Peter is the first artist in the world to perform a monthly residency at The O2, the world’s most popular music, leisure and entertainment venue.

Peter Kay said: “Audiences in London have always been amongst the best in Britain, plus I think seeing the show could be part of a nice weekend away treat.”

“It’s good to get back to what I love doing best, stand-up comedy and if there’s ever a time people need a laugh it’s now. And with the cost of living at an all-time high, ticket prices are starting from £35. The same price they were on my previous tour in 2010.”

Peter Kay tour: O2 Priority website crashes due to 'extraordinary' demand for tickets

Comedian Peter Kay has broken the internet after announcing his first tour in 12 years, when he will become the first artist in the world to perform a monthly residence at London's O2 Arena.

Comedian and actor Peter Kay

O2 have apologised after their Priority ticket website offering customers early access to Peter Kay tickets crashed due to "extraordinary demand".

The rush for tickets followed the announcement that the comedian would be returning to the stage after years away from the spotlight.

London's O2 Arena announced that the 49-year-old Phoenix Night's star would become the first artist in the world to perform a monthly residency there, as part of his first tour in 12 years.

The mobile phone company shared news of their priority tickets on social media at the weekend, writing: "Peter Kay is back on tour. This is not a drill."

However, messages on Twitter on Thursday pleaded with customers to be patient after the site crashed, leaving customers unable to apply for tickets.

O2 wrote: "We're seeing extraordinary demand for Peter Kay. We know customers are struggling to get on to our Priority website and app before 10am, we're working on it. Please be patient, thank you."

Later, calling the demand "unprecedented", O2 told customers: "This is by far the highest demand we've ever seen for Priority Tickets in 15 years". Beyonce was the previous most popular performer through O2's Priority ticket scheme.

Fans of the star shared their irritation at being unable to access tickets, posting memes, pictures and comments on social media.

One fan wrote: "Would have better luck breaking into Peter Kay's house, holding him hostage and demanding a private stand-up gig than getting tickets through O2 this morning".

While another added: "Wish they would have given priority to people who originally had tickets for the cancelled Peter Kay tour. The struggle is real."

Others shared the holding message and image that came up on their screen when attempting to register for tickets.

Kay's last planned 14-month tour was cancelled at short notice in 2017 due to "unforeseen family circumstances"

Despite the public outcry, the mobile phone company insisted that tickets were being sold, writing in a Twitter update: "We are seeing lots of Priority Tickets being sold for Peter Kay to O2 and Virgin Media customers right across the UK".

While Kay had made a point of keeping his ticket prices low amid the cost-of-living crisis - selling them at the same price as his 2010 tour and starting from £35 - tickets for some of his shows have already appeared on resale sites at inflated prices - further infuriating fans.

Kay will perform a show a month at the O2 from December 2022 to November 2023, as well as dates in cities including Liverpool, Dublin, Nottingham and Newcastle.

The arena gigs will make up Kay's first live tour since 2010, when he broke the Guinness World Record for the biggest-selling run of all time, performing to more than 1.2 million people.

Tickets go on general sale from 12 November.

Sky News has contacted O2 and representatives for Peter Kay for comment.

What has Peter Kay said?

Kay’s comeback was announced during an ad break in the series launch of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! on ITV.

Following the announcement, Kay’s official website appeared to crash briefly under increased traffic.

A poster for the event featured Kay holding a sign reading, “Better late than never” and described a ticket to his shows as an “ideal Christmas gift”.

Kay, from Bolton, has been largely out of the spotlight in recent years.

He returned to the stage in August 2021 for two special charity events to raise money for Laura Nuttall, a then 20-year-old with an aggressive type of brain cancer called glioblastoma multiforme.

There was also a brief return in January 2021 when he appeared on BBC Radio 2 to chat to Cat Deeley – who was filling in after Graham Norton left the station – about his love of music, mixtapes and the musical Mamma Mia.

He also made a surprise appearance at a charity screening of his series Car Share in 2018.

Peter Kay at the O2 Arena review: delivered in spades

peter kay tour 02 priority

Sub-zero temperatures and rail strikes were never going to keep Peter Kay ’s fans away from the 02 Arena. They had anticipated his appearance for five years, when his last tour was cancelled for private reasons. So was the Better Late Than Never show worth the wait ? It was touch and go but eventually it delivered in spades.

Kay has lost some weight, but has hardly reinvented himself for his epic tour, which includes groundbreaking monthly gigs here until 2025. His material still trades heavily on shameless nostalgia. The bulk of his audience looked well over 30 and you might need to be almost twice that age to recognise some of his references.

But there were plenty who clearly did as the first half moved quickly from Christmas Cracker one liners – “karajoke” – to a TV advert singalong. If Kay hasn’t arranged a sponsorship deal or at least substantial free samples of Club biscuits, Mars bars or Fairy Liquid he is missing a trick.

And naturally there were his catchphrases. He can no longer buy garlic bread in Morrisons, he said, because asking for it makes everyone laugh. He claimed that he only appeared in a Doctor Who episode so that he could make a joke about “Dalek Bread”.

Elsewhere he compared the past to the present. Blockbuster Video to Netflix, chunky mail order catalogues to Amazon. No book token prizes for guessing which ones he prefers.

One change to Kay was that even he now talks about his mental health, albeit lightly. He explained that his OCD means he has to eat every baked bean in the can and puts tape around hotel door frames so keep light out. The latter led into a stand-out anecdote about a family trip to New York dominated by a search for an English cuppa.

Now that Kay is 49 and genuinely middle aged rather than prematurely middle aged there was the inevitable routine about intimate medical examinations. His account of being treated for kidney stones had the entire male contingent laughing and wincing simultaneously. My legs remained firmly crossed throughout.

A vein of sentimentality ran through the show too, most notably when he talked about his late grandmother. Kay took a break from the relatable quips to play a recording of their conversation about her funeral plans while a montage upped mushiness levels to new heights.

And then suddenly he was gone, before returning and asking everyone to keep his spectacular encore secret. Let’s just say it was not strictly comedy but as it shovelled surprise on surprise it certainly put smiles on everyone’s faces.

Next show January 21, then one monthly until April 2025; theo2.co.uk

Fans hoping to get tickets to Peter Kay’s first stand-up tour in 12 years were left dealing with chaos after the O2 Priority website and app crashed.

Priority tickets for the highly-anticipated tour, which will see the comedian become the first person to perform a monthly residency at London’s O2 Arena , were due to go on sale at 10am on Thursday – only fans couldn’t access them due to the technical issues.

O2 shared a statement saying the ticket sale caused the highest demand for Priority Tickets in 15 years.

Their first statement said: ‘We’re seeing extraordinary demand for Peter Kay. We know customers are struggling to get on to our Priority website and app before 10am, we’re working on it. Please be patient, thank you.’

They updated fans a few minutes later, adding: ‘We’re seeing unprecedented demand for Peter Kay tickets & we know a lot of you can’t access Priority. Sorry, we’re working on it. Please be patient; this is by far the highest demand we’ve ever seen for Priority Tickets in 15 years. The presale lasts for 48h so keep checking.’

One fan wrote on Twitter: ‘How am I supposed to get my priority tickets for Peter Kay when the O2 priority app is down.’

‘The comfort of checking twitter and realising the entire O2 priority website has crashed for peter kay tickets,’ another said.

One more added: ‘I think Peter Kay has crashed 02 priority I cannot get on to my app this morning! @O2 sort it out!’ while another said: ‘How many people are frantically refreshing @O2 priority page… can’t just be me?’

Tickets go on general sale on Saturday November 12 at 10am.

The comedian will be the first artist to play a month’s residency at the O2 arena, after he announced his epic comeback after 12 years.

He said of the announcement on Zoe Ball’s Radio 2 show: ‘Of course I’m not going to not do London . All I can say is yes I am.’

The comedian, who has remained largely out of the limelight over recent years – will embark on his first live tour since 2010, starting this December.

And, with plenty of people up and down the country struggling financially at the moment, the northern comic is keen to keep  ticket  prices as low as he can.

‘It’s good to get back to what I love doing best, stand-up comedy and if there’s ever a time people need a laugh it’s now,’ the funnyman said.

‘And with the  cost of living  at an all-time high, ticket prices are starting from £35. The same price they were on my previous tour in 2010.’

Peter will begin his tour on December 2 at the Manchester AO Arena before his residency at the O2, and will visit locations including  Birmingham , Liverpool and Dublin, ending in August 2023 at the Sheffield Utilita Arena.

Peter Kay

The 49-year-old  took a break from the limelight  in 2017 and cancelled his nationwide tour, citing family circumstances as the reason at the time.

He has since started slowly returning to public life with various surprise performances and charity events,  recently delighting fans at the Dance For Life show in Liverpool  for Cancer Research in August.

Then, he began gearing up to return to the stage properly by  testing new material on fans  at a series of surprise gigs around the country.

When cancelling his 100-date sell-out tour four years ago, Peter released a statement reading: ‘Due to unforeseen family circumstances I deeply regret I am having to cancel all of my upcoming work projects. My sincerest apologies.

‘This decision has not been taken lightly and I’m sure you’ll understand my family must always come first.’

Peter kay, o2 arena review - comeback show is worth the wait, nostalgia-fest delivers an emotional punch.

peter kay tour 02 priority

In 2017, Bolton comic Peter Kay had to cancel his planned tour because of “family circumstances”. But then, when he announced last year that he was back in the saddle, the tickets for Better Late Than Never sold like the proverbial. Well into what has mushroomed into a mega tour continuing until 2025, I caught him at the O2 Arena.

While it's good to have him back, much of the first half could have been written for any of Kay's previous tours since he was nominated for best show in the 1998 Perrier Awards (now the Edinburgh Comedy Awards) as he riffs on one of his mainstays, advertising jingles from his youth. At one point he even leads the audience into a singalong of them.

His material moves to firmer, although no less nostalgic, territory as he recalls jobs from his youth, working at a video rental shop and at a Top Rank bingo hall (younger fans may need to do online searches). There's a decent riff on his unintentional catchphrase “Garlic bread!” and how he now can't pop down to the supermarket to buy it, and he references his appearance on Doctor Who (he says he did it just so that he could make a joke about “Dalek bread”, which I hope is true).

Much has happened to a very slimmed-down Kay since he was last on tour – as it has to much of the population, of course – but threading through the show are his more reflective view of life and mentions of his beloved 96-year-old Nan, who died last year. We hear about some of her malapropisms and later a conversation between them as a family slide show appears on the onstage screen. There's a very funny section, too, on his recent brush with ill health as he has had kidney stones and needed an operation, the experience not made any easier by the anaesthetist asking for a selfie.

And, always a crowd-pleaser, Kay does a lengthy section of his party piece – misheard song lyrics, using his trusty old Walkman just to underline the nostalgia-fest we're experiencing.

Then, just as the evening appears to be winding down, Kay delivers an astonishing coup de theatre, expertly drawing all the seemingly unconnected threads into a hilariously bombastic finale full of colour and spectacle.

The audience are asked to keep the secret for those coming to later dates, and I hope they do because the sheer theatrically of it grabs not just one's attention, but one's emotions too. Kay proves that under that everyman exterior there beats the heart of a showman.

Peter Kay on stage

Peter Kay review – from tried and tested everyman routine to jaw-dropping pageant

Manchester Arena After 12 years away from the stage, the slimmed-down entertainer is more unapologetically nostalgic than ever

N o hotcake ever sold in greater quantity than tickets for Peter Kay’s new tour : at one stage in my own bid for access, I was numbered 450,000 in the online queue. It’s a fair bet, then, that Kay will break the record he himself set in 2010 for the biggest-selling standup tour of all time – 1.2 million people saw that show. But is all the fuss justified? And will the long wait for this new show, fraught with speculation about Kay’s health and the likelihood of him ever touring again, prove worthwhile?

If there was any doubt, it was dispelled the moment the slimmed-down 49-year-old stepped onstage at the Manchester Arena. The reception was long, loud and, for Kay, tear-jerking. He took a pause to settle himself: “How’m I supposed to do bloody comedy now?” Not much doubt, though, how Kay was going to do comedy. The two-hour show scarcely deviated from the everyman formula that has made him such a popular success. Some of it, indeed, was almost parodically formulaic, as the Bolton man riffed on modern technology (“What did we do before Amazon? Catalogues!”), led a singalong of 1970s advertising jingles, and gave his famous “garlic bread” routine an Italian makeover.

But for all that, it didn’t come across as just another Peter Kay show. It has a more reflective air: the first half found Kay reminiscing on the dead-end jobs he worked before he was famous, including a stint as an usher in this very arena. The show’s other theme is the recent death of his 96-year-old nan, a big presence in Kay’s life. Earlier, that manifested as some first-base gags about gran’s malapropisms. Later, it prompted a sentimental finale, as a conversation grandson had with granny at the end of her life is replayed over a family-album slideshow.

Elsewhere, while the set never directly addresses the reasons for Kay’s temporary disappearance from public life, there is a section on his recent health challenges. In comic terms, it’s the strongest part of the show, as Kay rolls his eyes at the anaesthetist asking for a selfie, then recounts the indignities of his recent operation for kidney stones. It’s familiar standup territory, but Kay’s got a minimalist gift for expressing indignity and dismay – and there’s a great acting-out of a genitally entangled couple making their way to hospital after an unfortunate post-op accident.

Fans with Peter Kay lines on T-shirts

While this routine is fit to stand alongside well-loved favourites from Kay’s earlier shows, some of the material in the first act barely registers as comedy. When our host orchestrates the audience in a TV theme recital, say, or goes all misty-eyed at one chocolate-bar jingle after another, his role is more conduit for our collective memory than comedian. You look in vain for punchlines – at least until the show’s multiple encores, when those early sections are revisited and built upon in quite spectacular fashion.

It would be unsporting to say too much about the jaw-dropping pageant that Kay lays on here, after the comedy show proper has come to an end. In keeping with the evening’s reflective vibe, there’s a section on misunderstood song lyrics, calling back to one of Kay’s most popular routines – and as funny as ever, because Kay takes so much pleasure in sharing with us these daft misapprehensions. After that, things get wilder, as all those TV themes and jingles return with bells and whistles added – and celebrity cameos, and hot air balloons, and our host dressed like Sergeant Pepper, living out his rockstar dreams.

By the end of Kay’s return to the stage after 12 years away, you can’t help but submit, not just to the spectacle, but to Kay’s commitment to celebrating his generational experience. Top Cat, the Bodyform advert, Blockbuster video: Kay doesn’t just joke about these Proustian madeleines of our shared youth – he fashions his whole show into a hymn to them. One can only imagine what anyone under 30 would think. But for Kay’s fans, it’s catnip. He returns to the stage older, as unapologetically traditional and even more nostalgic than ever, and delivers a show that’s pretty much irresistible.
