Use the App Store to conveniently download and install Safari extensions. All extensions in the App Store are reviewed, signed and hosted by Apple for your security, and they’re automatically kept up to date.

Start by installing the latest macOS updates You need Safari 12 or later to get Safari extensions from the App Store.

Open Safari and choose Safari > Safari Extensions from the menu bar.

The App Store opens to the Safari Extensions page. To download and install an extension, click Get or click the price. You may be asked to sign in with your Apple ID.

Powered by the Nitro JavaScript engine, Apple said Safari 5 on the Mac runs JavaScript 30 percent faster than Safari 4, three percent faster than Chrome 5.0, and over twice as fast as Firefox 3.6. Safari 5 loads new pages faster using Domain Name System (DNS) prefetching, and improves the caching of previously viewed pages to return to them more quickly.

Safari 5 adds more than a dozen powerful HTML5 features that allow web developers to create media-rich experiences, including full screen playback and closed captions for HTML5 video. Other new HTML5 features in Safari 5 include HTML5 Geolocation, HTML5 sectioning elements, HTML5 draggable attribute, HTML5 forms validation, HTML5 Ruby, HTML5 AJAX History, EventSource and WebSocket.

The new, free Safari Developer Program allows developers to customize and enhance Safari 5 with extensions based on standard web technologies like HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. The Extension Builder, new in Safari 5, simplifies the development, installation and packaging of extensions. For enhanced security and stability, Safari Extensions are sandboxed, signed with a digital certificate from Apple and run solely in the browser.

The details match a support document published over the weekend that suggested the release of Safari 5 for Mac and Windows was imminent.

When HTML5 videos played in Safari, right clicking offers a choice to download the video. The option seems to be gone in Sierra. Any idea how to get this back?

I'm guessing that you previously had an extension installed that enabled you to download videos, and that after upgrading, the extension is gone. You'll have to figure out which one it was, and re-download and re-install it. But be careful! I believe that before installing it, you -might- have to disable System Integrity Protection To do that, you need to 1. Reboot to recovery partition 2. Open Terminal 3. Enter this command: "csrutil disable" (you'll need to write it down, no quotes, and that's a space character between the two words) 4. Reboot once again. Once installed, you can re-enable SIP by repeating the above instructions, and this time use: "csrutil enable" Final thought: I've pretty much given up on Safari for downloading video. If I want to download (from YouTube, etc.), I use Opera or Firefox. Apple seems to be trying to discourage such extensions with Safari lately.

"It wasn’t an extension though. Videos that played natively (I think perhaps using quicktime container within Safari or something) used to have an option to download the video when I right clicked on it." Ah, yes. Seems to me that years ago, Safari DID once have the ability to download a video or audio file. BUT... that capability has long since been removed in more recent versions. I'm sure it was done so intentionally by Apple to make it more difficult to do such things. There are fewer extensions than ever that seem to work with the latest versions of Safari for video downloads. You might try: - Click to plugin - Fastest tube .. but no promises that even these will work any more. Really, if you're into video downloading, it might be easier to use a browser -other than- Safari for such things, such as Firefox or Opera. I've resigned myself to that. I've been using Opera with the "YouTube Downloader Lite" extension, works quite well. Not sure about extensions for other sites...

Didn't work.

Tried converting videos and it just didn't work at all. Just kept flashing up that it was processing over and over again, but nothing ever happened. Support was not customer focused at all. They only responded back if I pestered them and gave no solution to the issue I have with the software. Spend your money elsewhere, you'll be happy you did.

VERY Limited

This app is only good if you are going to play one video at a time. There is no option to begin playing your videos in your playlist and letting them all play without having to select each individual video and clicking play. Not what I was looking for. Wasted $40 on this.

This App is a complete rip-off! I want my money back now!!!!!

App opens fine. HOWEVER… once you try to drag-n-drop any video file to the app for conversion it crashes immediately. This app doesn’t deserve a star. It’s literally a scam.

After downloading a file, it's not always easy to find where it saved. Here's how to find and manage Safari downloads on your Mac.

While browsing the web in Safari, it’s common to need to download files from different websites. But sometimes it can be a challenge to find where these Safari downloads are saved.

Below are several ways to find and manage Safari downloads on your Mac.

How to Download Files Using Safari

There are different ways to save items from Safari to your Mac , depending on the type of item you want to save. While some items in webpages can’t be downloaded, files, images, software, and apps often come with a dedicated download button. Otherwise, Control-click or two-finger tap an item to save or download it.

It’s best not to download software or apps if they aren’t from a trusted source.

Where to Find Safari Downloads on a Mac

Unless you’ve chosen otherwise, items that you’ve downloaded from Safari automatically go to your Downloads folder. To find this, open Finder and click Downloads from the sidebar or press Cmd + Option + L .

You can change where your downloaded files save, if you want:

Head to Safari > Preferences .
Click the General tab. Go to File download location , then choose from the popup. Select Ask for each download if you want to be in more control of each download.

As we already mentioned, you can also find your Safari downloads using Finder. This is a valuable utility to locate items on our Mac. Simply click the magnifying button on your menu bar and type "downloads," or go to your Dock and click Finder to open the Finder window.

How to Manage Your Safari Downloads

There are several ways to manage your in-progress or completed downloads in Safari. To perform these actions, open the Downloads menu in Safari itself. Here’s what you can do:

Pause Downloads: If you’re currently downloading, click the stop button beside the file name to pause the download, then click the resume button to resume it again.
Remove a downloaded item: If you want to remove a single item from the list, Control-click the item and select Remove from List . You can also remove all your recently downloaded items by clicking Clear in the top right of the popup.

By default, Safari automatically deletes downloaded items after a day. If you want to change this:

Go to Safari > Preferences .
Click General , then go to Remove download list items . Choose from After one day , When Safari quits , Upon successful download , or Manually .

How Apple made Safari about 60% faster in the last 6 months

A month ago, we told you about the release of Speedometer 3.0 , a new web performance testing benchmark that aims to provide a more fair and representative measure of how a web browser performs at modern web tasks. Unlike earlier versions of Speedometer, which were made more or less by Apple’s WebKit team, version 3.0 is made in a collaboration between Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla with a new governance model to agree upon what tests are important representations of the modern web.

In other words, it’s probably the most “fair” and up-to-date measurement of web browser performance we have right now.

WebKit is the rendering engine used by Safari and provided to Apple developers who wish to use web rendering within their apps. It’s required to be used by every browser on iOS or iPadOS except for those inside the EU. Apple’s WebKit development team published a blog post detailing how they used Speedometer 3.0 as a guide to optimize performance from Safari 17 (released in September 2023) and Safari 17.4 (released in March 2024).

Over those six months, a lot of small incremental improvements made a big difference. As the blog post summarizes:

With all these optimizations and dozens more, we were able to improve the overall Speedometer 3.0 score by ~60% between Safari 17.0 and Safari 17.4. Even though individual progressions were often less than 1%, over time, they all stacked up together to make a big difference. Because some of these optimizations also benefited Speedometer 2.1, Safari 17.4 is also ~13% faster than Safari 17.0 on Speedometer 2.1. WebKit blog post

Some of those improvements include things like batching compositing layer updates, increasing cache size on macOS, improving inline and SVG layout, and more. Many of these improvements are minor, resulting in just a few percentage points here or there, or targeting very specific parts of web performance. But multiple small improvements compounding over time made for a much faster browser.

This doesn’t mean Safari is much faster than other Mac browsers, though. When we tested Speedomenter 3.0 last month , we were running Safari 17.4 and found it to be the fastest browser but only by a very small margin. Edge still had some catching up to do, but Chrome and Firefox are both just behind Safari’s Speedometer score.

iOS 18 May Feature All-New 'Safari Browsing Assistant'

iOS 18 will apparently feature a new Safari browsing assistant, according to backend code on Apple's servers discovered by Nicolás Álvarez . MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris confirmed that the code exists, but not many details are known at this time.

Update: Álvarez has since said that iCloud Private Relay might not be related to this feature.

A browsing assistant in Safari could be one of the many new generative AI features that are rumored to be coming to the iPhone with iOS 18 later this year. There are already multiple iPhone web browsers with AI tools, such as Microsoft Edge with a GPT-4-powered Copilot and Arc Search , which can summarize web pages to provide concise information.

Álvarez also uncovered a so-called "Encrypted Visual Search" feature in the backend code on Apple's servers, but no specific details are known. MacRumors contributor Steve Moser last year discovered a new Visual Search feature for Apple's Vision Pro headset in visionOS beta code, which would allow users to copy and paste printed text from the real world into apps and more, but the feature has yet to launch. It is possible that Apple is planning to debut a more secure version of the feature. However, the code could also relate to the iPhone's existing Visual Look Up feature that can identify objects in photos and videos.

Apple is set to unveil iOS 18 during its WWDC keynote on June 10 , so we should learn more about these potential new features in a few more months.
