  • Trip10620624590 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A beautiful experience to remember!!!! :) Picked up from the hotel in an air conditioned minibus and taken to beautiful waterfalls at two different locations. We made a stop to look at some jewelry should anybody wish to purchase between the locations. This was then followed by some delicious Turkish food at a restaurant (which is free). We then made our way to the harbour where we had a nice long boat ride. After returning we had some free time to stroll through the old town independently before making our way back to the hotels. I would definitely recommend this excursion as the tour guides were really helpful and kind too. One thing I wasn't really happy with was the cable cars being advertised but due to the tragic accident (April 2024) which resulted in it being closed, nobody could use it. This wasn't explained to us despite it still being advertised as an activity whilst booking. Read more Written April 25, 2024

  • D8805NAdaveg 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Buggies, zip line and rafting experience. Transport to and from location was OK. Buggies were a bit boring, slow with no excitement. Zip line went OK but safety is questionable as equipment looks home made. Rafting time came and staff looking to sell gloves and rubber shoes. "You need these" we were told. Ten Euro for each item which turned out to be a total con with the staff changing prices depending where you came from. We saw a family from Iran being charged way less per item than ourselves which was a disappointing. Turns out you don't need any gloves or rubber shoes, anything to get more money from you. We booked the package with food included. Half way through the rafting we pulled the raft up to the bank and rested. No need for this really as the water does all the work. Turns out that this was not the food stop but a stall which is an EXTRA, this was not told to us. Rafting ended and money asked for for the stop and usual pictures. Decided not to buy the pictures as we were pissed off with attitude. A few no doubt insulting comments in the local lingo from the guide when telling this news and away back to hotel. As said, transport was fine. In short, don't buy the mid point food, any gloves or rubber shoes. Read more Written April 13, 2024

Coastal views were incredible, was a nice boat trip, experience also allowed swimming unaided in the sea while waiting for the scuba diving to be ready which was great. Instructors were accommodating and we had a good time. Only thing I'd suggest is a little more patience from the instructors before the first dive, there was no chance to just feel the experience and we were just thrown in to the pictures very procedurally. • nighthawks 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Massive disappointment What a massive disappointment and undoubtedly the worst experience during our entire vacation. The cashier at the entrance asked for my preferred currency for ticket payment, and I clearly specified that I wanted to pay in Turkish Liras using my Visa card, as I always do. However, to my dismay, I later discovered that she had charged me in USD, subjecting me to a 3% conversion fee. To add insult to injury, the receipt falsely claimed that I had willingly chosen to pay in this foreign currency. As I had purchased tickets for four adults, the already expensive entry fee became exorbitantly pricey due to the unfavorable conversion rate and additional fees, resulting in nearly $200 in total expenses. As for the aquarium itself, it left much to be desired and hardly justified the considerable expense. Despite its bold claim of being "the world's biggest aquarium," it failed to impress. The vast majority of the exhibits consisted of small aquariums with nothing remarkable to offer. Even the touted water tunnel fell short of expectations, lacking the grandeur and splendor that I have seen in other aquariums. Instead of being immersed in an awe-inspiring underwater world, it amounted to a mere smattering of water atop rounded glass walls, offering nothing special in terms of showcasing marine life. Overall, the aquarium in Antalya was a grave disappointment, both in terms of misleading pricing practices and the underwhelming quality of the exhibits. I would strongly advise others to explore alternative attractions that offer a more rewarding and fulfilling experience for their hard-earned money. Read more Written August 2, 2023

Best Places to see Lions in Tanzania

13th August 2021

Best Place to see lions in Tanzania

With world lion day passing this week, we thought it would be prevalent to revisit some of our favourite places in Tanzania where the ‘King of the Jungle’ reigns supreme. Although lions can be seen all over the continent, there are some incredible places across Tanzania where lion sightings are abundant and can be seen exhibiting some incredible behaviour.

Male lion Ruaha National Park

The Serengeti National Park

Arguably the most predator-dense area of the Serengeti are the Eastern Plains. Filled with copious amounts of wildlife, lion sightings are not only frequent here, but with no other lodges except Namiri Plains , staying here will ensure that sightings are often exclusive and always intimate.

Our lion vs buffalo viral video was filmed at Namiri.

The Ngorongoro Crater

From &Beyond’s flagship Crater Lodge to Asilia’s unique Highlands , the Ngorongoro Crater is arguably Tanzania’s most famous area. Renowned across the world for its density of all ‘Big 5’ members, it is here that lion versus hyena battles can be at their most intense. Witnessing a clan of hyena attempt to steal a kill from the lions is a cacophony of senses and certainly something to be marvelled at.

Male lion in Ngorongoro Crater

Ruaha National Park

Whether you stay in the Northern area of Ruaha in camps such as Ikuka , or head to the isolated Southern end of the park and stay in Jongomero , you can be sure of some great lion sightings. Ruaha is famed for it giant killing lions. Super prides form and they tackle buffalo, giraffe and even elephants! It seems their hunger holds no limit and to see such battles unfold is a spectacle that will take your breath away.

Male lion on buffalo kill

Tarangire National Park

The least visited of the Northern Parks, Tarangire offers a peaceful and tranquil part to any Tanzania safari itinerary. Kuro camp is best located in the heart of the park and gives guests great access to the swamp. During the latter part of the dry season, it often becomes the only main water source in the area drawing in game from across the park. It is here where the lions lurk. Be it during the early hours of the morning or mid-afternoon, a visit to the Tarangire swap will certainly give you a great chance of finding these regal felines.

Elephants in Tarangire

Katavi National Park

Whilst the lions of Ruaha feast on buffalo and giraffe, in the remote Katavi , the lions have specialised to hunt hippos. As the dry season progresses, hippos become ever more susceptible to the conditions leaving them weak and vulnerable. Not only is this behaviour incredible to see, but because Katavi is so remote you are likely to be the only guests in the sighting. Chada camp is the place to visit here!

What to Expect

You are probably aware of this already but going on safari is not like any other holiday you may have taken…it’s really not. So if you like to know what to expect on safari, then let’s take a look at what lies ahead. You can expect:

  • Beautiful Scenery
  • Abundant Wildlife
  • Delicious Food
  • Relaxing Afternoons
  • Great Company

African hospitality is second to none!

A typical Serengeti safari day begins by waking up early morning (around 6 A.M.). Take hot shower and head to take your breakfast before starting morning game drive.

During Safari don’t forget to keep your camera handy at all times – you never know when you will spot game wandering.

Keep in mind your day is always flexible. If you are not keen on early mornings or prefer to spend a whole day on safari making stops for picnic lunches in the bush, then you’re in luck! The friendly staff will always arrange your schedule with you the night prior to ensure you enjoy your stay. After all, it is your African safari!

Day 1 Safari starts from Arusha, drive to Serengeti National Park

After pick-up from your accommodation in Arusha, we drive to Serengeti which is around 6-7 hours away from Arusha. On the way, you will enjoy scenic views of Tanzania. Hop off the vehicle to view the Ngorongoro Crater and experience the Serengeti plains.

Serengeti National Park is a World Heritage Site teeming with wildlife. Over 2 million ungulates, 4,000 lions, 1,000 leopards, 550 cheetahs and some 500 bird species inhabit an area close to 15,000 square kilometers in size. Today, most visitors come here with one aim alone – to witness millions of wildebeest, zebra, gazelle and eland on a mass trek to quench their thirst for water and eat fresh grass. During this great cyclical movement, these ungulates move around the ecosystem in a seasonal pattern, defined by rainfall and grass nutrients.

Lunch will be offered on the vehicle during the safari. By late afternoon, you will arrive at your designated lodge to rest, dine and cherish the great moments during the safari.

Main Destination: Serengeti National Park

Meals & Drinks:

  • All meals included
  • Drinking water  (Other drinks not included)

Accommodation: Tukaone Serengeti Camps

Day 2 Full-day game drive in Serengeti National Park

Today, you will have a full-day game drive. After an early breakfast at your lodge in Serengeti, you resume from where you left off the previous day. Together with our experienced safari guide, you will look for the Big 5 animals in their natural habitat.

The magic of Serengeti National Park is not easy to describe in words. Not only seeing, but also hearing the buzz of millions of wildebeest so thick in the air that it vibrates through your entire body, is something you will try to describe to friends and family, before realizing it’s impossible. Vistas of honey-lit plains at sunset are so beautiful, it’s worth the trip just to witness this.

You will carry your packed lunch which you will enjoy when making a pit stop in your safari vehicle. After lunch, you continue with the game drive. By late afternoon, you will head back to your lodge to rest, dine and cherish the wonderful moments.

serengeti lion safari antalya

Day 3 Early morning game drive in Serengeti and drive back to Arusha in the afternoon

Although this will be the last day of your safari, there will still be a lot of game drives to experience. You will start the day immediately after breakfast at your lodge in Serengeti. After check-out from the lodge, you head straight into the game drive.

The large herds of animals on the move can’t be witnessed anywhere else. Whereas other famous wildlife parks are fenced, the Serengeti is protected, but unfenced. This gives animals enough space to make their return journey, one that they’ve been doing for millions of years. Around midday, you stop and enjoy your lunch before you start your journey back to Arusha.

You will arrive back in Arusha by late afternoon or early evening. You will have the option to be dropped off at your accommodation in Arusha or head straight to the airport. One thing is for sure, you will have collected a bundle of unforgettable memories and witnessed the Big 5 animals in their natural habitat.

serengeti lion safari antalya

Walking through a wild paradise

Africa Geographic Stories & Galleries

Simon Espley

serengeti lion safari antalya

“Listen”, says Jean, cupping his ears and staring at the distant horizon. I listened. Nothing, except for that constant muuuuuh muuuuh? muuuuh coming from the wildebeest herds dotted around us, and the constant buzz of birds and insects. Still I listened. Nothing. I looked at him and raised a quizzical eyebrow.

“Exactly”, he said.

You see, the Serengeti can be pretty busy during the Great Wildebeest Migration season, and yet we had been on safari for days without hearing a vehicle, or seeing another soul. This was no private concession; we were in Serengeti National Park. On one occasion, we had watched a pride of lions hunting a herd of cranky old male buffaloes (more about this later) – no other tourists present, despite this being prime tourism season. Huh?

Serengeti

It turns out that the Serengeti is VAST, and there are massive swathes of wilderness that are far away from the roads, and therefore see no tourism traffic. I have seen this during several flights over the Serengeti over the years – miles and miles of open savannah dotted with rocky kopjes and woodland, and rivers snaking through – but no roads or tourists in sight.

I was on a walking and fly-camping safari in these Serengeti wilderness areas. Heaven on Earth. When I say ‘fly-camping’, I don’t mean dig your own pit latrine, divine water and find food. I mean comfortable, rustic tented camps that are either seasonal (timed according to the migration movements) or they are set up specifically for your walking safari. And there is a team behind the scenes to cater to your needs while you make the most of being in paradise.

serengeti lion safari antalya

One late morning, after walking since sunrise, the rising heat and aching feet drove us to a huge fig tree clawing out a living on a rocky kopje with views across the simmering savannah. We clambered up the rocks, to find chicken wraps, chocolate brownies, cool drinks and mattresses set out in the cool shade. Say no more.

Four hours of feasting and snoozing later, we walked the last hour to our camp for the night. It was just us on that rock, with regular visits from white-headed barbets and Fischer’s lovebirds as they plundered the ripe figs overhead. Some in our party spent that time reading books or Kindles, some chatted quietly, and others like me simply hit the snooze button. Could life be better?

Serengeti

About those lions. So, we were walking across a slope overlooking a riverine drainage line below us, when we first heard their faint grunted contact calls. Then we saw a few svelte lionesses slinking through the dense riverine shrubs, totally focused on the hunt. We sat in the shade of a small tree a few hundred metres away and waited for the drama to unfold. The lionesses ignored us like we were wallpaper, though they did glance at us now and then, possibly to make sure we would not spoil the hunt. Sharp eyes amongst us picked up the dark shapes of several huge male buffaloes lurking amongst the shrubs, seemingly oblivious to the advancing threat. We held our collective breaths.

Suddenly the silence was broken as the buff boys picked up the scent of the lions and got the hell out of there, joined by several others that we had not realised were mud-wallowing a short distance away. The cantankerous buggers made their indignant departure (happily in the opposite direction to us) amidst snorts, farts and bellows. And the lions simply vanished. Gone.

An hour later, while walking up a small valley that would crest with a view over our next camp, we gaped in wonderment at the sheer number of animals just across the valley, a few hundred metres away – good numbers of elephant, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, topi, hartebeest and warthog. In fact, I cannot remember one time during the 5-day walking safari that we could not see or hear large numbers of animals all around us. At times when walking across the flat grassy savanna, the herds of wildebeest and zebras seemed to part ahead of us and reform behind us, like a magnetic force field.

serengeti lion safari antalya

One morning I was enjoying a quiet moment alone on the fringes of the camp, mug of coffee in hand and watching a stunning red-cheeked cordon-bleu waxbill scratch around for grass seeds when a daring side-striped jackal appeared out of nowhere and dived into the grass 10 metres from me. He emerged with a tiny Thomson’s gazelle fawn in his mouth, and headed off, dragging the screaming young thing with him. In a flash, the fawn’s mom appeared and attacked the jackal with diminutive determination. After a few head-butts in the rear-end (those sharp little horns must have hurt), the jackal dropped his intended breakfast and ran for the hills. Mom quickly escorted her kid away, shaken but not stirred.

Life on a walking safari is made of these moments of magic, these packets of exhilaration and solitude. This is the “slow safari”, the true essence of journeying.

Serengeti

Who should do a Serengeti walking safari

These walking safaris are not the brief mid-morning stroll after your game drive, offered by many traditional safari lodges. Instead, the goal is to cover a good amount of ground and to explore the vastness beyond the usual tourist haunts. And so, you should be prepared to spend most of each morning walking, and possibly part of each afternoon. The pace is slow, and the terrain easy, but you should be walking fit.

This is not a route march, so every excuse to stop is taken – from bird-watching to wondering at a spider packing up her dew-drenched web after a night of hunting. And watching lions hunt buffaloes.

serengeti lion safari antalya

You will carry your water and personal items for that walk, but of course, your kit bag and heavier items are left in camp, to be transported to the next camp location. Blisters are the norm, and you will get hot and uncomfortable at times. And did I mention the tsetse flies?

There is a game-drive vehicle-based at camp, and so game drives are possible during walking safaris – but the true essence of walking safaris is to, well, walk. Indeed, Serengeti walking safaris are for those who want more than the traditional lodge and game drive arrangement. That said, a combo of the two is just perfect. After this fantastic soul-food walking safari, I headed off to enjoy a more traditional lodge-based safari , also in the Serengeti. Which did I prefer?  That is like asking whether you prefer the main course or dessert. The question is what you want, versus what you need. The answer lies within you…

serengeti lion safari antalya

Serengeti National Park , in northern Tanzania, comprises of almost 15,000 km² of predominantly rolling grasslands, savannah, riverine forest and woodlands. This vast landscape forms part of the unfenced Mara-Serengeti ecosystem that spans Kenya and Tanzania and plays host to the Great Wildebeest Migration and offers regular sightings of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) as well as zebras, crocodiles, hippos, giraffes, various antelope species and good populations of cheetahs and hyenas, as well as smaller species such as serval and bat-eared fox.

The name Serengeti is derived from the Maa word siringet , which refers to a “place where the land runs forever.”

Serengeti

Where to stay

Simon was a guest of Wayo Africa , who offer several activities across northern Tanzania, from canoeing to biking and walking. Using expert guides and unique access, they focus on remote areas within the iconic Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara and Arusha regions. With only 30% of the Serengeti currently accessed by tourists, they prefer to operate in the unexplored regions of the park, from their various permanent and mobile camps that are located seasonally to either follow the Great Wildebeest Migration or to cater to specific client requests. The camps are simple and very comfortable, evoking a feeling of adventure – from a bygone safari era. They are termed “green camps” because every effort is made to tread lightly – making use of solar power, gathered rainwater and compostable toilets.

serengeti lion safari antalya

The three camps range from ‘classic’ camps (canvas bell tents) to ‘walking’ camps (canvas dome tents) and ‘trekking’ camps (ultra-lightweight nylon tents).

Naabi Green Camp  is located under a stand of large Acacia tortilis trees in a beautiful quiet area at the foot of the giant Nabi rocky kopje in the southern Serengeti short grass plains, south of the prime Seronera area and close to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The camp is open from December to March each year, to catch the Great Wildebeest Migration as it moves through this area, but also well-placed to be able to head further south, west or north to wherever the migration is moving.

Trekking Safari Camp and Serengeti Walking Camp provide access to remote parts of the Serengeti, following the migrating herds. The lightweight mobile camps have comfortable mattresses and mosquito mesh sides/tops.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, you will be met by your driver and transferred to  Kibo palace hotel in Arusha for dinner and overnight. Settle into your accommodation, ready to start your safari proper in the morning.

Day 2: Arusha National Park/Canoe ride

After breakfast, you drive to Arusha National Park for a morning game drive with a picnic lunch. This is one of the smaller national parks in Tanzania, but it has a rich variety of wildlife and landscapes. From the swampy Ngurdoto Crater and alkaline lakes to dense jungle and the towering peaks of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro . After your picnic lunch enjoys a peaceful and scenic canoeing safari on Momella Lake. Day 3: Lake Natron/Flamingos/Waterfall

Drive today across the only active volcano in East Africa, Oldonyo Lengai, towards Lake Natron. On the way, you can enjoy amazing landscapes and traditional Maasai. Lake Natron is the most important breeding site for flamingos in the world and the only breeding site for flamingos in East Africa.  The crust created by the alkali salt sometimes gives the lake a stunning red or pink hue, or even orange in the more shallow parts, by the microorganisms that live there. Today you also visit the big Engarasero waterfall. In the late afternoon, you continue to Lake Maasai Giraffe Eco Lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Lake Manyara National Park/Night game drive

Today starts, after breakfast, with a game drive in Lake Manyara National park . This park is known for its huge soda lake filled with pink-hued flamingos, a large population of baboons, incredible birdlife and breathtaking views. You can see giraffes, elephants, hippos, buffaloes, zebras, flamingos, and if you are lucky you spot a tree-climbing lion. In the late afternoon, you will continue to Rift Valley Photographic Lodge for dinner.  After dinner, you will depart for night game drive in Lake Manyara national park to look for animals that are hardly seen in daylight like porcupine, aardvark, genets, bush babies, and others. This is also a unique opportunity for you to experience Wild Africa at night as you listen to the different animal sounds. Overnight will be at Burudika Manyara Lodge .

Day 5: Serengeti National Park

Today you go on a morning an afternoon game drive in the famous Serengeti National Park . If you want to spot the Big Five – lion, elephant, leopard, rhino, and buffalo- all in one park, the Serengeti is one of the best places to do so. The abundance of wildlife in this park is unmatched anywhere else in Africa. Depending on which time of the year you visit this park, you can also witness the Great Migration. It’s an impressive experience to see all those hoofed mammals, followed by iconic predators like lions, migrate in a clockwise circle every year. Late in the afternoon, you return to Osinon Tented Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Serengeti National Park

Another day of morning and afternoon game viewing in the Serengeti. If you want to see the kings of the jungle, the Serengeti is the place to be. With so many wildebeest, gazelles and zebras present it is no wonder the Serengeti is also home to 4,000 lions and 1,000 leopards. Apart from the Big Five, the Serengeti boasts the cheetah, jackal, hyena, serval, aardvark, pangolin, porcupine, crocodiles, giraffe, python, black mamba, spitting cobra, ostrich, martial eagle, lovebirds, and vultures, just to name a few. Enjoy this supreme game viewing and return to Osinon tented camp in the late afternoon. After shower meet your safari guide at the fireplace for a cold Kilimanjaro beer or glass of wine as he gives you a short history of Tanzania from pre-colonial time. Dinner and overnight will be at Osinon camp.

Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater

Set off towards the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive with picnic lunch. It shelters close to 30.000 animals including the Big Five. The crater teems with zebras, buffaloes, lions, wildebeest, warthogs, baboons, elephants, flamingos, ostriches, hippos, cheetahs, and a small population of the rare black rhino. The beautiful colors and dancing clouds make the crater almost surreal. Because of its natural beauty, the Ngorongoro Crater is chosen as one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders. In the late afternoon, you will continue to Marera lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Lake Eyasi/Bushmen

This day will be full of culture, with interesting encounters with a local tribe. After breakfast, you drive to Lake Eyasi. This is an untouched and scenically beautiful area where you can get a real insight into the way of life of the Hadzabe Bushmen. This tribe hunts on wild animals with bow and arrows, eating roots, honey, and wild fruits. Visit their habitat and experience their culture first hand. You go with the Bushman on a game walk an participate in their real-life activities such as hunting. For a lot of people, these are some of the most valuable and memorable experiences of their safari. All meals and overnight will be at Marera lodge .

Day 9: Tarangire National Park

Rise up early for a game drive in Tarangire National Park with picnic breakfast. This lovely park is the kingdom of elephants, birds and baobabs. The Serengeti Lions

Out of all the Big Cats in Serengeti, the Lion is the one that arouses much awe and admiration. It is the largest of Africa's big cats and is commonly reffered as the "King of the Jungle". In Tanzania, you can spot these magnificent creatures while on a wildlife safari in Serengeti National Park See Serengeti Safari Packages or by visiting some of Tanzania's National Parks and Reserves. It is estimated that there are close to 3,000 Lions in the Serengeti - Mara ecosystem.

Lions are the most sociable member of the larger cat family. They live in Prides of 15 to 20 members, with up to three males, several adult females (one dominant), and a number of sub-adults and cubs. Typically males may hold territory of between 20-400 square kms. within which are several prides of females. In Serengeti, females do most of the hunting, helped by males in taking down large animals. They favour wildebeest and zebra, but outside of the annual ‘migration’, they have often been seen taking on other prey, including buffalo and warthogs. Because of their high metabolism they sleep about 20 hours a day, and kills are sometimes made at night.

serengeti lion safari antalya

The females estrus cycle lasts about 4 days, copulations average 20 seconds and only 1 in 5 cycles ever produces upto on average 3 cubs (after 3 and a half month gestation). Male cubs are ousted from the pride between 2-3 and a half years old whereas female cubs may stay indefinitely. The cubs are weaned between 7-8 months old and up until this age are allo-suckled by any lioness. They have a longevity of about 14-20 years.

serengeti lion safari antalya

Lion cubs are born with blue eyes that change to amber or brown when around the age of two to three months.

serengeti lion safari antalya

Lions have one of the most complex communication behaviours of any of the cats. They can make a variety of calls which include roars, grunts, moans, growls, snarls, meows, purrs, hums, puffs and woofs. Lions are the loudest of any big cat and can be heard up to 8km away ! Lions roar for a number of reasons, from advertising territorial ownership and intimidating rivals, to locating other members of the pride and assisting in social cohesion. Another advantage to roaring is that female lions can recognise the roar of a male who belongs in their pride to that of an outsider – this helps the females keep a safe distance from outsiders who would most likely try to harm their cubs.

And while you often get incredibly close to some animals, binoculars help you see the minute details – such as the deep crevices in an elephant hide or the insects swarming around a giraffe – and you will need them to observe the wildlife that are not as sociable and stay far from the safari vehicle (off-road driving is not allowed in national parks).

Africa Dream Safaris is a proud sponsor of the Serengeti Lion Project. Our funding helps to protect lions against diseases such as canine distemper through programs aimed at vaccinating domestic dogs on the periphery of the Serengeti. We are delighted to announce that Africa Dream Safaris was honored with the Tanzania Conservation Award specifically because of our work with the Serengeti Lion Project. This prestigious award is presented by the Minister of Tourism in conjunction with the Tanzania Tourist Board.

Groundbreaking Field Study

Twenty-six resident lion prides residing in and around the Central Serengeti have been continuously studied since 1966 when George Schaller began his groundbreaking field study. The Serengeti Lion Project was hence created, which is the longest continuous field study ever conducted on a large mammal. One female member from each of the 26 prides is radio collared so that they can be tracked and studied on a weekly basis. George Schaller's initial study turned out to be a true landmark, not only because he worked out so many aspects of their social lives, but because his findings made it clear that lions did not limit the population size of their prey species. It was not necessary to persecute lions and other carnivores in order to ensure large populations of herbivores. The Serengeti could persist forever as an unspoiled spectacle of predators and their prey.

Although we might take this notion for granted now, park wardens used to shoot predators and even eradicate some species from game reserves.

George Schaller began and conducted the study from 1966 to 1969, followed by Brian Bertram from 1969 to 1974, Jeannette Hanby and David Bygott from 1974 to 1978 and lastly Craig Packer starting in 1978. After 1978, the Serengeti Lion Project was taken over by the University of Minnesota under the directorship of Craig Packer. Two field biologists are stationed in Seronera 365 days a year to monitor and continue this long-term study. For a $500 per group donation, we can arrange a field talk by the current field biologists at the Lion House in Seronera (Central Serengeti) where you can learn first-hand about the lions of the Serengeti.

Proud Sponsor

Africa Dream Safaris helps fund the Serengeti Lion Project's ongoing conservation efforts. In turn, periodic reports are prepared exclusively for Africa Dream Safaris by the on-site researchers for the Serengeti Lion Project. So you won't find this info anywhere else!

Since there are MANY lion prides in the Serengeti, we picked 6 specific study prides to focus on. Talk about having the inside scoop! These Serengeti Lion Project researchers live, sleep, and work out in the bush every single day, so they are able to offer invaluable information about the location and adventures of our favorite lions. Reading like a soap opera at times, we think you will also enjoy the real-life drama and adventures of these awesome animals as they live, hunt, and raise their families together in the harsh African wilderness.
