Thailand Tours & Vacations

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Learn more about Thailand

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

Top 10 iconic Thai landscapes

Spend a night as their guest for a unique insight into their life on our 5 day Thailand Hilltribe Trek.

5. Ayuthaya

Modern meets ancient in Ayuthaya. The current city intertwines itself with the remnants of what was once one of Asia's great capitals. Walk the streets in search of clues to its imperial past and hire a bike to ride through the countryside, exploring the area's ruins.

Enjoy this historical park for yourself during a 10 day Highlights of Thailand tour.

6. Sukhothai

This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvelous monuments, and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

Stop by Sukhothai on our 8 day Explore Northern Thailand adventure.

The waters surrounding Krabi are dotted with hundreds of limestone karst islands. Kayakers and rock climbers will love exploring them, while others can travel to the nearby floating villages or just relax on one of the region's perfect beaches.

We've made sure to stop by Krabi on our incredible 28 day Bangkok to Bali adventure - you'll thank us later.

8. Golden Triangle

The area where the Thai, Laotian, and Burmese borders meet has long been associated with colorful cultures and illicit opium trade. The opium may have gone but the color hasn't and the markets offer all sorts of amazing local handicrafts.

Set your sights on this incredible part of the world on a 3 days Chiang Mai and Golden Triangle.

9. Khao Sok National Park

For a real jungle experience, spend a couple of days in Khao Sok National Park. Thick rainforests, limestone cliffs, waterfalls, and mountains make a wild playground.

7. Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is perhaps one of Thailand's most recognizable gems. Kayak around the green waters, admiring the sheer limestone karsts that jut dramatically out of the sea.

Coast through the must-see sights of Phang Nga Bay on our 8 day Phuket Sailing Adventure.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

Is Thailand a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQI travelers. Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation .

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Thailand travel reviews

Thailand tour photos from our travellers, recommended tours, the best ways to pay for services in thailand.

Thailand's local currency is the Thai Baht. The best way to carry your money is in debit cards, withdrawing cash in local currencies from ATM machines. ATMs are found throughout Thailand and will generally accept cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks. It is a great idea to travel with both a Visa and Mastercard if at all possible in case of loss or problems with one card, you will have a back up. If you are bringing US Dollars, please make sure that the notes are new and in good condition. Notes older than 2003, or with any tears or blemishes may not be accepted. Be fussy with your bank when buying cash!

Tips on tips

Some reasonable suggestions on how to tip the staff

It is customary in Asia to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service.

Tour guides / Drivers

$ 1.5 to $ 3.5.

Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from $1.5-$3.5 USD per person per day depending on the quality and length of the service

G Adventures CEO

$ 20 to $ 25.

The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline $20-25 USD per person, per week can be used.

Packing for Thailand

What you need to bring depends on the trip you have chosen and the countries or regions you are planning to visit. We suggest that you pack as lightly as possible as your are expected to carry your own luggage. As a rule we try not to have to walk more than 15-20 minutes with your bags which is why we recommend keeping the weight of your bags between 10-15kg/22-30lb. Suitcases are not recommended for G Adventures trips! Most travellers carry a backpack or rolling bag of small to medium size (no XXL ones please!) as they need to fit under the beds when travelling on sleeper trains. You will also need a day pack/bag to carry water, cameras and other electronics like iPods and mobile phones. If your trip involves overnights in homestays, villages or camping then you usually have the opportunity to rent sleeping bags if need be instead of bringing them with you.

Electricity and power supplies in Thailand

The entire country of Thailand runs on 220-volt currents and uses five types of electrical outlets — type A, B, C, F and O. Type A: mainly used in North and Central America, China and Japan. This socket only works with plug A. Type B: like type A but with an extra prong for grounding. This socket also works with plug A. Type C: also known as the standard "Euro" plug. This socket also works with plug E and plug F. Type F: also known as "Schuko". This socket also works with plug C and plug E. Type O: this type is unique to Thailand but it also works with plug C, plug E and plug F.

small group tours to thailand

Sawasdee and welcome to Bangkok! Thailand’s vibrant capital, Bangkok is a global destination renowned for its lively street life, fragrant food and fascinating cultural landmarks.

Meet your tour representative at Bangkok International Airport (BKK) and transfer to your downtown hotel, where you’ll have the opportunity to explore freely. This evening, join your fellow travellers and meet your guide for a welcome dinner and drinks at your hotel.

This morning, pay a visit to Wat Pho – the oldest operating centre for public education in Thailand – known as the ‘Temple of the Reclining Buddha’. The awe-inspiring namesake is a 46-metre-long golden statue, humbling in its majesty.

Continue to the Grand Palace for a glimpse at the ancient Siamese court. Marvel at the colourful construction and finely detailed flourishes dating back over 200 years. Follow the many pilgrims to Wat Phra Kaew, known as the ‘Temple of the Emerald Buddha’. Here, Thailand’s most sacred statue of Buddha resides, whose dress is changed seasonally by the King himself.

Sit down for delicious lunch at a local restaurant, then hop aboard a longtail boat as you glide along Chao Phraya River on your way to Wat Arun, the ‘Temple of the Dawn.' This riverside pagoda is a mind-boggling architectural feat dating back to the 17th century. Stand in awe of the incredibly detailed ceramic tiling and dizzying spires of this historic Buddhist temple, the tallest of which was built to resemble the legendary Hindu Mount Meru.

Later, return to your hotel for an evening spent freely.

Wave farewell to bustling Bangkok and transfer to the airport for an onward flight to Sukhothai – the first ancient capital of Siam. Check in at your welcoming hotel and settle in before tucking into an evening meal.

Wake to a day of exploration – spend your morning uncovering the historic ruins of UNESCO World Heritage-listed Sukhothai Historical Park. Jump on your provided bike as you peddle between Sukhothai’s most captivating sites, from its distinctive moat and city walls to the wondrous temples of Wat Sri Sawai, Wat Mahathat and the enormous, seated Buddha of Wat Si Chum.

Pay a visit to Ban Na Thon Chan, a local community village focused on balancing natural and cultural heritage. Learn the history and daily customs of the community, many of whom are descended from the ancient Lanna kingdom. Enjoy a lunch of delicious Sukhothai dishes, then hop aboard an e-tan for a tour of the village and the chance to see local craftsmen as they make furniture, wooden dolls and traditional desserts. Walk through the beautiful green rice paddies and soak up the scenic serenity.

Later, return to your hotel for a peaceful evening at leisure.

After a hearty breakfast, make your way to Si Satchanalai Historical Park on the bank of the Yom River. Discover a staggering 134 monuments spread among the ruins of this ancient town, including numerous temples and the fascinating Celadon Kiln Site Study, thought to date as far back as the 14th century.

Enjoy a local lunch before driving north to Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, one of Thailand’s best-preserved wooden temples, showcasing the steep-roofed Lanna-style design. Continue your journey to magical Chiang Mai, where you’ll check in at your centrally located hotel for an evening at leisure.

Gather your energy over breakfast, then drive up the nearby mountains to the astounding Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Climb the magnificent 306-step staircase, bounded by striking depictions of dragon-headed serpents known as ‘Naga’. At the top, spend your time admiring the glittering gold stupa, then turn your gaze outward for sweeping views of the city below.

Visit the 14th-century Wat Umong, a forested temple covered in moss and rich greenery and make an offering to the resident Buddhist monks, then enter the complex's mysterious tunnels.

After a filling lunch at a local restaurant, carry on to dazzling Sri Suphan for a look at the numerous local artisans who operate from inside the temple. As a centre for handicrafts and silverwares, shining Sri Suphan plays host to those preserving traditional craftsmanship passed down through generations. Try your hand at producing lacquerware under the guidance of the experts and create the perfect souvenir to take home.

Today, take the opportunity to acquaint yourself with the rural life of northern Thailand as you travel through the picturesque countryside to the mountain village of Mae Kampong. Meet with the residents of this small community and follow your local guides on a stroll through the forest town, passing peaceful waterfalls and carefully cultivated fields of tea and coffee.

Enjoy a home-cooked lunch with your hosts, then continue on to a relaxing Thai massage. Explore the tea and coffee plantations of the region and learn about the different harvesting practices for each crop.

Later this afternoon, travel to Baan Hongnual for an invigorating Thai cooking class. Listen to your experienced teacher as you learn to prepare the distinct sauces and flavourful spices that transform each dish into something truly special. Savour your simmering creations, then spend some time strolling the herb and vegetable farm, spotting countless tropical fruits from longan to guava to the versatile jackfruit.

Rise to a refreshing breakfast, then transfer to Chiang Mai Airport (CNX) for your onward flight to the picturesque island of Phuket on southern Thailand's Andaman Sea coast.

Once you arrive in this tropical paradise, you’ll be transferred to your premium accommodation to check in for an evening at leisure. Soak up the easy-going atmosphere and admire the lush scenery, from turquoise waters to towering rock formations.

Enjoy two days of absolute beach bliss, dipping into the warm and tranquil waters and reclining on Thailand’s most beautiful beaches, feeling the soft sands beneath your toes.

Choose to step out for a stroll through the colourful town, sampling Phuket’s finest seafood at a local restaurant. During your stay, be sure to set aside some time to truly unwind with an included Thai massage at your hotel.

Continue your rejuvenating experience with a day free to explore or relax as you desire. Perhaps decide to visit the beautiful Great Buddha of Phuket, a serene statue overlooking the idyllic town below.

In the evening, join your fellow travellers at your hotel for a sumptuous farewell dinner and drinks, reminiscing on your adventure over southern Thai dishes.

After one final breakfast at your beachside haven, it’s time to wave goodbye to its white sands and transfer to the airport (HKT), where your journey ends.

"My experience with TruTravels has been one of the best travel experiences to date. I was a little concerned about having a small group - but the tour leaders have made every activity fun and engaging. I would definitely say they are friends. The organisation and local knowledge was great, they were great fun whilst remaining professional and in control. The nights out in Canggu were great, getting to meet the other tour leaders and Tru staff meeting the other tour groups is a great idea. I really cannot stress enough how much of a great trip I've had with TruTravels. From booking, to pre-tour communications, through to the last 10 days - it has been well organised, managed and delivered by amazing guides. Thanks so much to Rianna, Marta and Jonny for their enthusiasm throughout the tour, their concern for when I was sick and generally for everything they did to make this an amazing Bali Experience. Much love for the tour guides!!!I would definitely recommend a trip with TruTravels!!"

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

Thailand Tour Selection Trips

  • Credit cards are accepted in larger stores, but smaller vendors may not accept them because of the fees. The largest bill is 1,000 baht (about $30), which is difficult to break in most smaller stores. The 20 baht and 100 baht bills are the most common.
  • Remember to haggle! Anytime a price isn’t displayed there’s a very good chance it’s negotiable.
  • Where possible, try to work with operators that employ locals. This helps to keep money in the local communities you visit.
  • Many take Thailand trips eager to see elephants and tigers. Be cautious about the tours you book - some mistreat these animals in the name of tourism. Avoid tours that offer posing with wild animals and riding.
  • Tap water is not safe to drink in Thailand. Going on a tour will help ensure you always have plenty of bottled water.
  • At 8am and 6pm, the Thai national anthem and another patriotic song are played over every speaker, and everyone will come to a halt. Stand respectfully for the couple minutes it’s played.

Additional details

Thailand tour packages can run the gamut from historical and culturally immersive, to a young party barge around Phuket .

Many different global tour operators have trips to Thailand, often with different themes. Thailand is a great destination for wildlife lovers, active travelers, and of course beach goers.

Elephant Tours in Thailand

Elephants and their mahouts (or handlers) have long been a part of the Thai economy, and helped with the logging business. When this practice was outlawed by the government, the role of elephant trainers and their animals transitioned to become a part of the tourism industry.

In some ways, this has created new animal welfare problems. Elephants often undergo abuse in their training to become rideable attractions, and once in this career, they can be overworked and fed improperly. On the other hand, elephant trainers complain that they would not be able to afford to feed their elephants (which, not surprisingly, eat a lot) without pandering to tourist interests.

Luckily, there is a way to ethically interact with elephants. Elephant sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers (which help restore the health of retired elephants and transition them to a more natural way of life) are great options of getting up close and personal with these gentle giants. It’s also a great way to fully immerse yourself in a natural Thai landscape.

Choosing a Thailand Tour

There is a lot to consider when picking your tour to Thailand. Oftentimes, tours in Thailand are geared toward a younger crowd, seeking the party atmosphere Southeast Asia is so well known for. If this is not what you’re after, consider a nature tour, or searching by a higher accommodation rating.

The majority of Thailand tours are in the Value (3 star) range . For a bit more comfort, consider searching Premium or Luxury tours, as these terms have are relative to what tour accommodation is normally like in Thailand. Put another way, luxury accommodation in Thailand will mean nicer, but not overly extravagant.

Food tours are very popular in Thailand, and will feature a lot of street food, so be prepared. Traveling with a tour is one of the best ways to ensure you stay safe and eat safe. Your guide will know the best stalls and have advice on where to eat.

Active and adventure travel is another main theme when it comes to Thailand tours . This usually means visiting several national parks for hiking, zip lining, and waterfall rappelling. You’ll be sure to spend some time around Chiang Mai , Thailand’s adventure capital.

Cheap Thailand Tour Packages

Thailand is notorious for being a great destination for travelers on a budget. Although this is not as true as it once used to be, due to the flood of backpackers and tourists in the last 10 years, it’s still possible to experience Thailand on a budget .  Here are three tips to help guide you in traveling Thailand cheaply:

Eat cheap. If you avoid international restaurants and classic tourist destinations, Thai food is still very affordable. More affordable meals can be found in cafeteria style dining halls, and from street vendors.

If you’re eating street food, walk off the beaten path. A good way to reduce the price of even the street food in Thailand is to take a turn off major street, an a try a food cart on a smaller street. You’ll be surprised at the difference!

Choose a budget tour. Group tours in Thailand can often offer different “styles” of traveling. Choosing a budget option will significantly reduce in price, and often refers to the quality of housing you will be staying in. If you don’t mind hostels, which are for the most part pretty clean and hospitable in Thailand, this is a great option for you.

Touring Thailand With Kids

If you’re traveling to Thailand with your family , the beaches beckon you. With snorkeling, soft sand, and many chances to relax in save secluded beaches, there are countless of activities to keep children busy and allow parents to relax.

There are also a number of national parks in Thailand, offering varying degrees of difficulty in hikes and activities. Kids will love the opportunity to see nature up close, play around waterfalls, and learn about the many different plants and animals.

Multi Country Thailand Tours

A large portion of Thailand tours also visit a combination of the nearby Southeast Asia countries. These include Cambodia , Myanmar, Vietnam , Indonesia , Singapore, and Laos.

This can be a great way to visit a lot of different countries and get a feel for Southeast Asian culture, both similarities and differences.

Located in the center of Southeast Asia, Thailand is truly at the heart of the region. The geography of Thailand features many natural borders with neighboring countries. It has a mountainous border with Myanmar (Burma) to the north and west; a long stretch of the Mekong River separating Thailand from Laos to the north and east; and the Mekong River and the Dongrak Mountains delineating the border to Cambodia in the east.

Thailand offers very diverse attractions which include scuba diving sites, sandy beaches, tropical islands, a vibrant night-life, archaeological treasures, museums, hill tribes, rich flora and bird life, royal palaces, a great number of magnificent Buddhist temples and several UNESCO World Heritage sites. For any travelers that go to Asia, Thailand draws the greatest fascination.

The Buddhist religion, Thai cooking classes, and traditional Thai massages are popular interests of travelers.

Thai cuisine has become famous worldwide with its enthusiastic use of fresh herbs and spices. The Thai national festivals range from the fun-for-all water splashing Songkran to the almost fairytale like quality of Loy Krathong. This year Thailand was named the number 1 tourist destination according to Time Magazine.

The 5 Best Small Group Tours To Thailand For Bucket Lists

best small group tours to thailand

There are stacks of packages on the market that could make it onto lists of the best small group tours to Thailand. This is the fabled Land of Smiles, after all. It’s one of the planet’s most sought-after destinations, touting everything from gold-tipped Buddhist shrines to elephant-filled jungles, soaring mountain peaks to beaches so white you’d think they were made from talcum powder. Who wouldn’t want to come?

Honestly, if for some bizarre reason Thailand hasn’t yet sneaked its way onto your bucket list, now’s the time to change that. This country at the very heart of Southeast Asia has reigned as the OG of backpacking ever since the first hippies came in the 60s. Today, it can add luxury hotels and honeymoon islands to its resume, along with remote hill towns, motorbike loops, and cities that buzz and fizz with life all night and day.

This guide will home in on the best small group tours in Thailand for the coming season. They are the packages that we think really stand out from the crowd when it comes to traveling through the home of pad Thai noodles and mango sticky rice. Some are classy affairs with luxury accommodation and high price tags to match. Others are more firmly on the backpacker side of the equation. Let’s get started…

Table of Contents

Thailand Express with Real Gap

Koh Phangan Thailand

If you’re short on time but want to make sure you check off a whole stack of Thailand must-sees, there are few curated travel plans that can hit the notes as well as the Thailand Express tour with Real Gap. For one thing, it comes from a company that really cut their teeth offering budget-friendly romps for backpackers around the Land of Smiles, and we personally know a whole bunch of people who’ve completed their packages with only good words to say.

So, what’s included? The focus is really on southern Thailand and southern Thailand alone, apart from a day or two in buzzy Bangkok to get things rolling. After glugging cold Chang beers on the Khaosan Road with your new travel pals, you’ll hop south to Koh Phangan, an isle of white-sand beaches in the Thai Gulf (and the home of the Full Moon Party, no less, but you’ll need to time your trip with the moon itself if you want to be a part of that!).

The later stages of the trip take you across to the idyllic diving hub of Koh Tao and then across to western Thailand, where it’s the Phi Phi islands that take center stage. You’ll wrap the whole thing up with sunbathing sessions on gorgeous Monkey Beach, bouts of Muay Thai boxing, and partying in Phi Phi’s main town.

Tailor Made Thailand with Abercrombie & Kent

Cash not a problem? Like the luxury end of the spectrum? There’s a fantastically curated tour of Thailand from acclaimed upscale travel outfitters Abercrombie & Kent that might be just what you’ve been searching for. It strips back many of the packed itineraries on this list to keep it beautifully simple…

Phase one: Explore Bangkok. Phase two: Go north to Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai. Phase three: Go south to the islands. The whole thing takes 11 days in total and will set you back $10,000 per person. But you’re paying for something that’s a little more out of the ordinary than the typical backpacker romp.

You can rest assured that there won’t be any rough-around-the-edges hostels involved here. All your stays are top-draw hotels with boutique lodgings and beachfront locations and whatnot. There are also some proper A-lister frills included or added as optional extras, from bespoke massage therapies to cooking lessons with award-winning chefs. Nice.

Total Thailand Trip with Contiki

Erawan Falls Thailand

Just as the name implies, the Total Thailand trip is all about exploring the stand-out destinations of the Land of Smiles in one fell swoop. Over the course of two whole weeks, you’ll hop from north to south, seeing both halves of the country in a plan that includes reggae bars and night bazaars in the jungles and sunset cocktails by the side of the bath-warm Andaman Sea. Let’s dig a little deeper…

The first portion of Contiki’s Thailand flagship takes you through Central and Northern Thailand. They are fascinating corners of the nation that rarely command the covers of travel brochures like the beaches of the south. The starter is a jaunt to Kanchanaburi, a town steeped in WWII history but also right on the cusp of the gorgeously turquoise Erawan Waterfalls. Later, you pass through the ancient capital of old Siam and then onto the northern city of Chiang Mai , for shopping and Lanna culture.

The beach portion of the adventure is hardly a comprehensive run-around of Thailand’s finest sands. To do that would take months and months. What it is: A chance to hit some of the most famous spots on the Andaman coast. You’ll go island hopping in Krabi province to see towering rock stacks and bays laden with sea turtles. But you’ll also paddle through the narrow waterways of the Khao Sok National Park on your own little kayak.

Contiki are a tried-and-tested name in the industry with plenty of completed tours to their back. They run this adventure for around $2,500 per person with a promise to reduce carbon emissions where possible and offer plenty of pay-for addon options as you go.

Explore Northern Thailand with Intrepid Travel

Ask anyone who’s been to both the north and the south of the Land of Smiles and they’ll tell you just how different they are. While the south is about chilled beach towns and luxury resorts that spill into the Indian Ocean, the north is a rich vein of culture and tradition that has been influenced by ancient Siam, the Lanna kingdom, and even Burma. It’s the one to go for if history and heritage is your thing.

Intrepid Travel have a very simple three-stop trip that aims to take in the mainstay draws in the northern region. It begins in enthralling Old Sukhothai. That’s one of the oldest cities in the country, now anchored on an ancient archaeology park that has stupas and temples that date back through the centuries.

After that, you push on to the mountains around Chiang Mai. That ushers in one of the real highlights of the Intrepid Travel package – a homestay with a local family of farmers. You’ll learn all about the tos and fros of life in the rice paddies, visit craft markets, and cycle through the countryside under the sun.

The finale will be the city of Chiang Mai. It’s a wonder, with more historic Buddhist shrines than you can shake your mango juice at. It’s also seen as the shopping mecca of the nation, offering not one, not two, but three separate night market areas where you can buy just about anything if your haggling skills are up to it!

If all you’re interested in are the cities of Thailand, be sure to check out the Bangkok to Chiang Mai Express package from G Adventures . It makes a point of shunning the, shall we say, less cerebral destinations in the country for the culture-brimming towns that lie between the capital and the second city up north.

The good news is that there are plenty of places dotted in between both of those. They make for a natural itinerary. As such, the plan will take you through the Royal Palace and food bazaars of Bangkok, onto the WWII river town of Kanchanaburi, across to the temple-dotted wonder city of Ayutthaya, and then deep into the north for shopping in Chiang Mai itself.

It’s a short, sharp hit of Thai culture that’s low on sunbathing but big on curiosities. We’d also say it then puts you in great stead to hop on a flight down to the islands once you’re done and relax on the beaches at your own pace – connections from Chiang Mai to Phuket , Krabi, and Koh Samui go daily so there are plenty of departure choices.

The best small group tours in Thailand – our conclusion

If you’re searching for the best small group tours in Thailand then you’ve come to the right place. The adventures we’ve listed above are the ones that we think really stand out from the crowd when it comes to offering once-in-a-lifetime trips to the fabled Land of Smiles. They’ll take you to the glimmering bays of the gulf islands, the rock-topped beaches of the Andaman, the sleepless heart of Bangkok, and the mountain towns of the north, all while focusing on offering personalized support and treatment.

Show Full Itinerary

Welcome to Bangkok, Thailand. Your adventure kicks off with a welcome meeting at 6 pm tonight. If you arrive early, there's plenty to keep you occupied until then - perhaps take a walk around Chinatown and explore the vibrant streets, or head to the magnificent Grand Palace. Then, after tonight's important welcome meeting, it’s time to dig into some traditional tastes of Thailand. Bangkok is known for its street food, so you'll get the chance to head out with your leader and check out some roadside stalls around Khao Sarn Road. Later on, discover Bangkok’s nightlife and head out to one (or more) of the best local bars. Ask your guide for directions or grab your new travel mates and attempt to navigate the MRT subway train.

Good morning, it's time for an adventure. Take a train from Bangkok to Ayutthaya this morning. Ayutthaya was the capital in the Kingdom of Siam, but now the ruins of this old city form the Historical Park: an archaeological site that contains palaces, Buddhist temples, monasteries and statues. Take local tuk tuks on a visit to the Ayutthaya temple site, stopping by Wat Panan Choeng (adorned with a huge 19 metre Buddha image), Wat Yai Chai Mong Kol (with its 62 metre Victory Pagoda), and the famous Wat Maha That (the Buddhist temple with a striking figure head swallowed by tree roots). You’ll have the chance to buy some of Ayutthaya's famous Boat Noodles’ soup – trust us, they’re delicious. After your day exploring, hop on an overnight train up to Chiang Mai. You’ll have a few day-use rooms to share in Ayutthaya to freshen up before your train ride.

Arrive in Chiang Mai in the morning and transfer to your hostel. Even though check-in is at 2 pm, you’ll still be able to use the facilities, if you’d like. Chiang Mai is the perfect entrance to the Thai highlands, with misty mountains and colourful hillside villages awaiting you to explore. This will be your base for the next few days, as you’ll return here after your hillside trek. Today, spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing and exploring the city, then at night, why not get a group of you together and visit the night markets or the trendy bars in the happening Nimman area? You're on holiday, after all.

This morning at around 8 am, leave Chiang Mai and head to Mae Malai Market to stock up on some delicious fresh snacks for your trek. Then continue on to the start point of today’s 8km hike. Your destination for this evening is the Lahu Hilltribe Village of Pong Ngan Lahu (approximately 5-6 hours trekking time). Walk along the mountain ridge and take in the views of the natural forest and remote scenery. Enjoy a packed lunch in the beautiful surrounds of Huey Nam Dang National Park before continuing on to meet your local hosts. Pong Ngan Lahu Village is located beside the Mae Taeng River and you will arrive here late afternoon. Tonight, experience a local home-cooked dinner by the campfire, then take a walk around the village to chat with the locals. This is a really special opportunity to experience rural Thai life first-hand.

The best thing about being deep in the jungle in the morning is to enjoy the natural wake-up sounds of wildlife calls. After breakfast, you’ll have the opportunity to buy some handicrafts from local enterprises to help support the community. Then begin today’s trek through the storybook landscape of farmland and jungle (approximately 4-5hours, 10km), exploring other hilltribe villages along the way. Reach Mae Sae Village at approximately 2pm, where you’ll meet your transfer and drive down to Mok Fah Waterfall. After two long days of hiking, relax your legs by the gorgeous falls or take a dip in the water – there’s no rush this afternoon! Arrive back in Chiang Mai around 5pm and check into your accommodation. The rest of the day is free to relax and explore the city.

Today, head out on an orientation walk with your leader. Then you're free as a bird for the rest of the day in charming Chiang Mai. There are plenty of optional activities for you to consider today. We highly recommend checking out Wat Prasingh and Wat Chedi Luang temples. After this, perhaps stop by Chuan Chom Vocational Training Center for lunch or a massage. Here you'll learn about the work that they do to train the women from the correctional institution with skills to go back to society. Alternatively, head to Doi Suthep or try your hand at a local cooking class. It's totally up to you! At night, why not get the gang together and party the night away at a local bar.

With another day to explore Chiang Mai, you’re spoilt for options. Included for today is your chance to learn one of the world legend Martial arts, Muay Thai (Thai Boxing) this morning. Spend 1.5 hours exercising and learning the basics of Muay Thai with the pros, plus how to adapt yourselves to be the weapons and guard. Later in the evening, board an overnight train for Bangkok (approximately 13 hours). Soft sleeper class trains are used for the overnight journey, and they’ve got all you’ll need! The compartments are multi-share with air-conditioning and bunk beds that come with sheets and a pillow. Baggage travels in the carriage with you, and there's a food and drink service available on board.

Your train is scheduled to arrive into Bangkok in the early morning on Day 8 of the trip. The rest of the day is free to explore thecity as you wish. As this is a combination trip, your group leader and the composition of your group may change at this location. There will be a group meeting to discuss the next stage of your itinerary. We encourage you to attend this meeting, as this is a great chance to meet your new fellow travellers.

Today, explore some of Bangkok's most famous sights. Take an included visit with your group to the temple complex of Wat Pho, which houses the famous 46-metre-long statue of the Reclining Buddha – he sure looks comfortable. And how will you get there? Take a public boat down the Chao Phraya River and observe the beautiful scenery, getting off at Tha Tien Pier - within easy walking distance of Wat Pho. Afterwards, the afternoon is free for you to discover more of the city, like the Grand Palace or Jim Thompson House (or just more food, up to you). In the evening, be ready to head south on an overnight train to Surat Thani.

Arrive into Surat Thani this morning, continuing on an approximately 4-hour journey by public bus and ferry to Ko Samui. The island of Ko Samui has been a tourist hotspot for decades, and with good reason. You can swim, snorkel or relax in the waterfalls at Na Muang. Take a trip with the group around the island, visiting the 15-metre-tall Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai). In the evening, perhaps feast on a delicious curry with the group and then join in the party atmosphere that is Koh Samui's famous nightlife.

Spend a free day today however you’d like – swimming, lazing in the sun or more exploring. You may like to take an optional day tour to Ang Thong Marine National Park by either slow boat or speedboat. The park is an archipelago of over 40 islands in the Gulf of Thailand, featuring pristine beaches, jungle, mangroves and limestone mountains rising out of the sea. Take a swim at popular Ko Mae island and check out the saltwater lagoon of Thale Nai (Emerald Lake). For a quieter experience and some great snorkelling opportunities, head to the nearby islands of Ko Tao and Ko Nang Yuan. Ko Samui is also home to an elephant sanctuary, and you are able to come close to these gentle giants if you please. Watch them bathe, roam the fields and socialise with other elephants, all knowing that they are in a caring and peaceful environment.

This morning, head from Ko Samui to Khao Sok National Park. Take a songtaew and catch an early ferry from Samui Pier for a 1.5-hour journey to reach Don Sak Pier. Then, jump in a private vehicle to Chiew Larn Lake (approximately 2 hours), and take a traditional longtail boat for a calm 1-hour journey to reach your rafthouse. Keep your eyes out for wild bull elephants, gibbons and Spectacled langur (dusky leaf monkeys). Khao Sok National Park is the wettest spot in Thailand with some of the oldest jungle in the world. See loads of amazing limestone rock faces and, if you're lucky, monkeys playing here and there. Later on, take an evening safari with your group, where you’ll head by longtail boat deep in the jungle, keeping an eye and ear out for more animals. This is when they're most active. Afterwards, enjoy a traditional southern Thai meal at the rafthouse with your group.

Lucky you with a morning in the oldest evergreen rainforest in the world. Your awesome jungle rafthouse sits right inside the park, so you’ll have time this morning to catch the mist drifting along the lake as you search for wildlife in the jungle on a longail boat. Before lunch, take a jungle hike around the park, and depending on the season, see cascading waterfalls or head up high to a panoramic viewpoint. This place is paradise, especially if you love nature – if you're lucky there might be a glimpse of elephants, exotic Hornbills and water-loving Langur Monkeys deep inside the park. After lunch, you'll leave the rafthouse and head back to the pier on another longtail boat. Then, take a private vehicle to Ao Nang, on the Andaman Sea. Get ready, ‘cause you’ve arrived in a seaside paradise.

Ao Nang beach is on the southern Thai coast and is bursting with white sand and laidback vibes. One of the most popular places to go chill out is nearby Railay Beach, but this is an interesting one to get to. Even though it’s connected on the coast, the massive limestone karsts that surround the bay make it virtually impossible to access via land. That being said, take a longtail boat journey for a matter of minutes, and you’ll be washed up on the pristine shores. There’ll be some time to swim and relax on the sand. This place is thai-riffic, if you ask us.

Today is as clear as the emerald waters surrounding Ao Nang. Enjoy a free day to relax on the beach or participate in a variety of optional activities. Perhaps unwind with a massage or cook up something delicious in a Thai cooking class. Take a tour out to some of Krabi's naturally formed crystal pools and hot springs, swimming in the clear waters of the Emerald Lagoon while fish nibble at your toes. You might like to take a trip out to the quiet, pristine island of Ko Hong, where you can snorkel in the shallow reefs and kayak past cliffs to a hidden salt-water lagoon. The best thing is you can choose to do whatever you please, so soak it all up!

With no activities planned for today, you are free to depart the accommodation at any time. But that doesn’t mean that your Thailand adventure has to come to an end! Pull up a towel on Ao Nang beach, catch some rays and relax into the day. You deserve it.

Following your visit, continue your journey to the Hellfire Pass Memorial, a poignant tribute constructed to honour the memory of the Allied prisoners of war (POWs) and Asian conscripts who lost their lives while toiling on the most challenging sections of the Thai-Burma Death Railway.

Next, board a train at Nam Tok station and embark on a historic ride along the tracks that meander beside the Kwai Noi River. Traverse the original wooden viaduct painstakingly built by the Allied POWs, all while being enveloped by awe-inspiring landscapes. Take a moment to soak in the beauty of the surroundings.

  • At the Thai Cooking Class & Dinner, some dishes may include sour and spicy prawn soup, Thai green curry with chicken, mango sweet sticky rice and stri fried chicken with cashew (seasonal and subject to change).
  • Traditional Thai cooking uses market-fresh ingredients seasoned with a mix of herbs, spices, and condiments such as chili peppers and fish sauce. The main staple is rice. Most meals include a soup, a curry, a steamed or fried dish, and a salad.
  • On the tour extension, international influence is evident in the Khmer cuisine of Cambodia, where full flavor is created through the mix of herbs and spices such as sweet basil, Asian coriander, mint, lemongrass, and pepper. The base of almost all Cambodian dishes is rice or noodles, served with a curry, soup, or vegetable stir-fry. Grilled freshwater fish is popular, and the fermented fish paste known as prahok is a traditional seasoning.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the Thai baht in Thailand (plus the Cambodian riel on the tour extension).
  • On the tour extension in Cambodia, U.S. dollars are accepted everywhere, though change may be given in riel. Most hotels, restaurants, shops, taxis, buses, and airlines list their prices in U.S. dollars, but small transactions (less than a dollar) are usually conducted in riel. Always carry small amounts of riel for motorcycle taxis, snacks, and other small purchases.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers.
  • To ensure you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend you download the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. The app is free and provides important deadlines, entry requirements, your detailed itinerary, packing tips and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the chat feature in the app.
  • Wifi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wifi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will be leading your group throughout your journey in Thailand.
  • You will have a different Tour Director for your tour extension in Cambodia than on your main tour.
  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is our on tour emergency support team.
  • Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
  • This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
  • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
  • Thailand (and Cambodia on the tour extension) is 11 hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 11pm on tour.
  • When you travel with EF Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit, and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
  • Environment: When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
  • Animal Welfare: Take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart during included tour activities and your free time. Do not touch, do not feed, and maintain a respectful distance from wild animals. Wild animals encountered on tour should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior. If you feel we are not meeting these commitments, please share your feedback with us.
  • Animal Welfare: Avoid buying any exploitative wildlife products such as tortoise shell or shark fin soup.

Thailand Trip FAQs

When is the best time/month to travel to thailand.

With such a warm climate all year round, Thailand is such a great destination to travel. Whether you decide to explore the bustling streets of Bangkok, dive into the crystal-clear waters of the islands, or indulge in the vibrant street food in the north, Thailand has it all. Don't worry too much about the occasional tropical showers; it’s a refreshing break from the heat before the sun comes back out. We operate our small group tours in Thailand all year round.

How many days in Thailand is enough?

We recommend setting aside 2-3 weeks for your solo trip to Thailand. With so much to explore and experience, it's important to allow yourself enough time to fully immerse in the wonders of this incredible country. Navigating the various transportation options can be overwhelming at first, but fear not! Our tours in Thailand are designed to take away all the hassles and worries of planning your trip and travelling alone. We’ll handle all the tough/boring stuff, giving you the freedom to enjoy each and every day to the fullest 🙌🏼

Do I need a visa to travel Thailand?

For most travellers, Thailand is a very easy country to visit with a simple ‘Visa on Arrival’ process. This includes a long list of different countries including; UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia and most of Europe. Be sure to do your own research, as each country/passport will have different entry requirements, and the rules can often change. It's your responsibility to ensure you've ticked all the necessary boxes to enter Thailand hassle-free. *You must check your visa eligibility as we are not visa experts. The information above is general in nature. Here’s a blog that we put together to help; ‘An Unofficial Visa Guide to Asia & Australia’.

What injections/vaccinations do I need for Thailand?

Similar to visas, we are not medical professionals and would hate to give you false or misleading information. We recommend you book an appointment with your doctor or local pharmacy to discuss your travel plans and what precautions you need to be aware of. They will provide up-to-date guidance and will no doubt have your vaccination/immunisation history on file. All the destinations and areas we travel to are generally low-risk, but best to be on the safe side! Click here for a useful resource provided by the UK NHS website.

What about COVID-19 travel restrictions in Thailand?

It's always a good idea to check whether your destination or airline requires you to be COVID-19 vaccinated or tested to travel. It's your responsibility to ensure you arrive on tour with us in Thailand without any issues. Click here for a useful resource provided by the UK government.

What kind of people join these group tours?

It doesn't matter whether you're travelling solo, with a friend, or adventuring as a couple. Our trips attract a variety of different people from all corners of the world with a common goal of having the BEST time with like-minded people. Our trips are super popular for people looking to explore new places but don't want the worry of doing it alone or don't have the time to plan a trip themselves. Jumping on a group tour in Thailand is a super popular, convenient and hassle-free way to travel!

Are group tours in Thailand worth it? Why would I not just travel solo?

Planning a solo trip can be daunting, requiring careful consideration and a lot of time. But guess what? Our Thailand group tours are designed to make your life easier and your travel experience stress-free! From the moment you land, we handle all the logistics and nitty-gritty details, including airport pickup, comfortable accommodations, seamless transportation, engaging local activities, and delicious meals. With our tours, you can kick back, relax, and enjoy your adventure in Thailand, knowing that every aspect has been expertly taken care of.

I am looking to come alone, do many people travel solo?

Yes, absolutely! Most people actually come alone, with there often being a few people travelling together either as friends or as a couple. Our trips are perfect for solo travellers as you'll make friends from the moment you arrive, and you'll have the confidence and security of doing it as a group.

How much money do you need for 2 weeks in Thailand?

Once you've booked your flights, paid off your trip and got some solid travel insurance, you'll be all set for that Thailand adventure. We suggest bringing no less than £300/$400, but this should be the bare minimum. We suggest working from an average of £400-500/$500-700 over 2 weeks, this will cover things like shopping, drinks, extra meals and anything else you fancy treating yourself to... maybe a few massages!?

What should I book first, the flights or the tour?

Great question! We always suggest getting the trip locked in first before booking flights. This way, you won’t be left disappointed if the trip goes full and you’ve already booked your flights. There are usually plenty of flight tickets available, but the spaces are limited with our trips, and the trips fill up pretty fast. We suggest booking your trip first, followed by your flight, and then purchasing your travel insurance to cover all eventualities. Getting these three out of the way as soon as possible is a good idea.

How far in advance do you recommend booking my trip to Thailand?

The average traveller typically books their trip 3-4 months in advance, which usually means there are plenty of options when it comes to dates. If you decide to book last minute, be prepared for limited availability. If you have your heart set on a specific date or trip, consider placing a deposit right away.

I’ve been looking at a few companies, what makes Feel Free Travel different?

If you're asking this question, you've probably not read what our incredible travellers are saying in the reviews . You would have noticed already that we are insanely passionate about sharing life-changing experiences with our groups. When we travel, it's more like a group of mates with that one friend who thankfully knows where they're going. Our group sizes are small and intimate, averaging 12-16 travellers. If you've not already, click here to join the 'Feel Free Family - Facebook Group' .

Is it possible to book a private tour of Thailand with a group of friends?

We specialise in bringing solo travellers together who arrive as complete strangers and soon become best friends/extended travel family. With that being said, we have been known to offer private tours subject to availability. If you send us an email to [email protected] one of the team will be in touch and see what we can do… no promises!

Trip Overview

Arrival in thailand.

Welcome to Thailand! Take included transportation with your new group of friends to our first stop--the bustling city of Bangkok.

Find yourself in the capital of Thailand, a modern metropolis with roots going back to the 15th century.

Relax and recover after a long flight and enjoy our opening dinner with your new friends as you begin to acclimate to Southeast Asia.

Grand Palace & Tour of Bangkok

Start your first morning in Thailand exploring the Grand Palace--a former residence of the Kings of Siam until 1925.

Head over to Bangkok's largest and oldest temple complex, Wat Pho, and walk alongside the 150 foot long Reclining Buddha.

After lunch, absorb the fascinating sights at Pak Khlong Talat, Bangkok's largest flower market, and roam the cultural alleys of Old Bangkok.

After a delicious Thai dinner, stroll through a night market taking in the sights and sounds of nightlife in Bangkok.

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and be driven to the world-famous Ayutthaya Historical Park.

Founded in 1351, the ancient city of Ayutthaya is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take your time and walk amongst the ancient trees which have grown around the heads of the Buddhas.

In the evening, indulge in street food before taking the night train to Chiang Mai, one of the top destinations in the world.

Chiang Mai Exploration

Wake up in Chiang Mai, named one of the top 25 destinations in the world by Travel and Leisure. Start your day with a warm bowl of khao soi, a traditional Northern Thai breakfast.

Enjoy a relaxing morning with a traditional Thai massage or get a workout by joining a Muay Thai class.

In the afternoon, head up the mountain to Doi Suthep Temple. Watch the sunset over the city while listening to the monks chant evening prayers. Upon return, enjoy local Thai dishes for dinner and head out to explore the nightlife.

Thai Waterfalls

After breakfast, enjoy a short hike to the Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls where you'll spend the morning climbing and swimming in the falls before enjoying a Thai picnic lunch.

Once back in the city, take an optional cooking class where you will learn how to make local Thai delicacies or explore some temples in the city.

Explore the night market of Chiang Mai. Eat pad thai and listen to live music at Chill Out Market Night BarZaar.

Elephant Sanctuary

Get ready for a day you'll remember forever at an elephant sanctuary.

Here you will learn about Asian elephants, conservation efforts, and why ending elephant riding is so important.

Spend time feeding these gentle giants while observing elephants enjoying the natural surroundings of the sanctuary.

After this incredible experience, return to Chiang Mai for a delicious Lanna style dinner.

Say goodbye to Chiang Mai and fly to Krabi on your included flight. Enjoy the change of scenery as you make your way to the beach!

Once you land, head to the pier and take a long-tail boat to Railay Beach. This small peninsula is only accessible by boat because of the large limestone cliffs that cut it off from the mainland.

Rent a kayak for an hour or cool off with a swim. Enjoy the sunset on the beach and settle into the slow pace of beach life with a delicious meal of Thai cuisine.

Island Tour

After breakfast, it’s time to island hop!

Enjoy a traditional boat ride out to the islands of the Andaman Sea. Cruise past limestone karsts jutting out of the emerald green waters and spot birds nesting in the cliffs.

Continue the adventure to protected marine parks of astonishing beauty and white sand beaches. After lunch, spend time exploring the shoreline.

Enjoy a beautiful sunset and conversations with friends before dinner.

Railay Beach

After breakfast, gear up to enjoy some of the best rock climbing in the world. You may even get to rappel out of a limestone cave onto the sand below.

Afterward, walk the towering limestone cliffs and stop for a photo of the monkeys as you make your way to Phra Nang beach.

Depending on the tide, walk across the ocean floor to an isolated island in the Andaman Sea or explore some of the caves that dot the shoreline.

Relaxation & Departure

Say goodbye to Thailand with one last swim in the sea.

Afterward, take your included transportation to the airport, or continue the adventure on your own.

Check out our trip to Indonesia or Vietnam & Cambodia if you'd like to explore more of Southeast Asia!

"I just finished the Thailand trip with under30 and it was honestly the best trip of my life!! It was so well planned, the leaders were fun and down to enjoy every bit of the trip with us. It was so nice that everything is planned for you. All you had to do is show up and they gave you amazing opportunities to do all these fun things on your trip. I’m sad I’m home and it’s over, but will do another under30 trip in a second!" -Danielle B.

Facebook reviews

"I just got home last evening from a trip to Thailand and I have to say that amazing is a huge understatement. I cannot put into words how much gratitude I have for this experience and to express how much this amazing country has given to me. Away from personal experience, if you are reading this as someone who’s looking to looking into going abroad, you absolutely need to book with Under30. I’ve used another company in the past and I have to say that the company you book with makes a LOT of difference. Everyone on my trip was fantastic. If you’re afraid of going on a group trip, I was too. I didn’t think anyone would understand me or that I’d have much in common and I was pleasantly proven wrong. Though everyone has diverse backgrounds, you’re going to find something in common with everyone and you’re never alone on the trip." -Lauren A.

google reviews

"Recently came back from Thailand with under30 and I’m so glad I decided to go on this trip. This was my first trip like this and the farthest I have ever traveled. Tim and Tor made everyone feel so comfortable and were so welcoming! There’s no way I would have planned and done all the activities that we did and I’m so happy I decided to travel this way. I had so many great experiences and formed awesome friendships. This will definitely not be my last trip with Under30!" -Camille S.
