina has a good number of food options for a quiet town, many along the main road or the parallel one closer to the beach.

Food truck near the dolphin statue on Lovina beach.

From near the dolphin statue a road branches out parallel to the main road, to the east, eventually linking back to the main road. There are plenty of restaurants along this stretch serving a variety of cuisines. Don’t expect anything too authentic or amazing here, but as the rest of Lovina offers, plenty of chill, easy vibes. We tried out a couple of warungs around the middle of this stretch. Around 30,000-50,000 for Indonesian food and more for western cuisines.

Night marketish place along the main road.

Back out on the main road, nearer the eastern end of Lovina and where the side beach road joins the main road, there are some stalls set up. Most seem very quiet but there are a few which are more crowded with locals. We didn’t try here but it seems to offer some nice local food.

Map of Bali.

And that was our 2nd day in north Bali. We spent the 3rd and 4th day exploring the further sights with Nyoman (more on those soon). At the end of our 4th day we made a stop at Krisna for some souvenirs.

Souvenir shopping at Krisna

Krisna is a souvenir chain in Bali. The branch at Lovina is a bit of a distance from the town center, but was huge and had a wide range. We got some snacks and coffee here. Prices were not that bad as one would expect from a tourist oriented place like this, and definitely better than at the coffee stop on the first day.

Krisna, Lovina.

Dolphin watching at Lovina

On our last day there was one last thing to check off the list before we were to leave Lovina. Summer Guesthouse helped us to arrange for the early morning dolphin watching tour (100,000 IDR), a staple of every tourist’s itinerary to Lovina. You accommodation and the random sales person in Lovina will offer it to you at that price too. Our guide for the tour, Sude, picked us up around 6am in the morning and soon our party of 5 was out at sea.

Beautiful skies in the morning at Lovina.

I’m not quite the morning person, but the beautiful changing hues of the morning sky were mesmerising and made me forgot how early it was. Not that it was really early. But I’m really not an early person.

The sun rising over the mountains of Bali.

More and more boats were out at sea. All was calm. Without warning, Sude cranked up the engine, and the boats nearby followed suit. They were all headed in the same direction but the dolphins were nowhere to be seen. Suddenly, the first of the dolphins breached the water, and the tourists cheered. More dolphins followed, surfacing every few seconds while heading in the same direction. After about half a minute the first one leaped in the air. Again, the rest followed. Then, silence as they disappeared underwater again.

Dolphin!

This repeated for a few more times through the hour. You can tell the more experienced captains from the less experienced ones by seeing which are the boats leading the way towards each sighting and which are boats following the crowd. The dolphins do not seem bothered by the boats but occasionally some boats appear to get too close to the dolphins.

More dolphins!

I caught most of the action on video so there aren’t many photographs to show, maybe a video of them in future. It was a magical experience seeing so many wild dolphins in their natural habitat. The photos above show a small number but in truth there were more (the largest group we saw was probably around 10-20).

Environmental impact?

The crowd that had gathered.

There is some debate over the environmental impact of the dolphin watching tours, as the engines may disturb the dolphins. Considering the alternative scenarios if such dolphin watching tours were not allowed, though, I think it such activities may encourage local communities and tourists to treasure the natural environment more. Provided the boats do not get too close to the dolphins, I guess.

Dolphin watching extras – coral reef watching

Sude offered a detour to coral reefs nearby for another 50,000 IDR per person but the 4 of us on the boat (my friend and I, and another 2 tourists) decided not to do it so we headed back to shore.

Back at shore.

Sude is also a driver and does tours too in the afternoon. He is a friendly guy, not as extroverted as Nyoman so if you prefer a quieter ride around north Bali you can look for him at 081 337 045 070.

End of our North Bali adventures

And that completed our 5 day north Bali tour. Back at the guesthouse we had breakfast before our bus (more of a minivan) picked us up at 9 and got us to the airport. Traffic was much smoother that day and we ended up arriving much earlier than expected. But all was good as we readied ourselves for work again the next day.

The bus service was straightforward enough, and affordable, but not that comfortable.

Can you please share some contacts for rental. You might have missed this infi.

Please do also let us know if it is easy to find private cars around aur port.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Rakesh! Unfortunately I did not save the contact for the rental. For hiring of car and driver in Bali, the price depends on which area you are visiting. If the driver lives in the same area it will be significantly cheaper than if you hire a driver from a different area, as Bali is pretty big. You can try looking up on TripAdvisor for some recommendations. I think it’s a good idea to contact a few drivers via a chat app like Whatsapp, find a driver that you’re comfortable with and you’re fine with the price, then arrange for pick up at airport. Have a good trip!

Interesting read. Very clear description.

What are the Bus Classes & Prices of Perama Tour?

The price of your bus trip will depend both on the destination and the class of your ticket. Note that not all ticket classes are available on certain routes yet for longer trips there is almost always a good choice of options. Opt for a sleeper coach for the most convenient overnight trip. Sleeper buses are usually equipped with berths or soft reclining seats, feature an onboard toilet and your ticket may also include other perks like snacks or even a lunch. Taking a night bus is also a good idea if you want to save on your hotel room. During the day an express service is often the best value for money as it makes less stops than an ordinary or standard class bus and travels faster. On some routes it may be crucial to choose the right class as, say, an ordinary or second class bus may need some 6 hours to cover the distance the first class or express bus travels in two hours!

Pros & Cons of Bus Travel

Pros of bus travel.

Buses usually boast the widest network of destinations covered. They travel to the places you cannot get to by plane or even by train

Travelling by bus is easy – there is no need to arrive to the bus terminal much in advance, and the check-in is usually a very fast formality opposite to air travel

Bus tickets are very affordable. Yes, there are costly first class or VIP options but is you are on a budget, bus is the first means of transportation you have to think about

At the same time, there are different classes of service to suit any budget. If you are after a higher level of comfort, buses get you covered, too.

Cons of Bus Travel

Intercity bus terminals can be located outside the city centre in the outskirts. It means you will need to calculate extra time and money to get there. In certain destinations getting from the bus terminal can cost you more than you would expect because only a limited number of transportation companies is allowed to serve the route – and prices may be inflated.

During busy weekends or high season buses serving some tourist destinations may run out of schedule and require advanced booking.

While buses are not as weather dependent as ferries, bus trips can also be delayed or cancelled due to bad weather or road conditions – keep it in mind if travelling during certain seasons or to certain destinations.

Lovina is a quiet coastal town on the North Bali coastline 5 km west of the city of Singaraja . The main street, Jalan Raya Singaraja , which crosses the town parallel to the coast, is noisy and congested. It has sidewalks to walk on, but as in many other parts of Bali, they are not well maintained.

Understand [ edit ]

perama tour lovina

The name "Lovina" was coined in the 1950s by a local Buleleng Regency official with a good eye for future tourism-based development. It consists of seven traditional villages, which all merge into one on a 10-km stretch of the main road which hugs the north coast to the west of Singaraja: Temukus, Kalibukbuk, Anturan, Pemaron, Tukad Mungga, Banyualit and Kaliasem. Kalibukuk is the main hub of this area and is often thought of as the "Lovina town centre".

The whole stretch of coast here is fringed by narrow black sand beaches, which are accessed by a multitude of small lanes which run perpendicular to the east-west coast road. The beaches are generally safe for swimming, and the waters of Bali's north coast, in direct contrast to the crashing surf of the south, are relatively calm.

Diving, snorkelling and dolphin watching are the main activities, but perhaps above all else, this is an area in which to relax and take in a very slow, traditional pace of life. It can get a little crowded in July and August. Outside that peak season, this is a quiet part of the island. Locals and tourists gather nightly on the main pier to watch the sun set.

Lovina also has a large number of cafés, bars, and music clubs, most of them next to the beach. Both live and recorded or DJ'd music are popular.

By bus [ edit ]

Perama offers transportation from major tourist destinations in Bali and has a local Lovina office in Anturan. Perama shuttle buses to Lovina leave from Kuta , Sanur , Ubud , Candidasa and Padang Bai . They use mini buses without air-conditioning and the prices are more than reasonable.

A Menggala bus departs Singaraja every day at 19:00 to Surabaya (Java) and stops in Lovina. Apr 2018 price Rp 190,000 one way.

By bemo [ edit ]

Long distance bemos are a bit of challenge, but the most experienced of budget traveller. It is always possible to get to Lovina from most major towns in Bali, almost always via Singaraja .

By car [ edit ]

Most visitors arrive in Lovina from the south in a self-drive hire car or with a car and driver. A journey from Kuta takes about 3 hours and from Sanur slightly less. Ubud is a 2-hour car journey over the central highland range. Many visitors from the south choose though to break their journey at Bedugul or Kintamani .

By taxi [ edit ]

A pre-paid coupon taxi direct from the airport will cost you Rp 450,000 and takes about 3 hours.

Get around [ edit ]

This is a good area for walking as the roads are relatively quiet and the beaches long and easily passable.

Renting a bicycle is popular and again, easy to find. Many hotels have their own. You should be aware though that away from the coast road, there are a lot of steep hills.

The easiest way to visit the surroundings of Lovina is by renting a motorbike. There are many roadside outlets and expect to pay Rp 50,000-90,000 per day. The roads are quite good here and nothing like as crowded as in south Bali.

Local bemos ply the north coast road between Singaraja and West Bali , stopping at all points on the Lovina stretch. You will need some patience and they can be very crowded indeed. As there is only one main road it is hard to get lost. The normal price is Rp 5,000 (Apr 2008) one way.

See [ edit ]

Lovina’s black sand beaches are quite lovely and lend themselves well to exploration on foot at a leisurely pace. The sea is very calm here and is safe for swimming. The feeling on the beaches is one of laid-back tranquility with small, colourfully decorated traditional outriggers called perahu dotted along the shoreline. These are a reminder that you are in a traditional fishing community. There are a few hawkers, but nothing like as many as on the southern beaches, and this is as good a place as any in Bali to explore quiet beaches at your own pace. At the highest of tides the beaches can get a little difficult to traverse in places, so it is best to time your walks for a falling tide. Be aware that many of the 'black sand' beaches (particularly in the central area) are an unappealing dirty brown with significant amounts of plastic rubbish

The small road that runs down to the beach-front from the main east-west coast route at Kalibukuk is called Jalan Bina Ria. At the beach end of this road is a dolphin statue (complete with one-jawed rusting dolphins). Apart from being a notable piece of kitsch, this is a reminder of the reason for the initial drive behind tourist development at Lovina (dolphins, obviously). Mini wooden and stone replicas of this statue are for sale widely in the area.

Your hotel can (and will repeatedly) offer day tours to the nearby sights including the beautiful highland scenery of Munduk to the south, the beaches of Pemuteran to the west, and the city of Singaraja to the east. All are within easy reach.

You can arrange a half day trip to the Les Village waterfall, bat cave and coral protection project, 40 km to the east.

You will be offered dolphin sighting trips every other minute. These leave the main beaches each morning at dawn, and have mixed reviews as the boats tend to outnumber the dolphins. It can though still be an enjoyable ride, and if you do find a pod of dolphins it is of course very worthwhile. The price is fixed by the local boatmen's association, and is Rp 60,000 per person. If you are in a group, ask about chartering your own private boat.

Cockfights are popular around Lovina, perhaps more so than anywhere else in Bali. This is taken very seriously, and you will see many older men training the cocks at the roadside throughout the area. At the fights, huge sums of money change hands as illegal gambling on the outcome is rife. Given the cruelty, and deaths of the birds, think twice about attending.

There are several dive operators based out of Lovina that operate daily dive and snorkeling trips to Menjangan Island , Tulamben and Amed , as well as dives from the local beaches. Spas [ edit ]

Lovina has several spa facilities. While they are more low key than the spas in south Bali, the service is excellent and the prices are much lower than in the south. Do not under-rate or overlook the traditional massage women who work on the beaches at Lovina. Most of these women come from families where massage skills have been passed down through many generations, and they really know what they are doing. A beach massage will also cost you less.

Buy [ edit ]

perama tour lovina

Kalibukuk has a number of shops both on the main coast road and on Jalan Bina Ria selling the usual selection of Bali goods. You will find everything from arts and crafts to T-shirts at prices very marginally higher than you would pay in south Bali.

A Lovina speciality though are dolphin statues, usually carved from wood (don't believe those trying to convince they are from ebony!). This is due to the strong association of Lovina with dolphins, and if you want to take home just one souvenir from Lovina, then this is the most appropriate.

The telephone area code for Lovina is 0362.

Internet [ edit ]
