U.S. News Insider Tip: Rent an e-bike at one of the shops on the Santa Monica Pier and spend the afternoon riding 3 miles (one way) along the Marvin Braude Bike Trail to Venice Beach. Stop for lunch at the Venice Whaler. â Sharael Kolberg, Contributor, Travel
Santa Monica's 3 ½ miles of shoreline, known as Santa Monica State Beach, is renowned as one of the area's best , thanks to the soft sands, ideal weather and bevy of attractions. In addition to the gorgeous stretch of sand, the beach is home to unique amenities like the Original Muscle Beach (a 1930s-era beach park with retro gym equipment), the Santa Monica Pier and Pacific Park amusement park. There are plenty of casual places to dine and shop for souvenirs. What's more, the beach offers traditional facilities, such as the North Beach Playground and the Annenberg Community Beach House , a public recreation facility that features a pool, a splash pad, a playground and beach courts, among other amenities.Â
Santa Monica Pier Santa Monica Pier free
Stretching from the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and Ocean Front Walk (the end of Route 66) to a spot above Santa Monica Bay, the Santa Monica Pier is the beach 's most recognizable landmark. Not only will you see it in countless photos of the city, but you'll also catch a glimpse of it in several films, including "Forrest Gump." Some of its most popular amenities include a historic carousel (housed in the Looff Hippodrome), the Heal the Bay Aquarium and Pacific Park , which boasts an assortment of arcade games, rides and food stalls.
According to past travelers, Santa Monica's pier is a must-see, with nice eateries and great views. However, a few recent visitors lamented the pier's thick crowds and amount of homelessness.
Explore the Marvin Braude Bike Trail Explore the Marvin Braude Bike Trail free
Santa Monica's abundance of trails and sublime weather year-round make it an excellent destination for cycling. In the heart of the city, you'll discover the Marvin Braude Beach Trail (or "The Strand," as it's called by locals), plus scenic thoroughfares like Main Street and San Vincente Boulevard that are bike-friendly. The city also sits just south of the Santa Monica Mountains, where additional trails are available for mountain biking. Electric bicycle tours can be arranged as well, if you want some insight about what you're seeing as you explore Santa Monica and nearby Venice Beach .
Previous visitors overwhelmingly recommended biking the 22-mile Marvin Braude Beach Trail, citing its phenomenal ocean vistas and well-maintained path as highlights. However, some say it can get a bit congested and warn to watch for pedestrians. You can also consider venturing farther out â the trail's northern terminus is located at Will Rogers State Beach in LA 's Pacific Palisades neighborhood and ends at Torrance County Beach in Torrance â for a less crowded experience. If you'd like to rent a bike and explore on your own, consider a reputable company like The Bike Center . For a guided tour, reviewers suggested booking an electric bicycle tour with Pedal... or Not , which reviewers praise for its knowledgeable guides and easy-to-use bikes.

Tongva Park Tongva Park free
Like skinnier Palisades Park to the west, Tongva Park offers a welcome respite from Santa Monica's tourist-filled beach and shopping thoroughfare. In this 6-acre oasis, which is named after the region's Indigenous Tongva Indian Tribe, you'll find a mix of native and locally appropriate plants spread throughout four areas: Observation Hill, Discovery Hill, Garden Hill and Gathering Hill. Observation Hill beckons to those in search of phenomenal ocean panoramas. Discovery Hill draws families with its kids' amenities, including a splash pad, a play area and a shaded picnic facility. Garden Hill impresses nature lovers with its stunning flora (think: colorful lilies, agaves in various shapes and tall pokers in fiery hues). And Gathering Hill draws culture hounds keen on attending a free concert at the amphitheater or checking out the park's unique Weather Field art installation.
Previous visitors loved Tongva Park's thoughtful design, central location, beautiful landscaping and excellent children's amenities. However, some felt uncomfortable with the number of homeless residents they saw here during their visits. If this is a concern to you, plan on visiting during the day; several past visitors said the park felt less safe at night.
Pacific Park Pacific Park free
Whether you're traveling with children or craving an adrenaline rush, Pacific Park delivers. Located on the Santa Monica Pier , this ocean-facing amusement park is packed with arcade games and thrill rides. Like carnivals and fairs hosted annually across the country, Pacific Park offers a variety of classic games, including Whac-A-Mole, ring toss and water races. But the park's main draws are its 12 exhilarating rides. Soar above the pier on the world's only solar-powered Ferris wheel, swing back-and-forth on a sea dragon-themed ship, plummet 44 feet on a tower ride or go racing around the pier on the West Coast's only oceanfront steel roller coaster. When you're not enjoying the park's heart-pumping activities, buy a souvenir from a gift shop or grab a bite to eat from one of several quick-service food stalls.
Many previous travelers loved visiting Pacific Park, citing its family-friendly atmosphere and superb setting as highlights. However, a few cautioned that park can feel crowded at times due to its small size and popularity. Though you can pay for rides individually, several reviewers suggested buying the unlimited rides wristband so you can enjoy multiple rides more than once.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Keep your eyes peeled for celebrities as this is a popular filming location and has been the backdrop for films, such as "Freaky Friday" and "Pretty in Pink." You might be able to catch Hollywood in action. â Sharael Kolberg, Contributor, Travel
The Third Street Promenade, which stretches from Broadway (by Santa Monica Place ) to Wilshire Boulevard, is a popular shopping destination with an eclectic vibe. This open-air shopping mall is filled with major chain stores like Urban Outfitters and H&M, as well as more unique boutiques. You'll also find that outdoor dining options â many of which use local ingredients â are plentiful. And if you're in the mood to cook your own meal, you can find fresh produce at the farmers market every Wednesday and Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Annenberg Community Beach House Annenberg Community Beach House free
The history of the Annenberg Community Beach House dates back to the Gold Coast era of the 1920s. The 5-acre oceanfront site, which included a 100-room mansion, was originally developed by William Randolph Hearst for actress Marion Davies. Though the main mansion was demolished in 1956, elements of the original site, such as the guest house and pool, remain to this day.Â
Today, visitors to this public facility at Santa Monica State Beach will have free access to a courtyard with tables, chairs and umbrellas, a splash pad, a viewing deck, a playground, beach volleyball courts, beach soccer courts and sandy areas. Visitors can pay to take classes, such as yoga, rent standup paddleboards or swim in the pool.
Palisades Park Palisades Park free
For beautiful views of Santa Monica Bay without rubbing elbows with hordes of tourists, walk a block back from the beach to Palisades Park. Situated within walking distance of central sights like the Santa Monica Pier and the Third Street Promenade , this narrow but long park â which is bordered by Ocean Avenue, the Pacific Coast Highway, Colorado Avenue and Adelaide Drive â offers plenty of postcard-worthy vistas. What's more, the 26.4-acre park is packed with amenities designed to help you relax while soaking up some sun. In addition to housing standard park facilities like picnic tables, benches and restrooms, you'll have access to a rose garden, public art and a space that hosts monthly art classes for adults. There's also a visitor center kiosk on-site, should you want additional information about things to see and do in the area.
When you're not taking pictures of the water, you should admire the park's gorgeous flora. You'll find all kinds of drought-tolerant species here, including agave plants and palm trees. Plus, Palisades Park features a gorgeous rose garden and interesting sculptures. Travelers highly recommend it as a nice place for a family picnic. However, finding an empty park bench can be a challenge at times due to the park's popularity with the local homeless community.

Tucked beneath the Santa Monica Pier , Heal the Bay Aquarium aims to educate locals and tourists about the aquatic creatures that live in Santa Monica Bay. At this small aquarium, you'll find exhibits for more than 100 local species, plus hands-on activities (think: touch tanks) and daily educational programs, such as animal feedings and discussions hosted by aquarium scientists. Some of the creatures you may see here include red octopuses, sea jellies, swell sharks and stingrays.
Past visitors said the aquarium is best for young children (12 and younger) because of its small size. Reviewers say older kids and teens may be bored by the aquarium's minimal displays. However, past travelers praised the on-site staff for their knowledge and enthusiasm.
Santa Monica Place Santa Monica Place free
If one of your favorite pastimes is shopping, then you'll want to check out Santa Monica Place. Situated next to the Third Street Promenade , another shopping mecca, this modern outdoor mall is filled with high-end boutiques. Some of the retailers available here include Coach, Louis Vuitton, Nordstrom and Tiffany & Co. There are a variety of eateries, ranging from casual grab-and-go staples like Sbarro to classic sit-down restaurants like Johnny Rockets and The Cheesecake Factory to local options like The Dudes' Brewing Company.
Overall, recent visitors praised this mall's diverse selection of shops and restaurants, as well as its prime location and clean facilities. However, a few reviewers enjoyed the ambiance at the Third Street Promenade more, so if you only have time to visit one shopping destination, consider skipping this one.

The best things to do in Santa Monica
1. Palisades Park
- Things to do
- Santa Monica
For stunning views of the ocean and Santa Monica Mountains, this bluff-top park along Santa Monica’s northern coast is the spot. It’s the classic image of L.A.’s coastline that lives in most people’s heads. You’ll find thicker crowds of tourists in the section by the Santa Monica Pier, so instead keep toward the northern Pacific Palisades-adjacent end, past the stately concrete sculpture at Wilshire and the colorful totem pole at San Vicente.
Go on a Santa Monica and Venice Beach bicycle ride.
2. Santa Monica Farmersâ Market
- Markets and fairs
When you’re next sat in a local restaurant and feel tempted to ask the server where the incredibly fresh vegetables on your plate came from, don’t bother. We can save you the trouble and answer that for you: the Santa Monica’s Farmers’ Market, of course. The market takes place on Saturdays and Sundays in other parts of Santa Monica, but the best day to pay a visit is Wednesday (8am–1pm) when it fills Arizona Avenue. Find the rest of L.A.’s best farmers’ markets .
3. Santa Monica State Beach
- Downtown Santa Monica
Running the length of Santa Monica itself, this huge beach is usually packed with people, but has a festive, summer-holiday feel to it. The main attraction is the world-famous Pier, and the biggest crowds can be found clustered around it. If you’re looking for a more relaxed vibe, stray as far from the pier as you can in either direction and you can find some quieter patches. There are bathrooms, bike paths and paid parking positioned along almost the entire stretch of sand. Looking for more of L.A.’s best beaches ?
Rent a bike and cruise Santa Monica.
4. Santa Monica Pier
- Historic buildings and sites
The center and focal point of Santa Monica Beach, Santa Monica Pier is home to a whole host of different attractions. Pacific Park is a traditional fair with a roller coaster and Ferris wheel, plus plenty of fairground games, an aquarium and a classic carousel housed in the historic Looff Hippodrome. There are also regular outdoor music and film events hosted at the Pier, bringing a different, hipper crowd to the boardwalk.
See the Santa Monica Pier on a guided bike tour.
5. Aero Theatre
- Movie theaters
- Independent
The Aero Theatre has been in operation since the 1940, a history and legacy it flaunts with screenings of classic films and contemporary independent cinema. This Art Deco landmark also hosts special feature programs plus director lectures and appearances. The Aero is operated by American Cinematheque, who also programs the Los Feliz Theatre and the famous Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood —another venue film buffs should take the time to visit (once it wraps up its renovation).
Catch a film at some of our other favorite movie theaters .
6. The Original Muscle Beach
Not to be confused with its showier Venice sibling , this workout playground for grown-ups has given Santa Monica’s biggest and burliest somewhere to sweat and strut their stuff for a century. On weekends, you’ll see some amazing gymnasts tackle the parallel bars, uneven bars and rings swings. Even with all that machismo, the vibe here stays friendly and no one will mind if you choose to get involved, or just sit and take it all in.
Stop by Muscle Beach on a bike tour.
7. McCabeâs
- Music venues
- price 2 of 4
A revered guitar shop by day, stocked to the ceilings with rare and obscure guitars and other instruments, McCabe’s also has a cozy back room where performances are held in an intimate environment. Gigs are usually held on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays but it’s a worth a visit just to gawp at the dozens of beautiful guitars hanging from the walls.
8. Santa Monica Stairs
Does your idea of a good time involve some serious aerobics and muscle burn? Well, get yourself over to these twin Santa Monica stairs that are a mecca for hard bodies and weekend fitness warriors. You can choose to ascend via either 199 concrete steps or 170 (wider) wooden steps. If it’s all a bit too corwded, jog over to Mesa Road and less well known La Mesa stairs. Blink and you’ll miss the narrow entryway wedged between 404 and 410.
Feel the burn at these other free L.A. workouts .
9. Third Street Promenade
- Shopping centers
A four-block pedestrianized stretch that runs down Third Street from Wilshire Boulevard to Colorado Avenue, Third Street Promenade is a pleasant but commonplace parade of mostly familiar names. Though the open-air plaza isn’t quite as buzzing as it once was, there are still some out-of-the-ordinary stops here: The excellent Wednesday morning farmers’ market is worth a trip, as is an outpost of Silverlake Ramen . Consider grabbing a happy hour drink just around the corner at the Misfit .
Book L.A. tours and attractions.
10. Tongva Park
What was once just another concrete parking lot has been transformed into a oceanside oasis of green space at Santa Monica’s Tongva Park. This idyllic and well-designed verdant space includes a playground, waterfalls, walking paths, meadows and a conch-like, wireframe lookout to the Pacific. Sneak over to Chez Jay at the corner of the park for a drink.
Relax in more of the best parks in L.A.
11. Bergamot Station
Home to a slew of different contemporary and fine art galleries, this artsy enclave is the perfect destination for cheap dates and lazy days. If the art doesn’t do anything for you, the edgy architecture, stylish café (housed in an old heater factory that serves meatloaf and mint lemonade), and fragrant stands of wild bergamot scattered about should amp up the atmosphere. And though a number of the galleries have shuttered in recent years, you’ll find fresh activity thanks to standout restaurant Birdie G’s .
12. Santa Monica Place
- price 3 of 4
Located at the southern end of the Third Street Promenade, this revamped shopping center is packed with upscale department stores and designer boutiques from brands like Coach and Louis Vuitton. There’s nothing particularly notable about Santa Monica Place (though it is getting a Din Tai Fung ), but it’s a pleasant destination for some retail to-dos thanks to three floors of sophisticated shopping set around an open-air courtyard.
13. Annenberg Community Beach House
Pool closed Oct–May, grounds open daily.
This modern community beach club was originally built by William Randolph Hearst in the 1920s as an opulent beachfront estate for Hollywood star Marion Davies. These days, it’s very much open to the public. The five-acre beach house includes a recreation room for games as well as a swimming pool, sports facilities, a cafe and paddle board rentals. You can also take a sunset swim on select evenings during the summer.
Splash around in some other public pools throughout L.A.
14. California Heritage Museum
- price 1 of 4
Step out of the sun and take in a bit of California history in a restored 1894 house. Though the house itself—devoted to the Victorian period—is worth a look, rotating exhibitions on topics related to the region are the real draw. The museum is at its busiest on Sundays, though only outside: It hosts the Santa Monica farmers’ market every Sunday morning.
15. Santa Monica Airport
It’s the oldest operating airfield in L.A. County (though slated to be closed and turned into a park by the end of the decade) and the birthplace of the Douglas DC-3. Originally called Clover Field, the Santa Monica Airport has developed over time into an arts incubator and is home to a number of creative venues housed in converted airplane hangars like the Ruskin Group Theatre Co. and events space the Barker Hangar.
Have an hour to kill near the 10 or the 405? Watch planes land up-close at Santa Monica Airport.
16. Museum of Flying
This small museum dedicated to the history of aviation moved into new premises at the Santa Monica Airport in February 2012. Inside you can learn all about the history of Southern Californian aviation companies including, Boeing, Lockheed, North American and Northrop with numerous exhibits and displays bringing the planes and their stories to life. Flight fans will love the carefully preserved static and flyable aircraft that call this place home.
17. Santa Monica Camera Obscura
Temporarily closed.
This curious old optical contraption is a historical and offbeat place to catch your breath, whether you’re waiting for late stragglers to your dinner reservations or trying to find a quiet escape from the pier. Though the technology behind this rudimentary camera-like room is thousands of years old, it still feels like magic. Have an hour to kill along Ocean Avenue? Take a step inside the Camera Obscura.

The Santa Monica Pier is a classic landmark of the city and the seaside terminus of historic Route 66 . It's surrounded on both sides by Santa Monica State Beach and this family- and dog-friendly pier is filled with fun things to do and plenty of people to watch.
Pacific Park on the pier is perhaps the most eye-catching attraction, thanks to its iconic Ferris wheel and roller coaster jutting high above the boardwalk. The Ferris wheel is especially noticeable at night, when the ride illuminates the pier from a distance. This ocean amusement park also features the popular Playland Arcade, adding a bit of nostalgia to this central beach attraction.
Other attractions on the pier include bike rentals, beach and souvenir shops, as well as the Heal the Bay Aquarium hidden beneath the carousel building. Much of the experience of visiting the pier is simply strolling the length and appreciating the ocean views and people watching, including numerous musicians playing on the boardwalk.

Highlights: One of the best beaches in LA with plenty of space for the crowds that show up
Santa Monica State Beach spans over 3.5 miles on either side of the iconic Santa Monica Pier . It's one of the top beaches in the Los Angeles area , less than 15 miles from Hollywood, attracting millions of beachgoers to spread their towels out on the sand each year.
The Santa Monica Pier bisects the beach into Santa Monica State Beach North and Santa Monica State Beach South. Both sides of the beach have different access points, but each caters to activities like building sandcastles, surfing, and soaking up the sun.
Fun places to visit at Santa Monica State Beach South include the International Chess Park and Carousel Park. The Original Muscle Beach is also south of the pier, featuring a wide range of fitness equipment, including gymnastic rings. Santa Monica State Beach also has easier beachfront parking.
North of the pier, facilities like the Annenberg Community Beach House provides inclusive beach amenities, including volleyball courts, beach seats, and a swimming pool. Santa Monica State Beach north is only accessible by descending from Palisades Park over the Pacific Coast Highway via the Pier or pedestrian bridge.
Address: Pacific Coast Highway, Santa Monica, California
Highlight: Twenty-two-mile bike trail connecting the entire Santa Monica shoreline
The 22-mile Marvin Braude Bike Trail, also known as The Strand , spans the entirety of the Santa Monica shoreline. It stretches from Will Rogers State Beach north of Santa Monica all the way down to Torrance County Beach. And navigating this sandy expanse is one of the most popular things to do when visiting.
The path is popular for bicyclists, walkers, runners, rollerbladers, and anyone getting around without a motor. The trail is split between a walking and biking path along busier sections of the trail, including the Santa Monica waterfront. And as the most-used pedestrian path in the city, the trail certainly gets some use.
The real appeal of the Marvin Braude Bike Path is its length. The 22-mile route connects every beach within Santa Monica Bay, enabling nearly every ocean activity under the sun, as well as bonfire destinations for the evening. Whether looking for the best waves, the most solitude, or any number of beach volleyball courts, The Strand connects them all.
Highlights: Landscaped park next to downtown, separated from the beach by the Pacific Coast Highway
Tourists and residents tend to gravitate toward Palisades Park . This 26-acre coastal bluff park on Ocean Avenue overlooks the Pacific Coast Highway and Santa Monica State Beach and provides a well-manicured space with non-stop ocean vistas.
Palm trees, rose bushes, and plenty of places to take a seat line the cement path navigating this landmark city space, as well as pedestrian bridges that cross the highway and access the ocean. Palisades Park is also home to unique amenities like a camera obscura, pĂŠtanque courts, and public art installations.
Palisades Park is also a connecting point for several other attractions in the area, including the Santa Monica Pier . And on Ocean Avenue and farther inland, the lively streets of Downtown Santa Monica and the 3rd Street Promenade compliment the ocean activity.
While all vistas from Palisades Park catch the eye, the aptly named Inspiration Point on the north side of the park is worth the walk.
Address: Ocean Avenue, Santa Monica, California
Highlights: Lively pedestrian district with shops, restaurants, and sculptural landscaping
The heart of downtown Santa Monica is the 3rd Street Promenade . This pedestrian-only shopping space features a lot of foot traffic and tons of entertainment. Shops, restaurants, and talented street musicians line every block well into the night when this lighted area really shines. But whether day or night, something is bound to catch the eye on this fashionable retail strip.
Alongside the shopping, dining, and entertainment options like a movie theater and Augmented Reality Museum, the promenade is also home to beautiful landscaping. Dinosaur hedge sculptures, photo booths, and various sitting options define the aesthetic of this downtown district.
Address: 1351 3rd Street Promenade, Santa Monica, California
Highlights: Vast array of local menus featuring food from all over the world
Part of the Santa Monica experience is enjoying a meal out on the town. The city's food scene is wide and varied and highly lauded. From downtown digs to oceanfront views, it's easy to find something for everyone's taste.
A few notable favorites include Forma for Italian food and Tar & Roses for unique menu items like oxtail dumplings. And just about every taste is catered for â Japanese, Caribbean, and Polish cuisine are among the wide range of world flavors.
Highlights: Colorful beach, twisting bike path, several storefronts, and community attractions
Venice Beach is the southern city bordering Santa Monica, connected by the Marvin Braude Bike Path, also known as The Strand Beach Path. Venice offers its own distinct flavor of coastal appeal that's a bit more bohemian in spirit. The oceanfront district is well regarded for the art found on the streets and the style represented by the community.

This iconic building dates back to 1916 when it was brought to life by the famous carousel and amusement park designer Charles I.D. Looff. The current merry-go-round is still one of the top Santa Monica attractions, famous for its hand-carved wooden horses, intricate details, and 1,100 electric lights. Plus, after you take a whirl, you’ll have easy access to all of the roller coasters and carnival games on the Santa Monica Pier!

This famous outdoor gym featured city-provided equipment, including weightlifting equipment used by the country’s most famous bodybuilders at the time. Today, the space is a fun, free fitness area complete with climbing ropes, parallel and uneven bars, and ring swings for acrobats and gymnasts.
Muscle Beach Venice was created as an homage to the Original Muscle Beach in Santa Monica. Much like the original, Venice Muscle Beach features an outdoor space with everything from weightlifting equipment to acrobatic bars to rope climbing.

This cool Santa Monica attraction is located on the site of what was once a 110-room mansion built by William Randolph Hearst for actress Marion Davies. Although the mansion was demolished, the grand pool was repurposed and is now open to the public, as is the massive newly-built pool house.
This is a popular spot for families to splash around in the public swimming pool. There’s also a playground and splash pad for little ones. The adults in your crew will love joining in on one of the fitness classes, which range from yoga to beach volleyball. And if you want to get out on the water, you can rent stand-up paddleboards and get paddling!
15. Take a Hike in the Santa Monica Mountains
If you’ve had enough beachside fun and you’re craving something a bit more active, make your way into the spectacular Santa Monica Mountains. Here you’ll find 500 miles of trails perfect for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

There’s the Playland Arcade for some exciting games, a carousel with endless history to its name, and the whimsical and enticing Santa Monica Pier Aquarium to explore.
You can also opt to rent a bike, head to a souvenir or beach shop, or just stroll through the pier and watch the world go by.

At this amazing state beach, you can rent bikes, go to a picnic area, swim under lifeguard surveillance, take your kids to the playground, or book some items for water sports.
There are also lots of pathways that allow you to walk easily through the lovely sand, with spots peppered with chess tables, volleyball courts, and small scenic locations throughout.

3. Annenberg Community Beach House
Annenberg Community Beach House
The Annenberg Community Beach House is a huge facility open to the public located just north of the Santa Monica Pier.
It was built in the 1920s, during the Gold Coast era of California, and began as a privately owned mansion by the beach, belonging to none other than Marion Davies.
The Annenberg Community Beach House is now state-owned – and it’s among the best things to do in Santa Monica.
It’s essentially turned into the equivalent of a cultural center by the ocean and is an amazing location for anyone who seeks a getaway this weekend.
At this beach house, you’ll find playgrounds, beach cords, a swimming pool, and a splash pad, all bathed in the luxurious and fun beach town glory reminiscent of the roaring 20s.
Just like how it was considered the place to be when Marion Davies owned it, it still very much holds up a reputation for being the center of the beach community.
There are even rotating art exhibits and free tours!

4. Looff Hippodrome
MSPhotographic / Shutterstock
The Looff Hippodrome is named after its creator, one very famous German man named Charles Looff.
Looff was based in Brooklyn in the late 1800s but was known across the country for creating some of the nation’s most beautiful and exquisite carousel rides.
After the East Coast had been filled with Looff works, he moved over to Long Beach in California, where the Santa Monica Pier was slowly growing in popularity.
The town of Santa Monica was, at the time, investing a lot in the betterment of that pier and commissioned Looff to work his magic.
They gave him a whole pier to work with, and he and his sons began work on what he called Pleasure Pier.
The plan Looff had involved building a hippodrome amusement park.
A hippodrome is, essentially, a kind of open-air stadium of Greek history.
Traditionally, hippodromes were used for chariot races, but Looff planned to fill the “stadium” with circle swings, a masterful carousel, a roller coaster, a restaurant, a dance hall, and a Wurlitzer.
Visitors loved the fun and exciting entertainment site and it was the highlight of the pier.
The Looff Hippodrome was successful for years before Looff died in the middle of new construction for additions to his masterpiece.
All new renovations were stopped, but the current rides were maintained and stayed popular.
When the town started to consider removing the pier in favor of putting up a resort, a set of powerful storms nearly took out the two-story oval structure first.
The Pier Restoration and Development Task Force, formed in 1983, eventually managed to get the Looff Hippodrome the status of a historical landmark.
It was then restored to its former glory, though it sadly lacks the essential Looff carousel, replaced instead by one made in 1922.
Though it has changed from years of events, the Looff Hippodrome is still one of the main places to visit in the town.

Santa Monica, California is famous for many things, but one of those things is a simple road: Route 66.
It’s the country’s most famous road, arguably, and once upon a time, it was just one stop along the way of the East-to-West migration path.
When the Interstate Highway System was created, the rambling, winding road became less popular, but 85% of it remains in use to this day.
Few realize that Route 66 ends somewhere specific, and that place happens to be in Santa Monica, where the Route 66 End of the Trail Sign is erected.
Highway 66 was decommissioned officially in the year 1985, and there have been many rumors about the location of the original sign, with some believing this to be but a movie prop.
The Route 66 End of the Trail Sign isn’t an official highway sign, but it’s still one of Santa Monica’s points of interest.
Plus, it’s fun to speculate about its many rumors, and visiting it is one of the town’s free things to do.
The route will take you through old-fashioned diners with their neon glows, and it’s really nostalgic to drive down and appreciate the world left behind with the road’s end.

14. Santa Monica Camera Obscura
Joanne Dale / Shutterstock
Santa Monica Camera Obscura is located in the aforementioned Palisades Park, right in the middle of the town.
It is contained within a very small room, the door to which may be locked.
Simply knock on the door next to it and you’ll be able to receive a key – in exchange for temporarily leaving the front desk your driver’s license – to enter.
The unassuming room holds a large white disk with a wheel.
Operating it lets you shift a mirror and lens from a turret in order to project an image onto the disk.
The image simply takes the form of whatever is passing through the outside at the moment.
This is the Camera Obscura.
The Camera Obscura is thought to be one of the world’s first optical inventions, and it might date back to the era of ancient Greece.
Some experts think it and other devices like it would have been used by Renaissance-era painters to project images to paint onto their canvases.
In the Victoria and Edwardian eras, such cameras became common attractions along the sea for tourists and visitors, both in America and in Europe.
This particular camera was built in 1898 by Robert F. Jones, then gifted to this California town in 1907.
After 50 years spent documenting the world on the beach and pier, it was set up in the Adult Recreation Center.
Today, the center, still in its mid-century building, is a place for art and cultural community, often holding events and classes.
The Camera Obscura is its centerpiece.
Only very few of this type of camera remain in operation in the country.
To think that this hidden gem is so near to a bustling, fun tourist hub!
As such, this is one of the places to visit you should head to, especially if you have an interest in photography.

15. Santa Monica Stairs
Santa Monica Stairs
Santa Monica Stairs were never meant to be one of California’s tourist attractions, but the hidden gem tucked neatly into an unassuming residential area has gained popularity as of late, especially among the fitness-oriented crowd.
The public walkway has over 300 steps made of a mix of concrete and wood and anyone climbing up or down is sure to feel the burn in their legs.
199 steps of concrete and 170 steps of wood across two sets of stairs are the exact details of this unique and unusual spot.
The wooden stairs are wider but the concrete ones have a banister for stability, so it’s really up to you which one works best.
If you’re lucky, there might be some grab-and-pay water bottles, sold for $1 based on an unsupervised honor system, to fuel you at the top of the stairs.
It’s pretty common for the stairs to be busy with people exercising, and that might be one of the unintentionally cool activities for tourists to do at least once while here.
You’ll see some seasoned experts performing sit-ups, pull-ups, push-ups, or jumping rope between their laps of the stairs.
Do keep in mind that there aren’t any facilities here, as it’s a residential area’s staircase, so you’ll have to run over to the nearest restroom on Ocean Avenue if you need to go.

16. Tongva Park

Looking for fun things to do in California ?
Located just off Ocean Avenue, Tongva Park covers six acres in the southern area beneath Santa Monica Pier.
This urban park is everything you need for a fun and relaxing evening, with enough activities and things to see to keep you occupied without being overwhelming.
The space used to be a parking lot, but Los Angeles turned it into a green area!
Sculptures, gardens, playgrounds, a fountain, and picnic locations make for great walks through the space, and the accompanying ocean breeze of the California coastline is always a welcome addition.
It’s tranquil and minimal, but it certainly does the trick as an idyllic and beautifully designed spot for resting your feet and mind.
Address: 1615 Ocean Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90401, United States
17. Sweet Rose Creamery
Sweet Rose Creamery
The humble and quaint Sweet Rose Creamery serves some of the best ice creams in California.
It was first opened in 2010 by Shiho Yoshikawa, an executive chef, with his business partners Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan in Brentwood Park.
Now, it’s expanded to five different neighborhood branches, each one using organic, locally sourced ingredients to create high-quality treats.
Lots of different flavors are available at Sweet Rose Creamery.
There are classics, like chocolate and mint chip, and also more unorthodox options like cherimoya coconut and sweet potato swirl.
There are also sorbets made dairy-free with cool options like kiwi and horchata coconut to choose from.
If you’re craving some ice cream, Sweet Rose Creamery is one of the most recommended places to go!

18. Santa Monica Place

If you love shopping, you’ll find that a stroll around Santa Monica Place may be one of the top things to do in Santa Monica, California.
It has a mix of familiar names and lesser-known brands and eateries.
Most interestingly, the shops you may recognize, like Bloomingdales and Nordstrom, actually have local twists.
For example, both stock accessories and fashion trends are made by designers from the town, and there are more than a hundred original art pieces showcased at Bloomingdales.
For a fun meal, head up to the rooftop to enjoy a lovely dining experience.
There are so many different cuisine types to choose from, so you’re sure to find one that you like!

19. Broad Stage
The Broad Stage
Broad Stage is located in the Santa Monica Performing Arts Center and has been open since 2008.
It seats 500 people and is this California town’s most modern and technologically advanced space for the performing arts.
It’s also the biggest, and its repertoire of performances means it’s the best place for stage shows in town!
Musicals, theater shows, symphonies, dance shows, and orchestral performances dot the Broad Stage’s calendar.
It’s a great fun place to go for a great show, whether at night or during the day.
Need something a little more intimidating?
Head to the adjacent theater called The Edye, another one of the town’s points of interest for performances.
Address: 1310 11th St, Santa Monica, CA 90401, United States
If you’re looking for cool things to do in Santa Monica, California, jAdis should be on your list of places to visit.
It’s a one-of-a-kind location that’s chock-full of science fiction memorabilia and paraphernalia, antique instruments of science, and a collection that grows and grows.
jAdis was founded by Parke Meek, an antique collector and well-known designer for furniture.
Three decades ago, he and his partner Susan Leiberman opened jAdis together.
Functioning as part science “museum”, it mainly focused on Meek’s fascinating private collection of all sorts of curiosities of science until it grew to include a prop rental service.
Meek’s items have appeared in countless different shows and movies, including X-Files, Batman and Robin, and Waterworld.
jAdis also boasts cool replicas, like the town of Lost children’s headpiece and a robot from Metropolis.
For a long time, jAdis was closed to the public, open only to private collectors and movie studios, but it was opened for a few hours weekly with a $1 entry fee a while later.
In 2010, Meek passed away.
jAdis continues its tradition of opening to the public for a low fee.
It is now run by Leiberman, who also has a shop next door, and Mel Bloch, a lifelong friend of Meek.
Block loves talking about Meek’s life and is happy to show visitors in.
A mix of memorabilia and items designed by Meek’s own genius is visible throughout the store.
Van de Graaf generators, celestial spheres, Tesla coils, antique orreries, switchboards, and more can be seen all throughout this incredibly unique store!

There's a lot going on at Santa Monica Pier , home to the aforementioned Pacific Park as well as the legendary and historic 1920s carousel , which features 44 wooden animals and was featured in the classic Paul Newman and Robert Redford film, "The Sting." It is also where you'll find the Heal the Bay Aquarium , which we'll get into a bit later, and the Los Angeles outpost of the New York Trapeze School , where you can realize all your circus trapeze fantasies like a pro. In addition to the food court, there are several restaurants to suit every budget and taste. Summer concerts are sometimes held on the extended south side of the pier, so check the events schedule on the website before planning your trip. If anything, stop by long enough to catch a beautiful California sunset.
Relax on Santa Monica Beach
TripSavvy /Â Christian Hundley
Located right next to the popular pier, Santa Monica Beach is one of the best spots in the Los Angeles area to just sit back and enjoy the sun, surf, and sand, as well as a plethora of other beach activities you can do along the water. Grab a picnic blanket and spend some time unwinding along the Pacific, whether you prefer to flip through a book or magazine, or just sit and listen to the waves crashing along the shore. For a real treat, stick around for sunset.
Learn About Marine Life at Heal the Bay Aquarium
Heal the Bay Aquarium , located at the foot of the Santa Monica Pier, is a a great place to learn more about Pacific sealife, since the facility is run as a marine education center by the non-profit Heal the Bay. While it's nowhere near as large as the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, Heal the Bay Aquarium still showcases more than 100 sea animals and plants found in Santa Monica Bay, featuring lots of sea creatures you can touch.
Go for a Stroll Along the Third Street Promenade
TripSavvy / Kayte Deioma
Third Street Promenade is one of the L.A. area's best pedestrian shopping zones. Street performers provide a festive atmosphere on evenings, weekends, and daily during the summer. While many of the unique shops and food stalls that once gave the Promenade its charm have been replaced by chain stores and restaurant franchises, it's still a lively place to be. The pedestrian zone stretches three blocks from Broadway at Santa Monica Place to Wilshire Blvd.
Climb the Santa Monica Stairs
One free activity that draws fitness buffs looking for a good workout is climbing the Santa Monica Stairs. There are two sets of very steep stairs stretching from Adelaide Drive at the top to Entrada Drive at the bottom. If you search on Google Maps for the Santa Monica Stairs, you'll be directed to 699 Adelaide, the address of house across from the top of the stairway pictured here. You'll find free street parking at the top and bottom, but since most people go to Adelaide Drive, it's sometimes easier to find parking on Entrada Drive and start at the bottom.Â
Walk, Bike or Skate Your Way Along "The Strand"
The Marvin Braude Bike Trail, better known as "The Strand," is a 22-mile paved trail that runs from Will Rogers State Beach just north of Santa Monica to Torrance Beach in the south. There are plenty of places to rent bikes or skates so you can spend an hour or all day biking or skating along several miles of paved beach path that stretch as far south as Redondo Beach or north to Malibu. The museum features several exhibits related to the Douglas Aircraft Company, as well as other historic planes, replicas, and models, including the Douglas DC-3 Spirit of Santa Monica you'll see out front, built at Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica in 1942. Also worth checking out: a FedEx airplane cockpit that you can climb into for photo-ops.
Go Swimming at the Annenberg Community Beach House
 TripSavvy / Christian Hundley
The Annenberg Community Beach House is a public swimming pool, community center, and gallery located right on the beach at the northern end of Santa Monica State Beach. The property, which initially featured a 100-room mansion William Randolph Hearst had built for Marion Davies in the 1920s, has gone through various incarnations as a hotel and beach club over the years. The villa itself was torn down in 1956, while the beach club continued operating until the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, after which the city drew up new plans but lacked funding to implement them. Thankfully, Wallis Annenberg of the Annenberg Foundation came to the rescue and provided grant funding for the project.
In 2009, the Annenberg Community Beach House opened with the historic pool and the Marion Davies Guesthouse restored to their former glory, and brand new event spaces and recreation offerings, like beach volleyball, tennis, and soccer courts. Some can be reserved for a fee; others are free on a first-come-first-served basis.

Past collections include a 30-year retrospective of quilts by textile artist Alice Beasley, photographs taken of the legendary Andy Warhol, and paintings inspired by a California road trip by Suong Yangchareon.
See a Show at the Westside Comedy Theater
The improv, stand-up, and variety comedy club has gained a firm fan base since it opened in an alley behind the Third Street Promenade back in 2009. The ultimate California road trip: from San Francisco to Santa Monica
Where to stay, drink and dine along the Pacific Coast Highway
Of all the scenic drives in the world, the Pacific Coast Highway is undoubtedly top of many a road-trip bucket-list. A romantic, winding route taking you along the California coastline, you'll take in everything from dizzying, dense redwood forests to spectacular clifftop vistas and bohemian seaside resorts. It's no exaggeration to say that it often feels like being on a film set â and this is quite literally the case at many of the destinations, whether you pass over the Bixby Bridge made famous in Big Little Lies , or end up at the beaches in Santa Monica and Malibu, which were used for the filming of Baywatch .
If you're considering a PCH trip, one thing to note is the direction: travelling north to south is preferable, as it offers views uninterrupted by oncoming traffic. An entirely obvious statement but also an important one to consider: it's long (the second-longest highway in the US, in fact, taking approximately 10 hours of uninterrupted driving to complete) and there is a lot to see. In fact, there are so many recommended stops along the way that it's almost impossible to decide what to prioritise. We recommend the portion of the drive from San Francisco to Santa Monica, which includes what is widely agreed to be one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the world: the rugged, mountainous section of coastline known as Big Sur. Buckle up...
SAN FRANCISCO
Where to stay: 1 hotel san francisco.
But, eco excellence aside, the rooms are comfortable, the service highly commendable and the atmosphere calming; you can see why it describes itself as a "sustainable sanctuary". Even if you aren't actively looking for a hotel that ranks best in class on the responsibility scale (although let's face, it, we all should be), then there is much to love â not least the soothing Bamford Wellness Spa, which offers a variety of holistic treatments designed to nurture the mind, body and spirit.
The hotel's location is also hard to beat: situated on the Embarcadero, it's ideally stationed adjacent to the city's famous Ferry Building, which features a bustling selection of shops, restaurants and a farmer's market offering all manner of fare (don't miss the Hog Island Oyster Co for delicious, fresh seafood). Many of the rooms also offer views over the bay, so it's worth requesting this when you book. It's true that you're spoilt for choice with hotels in the Golden City, but 1 Hotel San Francisco is a stylish, sustainable option with thoughtful design, welcoming staff, and a fantastic location.
Where to eat: Terrene
Like the hotel in which it's situated, Terrene also takes influence from its surroundings and is respectful to the planet, with a menu featuring local, organic and sustainably sourced produce. The hotel's rooftop garden provides many of the ingredients used in both cooking and cocktails, while on-site beehives allow for the property's own honey production. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant operates under the watchful eye of executive chef Scott Koranda, who conceived a tempting menu inspired by both the San Francisco landscape and his own upbringing in the agricultural hotspot of Iowa. On it you'll find a selection of healthy bowls and salads alongside woodfire oven flatbreads, skewers and sliders. With a buzzy atmosphere and friendly staff, you'll want to grab a table outside on the terrace on a balmy North Californian evening.
Where to stay: Post Ranch Inn
There are special hotels, and then there's the Post Ranch Inn . This beloved Big Sur retreat tops many 'best hotel' lists, so renowned is it for its spectacular cliff-edge location and exclusive, hideaway feel. The 100-acre site is surrounded by towering redwoods, majestic mountains and wild meadows, and every single room â whether a rustic coastal cabin or a cosy treehouse suite perched on stilts â comes compete with incomparable views. It's little wonder that it's attracted the Hollywood set; Taylor Swift, Natalie Portman and George Clooney have all reportedly checked in in recent years.
Our Pacific-facing ocean house included a fireplace, spa-tub and curving wooden deck with loungers, on which we sipped wine while gazing, mesmerised, out to the horizon. The ranch also has a series of heated pools and hot tubs (ideal for those cooler California evenings), all of which have similarly awe-inspiring vistas.
While the amenities are generally faultless, there are two things you won't find in your room: a television or an alarm clock. Post Ranch is dedicated to helping guests switch off from the real world, and this means unwinding away from screens and sleeping in until you wake naturally (to a memorable sunrise over the ocean, ideally). The adults-only hotel promotes relaxation and reconnection â describing itself as "a sanctuary for the soul" â and is therefore unsurprisingly popular with couples looking for a romantic escape.
While you may well want to spend your entire time lounging in comfort, there's also plenty on offer in the way of activities, many of which have a wellness slant, including morning yoga, forest bathing and guided nature walks. There's even falconry, where you can get up-close with birds of prey and learn about local conservation efforts. Also, don't miss the Post Gallery, which showcases a selection of photography, sculptures and fine jewellery created by talented members of the local community, with regularly changing exhibits.
Given that the property's location is so integral to its success, it makes sense that Post Ranch operates at the forefront of environmental responsibility; their mantra is that "what is good for the planet is also good for your guests", and it's a sentiment that holds true. Aesthetically, the resort was designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape â with the aim of allowing guests to feel part of nature, rather than observers of it â with buildings constructed using natural materials and designed to fit around the trees, rather than having to remove them, as much as possible. But appearance aside, the sustainability efforts run deep, and environmental impact has been considered with every element: guestroom walls were created from reclaimed wine casks; the stilted tree houses were designed to protect the fragile roots of nearby redwoods and oaks; all water used is sourced and treated via seven wells located on site; a vast solar-panel installation helps to power the resort and reduce carbon emissions; 90 per cent of the ranch's 100 acres is maintained as a protected area â the list goes on...

Where to eat: Sierra Mar
Dining at Sierra Mar is an experience like no other. Before you even get to the menu, you're dazzled by the location â a glass box perched on the edge of the cliff, suspended over the Pacific ocean, the mist rolling in around you.
In keeping with the Post Ranch ethos, the restaurant operates a farm-driven dining experience, with dishes celebrating the "coastal bounty" of the region and designed with balance and sustainability in mind. If you're staying on site, then do take the opportunity to explore the chef's garden, which produces much of the fruit, vegetables and herbs used at Sierra Mar and throughout the ranch (plus a variety of medicinal plants, which are incorporated into spa treatments). Other produce is sourced from local businesses, allowing for menus that are a true reflection of the Big Sur surroundings.
Perhaps because diners are hypnotised by the view, the atmosphere at Sierra Mar is positively serene (it's arguably here that Post Ranch's adults-only rule is most noticeable), and each table has its own air purifier, to create an invigorating 'bubble' of fresh, filtered air for each party. The menus are seasonal, designed for sharing, and change daily. We feasted on yellowfin tuna tartare with puffed rice; a warming coconut and curry soup; pan-seared salmon; roasted king trumpet mushrooms; and duck breast with glazed apricots; finished with a mocha, mascarpone and cardamom OpÊra Gâteau. The restaurant also has an award-winning wine selection, with more than 3,200 labels on offer. If you need help whittling it down, the Sommelier Selection list features a curated edit of house favourites.
SIERRA MAR â BOOK NOW
Where to stay: The Rosewood Miramar Beach
As soon as I set foot in Montecito I could understand exactly why Prince Harry and Meghan chose to make it their home; this charming slice of the 'American Riviera' has a quiet, small-town appeal with understated glamour that attracts big Hollywood names. Hidden among the homes of the rich and famous is the Rosewood Miramar Beach , an elegant, estate-like property with immaculate lawns, luxurious lodgings and access to its own private stretch of beach.
We stayed in one of the Garden Bungalows, a light and airy single-storey suite that overlooked lush greenery, vibrant pink gardenia and red maple trees. The spacious guestroom featured a comfortable lounge with a roaring fire, a separate dressing area, a marble-tiled bathroom and an elegant bedroom with double doors opening up onto a patio and outdoor seating area. It was hard to decide whether I preferred sitting curled up here with a book, reclining by the pool with a cocktail, or soaking up the atmosphere at the beach club (in the end I opted to divide my time between all three).
While relaxation is encouraged, thereâs much to entertain, with six bars and restaurants, two pools and a variety of upscale boutiques â including one dedicated to Gwyneth Paltrowâs lifestyle brand, Goop (this is California, after all). The bar staff were knowledgable and friendly, and the cocktail list varied and interesting â particularly in The Manor Bar, where all the drinks are inspired by literature; an enjoyably lethal combination as I discovered one night. Here, the wooden-panelled walls are lined with shelves stacked with novels, and the intimate space is peppered with cosy vintage-style seating; little wonder that it's popular with guests and locals alike (truly, you never know who you might bump into...).
If you got a little overexcited in the bar one evening, then the rejuvenating Sense spa offers indulgent treatments and head-clearing activities such as sunrise yoga and guided sunset walks along the waterâs edge. They've truly thought of everything: the resort even has its own ice-cream parlour to help you cool off in the Santa Barbara sunshine.
ROSEWOOD MIRAMAR BEACH â BOOK NOW
Where to eat: AMA Sushi
While yes, the Rosewood Miramar Beach has multiple dining options, its Japanese restaurant, AMA Sushi , is arguably its most spoiling. And don't just take my word for it: it was recommended in the Michelin guide in both 2022 and 2023.
The restaurant focuses on Japan's Edomae tradition, which celebrates sushi in its purest form, and is inspired by the legacy of Japanese free divers. Showcasing always-fresh ingredients, two dining options are available. The first is an omakase tasting menu (omakase translates literally as "I leave it up to you"), encouraging an open-minded, spontaneous experience between the chef and diner, taking place at an intimate 13-seater sushi bar with a front-row seat to watch the masters at work. The second is the prix fixe menu, which offers a self-guided journey through traditional Japanese flavours. An advantage of the latter is that you're able to enjoy it in the restaurant's charming garden, alongside the coy pond, surrounded by floating lanterns. But whichever you opt for, you won't be disappointed. Expect to find classic sashimi, nigiri and cut rolls â featuring bluefin tuna, amberjack, dungeness crab and more â alongside black cod, braised pork belly, and wagyu striploin. Naturally, this is complemented by an extensive selection of wine, sake, and cocktails.
The restaurant's sustainability credentials are also commendable: AMA Sushi is endorsed by both SmartCatch and Ocean Wise â two bodies that are dedicated to protecting our oceans and supporting responsible practices.

SANTA MONICA
Where to stay: the georgian.
In 2023, one of Los Angeles' oldest hotels, The Georgian , reopened with a chic and stylish new look â one inspired by the resplendent Art Deco interiors of the original that first opened its doors in 1933. The property has been painstakingly restored in all its Wes Anderson-esque glory, complete with eye-catching turquoise façade, original arched ceilings, and bell boys dressed in retro baby-blue uniforms. This is all about storytelling; as soon as I set foot inside it was as if being transported back in time to the golden age of Hollywood. Indeed, the attention to detail is second to none, from the gold tasselled room keys hanging behind reception, to the old-timey record players in each guestroom with a curated selection of vinyls. Lift the receiver of the vintage rotary phone in the lobby and you'll hear a selection of voice messages from 'guests' who stayed in the hotel's 1930s' heyday. Press the golden 'champagne' button in your room, and a drinks trolley appears outside.
When The Georgian first opened its doors, it became known as the First Lady of Santa Monica, attracting guests such as Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin and Clark Gable, and acting as a discreet respite from the glare of the LA spotlight. Today, the property stands out among its Ocean Avenue neighbours; the jewel in the crown of the beachfront line-up. Of course, when it comes to the location, it's hard to beat; the property is situated along the beach boardwalk, a stone's throw from the Santa Monica Pier. There's nothing quite like having breakfast while gazing out to sea, and we were lucky enough to witness one of the legendary technicolour LA sunsets from our ocean-view suite one evening.
To say that the hotel is aesthetically pleasing would be an understatement. The rooms are spacious, with chic, carefully curated, candy-coloured interiors, plenty of luxurious finishing touches, and Slim Aarons-style photography adorning the walls. For a boutique hotel (with 28 suites and 56 rooms) the amenities are impressive; there's a library and games room with an honesty bar, a small gym, a co-working space, and even an art gallery, which previously hosted an exhibition of work by the actress Sharon Stone. An outdoor pool and sundeck is coming soon.
THE GEORGIAN â BOOK NOW
Where to eat: Sunset Bar, Terrace and Dining Room at The Georgian
The Georgian's restaurant is spread across three spaces: the Dining Room, the Sunset Bar and the Sunset Terrace , which offers simple, elegant beachfront dining. Here you'll find a mixture of hotel guests, locals and international visitors â with a limited number of daily walk-ups available â gathering for either brunch, dinner or spuntini ('snacks' in Italian).
The menu was crafted by chef David Almany and inspired by the "vibrant cuisine of coastal Italy", interspersed with global favourites. Don't miss the grilled jumbo prawns, the Georgian chopped salad, the garganelli oxtail ragu, or the free-range Chicken Milanese. There's also a caviar service if you're looking for that extra special something. New for 2024 are 'Spaghetti Sundays', with a heartwarming menu influenced by family-style Italian dinners (think home-made garlic bread, spaghetti with 'red sauce', and Italian meatballs). And, in keeping with the hotel's aesthetic, the cocktail menu features 1930s classics alongside more modern iterations.
Also, don't miss The Georgian Room, the hotel's speak-easy-style basement space â one of Santa Monica's most exclusive drinking and dining establishments, where privacy is protected and photography strictly banned. The menu is inspired by the hotel's history in the '30s and '50s, and the intimate space attracts a regular rotation of surprise musical guests. Legend has it that early patrons of The Georgian Room described frequent sightings of a mythical creature on the Santa Monica shoreline, holding a martini glass up high. Whether or not the fable is true, or simply an indication of how good the cocktails really are, remains to be seen...

The crashing waves, breathtaking views and endless recreation are just the beginning of the experience. Beyond the natural elements and fitness opportunities, thereâs also the iconic Santa Monica Pier with its own amusement park, equipped with the worldâs only solar-powered Ferris Wheel and a roller coaster.
So much of Santa Monicaâs culture stems from the beach and is reflected throughout the city. For a quick break from the sand and surf, the Annenberg Community Beach House and its historic swimming pool offers freshwater splashing and family-centered activities. 7. Hike to a nude beach via a hidden slot canyon in San Diego.
Take the Ho Chi Minh trail to Blackâs Beach- a clothing optional beach. Find the Ho Chi Minh trailhead in North La Jolla off of La Jolla Farms Rd. The trail is only 0.4 miles one way but most of the trail is made of sandstone so it is very slippery. There are also a few steep drop offs on the trail some may not be comfortable with.
8. Find the hidden swings in La Jolla .
One is easy to find and walk to, while the other is a little trickier and for the more adventurous.
The first is more popular and can easily be found by parking in the Birch Aquarium parking lot and walking a short, steep trail at the back of the parking lot.
For the second swing youâll want to park at the Sunny Jim Caves parking lot and walk down the coastal trail to the right. Right before you cross a white bridge, youâll see a broken down fence you will have to climb under. To get to the actual swing youâll have to walk down a very slippery, steep section on the side of a cliff.
9. Spot dolphins or whales on a boat tour .
Take a boat tour in San Diego , Newport Beach, or Long beach to search for dolphins or whales. You may be lucky and encounter a huge pod of dolphins- itâs quite common! Whale watching season is January- April.
10. Get authentic Mexican tacos at Tacos El Gordo in San Diego.
With 3 locations in San Diego, these are some of the best no-frill tacos you can get your hands on in Southern California.
11. Spot sea small creatures at the Cabrillo Tide Pools .
Be sure to check out the tide pools at low tide to see starfish, anemones, and other small marine life. To visit the Cabrillo National Monument you must pay a 20$ day use fee, or present your National Parks pass if you have one.
12. Find the hidden cave in Sunset Cliffs .
This epic scene is found by scaling down a cliff in Sunset Cliffs. Itâs challenging and can be very risky due to the nature of the crumbling sandstone. You can ONLY attempt to go into this cave at negative tide. We ran into someone coming down with a rope to scale the cliff which was a must. I highly recommend booking a tour to see this cave with Granger Nature .
13. Take a photo on the infamous potato chip rock .
It takes a steep 8 mile round trip hike, but the end result is worth it. This hike is located in Poway about 30 minutes from San Diego.

31. Visit the Natural History Museum in L.A.
What better way to learn about history than in the largest history museum in the Western U.S.?

Activities in Palm Springs & Desert Cities

43. Catch a sunrise to watch the cholla cactus glow in Joshua Tree.

This is a man made five-story high, 150-foot-wide art project. This âman-made mountainâ took 28 years to build by Leonard Knight.
50. Hike the Andres Canyon for a Palm Springs oasis.
This trail is an easy one mile loop through loads of palm trees. Take the Murray Canyon trail if you want something a bit longer. At 4 miles roundtrip, this trail will also take you to a waterfall!
51. Ride the aerial tramway in Palm Springs .
This is the worldâ largest rotating tram car. The car will take you 2 ½ miles with fantastic views of the surrounding desert.
52. Sip wine at a winery with a view in Temecula.
Temecula isnât technically the desert, but itâs half way between San Diego and Palm Springs. Itâs also a great place for hot air balloon rides.
Best Time to Visit Southern California
Southern California can be a great year round travel destination as it has a temperate climate. However there are some âbetterâ times to visit.
For the best weather and less crowds, visit in the spring and fall months.
Visit in the spring to get the best of wildflowers both on the coast and in the desert, as well as seeing the California poppies bloom.
In the summer months, the desert destinations of Joshua Tree, Anza Borrego, and Palm Springs can reach temperatures of 104F. For this reason, it is best to stick to the coastal destinations during these hot summer months.
Youâll never run out of things to do in Southern California whether you stick to the coast, head out into the desert, or take a boat to an island.

7 California Beach Town Alternatives To Santa Monica
Along Californiaâs stunning coastline are laid-back beach towns worth skipping Santa Monica for. Here are some Santa Monica alternatives to visit!
- Enjoy serene uncrowded beaches in California's quieter, less-crowded alternatives to Santa Monica, like Moss Beach, Gualala, and Jenner, which are all beautiful beach towns in California to visit.
- Experience the laid-back atmosphere and scenic beauty of small coastal towns like Cayucos as alternatives to Santa Monica.
- Skip the crowds and explore hidden gems such as Stinson Beach, Manchester, and Albion for relaxed vacations, all of which are lovely alternative destinations to Santa Monica.
What was once LA’s sleepy seafront neighbor is now a trendy destination that attracts approximately 8 million tourists annually . While one can’t help but commend Santa Monica’s journey to the tourist hotspot it is today, its iconic and historic pier, upscale beachfront restaurants, amusement parks, and beaches pull crowds that can be overwhelming.
However, there are lesser-known beach towns in California that are great alternatives to Santa Monica. These California beach towns present a coastal experience different from that of Santa Monica, as their attractions, state parks, and beaches are typically uncrowded. Being home to fewer residents also contributes to their laid-back atmosphere, plus their underdevelopment helps them maintain their coastal beauty.
Santa Monica may be a popular paradise for beach lovers and fun seekers, but these small and hidden gem towns in California are the perfect beach town alternatives to Santa Monica with similar experiences but without the crowds.
7 Small Towns In California That Are Great Alternatives To San Francisco
7 moss beach, san mateo county, though only miles away from the clamor of san franciso, this beach town has an undisturbed coastline that feels a world away.
Although often overlooked, Moss Beach is a serene and less crowded alternative to the vibrant and touristy nature of Santa Monica. Situated along San Mateo County’s coastside, this California beach town overlooks the Pacific Ocean, delighting vacationers with picturesque vistas before they visit the pristine shoreline. One of the best spots to soak in the dazzling ocean views is Pillar Point Bluff , a 220-acre park featuring the scenic Jean Lauer Trail .
This trail winds through the windswept bluff and is open to leashed four-legged companions, bicyclists, and horseback riders. The park also has a beach that is part of the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve , located north of Pillar Point Harbor . This reserve is popular with nature lovers for its tide pools brimming with marine life such as sea urchins, anemones, and intertidal species.
6 Cayucos, San Luis Obispo County
An underrated yet perfect alternative to santa monica (it's a coastal paradise for surfers and relaxation seekers).
Cayucos is one of the most charming towns in California that should be on every tourist's bucket list . This enchanting coastal town on California's Central Coast is also worth visiting over the bustling city of Santa Monica for its relaxed atmosphere and stunning natural beauty.
Tourists can experience Cayucos’ small-town vibe as they stroll along the quaint downtown area dotted with antique stores, art galleries, and family-owned restaurants such as the Lunada Garden Bistro . This restaurant sits on a historic property dating back to the 1870s and serves American dish specialties in a beautiful indoor and outdoor setting.
Cayucos' pleasant weather is also a draw, with beaches such as Cayucos State Beach providing a haven for tidepooling, surfing, and swimming with lifeguards on duty during summer. The beach also has a pier offering excellent fishing opportunities even when the sun goes down. It may not be famous like the Santa Monica Pier , but tourists can appreciate its uncrowded nature as they soak in the beautiful coastal views.
10 Scenic California Towns That Are Near Beautiful Hiking Trails For Avid Explorers
5 gualala, mendocino county, an off-the-beaten-path coastal town with a rich artistic culture and unspoiled green areas.
Gualala is a laid-back beach town offering a tranquil setting that rivals the bustling allure of Santa Monica. Nestled along the scenic Northern California coast, this under-the-radar town boasts a vibrant creative scene worth exploring at the Gualala Arts Center , which hosts workshops, art exhibits, and performances. Its art scene may not be as lively as that of Santa Monica, but that's what makes it unique.
Gualala is also home to the Gualala Point Regional Park , a picturesque haven drawing outdoor enthusiasts with its beautiful trails traversing above the scenic Gualala River. The trails also connect to the expansive sandy beach, where beach lovers can soak in the sunshine, collect seashells or driftwood, and enjoy a romantic stroll with a loved one.
For an unforgettable experience, visitors can spend a night in the park's forested campgrounds and wake up earlier to spot whales at the Whale Watch Point. Besides being a great alternative to Santa Monica, Gualala is also one of the many scenic beach towns to retire in Northern California .
4 Stinson Beach, Marin County
Skip santa monica for this town's laid-back vibe and exciting watersports (with fewer crowds).
Stinson Beach is a beautiful beach town in California's Marin County, dating back to the early 1900s when an earthquake forced people to move from San Francisco. This town is now home to about 541 people and is a perfect, quieter alternative to Santa Monica for tourists craving to vacation in a laid-back and small-town setting by the sea.
One of the town’s highlights is its small but vibrant and walkable downtown area with boutique shops, eateries, and galleries. It is the perfect spot to socialize with locals, sample local treats, or buy a souvenir to take home.
The downtown area is also near Stinson Beach , an underrated slice of paradise with fine white sand, clear water, and awe-inspiring Pacific Ocean vistas. Beach lovers can enjoy everything from a refreshing swim in the waters to sunbathing and hiking the nearby Stinson Beach Trail .
The peaceful setting, which is the opposite of the touristy Santa Monica Beach , is something solitude seekers will appreciate.
3 Manchester, Mendocino County
Though small, this serene coastal paradise offers water sports and wildlife-watching, especially in its namesake park.
While the nearby Point Arena gets all the attention, the small beach town of Manchester remains untouched by the touristy crowds despite its natural beauty.
Located in Mendocino County, this is one of the many uncrowded small beach towns in California worth skipping Santa Monica for, thanks to its unique countryside and coastal allure. A tour around town reveals vast grazing lands dotted with herds of cattle and flocks of sheep.
However, avid travelers craving the soothing sound of crashing waves head north to Manchester State Park on Highway One. Being among the underrated California state parks that are great alternatives to Yosemite National Park , this natural paradise features an uncrowded sandy beach with abundant driftwood extending southward to the Point Arena Lighthouse .
Visitors can also discover tundra swans and coastal wildflowers such as sea pinks, blue irises, and poppies while exploring the park’s flat grasslands.
Underrated, But Scenic: This Small Town In California Is A Great Alternative To Los Angeles
2 albion, mendocino county, even with attractions like the stunning albion river bridge, albion still gets overlooked for popular destinations like santa monica.
Albion is the idyllic town to take things slow and soak in the beauty of the Mendocino Coast away from the crowds of popular destinations in California like Santa Monica. With only 155 people calling it home , it's one of the small coastal towns in California for beach lovers seeking a slower-paced life.
Although the town’s surroundings may sometimes be shrouded by fog, there’s still a lot to discover, such as the nearby Albion River Bridge constructed in 1944. This picturesque wooden deck truss bridge crosses the peaceful Albion River, which offers kayaking and canoeing opportunities.
Other than visiting the bridge, vacationers can also enjoy strolling along Navarro Beach , known for its rock arch located on the northern end. While here, beachgoers enjoy camping in one of the nearby sites, swimming, and beachcombing.
1 Jenner, Sonoma County
Also known as jenner-by-the-sea, this small coastal town offers uncrowded beaches and glimpses of frolicking seals.
Jenner makes up for its small size with its postcard-worthy coastal beauty and tranquil atmosphere. The town’s main highlight is its gorgeous rugged coastline along the Pacific Ocean, providing an idyllic backdrop for bird and wildlife watching plus hiking, especially at Jenner Headlands Preserve .
For those traveling on a budget, this preserve is a must-visit, as it offers free admission for adventurers to watch whales and hike through a coastal prairie overlooking the ocean. The preserve is also home to the endangered northern spotted owl and red tree vole found in the Douglas-fir forests.
For a memorable beach experience, travelers can also visit Jenner Beach to beach comb or walk along the water’s edge. The beach also has offshore rocks worth exploring and taking pictures of at the northern end.
