What does the padlock icon in your internet browser mean?

This is the one Google wants to change in Chrome. Traditionally, it indicates that a website uses HTTPS, the more secure version of the HTTP (or Hypertext Transfer Protocol) that’s the universally agreed way of delivering webpages. It means extra security and extra encryption.

The padlock is used to represent HTTPS universally across Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and other browsers, and in those browsers, you can also click on the icon to access more details about the site and more related options (to clear the cookies for the site, for example).

So why the change to an icon showing sliders? Google says the padlock is less needed now (95 per cent of the web uses HTTPS), and that it can give users the idea that a site is trustworthy, which isn’t always the case: HTTPS indicates a secure connection, not a trustworthy website.

How to use the share icon in your internet browser

If you use Chrome, you’ll see a share icon in the address bar, an arrow pointing upwards out of a rectangle on the right (other browsers put their share options in the menus). Click on it to copy the current URL, send it to Chrome on another device, or cast its contents. You’re also able to generate a QR code for the website URL or save the page to disk.

Puzzle piece in Safari URL bar even when extensions are off on iPad

Recently I noticed the extensions puzzle piece in my Safari bar on iPad but the only extension I have is off. It goes away if I delete the app the extension belongs to but comes back when I reinstall it. This seems like a bug. I don’t have this problem on other devices and from what I read it should only appear when at least one extension is on.

Just on iPad? I don’t see it on iPhone. It seems to be new behavior too as this app has been installed for years.

The behaviour that you describe is as expected.

For iPadOS, if App extensions are installed on the device, the puzzle-piece icon will appear within the Safari Address Bar; if the associated extension has been enabled, an additional icon may appear - as shown here:

The behaviour in iOS for iPhone appears to differ - in that the puzzle-piece icon is only visible if an installed extension has been enabled:

In this example, for the identical Safari extension, the “JS” (JavaScript) icon is not seen.

Whether or not this is a bug, or by design of the two different (but related) User Interfaces is unknown - but has been consistent throughout the iOS/iPadOS15 lifecycle.

It's not a bug. The extensions icon will appear if you have any apps installed that you can enable extensions on.

What Does the Padlock in My Browser’s Address Bar Mean?

Sometimes that little padlock in your browser’s address bar changes color, gets an extra symbol layered on top of it, or turns into text. Its basic function is pretty obvious: a normal padlock means the site is safe, while a warning symbol or message means it’s not safe, right? Actually, it’s a bit more complex than that, since the padlock only shows you whether your connection to the site is encrypted with HTTPS and doesn’t provide much insight at all into whether the site itself is legitimate and/or completely secure.

In a word, a normal padlock icon lets you know that you’re safely connected to the correct site.

What the “secure” padlock doesn’t tell you

For those of you not up to speed on SSL certificates, they’re digital proofs that the site you’re visiting was registered with a certificate authority by the person or company that owns the site. These entities can opt to pay for a more expensive certificate (an “Extended Validation” or “EV” certificate) that checks to make sure they really are who they say they are (e.g., Amazon.com is owned by the Amazon.com corporation), but pretty much anyone can get their hands on a normal SSL certificate for free without proving anything beyond their ownership of the site.

So while your connection to the site is safe from prying eyes, the site could easily be run by someone sketchy who will take all your safely-transmitted data and do whatever they want with it. Even if the website is being honestly run, though, an encrypted connection means nothing if one of the parties receiving the data is compromised. HTTPS only covers data while it’s being transmitted, so if it gets to the other end and gets stored on a server with poor security or some other fatal flaw, it’s vulnerable.

Bottom line : the padlock means you’re on a safe connection, not a safe website.

All those other padlock symbols

While pretty much every browser uses some form of a closed gray padlock to denote an encrypted connection, different browsers show you different icons depending on what issues they detect on the site you’re visiting. Here are a few you should know:

The changing faces of the padlock

For quite a long time, most browsers made the padlock a pleasant green color as an indication that the site you were visiting was standing out from the rest by following good security practices. Now, however, HTTPS has basically become the standard, with over fifty percent of the top million sites using it, and the lock has gone gray to indicate that sites that use it aren’t really that special – they’re just upholding the standard.

In the future, Chrome may actually remove the padlock altogether and only notify users when the site is insecure, as a good webpage should be using HTTPS anyway. Even if your page doesn’t process any sensitive information, Google’s search algorithm rewards sites that use encryption, so it’s in every site owner’s best interest to set up an SSL certificate . It might not be a user’s first instinct to check for a padlock, but if they ever see something odd or a warning message in the address bar, they’ll probably think twice before entering any information.

Apple’s latest iOS release comes with an all-new Safari design that places the address/search bar at the bottom of the screen by default. But you can switch back to the classic iOS Safari design with a top bar. Here’s how to change the iOS 15 Safari address/search bar on iPhone.

Apple made its way through multiple iterations of the new iOS 15 Safari design and with the sixth beta , it included the option to switch between the bottom address/search bar and the classic iOS Safari top address/search bar on iPhone .

The official iOS 15 public release also includes the classic bottom menu bar instead of packing all of Safari’s buttons into the unified address/search/tab bar.

How to change iOS 15 Safari address/search bar on iPhone

• Running iOS 15, open Safari on your iPhone
• In the bottom address/search bar, tap the “aA” icon on the left (when on a website)
• Tap Show Top Address Bar
• Tap the “aA” icon in the top address/search bar
• Choose Show Bottom Tab Bar

Alternatively, you can also change the iOS 15 address/search bar by heading to the Settings app > Safari > swipe down and choose “Single Tab.”

Apple has updated Safari’s design in the latest iOS 15 beta (Developer Beta 6), making the address bar look and act more like what users are used to and giving you the option to put it at either the top or bottom of the screen. Safari’s redesign, especially on iPhones, has been controversial since it was first announced , but it seems like Apple is starting to walk back the floating design that’s persisted throughout the beta.

MacStories founder and podcaster Federico Viticci has posted screenshots of the new design on Twitter, showing off the changes. If the user chooses to have the address bar on the bottom, it sits above a row of controls, including back and forward buttons, a share button, and the tab button. (In previous versions of the beta, these buttons were one with the address bar.) If the user chooses the option to have the address bar at the top, Safari will look similar to how it did in iOS 14.

Apple has been tweaking and changing Safari’s new design since it made its debut in the first beta. The updates have been relatively small — buttons were added back into the address bar (making it a minefield of touch targets), and Apple made the address bar easier to get to when you’re typing in a URL or search term . However, the incremental updates haven’t appeased those calling for a return to a more traditional design, one that doesn’t include a floating element that hovers above a webpage’s content.

Options should help please those who (kind of) liked the change, and those who didn’t

The option to change where the address bar resides should please those who thought its new place at the bottom was a good one (regardless of how its actual design was executed), as well as those who prefer to have it at the top. It may make things tough for web designers, who will have to deal with the possibility of something butting up against either the top or bottom of their webpage, but it’s a nice option for users to have.

According to Viticci , the iPad version of Safari hasn’t changed with this update, though Apple introduced an option that more or less let you go back to a traditional design in Beta 4.

iOS 15 Safari Guide: Tabs, Extensions, Search Bar, and Other Changes

Apple's Safari app has undergone a number of changes during the iOS 15 beta testing process. Apple started out with a radical new design that moved the address bar from the top of the app's interface and introduced a floating tab bar, but after a multitude of complaints, there were several redesigns that culminated in an option to undo the iOS 15 design entirely.

Design Changes

Safari started out with a new floating tab design that moved the address bar and tabs to the bottom of the iPhone interface, but now the design change is optional.

You can get to webpage settings by tapping on the Aa, or reload a page by tapping on the reload button. With this Tab Bar interface, when you scroll through a webpage, the entire Tab Bar collapses down so you can see more of the website. You can bring it back up with a tap.

If you choose "Single Tab" instead of "Tab Bar," the address bar and tabs will remain at the top of the Safari window, which is how iOS 14 works. The design of the Single Tab option is unchanged from iOS 14, with the same control bar available at the bottom of the interface. You can't swipe through tabs using the Single Tab interface and will instead need to use the Tab Switcher.

You can swap between the bottom Tab Bar and the Single Tab interface by tapping on the "Aa" button that's next to any URL.

To make a Tab Group, just open up all of the websites that you want to include, tap on the Tabs button with the down arrow, and then tap New Tab Group from [#] Tabs. You can also use this option to create a New Empty Tab Group that tabs can be added to later. Long press on any open tab (or the main address bar if you have the single tab view enabled) to add it to a Tab Group.

To load up a Tab Group, tap on the Tabs button and then tap on the name of the group in the list. All of your Tab Groups sync across your devices so you can access them on iPhones and iPads running iOS and iPadOS 15 as well as on Macs running macOS Monterey.

Tab Overview Grid

In iOS 14, all of your open tabs are displayed in a card-like interface that you can swipe through, but in iOS 15, open tabs are displayed in a grid view.

Customizable Start Page

Safari is more customizable in iOS 15, and you can edit what's available on your start page. This is a feature that has been available on macOS, but is now also available on iOS devices.

You can choose to have the start page show Favorites, Frequently Visited sites, Shared With You content, Privacy Report info, Siri Suggestions, Reading List, and iCloud Tabs.

There's an option to use the same Start Page appearance across all devices, and a toggle to upload the background image of your choice.

Normally websites have access to this data and combined with cookies, can use it to build a profile of your preferences.

The Safari Settings You Should Tweak Right Now

Your browser is your window onto the world, the app you rely on most during the day. You want to wring every last drop of usefulness out of it. It definitely pays to know all of the features and tricks your daily browser is capable of. For iOS users, that means mastering Safari: how to stay safe online, how to get stuff done faster, and more.

For a smoother online experience, take a few minutes to run through these Safari tweaks to make your life online a little smoother.

Safari is very concerned about the strength of your passwords—perhaps even more so than you are. To see whether you're using any weak passwords, or duplicating passwords across accounts, open the Safari menu and choose Preferences then Passwords . A yellow exclamation mark indicates a potential problem with one of your listed passwords.

You'll often want to carry on watching a video while doing something else, and Safari can help—with a video playing, click and hold the audio icon in the address bar, then choose Enter Picture in Picture . The pop-out video player can be repositioned and resized as needed, but keep the original tab open in the background while you work on other tasks.

Websites want a lot these days: access to your webcam, your mic, your location , and more. To check what a site does and does not have access to, click Safari then Settings for This Website . You can revoke any permissions you've previously given, stop content from auto-playing, and limit the number of pop-up windows that the website can show.

It's taken a long time for Safari to support favicons (the little icons that represent websites), so you might as well take advantage; they also help you identify open tabs more easily as well. From the Safari menu, choose Preferences then Tabs , and then tick the checkbox labeled Show website icons in tabs to apply the change to the browser.

Having access to your recent browsing history can be useful for retracing your online steps, but you don't need it to follow you around for years. Open Safari then Preferences , switch to the General tab, then open Remove history items —you can delete browsing logs automatically after a day, week, fortnight, month, or year.

By default Safari just shows the domain name of the site you're visiting in the address bar, but this can make it tricky to work out exactly where you are on the web. To see the full URL instead, you need to open up the Safari menu, then the Preferences dialog, then switch to the Advanced tab—make sure the Show full website address box is ticked.

No productivity hack is ever going to beat an intuitive keyboard shortcut or two. You'll find a full list for Safari here and here , but some of our favorites include Space (and Shift+Space ) to scroll, Cmd+W to close a tab, Ctrl+Tab (and Shift+Ctrl+Tab ) to scroll through open tabs, and Cmd+L to jump straight to the Safari address bar at the top.

Safari, like every other Apple app, can be fully controlled with your voice in macOS Catalina. To enable the feature, open the Apple menu then choose System Preferences , Accessibility , Voice Control , and Enable Voice Control . It lets you speak out numbers for menus and links, zoom in and out, and much more—there's a full list of commands here .

Safari has an entire Develop menu that's not displayed by default but which is very handy for power users. To show it, open the Safari menu then choose Preferences , then Advanced , then tick the box marked Show Develop menu in menu bar. The new menu then appears, enabling you to access options such as disabling images or extensions.

Clearing out a browser's cache can often improve performance in the long term, even if it takes a short-term hit while local files are refreshed and reset. To do this in Safari, you first need to enable the Develop menu (see the step above), then you can open it and choose Empty Caches . This wipes all of Safari's temporary files and data off the local disk.

Safari has borrowed a very useful feature from Windows: the ability to "snap" open tabs to the left or right of the screen, so you can compare two side-by-side. Open up the Window menu, then choose Tile Window to Left of Screen or Tile Window to Right of Screen to do just that—your other windows are then automatically docked on the opposite side.

Apple devices all play wonderfully well together, as long as you're signed in on the same Apple ID, and jumping between open tabs on different devices is a breeze. To do this on Safari on macOS, you need to click on the Show tab overview button in the top right corner; you'll then see Safari tabs from your other devices listed lower down.

Who has time to read everything during the working day? No one! So make use of Safari's built-in Reading List tool. Use the Plus button on the left side of the address bar to add articles to the Reading List, then click the Show sidebar button (or View and Show Reading List Sidebar ) to bring up the list of all the posts you've saved during the day.

Safari gives you more control than you might have realized over the buttons and options that appear on the toolbar—having the tools you use most often in easy reach can make a big difference to your online productivity. To make changes, select View then Customize Toolbar , then just drag and drop the icons you need most often into the toolbar.

If you use Safari as the default browser on your Mac, you should take some time to customize the Safari toolbar to improve your productivity.

Safari on the Mac features a minimal interface. Although you don't have a lot of room for customization or theming, you can change the toolbar buttons to suit your productivity style. Here's how to make the Safari toolbar look and work the way you want it to.

By default, the Safari toolbar shows all your enabled extension icons along with the URL bar and navigation buttons.

If you have a lot of extensions, you might want to hide some from the toolbar. You might also want to disable the Sidebar button or the Share button if you're going for a cleaner look.

When you go to customize the Safari toolbar, you'll find a new set of buttons that you can add to the toolbar. Shortcuts such as iCloud Tabs, Top Sites, Home, History, Bookmarks, Zoom, Mail, Print, Web Inspector, and so on.

Life and works

Though very few details of his life are known, tradition does give a basic outline. Andrei (commonly Andrew in English) went to a monastery, called Holy Trinity Monastery, at a young age and grew up there. He was greatly influenced by St Sergius of Radonezh , the igumen of the monastery.

Eventually Andrei decided to become a monk , and with the blessing of the new igumen of his monastery traveled to another, the Spaso-Andronikov Monastery , founded by St Andronik ( June 13 ). There he was tonsured a monk and began to study iconography under Theophanes the Greek and a monk named Daniel.

The first known reference to his work appeared in 1405, when he is said to have written icons and frescoes in the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Moscow with Theophanes and another iconographer named Prochorus. In 1408 he and Daniel, his fellow monastic, painted frescoes in the Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir. Finally, he and Daniel were asked to paint the new church of Holy Trinity Monastery , where Andrei had grown up, after the monastery was destroyed by Tatars in 1408. This was about the time that he painted the only surviving icon credited as entirely his work - the Trinity , or Hospitality of Abraham .

Andrei Rublev reposed at Andronikov Monastery on January 29, 1430. He was one of nine saints glorified by the Church of Russia at its council held June 6 - 9 , 1988.

How to Put Safari's Search Bar Back on Top in iOS 16

Have you been stewing because Safari’s address bar seems to have disappeared from your new or upgraded iPhone with iOS 16 ? As you have probably already figured out by now, the address bar didn't go away completely. When Apple introduced iOS 15, it moved the address bar from the top of the window to the bottom. This is probably the most annoying thing about Apple’s default settings for Safari. Fortunately, it’s easy to move it back.

Before you move it, it's good to know that the bottom-positioned address bar has one possible advantage: It lets you scroll left and right between your open tabs. If you go back to the old top-of-window address bar, you'll need to tap the tabs icon at the lower right to open the page that displays thumbnail images of all your open tabs and tap on the one you want. That thumbnail view is an advantage, however, if you keep a lot of tabs open, as I do. It's easier to pick the tab you want when you can see the previews rather than scroll right and left in a mad hunt.

If you want to go back to the top-of-the-window address bar, Apple gives you two ways to do it, one in Safari and the other in the Settings app.

How to Move the Search Bar in iOS 16: Safari Method

The easiest method is to move the search bar from within Safari itself. 

• In the address bar at the foot of the screen, tap the AA icon at the left end. If you don't see it, swipe down to scroll up on the open web page, and it should appear.
• From the popup menu, tap Show Top Address Bar. The address bar moves instantly. 
• If you want to move the address bar back to the foot, tap the AA icon again, which is now at the top left, then select Show Bottom Address Bar.

How to Move the Search Bar in iOS 16: Settings Method

The less intuitive and more complex method is to go through the Settings app. 

• Open Settings and scroll down to Safari. 
• Then, in the Safari settings dialog, scroll down to Tabs
• You'll see two icons. Tap the one on the right called Single Tab to put the address bar back at the top of Safari. The icons helpfully show you where the address and search bar will appear, either on the bottom or top of the window.
• To move the address bar back to the bottom so you can swipe left and right to move through your tabs, select the Tab Bar icon on the left instead.
