Tour de France 2023 Favourites stage 19: Sprinters or attackers

Mads Pedersen - Tour de France 2023 Favourites stage 19: Sprinters or attackers

The route goes either up or down during the entire day, although the gradients are gentle. Actually, the riders race from false flat to false flat section, while two ascents are KOM classified. The Côte du Bois de Lionge – 1.9 kilometres at 5.7% – appears early in the race and the Côte d’Ivory – 2.3 kilometres at 5.9% – is crested with 28 kilometres to go.

The riders then descent to Arbois before the final 21.8 kilometres are played out on the flat.

The elevation gain totals almost 2,000 meter.

Who's going to take the most number of stages of the sprinters for this year's Tour de France. Are there enough sprint stages that Cavendish will be able to nab one to claim the record over Mercx? As he wants us all to know, and fairly so, that he has the record for the most stage wins at the Tour, it just so happens Mercx got their first. But they're on equal footing he wants us to know 🙃

Suffice to say, according to PCS Cavendish isn't even in the top ten sprinters headed to the Tour, which makes a lot of sense given the abysmal form, lack of sprint train or combination of both he's shown in the early season. The Giro win seems to have cured everyone's mind of that though. Not PCS though, and not us. We're not silly enough to fall prey to recency bias. Said us never. We're human. PCS isn't.

That being said, this ranking has a bias in the fact that PCS will lean to promote riders who have raced more this season. So sprinters like Biniam Girmay who just recently started their comeback (nice 4th @ Brussels Classic Girmay!) after a nasty sprint crash, won't be making this list despite their calibre.

Sprinters should stick around to at least either stage eight or stage twelve depending on how good they are at hill climbing. Stage nine has Puy de Dôme on it, and it's not the toughest climb in the book, but not every sprinter can climb like Pedersen proved remarkably adept at in the Giro. Stage thirteen has Grand Colombier, and if any sprinter wanted to bow out before the classic Tour climb we wouldn't blame them.

After doing all the research for this article we also decided that we should probably also do a top ten best victory poses. Some of these riders can really bust a move on the line. But on with the show! We were told by multiple people to do these backwards now to build up the suspense so let's do just that.

Number 10 - Wout van Aert (28) - Jumbo Visma

sprinters favorieten tour de france 2023

Coming in at number ten is good ol' Wout van Aert. Potentially the best all arounder in the peloton today if you count cyclocross as well. But otherwise then Pogačar's got the upper hand on him just like everyone else. Apparently though Pog has done some cyclocross at the start of season, so maybe he'd best Wout van Aert there too? Regardless Wout van Aert's coming at the tour after a strong classics season despite "Woutgate" after gifting a slot to Christophe LaPorte at Gent Wevelgem.

Wout van Aert will likely be targeting the green jersey again, and winning sprints helps in that regard. But if push comes to shove with Vingegaard and he's facing the heat, then WVA will most likely have to place his Jumbo Visma domestique duties above la maillort vert. Not the worst thing, as he could just become a stage hunter at that point and win even more spints.

Number 9 - Bryan Coquard (31) - Cofidis

sprinters favorieten tour de france 2023

Cofidis may not have the strongest team, specifically the strongest general classification contender, going to the Tour, but that could prove to be their benefit, allowing them to focus on winning stages with Coquard and Geschke trying to do a repeat of basically winning KOM of the non GC riders.

Coquard has faired rather well this year taking three wins, finishing second twice, and a few top tens. Coquard did the Vuelta last year instead of the Tour, having last completed the nine stages of the sprinters Tour de France, also known as "all the stages the sprinters could do before the hills came".

And we mean, he's French, so that's got to give him a 10% boost to his stats, especially on the first day when the French come out in numbers.

Coquard doesn't necessarily like a lead out, and manages to perform well regardless of whether he gets one or not, managing to slipstream himself through the final bunch.

Number 8 - Jordi Meeus (24) - BORA

sprinters favorieten tour de france 2023

Why is BORA bringing two top sprinters to the same tour? Are they going to swap every day who's leading out who? Probably not going to work super well given that being a solid lead out bae like Danny van Poppel isn't the same as being the top sprinter.

We'll see BORA's strategy when the action kicks off, but we're still a little surprised. Through out the entire season BORA has actively tried to ensure the two's (Meeus and Bennett's) program's don't overlap.

The Belgian has performed well though this season, but never quite managed to nag the top slot other than a 1.1 one day race at Circuit de Charleroi Wallonie. Given it's below World Tour and Pro level we're not lending much weight to that. Trying to prove us wrong today at the Brussels Classic 1.Pro he almost snagged 1rst, but lost to a competitor further down the list.

Recently at the end of April he's managed to pick up two third slots at the Tour of Norway (which didn't have the strongest start list however). Earlier in the year he had a couple podium finishes at Volta Algarve, but his two big world tour stage races of Tirreno - Adriatico and Santos Tour Down Under (the latter he DNS to be fair) never performed superbly.

Number 7 - Sam Bennett (32) - BORA

sprinters favorieten tour de france 2023

BORA's second hotshot, the Irish sprinter has been performing decently after his little hop back and forth between BORA and Quickstep. This year, Bennet's had one win, the first race he did for the season, a Vuelta San Juan, following it up with a 4th and 3rd directly after, and then a 2nd placed finish on the penultimate stage.

Since then he's started to drag his feet a little - but not by much. Bennett followed up his performance at San Juan with a strong UAE tour, narrowly missing out winning a stage twice. Once again at Paris Nice, he almost secured the first stage and was in the running on the fifth, but never managed to take a win.

Overall though, on the stages where sprinter's could perform, he's almost always ended up on the podium or close there to it.

So we think if BORA can figure out who is riding for who, Bennett could prove to be a hot commodity in those bunch sprints.

Number 6 - Caleb Ewan (28) - Lotto Dstny

sprinters favorieten tour de france 2023

Ah, the small yet powerful Caleb! We wonder if he'll be wearing that distinctive black helmet with white dots. Or is it a white helmet with black dots? We can't remember, regardless though it's distinctive and you'll be able to pull Caleb out from the crowd. We bet that Caleb also hopes he can pull himself out from the crowd, specifically the final sprint crowd.

We were concerned with Caleb's performance earlier in the year but he's been coming into supreme form in the later season and could be peaking at just the right time. Maybe it was getting sick from all his kiddos that through him on training plan at the start.

Caleb still started decently with a 2nd at the Tour Down Under and being in contention for a few stages. He also got the short end of the stick, or short end of the bike if we dare say, at the first stage of the UAE Tour where the photo finish was 100% equal with Tim Merlier. We still stand by they should have done a 1km sprint as the UCI rules state for ties.

With decent performances at Tour de Hongrie, and finally a win at Van Merkstejin Fences Classic, followed by a second at Ronde van Limburg we're excited to see if he can translate his recent form to the Tour. At worst he can lead out Cavendish for fun 🙃

Number 5 - Arnaud Démare (31) - Groupama FDJ

sprinters favorieten tour de france 2023

Groupama is coming to the Tour with an incredibly promising team with the likes of Pinot, Madouas, Gaudu and Küng. We're really only seeing one domestique of Geniets. But what is he going to do, pull the entire stage? We guess if Küng isn't time trialing to save his contract he'll help out. And if Pinot's not too worried about his pregnant cows and sheep, and not wanting to battle Geschke for King of the Mountain he'll throw in a pull or two for Gaudu.

But we're getting sidetracked. A little bit. Because who's going to lead out Démare? Probably Küng. But we'll see. Should prove to be interesting.

Just as interesting as Démare's recent year, with him slowly building and getting up to speed it looks like, just in time for the Tour. Démare had a weak showing at the tour down in UAE at the start of the year, but has since then been in the running in a few sprints at Pays de la Loire Tour, and had a standout performance at Boucles de lay Mayenne, winning a stage, and being in the top six in all other stage, taking the green jersey to boot.

Demare tends to like to go long in sprints, which may be beneficial for the Tour given the number of quality sprinters headed there. It also may be just the opposite however, allowing the other sprinters to draft off his wheel before punching through for the win at the line.

Today, the day of writing, he managed to secure a win at the Brussel's classic with strong competition and defeated number 7 Jordi Meeus on the line. It was the 98th win of his career. Looking solid for the Tour, especially as a Frenchman.

Number 4 - Fabio Jakobsen (26) - Soudal - Quick Step

sprinters favorieten tour de france 2023

Jakobsen, the 26 year old Dutchman from Quick Step has had a strong showing at least once in almost all of the races he's entered this season. Jakobsen achieved a win at his second race of the season in San Juan and the followed that up with a second and fourth later in the stage race.

At Volta Algarve he got a fourth, at Tirreno - Adriatico a win on stage two, and at Tour de Hongri took the win, also on the second stage.

Number 3 - Mads Pedersen (27) - Lidl - Trek

sprinters favorieten tour de france 2023

Boy oh boy, has Pedersen been having a season. Not only that, but he's shown he can somewhat climb, surviving until Stage 13 at the Giro this year, the stage they had to modify due to "extreme weather". Really they modified it because the rider's were tired. We're being slightly facetious. There's a lot of gray area that needs to be dealt with respect to the CPA voting process.

And while the Giro didn't have a strong sprint crowd, he did manage to win a stage along with a second, third and two fourth place finishes. Pedersen had a strong showing at each of the spring classics he attended, which cannot be said for everyone else on this list. Pedersen finished 4th at Paris Roubaix, 3rd at RVV, 5th at Dwars door, 5th at Gent Wevelgem, and 6th at Milano San Remo. An impressive palmares already, but to top it off at the Paris Nice stage race took a stage at each spot of the podium respectively (1/2/3).

At his first stage race of the year, Tour du Gard he took a win and second on the first race of his calendar year.

Number 2 - Dylan Groenewegen (29) - Jayco Alula

sprinters favorieten tour de france 2023

What can we say about Groenewegen other than this Dutchman is fast when he gets going. Groenewegen has won five Tour de France in his career and we're sure he'd like to take even more as a newly minted 30 year old (his birthday's on the equinox).

Groenewegen took the points jersey, a stage, and a few other top slots at the sprinter's Tour de France, aka the Saudi Tour, aka the echelon Tour, Groenewegen's first stage race of the year.

Groenewegen followed that up with a win at that UAE Tour against strong competition, and almost always being in the running for every other potential sprint stage that followed.

At Tirreno Adriatico he narrowly missed taking stage seven, being just behind the next sprinter on this list. Another strong highlight was finishing fourth at Scheldeprijs. Fourth you say? That's out of the top three. Not even a podium. We wouldn't win anything on our each way bets. Fair enough, but it is colloquially known as the sprinter's World Champs, and fourth isn't too shabby.

Groenewegen most recent performances have looked strong as well, with a 1rst on stage one of Tour de Hongrie, and a win at the Veenendaal classic.

Number 1 - Jasper Philipsen - Alpecin (25) - Deceuninck

sprinters favorieten tour de france 2023

The man, the myth, the legend. Not quite. But Philipsen has had an superbly strong season thus far. He may not have completed a whole bunch of races compared to his competitors on this list, but as Matteo Jorgenson said in a recent interview, "being close doesn't matter". And that's true. Especially for our bets. And if you're concerned about your bets then Philipsen is your man.

When it's possible for a sprint, and he's in the running, he has achieved a podium in all but one event, narrowly missing it at Dwars door Vlaanderen and finished fourth.

Otherwise he's had four wins, one being at Scheldeprisj, the World Champs for sprinters. On top of that he's finished 2nd 3 times, with one of those coming at the renowned Paris Roubaix.

And the results have been at high calibre events with high calibre competitors like at Tirreno Adriatico a World Tour stage race.

Oh yah - Mark Cavendish

Yah we'll give a shout out to Cavendish. Mainly to satisfy the English speaking audience who probably only have heard of him and potentially Ewan on this list. Maybe Bennett, but that's more likely to the kerfuffle with Patrick Lefevere in the media the prior years.

At the end of the day though, we hope Cavendish picks up his thirty fifth win and solely takes the record on hit shoulders rather than Mercx. This new era of cycling needs a new champion sprinter in our opinion. Even if he is headed out the door in a few months.

Cavendish has proved remarkably adept at squeaking in to potentially close wins despite the lack of a lead out train. Cees Bol is going, unlike the Giro, and we hope the two of them can finally work their kinks out and that Cav is flying. Or Kwiatkowski can take the reins from G and lead him out on the final day.

Maximaal aantal punten: 50 – 30 – 20 – 18 – 16 – 14 – 12 – 10 – 8 – 7 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2

Tour de France 2023 – Analysing the contenders

The final form ranking for the yellow jersey contenders

Jonas Vingegaard Tadej Pogacar Tour de France

Most of the hard work has been done and there is precious little time to conjure up form, condition or confidence for the 2023 Tour de France favourites. The big race, starting in Bilbao on July 1, is almost here.

That means it’s final tune-up time: the Critérium du Dauphiné and Tour de Suisse have given us the final display of form for the WorldTour’s best, with only their final preparations separating them from La Grande Boucle.

As ever, Cyclingnews has its form ranking for the favourites, with regular updates through the season and into the Tour itself.

We rank the Tour de France contenders by their performances and as the months have now trickled down to scant days before the Grand Départ in Bilbao, it's time to run the rule over the contenders for the maillot jaune for a final time.

1. Tadej Pogačar

  • Team: UAE Team Emirates
  • Tour experience: Winner in 2020 and 2021, runner-up in 2022
  • 2023 results: 1st at Jaén Paraíso Interior, 1st with three stage wins at Ruta del Sol, 1st with three stage wins at Paris-Nice, 4th at Milan-San Remo, 3rd at E3 Classic, 1st at Tour of Flanders, 1st at Amstel Gold Race, 1st at La Flèche Wallonne, DNF at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 1st at Slovenian Nationals Time Trial, 1st at Slovenian Nationals Road Race

Tadej Pogacar is a major favorite for the Tour de France after an exceptional 2023 season

It was a spring campaign for the ages from the voracious and versatile Pogačar. However, it ended unceremoniously when a fractured wrist at Liège-Bastogne-Liège led to several weeks off the bike, though he was soon putting in long indoor training sessions to compensate.

In late May, he went out to Sierra Nevada (later than his teammates) to do more preparation. He then headed to Sestriere for a final bit of training and recon in the rarefied air.

It remains to be seen whether the injury affects him or if his glorious, tiring spring has any impact but Pogačar indicated that he’s not worried in his latest interview with Cyclingnews . The only races on his schedule between Liège and the Grand Départ were the Slovenian national time trial and road race, both of which he won hands down, which hardly augers badly.

Pogačar will have to be at his best to beat Vingegaard, but revenge has likely been on his mind ever since the finale of last year’s race. You’d be a fool to write him off.

=1. Jonas Vingegaard

  • Team: Jumbo-Visma
  • Tour experience: Winner in 2022, runner-up in 2021
  • 2023 results: 1st with three stage wins at O Gran Camiño, 3rd at Paris-Nice, 1st with three stage wins at Itzulia Basque Country, 1st with two stage wins at Critérium du Dauphiné

Jonas Vingegaard

With Pogačar out of racing sight and more out of mind for much of the build-up to the Tour, Jonas Vingegaard was the focal point for rivals and observers alike with his strength and ease. They’re so closely-matched, we’ve put the pair in equal first.

After a three-week altitude camp at Sierra Nevada, he passed his last test at the Critérium du Dauphiné with flying colours, winning a brace of stages and the overall, with the biggest winning margin since Charly Mottet in 1987. As if that wasn’t enough, after the race the defending champion indicated he can still improve.

Back in March, Pogačar got the better of Vingegaard at Paris-Nice . Both he and Pogačar have similar remarkable win rates this year but of course the Tour de France is the one that counts above all others. The form book and results suggest it’ll be their duel for glory. All roads lead to Bilbao and a renewal of hostilities between the two titans of the 2022 edition.

3. Jai Hindley

  • Team: Bora-Hansgrohe
  • Tour experience: none
  • 2023 results: 16th at Tour Down Under, 32nd at Cadel Evans Race, 13th at Volta ao Algarve, 32nd at Ardèche Classic, 53rd at Drôme Classic, 15th at Tirreno-Adriatico, 8th at Volta a Catalunya, 12th at Amstel Gold Race, 83rd at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 4th at Critérium du Dauphiné

Jai Hindley in action at the Dauphine, with a performance that positioned him as a contender for the Tour

Hindley’s season has shifted up a gear at the perfect time. Following finishes on the fringes at Catalunya and the Amstel Gold Race, he was among the strongest at the Critérium du Dauphiné .

Consistency on the climbs at this mini Tour de France was complemented by one of the best time trial rides of his career, laying the foundations for fourth overall.

With Vingegaard and Pogačar looking like a cut above the rest, it is likely to be a fierce scrap for the third step of the podium. Tour debutant Hindley will have to get through the hubbub of the first week unscathed, but the 2022 Giro d’Italia winner appears to be in pole position to be the best of the rest.

4. Mikel Landa

  • Team: Bahrain-Victorious
  • Tour experience: Five appearances, 4th in 2017 and 2020
  • 2023 results: 7th at Volta Valenciana, 2nd at Ruta del Sol, 7th at Tirreno-Adriatico, 5th at Volta a Catalunya, 2nd at Itzulia Basque Country, 3rd at Flèche Wallonne, DNF at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 22nd at Critérium du Dauphiné

Mikel Landa

We’ve been accustomed to Landa lighting up spring stage races, showing his face at Tirreno-Adriatico , the Volta a Catalunya and Itzulia. His steady run of stage race contention, however, came to an end at the Dauphiné with a particularly poor showing in the time trial. The experienced Basque knows what he’s doing and acknowledged he wasn’t in the best shape before the race. Not ideal, but he’s still on course for a high finish at a TT-light Tour de France.

5. David Gaudu

  • Team: Groupama-FDJ
  • Tour experience: Five appearances, 4th overall in 2022
  • 2023 results: 7th at Tour du Var, 2nd at Ardèche Classic, 4th at Drôme Classic, 2nd at Paris-Nice, 4th at Itzulia Basque Country, DNF at Amstel, Flèche and Liège, 30th at Critérium du Dauphiné

David Gaudu was subdued at the Dauphine, but is still a contender for the Tour de France

Gaudu was off the pace at the Critérium du Dauphiné in the mountains and against the clock. To boot, he copped social media abuse after a few stages. There’s no cause for panic after one poor performance for France’s big hope.

His spring campaign was strong, finishing next best to Tadej Pogačar at Paris-Nice. It also bears remembering that, though he won a stage, Gaudu wasn’t in the frame at last year’s Dauphiné GC either, and that preceded a career-best result.

6. Enric Mas (crashed out on stage 1)

  • Team: Movistar
  • Tour experience: Four appearances, 5th in 2020, 6th in 2021
  • 2023 results: 5th at Ruta del Sol, 6th at Tirreno-Adriatico, 5th at Itzulia Basque Country, 17th at La Flèche Wallonne, DNF at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 17th at Critérium du Dauphiné

Enric Mas

Mas looked like every bit like a Tour de France podium contender eight months ago. He matched his second places in the Vuelta and Il Lombardia with a fan-pleasing, attacking style.

Still, there was little of that on display at the Critérium du Dauphiné. Dropping three minutes to winner Mikkel Bjerg in the time trial was no big surprise; of greater concern was losing nearly that same amount to a flying Vingegaard on the race’s queen stage.

There’s clearly a bit of work to be done to make sure it’s a case of más rather than menos at the Tour de France. Mas wanted to put his COVID-19 abandon of last year’s race well behind him but crashed on stage 1 of the 2023 Tour and was forced out of the race again .

7. Romain Bardet

  • Tour experience: Nine appearances, 2nd overall in 2016, 3rd in 2017
  •  2023 results: 8th at Tour du Var, 11th at Ardèche Classic, 11th at Drôme Classic, 7th at Paris-Nice, DNF at Volta a Catalunya, 9th at La Flèche Wallonne, 15th at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 7th at Tour de Romandie

PORTVALAIS SWITZERLAND APRIL 25 Romain Bardet of France and Team DSM sprints during the 76th Tour De Romandie 2023 Prologue a 682km stage from PortValais to PortValais UCIWT on April 25 2023 in PortValais Switzerland Photo by Dario BelingheriGetty Images

Bardet is Mr. Steady of the stage races, rarely terrible or incandescent. The experienced Frenchman sat fourth overall at the Tour de France last summer until an off-day in the blazing sun to Foix put paid to his podium hopes.

COVID-19 in April didn’t seem to slow him down at the Tour de Romandie , where he was seventh. A fifth place at the Tour de Suisse suggests altitude has honed his condition, and he enters the race as a valuable GC contender for DSM.

8. Ben O'Connor

  • Team: AG2R Citroën Team
  • Tour experience: Two appearances, 4th and a stage in 2021
  • 2023 results: 6th Tour Down Under, 46th Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, 13th Tirreno-Adriatico, 14th Volta a Catalunya, 11th Classic Grand Besançon Doubs, 5th Tour du Jura, 50th Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 3rd Critérium du Dauphiné

Ben O'Connor

The Australian climbs into our top ten after his third place finish at the Critérium du Dauphiné, repeating his result from twelve months ago. Coming off an altitude camp, O’Connor was the surprise factor in the time trial, delivering AG2R-Citroën’s first-ever top-five performance in a WorldTour race against the clock.

Last year’s Tour was a bust for O’Connor , dropped on the cobbled stage and abandoning with a torn glute. The first week, with its hillier Basque Country start, may well suit the rider from Perth better as he hopes to improve on his landmark 2021 showing.

9.   Giulio Ciccone

  • Team: Trek-Segafredo
  • Tour experience: Two appearances, wore the yellow jersey in 2019
  • 2023 results: 2nd and stage win at Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, 5th at Tirreno-Adriatico, 7th and stage win at Volta a Catalunya, 5th at Flèche Wallonne, 13th Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 11th and stage win at Critérium du Dauphiné

Giulio Ciccone

After storming the Bastille in Grenoble for triumph on the last day of the Dauphiné, the little Italian surges into our top ten. Ciccone has talked of going for a Tour de France stage victory and the King of the Mountains this summer. Consistency has been his big problem in Grand Tours.

It could be different this summer. Ciccone has had three victories and barely been out of the top 10 in 2023, in spite of COVID-19 dumping him out of a Giro d’Italia team he was due to lead.

His self-belief will be sky high and he’ll be in a positive frame of mind, getting married weeks before the race. With few time trial kilometres in the 2023 race, a top-10 finish is within his reach.

With the Tour on the horizon, there is no clear leader for Ineos Grenadiers.

Dani Martínez has been targeting that spot since the start of the season, but the last day of the Critérium du Dauphiné likely knocked the Colombian’s confidence. He was the race’s big loser, losing 10 minutes and tumbling down the GC from sixth overall.

A simple jour sans or indicative of a bigger problem? The Colombian was flying on the way to first place at February’s Volta ao Algarve but hasn’t broken the top 10 on GC since.  Martínez has had a poor start to the Tour, losing 3:13 on stage 1 and a further 7:00 on stage 2 to fall out of overall contention.

Third with Geraint Thomas last year, Ineos Grenadiers are at risk of having their most peripheral Grande Boucle in years. But the kids could step up. Tom Pidcock , who finished a disappointing 22nd at the Tour de Suisse, showed his off-road form in recent weeks, winning in Nove Mesto. In an interview with Cyclingnews the Briton laid out his stage goals but was reticent to see himself as a GC contender just yet.

Former Spanish national champion Carlos Rodríguez’s ninth overall in the Alps eclipsed Martínez’s performance. Rodríguez was the silver lining on a poor opening stage for the British team and was the only Ineos rider in the top 10 after the brutal Grand Depart in the Basque Country.

Bubbling under

Egan Bernal is one of the great question marks of the 2023 season

Put out a search party for Simon Yates. The Jayco-Alula man has not raced since stomach problems forced him to abandon the Tour de Romandie on stage 2. This summer, less is evidently more for the Briton. He is set to go straight from training at altitude to the Grand Départ. He was second at the Tour Down Under and fourth at Paris-Nice, but his form is unknown.

EF Education-EasyPost leader Richard Carapaz was on the attack at the Critérium du Dauphiné and sprinted to second place behind Julian Alaphilippe. The Olympic champion is flying under the radar a little; he’s not finished in the top 10 in a GC since being runner-up at last year’s Giro d’Italia.

Unfortunately, Carapaz was involved in the same crash that forced Enric Mas out of the Tour, and abandoned before stage 2 with a fractured patella.

Neilson Powless showed his all-round power through Paris-Nice and the spring Classics, and he gives a potential other option for EF.

Louis Meintjes (Intermarché Circus Wanty) showed he’s ticking along nicely, finishing seventh at the Dauphiné. Cofidis captain Guillaume Martin was a few seconds and a place higher. Sergio Higuita could be a backup option for Bora-Hansgrohe. Expect those three to be in the mix come July.

2019 Tour de France champion Egan Bernal also performed well in the Critérium du Dauphiné high mountains to finish twelfth overall. Given his knee problems this year, it’s surely too soon for Tour contention, but with confirmation of his team selection it's clear his recovery from his life-threatening crash appears to be going well.

With his withdrawal from the race with illness, Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan Team) didn't give us a showing of his form at the Tour de Suisse, having finished top 10 in the past two editions, but he did win both the road race and time trial in the Kazakh Nationals. Lutsenko's GC hopes were ruined on stages 1 and 2 where he lost a combined 18 minutes to the leaders and he will likely now chase stage wins.

As for the Giro d’Italia giants?  Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) and Primož Roglič  (Jumbo-Visma)  won’t be at the Tour , which makes sense, but it’s a shame for the fans. The sport’s blue riband event also comes too soon for Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos Grenadiers) who crashed out of the Giro d’Italia with a fractured hip.

Tour de France 2023 – Robbie McEwen’s sprinter rankings as Mark Cavendish given 1% chance of stage win

Ben Snowball

Updated 30/06/2023 at 11:30 GMT

Eurosport expert and 12-time Tour de France stage winner Robbie McEwen ranks the top sprinters at the 2023 Tour de France. But anyone hoping for a Mark Cavendish victory on his swansong appearance are about to have their bubble of optimism burst, with McEwen claiming there are a group of fast men more likely to win a stage than the Manx Missile. Still, he’s happy to be proved wrong…

Adam Becket

The 2023 men's Tour de France began in Bilbao, Spain on Saturday, July 1, with a route that looks set to be one for the climbers. It features four summit finishes, including a return for the iconic Puy de Dôme climb for the first time since 1988.

There is just one time trial across the three-week event, a short uphill race against the clock from Passy to Combloux over 22km. There are also returns for other epic climbs like the Col de la Loze and the Grand Colombier, with 56,400 metres of climbing on the Tour de France 2023 route.

The race started on foreign soil for the second year in a row, with a Grand Départ in the Spanish Basque Country , the setting for the race's 120th anniversary. There were two hilly stages in Spain, before the peloton crossed the border into France for a stage finish in Bayonne on day three.

After visiting Pau for the 74th time on stage five, the race's first real mountain test came on stage six, leaving Tarbes and cresting the Col d’Aspin and Col du Tourmalet before a summit finish in Cauterets.

On stage seven, the Tour’s second most visited city, Bordeaux, will welcome its first stage finish since 2010, when Mark Cavendish claimed his 14th of a record 34 stage wins. Leaving nearby Libourne the next day, stage eight will head east on a 201km slog to Limoges.

Before the first rest day, the riders will wind up to the summit of the Puy de Dôme, a dormant lava dome which hasn’t featured in the Tour for 35 years. They’ll then enjoy a well-earned day off in Clermont-Ferrand before continuing their passage through the Massif Central.

France’s national holiday, 14 July, will be celebrated next year with a summit finish on the Grand Colombier, the site of Tadej Pogačar ’s second stage win back in 2020. From there, the mountains keep coming. The riders will climb over the Col de Joux Plaine to Morzine on stage 14, before another mountaintop test in Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc the next day.

The sole individual time trial of the Tour de Franc route comes on stage 16, when a hilly 22km dash from Passy to Combloux will give the GC contenders a chance to force time gaps. The following day will bring the stage with the highest elevation gain, counting 5000m of climbing en route to the Courchevel altiport, via the Cormet de Roselend and the monstrous Col de la Loze.

On stages 18 and 19, the sprinters are expected to come to the fore, with flat finishes in Bourg-en-Bresse and Poligny.

The penultimate stage will play out in the country’s most easterly region, ascending the Petit Ballon, Col du Platzerwasel and finishing in Le Markstein, as the Tour de France Femmes did last year.

The riders will then undertake a 500km transfer to the outskirts of Paris for the curtain-closing stage. The final day will start at France’s national velodrome in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, the track cycling venue for the 2024 Olympics, and will conclude with the customary laps of the capital’s Champs-Elysées.

The 2023 Tour de France will begin on 1 July, with the winner crowned in Paris on 23 July.

Jonas Vingegaard climbs at Itzulia Basque Country

Jonas Vingegaard raced in the Basque Country this year

Tour de France route week summary

Tour de france week one.

The race began in Bilbao, starting in the Basque Country for the first time since 1992, when the Tour started in San Sebastian. The first two stages are packed full of climbs, with ten classified hills in over the opening couple of days, meaning there will be a fierce battle for the polka-dot jersey. Watch out for Basque fans going crazy on the roadside.

Stage three saw the race cross into France, which it will not leave for the rest of the 18 days. As expected we saw a sprint finish in Bayonne, even after four categorised climbs en-route. Nothing is easy this year.

The fourth day was another sprint, on a motor racing circuit in Nogaro, as the race moved, ominously, towards the Pyrenees. The Hors Categorie Col de Soudet on stage five was the first proper mountain of the race, and was followed by the Col de Marie Blanque, which has tough gradients. A GC day early on, although they are all GC days, really.

Stage five was a mountain top finish in Cauterets-Cambasque, but its gradients didn't catch too many out; it is the Col d'Aspin and Col du Tourmalet that will put people through it.

The seventh day of the race was a chance for the riders to relax their legs as the race headed northwest to an almost nailed-on sprint finish, before another opportunity for the the remaining fast men presented itself on stage eight - after two category four climbs towards the end, and an uphill finish.

The long first week of the race - which will have felt longer because last year had a bonus rest day - ended with the mythical Puy de Dôme.

Tour de France week two

Magnus Cort in the break at the 2022 Tour de France

Magnus Cort in the breakaway on stage 10 of the Tour de France 2022

The second week begins with a lumpy road stage around Clermont-Ferrand, starting from a volcano-themed theme park. This will surely be a day for the break. The next day could also be one if the sprint teams fail to get their act together, with two early categorised climbs potential ambush points.

Back into the medium mountains on stage 12, with a finish in the wine making heartland of the Beaujolais, Belleville. Another day for the break, probably, but none of the five categorised climbs are easy.

The following day, stage 13, is France's national holiday, 14 Juillet. The Grand Colombier at the end of the day is the big attraction, with its slopes expected to cause shifts on the GC. Stage 14 is yet another mountain stage as the Tour really gets serious, with the Col de la Ramaz followed by the Col de Joux Plane. The latter, 11.6km at 8.5%, will be a real test for a reduced peloton, before a downhill finish into Morzine.

The final day of week two, stage 15, is yet another day in the Alps before a rest day in Saint-Gervais-Mont-Blanc. There is nothing as fearsome as the previous days, but 4527m of climbing should still be feared.

Tour de France week three

Tadej Pogačar time trials at the 2022 Tour de France

Tadej Pogačar in the final time trial at the 2022 Tour de France

The third and final week begins with the race's only time trial, 22km long and with a lot of uphill. It is not a mountain event, but it is certainly not one for the pure rouleurs .

Stage 17 looks like the race's Queen Stage, with the final climb up to the Col de la Loze looking incredibly tough on paper, and in real life. That follows the Col de Saisies, the Cormet de Roselend and the Côte de Longefoy, adding up to 5,100m of climbing. The race might be decided on this day.

After that, there is a nice day for the sprinters on stage 18, with a flat finish in Bourg-en-Bresse surely one for the fast men. The next day, stage 19 could be a breakaway day or a sprint finish, depending on how desperate teams are feeling, or how powerful the remaining leadout trains are.

The final mountainous day comes on the penultimate stage, with the men following the Femmes lead and finishing in Le Markstein. However, there's no Grand Ballon, just the Petit Ballon, and so unless something chaotic happens, there should not be great time switches on this stage.

Then, at last, there is the usual finish on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, after the race heads out of Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, which has a long-term deal to host the start of Paris-Nice too. ASO country.

Remember, this will be the last time Paris hosts the Tour de France until 2025. So, be prepared.

Tour de France 2023: The stages

Stage one: Bilbao to Bilbao (182km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 1 profile

The opening stage is very lumpy

There was no easing into the Tour de France for the peloton this year, with a tough, punchy day in the Basque Country. Adam Yates took the first yellow jersey of the 2023 Tour de France after a scintillating stage in the Basque Country that saw the overall battle for the Tour take shape at the earliest opportunity.

The Briton emerged clear over the top of the final climb of the stage, the short and steep Côte de Pike, with his twin brother Simon a few seconds behind him. The pair worked well together to stay clear of the chasing bunch of GC contenders before Adam rode his brother off his wheel inside the final few hundred metres to claim victory.

Stage two: Vitoria-Gasteiz to Saint Sebastian (208.9km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 2 profile

Still in the Basque Country, there is a Klasikoa theme to stage two

This was the longest stage of the Tour, surprisingly.  Five more categorised climbs meant  it was unlikely to be a sprint stage, including the Jaizkibel, famous from the Clasica San Sebastian, tackled on its eastern side 20km from the finish. This second stage from Vitoria Gasteiz to San Sebastian on the Basque coast followed many of the roads of the San Sebastian Classic, held here every summer.

An early break was soon established in the first 50km and established a three-minute advantage. However, the break was reeled in and a group, including the yellow jersey Adam Yates, pressed towards the finish with Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) clearly hoping it would finish in a sprint.

Victor Lafay (Cofidis) had other ideas however, and with all and sundry already having attacked Van Aert, Lafay finally made it stick with a kilometre to go, holding off the reduced bunch all the way to the line.

Stage three: Amorebiata-Etxano to Bayonne (187.4km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 3 profile

Still some hills, but this should be a sprint stage

The third stage took the riders from Amorebieta-Etxano in the Basque Country and back into France, finishing at Bayonne in what was always tipped to be a bunch sprint.  Ultimately, despite a very strong showing in the leadout by Fabio Jakobsen's Soudal-Quick Step team, it was Jasper Philipsen who triumphed , having benefited from a deluxe leadout by team-mate Mathieu Van Der Poel.

Mark Cavendish, who is hunting for a record 35th stage win in what will be his final Tour de France, was sixth.

Stage four: Dax to Nogaro (181.8km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 4 profile

A nailed on bunch sprint, surely. Surely!

Now this one was always going to be a sprint finish, right? It finished on a motor racing circuit in Nogaro, meaning teams have a long old time to sort their leadout trains.  After a sleepy day out all hell broke lose on the finishing circuit with a series of high speed crashes. Jasper Philipsen was one of the few sprinters to still have a lead-out man at his disposal and when that lead-out man is of the quality of Mathieu van der Poel he was always going to be very difficult to beat. So it proved with Australian Caleb Ewan chasing him down hard but unable to come around him.  Philipsen's win handed him the green jersey too .

Stage five: Pau to Laruns (162.7km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 5 profile

The first proper mountain, and the first sorting out, as early as stage five

The first Hors Categorie climb of the race came on stage five, the Col de Soudet, which is 15.2km at 7.2%, before the Col de Marie-Blanque and its steep gradients. It certainly ignited the GC battle!

A break that at one point contained 37 riders was never allowed more than a few minutes, but that proved unwise for Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar behind. Ultimately, with the break already splintering on the final big climb – the Col de Marie-Blanque – Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe), riding his first Tour de France, attacked.

With Hindley time trialling the largely downhill 18km to the finish, Vingegaard attempted to chase him down – and put time into Pogačar as he did so.

Picking up strays from the early break on the way, Vingegaard got to within 34 seconds of Hindley, but it wasn't enough to stop the Australian from taking the stage win, and the yellow jersey .

Stage six: Tarbes to Cauterets-Cambasque (144.9km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 6 profile

While in the Pyrenees, why not tackle a few more mountains?

A day of aggressive racing in the Pyrenees towards the first summit finish saw Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) take the yellow jersey but Tadej Pogačar (UAE Emirates) win the stage .

Having had his team set a blistering pace on the Col du Tourmalet, Vingegaard attacked with 4km until the summit. Only Pogačar could follow him as yellow jersey holder Jai Hindley dropped back to the peloton

Having joined up with super domestique Wout van Aert over the top, the group of favourites were towed up the first half of the final climb before Vingegaard attacked. Once again Pogačar followed and with two kilometers to go the Slovenian counter-attacked.

He clawed back nearly half a minute by the line, making the race for yellow a three horse race between those two and Hindley in the process.

Stage seven: Mont-de-Marsan to Bordeaux (169.9km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 7 profile

Bordeaux is always a sprint finish

Renowned as a sprint finish town, Bordeaux didn't disappoint the hopeful fastmen –except perhaps for Mark Cavendish, who had to concede victory to hat-trick man Jasper Philipsen, despite a very strong charge for the line from the Manxman .

With Cavendish hunting that elusive 35th record stage win, and having won here last time the Tour came visiting in 2010, many eyes were on the Astana Qazaqstan rider, with on-form Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) who has won twice already, starting as favourite.

The day began with Arkéa-Samsic's Simon Gugliemi forging what turned out to be a solo break that lasted 130 kilometres. He was joined by Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies) and Nans Peters (Ag2r-Citroën) halfway through the stage, the trio forming a purposeful triumvirate of home riders.

However, with the sprinters and their teams on the hunt and few places to hide on what was a hot day crammed with long, straight roads, the break served only as a placeholder for the day's main action in Bordeaux.

A technical finish with roundabouts aplenty, first Jumbo-Visma (in the service of GC leader Jonas Vingegaard) and then Alpecin-Deceuninck took the race by the scruff of the neck in the final. Philipsen enjoyed a marquee leadout from team-mate Mathieu Van Der Poel, but when Cavendish turned on the afterburners at around 150m and leapt forward, the whole cycling world held its breath.

That 35th stage win had to wait for another day though, with Philipsen sweeping past in what was yet another command performance from the Belgian.

Stage eight: Libourne to Limoges (200.7km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 8 profile

Three categorised climbs in the final 70km could catch people out

Mads Pedersen powered to victory up a punchy finish on stage eight of the  Tour de France , managing to hold off green jersey  Jasper Philipsen  in the process.

Pedersen, the Lidl-Trek rider, now has two Tour stage wins to his name, in a finish which mixed pure sprinters and punchier riders. Alpecin-Deceuninck's Philipsen was third, with Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) in third. To prove how mixed the top ten was, however, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) finished behind the likes of Corbin Strong (Israel-Premier Tech) and Bryan Coquard (Cofidis).

On a day which could have been one for the breakaway, the race was controlled expertly by Jumbo, Trek and Alpecin for their options, and so the escapees were never allowed much time. Sadly, stage eight turned out to Mark Cavendish's last - the Astana-Qazaqstan rider crashed heavily and was forced to abandon .

Stage nine: Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat to Puy de Dôme (184km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 9 profile

The Puy de Dôme is back, and is vicious

In a north American showdown it was Canada that came out on top as  Michael Woods  beat American rival  Matteo Jorgenson  to the win atop the legendary Puy de Dôme.

Jorgenson had gone solo form a breakaway with 40km left to race. However, on the slopes of the Puy de Dôme where the gradient remains over 105 for more than four kilometres, Woods closed the gap and came around Jorgenson with just 600m left to go.

In the final kilometre, of what had been a blisteringly hot day with temperatures north of 30 degree Celsius, Tadej Pogačar managed to drop Jonas Vingegaard but the Jumbo-Visma captain dug deep to minimise his losses and came across the line eight seconds down.

Stage 10: Vulcania to Issoire (162.7km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 10 profile

Five categorised climbs over this Volcanic stage

The breakaway had its day in Issoire, as Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) won beneath the scorching sun in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

After a frantic start, the mood finally settled and a 14-rider move went clear. Krists Neilands (Israel Premier Tech) launched a solo bid with around 30km remaining, but was caught in the closing moments by a chasing group led by Bilbao. The Spaniard then policed attacks in the finale, before sprinting to his team's first victory at this year's race.

"For Gino," Bilbao said afterwards, dedicating his win to his late teammate, Gino Mäder .

Stage 11: Clermont-Ferrand to Moulins (179.8km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 11 profile

The flat finalé hints at a sprint, but it could be a break day

After a difficult previous day that was hot and hilly, the bunch allowed the break to go very quickly, with Andrey Amador, Matis Louvel and Daniel Oss quickly gaining three minutes. They were kept on a tight leash though, with the sprinters' teams eyeing a bunch finish. And this they delivered, with Jasper Philipsen winning a fourth stage after a tricky finale.

Stage 12: Roanne to Belleville-en-Beaujolais (168.8km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 12 profile

Hills return, with some steep, punchy ones towards the end

Just like stage ten, Thursday's stage 12 was a fast and frenetic affair on the road to Belleville-en-Beaujolais. A strong group of puncheur type riders eventually got up the road after the breakaway took more than 80 kilometres to form. Ion Izagirre (Cofidis) came out on top at the finish, soloing to the line after a big attack on the final climb of the day.

Stage 13: Châtillon-Sur-Chalaronne to Grand Colombier (138km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 13 profile

Welcome to the Alps, here's an hors categorie climb

Michał Kwiatkowski took an impressive solo victory on the summit finish of the Grand Colombier. The Polish rider caught and passed the remnants of the day's breakaway which included Great Britain's James Shaw to grab his second-ever Tour stage win. Behind the Ineos rider, Tadej Pogačar attacked and took eight seconds back on Jonas Vingegaard in the fight for the yellow jersey.

Stage 14: Annemasse to Morzine Les Portes du Soleil (151.8km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 14 profile

Five categorised climbs, four of which are one and above. Ouch.

Carlos Rodríguez announced himself on his Tour de France debut on stage 14 with a career-defining victory in Morzine. While all eyes were on Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar, the Spaniard broke free on the descent of the Col de Joux Plane and descended as if on rails to the finish.

Stage 15: Les Gets Les Portes du Soleil to Saint-Gervais-Mont-Blanc (179km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 15 profile

Back to a summit finish, there is no escape at this Tour

The breakaway had its day at the summit of Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc. After dedicating his career to domestique duties, the victory went to Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious), who launched a late attack on the steepest slopes and held off Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) to the line.

Stage 16: Passy to Combloux ITT (22.4km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 16 profile

A time trial! But not a flat one

Stage 16 brought the fewest time trial kilometres at the Tour de France in 90 years. On the uphill test to Combloux, Jonas Vingegaard proved the strongest , and by quite a way, too. The Dane's winning margin of 1-38 over Tadej Pogačar left him in the driving seat to taking his second Tour title.

Stage 17: Saint-Gervais-Mont-Blanc to Courchevel (165.7km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 17 profile

Back to  the proper mountains, and there will be no let up on the final Wednesday

The Queen stage brought a career-defining victory for Austrian Felix Gall (AG2R Citroën), but all eyes were on the GC battle, and the demise of Tadej Pogačar. The UAE Team Emirates rider cracked on the slopes of the Col de la Loze, losing almost six minutes to Jonas Vingegaard, and slipping to 7-35 in the overall standings.

Stage 18: Moûtiers to Bourg-en-Bresse (184.9km)

Denmark's Kasper Asgreen put in one of the best performances of the race to grab his first-ever Tour victory . The Soudal Quick-Step rider was part of a four man breakaway that managed to hold on all the way to the line by just a handful of seconds ahead of the peloton.

Stage 19: Moirans-en-Montagne to Poligny (172.8km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 19 profile

Another sprint, maybe, or a heartbreaking chase which fails to bring the breakaway back

Matej Mohorič of Bahrain Victorious took an emotional victory in Poligny after a chaotic day of racing. The Slovenian rider launched an attack with Kasper Asgreen and Ben O'Connor on the final climb of the hilly stage before beating his breakaway compatriots in a three-up sprint for the line. It was Mohorič's third-ever Tour victory.

Stage 20: Belfort to Le Markstein Fellering (133.5km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 20 profile

One last chance. Six categorised climbs, will it shake up the GC?

The race might be very near Germany at this point, but Belfort remained French after the Franco-Prussian War, unlike the territory the penultimate stage travels into.

This is the last chance saloon for all teams and riders who aren’t sprinters, especially those with GC ambitions. However, it is not quite the task of the previous Alpine days, with the six categorised climbs not the most testing. Still, there will be a lot of people trying to make things happen.

Stage 21: Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines to Paris (115.1km)

Tour de France 2023 stage 21 profile

The classic Parisian sprint. Lovely.

This will be the last time the Tour heads to Paris until at least 2025, so make the most of those shots of the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Élysées. The classic procession will happen for the first 55km until the race hits the Champs for the first time 60km in. From that point on, anything goes, although that anything will probably be a bunch sprint.

Preview: Analyzing the top contenders and teams for the 2023 Tour de France

Let's take a close look at all the big names – and more – that are set to take on the 2023 Tour de France.

Dane Cash

In less than a week, the 2023 Tour de France will get underway in Spain’s Basque Country. Starting in Bilbao, the Tour peloton will embark on a 21-stage journey that will feature plenty of challenging climbs of all different kinds – from punchy hills near the coast to Pyrenean and Alpine giants – as well as some flatter days and also a single time trial en route to Paris.

We took a look at the route with an in-depth preview just a few days ago, so now it’s time to dive into the peloton itself. Who are the favorites for yellow? Who are the outsiders? Who is going to challenge for stages, for green, for polka dots?

Read on to find out!

The GC battle

Let’s start with the GC picture, where the pre-race hype is deservedly focused on two stars, and then a very, very wide cast of characters hoping to play spoiler. Here’s what to expect in the battle for yellow …

The heavyweight bout: Vingegaard vs. Pogačar

With respect to the rest of the field, this sure looks like a two-horse race, at least barring some kind of catastrophe. Fortunately for us watching, both horses are hard-charging thoroughbreds who seem to be pretty closely matched.

Fans may actually be surprised to learn that, as of publication time, Jumbo-Visma’s Jonas Vingegaard , the defending champ, is the slightest of favorites with most oddsmakers, but it would hardly be a surprise if two-time winner Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) took his third title.

sprinters favorieten tour de france 2023

The biggest question mark is probably Pogačar’s fitness after a lengthy layoff due to a wrist fracture. He did win Slovenia’s time trial and road race titles in the past week or so, but the Tour de France they are not. If Pogačar’s back at his best, he and Vingegaard will be very, very closely matched.

They also have some similarities in their composition, as they are probably the two best climbers on the planet and both also pack a formidable time trial. There are, however, some differences; areas where each rider will try to gain an advantage on the other. Let’s take a closer look – and as we do, we’ll throw in some data visualization to make things clearer.

Using a highly scientific method called “asking some fellow Escape Collective analysts to rate Pogačar and Vingegaard from one to 10 across five different metrics,” we came up with some arbitrary scores for the two favorites on five of the big things that any Grand Tour hopeful needs. Here’s what we came up with:

sprinters favorieten tour de france 2023

Basically, we’re generally in agreement that Pogačar and Vingegaard seem closely matched when it comes to raw climbing ability and time trialing talent. Pogačar probably has a bit of an edge when it comes to explosive efforts and descents, but Vingegaard has a clearer edge in terms of his team support. As such, look for Pogačar to try to attack and hold his advantage on the downhills, and look for Vingegaard to leverage team tactics, which was an extremely successful approach last year.

Given how many opportunities there are on this route for these elite climbers to throw haymakers at each other, hopefully we’ll see some thrilling battles over the next few weeks.

The challengers

The difference between the top-tier pair of contenders and the best of the rest is significant. Each of the next four riders on our list would already be secondary favorites behind the top two, and on top of that, they all have recent question marks in one way or another. They might as well be in a third tier with an empty second tier – but that doesn’t mean they aren’t real contenders for the Tour title just the same. Who’s to say Vingegaard and Pogačar are going to enjoy a misfortune-free race?

The way we see things, the likeliest challengers are David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe), Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost), and Enric Mas (Movistar). Every one of them will appreciate the fact that the route is light on time trials.

Gaudu, fourth last year, seemed like a good bet as a Tour outsider until the Critérium du Dauphiné, where he was way off the pace. Still, that was one event, several weeks before his major objective, and at Paris-Nice earlier this year he was second overall between Pogačar and Vingegaard.

sprinters favorieten tour de france 2023

Hindley is a bit of an unknown as a Tour contender. Sure, he’s a Giro d’Italia winner, but this will be his first ever Tour. Still, his Giro win came ahead of some big names (including one we’re about to mention) and he has a very strong Bora team backing him. Hindley seems like the rider with the highest variety of potential outcomes. If things go south quickly, it won’t be a huge surprise, but at the same time, he has the shortest odds to win the race of anyone not named Jonas or Tadej.

Carapaz will be heading up a new team this year at EF Education-EasyPost. He looked a bit all over the place for the past month, winning the Mercan’Tour Classic Alpes-Maritimes, looking great at times at the Dauphiné, and yet ultimately finishing way down in the standings. In any case, the Olympic road champ has experience and a solid team backing him.

Mas’s form has also been a bit hard to gauge this year. That said, the climbing talent will be well-suited to this route, and he’s no stranger to the Grand Tour leaderboard at this point, with an incredible three career Vuelta runner-up rides (and two top 10s in this race). Somewhat surprisingly, his team will be a bit of a question mark. After years of bringing very strong teams that generally failed to propel a leader to the win, Movistar has a solid leader in Mas but only a handful of good climbers to back him.

Beyond those big four, we’ll highlight three others with a shot: the fast-rising Mattias Skjelmose (Trek-Segafredo), former Vuelta winner Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla), and his brother, UAE super-domestique Adam Yates .

sprinters favorieten tour de france 2023

Skjelmose is an exciting wildcard who is developing into a star before our eyes. After a promising Ardennes campaign, he just won the Tour de Suisse, relying on his fantastic climbing legs and surprisingly excellent TT. This will be his first ever Tour de France. Like Hindley, he seems to have the potential to smash it, but it would also be unsurprising if his debut at the race is just so-so.

Simon Yates will be making his sixth career Tour start, and frankly, his résumé should probably make him more of a favorite, except that he has tended to underwhelm at the Tour, and he also hasn’t done all that much against elite competition lately. Still, he’s a great climber on a climber-friendly route.

As for his brother Adam, this author sees him as one of the most interesting dark horses on the start list. He was better than everybody other than Vingegaard at the Dauphiné, and he knows how to shine on Basque roads, having won the Clásica San Sebastián early in his career. If UAE decides to give him his chances to apply pressure to Jumbo on his own, he could be a particularly dangerous attacker.

Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious), Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich), Ben O’Connor (AG2R Citroën), and the Ineos Grenadiers’ stable of Egan Bernal , Tom Pidcock , and Daniel Martínez are others who could have an eye on the GC battle.

Stagehunters, green, and polka dots

Moving on from the GC picture, let’s look at the riders who are here for stage wins and possibly the other jerseys on offer.

After years of the Tour sprints being the preserve of just a handful of top stars, recent races have seen more names in the mix in the bunch kicks. That continues this year.

Two names stand out as the biggest sprint favorites, with another group just below that who will also be very much in contention. Let’s start with Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Fabio Jakobsen (Soudal QuickStep)

Champing at the bit to overhaul those two names will be the likes of Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco-AlUla), Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Dstny), Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo), Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), Philipsen’s Alpecin teammate Mathieu van der Poel , Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty), Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X) and, of course, Mark Cavendish (Astana-Qazaqstan). Will Cavendish break the record for Tour stage wins? Only time will tell, but there are quite a few sprint opportunities and, as we just said, this does seem like a pretty open competition.

Yours truly thinks he’ll manage it.

As usual, Van Aert will be a contender to win every stage of the Tour for as long as he is in the race, but he has said that he may leave the race early as his wife is expecting their second child in July. If he stays in the race, he’s the green jersey favorite. Otherwise, it will be a much more open affair, with top sprinters Philipsen and Jakobsen and slightly more versatile Van der Poel and Ewan as potential contenders for the points classification in Van Aert’s absence.

On the more climber-friendly stages, Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal QuickStep) leads the way as a potential stage hunter. The Frenchman was back to his winning ways at the Critérium du Dauphiné after a quieter early-season campaign than he probably would have liked. Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo) will also be one to watch basically any time the road goes up. Ditto for Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), Alexey Lutsenko (Astana-Qazaqstan), Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech), Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), and Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe).

Those riders will also be among the big favorites for polka dots, though Pogačar and Vingegaard will be hard to beat there – especially Pogačar, who has the hunger to win everything he can, even including the less coveted polka dot jersey. Both times that he won the Tour de France, he also secured the KOM title, and as much as the likes of Pinot or Ciccone may be in the mix for mountains points, it won’t be easy overtaking the yellow jersey contenders for the polka dots as well.

sprinters favorieten tour de france 2023

Rating the teams

Before we close things out, let’s recap with another visual presentation! This time, we’ll examine some of the teams in the race as a whole. Again, some of us analysts here at the Escape Collective assigned arbitrary ratings across a few categories to a handful of the squads at the 2023 Tour. Then, we plotted our highly scientific “what we think they’re good at” data to visualize how some of the big teams are approaching the race.

sprinters favorieten tour de france 2023

The long and short of it? Jumbo-Visma will probably be in the mix every day. UAE Team Emirates will be all about the climbs. Alpecin-Deceuninck will be all about everything but the high mountains. Ineos has options for most stages but doesn’t have the same amount of firepower as we’ve seen in years past.

sprinters favorieten tour de france 2023

On the one hand, we hope this has been comprehensive enough to give you a thorough idea of which riders to watch at the 2023 Tour. On the other hand, the race will be all the more interesting if some of the hundred or more names we left out of this contenders’ guide decide to get their revenge on us by delivering results in the race. We’ll find out soon enough.

Bring on the Tour!

Favorites stage 4 Tour de France 2023 | Sprinters unleashed in winding finale on car racing track

After three days with over 2500 meters of grueling climbing, it's time for the first truly flat stage of this Tour de France on day four. Between Dax and Nogaro, there are hardly any obstacles on the route, so maybe even Neilson Powless will stay in his cage for once! At IDLProCycling.com , we delve into what to watch out for on Tuesday!

Route stage 4 Tour de France 2023

Stage 4 of the Tour de France 2023 kicks off in Dax, in the southwest of France. From there, the riders begin the almost 182-kilometer stage at 1:20 PM, which barely has any obstacles. Fortunately for the riders, they will have a tailwind for most of the day, although they have to take into account that towards the final 35 kilometers, the wind will turn against them.

Heading towards Vic-Fezensac, we move eastward, with no categorized climbs on the route. Only the meanwhile very familiar intermediate sprint, which comes after 93.6 kilometers at Notre-Dame des Cyclistes. Given the nature of the route and expected race dynamics, it remains uncertain if anyone will be motivated to initiate an early breakaway.

Anyway, let's move on to the grand finale. About 28 kilometers from the finish, we have the Cote de Demu (two kilometers at 3.5 percent), which is the only obstacle of the day, but that's not counting the lightning-fast final phase. The finish line awaits on the Nogaro circuit, also known as Circuit Paul Armagnac.

Unlike some other race tracks, this circuit boasts a completely flat profile, making it ideal for the turbo-charged speed demons in the peloton. However, they must remain sharp in the finale because a circuit is not complete its treacherous turns (something the Alpecin-Deceuninck team, with Mathieu van der Poel in particular, will enjoy). The last three kilometers feature more than five demanding turns, but the final 600 meters offer a long, straight section on the circuit.

Times Start: 1:20 p.m.

Finish: approximately 5:12 p.m.

Weather stage 4 Tour de France 2023

With winds from the east for most of the day, it will be pleasant between Dax and Nogaro, as the wind will be at the riders' backs for most of the day. It will be about 25 degrees Celsius, providing no reason for the riders to complain.

Favorites stage 4 Tour de France 2023

Copy-paste from stage three? Not so fast! Well, perhaps a little bit. At the Nogaro car circuit, two crucial factors come into play: positioning and timing. If there's one team that displayed mastery in these aspects on Monday, it was Alpecin-Deceuninck. Their sprinter, Jasper Philipsen , capitalized on the impeccably executed lead-out work of the car enthusiast, Mathieu van der Poel, who might just want a picture of himself celebrating on a circuit for his collection.

Compared to the stage to Bayonne, we give the pure powerhouses the benefit of the doubt just a tad more, so Fabio Jakobsen quickly comes to mind. The Dutchman has the necessary horsepower in his sprint preparation, along with other fast riders like Yves Lampaert and Kasper Asgreen, as was evident on Monday. This time, the Dutchman will have to hold the wheel of his lead-out Michael Mørkøv.

The other Dutchman, Dylan Groenewegen , mentioned that due to poor positioning, he didn't have a chance to sprint. The Amsterdam native had to start his sprint early and only managed to finish eighth. He too will be hoping to do better in Nogaro;

The somewhat surprising second and third place finishers on Monday were Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious) and Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Dstny). The German and Australian were not considered top favorites beforehand but showed that they can compete. Perhaps on Tuesday, they can take the step to the top scaffold of the podium.

Sam Welsford (DSM-Firmenich) will encounter a stage suited to his strengths here, so he should be considered for the final kilometers as well. The same goes for Belgians Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and Jordi Meeus (BORA-hansgrohe), who have strong lead-outs in Christophe Laporte and Danny van Poppel, respectively.

Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) seems to lack a bit of speed in such a flat sprint, which is also the case, to a lesser extent, for Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) in this Tour. In terms of leg speed and power, these are also the stages where we can expect Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan Team) and Søren Wærenskjold (Uno-X, and not Alexander Kristoff) to have a chance.

Among the riders who can hope for a top ten finish, we have Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies), Bryan Coquard (Cofidis), Corbin Strong (Israel-Premier Tech) and Luca Mozzato (Arkéa Samsic).

10- Carlos Rodriguez - Ineos Grenadier

Ben O'Connor 2023

8 - Romain Bardet - Team DSM

Bardet 2023

7 - David Gaudu - Groupama FDJ

6 - Richard Carapaz - EF Education EasyPost

Richard Carapaz 2023

5 - Jai Hindley - Bora Hansgrohe

Jai Hindley 2023

4 - Mikel Landa - Bahrain Victorious

Attention.

Mikel Landa 2023

3 - Enric Mas - Movistar Team

Enric Mas 2023

2 - Tadej Pogacar - UAE Team Emirates

Tadej Pogacar 2023

1 - Jonas Vingegaard - Jumbo Visma

Jonas Vingegaard 2023

Bonus : Simon Yates - Jayco Alula

Wait and See.

Simon Yates 2023

+++++ Vingegaard

++++ Pogacar

+++ Mas, Gaudu, Landa, Hindley, O'Connor

++ S.Yates, Bardet, Rodriguez, Skjelmose,

+ Powless, Pidcock, Johannessen, G.Martin, Meintjes, Bilbao, Gall, Jorgenson
