Papua New Guinea Culture

Featured treks.

Papua New Guinea is one of the most diverse countries in the world. There are still many unexplored areas and is truly a land of amazing cultures. PNG has over 800 languages and is often described as the "Land of the Unexpected". Why are we still so untouched? If you have to trek anywhere in the country you immediately understand why, it is rugged beyond belief. If people have done Kokoda treks and thought that was difficult it is a walk in the park compared to the rest of the country. There are only 3 ways to travel in PNG, by air, by boat or walk. All roads go know where. It is expensive to travel domestically in PNG, but in its defence if people want to see the true depth of the culture that this land has to offer and be one of very few to experience it, if it was easy to get to everyone would be doing it. We have currently 4 Cultural Tours on the itinerary. These are set dates and the tour program is set around the 4 major cultural shows in PNG. They are the Mount Hagen Cultural Show, the Rabaul Mask Festival, the Sepik Crocodile Festival and the Goroko Show. If you have been everywhere and want to see something totally unique then one of the above shows should be considered. They are spine tingling affairs and an experience of a life time.

png experience tours

The Kokoda Trail is our most famous trek here in Papua New Guinea, it is also the highest tourism revenue earner for PNG. It is steeped in WWll history and is an emotional and physically challenging walk. We have spent many hours on the track opening up new areas for trekkers to visit pertaining to the Kokoda campaign.

Come and climb our challenging little mountain, Mt Wilhelm, PNG and Oceania’s highest mountain at 4509 meters. This is one of the most stunningly scenic areas of Papua New Guinea. For a smorgasbord of culture come visit us in August. Combine climbing the mountain followed by attending the famous Mount Hagen cultural show. Not to missed.

PNG Trekking Adventures (PNGTA) is an inbound licensed tourism company. PNGTA approaches adventures in PNG on a personal level, focusing on the individual experience for our guests. Treks and Cultural Tours are limited to ten – 15 people so you enjoy a more exclusive journey where you are an individual and not just part of a large group.

PNG is generally warm to hot and humid throughout the year. There is a rainy season, which varies from province to province, however, in general, it's driest from May to December. The air is clean; watch out for sunburn, particularly in the Highlands, even on overcast days. Up in the Highlands it is a lot cooler and wetter.

png experience tours

Our Cultural Tours are suited for a wide range of trekkers and travellers, with tours ranging from beautiful and vibrant cultural shows to amazing treks that are much more manageable for the less experienced trekker. Experiencing one of Papua New Guineas cultural tours is a once in lifetime experience that I would recommend Combine one of our exhilarating treks with an enriching cultural show. We have a variety of combinations to cater for anyone interested in the vibrant PNG culture. Malaria poses the most serious health risk. Advise your Doctor you are going to PNG. Your Doctor will brief you on the requirements for malarial precautions, which include. Avoiding mosquito bites by using ‘Rid’ repellent and by wearing suitable clothing. Taking anti-malarial drugs as prescribed sleeping under a mosquito net. Your Dr should also advise you on any other inoculations required for Papua New Guinea.

Responsible Tourist Behaviour Please respect local customs and traditions and wear appropriate clothing. Always ask before taking a picture Do not use offensive language. Do not offer alcohol or drugs to our PNG employees or villagers. Respect local religious observances. Please do not offer sweets or environmentally destructive products to our PNG children. Contact PNGTA office if you would like to donate/give items to the children or villages. Environmental Do not pick or destroy our flora and fauna. Remember when visiting villages you are walking through customary land, this land belongs to someone. Please be respectful. Do not drop litter.  If you see rubbish, pick it up.    We ask that our clients treat our PNG employees at all times with respect and dignity. We provide our staff with on going training to ensure that their skills and confidence with our guests are on par with PNGTA standards.  General We encourage our clients to integrate with the PNG people. If you give 100% you will get 120% in return. Remember you are here to have fun and an adventure. Small gifts are often given when visiting a family home in a village.  We always encourage gratuities in PNG. Remember this is supplementing a normally very low wage.

Best time to visit papua new guinea.

The best time to visit PNG is during the dry season when cool breezes and low humidity on the coast make temperatures comfortable.

Coastal areas can be very hot and humid during the monsoon and rainfall can be torrential.

The highlands are much cooler and have even been known to experience snowfalls.

Culture and customs

Papua New Guinea is home to hundreds of tribes – each with its own languages, beliefs, traditions and customs.

Cultures vary considerably throughout the island as tribes were isolated from each other for hundreds of years.

Locals wear bilas (traditional costumes and body decorations) at sing-sings (festivals) and many tribes still practice traditional ways of life, including initiation ceremonies to welcome young men and women into adulthood.

Geography and environment

Papua New Guinea is part of a chain of islands stretching between Asia and Australia. It has over 600 islands, the largest of which, Bougainville, shares a border with Indonesia .

The islands are notoriously rugged with heavily forested peaks hiding all manner of weird and wonderful flora and fauna.

Eating and drinking

Papua New Guinean cuisine is largely vegetarian with lots of tropical fruits and starchy root vegetables like sago, taro roots and sweet potato. Seafood, chicken and pork are also popular, though traditionally pork is eaten on special occasions. Below are some traditional foods to try in Papua New Guinea:

Sago is a starch extracted from the sago palm tree. It's one of the most popular foods in Papua New Guinean cuisine and is used for a wide range of sweet and savory dishes including pancakes and dumplings.

Saksak is a traditional Papuan dumpling made with sago. The pearls are mixed with mashed bananas and coconut milk and steamed in banana leaves. Sweet, chewy and moreish, saksak makes for a great breakfast or sweet snack.

Mumu is a traditional Papuan way of cooking in an earth oven. Parcels of vegetables, starches, meat and fruit are wrapped in banana leaves and steamed in a small pit filled with hot coals.

4. Kokoda fish

Kokoda fish is native to Papua New Guinea and Fiji. The fish is traditionally eaten ceviche-style by marinating cubes of raw fish in lime juice, coconut milk, sliced onions and fresh herbs.

5. Chicken pot

Chicken pot is a simple and hearty one-pot dish. It's made by boiling chicken, sweet potatoes, corn, onions and curry powder in a coconut milk-based broth.

Wildlife encounters

Papua New Guinea's diverse, fertile landscapes are home to a variety of wildlife – many of which you have a good chance of spotting when you're hiking. Below are some of the animals you may encounter:

1. Long-beaked echidna

The long-beaked echidna is an interesting critter, and not just because of its protruding schnoz! Looks-wise, this mammal is a mix between a platypus and a hedgehog. It also lays eggs which then hatch in a pouch. Fascinating, huh? Their long beaks have an awesome ability to detect small electric fields created by earthworms and insects that are a staple in their diet.

2. Flying fox

During the day, these guys literally hang out in mangroves, paperbark and bamboo forests to roost in groups that often exceed tens of thousands. Unlike other bat species, they have great eyesight and don't use   echolocation to hunt.

3. Raggiana bird of paradise

This beautiful bird is found predominantly on the eastern side of the island. They're known for their stunning plumage – especially the males with their brightly colored tail feathers, which attract mates during the breeding season.

4. Tree kangaroo

The tree kangaroo is similar to its ground-hopping cousin, except it spends most of its time hanging out in the treetops. They're awesome climbers and have adapted to have s maller legs and stronger forelimbs to ascend trunks and branches.   Their diet consists largely of leaves and fresh fruit.

5. Cuscus possum

This nocturnal marsupial is the world's largest possum species and is native to Papua New Guinea and the northernmost tip of Australia. They live in forests at high altitudes of 1200 meters and eat a varied diet of fruits, leaves and the occasional small mammal or egg.

Festivals and events

Nowhere does festivals quite like Papua New Guinea. Home to hundreds of tribal groups – each with their own languages, beliefs, customs and traditions – the sing-sings (festivals) here are like nothing you've ever seen before. Here are some of the most famous ones:

1. Sepik Crocodile Festival

The Sepik River is home to some of the world’s biggest fresh and saltwater crocs. Crocodiles are highly symbolic in Sepik culture and this festival is a way to honor the cultural connection to the reptile. Tribes arrive dressed in their best traditional bilas (body decorations) and performers entertain with elaborate dances to the hypnotic beats of kundu drums. You can also meet Sepik men who've had scars cut into their skin to resemble a crocodile’s scales as part of a rite of passage ceremony.

2. The Mask Festival

Every year the many language groups of East New Britain gather to celebrate the Mask Festival. Masks play a significant role in rituals and storytelling and are believed to be symbolic of spirits. Immerse yourself in mask culture and witness a spectacle of song, dance and costume. One of the highlights is the Kinavai opening ceremony where members of the Tolai clan arrive in canoes donning spectacular full-bodied masks to the skin-tingling sound of drums and chanting.

3. The Enga Cultural Festival

The outside world didn’t know about the tribes of the Enga Province until the 1930s, and the Enga Show was started to conserve and uphold the Engans' cultures and customs. Tribes gather in the thousands to chant, sing, dance and take part in centuries-old rituals.

4. Kenu and Kundu Canoe Festival

Canoes and kundu drums are a big part of life for the tribes of the Milne Bay Province, and this festival is a celebration of those things. Tribes come together to take part in a riveting race in traditional wooden canoes to the rhythmic beats of kundu drums – a sight bound to get your heart pumping a few extra beats! There are also art and craft displays and singing and dance performances from various regions.

Top 5 Kokoda moments in Papua New Guinea

1. village stays.

Days away from the outside world, the villages and villagers along the Kokoda Track have been able to maintain their customs, languages and traditions with little interference from the outside world.

2. Isurava Battlefield

Once a WWII battleground, now a moving memorial. The four pillars encapsulate the battle along Kokoda with the words: ‘Courage, Sacrifice, Mateship and Endurance.’

3. Mt Bellamy

It’s an arduous challenge to get to the track’s highest point, but at 7218ft (2200m) your efforts are rewarded with sprawling views across the Owen Stanley Ranges.

4. Fuzzy Wuzzy Friends

Thousands of Australian soldiers owed their lives to the actions of the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels and they’ve become legendary throughout the country. At Menari, we have the opportunity to meet with one of the remaining angels.

5. The Golden Staircase

The original stairs (built by Aussie soldiers) may no longer exist but the steep hill they climbed lives on!

Sitting amongst the South Pacific islands of Oceania, Papua New Guinea is home to one of the most culturally diverse landscapes on earth. Boasting hundreds of ethnic groups and no fewer than 852 languages, it can justifiably claim to be one of the most heterogenous countries anywhere in the world. Occupying the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, its cultural traditions can trace their ancestry back to one of the earliest waves of human migration, when the original settlers arrived from Africa some 45,000 years ago. It is estimated today that more than a thousand cultural groups exist in PNG, each cultivating its own expressive forms of dance, art and costume.

Aside from its remarkable human diversity, PNG and its offshore islands are also home to an incredible richness of animal life. Occupying the northern extension of the Indo-Australian tectonic plate, its resident wildlife have close genetic links with its larger neighbour to the south, with several species of marsupial mammals such as kangaroos and possums being found here and nowhere else. Many of the outlying islands are also abundant in indigenous flora and fauna unseen on the larger landmasses. Rich in rainforests, mangroves and swampland, the region also supports an incredible population of bird species, with over 780 recorded, of which 76 are endemic to the islands.

One of the last great adventures, Papua New Guinea takes you back to the golden age of exploration, where new discoveries are still waiting to be made.

Useful information.

Health and Vaccinations

There are no mandatory immunisations for travellers to Papua New Guinea though you should be up-to-date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A. Malaria is present in all parts of Papua New Guinea, so we recommend you seek advice from your local GP or travel centre as to the correct immunisations and preventative treatments.

Currency

In Papua New Guinea the official unit of currency is the Kina.

To check out the latest exchange rate for the places that you are visiting you can go to   www.oanda.com .

Cultural Sensitivity

On our tours we frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your tour leader will be able to advise you accordingly.

When travelling through Papua New Guinea please be aware   that the tribal areas mostly conservative and as such you   should dress respectfully .   Politeness and respect to elders is of paramount importance as is general pleasantries to any locals you meet. There are many local traditions and practise so follow the lead of your local guide   with regard to   your behaviour so as not to offend.

At Wild Frontiers we are very aware of the ethical impact tourism can have on ancient cultures. We realise that taking a group of tourists through such a region can have a negative impact on the lives of those who live there and on all our tours we therefore go to great lengths to minimise the negative and accentuate the positive…after all, there are also many good things that the tourist can bring.

To help this process we ask that our clients do not hand out pens or sweets to children. As one sign in Egypt emphatically put it, ‘Please don't make beggars out of our children!' No matter how well intentioned, in our opinion the doling out of free gifts fosters a ‘beggar mentality' that is ultimately extremely destructive to a society. In addition, we do not condone giving out money to beggars or ‘ students' .

However, we also realise that we are exceptionally privileged to be travelling in areas where most of the people have far less than us and that the desire to ‘help' can be very powerful. As a result, we ask that you refer to your trip itinerary for information on the Wild Frontiers Foundation which supports specific projects in the areas where we travel.

Language & Religion

Religion in Papua New Guinea is predominantly Christian, with traditional animism and ancestor worship often occurring less openly as another layer underneath or more openly side by side Christianity. The courts and government in both theory and practice uphold a constitutional right to freedom of speech, thought, and belief. A large majority of Papua New Guineans identify themselves as members of a Christian church (96% in the 2000); however, many combine their Christian faith with traditional indigenous beliefs and practices. Other religions represented in the country include the   Bahá'í   faith and Islam.

The languages of Papua New Guinea today number over 850. These languages are spoken by the inhabited tribal groups of Papua New Guinea, making it the most linguistically diverse place on earth. Its official languages are Tok Pisin, English,   Hiri   Motu and Papua New Guinean Sign Language. Tok Pisin, an English-based creole, is the most widely spoken, serving as the country's lingua franca

Time

PNG is 10 hours ahead of GMT.

Food and drink

The traditional diet of Papua New Guinea is largely vegetarian with the population relying heavily on taro roots, sweet   potatoes   and sago. Fruits are also considered a staple of the diet with bananas, coconuts, guavas, pineapples, watermelons,   papayas   and mangoes often accompanying meals. Pigs and chickens are usually cooked on special occasions while those who live on the coasts enjoy fish,   crab   and crayfish.

Traditional Papua New Guinean meals are based on indigenous ingredients that have been gathered in jungles or grown in home gardens, such as Chicken pot - chicken that has been simmered with mixed vegetables and coconut cream. One delicacy we hope to sample is Mumu, pork roasted in a traditional earth oven and is served with sweet potatoes,   rice   and vegetables. Other traditional dishes are Kokoda fish cooked with a lime-coconut sauce.   Kaukau   which is baked sweet potato. Sago from the sago palm is the starch used for making bread and puddings such as   Dia   – sago and bananas cooked with coconut cream.

In terms of drink most of the coffee grown in the PNG highlands is Arabica and is very good, although some locals drink Nescafe. Coconuts are plentiful and used as a local source of liquid refreshment. Local PNG beers from the South Pacific Brewery include SP lager known as a ‘brownie’, South Pacific Export and SP Gold, although there are newer trendier beers such as Niugini Ice. Wines and spirits imported from Australia are readily available in the larger hotels and restaurants although they do come with a price tag.

The Kokoda Track

Base Camp was an epic, challenging adventure - made all the better for our excellent guides: leader Hem, and assistant guides Mekh & Indra. Our safety and welfare was their #1 priority, and made sure we were looked after all the way! Spending time acclimatising, and enjoying the hospitality of the owners of the teahouses was a great experience. The scenery was just 'wow moment' every day, and we all made it to Base Camp with the exception of one (very important to train beforehand, as it is more likely you will make it the whole way) I would highly recommend Intrepid Travel for your Everest Base Camp trip!
