What a fun weekend we had! Booked this for the financé's birthday and we had a blast. The choice of breweries were great and the recommendations for after the tour were pretty awesome too! There were complementarity water and snacks during the tour (provided by the tour). Kelly was our tour guide and she was pretty cool and patient with the drunkies. I would definitely do this again!

This outfit does a solid job of presenting the local Richmond breweries! These guys are true advocates of the Richmond beer scene and a great community asset.

The concept is amazing; their delivery: leaves much to be desired. Upon arriving 3 mins before their 4:15pm start time, we walked into the downstairs of Capital to see the rest of the tour folks taking a drink of the 2nd beer sample. I politely ask the tour guide, "What beers were sampled today?" His response was a look of confusion, and he didn't know the beers that were sampled. Better yet, we were not even offered the samples. Strike 1. Everything seemed a little disorganized and that was made evident when the owner, not giving the tour this past Saturday, asks "Who hasn't purchased tickets yet?" We were immediately looked at and given the look, you're not going on the tour because you walked in last; regardless of the fact that we purchased our tickets over a month beforehand. Evidently, the company could not count the number of people on their own tour list to see that we had 2 people too many. A couple that was there on their anniversary date were asked/told they would not be going and they would be given an extra two tickets. Strike 2. Upon getting on the bus and rolling over to Legends the group we were with was a solid group. We were all joking and having a good time. At Legends everything was a little chaotic and not organized at all (definitely not a shock after our start). It was nothing beyond the standard Legend flight, that was poured and half the time the tour guide pouring didn't know what was in the pitcher (Pale or IPA, he did not know). Really? Also, we were told nothing about the beers that were being poured, were given no tour or description how they brew there, nothing. Strike 3. Next up was Midnight Brewery. We arrive and find out there is some beer festival going on; interesting. We get inside and the guide has no idea what is going on. 5-10 mins later he walks around and hands us all a $5 beer coupon and says, "They are not doing samples due to the event." Ok. So my group and myself proceed up to the pouring area and talk to the bartender. Super nice and points out that most of the small brewery owners were there hanging out. So, the bartender knows more than our guide, awesome! We get introduced to the owner and was ask him to give us a tour. He was very welcoming and then introduced us to Neil Burton, the founder of Strangeways (where we were heading next). A huge thumbs ups for Midnight! Tour company: strike 4. We get to Strangeways and everything was. . . . unorganized/chaotic. Surprised? Me either. They give us a few samples to taste, and were nice. We again, heard nothing about their brewing process, did not see the brewing room, nothing. The beer was tasty, no question. Strike 5. This tour needs a major overhaul for it to be worth it. At $65 a ticket, this was one of the biggest wastes of $130 we had spent on a night out ever. I'm not one to bash a company, but for the 3 places we went (I'm not counting Capital since we didn't get any samples there) we could have gone and asked for a tour, had a few samples and spent half what we did.

Thank you for taking part in Richmond Brewery Tours and the helpful feedback you provided on Yelp. I'm glad you agree the concept is amazing and most all our past participants would agree. I sincerely apologize you took part in what was by far the perfect storm of the least desirable tour we've ever conducted and I take full responsibility for your experience. To provide some background, our company is in its infancy and approaching 5 months in operation. We are constantly working to refine our product and services offered. For example we launched an online booking system for our customers a few weeks before your online purchase. A new system I blame my user error on the overbooking which occurred on your tour. (First and last time it will happen). Your tour guide was a new employee conducting his first public tour, which is why I was present in the background to take notes on his service. Our tour guides preparation, customer service and inability to take leadership at each of the breweries has been given immediate attention. To summarize our services, Richmond Brewery Tours gives you the opportunity to experience the beers, atmosphere and culture of each individual brewery visited. We provide a background on beer, factoids on Richmond's past and current beer scene, snacks and water on the bus, one behind the scenes brewery tour (dependent on staff availability) and arrive back safely departing with a Richmond Brewery Tour souvenir. You obviously did not receive the summary of our services. I hope you'll give Richmond Brewery Tours a second chance and provide us with the same constructive feedback. Thanks again for your comments. Sincerely, Tommy Founder, Richmond Brewery Tours

We did the tour July 10th with Collin and had an awesome time seeing Capital Ale House, Strangebrews, and Arden. The company was friendly, the breweries interesting, and Collin was exceptionally informative and attentive. Kudos to that man for really going above and beyond. I would definitely repeat the experience and recommend this trip to my friends.

What a fun night!!! I rented the Richmond Brewery Tour bus for my boyfriend's birthday and we had a blast! Tommy was great to work with and our driver Jay was both informative and a ton of fun..(maybe I should mention patient and tolerable as well!! )We started off at COTU with a tasty, generous tasting and little history of the brewery in a private room in the back. We then headed to Hardywood for another generous tasting and private tour then over to Isley for more personal attention and more beer! We are all still talking about the great time we had on the brewery tour. I would HOP on Board again anytime!!

Photo of Katie R.

I bought tickets for this tour as part of my sister's bachelorette party. We had so much fun and I couldn't believe what an amazing deal it was! We went to Triple Crossings, Hardywood and Strangeways. The beer was delicious and our guides were knowledgable. Bartenders at the three spots also answered questions although Hardywood was slammed due to food truck Thursdays. I would certainly recommend this tour to anyone and am looking for another excuse to go again!!

Photo of Ashley E.

Had a great time! Tommy, our tour guide was great! We actually got to tour two breweries which was very exciting and all of the breweries were so passionate about the beer and excited to show us around. We had a private group of eleven people and everyone in the group thought it was amazing!

My wife and I spent this past weekend in Richmond and booked a tour online. We received no confirmation and began to get nervous when the day of the tour arrived and we still had no idea if our tour payment was received. We decided to send an email and call RVA Brewery Tours to confirm but only got voicemail with no returned call. We decided to assume our tour was good to go and arrived at Capital Ale House at 400pm. Upon arrival the Capital Ale House staff told us to stand to the side and wait for the tour guide to arrive. After 5-10 minutes of standing around we found out that the rest of the tour group was downstairs and proceeded to meet up with them. (You would think with 4-5 tours given per week the capital ale house staff could have given us this information rather than give us this blank stare upon our arrival). As for the remainder of the evening, it went great. Jay, the tour guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and had a great personality. The beers were very good and overall we had a great experience.

Photo of Brett H.

This was my first time on the official Richmond Brewery Tour. I didn't quite know what to expect. We arrived at Capital Ale House and met up with the rest of the group. Our guide gave us a brief history of beer and let us know our schedule for the evening. We visited Strangeways, Isley and Hardywood. Each stop included three or four tastings each. Our guide, as well as the staff at each brewery, were friendly and informative, as well as very accommodating. There was water and snacks available on the bus. We got to hook up our phone to the stereo so we could pick our own music to listen to on the trip. There was even some trivia from the guide with prizes on the way. When we stopped at Hardywood we were lucky enough to have the head brewer give us an in depth tour of the facility so that was a nice bonus. We were unable to tour the complete brewing process at the others but were still able to enjoy the great beers and even some live music. I would recommend this tour if you are interested in tasting the beer bounty of Richmond without having to worry about driving, while also receiving some inside information on the city's great beers. I hope to take another tour and visit some of the other new breweries. I heard that this tour also visits Licking Hole, Midnight, and COTU upon request. Also Triple Crossing and Ardent Craft Ales will be offered soon as well. All the more reason for me to get back on board. Cheers!

Apparently, things have gotten better. We all met up at Capital Ale House on a busy night.. The staff laid out the tour and gave us two high- gravity beers to get going. From there we loaded up the bus with beers and headed over to Legend. The flight was diverse (lager, brown, pilsner, IPA, and hopfest) our server ran down the descriptions and we order up some food. From there we headed to Strangeways and were greeted by a lovely bartender duo of Allison and Cheyenne (sp?). The beers were awesome and we got a behind the scenes look at the operation and brewing process. Feeling good, our Tour headed to Hardywood. It happened to be a huge night for them in releasing the ginger bread stout and our groups received a flight of beers and the ability to purchase the coveted gingerbread stout while the public waited In line for hours to receive their stout. Our guide was informative and fun and we finished the night back at capital ale. Overall we took home a set of growlers and some good stories. Thanks for the good times!

RVA on Wheels

Located in the historic Columbian Building in downtown Richmond’s Shockoe Slip, Segway of Richmond brings a full line of world-class personal transporters for guided tours of downtown Richmond, Segway rentals and individual purchase.

"We have lived in Richmond for 13 years now and Saturday was the first time we took this tour. Our guide was personable and knowledgeable. She had done quite a bit of research on her own, and she added those learned tidbits to our tour. She has inspired us to get out and explore and learn more about the city and it's history. This is a great tour to introduce your out of town guest to Richmond. The tour was about 2 hours. In that time we went from one end of Richmond to the other. We had used a groupon coupon for our fare. But I have to say, even without a coupon the fare will be worth the experience."

–jane m - Richmond, Virginia

"We took the Grim tales and Ghost tour Friday night. We had a great tour. The host was very knowledgeable of the area and told great stories about the buildings you drive by all the time and don't have a clue about their significance. "

-Dolphindelight - Richmond, Virginia

"Great guide and expert driver. Everyone on the trolley had a good time with all the highlights of the Richmond area on full display. Well worth the time for visitors and native Richmonders alike"

-Patricia Ballinger

"We hired RVA Trolley to provide transportation for our wedding guests to/from our ceremony/reception as well as to separately drive our wedding party around downtown Richmond for photos after our ceremony. All of their drivers were incredibly professional, on-time, and stuck to our decided upon routes. Hendley, our coordinator, was easy to work with, prompt with communication, and able to answer all of our questions. The trolleys definitely added a personal touch to our wedding and provided a great photo opportunity for our party and guests alike. While driving around on the cobblestones downtown wasn't the most comfortable, this unique experience is something we are definitely glad we pursued and would highly recommend to anyone else for events in the RVA area. 7 Must-Try Richmond Breweries | Best Richmond VA Breweries

By: Author Igor Jovanovsky

Sharing is caring!

Richmond’s craft beer culture is booming these days. The metro area is home to more than 30 breweries. If you’ve had a long day at the beach and the sun has exhausted you, a cold draft beer at one of the many breweries at Richmond is refreshing for your soul.

Many of the breweries have received national recognition and awards. All of them are a convenient drive from anywhere in the region; just explore as you drink your way along the newly expanded Richmond Ale Trail.

If you’re looking for the best one, it really is up to a person’s taste, as all of them offer top-quality beer. Especially now that summer’s here, definitely go ahead and have a draft beer to refresh yourself from the heat.

When done with the ale-ing, dine at some of the best restaurants in Richmond . Besides great beer, Richmond offers amazing food too!

Table of Contents

7 iconic richmond breweries, väsen brewing company.

3331 W Moore St // +18045885678

Open for just over two years, Väsen has quickly attained national recognition. Named for the Swedish term for “inner essence,” the brewery reflects the Scandanavian heritage of its founders, who use the Norwegian yeast Kviek to ferment several of its beers. Outside some traditional perennials, the beer rotation at Väsen is “a perpetual cycle of funkiness” with sours, farmhouse ales, and wild beers.

It is a small craft brewery that focuses on making new beers. It also has a guest tap with the best of the season’s breweries – only served on special events like Kveik Fest.

The brewery is only open 6 days a week (No Monday Brewing :(), but that doesn’t mean you can’t sample the goods at your leisure. Just get an Uber and pick up some cans to go. This would be a great starting point for your Richmond brewery tour.

The Answer Brewpub

6008 W Broad St // +18042821248

The Answer Brewpub brings together a unique menu of Vietnamese food and craft beer in a space that takes its design cues from the local industrial warehouses that once housed the many brewing operations that started the Richmond beer scene. Amid its beer tanks and fermenting rooms, founder Mekong An’s family-style cooking is fit for two- or twelve-person groups, whether you’re seeking some pork belly sticky rice with a crisp Hopland IPA or vegetarian Banh mis with a sour Apricot Ale.

Located in the historic Manchester district, The Answer Brewpub is nestled where the James and Appomattox Rivers meet. Here, you can sample a selection of Richmond’s locally-made beers, as well as their own brews. The Answer has been recognized by the New York Times for its world-class hospitality and craft beer.

7 Best Richmond Breweries: Craft Beer

Three different styles of house-brewed beers are on tap at all times. You’ll also find homemade sandwiches, a few rotating taps, wine by the glass, and a full bar. Along with the made-from-scratch menu, chalk art and local art adorn the walls of this neighborhood joint. The outdoor patio is pet-friendly.

The answer to Richmond’s craft beer craze is here! Located in the historic district of Jackson Ward, The Answer offers an ever-expanding draft and bottled list of craft brews. With over twenty high-top tables and ten booths, there is plenty of seating to enjoy pints, flights, burgers, nachos, and a small plate from their kitchen.

The Veil Brewing Company

1301 Roseneath Rd // +18043555515

Veil’s brewers have gained a wild reputation for their creations, from an Oreo stout to a fried chicken beer. The brewery is built upon teamwork, with brewers rotating on and off of each recipe as every beer demands full collaboration. Stop by to taste the experimental side of Richmond’s thriving brew scene!

Located in an old mattress factory, Richmond’s deceptively large breweries are constantly pumping out sour ales in the three-year-old Funkhaust taproom. Try their locally famous Tigerlily sour ale or the lesser-known Aquaticus, a barrel-aged Berliner Weisse.

At the core of brewer Caity Heger’s beers are nuanced layers of flavor, experimental combinations of unfamiliar ingredients, and love of sour beers. With no flagship beer to her name and a constantly rotating array on tap in the new Funkhaust Cafe just outside the brewery doors, there’s always an exciting new beer to try at this Richmond brewpub.

What do you do after opening your own brewery? You build a sprawling space to showcase all those wild fermentation beers that the laws of supply and demand make impossible to sell anywhere else. Veil Brewing Co. has built an unstoppable juggernaut in Richmond, not just in sales and distribution but also in quality. Its beers are so good that you can even comfortably keep it on your shopping list of breweries to visit while out of state.

Three Notch’d Brewing Company: RVA Collab House

2930 W Broad St // +18045544100

The first beer Three Notch’d ever made was the virgin trend – a copper-colored, German-style altbier that was brewed in collaboration with James Creek Brewing and Starr Hill. This year, after five years of being brewed at the other breweries, Three Notch’d finally have its own space – about four miles away in a renovated warehouse just off Main Street in Richmond.

7 Best Richmond Breweries German-Style Beer

Featuring multiple Virginia breweries, what’s on tap ranges from the familiar to experimental. “We try to do collaborations with restaurants, bands, or cafés,” says head brewer Bo Hicks, “but even with our own beers, there are always a lot of other people involved.” Currently highlighted is a collaboration with RVA Bike MS that will help contribute money to ending multiple sclerosis. A portion of the proceeds from the Blood Orange, Sweat, and Gears gose (named for components of a bike) go toward this endeavor.

Each bottle is unique, with pieces of artwork created by local artists and contributors. The artwork will tell the story of Soul Blis’s creation, as each piece shares memories from the creative process. Each label has been hand-numbered out of 100 total.

Triple Crossing

113 S Foushee St // +18044951955

With six beers on tap, including a rotating beer-of-the-month, Triple Crossing’s focus is on creating excellent beers. They’ve got roots in Belgian styles, but they aren’t afraid to throw American hops into the brew – or even barrel-age their product to make it extra tasty. With a great beer garden that opens at 4 p.m. daily and features live music most weekends, Triple Crossing is an excellent stop in Richmond’s Scott’s Addition neighborhood.

With three production breweries, each with its own distinct features and brews, it’s no secret that Triple Crossing is a destination for beer lovers. The brewery itself is a place you can grab a pint or a flight, while in RVA, you’ll want to check out the menu at the attached restaurant ––the Neapolitan-style pizzas are made in the pizza ovens you see behind the bar. And if you’re visiting the brewery in Covington, enjoy our lager program and dozens of barrel-aged rarities.

Brewed in the “smash beer” style of “one beer, one hop,” Falcon Smash comes with a big aroma and a 7.0 percent ABV. The IPA features delicious Falconers Flight hops and the expressive house yeast. It’s tropical and piney, with a hint of orange marmalade. “I never feel more like a pilot than when I’m drinking one of these,” says brewer Jesse Houck.

This is a can’t miss Richmond brewery.  You’ll never be double-crossed at Triple Cross.

Hardywood Park Craft Brewery – Richmond

2410 Ownby Ln, Richmond // +1 804-420-2420

Hardywood has live music every Friday and Saturday night and plans more regular festivals featuring local and regional performers. They’ve also been hosting occasional pre-parties for area festivals such as Brewgrass or the more recent Virginia Beer Festival. It’s building a reputation based on a constantly evolving selection of beers that change with the seasons.

Richmond has always been a brewery town, and it’s just now becoming the beer city that it is destined to be. And Richmond was brewing their own beer back in the 1700s. The result of their labors is a production brewery with an inviting tasting room that feels like home, and Hardywood has come a long way in the past three years in quantity, quality, and place in the industry.

The barrels brew serious beer, including Hardywood’s signature cream stout with hints of coffee and chocolate and its summer seasonal, Raspberry Tart wheat ale. The new brewing floor also includes a French oak foeder fermenter, which will allow the brewery to make wild ales using wild yeast strains from West Coast breweries.

Stone Brewing Tap Room – Richmond

Stone Brewing Co.’s East Coast distribution center and brewery quietly opened on a Friday afternoon in 2016. The California-based company began selling its beer through distributors. Enough beer is being produced to supply distribution in nine states (Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia) as well as wholesales for the company’s retail operations in Richmond.

7 Best Richmond Breweries: Beer

The bistro features wood-fired brick ovens and locally sourced ingredients for a farm-to-table culinary experience. The Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens has a capacity to employ about 150 people and serve more than 450 patrons.

Stone Brewing, the 10th-largest craft brewer in the country, has a 24-tap bar, which is housed in an 8,000-square-foot warehouse with huge indoor and outdoor seating areas. The Richmond brewery location offers more than 50 types of Stone beers on tap at one time.

Richmond is a place that will take you on a selection of brewery tours so you can drink the freshest, most wondrous beer you’ve ever had.  On your tour, you will see what goes into making your beer and then get to drink it straight from the tap.

Whether you are from Richmond or were just passing through, people leave very happy after a visit to the Richmond area’s breweries. You’ll find everything from an amazing Black IPA to DIPA’s and English bitters inside their walls, and they won’t disappoint.  Help yourself plan your next adventure to these spots with my review.

  • amandapK6073CF 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles First of many outings with RVA Brew Crew! We booked the bus for a private tacky lights tour with neighbors and had an absolute BLAST! When we got on the bus there were lights, decorations, and of course Christmas music. And then when we sat down we discovered not only did we have koozies ready to go in our cupholders, but Santa hats too! The bus is well laid out and comfortable and our driver, Terry, was very accommodating for stops and music requests. :) 10/10, would highly recommend and definitely see us going out again! • Miranda S 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A must do! I could write a novel about how wonderful this company is! Months ago I took on the task of organizing a moms day out. The group wanted to visit Charlottesville wineries and I felt overwhelmed by the options and planning. Enter Lola! From that initial email, everything was easy, accurate and really just perfect. Finding a date and booking was simple. The RVA Brew Crew team made calls (saving me time and frustration) to see which wineries would take a group of our size (on a busy Saturday, without private rooms or adhering to a strict schedule) and would allow the bus. Really all we had to do was show up. The bus was clean and adorable and our driver was courteous, knowledgeable and so friendly. I honestly cannot day enough good things. The group had a blast and we are already anticipating our next adventure on the bus. This was just perfect and everyone in our group cannot stop talking about how fun and seamless the day went.
