Celebration Travel
We’ve locked down, canceled trips, and spent countless milestones—birthdays, graduations, honeymoons—cooped up at home. But with an end in sight, it’s time for a do-over. Time to dream again. To book that cruise, map out an epic road trip, or plan a family reunion. To remind ourselves why we travel in the first place—to celebrate ourselves, one another, and the world.

Celebration Travel: A Guide To Vacation Ideas
Celebrate your special moments on a cruise.
By Cynthia J. Drake | Published on September 22, 2023
Though you never need an excuse to plan a cruise, having something to celebrate with a big trip just makes the experience that much more special. It's a popular trend, and for good reason. Chances are, you'll feel that celebratory spirit as soon as you set foot on your ship.
Why Cruising Is A Great Option For Celebrating Your Special Occasion
A traditional celebration, whether it's a birthday, anniversary or another occasion, usually lasts just a few hours. Selecting a cruise as your celebration venue of choice means the party continues for the full length of your vacation. That means more time to celebrate, more time to reconnect, and more time to spend quality time with the people you love.
I have celebrated so many important moments of my life on a Royal Caribbean cruise , including my wedding, honeymoon, milestone birthdays and family reunions. Each experience was incredibly special for so many reasons.
The first thing I love about these kinds of celebrations is that rather than spending all of my time planning every last detail (I'm a bit Type A by nature and have a tendency to go overboard with my planning!), everything is already planned out for you on a cruise. All of your meals and activities are already waiting for you — all you have to do is show up and enjoy the party yourself.
During major celebrations, it can be difficult to make everyone feel like a valued guest. As the guest of honor or host, your focus may be pulled in so many different directions, sitting down and enjoying some one-on-one time with each guest usually isn't in the cards. Not the case on a cruise. Whether your celebration voyage is three or four nights or longer, you can be sure to make time to really enjoy the company of your guests without worrying about anything else.
How To Plan And Book Your Celebration Cruise
First things first: If you are hosting the celebration, be sure to collect everyone's contact information and connect to a Royal Caribbean Certified Vacation Planner or a trusted travel agent ahead of your trip. Booking everyone's accommodations together may unlock some great benefits, too, such as group discounts or other bonuses. You can work through an agent to ensure your rooms are located in the same area of the ship if that's your preference, or book it yourself at your own leisure.
When planning a cruise , think through your preferred itinerary carefully — which ports make the most sense for your cruise celebration? Keep in mind that the world is your oyster. Special occasions may even call for thinking outside of the Caribbean. Think of the epic experiences you can share on a cruise to the Greek Isles, Fiji, Alaska, the Panama Canal, or other far-flung destinations. You'll never forget your special anniversary when you spend it trekking on the massive glaciers of Alaska .
One of my main tips for celebration travel is to make sure you mention the occasion you're celebrating at the time of booking. Royal Caribbean loves hosting celebrations — and you may just find a special surprise when you board your ship. Birthdays, anniversaries, and honeymoons are frequently celebrated during an onboard dinner of your choice, usually with a special dessert and a tableside serenade by a team of waiters. Or, a bottle of champagne and a box of chocolates may be waiting for you in your stateroom. When you want to celebrate, these little gestures set cruising apart.
Planning to get married onboard a cruise? Royal Caribbean offers various wedding packages to help you say "I do" on your cruise, including providing a private venue for your ceremony or vow renewal, plus extras including champagne, breakfast in bed, and dinner at a specialty restaurant. You can even invite non-sailing guests to join you in the wedding festivities.
And that's only the beginning.
How To Make Your Celebration Travel Truly Epic
So you want to book a trip for a special occasion but don't know where to start. Whether you need some unique anniversary vacation ideas, tips for birthday weekend getaways, or graduation vacation ideas, here's how to make your celebration cruise really stand out.
When celebrating something special, splurge a little to make the moment one you'll never forget. Royal Caribbean does celebration travel right, and even offers a full menu of options for decorating the stateroom of the honored guest or guests to the nines. Party packages include magnetic door signs, mirror clings, hanging decorations and photo frames. Keep in mind that you don't have to order these decorations through the cruise line (you may want to tuck your own streamers and door decorations in your suitcase), but the advantage of ordering in advance is that the room will be decorated and waiting for the grand surprise when you and your family arrive. Want to go even further? Add on a special delivery of champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries — who wouldn't love that? Or, maybe your loved one would enjoy a special spa treatment, dinner at a specialty restaurant or an epic shore excursion (helicopter glacier tour, anyone?) — all easy yet incredibly thoughtful gifts! Other gifts can also be purchased in advance and delivered to a stateroom, making for some excellent birthday vacation ideas.
Celebrating with a big group on a cruise gives you access to things you may not think to include in an at-home party. The best part? These things are often included in your cruise fare. For example, hiring an event photographer may not be a part of your budget for your average birthday or anniversary celebration, and the services of onboard photographers are included as just a regular part of your cruise vacation. So, when you're celebrating something special, be sure to take advantage of this wonderful service. Gather your group together (be sure to give a heads-up in advance if you want to coordinate outfits or bring along any special props), and strike a pose. A souvenir photo from your trip makes a great take-home for the whole party.
For larger groups (or for really special occasions), you might want to reach out to Royal Caribbean in advance of your trip to inquire about renting out special event space or meeting rooms. There are plenty of packages to choose from that include options for food and beverage, with space for up to 400 people.
Cruising really takes the stress out of celebration planning, especially since you don't need to worry about coordinating everyone's accommodations, dining, and activities between the party plans. Likewise, smaller travel groups won't have a problem finding space on the ship to relax and unwind together, whether that's at a piano bar, karaoke night, afternoon trivia, or dancing at the club after hours. Get with your group in advance and plan your meet-up times. You don't want to miss your chance to become the reigning champions of '80s music trivia!
For your next anniversary, birthday, bachelor/bachelorette party, graduation, or any other event worthy of a big celebration, consider cruising as the ultimate party.

Great Places to Celebrate Milestone Birthdays (and Special Occasions)
Discover top destinations to mark major life milestones.
Getty Images
Whether you want an adventurous or serene celebratory escape, there are plenty of standout spots for special occasions.
There are birthdays and then there are birthdays . Certain milestones – 21, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 – are significant events. Such moments call for a memorable celebratory trip. And when you want to go big on your birthday, there's nothing like being somewhere that sets the tone for the occasion, and better yet, helps launch you into the next phase of life. So, without further ado, here are standout spots to mark major life milestones.
When You Turn 21…
Visit an Outside-the-Box Party Destination
Forget about traditional party spots like Miami, Las Vegas and New York City. Eight miles east of Puerto Rico, Vieques features the largest natural wildlife refuge in the Caribbean and a vibrant nightlife. And at the W Retreat & Spa, Vieques Island, you can take a three-day DJ retreat that teaches the art of spinning tunes, perfect to play by day and mix and mingle by night. For an out of the ordinary experience, head to the property's two-level infinity WET splash pool, where tunes pulsate through the underwater sound system streaming a custom mix directly through the water. Best of all, when you're not sipping tropical cocktails around a fire pit, there's adventurous pursuits – hiking, horseback riding and nighttime tours of the Bioluminescent Mosquito Bay – to keep you busy.
Jump into Your Twenties
If you're looking for a thrilling vacation experience, it's hard to beat jumping into the Devil's Pool, a natural infinity pool at Victoria Falls, along the Zimbabwe-Zambia border in southern Africa. With guides from Tongabezi, a high-end safari lodge situated near the falls, you can catch magnificent lunar rainbow views and swim at the edge of the waterfall without worrying about your safety.
For an adventure that's exhilarating, but not as far-flung as Zambia, consider visiting Negril, Jamaica . After getting your adrenaline pumping while cliff jumping, you can unwind at Rick's Cafe, a lively bar known for its picturesque cliffside location and its majestic sun sets. Aside from serving some of the best cocktails in Negril, Rick's nearby cliffs offer memorable diving spots for those seeking a spine-tingling adventure.
When You Turn 30…
Trek into Your Thirties
Take a life-changing four-day hike along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu . With a luxury tour operator, you can enjoy hot showers, massages and meals prepared by a private cook. And once you've reached the end of the trail, you'll arrive at Sun Gate, which offers a magnificent view of the ruins. From there, you can check out temples and agricultural areas or impressive vantage points like Huayna Picchu, which offers a bird's-eye view of the ruins.
Reach New Heights
Though it's hard to beat visiting Machu Picchu's iconic sites, memorable experiences at Capella Marigot Bay Resort and Marina in Saint Lucia await daring travelers looking to steer away from a cookie-cutter vacation. Climb one of St. Lucia's iconic landmarks like Gros Piton, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or relax with treatment at Auriga Spa at Capella Marigot Bay, which incorporates natural ingredients from the island.
When You Turn 40…
Recharge with a Spiritual Awakening
At forty, you'll likely want to connect with your body and soul. To embark on a spiritual adventure, head to Rythmia Life Advancement Center in Costa Rica. Think of it as Club Med to get rejuvenated in a splendid beachfront setting. During your stay, you can feast on organic, locally grown food, indulge in unlimited massages and volcanic mud baths and meditate, among other activities.
You can also boost your health and wellness with a relaxing getaway to Turks & Caicos , which is sure to put you at ease with its aquamarine waves, sugary sands and impressive coral reefs. The Residences at Grace Bay Club offer five-bedroom villas so you and your loved ones can celebrate at the spa, the beach or top culinary spots, especially local crowd-pleasers like Mr. Grouper's Restaurant and Da Conch Shack.
Dive into Your Forties
For a trip to remember, consider heading to Fiji, where you can learn to dive among spectacular coral reefs. The Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort is surrounded by palms, mountains and the calming Savusavu Bay and is often lauded for its standout dive sites. Beyond getting certified to dive in just three days, you can enjoy the world-class dining, secluded sands and the magnificent reefs of the Namena Marine Reserve.
When You Turn 50…
Go Somewhere Exotic
To celebrate this important milestone, consider exploring the island nation of Sri Lanka. Make sure you take the train through the tea plantations from Ella to Kandy and you embrace the region's lush forests and diverse species as you check out Buddhist temples, colonial architecture and Sri Lanka's flavorful gastronomy. And if you're looking to splurge, spend your first night in the Mount Lavinia Hotel Colombo, which once served as the residence for the British government, and still retains its colonial grandeur.
When You Turn 60…
Visit Italy
If you want to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime cooking vacation, it's hard to beat Tuscany . Stay in luxurious villas and spend a week learning the art of cooking authentic Italian and Mediterranean dishes. After mastering classic cooking techniques, visit an olive mill or enjoy wine-and-cheese tastings . Plus, Tuscany affords ample time to relax, hike or sightsee in the countryside, making it an ideal escape for both laid-back and adventurous types.
When You Turn 70…
Visit Places on Your Bucket List
Let's say you've been meaning to get to Zanzibar in Tanzania. Now is the time to go. Stay at the Protea Hotel Mbweni Ruins, a historic hotel with a beautiful botanical garden right by the Indian Ocean and far enough out of Stone Town (the old part of Zanzibar City) to enjoy some peace and quiet. There are daily shuttles into Stone Town and you'll have access to all kinds of tours.
When You Turn 80…
Focus on Family
Your eighties is a time to enjoy quality bonding time with your family. Myrtle Beach , in South Carolina, is ideal for family fun and offers affordable lodging options. There's enough action for kids, tweens, millennials and beyond. It's a culinary gem with seafood and anything else you might fancy. There's the beach, boardwalk and Brookgreen Gardens, not to mention live entertainment at The Carolina Opry, including the Time Warp show, which showcases hits of the 60s, 70s and 80s.
When You Turn 90…
Plan a Tranquil Getaway
If you want the peaceful atmosphere of Antigua or Bermuda but don't want to trek the miles, consider Alys Beach on the Florida Panhandle. There are many vacation rentals and much to do from swimming at Caliza, the community pool, biking, taking in the 20-acre preserve and more. And if you're based on the West Coast, consider planning a trip to Palm Springs, a desert hideaway set at the foot of the rugged Santa Rosa Mountains, filled with colorful flowers, fragrant tangerine and grapefruit trees and picturesque courtyards, all framed by towering palms.
When You Turn 100…
Celebrate Cherished Travel Experiences
Pavia Rosati, founder and CEO of travel website Fathom, suggests celebrating the occasion by reconstructing a favorite travel experience. She advises recreatng memories, such as "a Mexican feast (with a piñata) to recall the high times in Acapulco, an Italian spaghetti feast to honor your Amalfi Coast honeymoon or a Brazilian feijoada so you can see if you remember those Carnival samba moves all these decades later."

Travel during the southern summer (November to February) for the best wildlife viewing opportunities and manageable weather conditions. Insider tip: Book your expedition at least a year in advance, as spots fill up quickly for these once-in-a-lifetime journeys.
- Rajasthan
Visit comfortably during the cooler months, spanning from October to March. Dive into the rich tapestry of its desert states, where the arid beauty is best explored in milder temperatures. For a deeper immersion, consider enlisting the expertise of a local guide. They can unveil hidden gems within bustling cities, from secret shopping spots brimming with local crafts to off-the-beaten-path historical sites steeped in captivating stories.
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) offer the best weather, avoiding the summer crowds. Insider tip: Rent a vintage car to explore the Tuscan countryside at your own pace, stopping at small vineyards and hilltop towns that are not on the typical tourist trail.
Culinary Delights
Luxury travel is as much about the gastronomic experiences as the destinations themselves. Each region offers something unique – be it the fresh, seafood-centric dishes of Antarctica (served aboard your cruise), the rich and aromatic cuisine of Mexico, or Tuscany's farm-to-table fare and world-renowned wines.
Must-See Sights and Experiences
Kayaking with Whales in Antarctica: Paddle amidst icebergs and curious marine wildlife for an adrenaline-filled yet serene encounter.

Expert’s guide to special occasion holidays
- Special occasions
A night under the stars on a beach or a sunrise hot-air balloon ride; our experts know the most memorable experiences to mark your milestone event. Whatever you have in mind for your special occasion holiday , tell us where you'd like to go, and we'll match you up with someone who knows the destination inside out.
Here we've picked a handful of our experts' favourite hotels and experiences that are perfect for celebrating your birthday, anniversary, engagement, or honeymoon.
Blow-out Birthday holidays
Although some of us may love celebrating a momentous birthday at home with family and friends, many would prefer to blow out our candles on an exotic holiday. If your idea of a happy birthday is sipping cocktails on a sun-kissed beach, being pampered in the spa and indulging in delicious cuisine, take a look at Bodyholiday, St Lucia . Here, you can do as much or as little as you like. There are a range of activities from fitness classes to watersports, as well as an out-of-this-world spa. The icing on the cake is definitely the included daily spa treatment.
For a birthday bash on the 'wilder' side, choose a safari holiday. You could take the whole family away on a wildlife-spotting adventure to Kenya, one of the best places in the world to spot the Big Five. Governors' Camp in the Maasai Mara has a private camp that can be reserved exclusively for your group. Spend quality time together out on epic game drives and catch up over sundowners in the cosy bar. If it’s just the two of you, the more intimate Little Governors’ Camp , which is just across the Mara River, is perfect for couples. Raise a glass while relaxing on the deck of your beautifully-furnished tent and keep a lookout for the resident wildlife – you can often spot elephants striding through the camp.
“For my 50th birthday I was lucky enough to spend a few nights at Governors’ Camp in the Maasai Mara, and the experience was incredible. The guide's knowledge was outstanding and I relished learning about the life cycles of the wildlife and the dynasties in the Mara. A highlight of my stay was an exquisite meal on the banks of the hippo-filled Mara River. The Maasai guides surprised us with singing and dancing around the campfire. The next morning, we rose early for a dawn flight in a hot-air balloon, which was a tremendous experience I'll never forget."

We’ve been planning extraordinary romantic escapes ever since we first opened our doors over fifty years ago. And we’ve won plenty of awards for our expertise. Our Personal Travel Experts have personally visited the hotels we recommend and are ready to share their ideas and tailor make a honeymoon as unique as you are.
Mauritius is a destination that we love to recommend for our newlyweds. There are velvety white beaches, rugged mountains and jade-coloured lagoons, as well as a bedazzling choice of beach hotels. The five-star LUX* Le Morne has one of the most desirable spots on the island – it’s nestled in the shadow of Le Morne Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sink into a sun lounger on the beach and enjoy the VIP treatment as waiters bring you freshly cut coconuts or a refreshing face mist (they’ll even clean your sunglasses). And as honeymooners you’ll be invited to a fun cocktail making class and receive complimentary canapés and bubbly on your private terrace.
If you’re looking for a honeymoon that combines adventure and relaxation, a multi-centre getaway in Thailand may be right for you. For the perfect twin-centre stay, spend a few nights exploring vibrant Bangkok while staying at our favourite new city bolthole, Sindhorn Midtown Bangkok , followed by blissful beach days at the chic Rocky's Boutique Resort on Koh Samui. For an extra layer of excitement, tag on a few nights stay at Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort , where you can get up close with elephants, as well as spending the night in your very own ‘jungle bubble’.
“My husband and I travelled with Kuoni on our honeymoon to Thailand. We had the most amazing trip visiting a trio of places: Bangkok, an elephant camp in Chiang Mai, and the tropical island of Koh Samui. The highlight of the trip was during our time at the elephant sanctuary. We loved learning about the gentle giants and interacting with them in their natural habitat. On our last evening, we had the most amazing dining experience over the river, sampling some of the best food we’ve ever tasted while watching a herd of elephants settle down in their camp for the night.”

Whether you’re celebrating a 5th or 50th wedding anniversary, booking in time together on a no-kids-allowed holiday is guaranteed to reignite the romance. If you don’t want to travel too far, we have a collection of hideaway hotels in Europe that are perfect for a couples-only getaway. In Mallorca, the adults-only Secrets Mallorca Villamil Resort & Spa is designed in the style of a fairytale castle and is wonderfully romantic. Opt for a swim-up room for special extras such as personalised check-in, afternoon hors d’oeuvres and access to the private sundeck.
Fancy a more far-flung adventure to mark your wedding date? The tropical tear-drop shaped island of Sri Lanka is an alluring destination to explore. There are mist-covered mountains, picturesque tea plantations, wildlife-rich parks and some pretty breathtaking beaches. You can create your own unique itinerary, travel with your own private driver/guide and stay in boutique hotels away from the crowds. At Heritance Tea Factory , all of the rooms and suites have spectacular views over the surrounding tea plantations; you can also enjoy incredible dining experiences – we love the tea-themed menu in the restaurant.
“I planned a lovely itinerary in Sri Lanka for a couple celebrating their ruby wedding celebrations. They were due to arrive at the Heritance Tea Factory in Nuwara Eliya on the day of their anniversary. As a surprise, we arranged a special ‘Dining on Wheels’ experience in the unusual railway carriage restaurant, where they enjoyed a Michelin-worthy menu alongside fine wines. They were delighted!”
Sharna mckay, assistant store manager, kuoni metrocentre.

The best holiday destination for those special occasions.
Traveling somewhere new offers cultural enrichment creates life-long memories and gives you a chance to escape from mundane day-to-day life. And what better reason to go away than as a way to celebrate a special event? A unique occasion warrants a unique experience, which is exactly what you’ll get from these destinations, perfect for marking some of life’s most momentous milestones.
The stag or hen do: Prague
With Prague voted the world’s second-best stag destination behind London, the Czech capital is just as much fun but at a fraction of the cost. Bars and clubs galore? Check. An abundance of fun activities? Check. More cultural sights and experiences than you can shake a stick at? Check. And perhaps best of all, it is one of Europe’s cheapest cities to buy a pint , with the average beer setting you back just £1.55.
By day, Prague is a beautiful city, bursting with history, with notable highlights including the iconic Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, and the Church of Our Lady before Týn. By night, it’s a party hotspot, with many of its pubs and clubs open until dawn—stag and hen do organizers Maximise rate Karlovy Lazne, Aloha Bar, and Rocky O’Reilly’s among the best boozers to drink in. Combine this with activities like tank driving, spas, and whitewater rafting, you can’t beat Prague as a stag or hen do destination.
The anniversary: Venice
For a sentimental trip with a loved one, look no further than Venice. Although Paris is considered the city of love, Venice is just as romantic and far less clichéd. Its beautiful bridges, picturesque landmarks, and intimate alleyways are perfect for lovers to explore together. In fact, the city was voted the world’s most romantic proposal spot , so could be a good place to pop the question if you’re at that stage of the relationship.
Venice is one of the most unique places you can visit, is made up of 100 small islands linked by waterways in place of roads. Few things are as romantic as a gondola ride with your partner, allowing you to float leisurely along the city’s labyrinth of canals, and take in sights including Saint Mark’s Basilica, Rialto Bridge, and Doge’s Palace. Indeed, the city is teeming with history, with Venice’s strict historic preservation laws keeping much of its breathtaking Venetian Gothic architecture standing today. The city is also renowned for its delectable food and array of revered art galleries and museums.
The graduation: Ibiza
After years of slogging away at university, it’s almost time for you to leave your uni pals behind and enter the real world. But before all the job searching and hard work begins, your graduation is on the horizon, which necessitates an epic trip to mark the end of an era. And there’s only one place you should be considering, and that’s the world’s clubbing mecca: Ibiza.
Since the nineties, the Spanish island has earned a reputation as one of the best party destinations around. In fact, according to the International Nightlife Association, it’s home to four of the globe’s top 10 nightclubs , with Hï Ibiza claiming the top spot. Add in Ibiza’s huge range of festivals, crazy boat parties, and its ability to attract the world’s biggest and biggest and best DJs, a trip here is the perfect way to celebrate your graduation. When you’re not painting the island red, there’s plenty of other things to do , from chilling out on some its idyllic white beaches and going scuba diving, to exploring the historical Ibiza Old Town and dining out in some of the island’s top-class restaurants.
The birthday: Las Vegas
If you’re looking to go all-out for a milestone birthday like your 21st or 30th, look no further than Las Vegas. The original “Sin City”, nowhere else offers glitz and glamour quite like Las Vegas , giving you everything you could possibly need for a rip-roaring trip away. Seen by many as the world’s ultimate adult playground, you can let yourself loose on some of the best casinos and nightclubs around, with the six kilometers of the Las Vegas strip marking the quintessential hedonic hotspot.
But there’s more to the Nevada resort city than just gambling, girls, and guzzling booze. Considered the world’s entertainment capital, visiting also gives you the opportunity to see some incredible live spectacles, from iconic theatre shows and musicals to performances from world-famous musicians. Moreover, the city is close to some of the US’s most iconic sights, such as the rafting in the Grand Canyon , Zion National Park and the Hoover Dam, which make for incredible day trips.
PLANNING A SPECIAL OCCASION TRIP
When my sister Gail turned 50, I decided a surprise getaway would be the perfect gift for my Mom, sister Ilyse and me to give her. And thus a tradition was born. Now we go away for each milestone birthday. I was always the member of the family who came up with the idea of making an album (before everyone was into “scrapbooking”), planning a surprise or putting on a show. After becoming a travel agent, my creativity had new horizons to explore.
Over the years our birthday trips have become more elaborate because we are a family of creative souls- each lending their own particular talent. But special occasion travel can be enjoyed by everyone.
Here are some key points for planning a special occasion trip or the perfect milestone birthday—
WHO IS TRAVELING?
Our milestone birthdays consist of just 4 people- me and my two sisters and our mom. We have similar interests so it’s easy to plan. If you have a larger family or group of friends, you will have to take into consideration the needs of the group. If multi-generational, children’s facilities and activities come into play. Many tour operators offer trips for multi-generational families. Also, if different ages and levels of activity are required, consider an all-inclusive or a cruise where there will be something for everyone.
WHEN ARE YOU TRAVELLING?
If you’re planning a special occasion trip in the winter, you won’t be doing a cruise in the Mediterranean or Alaska. If going during the summer, you might need to be aware of anyone sensitive to heat. Depending on what you’d like to do, consider the best time of year to do it. Also, always consider “shoulder” season as a means of saving money and not going at the most popular time of year. Be aware that major holidays and often summer vacations may cost more because more people are traveling. We took my sister to Scottsdale Arizona during the summer because that is where she was born. It was hot, but we able to rent a beautiful casita at a luxury resort for a song because it was low season.
WHERE WILL YOU GO?
In addition to weather, you must consider interests and ability of passengers and of course, budget. Our trips have run the gamut from local day trips to a river cruise through France. As Mom has aged we like to keep air travel to a minimum. For her 90th, we drove to the mountains and enjoyed a hayride, a trip to a Magic Museum and a campfire. Her fondest memories from childhood were of her one summer at overnight camp so we recreated it for her. It was every bit as special as our trip to France.
WHAT ARE THE GROUP’S INTERESTS?
Though the birthday person or anniversary couple are the most important to consider, other participants must be taken into account. While planning our trips shopping, fine food (with an emphasis on dessert), art and theater are always at the top of the list. In Paris, I arranged a chocolate tour and a concert in Sainte Chappelle. But the personality of each group varies. Are they into sports? Or maybe music? The more information you have the more memorable the trip will be.
SPECIAL ACTIVITIES.
When planning a special occasion trip always try to plan at least one memorable component that distinguishes this trip from any other. We’ve done hot air ballooning, a helicopter ride over Niagara Falls and a ballet performance at Lincoln Center. It can be a “bucket list” item or simply a poem or song performed by a grandchild. For one of my Mom’s birthdays I created a book of family traditional and stories related to food with recipes at the back.
TAP INTO THE TALENTS OF THE PARTICIPANTS.
My sisters are clever with words. They are tasked with writing poems. Some are sent to pique curiosity and get the birthday girl excited about her upcoming trip. Others are delivered during the vacation highlighting the day’s activities. I put together scrapbooks after the trip as a memento. Do you have someone who is good at photography? Or who sings? Put their talents to work. If you’re not creative, enlist the services of someone who is. I have found great ideas on Facebook and Pinterest. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel.
Take lots of pictures and if possible, make a scrapbook after you return. Half the fun is reliving your wonderful adventures. If you don’t have the talent or time, there are many companies who will do it for you. For Mom’s last birthday we videotaped her talking about her reminiscences of her childhood, growing up, meeting our Dad, and our early years. This will become a family treasure not just for us, but for future generations.
USE A TRAVEL PROFESSIONAL.
When planning a special occasion trip your travel agent can find the perfect trip and arrange all the components for a seamless and stress-free vacation. With everything planned in advance, everyone can relax and enjoy the trip. Remember- the more information you give to your travel agent regarding the participants, their interests and your budget, the more successful your trip will be.

Top Tips For Travelling For A Special Occasion
by Kathy | Apr 25, 2019 | Destinations | 0 comments
If you are planning to travel for a special occasion you may be looking forward to seeing your family or friends. Travelling somewhere for a special occasion is usually pretty exciting and it can seem quite like a holiday, but where are you all going to stay? Are you planning to stay in a hotel and hope everyone gets a room in the same place? Will you arrive at the same time? There are so many things to plan but this article can make your time away a lot easier. Read the tips below:
Work out how you’re going to get there
Let’s imagine you’re travelling across the country so you can attend your cousin’s wedding. Have you worked out how you’re going to get there? If there are more than a few of you travelling you may want to consider hiring a minibus so you can all travel together. Hiring a minibus can be cheaper than it is for everyone to travel by train or separate cars to the chosen destination.
Work out where you’re going to stay
Rather than all of you booking a room in a hotel, you may want to think about staying in the same place. There are large houses to rent in the uk that are ideal for events such as weddings and big birthdays. These houses are ideal for large groups of people to stay in and ensure that everyone stays in the same place. Staying in the same place also means that you get to enjoy all of your time together. You can have breakfast together, walk around the grounds and generally catch up with everyone.
Work out what everyone needs to do
When you are planning to go away to celebrate a birthday or enjoy a family gathering you will need to work out what everyone needs to do. Who is going to help set up the party? Who is going to go to town for supplies? You need to have a clear idea of what everyone needs to do so the whole event goes according to plan.
Enjoy not staying at home
Whether you’re travelling for a wedding, birthday, or for any other reason you can enjoy not staying at home. partyhouses.co.uk has a lot of properties that are ideal if you want to get away. You don’t have to travel far to stay somewhere special but you don’t have to stay at home. You can enjoy that special celebration in a large house a few miles away or 300 miles away. Getting away from home even for just a few nights can make it feel like you’ve had a bit of a holiday.
With a bit of planning your special occasion can go according to plan. Work out how you’re going to get to your destination and where you’re going to stay. You may also need to organise what everyone needs to do and when they’re going to do it. Travel for a special occasion and stay somewhere wonderful so it feels even more special.

“Great place for a special occasion in Moscow” Review of Cafe Pushkin
We had a lovely 'last supper' upstairs in the library at Cafe Pushkin recently. Very nice and attentive waiting staff and the food was very nice indeed and nicely paced too. I can thoroughly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion when in Moscow.

This restaurant (and bar downstairs) has lots of charm, along with exceptional food and service. We began our celebration meal with Champagne and Vodka, appetizers of Salmon Caviar on Buckwheat Pancakes and Roasted Bone Marrow with puff pastry and toasts (see photo for decadent presentation). We had one Fish Broth Soup served with miniature fish pastries, and one Borsht with apples and sour cream - the best borsht we had throughout Russia. Our main course (for two) was Chicken breast stuffed with foie gras, served with vegetables and a rustic chicken cassolet. For dessert we enjoyed a Napoleon and a 'Chocolate Sphere' containing Passion Fruit and Vanilla Ice Cream - exposed when the waiter poured a hot chocolate sauce at the table, which melted the 'sphere'. We lingered for hours, enjoying the food and surroundings. Note 1: They currently sell cigars and cigarettes on the menu, and have no non-smoking section, which almost ruined my experience; we are told that in 2014 the law is changing, and this should not be an issue. Note 2: The 1st floor has a different menu, the second floor is decorated as a library, and the smaller 3rd floor has an elegant ceiling and French style.
Send yourself back to the moscovite belle epoque, ambiance is just right, well decorated and with a lot of pharmacy toys (the place used to be a drugstore back in 1900s). Great food, unforgetable cocktails (highlight to Russian Mule and TransSiberyan Express). It worth it every ruble!
I did have some reservations initially after reading some of the less positive reviews on here but I could not fault the whole experience. The setting, food and service all combined and made for a fantastic evening. It is a little pricey but it is a decent restaurant in an expensive city. We had three small pies as an appetizer, I had borscht to start which was delicious. Best I've had honestly I don't think i want to have it again as I know it will never be as good, the smoked goose through it was delicious. My husband had dumplings to start, tasty but not my borscht and for main we went all out and had the Chateau Briand. Yes, it's expensive but it was worth it. Melt in the mouth and a decent size could have easily fed a third. It is served over hot charcoals so is continues to cook in front of you if you find it served to rare. It is served with a warm loaf of bread for you to dip in the juices of the steak. Such a nice touch and absolutely delicious. As well as the usual potatoes, a kind of chipped roast potatoes and salad. We finished it all of with a dozen sorbets, which actually includes ice cream too. It's only one scoop of each so between two it's a good amount particularly after 3 courses. I can not fault the service, the food was served quickly so just say to your waiter if you want/need a rest between courses otherwise it I'll just keep coming. Our waiter was really helpful with the menu and helping us to choose. It did feel as though we were surrounded by other tourists so yes. Little touristy perhaps but that may be because that was the guy with the best language skills so therefore his section of the restaurant. The decor and whole ambience of the place was pretty special.
even if you are staying in moscow just for one day don't miss the opportunity to visit theis place ! it will take you back in time and you will no longer be modern , the Waiters Uniforms are Outstanding dating to the early twenties , the service is imperial and the food is an Experience like no other ! Top of the line russian cuisine , if you stay long enough you will almost see Pushkin sitting at one of the tables reciting one of his works ! Pricy but worth every penny becaus eyou are paying for a surreal experience .

That's it for today.
We're wrapping up the Politics Hub, but make sure to join us again tomorrow.
And remember, at 7pm tomorrow there's a special episode of the Politics Hub with Sophy Ridge.
It will come live from one of our Target Towns, Grimsby, and will feature brand new polling and a live audience.
Before you go, here are some of today's main stories.
By Alexandra Rogers , political reporter
Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has said he wants the new NATO target for defence spending to increase from the current 2% of gross domestic product to 2.5%.
Mr Shapps said it would make a "real difference" if the countries signed up to the military alliance met his proposed target.
He told Kay Burley on Sky News: "We're now saying we think that should be 2.5%. We think in a more dangerous world that would make sense.
"I will be arguing that, and I know that the prime minister feels strongly about it, when we go to the NATO 75th anniversary summit which is in Washington DC."
The defence secretary's intervention comes after Rishi Sunak pledged to increase UK defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2030 to tackle the "growing threats" posed by hostile states including Russia, Iran and China.
Speaking alongside NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at a press conference in Warsaw yesterday, the prime minister said he planned to steadily increase defence spending by the end of the decade, rising to 2.4% a year until 2027-28 - then hitting 2.5% by 2030-31.
Funding will rise from £64.6bn in 2024 to £78.2bn in 2028, and then jump to £87bn in 2030-31.

"There isn't a single safe prosecution brought by the Post Office in the last couple of decades," Conservative MP and former minister David Davis has told Sky News.
He was responding to comments made by a lawyer representing former sub-postmasters, who told Sky News the Post Office scandal extends "greatly beyond" faulty Horizon software (see previous post).
Paul Marshall said problems with other systems which have been "overlooked" mean there are "no convictions" secured by the Post Office against any sub-postmaster "that could or should properly be treated as safe".
Sir Davis says although the government has done a "great deal already" to exonerate Horizon victims, "we probably have to do more".
He cites a report which he says found there are other cases that "at least deserved a very close look and probable exoneration, and that didn't happen".
He estimates the courts could go through " nearly all the cases in three or six months if we set ourselves the task of doing it".
He describes the Post Office as "a public body which wasn't serving the public".
By Adele Robinson , business correspondent
The Post Office scandal extends "greatly beyond" faulty Horizon software, according to a lawyer for victims.
Paul Marshall, representing former sub-postmasters, says problems with third party systems in branches, such as ATMs, have been "overlooked".
A 2013 report commissioned by the Post Office, and not made public at the time, states: "Removing the ATM reduces the risk of (the sub-postmaster) being suspended... as does the presence of lottery tickets, (banking) services, and DVLA processing."
It indicates there were issues known to the Post Office with third party systems within branches - separate to Horizon software.
Barrister Paul Marshall believes, as a result, there are "no convictions" secured by the Post Office against any sub-postmaster "that could or should properly be treated as safe".
He says evidence of third party errors, such as ATMs, shows "the scandal extends considerably beyond, greatly beyond, it might be said, the limited focus of bugs in Horizon".
Blanket exoneration legislation being introduced this summer will only quash convictions brought about "by erroneous Horizon evidence".
Mr Marshall asserts that postmasters who have had appeals against convictions rejected by the Court of Appeal may have lost because their offences didn't fall within the "narrow scope" of Horizon issues.

There might not be a general election just yet, but there are important votes that will define how the areas around us are run for the next four years.
See what's happening where you are here:
With a general election looming, what counts as gains and losses for the main parties in next week's locals?
Sky's election analyst Michael Thrasher tells us what to look out for:
The Sky News live poll tracker - collated and updated by our Data and Forensics team - aggregates various surveys to indicate how voters feel about the different political parties.
With the local election campaign well under way, Labour is still sitting comfortably on a roughly 21-point lead, averaging at 43.5% in the polls, with the Tories on 23.5%.
In third is Reform UK on 12.2%, followed by the Lib Dems on 9.3%.
The Green Party stands at 6.3%, and the SNP on 3.0%.
See the latest update below - and you can read more about the methodology behind the tracker here .
By Beth Rigby , political editor
This was a trip with two aims: to refocus the world's attention on Ukraine and announce a big boost in defence spending - with an eye, of course, on national security, but also on the general election.
When it comes to Ukraine, this was a co-ordinated effort across the Atlantic.
As Rishi Sunak arrived in Berlin, overnight in Washington the US was finally approving a $600m military aid package for Kyiv.
This was all designed to send a message to Russia - allies are in lockstep and will stand behind Ukraine for as long as it takes.
The prime minister used the Poland leg of the trip to commit the UK to spending 2.5% of GDP on defence by 2030, while in Berlin, Mr Sunak announced a formal bilateral security partnership with Germany to deepen co-operation on defence and military manufacturing.
It was all part of his agenda to position himself as a wartime leader, speaking of the UK's defence industry going onto a war footing as Europe stood at a turning point.
"The world we are living in is increasingly dangerous and the axis of authoritarian states are working together to undermine our security," he told his audience in Berlin.
"We need to do more. Germany has done more and we have met the NATO standard [on spending], and you see global defence spending is rising."
Mr Sunak added: "I do believe we will look back at this moment in time and recognise this inflection point, where the old paradigm is no longer the case and we need to adjust for a new paradigm."
Read Beth's full analysis here:
That's all for tonight.
But make sure to join us again tomorrow - Sophy is heading to Grimsby to discuss why so many people have turned off politics.
There'll be a live audience and new polling laying out the situation in one of our Target Towns, so make sure to tune in at 7pm on Thursday.
By Jennifer Scott , political reporter
Labour's Angela Rayner has attacked the Conservatives for "obsessing" over her living arrangements while renters continue to face uncertainty over the government's promise to end no-fault evictions.
The party's deputy leader has come under scrutiny over the sale of her former Stockport home before she was an MP, with claims she did not pay the right amount of capital gains tax and may have registered to vote at the wrong address - allegations she denies.
Greater Manchester Police are now looking into the latter issue, which could be a breach of electoral rules, following a complaint from Tory MP James Daly.
But standing in at Prime Minister's Questions on the day the much-delayed Renters' Reform Bill returned to the Commons, Ms Rayner said: "I know this party opposite is desperate to talk about my living arrangements, but the public want to know what this government is going to do about theirs."
Ministers first promised to scrap no-fault evictions - or Section 21s - in April 2019, but agreed to an indefinite delay to outlawing the mechanism after a group of Conservative backbenchers, including some landlords, raised concerns that the courts were not prepared for the legal cases that could replace them.
A new clause being added to the bill by the government today would, if approved, order an assessment of the courts before any ban could be enacted. But it offers no timetable for when the probe would have to take place.
