The wonders of New Zealand require a visitor’s full attention, so why not give your eyes a treat and roll through the country on a scenic train ride ? Great Journeys New Zealand offers a brand-new collection of multiday, guided rail tours that sweep across spectacular landscapes on both North and South islands .

The just-launched rail adventures take three existing train lines and mix them with a fresh crop of guided tour itineraries — ranging from six to 17 days — leading guests on a variety of off-rail excursions in search of Kiwi experiences. The Northern Explorer train starts in Auckland and runs just over 400 miles south to New Zealand’s capital city of Wellington. Along the way, tours bring guests to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves and into Tongariro National Park, where they’ll see towering Mount Ruapehu. After crossing the 58-mile Cook Strait aboard the Interislander ferry, travelers can transfer to the Coastal Pacific train at Picton. The route passes through Blenheim’s vineyards and hugs Kaikōura's coast (renowned for whale sightings) on the way to Christchurch. Finally, the TranzAlpine train traverses the Canterbury Plains and the Southern Alps between Christchurch and Greymouth. Private coach or shuttle tours can whisk passengers to nearby destinations, including Queenstown and Milford Sound.

“Great Journeys New Zealand takes travelers through some of the country's most stunning and diverse landscapes, from rolling hills and lush forests to rugged coastlines and sparkling oceans,” says Mark Hockley, senior tour manager and partnership specialist at Great Journeys New Zealand. “The scenic routes provide panoramic views that can't be found by road, and the relaxed and comfortable train ride allows travelers to sit back, relax, and fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of New Zealand .”

Tour guides provide local insights and personal introductions. “There’s a story at every stop, from tales about Kiwiana culture to facts about New Zealand's curious birds, the history of Māori culture, geology in volcanic regions, rock formations, orientation of cities and locations in New Zealand, and so much more,” Hockley says. An audio commentary system, triggered by GPS, offers additional facts and historical background as the train chugs along. “The views really are breathtaking — from the volcanic peaks of Middle Earth in Ruapehu to sighting the mystical Blue Lake in the northern reaches of New Zealand's Southern Alps — but we also visit local stores and meet sheep farmers and winemakers, and hear their stories along the way,” he says.

“Māori storytelling and legends are woven into every guide's narrative throughout all trips — it's an important part of the New Zealand experience,” says Hockley. “We offer unique cultural experiences on many of our tours, ranging from visiting a Māori village to tasting Māori food, learning about Māori arts and crafts, and more.”

Scenic Class carriages are open and airy, thanks to panoramic windows and skylights, with spacious seating and airbag suspension for a comfy ride. Open carriages are also available — perfect for fresh-air viewing and photography. When you’re hungry, the onboard Scenic Cafe offers New Zealand wine and beer selections, along with dishes showcasing local ingredients, from roasted free-range chicken with Manuka honey to High Country lamb to South Island hot-smoked salmon salad. Starting April 14, Great Journeys will add Scenic Plus service , with a new, custom-built carriage plus a dedicated chef.

Tours are offered on specific dates from January through early May, and travelers can choose between Classic (six to 15 days, with a maximum group size of 35) or Signature (six to 17 days, with a maximum group size of 20).

Great Journeys of New Zealand - Signature Cities & Seas Tour - Day 1

Kia ora! Welcome to Auckland, New Zealand’s City of Sails! Auckland is known for its multi-cultural hub of food, music, arts, and culture. Your great journey will officially begin the moment you check into your hotel room. After reading your welcome letter from your Journey Director, head out and explore all that Auckland has to offer. This is the perfect opportunity to visit the Sky Tower or shop along bustling Queen Street. You may even fancy a drink in one of the charming bars or eateries of Vulcan Lane. After an exciting day on the town, join your fellow travellers as well as the Journey Director at this evening’s welcome reception.

Your accommodation: 4-4.5 Star Hotel

Great Journeys of New Zealand - Signature Cities & Seas Tour - Day 2

Your journey awaits as you join the Northern Explorer scenic train. Marvel at rural New Zealand’s lush landscapes from the comfort of your scenic carriage. From the sparkling waters of the Waitemata Harbour to the green pastures of the Waikato – you won’t want to miss a moment. Arriving in Hamilton, your coach awaits you to bring you to the famous Hamilton Gardens. Surrounded by beauty, you will learn about the history, context, and meaning of each garden. In the early afternoon, enjoy some free time in the heart of Hamilton before departing for an evening visit to Raglan – a seaside surfer town. It’s here that you’ll enjoy a Sunset Dinner Cruise on the pristine harbour.

Great Journeys of New Zealand - Signature Cities & Seas Tour - Day 3

This morning you will depart for your next exciting excursion – Maungatautari Sanctuary Mountain. Let your guide transport you into an ancient world of ecological wonders as you explore New Zealand’s very own pest-free environment, within native forest. On this excursion, you will walk through the home of some of New Zealand’s most endangered species. Discover North Island’s robins, tomtits, kākā, pōpokotea, bellbirds, hihi, tīeke, fantails, kereru and wētā. This pre-human paradise has one of the world’s longest pest-proof fences. Your expedition continues after a lunch stop in New Zealand’s “Kiwiana Capital”, Otorohanga. Make sure you capture a photo of the giant Kiwi birds! Next, discover the famous Waitomo Glow worm Caves and be dazzled by the seemingly star-filled sky as you glide by boat through this impressive cave formation. Tonight, explore Hamilton's riverside walks and shops on this free evening. Enjoy one of the many nearby restaurants as the sun sets over the Waikato River

Great Journeys of New Zealand - Signature Cities & Seas Tour - Day 4

Joining the Northern Explorer train once again, today you’ll soar over icy mountain streams as you travel to Tongariro National Park; the home of three volcanic mountains. Tongariro National Park has a diverse range of ecosystems and spectacular landscapes. In 1993, it was recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and was the first property to be inscribed with the criteria describing the cultural values it holds in the Māori people. Enjoy a mini excursion up to Tūroa ski field. Here you'll want to capture a panoramic photo of Middle Earth before descending into Ohakune. Tonight, enjoy a special dinner with your fellow travellers.

Great Journeys of New Zealand - Signature Cities & Seas Tour - Day 5

Today is free for you to discover one of the region's exciting excursions. Choose from the many optional activities on offer and personalise your perfect holiday. Perhaps you will hop aboard a rail cart journey or join a horse trekking experience that takes you along expansive hills, mountains, rivers and into the native bush. If you're after an active day, why not explore Ohakune’s historical cycle trail? Rent e-bikes and discover old viaducts, tunnels, old settlers’ camps and reclaimed native forests along the Old Coach Road.

Great Journeys of New Zealand - Signature Cities & Seas Tour - Day 6

Your day begins with an elevated experience up the northern face of Mt Ruapehu for panoramic views of the volcanic landscape. Drink in the views of Mt Ngāuruhoe, Mt Tongariro, and beyond across the central North Island. Joining the Northern Explorer train once again, you will wave goodbye to Ohakune as you settle into your uber-comfortable seat. Don’t get too comfortable though; dramatic rivers, gorges, and ravines are just around the bend! Stretch your legs and explore the open-air carriage to get the best view on the train. As you glide through rich green farmland and past dramatic coastline, enjoy the picturesque Porirua Harbour as you arrive into Wellington - New Zealand’s windy capital! You’ve arrived at Wellington Railway Station which is just a stone’s throw from downtown, the Beehive and Parliament Buildings. You won't want to waste a moment of time after checking into the hotel - your evening is free to explore this culinary capital from Queen’s Wharf to Cuba street and beyond.

Great Journeys of New Zealand - Signature Cities & Seas Tour - Day 7

The perfect day does exist – and it includes exploring Wellington! Today is free for you to experience vibrant Wellington as you please. Start by joining our Wellington City introduction tour and then head off to explore Cuba street’s cafes, bookstores, and eccentric shops. Get cultured at the Te Papa Museum or Zealandia to uncover the rich stories of Aotearoa New Zealand. You won’t get bored with the plethora of activities on offer. From urban eco-sanctuary, cable cars, botanical gardens, and more, the list goes on! Enjoy dinner tonight with your fellow travelers.

Great Journeys of New Zealand - Signature Cities & Seas Tour - Day 8

This morning you will say poroporoaki ki te motu raki (good-bye to the North Island) as you sail to the South Island, crossing the Cook Strait on the Interislander Ferry. As the shores of the North Island slowly disappear, settle down in the comfy seats in the Premium Lounge. Treat yourself to a mimosa and enjoy a hearty seafaring breakfast, but save some room for morning tea! On your journey across the Cook Strait you may spot pods of dolphins playing in the wake or, if you are very lucky, a whale. Don’t spend all your time inside – as you enter the stunning Queen Charlotte Sound enjoy the views as you cruise past the remnants of whaling stations, remote working sheep farms, pristine native bush and mussel farms. Admire the beauty of this coastal paradise as you arrive into the gateway of the South Island, Picton. Step off the Interislander Ferry and join your next world-class experience aboard a Marlborough Wine Tour.

Great Journeys of New Zealand - Signature Cities & Seas Tour - Day 9

The morning is yours to explore Picton. Meander through the impressive Edwin Fox- the world’s oldest surviving merchant sailing ships, the local craft stores, and coastal walks. Enjoy the waterfront cafés before boarding the Coastal Pacific train for another highlight rail journey through the Marlborough Wine Region. Today you will be travelling into Kaikōura. Relax as the train glides across remote beaches, between mountains and sea, on a timeless journey of breath-taking beauty. Keep an eye out for the fur seals lazing on the rocks! Once in Kaikōura, the evening will be yours to enjoy some iconic kai moana (seafood) at one of the quaint restaurants before enjoying your luxurious ocean-front hotel.

Great Journeys of New Zealand - Signature Cities & Seas Tour - Day 10

Today will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience of whale watching! Enjoy today’s thrill of an up-close encounter with the world's largest-toothed predator, the Giant Sperm Whale. If you would prefer to gain an aerial experience of the wildlife, why not request a plane or helicopter ride to capture the true grandeur of it all? After this outstanding experience, we're sure you will be feeling peckish. Head to the beach to sample some iconic New Zealand food - you can't go wrong with the humble Kiwiana fish and chips. Work off the deep-fried delights by wandering through the wonderful array of local artisan stores and souvenir shops. In the late afternoon, your journey will continue, once again, on the Coastal Pacific Train en route to Christchurch, or “The Garden City”. The spectacular scenery doesn’t cease to amaze as you journey south through the rolling hills and flat plains. Enjoy the relaxing journey with a glass of wine in hand from the scenic café. Enjoy a peaceful evening before hitting the town the following day.

Great Journeys of New Zealand - Signature Cities & Seas Tour - Day 11

Christchurch, the hub for South Island exploration, is also a wonderful city that blends modern architecture and technology with the 19th-century Anglican 'gothic revival' architectural influence. Often remembered for its earthquake in 2011, the city is rebuilding itself into a multicultural haven. Today you are free to explore the museums, Riverside Markets, Punting on the Avon, Gondola and botanical gardens. There is also a multitude of delicious cafés tucked into quaint side streets we're sure you will love. This evening, you will re-join your fellow travellers for a special dinner and a ‘final hurrah’ on Christchurch’s historic dinner tram. Enjoy a wonderful circuit of the city while indulging in fantastic conversation and seasonal cuisine.

Great Journeys of New Zealand - Signature Cities & Seas Tour - Day 12

Your journey will finish after breakfast. You will be transferred to Christchurch Airport for your departing flight.

This fabulous full day excursion also includes a journey along Ninety Mile Beach in a custom-built coach that moves effortlessly over the terrain of sandy beaches, rugged roads and quicksand streams.

Departing Rotorua, we cross the Mamaku Ranges and arrive into Hamilton where we board the Northern Explorer for our rail journey to Wellington. We view spectacular scenery through our carriage’s panoramic windows, including rocky coastlines, river gorges, dense forest, rolling green farmland, quaint towns and the spectacular peaks of Tongariro National Park. We also experience an amazing feat of railway engineering as we wind our way through the Raurimu Spiral. We arrive into Wellington early in the evening and transfer to the Copthorne Hotel Oriental Bay , for the next two nights.

rail tour new zealand

Wellington is New Zealand’s capital city, beautifully located within a hook-shaped harbour and surrounded by mountains. The city’s downtown area is relatively compact, making it easy to explore its many theatres, galleries and museums on foot. This morning’s orientation tour features the key sights within the city, such as the government buildings and Parliament House, as well as enjoying wonderful views of the city and its picturesque harbour from the top of Mount Victoria. Our free afternoon provides an excellent opportunity to explore Wellington further. A visit to Te Papa (New Zealand’s national museum) is highly recommended.

Christchurch, 2 nights

rail tour new zealand

We leave Wellington this morning and cruise across the Cook Strait to New Zealand’s South Island. Dolphins and sea birds can often be seen playing in the waters, and the scenery is truly magnificent as we enter Queen Charlotte Sound and reach South Island. In Picton, we board KiwiRail’s Coastal Pacific train, and from the comfort of our seats, we are in prime position to view lush native bush, soaring mountains, pretty coastal towns and the roaring Pacific Ocean, as we wind our way along this truly stunning coastline. On arrival in Christchurch, we transfer to the Distinction Hotel Christchurch , located in the heart of the city, for a two night stay.

 • Christchurch

centre of Christchurch, with classic shops on the high street

This morning, we discover Christchurch on an orientation tour, and witness its remarkable development since its devastating earthquake in 2011. Later we journey to the Waipara Valley, whose warm and dry summers, followed by cool autumn nights, make this region perfect for growing olives, lavender, hazelnuts and grapes. We explore this pretty area and sample its cool climate wines during a tasting and lunch in one of its wineries.

Breakfast and lunch

Franz Josef, 2 nights

rail tour new zealand

After breakfast, we experience South Island’s striking natural landscapes in all their glory as we journey between Christchurch and Greymouth on the TranzAlpine. Considered to be one of the greatest rail journeys in the world, we cross the patchwork fields of the Canterbury Plains, travel the edges of the ice-fed Waimakariri River, view miles of native beech forest and traverse the Southern Alps. Leaving the epic backdrop of the Southern Alps in our wake, we continue south to Westland National Park, and the Scenic Hotel Franz Josef Glacier , which will be our home for the next two nights.

 • Franz Josef

rail tour new zealand

A relaxing day to absorb the beauty of Franz Josef and the surrounding area at our leisure. Our Tour Manager will arrange a short journey into the Waiho Valley, where those who wish may take a short stroll through rainforest to a view point, to take in the glacial valley landscape. For those who want to experience a spectacular aerial view of the glacial valley and the nearby Alpine peaks, there is an opportunity to take an optional scenic helicopter flight . Timings of the helicopter flights are flexible to allow for the best weather conditions and visibility.

Queenstown, 3 nights

rail tour new zealand

South Island’s spectacular scenery never fails to impress. Today’s journey takes us over the Haast River Bridge and onwards via Clark Bluff and the shores of Lakes Wanaka and Hawea, to the Central Otago region. In the late afternoon, we arrive into Queenstown, situated within one of the most naturally stunning landscapes of New Zealand, on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by incredible mountains. Our next four nights are spent at either the Millennium Hotel or the Copthorne Lakefront Hotel.

rail tour new zealand

This morning, we visit nearby Arrowtown, a picturesque town which has lovingly preserved its heritage of two very different goldrush communities – Chinese and European. It’s a lovely place to explore on foot, with a well-preserved avenue lined with galleries, craft shops and cafes. We return to Queenstown and the remainder of our day is at leisure.

rail tour new zealand

A Freedom Day to enjoy our glamorous alpine setting as we please. From gentle wine-tasting tours in Central Otago to incredible walking trails, a cruise on the the iconic TSS Earnslaw or exhilarating jet boat rides and four-wheel drive excursions, there are so many ways to enjoy Queenstown’s beautiful scenery. Whatever you choose to do – enjoy!

Te Anau, Overnight

Group of people on the Kepler Walking Track, near Te Anau, New Zealand

Tour Highlight Today we travel to the magnificent Fiordland National Park and to Milford Sound, which will undoubtedly prove to be one of our tour’s many highlights. The scenic drive takes us through a variety of landscapes – farmland, native tussock grasslands, lush beech forests and impressive glacial valleys – before arriving at Milford Sound to begin our cruise. Only when out cruising on Milford Sound can the sheer scale of the dramatic scenery be fully appreciated: towering peaks rise all around and spectacular waterfalls cascade into the calm waters below. Our cruise takes in the impressive Mitre Peak and Bowen Falls. Remember to keep a look out for dolphins as well as seals and penguins. We spend tonight at the Distinction Luxmore Hotel .

Dunedin, 2 nights

Dunedin railway station, with victorian era architecture

This morning we say goodbye to Fiordland. A morning drive takes us via Mossburn and Lumsden to Gore. Fresh, green farm scenery will accompany us to Balclutha, which has a distinctive arched concrete bridge. Known as the ‘Edinburgh of the South’, Dunedin is South Island’s second largest city and is considered New Zealand’s architectural heritage capital, with its lovingly restored Victorian and Edwardian buildings. We have time to admire the beautifully landscaped trees and plants of Dunedin Botanical Gardens and the spectacular views of the Otago Peninsula and Harbour before we reach our hotel, the Scenic Southern Cross .

Two yellow-eyed penguins in native bushland, Otago Peninsula, South Island, New Zealand

This morning, we enjoy a sightseeing tour taking in the city’s neo-Gothic churches, town hall, opulent theatres and other 19th century buildings. In the afternoon, why not join an optional wildlife cruise to the Otago Peninsula? Enjoy uninterrupted views of the world’s only mainland colony of royal albatross. You may also encounter sea lions, blue penguins and Hector’s dolphins.

rail tour new zealand

The final part of our journey in New Zealand takes us north as we return to Christchurch. A stop is made in Moeraki to view a collection of huge spherical boulders which are scattered along a beautiful stretch of beach. Maori legend says that the boulders are gourds washed ashore from a voyaging canoe called Araiteuri that was wrecked when it made landfall a long time ago. Scientists have discovered the boulders are actually calcite concretions, created about 65 million years ago, which have been raised from the seabed and uncovered one by one by the elements. Our next stop is Oamaru, where we stroll through New Zealand’s best preserved Victorian streets. We arrive at the Distinction Hotel in Christchurch, where we spend our final two nights in New Zealand.

Christchurch Freedom Day

rail tour new zealand

A free day to spend as we please. Christchurch is a lovely city to discover, with the Riverside Markets, Christchurch Botanic Gardens and many galleries and cafes within easy strolling distance. Alternatively, an excursion to the nearby historic village of Akaroa is highly recommended. The scenic journey takes us via the stunning Banks Peninsula to the former French settlement of Akaroa, with its harbourside streets lined with arts and craft stores. We join a nature cruise around the harbour which features majestic scenery and an opportunity to discover the rare and playful Hector’s dolphins, native fur seals, penguins and many seabirds.

How to get around New Zealand by train

Travelling New Zealand by train is easy and it’s far and away the most scenic way to get around the country!

Many people don’t even realise that New Zealand has a functional passenger rail network but I’m hear to tell you that a train trip is a must-do on a New Zealand holiday. You’ll see sites that aren’t accessible any other way, like the stunning Raurima spiral, and you can avoid all the hassle of car parking and airport security.

If you’re planning your New Zealand trip and aren’t sure whether train travel is the way to go then scroll down for my pros and cons list.

train passing mount tongariro north island New Zealand

The intercity train network in New Zealand

Great Journeys of NZ is the main company running train services in New Zealand. They operate the main trunk lines running the length of the country (Northern Explorer, Coastal Pacific, TranzAlpine).

There are also some smaller networks around the Wellington Region (run by Metlink), Auckland Region (run by Auckland Transport), Otago Region (run by Dunedin Council) and between Auckland and Hamilton (run by Waikato Regional Council).

Where can you get by train in New Zealand?

Believe it or not, you can get nearly anywhere in New Zealand by train, with a few connections.

The main train routes are:

 • Northern Explorer: Auckland to Wellington via Hamilton and Tongariro National Park
 • Te Huia: Auckland to Hamilton
 • Capital Connection: Palmerston North to Wellington via the Kapiti Coast
 • Coastal Pacific: Picton to Christchurch via Blenheim and Kaikoura
 • TranzAlpine: Christchurch to Greymouth
 • The Victorian: Dunedin to Oamaru

The availability of trains on the North Island is better than on the South Island, mostly because there is more demand and fewer mountains in the way.

Unfortunately, there are no trains to Queenstown because no one has spent enough money to build tunnels through the mountains.

Booking New Zealand train tickets

For the Great Journeys of NZ trains, you can buy tickets at the website. You do need to buy online in advance as you can’t just show up with cash on the day. Tickets are released around a year in advance and can be bought up to the week of departure.

For the Hamilton-Auckland train and regional trains in Auckland and Wellington you can buy tickets at the main stations or using the pre-paid transport cards (AT-Hop in Auckland, Bee in Hamilton, Snapper in Wellington). Wellington and Auckland-Hamilton trains also let you pay on the train with cash but Auckland trains do not. Paying by pre-paid card is always the cheapest option.

How much does it cost to travel New Zealand by train?

Generally, there are two classes of tickets available: Scenic and Scenic Plus class. Scenic Plus is basically like business class on a plane with the main perk being better food. Scenic Plus isn’t always offered and can sell out quick.

Prices vary by route (shorter + cheaper) and time of booking (further in advance = cheaper), and travel time (weekdays are cheaper). Below are an indictaion of the current prices at the time of writing in Scenic Class.

Child, senior and student discounts are available.

Train tickets also don’t tend to go up that much so it can be cost-effective for last minute travel.

What to expect when travelling New Zealand by train

Train departures.

Train stations in New Zealand vary wildly from the beautiful historic Wellington Railway Station to simple platforms on a random street. They are generally super central though so you’ll find it easy to walk, bus or taxi there and find accommodation nearby.

Smaller train stations may not have an indoor waiting area so just be aware of that if the weather is bad.

Trains tend to run on time/very close to time. The exception is when you’re getting on partway through a bigger route (such as boarding at Kaikoura between Picton and Christchurch) and/or the weather is bad.

Regional trains can often be replaced by buses when there is bad weather or track repairs in progress so be ready for that possibility. Buses don’t typically take much extra time.

I recommend showing up 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time, or at least 30 minutes if you have luggage to check.

Food and drink on New Zealand train trips

There is a cafe car on board to Great Journeys of NZ trains that serves full meals as well as snacks and drinks (including alcohol). I’d describe the quality as slightly above aeroplane level. If you book a Scenic Plus ticket you get restaurant-style meals delivered to your seat

Other trains do not have food or drinks for sale but you can bring along any food of your own and eat it onboard.

Luggage on New Zealand trains

Great Journeys of NZ tickets allow you to bring two ‘carry-on’ and one ‘checked’ bag. The checked bag has to be checked in at the station along with any wheeled carry-on, while smaller carry-ons stay with you.

On the regional trains, you can take whatever luggage you like, but bear in mind these are largely commuter services so there aren’t many (or any) luggage racks.

Wifi on trains in New Zealand

Technically all trains have wifi but in my experience, it’s pretty terrible so if you desperately need internet on your trip you’re better off buying a local SIM. Even then, there is no reception on some of the remoter areas the trains pass through.

Types of trains around New Zealand

Great Journeys of NZ trains are designed for tourists so they have spacious carriages and lounger-style seats, typically with a 2×2 seating configuration in rows.

Regional trains have less comfortable seats, more like bus seats, in a mix of configurations, typically with lots of aisle space for standing or bags,

There are no sleeper trains in New Zealand, but none of the routes run at night anyway.

Pros of travelling New Zealand by train

 • Best way to see all the scenery as you travel
 • Train stations are central so you don’t have the hassle of getting to/from an airport.
 • No airport security or waiting around at departure gates
 • Much more comfortable than bus travel with spacious carriages and decent food

Cons of travelling New Zealand by train

 • It’s not the fastest way of getting from A to B (but at least as fast as the buses)
 • It can be very pricey for a one-way trip, especially if you travel in peak season (December – February).

Local tips for train travel in New Zealand

 • Book as far in advance as possible – The earlier you book the cheaper is the general rule.
 • Join the email list – sometimes they give you loyalty discounts or early access to sale fares.
 • If you’re a fussy eater then take snacks – the food selection onboard is ok but if you have dietary requirements you might struggle.
 • Take the opportunity to stop-off en route – just make sure to book your stop-offs when you buy the tickets, there’s no option to change plans on the day.

New Zealand is a drivers paradise, stunning scenery, leisurely speeds and easy navigable roads. Leaving Christchurch, begin the drive south. Watch the scenery and skyline become jaw-dropping with the Southern Alps towering over the horizon.

Mt Cook, locally known as Aoraki, is the highest mountain in New Zealand at 3,754m. The drive takes approximately 4.5hrs from Christchurch. At the foot of the mountain sits the village of Mount Cook - a comfortable haven in one of the most unforgiving parts of New Zealand. On every side, the Southern Alps scrape the sky. On arrival check in to your hotel and enjoy the alpine village. The nearby Hooker River is accessible to see huge glacier carved icebergs.

Approximate driving distance: 330km, 4.5-5 hrs

This full day walk in the ancient beech forest of the Mount Aspiring National Park starts with a scenic drive to the northern end of Lake Wakatipu and into the Routeburn Valley. The high snow capped mountains provide a magnificent backdrop for the walk up this beautiful river valley. A journey along the edge of the lake from Queenstown to the head of Lake Wakatipu is the ideal preparation for the splendour of the world-famous Routeburn Track. Your walk begins among towering ancient beech forest, climbing gradually through blankets of forest moss and fern and skirting the thundering Routeburn through the gorge it has carved over the millennia. The woodland eventually parts to reveal the rich grassland of Routeburn Flats, overlooked on all sides by cloud-scraping mountains, some so high they have permafrost and small glaciers. The flats is a pristine site for us to enjoy a well earned lunch, as is the next stop, Routeburn Falls, a short stride through more alpine forest. You and your guide will decide which point suits you best. Walking time: 3 to 5 hours (optional) Walking distance: 16kms (easy) Track: Well formed easy walking track (8km each way)

Day 17 Queenstown Wanaka

Today, make the short drive to Wanaka. The suggested route is via Cardrona Road along the Crown Range. The Crown Range road climbs to high altitudes and crosses a mountain chain the Cromwell route doesn’t. While the Crown Range Road is a shorter distance to journey between Queenstown and Wanaka, travel time is longer and the road is more challenging than the usual route through Cromwell. You should also allow time to stop and admire the massive views, which are often accompanied by amusing encounters with kea (mountain parrots). On arrival in Wanaka make your way to your hotel for check in and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Approximate driving distance: 80km, 1.5-3 hrs

Day 18 Wanaka Franz Josef Glacier

Leaving Wanaka, make your way up the western coast of New Zealand. This trip tracks down the West Coast through the breathtaking Haast Pass and to Glacier country. Fox Glacier and Franz Josef allow you to see two glaciers in one day. The Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers are unique relics of the last ice age. Mighty rivers of solid white, tumbling down ice-hewn rock valleys, they are classically beautiful in the glacial sense. Nowhere else in the world have glaciers advanced so close to the sea at this latitude. On arrival in Franz Josef make your way to your hotel for check in and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Approximate driving distance: 290km, 4.5-5 hrs

Day 19 Franz Josef Glacier Greymouth Christchurch

Continuing driving the West Coast until arriving in Greymouth. On arrival in Greymouth, drop your car at the Budget office before 12pm and check-in to the TransAlpine train to Christchurch. Your scheduled train departure time is 2pm and you must be ready to board 20 mins earlier. Considered one of the world's greatest train journeys, this journey you’ll see epic vistas, travel the edges of the ice-fed Waimakariri River, traverse the Southern Alps, and see miles of native beech forest.

The train has panoramic windows, open-air view carriage, a fully licenced cafe plus commentary allowing you to connect the scenery all around you.

World’s Most SCENIC Train Journeys That Don’t Cost the Earth

Posted: December 4, 2023 | Last updated: December 4, 2023

Slow and relaxing, train travel is one of the best ways of getting around if you have the time to spare. Some of the most breathtaking views in the world can be enjoyed from behind a train window and you don't necessarily have to shell out the big bucks for an epic journey. Here we take a look at the world's most scenic train journeys that you won't have to splash out on.

Christchurch to Greymouth, New Zealand

Taking in some of New Zealand's most dramatic landscapes, the TranzAlpine route from Christchurch to Greymouth travels through some of the most incredible sights on the South Island. The train crosses Canterbury Plains and travels alongside the Waimakariri River before ascending into the mountains where it crosses the Staircase Viaduct. One-way fares start from $117 and all the seats line up with the huge panoramic windows and roof skylights.

Perhaps one of the most stunning features along the TranzAlpine's route is traversing the snow-capped mountains of Arthur's Pass National Park. The scenery then quickly turns subtropical as the train continues its journey through the west coast's rainforests and one of the best experiences on the train is stepping out on the open-air viewing car.

Glasgow to Mallaig, Scotland, UK

Dubbed Britain's most scenic train route, the West Highland Line runs from the Scottish city of Glasgow to Fort William before continuing its journey towards the port of Mallaig. The journey traverses the Scottish Highlands' epic landscape and passes through the remote wilderness of Rannoch Moor. After a brief stop in Fort William, the train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct – the same bridge the Hogwarts Express crosses in the Harry Potter films.

For an even more authentic Harry Potter experience, there's the The Jacobite steam train – it's the one used in the movies. This year the train is scheduled to run Monday to Friday from early April to late October between Fort William and Mallaig. An adult return ticket costs $63. Otherwise, regular ScotRail trains run every day and one-way off-peak fare is around $38.

Kandy to Ella, Sri Lanka

One-way tickets from Colombo via Kandy cost $2.74 for a third-class reserved seat and $9.58 for a first-class ticket in an air-conditioned car. The train makes several stops along the way where locals sell fresh fruit and snacks right by the tracks.

Williams to Grand Canyon Village, Arizona, USA

The trip on the Grand Canyon Railway begins in Williams, a small town 30 miles (48km) west of Flagstaff. Peru is filled with exciting train journeys from the luxurious Belmond Andean Explorer to the much-loved tourist route between Cusco and Machu Picchu. For an unusual (and a more wallet-friendly) experience, travelers should choose the Ferrovías Central railway. Transporting passengers from Lima to Huancayo, the charming capital of Peru's central highlands, it's the second-highest passenger train in the world reaching a height of almost 16,000 feet (4,782m) as it travels through the Andes.

Lima to Huancayo, Peru

The trip takes 12 hours to complete and travels through the Nor Yauyos-Cochas Landscape Reserve, one of Peru's most important protected areas with breathtaking landscapes. Those keen to travel should plan the trip carefully as the trains only run twice a month. One-way fares start from $67.
