Live reviews

We drove 2 hours to see them, and it was well worth it, they sounded great, to see them play all the killer songs and the new guitar player puts on a great show. Then after the show they were hanging out and we met them got a pic and they were super nice and appreciative of everyone coming out on a Tuesday night.

Before the show, the band took the time to meet and greet and sign auto's, which is awesome!! The boys delivered an awesome set, and tore through the classics! Sacred Reich is a class act.

Byzantine could not make it, as the bus broke down in Toronto.... Sacred Reich more than made up for their absence.

'This is magical': Beloved Phoenix metal band returns with their first album in 23 years

sacred reich tour history

It's been 23 years since Sacred Reich released an album. And Phil Rind, the bassist who's fronted the Phoenix metal legends since before they thrashed their way to international acclaim with 1987's "Ignorance" and the "Surf Nicaragua" EP, is thrilled to be returning to the new-release racks with "Awakening."

"It feels incredible," he says. "The most exciting thing ever. I know it sounds cheesy, but in so many ways, this is magical, the way everything came together and the process and the days that we spent in the studio, how positive and fun and easy everything went. It felt like this is what we should be doing. This is who we are."

As to what inspired them to get back in the studio at this point, Rind says, "Well, the songs came back. This whole time, we just didn't even have any songs. Somehow, the songs came back and we were like, 'Wow, we have songs. We should go make a record.' I don't know what changed. But I'm not here to argue with it."

The first sign of renewed activity arrived in April with "Don't Do It Donnie," the Trump-bashing Sacred Reich side of a limited-edition split single with Iron Reagan.

"It just came real fast," Rind says. "And it felt very punk rock. It's saying, 'Don't kill us all in a nuclear war,' like just a warning. 'Please, don't screw everything up beyond recognition to where we can't put it all back together in four years when you're gone. Just don't make such a mess that we can't fix it.'"

'These guys are still relevant'

"Don't Do It Donnie" was never really in the running for "Awakening" — in part because, as Rind says, it's so topical, "it kind of dates the record" and, in part, because it didn't really fit stylistically.

Its thrashy hardcore punk vibe seemed a perfect fit for that split single Iron Reagan had suggested, though.

"The universe was pushing for it," says Wiley Arnett, the only other holdout from the early days of Sacred Reich. "These are a bunch of 25, 30-year-old guys in a punk-rock world who do well on their own on tour. We did five shows with them, got turned on to their crowd, released a single with them and watched our Instagram get bumped up with their followers. It was almost saying, 'These guys are still relevant. We like these guys.' It was a way into the room. Now we're following up with our metal."

There were certain expectations they knew longtime fans of Sacred Reich would bring to their new album and they felt an obligation to acknowledge that.

"One thing we talked about," Rind says, "was that we felt it was important to have some fast, heavy songs to acknowledge the people that have been with us since 'Ignorance' in 1987 — the fans that have been there for us the whole time and made all this possible. So we didn't want to forget that. The trick is knowing that you want to do something like that but not forcing it, right? Just letting things occur naturally. And fortunately, it worked."

Arnett points to the comments on the first two videos they shared on YouTube from the album.

"They say, 'Oh, thank God. I was afraid they were going to do a whole record like that single they released,'" Arnett says, with a laugh. "This is totally different production. Totally different vibe. Totally different everything. That single was recorded for the B-side of a punk-rock record."

There are moments on the back half of "Awakening" where, as Arnett says, "We would immediately know that it wasn't the most crushing metal thing in the world, but we liked it."

So they'd talk it over.

As Arnett says, "We're sensitive to the fact that there's an expectation of us and wed like to deliver. We don't want people to be disappointed. But we can't let it steer the boat."

They recorded the album at Platinum Underground in Mesa with producer Arthur Rizk (Code Orange, Cavalera Conspiracy) and John Aquilino of Phoenix metal veterans Icon, an early source of inspiration on Arnett.

A whirlwind and a world tour

Rind joined Sacred Reich in 1985, taking over on bass for Mike "Lurch" Andre. At the time, they had a singer named Dan Kelly. But as Rind recalls, when it came time to make a demo, Kelly, who was old enough to have his own apartment, didn't want to pony up his share.

"He's like, 'I don't have any money to do that,' because he had bills to pay and we all lived at home," Rind says. "And we're like, 'Yeah, you gotta pitch in.' But he wouldn't do it."

So Jason Rainey, the rhythm guitarist who founded the band, made Rind their singer.

"I would sing at practice," Rind recalls, "because I wrote the words. I knew the words. I was only one that knew the words. And Dan would be working or something and couldn't show up to practice. So Jason's was like, 'Screw it, you sing.'"

By that point, Greg Hall had already replaced founding drummer Ray Nay. And shortly after Rind became their singer, guitarist Jeff Martinek quit and was replaced by Arnett.

"He joined the band and the next thing you know, we had a song on Metal Blade's 'Metal Massacre VIII' compilation and they offered us a record deal," Rind says. "That was 1987."

Rind says he recently stumbled across a copy of their first recording contract.

"I was 17 at the time, so my mom had to sign it because I was a minor," he says, with a laugh.

After making "Ignorance," they set off on a four-day world tour.

"We played Cleveland, Detroit, Toronto and Cincinnati," Rind recalls. "And then we made 'Surf Nicaragua.' The label was like, 'EPs never sell.' And we were like, 'We have these songs and blah, blah, blah.' Within a week or two, it outsold our first record. Then we started touring. And the rest, as they say, is whatever happened to us."

So, what happened to Sacred Reich?

What happened to Sacred Reich is that they ended up recording three more albums — "The American Way," "Independent" and "Heal" — before packing it in at the turn of the century.

When they got back together after six years on hiatus in 2006, it was with all four members of the classic '80s lineup — Rind, Arnett, Rainey and Hall. And it stayed that way through a tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of "Ignorance" in 2017, which included their first U.S. dates in more than 20 years.

They parted ways with Hall last year and split with Rainey early this year for health reasons.

"He had some physical challenges and health stuff," Rind says. "For a long time, we were like, 'OK, let's keep going.' And when it came time to record, it was just obvious it wasn't gonna work. It wasn't happening. And it was heartbreaking. It's just sad. But we had to keep going."

Hall was replaced by Dave McClain, the drummer who replaced him in the early '90s and quit in 1995 to join Machine Head, who he left this year to rejoin Sacred Reich.

Rainey was replaced by Joey Radziwill, the only member of the current lineup who can safely say the only Sacred Reich studio album released in his lifetime is "Awakening."

The 22-year-old guitarist sat in on the demos they recorded while McClain was still doing Machine Head.

As Rind explains, "Joey's dad, Tim, plays drums and said, 'You know, I have a little studio. If you guys want to work on the songs, I can play drums and we can record at my place.'"

Then, he added, "My son plays guitar."

When it came time to record the album, Radziwill already knew the songs.

"But we were like, 'He's 22. He doesn't want to hang out with a bunch of 50-year-old guys,' you know?" Rind says. "Then, on the second day of recording, it became so obvious that he was our guitarist. How he performed, how easily he fit in, just his attitude and everything, it was just perfect."

So they asked if he would join.

As Rind recalls, "That was a wonderful day to tell Joey, 'We've been watching you record for two days and it's obvious that you're the new guitar player in Sacred Reich.' And he's like, 'What?! Did that just happen? I've had a poster of you guys on my wall since I was 8.' And, you know, Joey's mom was at a Sacred Reich show at the Mason Jar when she was pregnant. So maybe Joey was always destined to be in Sacred Reich."

As for McClain, as Rind recalls, "When I told Dave, 'Hey, Greg's not in the band anymore,' he said, 'I want to do it. I want to do the record and the tour,' And he was still in Machine Head. That record hadn't even come out yet. But he said, 'I always hoped there would be another time that I could be in Sacred Reich. You're, like, one of my favorite metal bands.' And when he said that, I thought, 'Wow. You're in a big band.' I wouldn't even think he would be thinking of us. I don't know. Regardless of whatever happens, it's been a really special experience for us."

The day they showed up to record, Rind broke the news to Rizk that Rainey was no longer in the band and said "It’s gonna be OK. Don't worry."

They had put off the decision to record with Radziwill instead as long as possible, Rind says, "because we were hoping up until the last minute that everything could work out. But it was obvious it wouldn't. John was like, ‘You know, a lot of bands, that would be a thing that would destroy everything,’ He’s like, ‘Wow, you guys just took everything in stride and kept going.' So it all just came together. And it's really been an incredible experience. We’re doing what we should be doing. We're just really lucky."

An optimist talking politics

Rind's lyrics always have been socially charged and thought-provoking. As Hit Parader responded to their Metal Blade debut, "Intelligence and metal are two things not normally associated with each other, but in the case of Sacred Reich, they blend to form a powerful musical message."

There are no shortage of songs taking stock of our current political climate on "Awakening," as titles like "Divide and Conquer," "Killing Machine" and "Revolution" would suggest.

But there's also a prevailing sense of optimism coloring his world view these days.

"Look, things are gonna change," Rind says. "When I look at my younger kids, I'm like, 'You’re smarter, you’re kinder, you're more accepting. We’re all gonna be OK. There’s nothing to get too alarmed about.' What did Winston Churchill say? ‘For myself, I am an optimist; it does not seem to be much use being anything else.'"

When it's suggested that a certain number of their longtime fans who could probably still shout along to every line on "Ignorance" and "Surf Nicaragua" may have drifted by now to the opposite end of the spectrum from where they were politically in those days, Rind laughs at the thought that that would be an issue.

"Do we care? Absolutely not," he says. "Zero. Like, what are we gonna do? Tailor our lyrics? Either you’re gonna be honest and call it like you see it and talk about things you feel are important or you’re gonna be worried about what people think. ... And if people don't like it, so be it."

One of the key lines on the album is in "Manifest Reality," where Rind sings, "Be the change you want to see."

It's how he views the world.

"It's up to us," he says. "No one is coming to save us. And it's not enough to talk about it. An intellectual idea is great. But if you don't put it into practice, it has no real value, Be the change you want to see. Be the example. Everything you need is already inside you. The truth is already inside you. How many billions of people are on the planet? If we weren't all inherently kind and goodhearted, the place would really be a mess. It would really be a (expletive) show. And it's not. I mean it’s certainly not perfect. And there's other parts of the world where they have it much harder than we do. But this is the greatest time to be alive. And here we are. It's wonderful. We all just have to do our part. And we can."

Sacred Reich announce UK and European tour

Sacred Reich reveal run of November and December tour dates in support of Awakening - their first studio album since 1996’s Heal

sacred reich tour history

Sacred Reich have announced a UK and European tour which will take place next winter.

The thrash veterans will play a total of 28 shows, which are set to begin in Copenhagen on November 8 and wrap up on December 14 in Munich.

Sacred Reich have organised the shows in support of their upcoming record Awakening – which is expected to be released this summer.

It’ll be the band’s first studio album since 1996’s Heal and will feature former Machine Head drummer Dave McClain, who returned to the Sacred Reich lineup in December . He previously played with the group between 1991 and 1995.

Frontman, Phil Rind says: “Recording is in full swing with producer Arthur Rizk at The Platinum Underground in Arizona.

“We are so excited to be back in the studio after 23 years and Dave is currently killing it on the drums. It sounds sick! Our new record, Awakening , is due this summer. Stay tuned!”

In addition to the live dates in the UK and Europe, Sacred Reich will hit the road across North America this spring with Iron Reagan, Leeway and Enforced and also have several festival appearances booked – including an appearance on Megadeth's Megacruise.

Sacred Reich ‘s latest release,  Awakening  (2019), showcases everything a fan would expect and hope for from the Phoenix, Arizona unit: a timeless collection comprised of blistering thrash, crushing grooves, meticulous solos, and socially conscious lyrics. The return of Dave McClain, who manned the drum throne from 1991 to 1997, and the addition of twenty-two-year old guitarist Joey Radziwill, alongside original members guitarist Wiley Arnett and vocalist/bassist Phil Rind, are integral facets of the record.  Awakening  was produced by Arthur Rizk ( Power Trip, Cavalera Conspiracy ), engineered by John Aquilino, and mastered by Maor Appelbaum ( Faith No More, Halford, Armored Saint ). SACRED REICH To Begin Recording New Album In 2023

In a new interview with Ireland's Overdrive , SACRED REICH frontman Phil Rind was asked if he and his bandmates have commenced work on material for the follow-up to 2019's "Awakening" album. He responded: "We probably have four to five to nine new songs in the works, and we actually were looking into booking a studio to record, but things didn't work out that way. We're excited to finish up [our European] tour [with SEPULTURA ], and then I'm guessing that in 2023 we'll eventually get back into the studio and start recording a new album."

Rind went on to say that the material that has so far been written for SACRED REICH 's upcoming LP is not yet ready to be performed live. "At the moment, they are just demos and ideas," he explained. "It's far too early to let anyone hear them, especially on this tour. We need to do a lot more work on them before we get to that point."

Phil also talked about the overwhelmingly positive response to "Awakening" , which marked SACRED REICH 's first LP in 23 years.

"It's interesting because being in a band, playing the old stuff night after night, that's fine, but being able to bring in new material that slots in so nicely alongside the older tunes… well, that really gave us a shot of adrenaline," he said. "Since then, we've become more of a forward-thinking band. We have new stuff to play, and as the tour grew, it was really fascinating to see the music grow with the audience night after night. That was a real eye-opener for us, and it also felt really good. That was back in 2019 when we went out as headliners for a bunch of U.K./European shows. Having our new material make that connection with people, that was just insane to see. I'd not experienced that feeling in decades prior to that tour. That whole tour really changed our focus as a band."

"Awakening" was released in August 2019 via Metal Blade Records . The LP was produced by Arthur Rizk , who has previously worked with CAVALERA CONSPIRACY , POWER TRIP and CODE ORANGE , among others. The album marked SACRED REICH 's first release since the return of drummer Dave McClain .

"Awakening" was described in a press release as "a timeless collection comprised of blistering thrash, crushing grooves, killer solos and socially conscious lyrics that demonstrate a true understanding of everything that matters most in the world today."

"Awakening" was engineered by John Aquilino and was mastered by Maor Appelbaum .

In 2019, SACRED REICH guitarist and founding member Jason Rainey exited the band for "health reasons" and was replaced by Joey Radziwill . Rainey died in March 2020 of an apparent heart attack.
