Weather at the start/finish city of Barcelona at 1:35 PM, local time: 21C (69F), sunny, with the wind from the southwest at 27 km/hr (16 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Remco Evenepoel's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Remco Evenepoel became the first reigning World Champion to win multiple stages at the Volta a Catalunya, finishing the week in style with a victory on the streets of Barcelona, which he added to the one he scored atop of La Molina. It was the Belgian’s 40th pro victory, and his third since conquering the rainbow jersey in Australia, last September.

Sunday afternoon brought another scintillating battle between the rainbow jersey and Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), the former making his move with 28 kilometers to go, after Soudal Quick-Step softened up the peloton. On the Montjuic, Remco put down a searing attack, similar to the one he produced at last year’s Liège–Bastogne–Liège, and the Slovenian was the only one who could respond. On the descent, the duo was joined by Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates), but just for a brief moment, as another attack on the penultimate climb dispatched the Spaniard.

The two continued to extend their lead over the peloton, at one point one minute separating them from the chasing group, and with ten kilometers to go it became clear that for the fifth time this week they would be involved in the fight for victory. Going under the flamme rouge, Evenepoel was ideally positioned in his opponent’s wheel, from where he came out 150 meters from the line with a powerful sprint that netted the team’s 18th victory of the season.

“I am very happy! I came here with the goal of taking a stage win and finishing on the overall podium, and I did much more than that. On top of everything, I had an incredible team by my side, the strongest in the whole race, and this makes me very proud”, said 23-year-old Remco, who also took home the KOM and youth jerseys. “I knew it was going to be very hard against one of the best riders in the world, but I tried my best, kept attacking on the Montjuic, and came close to winning the general classification, so the signs are good.”

Weather at the finish at Molins de Rei at 1:00 PM, local time: 19C (66F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the south at 23 km/hr (14 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: There was one non-starter: Lukasz Owsian (Arkea-Samsic).

Here's the report from GC leader Primoz Roglic's Team Jumbo-Visma:

Primoz Roglic has successfully defended his leader's jersey during the sixth stage of the Volta a Catalunya. Remco Evenepoel tried to pressure the leader in the stage to Molins de Rei, but the Slovenian did not give in.

Team Jumbo-Visma maintained control in the early stages of the race. Roglic was alert at the first intermediate sprint, taking three bonus seconds to Evenepoel's two. The Belgian made up the difference later in the stage when he took the most bonification seconds.

Just before the summit of the final climb, Evenepoel launched an attack and almost immediately spotted Roglic in his wheel. The pair rode at the front for a while but were later reeled in by the now depleted peloton. Kaden Groves won the bunch sprint.

The peloton rolls out from the town of Martorell.

"The end of the stage was a real show", Roglic said. "Riding against Remco is never boring. We were expecting something, and we were on guard when he attacked. There is one more day to go. Remco has not given up yet, so we must also be alert tomorrow. It will be full steam ahead from the start."

Sports director Merijn Zeeman had seen a tough race all day. "This was a super challenging stage. It took a long time for a lead group to form. This was due to the peloton's high pace. It was a day where a lot of teams missed their chance. We took control, parried Evenepoel's attacks, and successfully defended the leader's jersey. We finished the day as we started it, with a 10-second lead in the general classification. Two of the best riders in the world entertained the crowd today. And tomorrow, we anticipate another intense battle."

Here's the report from second-place Remco Evenepoel's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) went head-to-head for the fourth time this week at the oldest race in the Iberian Peninsula, on the beast of a climb called Le Port (8.4km, 8.8%) – which was tackled at the end of the 176.6km stage five.

Victorious Wednesday atop La Molina, Evenepoel entered the day tied on time at the top of the general classification, and Soudal Quick-Step acted like a team on a mission, pulling the entire stage and bringing back the breakaway on the lower slopes of the special-category ascent. The World Champion waited for the last five kilometers to show his cards, launching a powerful surge that distanced all but one rider, his GC rival.

Remco and Roglic continued together, trading attacks until 300 meters to go, when the Slovenian ramped up the pace and gained a couple of meters and won the stage ahead of Remco, who now finds himself trailing by ten seconds in the standings ahead of the weekend’s two stages.

“Maybe I shouldn’t have countered. I started my sprint early and I think this was a big mistake. It’s not the end of the world, on the contrary, a valuable lesson from which I will learn going into the next races. We’ll continue fighting here, we have two more stages left, and we’ll try to do our best”, said Remco, who remains the best young rider of the race.

The race: Here's the report from third-place Corbin Strong's Team Israel-Premier Tech.

Israel – Premier Tech took its second podium place this Thursday as Corbin Strong sprinted to third place on stage 4 of Volta a Catalunya.

“I’m really happy with today. The boys did an awesome job”, Strong said after the line.

After being attentive at the beginning of the stage, making sure no dangerous groups would get away without being represented, the IPT riders rallied around team leader Michael Woods and Strong to make sure the young Kiwi would get a chance to sprint for the win.

Daryl Impey took the front of the peloton on the last few kilometers with Guilluame Boivin and Strong in his wheel. On the final stretch, Boivin performed a great leadout for Strong who launched his sprint with about 150m to go. Ultimately, Kaden Groves took the victory, while Strong had to settle for third.

“There were a few corners in the final but the boys rode awesomely. Guillaume [Boivin] did a really good leadout for me at the end but unfortunately, I didn’t have the legs to finish it off. However, I’m still really happy with third”, Strong explained.

In the general classification, Woods moved up one spot so he’s now sixth overall before Friday’s steep mountain top finish.

Weather at the finish at La Molina (Girona) at 12:55 PM, local time: 15C (59F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the south at 10 km/hr (6 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: All stage two finishers began today's stage at about 11:00 AM.

Here's the report from stage winner Remco Evenepoel's Team Soudal Quick-Step:

Remco Evenepoel became the youngest Belgian in 37 years to win a Volta a Catalunya stage, at the end of a day that saw his Soudal Quick-Step teammates destroy the peloton and control the race in spectacular fashion, before setting up the World Champion for the last kilometers of La Molina – one of the race’s traditional finishes.

“I am very happy about this win, and at the same time, proud of my teammates! They showed what a strong squad we are, did a magnificent job the entire day, and I am delighted that it all paid off”, a visibly satisfied Remco said immediately after the stage.

The day was a rather quiet one, following the traditional script of a group going clear soon after the start, until the first ramps of Coll de la Creueta, where Soudal Quick-Step stormed to the front of the field. The furious tempo pushed by our riders visibly whittled down the bunch, leaving only some 30-odd men in there by the time the special-category climb was crested.

Our guys continued to work tirelessly at the front, both in the downhill and on the first part of the last ascent, where Ilan Van Wilder drove the tempo with Remco behind him. Evenepoel then put the hammer down on a short steep section with five kilometers to go, just before a descent, bolting away from the group and dispatching everyone, except Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma).

Exuding fantastic confidence, the 23-year-old relentlessly pushed hard going under the red kite and had the final say, launching a huge out-of-the-saddle acceleration in the final hairpin bend that not only landed him the victory, but also put him on the same time with the overall leader.

“It’s amazing! I had good legs, I felt that I was getting better and better and had a lot of trust in my team. I knew they were capable of making the race as hard as possible from the penultimate climb and that’s what they did, following our plan. In the finale, I knew that I was fast and really wanted to go for it, so I made sure of being first into the last corner and kept pushing. It’s a victory that makes me happy and only adds to our motivation for the next stages”, Evenepoel concluded after signing off Soudal Quick-Step’s 15th win of the season.

Weather at the city of Camprodon, on the route, 22 km from the finish, at 12:40 PM, local time: 14C (58F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 5% chance of rain.

The race: The offical start was given at 12:50. Chris Hamilton (DSM) & Anthony Delaplace (Arkéa-Samsic) did not start.

Primoz Roglic has sprinted to second place in the second stage of the Volta a Catalunya. On the final climb to the Vallter 2000 ski resort, Roglic reacted well to an attack from his rivals, but the Slovenian was beaten in the sprint by Italy's Giulio Ciccone.

The stage race saw the peloton climb for the first time this week. After more than 165 kilometres, it reached the finish line at an altitude of more than two thousand metres. The traditional breakaway was caught at the foot of the climb, and the favourites contended for victory.

On the climb, Team Jumbo-Visma took control and was soon joined by other teams. Colombian Esteban Chaves was the first to make a move. He opened up a lead of over half a minute but was unable to hold on. Remco Evenepoel accelerated in the final kilometres with Roglic and Ciccone on his wheel. After catching up to Chaves, the trio engaged in a sprint battle for victory. The Italian proved the fastest.

Roglic remained in the lead of the general classification. "I can live with this performance", he said. "It was the first time in a long time that I raced at over two thousand metres. I am ecstatic about the team's work. My teammates did the work during the day, which freed me up to focus on the last climb. For the outside world, it's just Remco against Primoz this week. Nonetheless, you can see several cyclists vying for victory. I'm not surprised by Ciccone's shape; he was also in good shape in Tirreno-Adriatico. He deserved to win today."

After being sidelined for a considerable time with a shoulder injury, the 33-year-old rider is in good condition. "I am delighted with my form and enjoy racing again. Today and yesterday, I was able to get good results. I'm hoping to carry on like this with the squad next week. We will do our best."

Tour de France: the Inside Story

Weather at the start/finish city of Sant Feliu de Guíxols at 1:00 PM, local time: 15C (59F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the east a 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is a 1% chance of rain.

The race: The official start was given at 1:06 PM. There was two non-starters, Hugo Hofstetter (Arkea-Samsic) & Luke Plapp (INEOS Grenadiers).

Here's the stage one summary from second-place Remco Evenepoel's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

On his first day of racing in Europe in 2023, Remco Evenepoel took second place in a close fought sprint with rival Primoz Roglic, at the end of the opening stage of Volta Catalunya.

The 164km stage started and finished in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, where soon after the start a five man breakaway was formed, who soon established a lead fhat at one point peaked at close to 5 minutes. However, the peloton were determined not to let them ruin their day and reeled the breakaway back in on the run in to the now famous punchy finish.

This is led to a head to head between Remco and Roglic, with the young Belgian impressively coming from several bike lengths back, but he fell agonisingly short of overhauling the Slovenian.

This all means that Remco will swap his rainbow jersey for the competition’s young rider’s for the second stage, which culminates in a summit finish at the ski station in Valter.

Profiles & Route Volta a Catalunya 2023

Profiles . The Volta a Catalunya will be taking place from the 20th to the 27th of March in 2023 and it promises to be an exciting edition with three summit finishes throughout the seven-day Catalan stage-race, which will feature aswell the classic explosive finale in Barcelona.

The race will take place in the northeastern province of Catalunya where many pro riders live and train throughout the year. It is no surprise then that the race is marked by it's many hilly and mountainous stages. Whilst the sprinters will have two opportunities, the climbers will have three and two other days are set to be very mixed between a possible GC fight, aswell as puncheurs and breakaway specialists to fight for wins.

PREVIEW | Volta a Catalunya 2023 - Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel's final pre-Giro battle. Landa, Yates, Almeida, Hindley and Carapaz promise climbing showdown

Profiles & Route Volta a Catalunya 2023

Stage one to Sant Feliu de Guíxols will be a loop, with the coastal town receiving the start of the Catalan event. It is a tricky day, one that is designed for the sprinters, however those who are able to climb as it is by far a flat affair. A 5-kilometer climb at 5.3% will make for a tough challenge near the finish, but if that is not enough, the closing kilometers are very rolling themselves and will present a serious challenge for the heavier riders.

PREVIEW | Volta a Catalunya 2023 stage 1 - Bryan Coquard and Ethan Hayter main favourites for opening sprint stage

Profiles & Route Volta a Catalunya 2023

Stage two will open up the GC fight, with the famous summit finish to Vallter 2000. By some this could be considered the queen stage, but being the first of three summit finishes is likely to see a more conservative race. Still, with the finale at over 2100 meters of altitude, gradients of 7.5% for 11.4 kilometers is enough to make meaningful differences.

PREVIEW | Volta a Catalunya 2023 stage 2 - Roglic and Evenepoel's second battle at 2100-meter high mountain finish

Profiles & Route Volta a Catalunya 2023

Over the past few years the stage to La Molina has proven to be one of the most frequent. All the riders who've been at the race will know what to expect, it's a tricky mountain stage. It will feature the 18.5-kilometer ascent of the Coll de la Creueta before the final climb. La Molina is split in two, with the first part having 8 kilometers at 6.4%, where attacks are expected. There's a good chance a large group of climbers will pull through though, and instead battle the win out in the final explosive hilltop.

PREVIEW | Volta a Catalunya 2023 stage 3 - Roglic, Evenepoel and Ciccone expected to battle for second consecutive summit finish

Profiles & Route Volta a Catalunya 2023

Stage four will be fit for the sprinters, although a breakaway could carry significant danger. The start in Llívia is at over 1000 meters of altitude and they will climb La Molina early in the day. From 1700 to less than 200 meters in altitude is a big difference and the speeds will be very high throughout the rest of the day into Sabadell.

PREVIEW | Volta a Catalunya 2023 stage 4 - Sprinters and breakaway opportunists to battle for rare flat finale

Profiles & Route Volta a Catalunya 2023

8.4 kilometers at 9%. That is what awaits the riders on the fifth day of racing in Catalunya in what will be the toughest summit finish of the race and perhaps the queen stage. It is a day where the focus will be all about the final climb to Lo Port, where the gradients will tighten and see a fierce battle between the GC riders for success.

PREVIEW | Volta a Catalunya 2023 stage 5 - Evenepoel and Roglic battle for overall win at Lo Port summit finish

Profiles & Route Volta a Catalunya 2023

Stage six will be another tricky day, with a lot of rolling roads which may lead to a sprint or a breakaway win. A late attack aswell isn't to be ignored, as the roads into Molins de Rei feature quite a few of small but explosive ascents.

PREVIEW | Volta a Catalunya 2023 stage 6 - Hilly day sees GC fight, sprint and breakaway all as possibilities

Profiles & Route Volta a Catalunya 2023

Finally, the traditional day into Barcelona. A short but intense stage, it will see a climb early in the day where the breakaway should be formed and inside the final circuit it will not be easy to bring things back. There will be six laps of the Montjuic circuit in the capital of the region. The steepest section features 900 meters at 10% and it will be a brutal challenge for all riders seeking to preserve or attack the race.

PREVIEW | Volta a Catalunya 2023 stage 7 - Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic's final climbing clash before Giro d'Italia

- Soudal Quick-Step sports director Geert Van Bondt: "Catalunya is a beautiful race, with a parcours which gives an opportunity to a lot of riders. Of course, the climbers are favoured, but we should also see some days for the sprinters and the puncheurs. Our team is a strong one, with Mikel back in action after a strong Algarve. Him and Ilan, who had a solid UAE Tour, can fight for a good general classification. Our squad comprises guys who can be in the mix for a stage victory but also riders who can go in the breakaway, so the confidence and motivation for next week are quite high."

- Luke Roberts, Team DSM coach: "Stage racing continues for us at the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya as we take on a varied parcours throughout the week. With a mix of flat stages, rolling terrain that suits the breakaway specialists and versatile sprinters, plus some tricky mountain top finishes, we expect some exciting racing. It's a good race for us to continue our development and sharpen our race craft with the younger block we have here. Throughout the week we want to ride well as a unit and create opportunities for ourselves through good teamwork and aggressive racing, taking a day-by-day approach."

- The 2022 Volta a Catalunya is being held March 21-27.

- Christian Pömer, Bora-Hansgrohe Sports Director: "Congratulations to Peter Sagan and the entire BORA-hansgrohe squad for their performance, effort and the victory in today's stage. It was truly a team victory and it wasn't an easy one. With Mohorič and other strong riders in the breakaway as well as all the climbers in the chase it was hard to calculate the effort. In the middle of the race there was a section with winding roads, up and down, and we were afraid Mohorič would be able to take the win. That's why we went all in from the middle of the race to bring the break under control and in the final kilometres once again we witnessed a fantastic effort by the entire team."

- Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) following his Stage 6 victory: "I came here after Tirreno-Adriatico and Milano-Sanremo without a break and we had six hard stages here at the Volta Catalunya, so I'm a bit tired. I'm happy with this victory, it's a good start to the season, especially after what I went through the two months before coming here. It wasn't an easy period but it looks nice now. We have one last stage tomorrow, a short but fast one, and I think the teams fighting for the GC will control it.  We'll see however how it plays out."

- Lennard Kamna (Bora-Hansgrohe) after his Stage 5 victory: "I’m very happy with this victory. Yesterday, I tried this already, but I went a little bit early. I didn't have the best legs in the first part of the stage today and I just made it to the group. However, on the last climb I was feeling strong again, so I gave it another shot and I’m happy that in the end, it worked out. It’s a fabulous feeling – it’s my first race of the season and it’s great to be here in good shape and to take a victory. I had a really good feeling at the moment I attacked. Everyone was watching one another and they were a little annoyed that we weren’t working well, so it seemed the right time to try. There are a couple of stages still left, so we’ll always keep trying."

- Lennard Kamna (Bora-Hansgrohe) won Stage 5. Adam Yates (INEOS Grenadiers) remains leader on G.C.

- Esteban Chaves (Team BikeExchange) after winning Stage 4: "It was hard because there was a lot of headwind and it was this type climb where you can save a lot of energy on the wheel, but it was a good move, I could stay in front and the legs were really well. The team worked really well to keep me in a really good position, myself, Simon (Yates) and Lucas (Hamilton) and so I tried, I thought why not."

- Esteban Chaves (Team BikeExchange) won Stage 4. Adam Yates (INEOS Grenadiers) retained the overall race lead.

- Wilco Kelderman (Bora-Hansgrohe) after Stage 3: "I think it was a good day, this is my first race and in my view, I can be satisfied with my legs and the feeling. The team did a good job all the way to the last climb and I was brought into a good position. It was a fast ascent with quite a number of attacks and accelerations in the final 10km. I tried to attack myself with about 4km to go but I still haven't reached my peak power because of the lack of racing. However, I think it was a good stage for us."

- Adam Yates (INEOS Grenadiers) won Stage 3 and is new leader in the general classification.

- João Almeida (Deceuninck-Quickstep) after taking the race lead following Stage 2: "I wasn’t expecting this before the stage, but I felt good today and did my best in this time trial. Coming into the race I knew that the time trial was one of my weapons and I could gain some time thanks to it, and it’s great so see I’ve done that. I want to do a good general classification, but we’ll take it day by day and see what the big climbs will bring."

- Rohan Dennis (INEOS Grenadiers) won the Stage 2 ITT. Joao Almeida (Deceuninck-Quickstep) is new leader on G.C.

- Official site ticker and leaderboard LIVE here .

- André Schulze, Sports Director: "Our initial plan was to work for Peter and create the conditions for a bunch sprint. We kept the race under control but about halfway through the stage, on the first categorised climb, Movistar took over at the front and set a very strong pace. That big move resulted in half of the peloton getting dropped, including Peter. At the top of the climb they had reduced the gap to about 50 seconds but they weren't able to come back. So, we changed our strategy and jumped with our GC guys. That worked out well because they were working well and were focused. Lennard then made a very good move with about 25km to go and got away in the successful four-man break. In the finale, he tried a few times to attack and go solo but it was difficult. All in all, I think we can be satisfied with the effort and team spirit in this hard stage."

- Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe): "We rode a strong race and controlled it well. In the final part of the stage I had a good eye and I was part of the decisive attack. Unfortunately, the finale wasn't a perfect one. On the one hand, I am happy because my legs are good and I am in a promising shape after the winter break, but to finish fourth in a group of four, well, is disappointing though."

- Andreas Kron (Lotto-Soudal) won Stage 1 and is first leader in the general classification.

- Lucas Hamilton (Team BikeExchange): "I am looking forward to racing Catalunya, it is in the region that I spend a lot of time training, so I look forward to getting stuck in. I have never done this race but from all accounts it looks really tough, so I'm happy to try and get another good stage race under the belt soon after Paris-Nice. I learnt a lot riding the GC for the first-time last week and now I’m really looking forward to carrying that momentum into Catalunya and having another crack and we will have a really strong team in the climbs."

- Team BikeExchange roster for the 2021 Volta a Catalunya:

Brent Bookwalter (USA) Esteban Chaves (COL) Lucas Hamilton (AUS) Tanel Kangert (EST) Callum Scotson (AUS) Dion Smith (NZL) Simon Yates (GBR)

- Simon Yates (Team BikeExchange): "I had a change of plan, originally I was only going to do Tirreno and then Tour of the Alps but in Tirreno I felt like I missed some racing, some race rhythm, so it looked like a good idea to come and race Catalunya to try and find that intensity and take another step forward. We have a very strong team there so I think as a group, as a team, we can do a good ride. I had good form in Tirreno so we will see what we can do."

- Deceuninck-Quickstep team lineup for the 2021 Volta a Catalunya:

João Almeida (POR) Rémi Cavagna (FRA) Josef Cerny (CZE) Dries Devenyns (BEL) James Knox (GBR) Fausto Masnada (ITA) Pieter Serry (BEL) Directeurs sportifs: Klaas Lodewyck (BEL), Geert Van Bondt (BEL)

- Quick-Step sports director Klaas Lodewyck: "We have a strong and very motivated squad and we aim to do a good general classification with João. He was up there in the Middle East and then in Tirreno-Adriatico and we hope the trend will continue in Catalunya. The parcours is very hard, and the Vallter 2000 and Port Ainé climbs will make for some significant gaps in the standings, but at the same time, also the ITT can play a big role in the final outcome. We must not forget about the hilly circuit on the last day, because it’s usually raced full gas and even there a lot can happen. Overall, we expect it to be a very demanding race, but we are confident in our chances of getting some nice results."

- Team DSM lineup for the 2021 Volta a Catalunya:

Thymen Arensman (NED) Chad Haga (USA) Chris Hamilton (AUS) Jai Hindley (AUS) Max Kanter (GER) Nicholas Roche (IRL) Michael Storer (AUS)

- Luke Roberts, Team DSM coach: "We're looking forward to racing in Catalunya and the 100th edition of the race with our main goal for the week to target good stage results. There are some possibilities for Max in the sprint and it's also likely that some of the stages could go to the breakaway where we will aim to be active with our guys. For Chad, Chris and Jai it is a semi-home race, as they're based in Catalunya during the season. Chad will be eager for the stage two time trial and Jai looks to be in quite good shape after performing well in Paris-Nice, ready to test himself on the two mountain top finishes which will ultimately decide the GC."

- 2021 Volta a Catalunya stage schedule/times:

- Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana Pro Team) won the 2019 Volta a Catalunya. There was no 2020 edition due to Covid-19.

- The 2021 Volta a Catalunya is being held March 22-28.

- 2019 race route details here .

- Rafal Majka (Bora-Hansgrohe) after Stage 6: "The plan was to go for Jay, but he hadn’t the best legs today, therefore we went for Davide in the final kilometres. He was so strong in the last kilometres; his attack was really impressive. Unfortunately, the peloton was fast and caught him at the Flamme rouge. I was in a good position after the last roundabouts, so I took my chance and came in ninth. With this result I also secured my spot in the GC as well."

- Jens Zemke, Bora-Hansgrohe Sports Director: "We pushed our team pretty hard for this race and the boys delivered well. Today’s goal was to protect Rafal for the top 10 in the GC and to give Jay the possibility in a sprint. Davide used a moment to attack with 5km to go and was only caught 500m before the finish. We played all or nothing, but we were close to achieve the next surprise."

- Official site updates LIVE here .  Cyclingnews ticker LIVE here .

- Wilco Kelderman (Team Sunweb) had to abandon the race following a crash during Stage 5.  Team Sunweb doctor Anko Boelens: "An x-ray has revealed Wilco has broken his left collarbone and suffered a neck vertebrae fracture in the fall. Our first impression is that the fracture is stable. He will most likely need surgery for the collarbone when returning back to the Netherlands. Once we've completed more checks, we will be able to give an update on the estimated recovery time in the coming days."

- Results: Schachmann wins stage 5 .  (Cyclingnews) - Lopez keeps race lead as Bora-Hansgrohe rider foils sprinters.

- Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) after his Stage 5 victory: "I knew, I am in a really good shape, therefore I wanted to achieve another stage victory at the Volta a Catalunya. After a second and fourth place, I knew I had to try it again, because there are not so many stages left. As the group attacked I joined them and with 20k to go, I thought, that we’ll have a good chance to make it to the finish. On the descent I attacked and just pulled to give it everything. I am so happy with the outcome and that I collected the points to now lead the points classification."

- Christian Pömer (directeur sportif, Bora-Hansgrohe): "We went into this year’s Volta a Catalunya with one goal, a stage win. And for this goal we worked consequently from stage 1. Yesterday we nearly got it, but today it worked out perfectly. Max did a great job, huge respect. He showed a pure masterpiece."

- Max Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) won Stage 5.  Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana Pro Team) remains overall leader.

- News: Nairo Quintana edged out of Catalunya podium for second straight day .  (Cyclingnews) - Movistar rider moves into fourth overall on La Molina.

- Results: Lopez wins on La Molina .  (Cyclingnews) - Astana rider takes race lead.

- Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana Pro Team) won Stage 4 and took over the race lead on G.C.

- Jens Zemke, Sports Director, Bora-Hansgrohe after Stage 4: "After yesterday’s stage, which was disappointed for us, the guys showed fighting spirit today. We went into the day’s big breakaway with Gregor and Max, both guys rode an offensive race and took control from the beginning. But the whole team did well today, and Gregor got rewarded with a strong second place. But also, Rafal rode with the best and finished 9th, moving up to 10thin the GC, which was our plan."

- Gregor Mühlberger (Bora-Hansgrohe): "I am really happy with my result. I didn’t have the best legs to be honest but wanted to give it a try today. Max and I went into the breakaway, then I attacked to lead with Soler. It was not easy at all, and when Lopez bridge across, I knew I am not going to win because he was a lot fresher. But I gave it my all and was still able to secure second today. I think that was the maximum in the end."

- Results: Adam Yates wins stage 3 .  (Cyclingnews) - De Gendt holds tenaciously to race lead.

- Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) following his Stage 3 victory: "Last week I showed that I was in good condition, I came up short there and I really wanted to win today. On the climb Bernal and Quintana were really strong, when they attacked I held back a little bit just to pace my effort and slowly, slowly came back to them.  Then it was a bit of a game. Quintana didn’t really want to work and in the end it was a sprint with 200metres to go and I managed to finish it off.  Tomorrow we have another tough stage and another possibly for a stage win but we will see. So far so good, the team did a super job to look after me, so more of the same tomorrow hopefully."

- Rafał Majka (Bora-Hansgrohe) after the queen stage: "It was a hard stage today. The final climb had an average gradient of 7,6 %. The team worked well to bring me in a good position, but as Team Sky increased the pace, the race fell apart and it was not easy to follow them. I finished inside the top 20 but it was a really tough fight today."

- Christian Pömer, Sports Director, Bora-Hansgrohe, after Stage 3: "We went confidently into today’s stage, after our two successful first days here. Our plan was to support our climbers to achieve a good stage result. Jay worked very well for his teammates until the bottom of the final climb, as well as Gregor. At the end of the day Rafał crossed the finish line in 17thplace, which isn’t really what we hoped for, but there are still some stages left at the Volta a Catalunya, and we will try our best to achieve some more good results."

- Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) won Stage 3.  Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal) retained the overall race lead.

- News: Chris Froome loses time after Volta a Catalunya crash .  (Cyclingnews) - Team Sky rider out of contention in overall classification.

- News: Matthews: I meant to come here and train a bit, but now we have a win .  (Cyclingnews) - Matthews continues dramatic comeback from crash with Volta a Catalunya win.

- Results: Matthews wins stage 2 .  (Cyclingnews) - De Gendt holds overall lead, Froome loses time in late-race crash.

- Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb) after his victory in Stage 2: "Coming into the final kilometres I was able to move up to the front on the downhill and flat before the climb to the finish. I positioned myself near Valverde as I thought he was the favourite for the day. I timed my sprint really well, starting with 150 metres to go and managed to hold everyone off. The team rode really well from the start, we were always in control of the race and never let it get out of hand and came out with the win. I’m happy to get the win for them."

- Team Sunweb coach Aike Visbeek: "We took control of the peloton from the beginning of the race and did a lot of work to keep the break in check. Once onto the harder parts of the course the guys worked hard to keep Michael in a good position, before helping set him up for the finale. Michael showed great determination by taking the sprint, it was a really impressive effort from him. The whole team rode really well today and it is great to get another win."

- Stage 2 Results - Top 10 finishers:

- Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb) won Stage 2.  Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal) remains overall leader.

- Grega Bole (Bahrain-Merida) following Stage 1: "It was a super hard stage, but I felt very well during all the race and also on the climbs. In the end I was still feeling really good and I managed to take the sprint for the third place. For sure if I had caught the breakaway, I could have had more chances to take a better result."

- Vladimir Miholjević (Bahrain-Merida directeur sportif): "It was a fast day signed by a breakaway from the beginning.  De Gendt was part of it and he managed to drop all the other riders. Our aim was to do the sprint with Bauhaus, but he suffered due to the climbs and our second option was Grega as we already decided yesterday. He did a great sprint. We can be happy with his third place. The team worked well and we will keep fighting on the next stages."

- Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) following his second place finish on Stage 1: "When we caught the chasing group, the pace dropped, and I thought that I should give it a try. I just wanted to achieve the best possible result for our team and gain some seconds for the upcoming days. At the end of the day I finished second and lead the best young rider classification, therefore I am happy with my attack."

- Christian Pömer, Bora-Hansgrohe Sports Director: "We saw a spectacular attack of T. De Gendt, and a winner, who deserved to survive in the front. I think, many thought he wouldn’t make it. Max showed, as one of our GC contenders, a strong performance and rode aggressively in the last kilometres. We are super happy with his second place. We knew, the breakaway would play a big role today, unfortunately, we had no guy in the break at the beginning, but in the end of the day Max and Gregor showed a really good performance."

- Preview: 2019 Volta a Catalunya – Preview .  (Cyclingnews) - Valverde and Froome headline star-studded field.

- Fabio Aru (UAE Team Emirates) won't be able to race at Volta a Catalunya due to injury.  Said team doctor Jeroen Swart, "After the start of the season, Aru again encountered difficulties in getting up to that normal level that he and the team had hoped for.  Recently, Fabio developed more specific symptoms related to his left leg: he felt feelings of weakness in the limb after intense training and in race efforts.  In view of these symptoms, further medical tests have shown a constriction of the iliac artery in his left leg. This relatively rare condition is found in professional cyclists given the position adopted on their bikes and can develop progressively over a period of several years."

- Ryan Gibbons (Team Dimension Data) before the 2019 Volta a Catalunya: "I am looking forward to a good week here at Volta Catalunya. It’s been a while since my last race and I’m eager to see how the form is after a solid start to the season. It’s a very strong field here this year, but we have a good group of climbers here and I’m confident I’ll be in the mix in the “sprint” stages. The weather is also forecast to be pretty good, so fingers crossed it stays that way and we can have a successful week here in Spain."

- Ben O’Connor (Team Dimension Data): "It’s going to be a really hard week in terms of the parcours. Last year I surprised myself finishing 11th, so it’s a main aim now to try and be into the top 10. The group we have is super strong, with Ryan also our man for the few sprints. It’s one of the main goals going through into the Giro, so it would be great to come out of this with smiles, some results and boxes ticked!"

- Bahrain-Merida lineup for the 2019 Volta a Catalunya:

Damiano Caruso Hermann Pernsteiner Grega Bole Andrea Garosio Phil Bauhaus Antonio Nibali Valerio Agnoli

- Vladimir Miholjević (Bahrain-Merida sports director): "Hermann Pernsteiner and Damiano Caruso will be our overall contenders, but they will also seize the opportunity and take the risk to try to win a stage. There will be 4 stages that are supposed to end with a possible reduced bunch sprint, where Phil Bauhaus will be our man. We know that on Catalunya there are high possibilities for a breakaway to come to the finish, especially after two mountain stages, with uphill finishes at Vallter 2000 and La Molina ski resorts, that will be crucial for the general classification. We are approaching Volta Ciclistica a Catalunya with the aim to achieve the best possible result both in each stage and in the general classification. We will try to use every chance to bring home a result, using experience and tactical moves in the right moment."

- Joey Rosskopf (CCC Team) before the 2019 Volta a Catalunya: "Since moving to Girona a few years ago, competing in the Volta a Catalunya has been especially exciting for me. It’s one of the only times all year when I get to race on the same familiar roads where I regularly train. With the team we’re bringing to Catalunya, I think we will all have the chance to race aggressively and opportunistically.  I was feeling pretty good on the bike in Tirreno-Adriatico, so as long as my legs hold up and continue to recover from the past week, I look forward to taking any chance I can, to jump in a breakaway and animate the race."

- Patrick Bevin (CCC Team): "I feel like my form is good and I hope to target some of the sprinter friendlier stages. It’s never an easy feat at Catalunya, as the parcours is so hilly. It’s the first race of a three-tour series for me, so I’m really looking forward to what is a busy spring ahead."

- Simon Geschke (CCC Team) ahead of the race: "I’m really looking forward to come back to racing. It feels like a second start of the season for me, after having only one race day this year. I’m very happy that my recovery went well enough to make it back for Catalunya. I hope to be at a level which allows me to do good and valuable work for the team. I don’t expect to be in my top shape right away, but the training in the last three weeks went well and I’m definitely ready to race again. My goal is to take this race as an opportunity to get the race intensity into the legs and make the next step on my way to being at my best, at the Ardennes Classics."

- CCC Team roster for the 2019 Volta a Catalunya:

Patrick Bevin (NZL) Josef Černý (CZE) Simon Geschke (GER) Łukasz Owsian (POL) Joey Rosskopf (USA) Laurens Ten Dam (NED) Riccardo Zoidl (AUT) Sports Directors: Jackson Stewart (USA), Piotr Wadecki (POL)

- Jackson Stewart (CCC Team directeur sportif): "It is another difficult Volta a Catalunya, noticeably with the Vallter 2000 mountain top finish and then, the next day, the short and difficult stage up to La Molina Alp. We have a strong roster of opportunists and we will look how each stage develops in our pursuit of a stage win. We will go in without any pressure for the General Classification and see where we end up."

- Max Schachmann (Quick-Step Floors) had this to say following his stage 6 victory: "I am so happy, you can’t believe it! I have felt good for a long period, but today being able to take my first victory is amazing. I will always remember this day. I had good sensations from the morning, actually already since yesterday. I tried a few times yesterday, but it didn’t work out. Today it was different and worked out perfectly. I was ready from the morning, even opting for my aero bike despite that climb, because I wanted to be in the break to try and get a result."

I know Laengren, we were teammates at IAM Cycling, so we had a good understanding and worked together quite well. After having some problems after Paris-Nice and feeling a bit sick when I came here, I finally could grab a victory! I had a few rough days indeed, but that's cycling: you have good days and bad days."

- Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) following his Stage 4 victory: "It was a really tough day, more importantly because of the cold temperatures. I suffered a lot at the late part of La Creueta and its descent. The move by Mitchelton on the Joy climb was a really good one, but didn't make us become nervous for two reasons: one, it was a very tough stage, and two, it was quite harder for a solo rider to reach the finish. That's why Chaves cracked near the final climb and couldn't continue his action. The team was phenomenal, all day - they kept the race always under control and stayed calm."

We had Gregor, Davide and Jay in the reduced bunch. They were able to close the gap to the chaser but it was too late. Tomorrow will be another day and therefore another chance."

- Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) following his Stage 2 victory: "We spent the whole day at the front of the bunch because of the strong winds, which could have caused some splits as we saw in previous years. After the break was caught, a window opened for us to go chase the bonus seconds, so we went for them. However, it wasn't on the team's plans to aim for the stage win, not at all. It was just that Scott got through the final climb at a really strong pace, and with the bunch strung out and many sprinters dropping, it was easier for us to seek for a good position into the main field - that was where we chose to go for the win."

On the descent, I was somewhere in the middle of the bunch, but Michael gave me a lot of confidence by telling me to stay calm and pacing me back to the front, where Bob showed an insane power in the last kilometers. Many teams wanted to be there, but thanks to these fantastic guys we were all the time in control, they made the difference today and I thank them for that."

- EF Education First-Drapac for Volta a Catalunya:

Mike Woods Nate Brown Hugh Carthy Joe Dombrowski Alex Howes Pierre Rolland Rigoberto Uran

- Mike Woods (EF Education First-Drapac): "Catalunya has the pace of a one-week race over terrain that you’d typically find in the final week of a grand tour.  In the third week of a grand tour the courses are often extremely challenging; however, by this time the top 10 or so riders have established themselves, and there is a bit more civility in the peloton -- guys are more focused on surviving as opposed to attacking.  There is no civility in Catalunya. It’s aggressive racing from the gun to tape."

- Quick-Step Floors team for Volta a Catalunya:

Alvaro Jose Hodeg Chagui (COL) Bob Jungels (LUX) James Knox (GBR) Enric Mas (ESP) Michael Mørkøv (DEN) Jhonnatan Narvaez (ECU) Maximilian Schachmann (GER)

- Bob Jungels (Quick-Step Floors): "Tirreno-Adriatico went a bit differently than I had expected. I came there in a good shape but I got sick after a few days and just didn’t have the legs on the key stages, but finished off with a solid time trial, which was reassuring. Catalunya is a race I’ve never done before and one of the hardest on the calendar, but I’m really looking forward to it. We have a strong team and hopefully we’ll come out of the race with some nice results."

- Harald Morscher (Team Bahrain-Merida, directeur sportif): "I think we have a very strong line-up this year at Volta Ciclista A Catalunya and we have high expectations to make some good results. Giovanni Visconti will be our captain and just next to him is Matej Mohorič, who is in a good shape as we could’ve seen in Larciano and he is ready to ride strong too.  Niccoló Bonifazio is there for the sprints and we have great riders to satisfy all the TBM fans.  Enrico Gasparotto is in the preparation for his Classic goals, so for sure he is uprising his shape. Enrico already made great stage results at the past Catalunya races. Domen Novak had a nice performance on last Catalunya and will support our Leaders for GC especially at the mountain stages. Grega Bole will be our experienced man to guide his teammates during the week. Valerio Agnioli and his huge team experience is also a guarantee that we will perform with strong team that has big appetites at Catalunya."

- BMC Racing team roster for the 2018 Volta a Catalunya:

Patrick Bevin (NZL) Brent Bookwalter (USA) Nicolas Roche (IRL) Joey Rosskopf (USA) Tejay van Garderen (USA) Loïc Vliegen (BEL) Danilo Wyss (SUI) BMC Sports Directors: Valerio Piva (ITA), Jackson Stewart (USA)

- Valerio Piva (BMC D.S.): "We are going into the race with Tejay as our leader for the General Classification. He is feeling good following his crash at Paris-Nice and he is really motivated to start racing. He has won stages here on two occasions in the past and both of those finishes will feature in this year's race, so he knows it well."

- Volta a Catalunya TV broadcasters in 2018 include FuboTV , Esport3, Tdp, Eurosport, Eitb,...

Volta a Catalunya 2023: GC Favourites

Primoz Roglic - Volta a Catalunya 2023: GC Favourites

[Underneath article was written before the start of the Volta a Catalunya and has not been updated]

Adam Yates is one of those riders who often lose time in races against the clock. Just like Richard Carapaz. Yates won the Volta a Catalunya before, while Carapaz finished in second last year. The other two big names on the entry list, Roglic and Evenepoel, did hardly race in Catalonia before. The World Champion never, the Olympic ITT Champion only once – in 2016, his first year as a pro. As they are both expectional time trialists it will be interesting to see how they fare in a race with no time trial.

The battle for the overall triumph on the Volta a Catalunya is expected to come down to the stages 2, 3 and 5, while the hilly criterium race on the last day of action is always compelling, but seldom leads to significant changes on GC.

Stage 2 is likely to open up the first time gaps among GC riders. It’s a mountain station in ski resort Vallter 2000, where Yates emerged victorious on the last two occasions – in 2019 and 2021. The climb to the line is 11 kilometres and the average gradient sits at 7.6%.

While the run-up to the Vallter 2000 climb is not very remarkable, the 3rd stage serves a more compelling first part. The elevation gain during the day sums up to almost 4,000 metres. Yet, the La Molina finish climb is relatively easy – 12.1 kilometres long and averaging 4.3%. Not an ascent for pure mountain goats, but if the form is not good enough, you suffer.

Mountain goats will have it their way in the fifth day of action. Again, the run-up is not very remarkable, but this time the climb to the line is. Mont Caro is a mythical peak within the Lo Port natural reserve. As far as cycling goes, the ascent comes with brutal credentials – 8.4 kilometres at 9%.

The most recent winners of the Volta a Catalunya are Sergio Higuita (2022), Adam Yates (2021) and Miguel Ángel López (2019). The succeeded he now retired trio Alejandro Valverde (2018, 2017, 2009), Nairo Quintana (2016), and Richie Porte (2015).
