puebla mexico african safari

puebla mexico african safari

puebla mexico african safari

puebla mexico african safari

Such an amazing experience! I would recommend doing the drive thru because it's so much fun to see all these animals close up! It is such a beautiful experience and such a beautiful environment! They also sell beer inside and food in the walk in part of this safari! They also have a spotify playlist to listen to while doing the drive thru so you can learn a little bit more about the animals!

This place is amazing!! You literally drive through wild life in your car or if you didn't drive you can take a bus from the wild life park and tour it as well!! They have all the wild life as well as a little river ride. They have zip line and a small water park for the kids. We really enjoyed coming here and driving casually through this wild life park!! You have to make this one of your must see places!! Say hello to the Ostrich as you begin your drive through PS: bring lots of water and snacks or pack a lunch, they don't have much to eat inside.

This was the most fantastic safari sanctuary for animals and the closest I have ever come to these beautiful creatures. Take the VIP tour, it was well worth it! The staff are incredibly knowledgeable especially Joe, Noemi, and Checo. We dined on yummy, traditional-to-Puebla bread sandwich cemitas on the island (extension of the restaurant that you must cross a swinging bridge to reach) next to the monkeys.

Africam Safari is a beautiful zoo! The safari across the savannah is best done by personal car. The buses are too crowded.,The savannah is divided into zones .. environments you would find in Africa. The animals are out, free to roam and you can get up close as you drive from zone to zone. Then you enter the zoo where animals are in enclosures. I volunteer at our zoo in Phx and thoroughly enjoyed Africam.

Photo of Alexandra L.

Not worth the time for a foreigner. I guess it's okay for people who live there and need something to do, but do NOT visit Puebla and think you'll have to go there. The Safari is weak and the zoo is not all that. Meh!

Photo of Leslie H.

This place is very family friendly. Nice tours and faculty is very polite. Animals are most definitely not caged and its very nice to see them roam in a habitat for them. Do recommend going. Very nice place to relax as well. Gift shop is very nice as well. Great place for the kids to roam and play. 10/10

This is Africam Safari, Benito the giraffe’s new home in central Mexico

Housing nearly 2,000 animals, the zoo was the first ‘safari park’ in latin america.

A family drives slowly through the Africam Safari in central Mexico; July 25, 2023.

When one thinks of Africa, images of deserts, sand dunes and mile upon mile without a speck of shade may come to mind. However, in El Oasis de Valsequillo (Puebla, Mexico) a different African landscape unfolds. A tropical savanna climate with distinct seasons and a dense jungle awaits, ready to challenge adventurous explorers. Looking at photographs of this place, it’s easy to mistake it for Sudan or the Congo.

Discovering a tranquil oasis-like haven is no simple task — it often involves venturing to distant lands. But Carlos Camacho Espíritu knew about such a place near his Puebla birthplace. He bought the land and created a 500-acre (200-hectare) space called Africam (not a typo) Safari to provide a safe haven for wild animals. Founded in 1972, Africam Safari is not just a renowned zoo and nature preserve, but also the first safari park in Latin America. It houses nearly 2,000 animals, such as lions, bison, giraffes, lemurs and elephants. The newest resident of this incredible sanctuary is Benito , the giraffe from the northern border city of Ciudad Juárez.

Carlos Camacho, known to many as El Capitán , was born into extreme poverty in the city of Acatzingo (Puebla). At the age of 16, he traveled to the United States in search of the American dream but was immediately deported. He then settled in Monterrey (northeastern Mexico) and became a radio announcer. After saving some money, he made another attempt to emigrate north and successfully arrived in Los Angeles. Camacho soon got a job at a local radio station with a program for the city’s large Latin American community that was relegated to the pre-dawn hours. After many years living in the U.S., Camacho became a naturalized citizen. Later, he founded Mayo drug laboratories, now known as Laboratorios Camacho, with the aim of serving his fellow Mexicans.

Africam Safari

Camacho enlisted in the U.S. Army as an aviator, reached the rank of captain, and fought in the Vietnam War . “My dad was many things,” said his daughter Amy in a 2018 interview. “Film producer, actor and entrepreneur who owned pharmacies. But his masterwork is Africam Safari.”

Carlos Camacho married Louise Wardle, an American woman he met through correspondence. Wardle was learning Spanish and wanted to hear native speakers to improve her pronunciation. At the time, Camacho had the only radio program for Mexican migrants in the United States. Wardle fell in love with his voice and they exchanged letters for a year. Eventually, she visited him at the radio station in Los Angeles, and they married two years later. The couple had eight children, two of whom, Amy and Frank, took over the park after both parents had passed away.

In 1976, Captain Camacho was attacked by a tiger named Dientes (Fangs, in English) when some tourists ignored the rules and got out of their vehicle. Camacho jumped out to help them, but was attacked by Dientes. Although the wounds didn’t kill Camacho, inadequate medical care led to septicemia (blood poisoning) and he died five days later. His widow, Louise, took over the management of the park, but she died from a brain tumor four years later. The 17-year-old Amy was left to carry on her father’s legacy.

Jirafa Benito

Amy Camacho served as the CEO of Africam Safari for 40 years. She briefly worked in government (2011-2012) as the Secretary of Environmental Sustainability under former Puebla governor Rafael Moreno Valle, and passed away in 2020 from a stroke.

Her brother Frank currently serves as the CEO of the safari zoo. Previously, he was president of the International Elephant Foundation, and currently serves as vice president of the Latin American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums (ALPZA). Frank Camacho is overseeing the relocation of Benito, Mexico’s most famous giraffe. The 1,200-mile (1,900-kilometer) journey from Ciudad Juárez to Africam Safari should take 40-50 hours.

This is not Camacho’s first time managing the transfer of large, wild animals. In 2016, he relocated two female rhinos, Chacha 1 and Chacha 2, to the Ukumarí ecotourism and wildlife park in Colombia. He also oversaw the transfer of three African elephants, Maggi, Kim and Pirinolo, the latter being a five-ton specimen from Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar’s Hacienda Nápoles to Ukumarí Park.

Africam Safari is a Mexican wildlife conservation park located 16.5 km from the city of Puebla, where animals roam in controlled freedom and in captivity. It is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Africam Safari is the ideal place for people with an adventurous spirit. Here you can live with more than 5,000 animals of 450 species from all over the world.

This is a completely different experience from traditional zoos, as the visitor can enter the fascinating wild world through African-style trails, on a safari-style tour by car or in one of the buses offered by Africam Safari.

The one who will be observed by more than 10,000 eyes will be YOU.

There are several sections where you can drive among giraffes, antelopes, zebras, rhinos, deer, Bengal tigers and lions, among others, in lodges specially designed to resemble their natural habitats.

Seasonal night safaris are organized, with a dance show. It is also possible to organize camps for groups.

Thanks to the environmental and topographic conditions that have been sought for the life of the different species, their adaptation has been achieved and several of them have been able to reproduce inside the park.

Africam Safari Experiences Link

This safari is the only one in the American continent and one of the few in the world.

Captain Carlos Camacho Espiritu, was the creator of Africam Safari. Originally from the city of Acatzingo Puebla Mexico. Man of multiple dreams and achievements.

Carlos Camacho obtained in his youth the American nationality, so he did his military service in the U.S. Army and even obtained the rank of captain and even the title of aviator pilot, which led him to participate in the Vietnam War.

This knowledge of aircraft allowed him to make several trips to Africa in order to bring wildlife to his home in Los Angeles to begin to form a collection of different species, highlighting a Bengal tiger named Raja, which was his favorite, as it was raised by the poblano since he was a cub.

In the United States, Carlos Camacho Espiritu met and married Louise Wardle, with whom he had 9 children, who, due to their father's hobby, grew up among tigers, lions, bears, penguins and more.

After making his fortune, "El Capitán" returned to Puebla with his family and decided to acquire a large piece of land next to the Valsequillo Lagoon, where he kept the exotic animals he had captured on trips around the world in freedom, so when he realized the attraction his collection generated, he decided to create a zoo.

But this place was not like other spaces of the same kind, as he proposed that the animals could coexist and procreate in conditions similar to those they had in their habitat, an idea that finally came to fruition under the name Africam Safari, a combination of the words Africa and Camacho, on April 2, 1972.

On October 28, 1976, Captain Carlos Camacho died, but his work did not. T he descendants of that great man continued with the project; first his wife, Louise Wardle de Camacho, and after her death his eight children, who inherited from both parents an infinite respect and admiration for nature.

Africam Safari

Africam Safari is a Mexican safari park that was established in 1972 by Captain Carlos Camacho Espíritu. It is about 17 kilometers from the city of Puebla, Mexico.

Africam Safari is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).

History of the Africam Safari

Africam Safari started as a private animal collection owned by Carlos Camacho Espíritu, a veteran, pilot, radio host and businessman, who lived in Valsequillo, Puebla.

Camacho got the idea to create a park where animals could develop and reproduce their species in areas resembling their habitat in the wild. Camacho called this zoo prototype Africam, a portmanteau of Africa (continent where most of the species in the zoo come from), and his last name Camacho.

Safari Zone

Visitors to the park become immersed in animal habitats, which very closely resemble the wild. The animals roam freely and the visitors can observe them from their own vehicles or the park’s guided buses. Africam Safari has several habitats, including African Savannah, American steppes, Tropical Jungle, Mexican Forest, Tiger Lake, Lion Territory, and walk-through adventure zone.

There are approximately 2500 animals of 350 species that roam freely in a habitat that is said to encourage animal development and reproduction. There are signals next to the way that prevents the visitor from animal attacks, advising the visitor to close the window and not to disturb the animals.

  • Delta de Okavango: an area based on the Okavango Delta in Botswana, where most animals from the African steppes, savannah grasslands, Malagasy gallery forests, and Andean regions are found in the park. This section is home to reticulated giraffes, black-and-white ruffed lemurs, ring-tailed lemurs, African elephants, helmeted guineafowls, common elands, waterbucks, impalas, Egyptian geese, ostriches, nilgais, sable antelopes, llamas, mouflons, Barbary sheep, capibaras, Baird’s tapirs, and Asian elephants.
  • Oasis: this section is not based on a specific area in the world, it resembles an oasis in American rainforests. This section is home to military and scarlet macaws.
  • Desierto de Kalahari: an area based on the Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa, where most animals from Central Africa, India, and the Caribbean are found. This section includes white rhinoceros, Grant’s zebras, blue wildebeests, lechwes, Cape buffalo, black-crowned cranes, sarus crane, dromedary, black rhinoceros, and flamingos.
  • Serengeti: an area based on Serengeti in Tanzania, where only African lions are found.
  • Bakuli: an area based on forests in Bhutan, Vietnam, and India. This section is home to chital, fallow deer, scimitar oryx, Nubian ibex, and sika deer.
  • Huasteca: an area based on La Huasteca in San Luis Potosí, where animals from Mexican forests are found. This section is home to the American black bear, Coyote, white-tailed deer, collared peccary, and Canada goose.
  • Chitwan: an area based in Chitwan District in Nepal, where Indian animals are found. This section is home to Bengal tigers, wild Asian water buffalo, gaur, blackbuck, and chital.
  • Zona de Descanso (Rest Zone): an area where visitors are allowed to leave their vehicles to use the park services (restaurant, public toilets, gift shop, and snack bar). There are four exhibits where hippopotamus, chimpanzees, spectacled bears, and striped hyaenas can be found.
  • Yellowstone: an area based on Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming where North American species can be found. This section is home to American bison and elk.

Adventure Zone

The Zona de Aventuras (Adventure Zone) is a section in the park where vehicles are not allowed and visitors must walk to get in different areas. This section includes a butterfly zoo, a bat exhibit, a herpetarium and insectarium, a kangaroo exhibit, and a botanical garden.

  • X-Mahana: a garden and butterfly zoo inside a Maya-themed building where monarch butterflies are raised.
  • Jardín Botánico Louise Wardle de Camacho: a botanical garden that shows Mexican plant species, mostly regional cactus, agaves and a holm oak forest. Louise Wardle de Camacho was Carlos Camacho’s wife.
  • Tarántulas y Otros “Bichos” (Tarantulas and Other “Bugs”): is an herpetarium and insectarium that shows reptiles, amphibians and arthropods.
  • Caverna de Murciélagos (Bat Cavern): an exhibit that shows Egyptian fruit bats.
  • Canguros (Kangaroos): an exhibit that shows Australian species: red kangaroos, red-necked wallabies, and emus.

This section is home to giant anteaters, agouti, red pandas, Chilean flamingo peacocks, spider monkeys, Morelet’s crocodiles, prairie dogs, southern screamer, tufted capuchins, scarlet macaws, meerkats, African spurred tortoise, kinkajous, blue tegu, hamadryas baboons, trumpeter hornbills, highland guan, gray brocket, African porcupines, rhinoceros hornbills, gray Mexican wolf, Indian pythons, crocodile monitor, savannah monitor, squirrel monkeys, red-handed tamarin, horned guan, patas monkey, big hairy armadillo, great horned owl and black swans.

Nocturnal Safari

Conservation.

Captain Carlos Camacho Espiritu created Africam with the purpose of creating a community conscience about the protection of animals. It is one of the few such establishments in Latin America which includes white tigers in its list of animals.

Africam Safari was the first institution in Mexico to successfully assist reproduction of the golden eagle, which is pictured on the Mexican flag. The Safari maintains a captive population of the Tuxtla quail-dove and has been very successful in breeding this endangered species.

Other conservation programs in the wild in which Africam Safari is involved: a jaguar in the northern Mexican mountains, humpback whales in the Pacific Ocean, flamingos in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexican military macaw, sea lions off the Mexican Pacific Coast, a manatee in Quintana Roo, and many others.

Zoo Africam Safari

Visiting Africam in Puebla

That Time We Took Our Jeep on an African Safari in the Interior of Mexico

Africam Lioness on Old Jeep

Eric spent part of his childhood in Puebla, where we’ve spent the past 19 days. In fact, it was here that he learned the Spanish language before he learned English.

One of his fond childhood memories is of a place called Africam. At Africam, just outside the city of Puebla , you can drive your vehicle through an African safari experience (or take a taxi or tour bus).

An African safari almost 800 hours miles south of the U.S./Mexico border. Why not?

The Layout of Africam

Baby Zebra at Africam

You’ll buy your entry tickets at the gate: 232 pesos for 12 and up (equivalent to $12 USD), and 225 pesos for ages 3-11. Keep your receipt handy, as you’ll need to show it right around the corner as you enter the park.

The vehicle route through Africam is a continuous loop marked with arrows. You’ll drive through open ranges for the animals, with areas separated by gates. Drive cautiously, as animals commonly cross the road or even sit in the middle of it.

Africam Map

Along the route, there are two parking lots where you can stop and get out. The first stop is nothing more than a gift shop, snack bars, and restrooms. Everything here is identical to what you’ll see later, so you aren’t missing anything if you keep driving.

You’ll definitely want to get out at the second parking lot, where there are zoo exhibits of lions, hippos, and chimpanzees. We’ve never been so close to lions, who seem to enjoy entertaining the faces on the other side of the glass.

puebla mexico african safari

The final and largest parking lot marks the end of your visit. We were surprised to discover how big “Zona de Aventuras” is. It holds two restaurants, botanical garden, amphitheater for shows, gift shops, and a sizable zoo. You can easily spend a couple of hours here.

Kangaroo Kisses at Africam

We visited for the first time on a Friday afternoon, and there was hardly anyone there. It was awesome to be able to drive at our own pace and spend as much time as we wanted at the zoo exhibits.

The following Monday when we returned with my parents (who flew in from Texas to visit!), it was a mad house. Because people were off work for Constitution Day, a government holiday, most of the driving portion was bumper-to-bumper with frequent stops. On the plus side, all of the vendors were open and the zoo area felt more vibrant.

Which Animals You Should Expect to See at Africam

Entering Jaguar Exhibit at Africam

If you’ve ever taken a Kilimanjaro Safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, then you probably remember the graphic at the front of the bus, which names the animals you might see along the way.

Unfortunately, Africam has nothing of the sort. Consider it a test of your animal knowledge. We won’t judge if you make up a few names and facts along the way.

Fallow Deer at Africam

Here are a few of the safari animals we think we identified correctly:

  • Siberian tiger
  • Cape buffalo
  • American bison

When it comes to zoos and the like, I’m hypersensitive about living conditions for the animals. While it makes me sad to see small habitats for creatures accustomed to huge ranges in the wild, the animals at Africam appear to be well cared for.

Six Month Old Elephant at Africam

What spoke most strongly to me was the number of babies I saw, including a six-month-old elephant alongside two elephant two-year-olds. There was a young zebra, as well, still with its brown stripes. If animals aren’t thriving, then they won’t bear healthy young.

A Little History of Africam

puebla mexico african safari

And now for some interesting history behind Africam, taken from the official website, as well as Eric’s family members who have grown up in this area. Africam was founded by Carlos Camacho in 1972, who originally had a private collection of exotic animals at his residence. The “cam” in Africam comes from his last name.

In 1976, a Bengal tiger attacked a family that had gotten out of their vehicle. Camacho stepped in to help and was clawed by the tiger. He ended up dying when his wounds became infected.

puebla mexico african safari

Control of Africam passed to Camacho’s wife, and then to the couple’s eight children. The park has expanded widely and successively in the 30-odd years since Eric visited as a child. Back then, vehicles drove through an open area with the lions, and there was an official death toll that used to be reported on the news.

Nowadays, only the Siberian tiger gets an open pen.

Until next time, keep it dirty and wheels side down. ~ Eric, Brittany, and #LittleNomad

Benito the giraffe arrives at new home after year of solitude in Juárez

puebla mexico african safari

PUEBLA, Mexico (AP) — A 4-year-old giraffe named Benito arrived Tuesday at his new home in a large animal park in central Mexico. Now starts the hard part for the gangly post-adolescent: fitting in with the other giraffes in the neighborhood.

The 7.5-acre (3-hectare) enclosure at the Africam Safari park in central Puebla state already has seven giraffes, including three females.

Benito, who was transferred following pressure from animal advocates, has spent the last year totally alone at a dusty city park in the northern border city of Ciudad Juárez. As he enters adulthood, as with many species, he may have to quickly develop some social skills.

He currently is being held in a tall-roofed medical evaluation room at the park, after his 2,000 kilometer (1,200 mile) trip from Ciudad Juárez in a crate on the back of a flat-bed truck. The park wants to move him out to meet the rest of the herd as soon as possible, possibly within a couple of days.

“He has been alone for a long time, and it is going to take us a few days to introduce him to the rest of the herd,” said Frank Carlos Camacho, the director of the Africam Safari park. “But even so, we believe this is a very stable herd and that they will accept him.”

“It all depends on Benito, how he interacts with the herd,” he added.

Benito was seen on video sniffing around his new home and accepting a carrot from a park staff member Tuesday.

His new surroundings are a radical change.

In Ciudad Juárez, across the border from El Paso, Texas, Benito had little to do in his half-acre (0.2 hectare) enclosure; he ate a lot of alfalfa, a fodder usually given to cows.

In the border area's blazing hot summer, Benito had little shade, Photos showed him crouching to fit under a small, circular shade canopy. In the winter, ice sometimes formed in his enclosure's pond. There were few trees for him to munch on.

At the Africam park, Benito will start eating leaves from the acacia tree, one of the favorite foods of giraffes in their native habitat in Africa.

“Benito is going to be introduced to foods that are new to him, which are the ones his cousins in Africa eat,” said Camacho. “Even though Benito is not familiar with them, he's going to like them."

Giraffes reach sexual maturity around four years — Benito’s age, when many males separate from the herd and go looking for a mate — and can live to around 25.

More: Benito is escorted out of Juárez en route to Puebla, Mexico where his new home will be

“I am very pleased that Benito will be the next stud at Africam,” Camacho said.

The trip to the Africam Safari park, which started late Sunday, took around 30 hours, less than originally expected. The specially designed crate Benito was carried in was accompanied by a convoy of police, National Guard and media vehicles.

His transfer was achieved following a campaign by animal rights activists in Ciudad Juárez, where temperatures reached as low as 39 degrees F (4 degrees C) Sunday. They said the winter cold and summer sun, the small enclosure, diet and solitude just weren't fair for Benito.

Ana Félix, one of the leaders of the movement to get Benito a new home, said Benito's move was a victory that “we are going to continue celebrating for the next few days.”

But Félix notes that the job of animal activists isn't over: She wants to win a new home for Ely, an elderly former circus elephant held largely alone at a cement-ringed Mexico City zoo enclosure. The animal's strange, repetitive behaviors and downcast demeanor have earned earned her the informal title of "the saddest elephant in the world."

“We're going for Ely,” Félix said. “Let's support the activists, so that Ely can also get out of the confinement she is in now.”

Despite all his difficulties, Benito won many people's hearts in Ciudad Juárez.

“We’re a little sad that he’s leaving. but it also gives us great pleasure … The weather conditions are not suitable for him,” said Flor Ortega, a 23-year-old who said she had spent her entire life visiting Modesto, another giraffe who was at the zoo for two decades before dying in 2022. Benito arrived there last May.

Benito originally came from a zoo in the much more temperate climate of Sinaloa, a state on Mexico’s northern Pacific coast. Benito couldn’t stay with the two other giraffes there because they were a couple, and zookeepers feared the male would become territorial and attack the younger Benito. So he was donated to Ciudad Juárez.

At the Africam Safari park, the giraffes live in a much larger space that more closely resembles their natural habitat. Visitors travel through the park in all-terrain vehicles to observe animals as if they were on safari.

At his new home, it will be almost like life will begin again for him, Camacho said. “He’s ready to be a giraffe,” he said. “He will reproduce soon, and contribute to the conservation of this wonderful species.”
