Deep Roy ( born 26 January 1949 ; age 75) is an actor and stuntman who played the role of Keenser in Star Trek , Star Trek Into Darkness , and Star Trek Beyond .

A screenshot of Roy from Star Trek is used for card #52, Engineer Keenser, of the virtual collectible card battle game Star Trek: Rivals .

He is noted for playing Max Rebo Band member Droopy McCool, an Ewok, the stunt R2-D2, and Master Yoda during his walking scenes in addition to his work as stand-in for the character Yoda in the two Star Wars films, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983) and for his frequent collaborations with director Tim Burton , particularly his portrayal of all 165 Oompa-Loompas in 2005's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory . In the special features of Star Trek , he is shown doing the Oompa-Loompa dances between takes.

Personal life [ ]

Deep Roy was born Mohinder Purba in Nairobi, (then the British colony of) Kenya, to Indian parents in a Sikh family. He stands at 4 ft. 4 in. (132 cm) tall. Roy began his career in entertainment in England as a stand-up comic in local cabaret clubs.

Television [ ]

Roy's first television appearance was the part of Klokoe in The New Avengers episode "Target!" in 1976 followed by the television short film Benji's Very Own Christmas Story (1978) and several appearances in the British science fiction series Blake's 7 (1978-1980).

In 1977, he appeared as Mr. Sin in the Doctor Who serial " The Talons of Weng-Chiang ". Roy is among the ranks of actors who have appeared in Star Trek and Doctor Who . Given his role in Return of the Jedi , Roy is the first and, along with Simon Pegg , one of only two actors to appear in Star Trek , Doctor Who , and Star Wars on television or film. ( Christopher Neame and W. Morgan Sheppard appeared in Star Trek and Doctor Who on television, and provided voices for Star Wars video games.) Roy returned to the Doctor Who franchise for a role in the 1986 serial The Trial of a Time Lord .

Further television work includes the western Desperado: The Outlaw Wars (1989, with Brad Dourif ) and episodes of Night Stand (1996, with Michael Bofshever ) and The X-Files in the 2001 episode "Badlaa". The X-Files was executive-produced by John Shiban , and the episode in which Roy appeared also featured Jane Daly and Michael Welch . Between 2003 and 2004, Roy appeared in several episodes of the reality comedy show The Jamie Kennedy Experiment .

In 2010, Roy played the role of Aaron in three episodes of the hit HBO comedy series Eastbound & Down , working with Adam Scott and Marco Rodriguez . He also appeared with Leon Russom in an episode of the web series Wolfpack of Reseda (2012).

Roy's first film role was the Italian assassin in the 1976 comedy The Pink Panther Strikes Again , followed by the West German action film Roots of Evil (1979) and Licensed to Love and Kill (1979, with Nick Tate ). In Flash Gordon (1980), Roy played Princess Aura's pet, Fellini. He later appeared as Teeny Weeny, the rider of the "racing snail", in The NeverEnding Story (1984). Fellow Star Trek alum Alan Oppenheimer lent his voice to this latter film. Beside these two films, Roy also worked as puppeteer on The Dark Crystal (1982, choreographed by Gates McFadden ) and Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984).

Roy's subsequent film credits include Starship (1984), Return to Oz (1985), Weekend Warriors (1986, with Lloyd Bridges , Victor Tayback , Graham Jarvis , Matt McCoy , Tom Villard , Camille Saviola , Brenda Strong , Jeff Allin , Randal Patrick , and Mark L. Campbell ), and Mafia! (1998, with Billy Burke , Lloyd Bridges, Gregory Sierra , Andreas Katsulas , Anthony Crivello , and Frank Welker).

He also played the post office clerk in How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), working with Clint Howard , Landry Allbright , and cinematographer Don Peterman . Roy first worked with Tim Burton in Planet of the Apes (2001), in which Roy played the niece of the villain, General Thade. This film also featured Erick Avari , Cary-Hiroyuki , and David Warner in the cast. Roy's next collaboration with Burton was Big Fish (2003), in which Roy played Mr. Soggybottom. Perhaps Roy's most notable performance is that of the Oompa-Loompas in Burton's 2005 adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory . He played all 165 Oompa-Loompas in the film, which sometimes required him to repeat the same movements several hundred times. Each individual performance was then digitally inserted into the film. Roy's most recent collaboration with Tim Burton was Corpse Bride (2005), in which he voiced General Bonesapart.

Other film work include The Haunted Mansion (2003, with Wallace Shawn , Rachael Harris , Michael McAdam , and Derek Mears ) and Surviving Eden (2004). Roy made a cameo appearance as an Egyptian guard in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), which was co-written by Star Trek screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci . The film also featured David Bowe , Spencer Garrett , Aaron Lustig , Glenn Morshower , Eric Pierpoint , and the voices of Robert Foxworth , Tony Todd , and Frank Welker . Roy and Star Trek co-star Leonard Nimoy both lent their voices to Zambezia (2012). He also played the lead role in the 2011 short comedy The Ballad of Sandeep .

Prior to his appearance in Star Trek Into Darkness , Roy filmed the short comedy Jewtholic (2012) and Paranormal Movie (2013). In 2014, he appeared in Mantervention .

Stunt work [ ]

In addition to his acting career, Roy has performed stunts in a number of films. He worked as stunt double for Justin Cooper in the family movie The Adventures of Ragtime (1998, with Mic Rodgers , Dana Hee , Edward Conna , and stunt coordinator Charles Picerni, Jr. ), as stunt double for Spencer Breslin in Disney's The Kid (2000, with Janet Brady , Jeff Imada , Matt McColm , and Manny Perry ), as stunt double in A Man Apart (2003, with Scott Workman and Anita Hart ), and as stunt double for Atticus Shaffer in The Unborn (2009, with Marie Fink and Randy Hall ).

Other films he performed stunts in include Alien (1979), Enemy Mine (1985), Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986, with Dana Dru Evenson , Beth Nufer , and George Wilbur ), Hot Shots! (1991), Hook (1991), Leprechaun (1993, with Kurt D. Lott , Denise Lynne Roberts , and Susan Rossitto ), Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994, starring Heather Langenkamp and with stunts by Chris Doyle , Maria Kelly , and Lynn Salvatori ), The Little Rascals (1994), The Jungle Book (1994), Sudden Death (1995), Matilda (1996, with Dana Dru Evenson, Eddie Hice , and stunt coordinator R.A. Rondell ), Face/Off (1997), BASEketball (1998), Three Kings (1999), and Van Helsing (2004).

Roy also performed stunts in episodes of In the Heat of the Night , Rescue 911 (with host William Shatner ), The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. (coordinated by Chris Doyle ), Buffy, the Vampire Slayer , and Touched by an Angel .

I'm with you on this one, Keenser rocked and needs to beimmortalized in action figure form. Also the salt vampire as a background alien would have been sweet, maybe on the DVD,

Keenser is awesome! He should be the captain of the space station spinoff that is bound to be established somewhere along the way of this next generation. Rock on, Keenser!

I loved Keenser he was quite adorable. I hope he's in the 2011 movie

Keenser is part of my top ten moments of the movie, and appears in at lest 5 of them... If he gets enough fans I bet even Viagra will want him a spokesman

Very good posting. i liked it. :-) Definitely I will stick to your blog on a regular basis. I'm sending it to some friends! -- san jose airport parking

Keenser last edited by NetSpiker on 10/03/23 07:29AM View full history

Keenser was the protagonist of the Star Trek #14 - Keesner of IDW Publishing 's Star Trek: Ongoing, which identifies Keenser as a Roylan from the planet of Royla. Keenser was often ridiculed by his classmates because he was taller than all the others of his species.

In 2230, after first contact with his people was made by the United Federation of Planets Starfleet ship U.S.S. Kelvin. Keenser demonstrated his engineering skills to the Kelvin's first officer and James T. Kirk 's father, Lt. Cmdr. George Kirk, and security officer Lt. K'Bentayr by giving them a complete diagnostic and pinpointing their problem. Keenser was allowed to leave with the Kelvin's away team to join Starfleet.

Keenser graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2233, becoming the first Roylan to have left Royla and join Starfleet, dedicating his service to the fallen George Kirk. Keenser is identified as having the rank of Lieutenant. His service on Delta Vega preceded Scott's , having outlasted all the other personnel formerly employed there.

In " The Tholian Webs, Part 1 ", Keenser was rendered unconscious, after Scott went mad and tried to take over the ship. In " The Tholian Webs, Part 2 " Keenser saves the vessel by knocking out Scotty and devising a way to cause a plasma burst to free the ship. Captain Kirk subsequently noted, in a captain's log entry, that he wished to commend Keenser. They thereafter had a drink together in the ship's lounge and, although Kirk tried to make conversation, Keenser was extremely quiet, as usual.

Alternate Realities

No Caption Provided

In a parallel universe depicted in " Parallel Lives, Part 1 ", a female equivalent of Keenser, named "Keensera", is shown serving as a lieutenant aboard the Enterprise of that reality. Marjorie "Scotty" Scott, the ship's chief engineer, mentions she initially suspected Keensera of causing the entanglement by messing about with the Enterprise's functions in the ship's systems.

Quotes

[Spock Prime and Kirk arrive at a derelict Starfleet outpost, and discover...]

Scotty : You realize how unacceptable this is?

Spock Prime : Fascinating!

Scotty : Okay, I'm sure you're just doing your job, but could you not have come a wee bit sooner? Six months I've been here, living off Starfleet protein nibs and the promise of a good meal! And I know exactly what's going on here, okay? Punishment, isn't it? Ongoing! For something that was clearly an accident!

Spock Prime : [pleased]  You are Montgomery Scott.

James T. Kirk : You know him?

Scotty : Aye, that's me. You're in the right place. Unless there's another hardworking, equally starved Starfleet officer around.

Keenser : Me.

Scotty : Get aff! Shut up! You don't eat anything! You can eat, like, a bean, and you're done. I'm talking about food. REAL food!

Star Trek's Deep Roy Claims Keenser Originally Had Scripted Dialogue

Keenser and Scotty talking to Kirk

Although he may not be a household name, Deep Roy might be the most well-known unknown actor when it comes to science fiction and fantasy films. While his name doesn't scream star power, the actor, stuntman, and puppeteer has been a part of some of the largest franchises across TV and movies. He played Fellini in "Flash Gordon," R2-D2's body double in "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi," Teeny Weeny in "The NeverEnding Story," and, most notably, every Oompa-Loompa in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." He's also lent his talents to movies like "Transformers," "Leprechaun," and Steven Spielberg's most underrated film "Hook."

In 2009, Roy suited up for another sci-fi franchise, adding "Star Trek" to his already insane list of appearances. He appears in the ever-confusing Kelvin Timeline as Keenser, working under Montgomery Scott (Simon Pegg) on the Federation outpost and later the Enterprise. Fans wouldn't instantly recognize Roy in the role, as the makeup department covered his face in prosthetics to transform him into Scotty's alien friend. He appears in all three films of the trilogy but barely has any lines, and if he isn't the comedic relief of the scene, he's taking the fall for some shenanigans that Scotty did.

However, Keenser wasn't always the nearly-silent counterpart to Pegg's character, as Roy originally recorded many lines of dialogue for "Star Trek."

This alien doesn't speak English

During an interview with StarTrek.com , Deep Roy revealed that the original plan for his "Star Trek" character Keenser was to have speaking lines, but J.J. Abrams and crew left them on the cutting room floor.

"I had dialogue, but they changed that," Roy told the website. "They said, 'It doesn't look right for this guy to talk because, after all, he's from another planet. He's an alien. He doesn't speak the language.' So that's what happened on the first film. I did have dialogue, but they took it out. J.J. told me why and I said, 'Sure, whatever it is, it is.' And then it just made sense for him not to speak in the second one, either." Roy continued his walk down memory lane, recalling the day he found out he'd be in the sequel, "Star Trek Into Darkness." The actor said he had already wrapped filming on "Star Trek" when Abrams called him back for one more day to film a scene of him joining the Enterprise crew. He also praised the director and his scene partner, Simon Pegg, saying, "I love Simon. Hopefully, we'll get to do another 'Star Trek' together."

In another interview, Roy commented on being one of the few actors to traverse so many different nerd franchises, saying the fans make all the hard work worth it. At Comic-Con, he told Red Carpet News TV that all of the franchises he's been a part of have been amazing, including "Star Wars" and "Doctor Who." However, "Star Trek" holds a special place in his heart, and he hopes to return for a fourth movie someday.

Star Trek Beyond deleted scene features TOS callback and more Keenser

Kirk and Scotty in deleted scene from Star Trek Beyond

| September 21, 2016 | By: Matt Wright 53 comments so far

Paramount Home Entertainment gave USA Today an exclusive clip of a deleted scene from the forthcoming Star Trek Beyond home video release. The clip comes from right after the Enterprise docks at Yorktown and the crew starts to go explore the station. The clip shows a moment between Kirk and Scotty. We see Kirk feel the loneliness of being at the top, and Scotty has a dinner date with a familiar name from Season 3 of TOS. Click on for the video.

Scotty of course is referring to Lt. Mira Romaine from the TOS Season 3 episode “ The Lights of Zetar “, where she was possessed by aliens, while dating Scotty.

Nice Callback

I loved the part where Keenser sneezed on him LOL!

Thanks for the heads up you dork. You know… there is a reason why the title of this page is not ‘check out Keenser sneezing on Kirk in a deleted scene’ ITS TO GIVE PPL A CHANCE TO WATCH IT FIRST geez

A bigger dork goes straight to the comments section before even viewing the content the comments are commenting about

That was going to be my response. You got it!

Oh stop whining… adulting, you should try it.

Re:Thanks for the heads up

With all the sniffing you had to do to find a way to blame someone else for your unhappiness, I’m surprised you hadn’t sneezed and already spoiled yourself.

To be fair, a wee spoiler alert was called for.

Thankyou, Niall. Look you lot are not wrong… the video simply was not loading. My comment was just reactionary annoyance in the face of a comment that seemed to harbour very little substance to the thread while effectively giving away exactly what the Keenser part would involve.

I shouldnt have read the comments but on some level i mean…. damn. Surprise ruined

This is probably the stupidest comment I’ve ever seen on the Internet. And I occasionally read comments at Breitbart. How the hell is that a surprise? Good grief.

So instead of apologizing for being a dick, you again blame the commenter – again.

So let me get this straight – in a comment section on a 40-second video clip, we’re not allowed to mention the content of the video? Are you also outraged that the story mentions Mira Romaine?

Here’s a tip: The context of an article, including any attached videos, are subject to conversation in a comments section. That’s why the comments exist, to discuss the article content. Spoiler tags are for things not revealed in the article, like content of a movie not shown in the article. So, next time, if you find a link that doesn’t work, best thing to do is Google “star trek beyond deleted scene” and watch it elsewhere, like I had to do for another website where it wasn’t working.

Watch the clip that takes less than two minutes (including the ad) and then come to the comments. Put things into perspective @Melllvar

A spoiler alert for a deleted scene. C’mom, man!

No, it wasn’t. Jeez.

Yeh, like I said — reactionary annoyance. Perhaps I should not have read the comments. But I so enjoy reading the comments! And that is my only comment on the matter.

“Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something.” – Plato

“The Lights of Zetar” was the episode where Memory Alpha made its debut as a thing in Star Trek. Maybe Mira Romaine here is a subtle tribute to Simon Pegg’s admitted favorite website for Trek information?

I had the same thought.

Nice scene (until Keenser, whose appeal has always eluded me). Yorktown was definitely the jewel in this movie’s crown, and I wish we’d seen more of it.

“Nice scene (until Keenser, whose appeal has always eluded me). ”

Right with you there, Mike.

Strays a bit too close to Jar Jar territory.

Something about female crewmembers walking around in yoga pants instead of skirts just feels wrong to me.

Keenser is too blatant comic relief.

I liked that as soon as they reached the station, Kirk dropped rank and was like “Wanna get a drink?” Haha!

wished there was more yorktown. spectacular and beautiful.

That suggests a slightly different, perhaps better, movie. Have the opening scene be Enterprise rescuing the weird traitor woman, taking her to Yorktown. She has gear that analyzes how you ‘get in’ and sends it back to Idris, and then the whole movie takes place at Yorktown during an extended attack/takeover/takeback.

Would have been better than that boring planet, for sure.

You’re right, there were so many seeds of a potentially better action movie. Yorktown under siege like in a Die Hard movie could have been cool.

Reminds me of a rejected Alien III script by “Neuromancer” writer William Gibson that would have been about the siege of a faction-divided space station in the middle of a space Cold War.

I was glad to see Scotty and Kirk in this clip and it reminded me of some nice moments in “Beyond” but I can’t help imagining how much deeper the movie could have dug. Movies like “Frozen” and “Fury Road” show that you can have an exciting summer movie that still manages to have tragedy and something to say about being human.

Someone give Keenser a tissue!

It would dissolve… along with your hand.

OT a bit, but I really did not appreciate being shown a Donald Trump ad before the video. No matter your political affiliation, can we at least all agree that we come to TrekMovie.com to get the latest news on all things Star Trek, and *not* be bombarded with ads from this toxic U.S. election season?

TrekMovie, if you hold any sway over the ads that get shown on your site, please start swayin’.

Given the video is from USA Today, they control what ads run before it. It’s the same if we were to link to a video on YouTube. We would have zero ability to control an ad that play before the video.

I saw a Mass Mutual ad. As I represent a competitor……oh, never mind. TM doesn’t have any ability to control ads. I’m guessing if you fancy adult entertainment, you may have seen one for an outfit that rhymes with Cornhub.

I didn’t get an ad at all, and I watched it 3 times.

Horrid uniforms

Actually I really liked them. They looked like form fitting garments that would be “beamed on” with 23rd century tech

I like them too! They seem to have a TNG 3rd season vibe with the collar.

I can do without Snarf sneezing….OH! I mean Keenser.

Nice call back but Kirk’s feelings were already pretty well established. The scene wasn’t really necessary. If it were used, they still should have cut Keenser’s sneeze.

I like how the Yorktown uniforms look like the SpaceDock Security uniforms in ST: III. Yorktown was definitely a jewel (along with the Enterprise being all TOS and putting up a fight against all odds for more than 30 seconds).

Couldn’t agree more. Those scenes at Yorktown made me want to visit the Trek Universe like nothing since the Spacedock in Star Trek III was first introduced. Totally amazing.

I like the set lighting there. Looks like it came straight out of a TOS episode.

Of course, I had to watch this while I had a head cold and couldn’t stop sneezing…

What a nice deleted scene. I kinda wish it had been in the movie.

Nice light moment, but please, kill off Keenser (not literally, transfer him or something). He is a cross between Jar Jar, and the creature from Alien (acid snot), and serves no purpose. His sneeze would have immediately eaten through Kirks clothes and burned his own Federation jewels. Have we ever seen him do anything, other than blow snot on a door lock? Star Trek has enough opportunities for comic relief without adding a not so cute little creature.

I say throw Keenser out of the nearest airlock.

The frustrating thing to me about Keenser in moments like this is that it seems like, in the name of mass appeal, no scene was allowed to just stand on its own a character drama scene. It felt more like “hey just in case you’re not touched enough by this human scene, here’s someone throwing up at the end, or an explosion, or a massive thing on fire”

and i liked Keenser in ’09

Love every part of this. Glad to see it now, but would have loved it in the film!

I can see why they cut it. It’s a nice tos refence (don’t try too hard with those tho) but it’s not that useful as a scene, if not to hint that Kirk is alone. Spock wouldn’t spend time with him in a bar regardless if he were with his girlfriend or not, but McCoy? I suppose they needed McCoy to be alone too in order to have the scene where he teases Spock about Uhura, but neverthless, if they included this scene it would feel like they needed to explain why Kirk has no friend to spend time with or just have a drink with.

The thing is, as Saldana and Pegg hinted in some interviews, this movie wanted to deal with the fact that the characters are a bit tired and homesick after being in space for so much time so, basically, when they get to this starbase they are all in some need to be a bit alone on their own. The problem is that the audience is not really given that as the director didn’t seem to care that much about this supposed human study of the characters, and the movie did no real attempt to truly develop this theme that surely had potential but it’s left sorely on Kirk’s conflict (likevise, splitting the group into all this duo was a good idea that, in their words, seemed to have the purpose to develop dynamics we didn’t see before.. but in reality outside of Spock/Bones – that isn’t exactly a ‘new’ dynamic never seen before for trek – we didn’t see any interesting development through Kirk/Chekov and Sulu/Uhura. Wasted opportunity again) . It felt like the director just couldn’t wait to get to the cool scene where they destroy the ship so the scenes in this infamous starbase are more than a ‘summary’ of what could have possibly been the purpose of this part of the movie. In the end I don’t really get the sense that the characters re-discovered why starfleet is so important for them because saved for Kirk, I never saw them being tired previoustly.

This was actually a nice moment. Too bad it was cut.
