Knowing the best website to use when booking a flight can save you a bundle of money. And if you are a student, you might be inclined to seek out websites that offer special deals to young travelers.

With so many options, it can be a bit overwhelming to know where to find the best prices, so we set out to make the ultimate list of where to find the best student discounts on flights to save you time when it comes to booking a trip.

StudentUniverse offers flights, hotels, and tours to students.

You have to become a member to access exclusive discounts, but thankfully, it’s a free membership. However, if you don’t want to join as a member, you can still complete a booking as a guest. Many student deals require a membership and are only valid for students ages 16 to 34.

Student Universe flight search results

Regardless of your student status, you’ll be able to access special promo codes that are occasionally offered right on the site.

You can also set up an alert on StudentUniverse that will track the prices for your selected itinerary and email you when there’s a price change.

Unfortunately, StudentUniverse sometimes charges fees, so be sure to check the details of your price to see if you’re actually saving money or not.

Pros and Cons of StudentUniverse

  • Plentiful promo codes are available right on the website
  • Booking fees
  • Many deals require you to be a student between the ages of 16 to 34

Bottom Line: StudentUniverse offers discounted flights to students. Keep an eye out for promo codes to save some extra money.

Did you know that CheapOair has a special section dedicated to student travel? To access the student section of the website, select More in the top menu bar, then select Student Travel .

CheapOair Student section

CheapOair’s sorting and filtering features are good but you’ll want to keep an eye out for extra fees . In addition to a service fee of up to $35 on most flights (business class and first class ticket fees can be as high as $150) you may also run into “post-ticketing fees” that include things like cancellation and change fees.

Hot Tip: If you have to cancel your flight, CheapOair will charge a fee in addition to any airline fee you may be charged. You can avoid this fee if you purchase a “support package.”

Pros and Cons of CheapOair Student Fares

  • Available promo codes include discounts on the cost of a flight or service fees
  • Service fees of up to $35 on most economy tickets and up to $150 on other types of tickets, including multi-city, business, or cities with high fraud rates
  • Cancellation fees will be charged unless you purchase a support package

Hot Tip: For more information, check out our detailed guide to CheapOair .

OneTravel is a fairly typical online travel agency offering flights, hotels, and vacation packages.

Students will be interested in the  student deals section of the website. You can access it by clicking on More > Travel by Theme > Student Travel .

OneTravel

Unfortunately, we didn’t find any extra student discounts or deals when searching for flights through the student section of the website.

While OneTravel has good search capabilities with nice sorting and filtering options, there wasn’t much that made it unique. You also could run into additional fees. OneTravel can charge a service fee of up to $35 on most economy flights, although the fee can be higher on some flights. Plus, you’ll pay additional fees if you need to change or cancel your flight.

To see if you’ll save money in spite of these fees, scroll down to our price comparisons section.

OneTravel also offers its own credit card . Students might be tempted to apply to earn points on their purchases, but there are better options out there .

If you have some established credit , consider the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card , which is a solid option that will work well for most people. If you’re looking for more of a first-time rewards card , consider the Chase Freedom Unlimited ® . This card earns 1.5% cash-back on all purchases and occasionally offers an additional cash-back amount as part of a welcome offer, so you could earn even more cash-back.

Either of these cards will offer benefits above and beyond what the OneTravel card can offer.

Hot Tip: If you are looking for a credit card geared specifically toward students, check out our guide to the best student credit cards .

Pros and Cons of OneTravel

  • No requirements for using the student section of the website
  • Promo codes offered
  • Booking fees ranging from $35 to $150 per ticket
  • Student section doesn’t really offer discounts above and beyond the rest of the website

SmartFares is a little-known online travel agency that claims to have special student fares — but in reality, they appear to be the same as those offered on the non-student section of the website with the exception of an occasional coupon code.

SmartFares

However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t save money. If you’ve got the time and patience to pick up the phone, you can call in to access lower fares .

Additionally, there are lots of extra fees that could get tacked on to your fare that you should keep an eye out for. SmartFares charges for a flexible ticket, for seat selection, and for post-purchase customer service. Plus, there are service fees on most flights of up to $30, although some tickets can have fees as high as $100.

Pros and Cons of SmartFares

  • Free cancellation within 24 hours
  • There are service fees on every ticket ranging from $30 to $100
  • There are additional fees for seat selection fees and post-purchase customer service

Since most students are just looking for cheap airfare, the price is really the most important thing. Let’s take a look at these sites to see how they stack up in terms of cost alone.

We’ve also priced out these itineraries on Kayak , a metasearch engine, to get a sense of how other websites that don’t cater to students might stack up.

Example #1: Roundtrip flight for 1 from New York to London

Example #2: Roundtrip flight for 1 from Chicago to Miami

In both examples, the prices found on Kayak were the lowest. While prices can vary so that won’t always be the case, students may want to look at some non-student-focused online travel agencies and websites to save money on flights .

With so many online travel agencies out there, it can be overwhelming to know where to look for the best prices on student flights. Unfortunately, there is no single right answer for every situation — it’s always smart to shop around for the best prices.

When looking for student discounts, start with websites that offer special student fares and coupon codes. You might be able to find a great deal that will get you traveling — even on a student budget!

If you also need to save some money on accommodations, check out these websites for student discounts on hostels and hotels .

Air Canada Student Flight Pass

Cathay pacific student discount flights, air france student flight discounts, iberia student flight discounts, lufthansa student flight discounts, turkish airlines student flight discounts, emirates student flight discounts, singapore airlines student flight discounts, sas youth tickets, qatar airways student club, student discount flights recapped.

Going off to college or university can be an exciting time of life, with many new experiences to be had and new places to explore.

For those who plan to travel during school — be it for a study abroad program, an alternative spring break, a fun trip with friends or just to head home during school breaks — the cost of flying can be prohibitive. However, a number of airlines offer special deals on student flights to make travel more accessible.

Here is a list of airlines that offer student flight discounts for young people traveling around North America and beyond.

Instead of offering discounts on individual tickets, Air Canada offers a Student Flight Pass for students traveling frequently within the Americas. It also offers an International Student Flight Pass for those planning to travel frequently with more distant destinations.

You can either buy a pass outright or pay it off over nine months (with interest). The pass, coupled with your Aeroplan frequent flyer account number, scores you four to six flight credits (depending on the destination) to use over a specified amount of time, usually 12-15 months. You will have to choose a specific zone in which to fly (like the Western U.S., Alberta or Brazil).

One credit is valid for one one-way flight.

Make sure the pass covers travel to and from your preferred destinations. You will need to plan to fly with Air Canada at least as many times as your pass is good for or the investment won’t be worth it.

You have to be a student in one of the airline’s participating regions (which includes the U.S. and Canada) and traveling out of specific airports to take advantage of Cathay Pacific’s student flight discounts.

Eligible student travelers will:

Get access to exclusive fares to some destinations and select fare categories.

An extra baggage allowance.

Free flight changes for Flex fare classes.

Exclusive rates for Light and Essential classes.

The discount is good for one-way and round-trip flights to specific destinations, plus it can be used to book a seat in economy, economy plus or business class.

Just remember to include your Cathay number on your booking, use the relevant discount code listed online and bring a valid form of student ID when you check in at the airport or you won’t get the discount.

There are limited booking windows for flight discounts for students on Cathay Pacific (for example, in 2024, you must book by April 4 for travel through April 2025 if flying out of the U.S. or Canada).

Before you book, check the website for more details and keep an eye out for future dates.

Air France works a little differently when it comes to cheap flights for students. You’ll still have to prove that you’re a student with a valid student card, proof of enrollment or an admission letter at check-in, but you’ll mostly search for flights on the website as usual — except under “passengers,” make sure to select “student.”

When flight results appear, the student rate, if it’s available, will be in the first column. Prices will vary, but on the upside, the student rate always gets two free checked bags, and you’ll be able to change your flight for no additional fee.

Many eligible trips have to be at least 21 days long; however, there are a few flight options from France to specific destinations that have to be only seven days long.

Unlike with most airlines, the discount offered by Iberia is open to anyone under 30, even if you’re not a student (with additional benefits for those studying abroad).

If that’s you, check to see if Iberia Joven, the discount program for students, offers flights to where you’re headed. If it does, you may be able to score a 10% discount on certain flights and an extra free checked bag if you’re studying abroad.

Just make sure you book on the Iberia Joven site specifically, and know that not all routes are included and the discount is only for the lowest economy fares.

Lufthansa also offers flight discounts for students who book on the airline website. The discounts are valid only for certain flights from select countries, but in addition to fare savings on travel that qualifies, students get more checked baggage allowances and flexible booking.

To take advantage of these fares, you have to be at least 16 and enrolled in some sort of higher education. You'll have to verify your status as a student on the airline website. Then, when you search for fares, just remember to select “Student” to see any applicable discounts.

If you’re a student flying on Turkish Airlines, whether or not you’re a Turkish citizen, you can get up to a 20% discount on domestic flights within Turkey and 15% on international flights.

Students also enjoy a 40-kilogram baggage allowance (about 88 pounds) on flights that charge by weight and two 23-kilogram (about 50-pound) bags on flights that charge by piece. Students get free one-time flight changes for international flights, plus 25% more miles credited to your Miles&Smiles account when you fly before the end of 2024.

To get the discount, verify that you’re a student in the “Discount Types” section on the “My Personal Information” page in your Miles&Smiles loyalty account. Then just select the “Student” passenger option when searching for and booking flights.

Students flying to Emirates’ 250 destinations can score up to a 10% discount on economy and business class fares, plus an extra 10 kilograms (about 22 pounds) or an extra piece of luggage (except when flying to the U.S. or Canada).

Use code STUDENT in the promotional code box to book, then make sure you bring proof that you’re a student to check in.

This special is available only to students ages 16 to 31, and as of this writing, you have to book by March 31, 2024. Act fast and keep an eye on the airline for future deals if you’re a student planning travel to one of Emirates’ destinations.

Students flying on Singapore Airlines can enjoy a 10% discount on Lite, Value or Standard fares in economy class or premium economy class. They also get an extra luggage allowance, which is based on destination, and waived change fees the first time they need to alter their flight.

To enjoy these perks, first join the airline’s KrisFlyer loyalty program . Then you’ll be asked to verify that you’re a student, which you’ll need to do once a year. Then, when it’s time to search for flights, log in and do so on the airline’s dedicated student page. If you are younger than 16, you will not be able to verify your student status online.

SAS offers discounts not just for students, but youth in general, which includes individuals ages 12 to 25. The availability of these discounted fares on any particular flight is limited, and it’s reserved for SAS Go (standard economy) bookings for specific fare classes.

While no student ID is required, travelers will need to prove their age, so make sure to bring along a valid ID. Keep in mind that unaccompanied minors cannot book an SAS Youth Ticket.

There aren’t a lot of extra perks that accompany a Youth Ticket, and SAS doesn’t state how much you can save, but it’s worth searching to find out.

If you’re a student enrolled in higher education ages 18 to 30 and planning travel to any of Qatar Airways’ many destinations, it’s likely worth it to join the airline’s Student Club.

You’ll have to enroll online and share passport and university details, but once you do, you’ll be provided with a unique code to use during booking that will net you a discount.

That code will score you a 10% discount on your first flight, after which you’ll receive a new code for a 15% discount on your second booking and 25% off your third.

Students also get an additional baggage allowance, one complimentary date change for a booked flight and free Super Wi-Fi when you book on the airline website.

You can even fast-track your elite status once you graduate if you fly with Qatar at least once a year. The codes are valid only for Qatar-operated flights.

If you’re a college student, about to be a college student or — in the case of a few airlines — just qualify as a “youth,” you may be able to score some rich discounts and other benefits from a number of airlines.

Just make sure to take note of any special requirements from your preferred airline, sign up for loyalty programs in advance if necessary and enjoy the savings (plus a bit of extra baggage in many cases).

8 Airlines That Give Students and Young Adults Discounts and Exclusive Benefits

Did you know airlines offer student and young adult discounts? Here's what you need to know to save money on your next flight.

When flight prices are high, it’s essential to find any way to cut costs. This is especially true for students, who might be on a limited budget or be less flexible for times and dates they can fly. Luckily, some airlines offer student or youth discounts. Although these discounts generally aren’t substantial, every little bit helps to make travel more accessible. Requirements and eligibility will vary by airline, but you can expect the promotion to be valid on economy tickets and select routes.

“We know travel is a priority for many young adults, so this summer season, which we anticipate will be United’s busiest ever with 5 percent more customers flying the airline this June, July, and August, we’re thrilled to offer United MileagePlus members ages 18 to 23 an exclusive discount on United Economy and Basic Economy seats – making it even easier for them to take flight on their next adventure,” says a spokesperson for United.

Here are some domestic and international airlines that offer discounts for students or young adult travelers. Depending on the airline, these benefits range from 10 percent off your fare to an additional checked bag.

MileagePlus members ages 18 to 23 can receive a 5 percent discount on economy and basic economy seats for bookings made through September 30, 2024. To redeem, log in to the United app, go to the “book flight” section, and select the young traveler discount. Flights will automatically have the promotion applied. Remember that basic economy seats might not include a checked bag, so you will need to travel light to make the promotion worth it. This is the only U.S.-based airline that offers student discounts at the time of writing.

Iberia Joven is a program for both students and young people. If you are under 30, you get a 10 percent discount on flights; if you book for a group of four or more, you get a 15 percent discount. If you are traveling to study abroad, you can take an extra bag and make a free change on your return flight, regardless of your age.

If you are enrolled at an eligible college or university, you can get 10 percent off when you book a Lite, Value, or Standard fare as part of Singapore Airlines student privileges . You will also receive an increased baggage allowance and a fee waiver on your first booking change. Singapore Airlines is unique in offering student discounts on economy, premium economy, and business class fares. All you need to do is verify your student status and start looking for deals.

Qatar Airways has one of the best student programs on this list. Once you enroll in the Student Club program, you will receive a coupon for 10 percent off your booking. After your first journey, you’ll get 15 percent off your next booking and 20 percent off after your second and third trips. Students also receive increased flexibility, extra baggage allowance, and complimentary onboard Wi-Fi. You can extend your privileges to friends and family by selecting them to be student companions. If you fly once a year while enrolled in the program, you will receive a one-time elite status tier upgrade when you graduate. Enrolling in the program is quick and free but can provide substantial savings if you’re a Qatar frequent flier.

Students ages 16 to 31 can receive up to 10 percent off economy and business class fares by using the promo code STUDENT to book a flight from now until March 31, 2025. You’ll also receive increased flexibility on your bookings. For all flights except those to/from Canada and the U.S., you will get 10 kilograms more or an extra piece of luggage. To qualify, you need a valid student ID or school acceptance letter at check-in.

SAS is another airline that offers youth tickets , but the amount you save will depend on the route you take and is difficult to predict. You must be between 12 and 25 years old and have a valid ID to be eligible. Seat availability is limited and is only available in specific booking classes (V class/O class). To redeem, simply search for a youth ticket.

Lufthansa has a looser interpretation of “student.” To qualify for their student fare benefits , you must be 16 or older and either be enrolled in higher education or have proof that you’ve been accepted. You can search for and book student fares once you verify your student status based on your departure country. Destinations will depend on your origin, but if you attend school in the U.S., you can fly to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India. Apart from savings, student fares also offer rebooking and refunds.

Turkish Airlines has a great student program . You can receive up to 20 percent off domestic flights within Turkey and up to 15 percent off international flights. You also get an increased baggage allowance, a free ticket change, and 25 percent bonus miles on flights through the end of 2024. You simply need to create a Miles&Smiles account, verify your student status, and book your ticket.

These programs are free to enroll in, so it only makes sense to take advantage of them if you are a student or eligible young adult who wants to see the world. Even if the savings aren’t substantial, every little bit helps when you’re on a budget.

The Best Airlines for Student Flight Discounts

Who is eligible for a student flight discount, check the airline student discount policy, remember to bring the necessary documents when you fly, take note of the destination, how much does the student discount save, international airlines that offer student flight discounts, north american airlines that offer student flight discounts, tips for getting a student discount.

One of the best things about being a student is that you can get discounts on various things—including flights. Certain airlines offer special fares for students so you can quickly fly to your home for a vacation or even go on a holiday with a few friends. The best thing about these deals is that they come with perks and privileges.

Student discounts are special rates offered by airlines for students. Some airlines provide them, while others don’t.

Depending on the airline you’re booking with, you may be asked to prove that you are a student by presenting documents. In some instances, the airline may ask you for a valid student I.D. or your letter of acceptance from the school where you plan to study.

In other cases, the airline will ask you for your student email address provided by the school. Some airlines only allow student discounts for a specific age range, like those aged 18-22 or 18-32.

How to Get Student Discounts When Flying

Getting a student discount when flying is a simple process.

Various airlines will have different policies in place when getting a student discount. Some airlines allow you to book your student discount via their web page by simply keying in a discount code. Others require you to transact with them via phone or email. When you’re making your purchase, check first what the airline’s processes are so you can get the discount.

Some airlines have a membership club you can be a part of that will give you a lot of discounts, freebies, and perks the more you book with them. Weigh all the options and see which one suits you best. Consider the destinations you often fly to and out of to determine if the membership is worth it.

Some airlines will ask you to provide the necessary documents to prove that you are a student when buying a ticket. Others let you key in a specific code when purchasing through their website and then ask you to bring your student I.D. or admissions letter when you check in at the airport.

Either way, it’s good to have these documents with you all the time just in case they ask for it. Keep a virtual copy in your mobile phone also, so it’s easily accessible.

Some airlines offer discounted rates for specific locations only. Other airlines also have partner schools or programs and only offer their discounts to students from there. Several airlines, however, offer their discounts to any student as long as you have a student I.D. or can prove that you are a student.

Student discounts vary per airline. Some of them will give you up to a 10% discount. Other airlines have an established discount system where you can get 10% off for the first flight, 15% off for the second, and up to 20% off for the next flight.

Here are the international airlines that offer student discounts:

Here are the North American airlines that offer student discounts:

  • Always carry your I.D. and other papers with you. Even if you have already established that you are a student while buying a ticket with a student discount, airport staff might still ask for it when you check in. Make sure you have digital copies on your phone and email also.
  • Look for flights as early as possible. Sometimes, you can snag better deals when you book earlier. If you’re flying somewhere for vacation, don’t wait till it’s almost time for you to fly before buying tickets.
  • Read the fine print. An airline’s terms and conditions give you more details—details that could be very important regarding destinations, flight changes, cancellations, and more. Read these before flying so there are no sudden changes that could cost more.

One of the most sought-after advice for booking flight tickets, browsing through the best places to find cheap flights in incognito mode can help you not pay for surge prices and bag a cheap flight ticket. You should also delete your cookies and cache to avoid airline websites jacking up the prices. When an airline sees that it is in demand, it tends to shoot up the prices, and incognito mode can save you from surge pricing.

2. Search For Flight Tickets During Unusual Hours

When the traffic is low on a website, especially post midnight when everyone is asleep, is it a good idea to look up student discounts on flights or just basic flight tickets, there are higher chances of you finding cheaper deals and flights that you can ultimately take advantage of.

3. Cross-check Similar Websites

While checking for student discounts on flights, it is a good idea to check other websites offering similar deals so you can choose the best deal for yourself. There are chances that you will find better deals on other websites, so you don't want to miss out on the opportunity to save money!

Things To Remember When Booking A Student Flight

While booking a student flight and availing of student discounts on flights, here are a few things that you need to know and take care of -

1. The student discount is generally provided up to a certain amount and percentage discount, depending on the route and the airline provider.  2. The airline provider may provide discounts and offers in the form of extra baggage allowance or seat upgrades, and it may not always be a monetary discount. Always remember to check this with the airline and check which offer makes more sense to you! 3. Remember to carry your student ID while going to the airport, as you will have to present it at the check-in counter to verify your student status and identity.

How To Get A Student Discount On Flights Across North America And Europe

Generally, discounts on flights are available for students and young adults. However, figuring out which airlines offer these discounts and whether you are eligible can be tricky. This article will take a closer look at which North American and European airlines are offering student and young adult discounts and under what terms.

North American carriers

Airlines based in North America are not particularly generous with student or young adult flight discounts. Currently, only two airlines actively promote these types of discounts.

United Airlines

United Airlines offers flight discounts to young adults , providing a 5% discount on United Economy and Basic Economy seats. This discount applies to flights within the US and some international routes. The promotion also covers flights with a "UA" flight number operated by partner airlines like Air Canada, All Nippon Airways (ANA), Austrian, Brussels, Lufthansa, and Swiss.

To get a young adult discount:

  • You have to be aged between 18 and 23
  • You must be a MileagePlus loyalty member
  • Book flights through the United app

According to the airline, this promotion ends on December 31, 2025.

How To Use The United Airlines Young Adult Discount

United Airlines offers students up to 5% off on certain flights and classes.

Air Canada offers students a flight pass. It is a pre-paid package of four or six one-way flight credits in Economy Standard or Flex fare. Student flight passes range from about $1,000 for travel within Halifax to up to $4,000 for flights connecting Europe to Western Canada.

To receive this discount, you must have a valid student ID, and passengers must be Aeroplan loyalty members. It is worth noting that the flight credits can only be used for your own travel.

Some airlines, such as Frontier Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, have offered student discounts briefly in the past.

European carriers

Unlike North American airlines, European carriers are known for being generous with student flight discounts. In fact, at least 11 European-based airlines offer discounts for students or young adults.

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS)

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) offers flight discounts for young travelers aged 12 to 25. While the airline doesn't specify the exact discount, it is possible to find fares with up to an 80% reduction, especially for last-minute short-haul travel.

For instance, a round-trip between Copenhagen (CPH) and Vilnius (VNO) costs just €89 with a SAS Youth ticket, compared to €205 for an adult on the same route.

Lufthansa offers discounted fares for students on both one-way and round-trip flights from selected countries. Along with these special fares, students also receive an increased baggage allowance free of charge.

To qualify for these student fares, you must be at least 16 years old and either currently enrolled in a higher education institution or have proof of acceptance into one. Student fares are offered from the following origins:

Air France is another major European airline offering special prices for those who are studying. According to the carrier, passengers booking student tickets must be between 18 and 29 years old, and full-time students enrolled in an educational institution. Here is how it works:

  • Choose your destination
  • Select your flight (the student rate will appear in the first left column, if available)
  • Book your flight

The student rate allows you to check up to two pieces of baggage, each weighing up to 23 kg, at no extra cost. Additionally, all tickets purchased at the student rate can be changed for free on flights between Metropolitan France and Overseas France. For all other flights, a change fee of €220 ($242) applies.

Student fares are only valid for trips of at least 21 days, except between France and Guadeloupe/Martinique/Runion/French Guyana, where they are valid for trips of at least seven days.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

KLM is another European airline offering cheaper flights for students. Booking student fares with KLM is fairly straightforward. Be sure to choose "Student" as your passenger type. This will ensure that the student fare is automatically applied as you continue booking an intercontinental flight.

Below, find the conditions that will score you a student discount:

  • You have to be between 18 and 29 years old
  • You have to be a full-time student
  • Student fares are only available in economy class
  • Student fares are only valid for trips of at least 21 days
  • Student fares might not be available on all flights and for all destinations

Like Air France and Lufthansa, the Dutch flag carrier allows students to check up to two bags, each weighing up to 23 kg, free of charge.

Aegean Airlines

The airline’s program, GenAIRation Aegean, offers students and young adults between 18 and 25 a 15% discount on all international and domestic flights. The carrier’s GenAIRation program is directly tied to its Miles+Bonus loyalty program, meaning that you will earn miles, which can later be used to redeem free flights and cabin upgrades.

In addition to a 15% discount, the airline’s youth program provides one free 23kg checked bag for two round trips per year, complimentary onboard WiFi, and a 50% off voucher for traveling with your pet.

If you're eligible, here is the registration link .

Notably, passengers can also combine GenAIRation Aegean with any other discounted offers available on Aegean’s website.

Turkish Airlines

The Turkish flag carrier offers 20% on domestic flights, up to 15% on international transit flights, and up to 20% on flights between Turkey and Northern Cyprus. To get a Turkish Airlines student discount:

  • You have to be a Miles&Smiles loyalty member
  • Verify your student passenger type in the Discount Types section in your Miles&Smiles account
  • Login to your Miles&Smiles account after your student status is approved
  • Select the Student passenger option and book your flight

Turkish Airlines Expands In The US With A Limited-Edition Metal Credit Card

The Star Alliance carrier is offering the first 5,000 applicants a special metal edition of its new US co-branded credit card.

Iberia runs a program called Iberia Joven, which provides flight discounts for young people and students. If you're under 30 years old or studying abroad, you can access these exclusive deals.

Passengers under 30 years old can receive a special rate with a 10% discount. If they book for themselves and at least four other passengers, they can get a 15% discount. Meanwhile, active students can bring an extra bag and make one free change for their return flight. Additionally, the special flight price will be valid throughout the year.

The European low-cost giant has partnered with the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) to offer students exclusive benefits.

Through this partnership, Erasmus students can access an ESN booking platform, where they can get a 10% discount on flights booked through the Ryanair website and receive one free checked bag on four one-way flights or two round trips.

If you're an Erasmus student, start by registering at ESNcard.org. After that, log in or sign up on MyRyanair to access the Erasmus tab in your dashboard.

The ESN discount applies to travel during the academic year, from September 1 to June 15.

ITA Airways

ITA Airways offers special fares for young adults aged 12 to 25 on the date of boarding. These discounted fares are available on all flights operated by the airline to destinations in Italy, Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

While the airline does not disclose the exact percentage of the discount, it does mention that the fares are specially reduced for this age group.

The fare is not valid for itineraries subject to Territorial Continuity rates: from Rome and Milan to Cagliari (and vice versa)

Norwegian Air

Travelers aged between 12 and 25 can get a special discount on flights with Norwegian Air . To get the special fare, passengers must use the campaign code UNDER26 when booking their flight.

Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic offers a one-time student discount available until December 31, 2024. This offer applies to flights departing from Bangalore, Delhi, or Mumbai to London or any of Virgin Atlantic's US destinations.

Students can enjoy generous baggage allowances: 87kg in Upper Class (2 x 32kg bags + 1 x 23kg bag) and 69kg in Premium, Economy Classic, and Economy Delight (3 x 23kg bags).

The Best Student Travel Discounts and Where to Find Them

The words “broke” and “college student” practically go hand-in-hand. And if you’re a broke college student studying abroad (like me), your money challenges are likely to be even worse. How to cope? By taking advantage of the many discounts available to students both at home and overseas. Here are best student-only deals and student travel discounts on transportation, lodging, attractions, and getaways.

You can’t get anywhere without proper transportation, and flights can cost you an arm and a leg if you purchase them directly from the airlines or major OTAs (online travel agencies). Thankfully, there are websites like STA and Student Universe that offer discounted airfare just for students. Another great site to check out is Travel Cuts . This Canadian company helps you save on flights all over the world.

Still haven’t found what you’re looking for? Two more great discounted flight websites are OneTravel and Student Flights , which both offer deals and discounts on domestic and international travel.

Maybe you don’t need to fly to get where you’re going. Your next best method of transportation would be the train. Especially in Europe, trains are one of the best ways to go from country to country in a quick and easy way. As a student, you can get up to 35 percent off train travel with Eurail. Another option in Europe is Rail Europe , which offers discounted rates on passes and tickets for select trains to students between the ages of 12 and 25.

If you’re traveling in the United States, Amtrak offers a Student Advantage Card that can save you up 50 percent on clothes, food, entertainment, books, and, of course, rail fare.

RELATED: Getting the Most Out of a Rail Journey

Automobiles

Two of the best bus travel companies offering deals for students are Megabus and Eurolines , both of which provide coach-class transportation for a fraction of the cost of other bus lines.

Perhaps you’re planning to hit as many countries as you can during the course of your stay abroad? Then Busabout is the purchase for you. Busabout is a hop-on hop-off sightseeing tour bus that lets you ride as many times as you want for a one-time fee.

If you’d prefer to handle the traveling yourself, you should probably look into renting a car ( even if you’re under the age of 25 ). Just make sure you have the proper license to drive. You could also join a carpool through websites like Karzoo and Ride Finder .

Instead of paying insane amounts of money to stay in a hotel, why not spend a little less and stay at a hostel? Websites like Hostel World and Hostelling International list all of the best hostels all around the world and even offer memberships that would allow you to pay a little now to save a lot on each hostel later on.

If you’re looking for an even cheaper experience, sleep on someone’s couch for the night with the Couchsurfing.com . Of course, this section on lodging wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Airbnb . Stay in a shared or private room, or book the entire place for yourself, for usually less than what you would spend at a hotel.

Attractions

At Viator.com , you can find more than 100 sightseeing cards and passes that will save you a few dollars per each activity that the card holds. We Love Citycards has many of the same offers for cards in 21 different countries. Just feel like exploring the U.S? CityPass has discount cards for all of the major cities across the country.

Some tour companies offer weekend trips specifically geared toward students. Contiki offers hundreds of trips for anyone ages 18-35. WSA has plenty of guided weekend trips to choose from at far less than you’d pay with a standard travel agency.

If you want to travel with a group of other students, EF College Break has a handful of educational tours with plenty of free time to allow you to do your own thing, too.

Students Discount Cards

If you’re looking for discounts on everything from clothes to food to entertainment, consider purchasing a student discount card. Some of the top providers are International Student Identity Card (ISIC) , National Union of Students (NUS) Extra , International Student (ISE) , and International Youth Travel Card (IYTC) . Each of these cards costs less than $25 to purchase and offers discounts and benefits at more than 125,000 locations.

Openly discussing how you split your finances with your partner feels pretty taboo - even among friends.

As a consequence, it can be difficult to know how to approach these conversations with our partner or what is largely considered fair - especially if there's a big imbalance salary-wise.

Research by Hargreaves Lansdown suggests in an average household with a couple, three-quarters of the income is earned by one person.

Even when there is a large disparity, some couples will want to pay the same amount on bills as they want to contribute equally.

But for others, one partner can feel resentful if they are spending all of their money on bills while the other has much more to spend and is living a different lifestyle as a result.

At what stage of the relationship can you talk about money?

"We've kind of formally agreed there is some point in a relationship you start talking about kids - there is no generally agreed time that we start talking about money," says Sarah Coles, head of personal finance at Hargreaves Lansdown.

Some couples may never get around to mentioning it, leading to "lopsided finances".

Ms Coles says if you want to keep on top of finances with your partner, you could set a specific date in the year that you go through it all.

"If it's in the diary and it's not emotional and it's not personal then you can properly go through it," she says.

"It's not a question of 'you need to pull more weight'.  It's purely just this is what we've agreed, this is the maths and this is how we need to do that."

While many people start talking about finances around Christmas, Ms Coles suggests this can be a "trying time" for couples so February might be a "less emotional time to sit down".

How do you have the conversation if you feel the current arrangement is unfair?

Relationship counsellor at Relate , Peter Saddington, says that setting out the balance as "unfair" shouldn't be your starting point.

You need to be honest about your position, he says, but your conversation should be negotiating as a couple what works for both of you.

Before you have to jump into the conversation, think about:

  • Letting your partner know in advance rather than springing it on them;
  • Making sure you and your partner haven't drunk alcohol before having the conversation, as this can make it easy for it to spiral;
  • Having all the facts to hand, so you know exactly how much you are spending;
  • Using 'I' statements rather than 'you'. For example, you could say to your partner: "I'm really worried about my finances and I would like to sit down and talk about how we manage it. Can we plan a time when we can sit down and do it?"

Mr Saddington says if your partner is not willing to help, you should look at the reasons or question if there are other things in the relationship that need sorting out.

If you're having repeated arguments about money, he says you might have opposite communication styles causing you to "keep headbutting".

Another reason could be there is a "big resentment" lurking in the background - and it may be that you need a third party such as a counsellor, therapist or mediator to help resolve it.

Mr Saddington says there needs to be a "safe space" to have these conversations, and that a third party can help untangle resentments from what is happening now.

He also suggests considering both of your attitudes to money, which he says can be formed by your early life and your family.

"If you grew up in a family where there wasn't any money, or it wasn't talked about, or it was pushed that you save instead of spend, and the other person had the opposite, you can see where those conversations go horribly wrong.

"Understanding what influences each of you when it comes to money is important to do before you have significant conversations about it."

What are the different ways you can split your finances?

There's no one-size-fits-all approach, but there are several ways you can do it - with Money blog readers getting in touch to let us know their approach...

1. Separate personal accounts - both pay the same amount into a joint account regardless of income

Paul Fuller, 40, earns approximately £40,000 a year while his wife earns about £70,000.

They each have separate accounts, including savings accounts, but they pay the same amount (£900) each a month into a joint account to pay for their bills.

Paul says this pays for the things they both benefit from or have a responsibility for, but when it comes to other spending his wife should be able to spend as she likes.

"It's not for me to turn around to my wife and expect her to justify why she thinks it's appropriate to spend £150 in a hairdresser. She works her backside off and she has a very stressful job," he says.

However, their arrangement is still flexible. Their mortgage is going up by £350 a month soon, so his wife has agreed to pay £200 of that.

And if his wife wants a takeaway but he can't afford to pay for it, she'll say it's on her.

"Where a lot of people go wrong is being unable to have those conversations," says Paul.

2. Separate personal accounts - whoever earns the most puts more into a joint account

This is a more formal arrangement than the hybrid approach Paul and his wife use, and many Money blog readers seem to do this in one form or another judging by our inbox.

There's no right or wrong way to do the maths - you could both put in the same percentage of your individual salaries, or come up with a figure you think is fair, or ensure you're both left with the same amount of spending money after each payday.

3. Everything is shared

Gordon Hurd and his wife Brenda live by their spreadsheet.

Brenda earns about £800 more a month as she is working full-time while Gordon is freelance. Previously Gordon had been the breadwinner - so it's a big turnaround.

They each have separate accounts with different banks, but they can both access the two accounts.

How much is left in each account - and their incomings and outgoings - is all detailed in the spreadsheet, which is managed weekly.

Whenever they need to buy something, they can see how much is left in each account and pay from either one.

Gordon says this means "everyone knows how much is available" and "each person's money belongs to the other".

"We have never in the last decade had a single disagreement about money and that is because of this strategy," he says.

Money blog reader Shredder79 got in touch to say he takes a similar approach.

"I earn £50k and my wife earns just under £150k. We have one joint bank account that our wages go into and all our outgoings come out of. Some friends can't get their head around that but it's normal for us."

Another reader, Curtis, also puts his wages into a joint account with his wife.

"After all, when you have a family (three kids) it shouldn't matter who earns more or less!" he says.

Reader Alec goes further and says he questions "the authenticity of any long-term relationship or the certainly of a marriage if a couple does not completely share a bank account for all earnings and all outgoings".

"As for earning significantly more than the other, so what? If you are one couple or long-term partnership you are one team and you simply communicate and share everything," he says.

"Personally I couldn't imagine doing it any other way and I do instinctively wonder what issues or insecurities, whether it be in trust or something else, sit beneath the need to feel like you need to keep your finances separate from one another, especially if you are a married couple."

A reader going by the name lljdc agrees, saying: "I earn half of what my husband does because I work part-time. Neither of us has a solo account. We have one joint account and everything goes into this and we just spend it however we like. All bills come out of this too. Sometimes I spend more, sometimes he spends more."

4. Separate accounts - but the higher earner pays their partner an 'allowance'

If one partner is earning much more than the other, or one partner isn't earning for whatever reason, they could keep separate accounts and have the higher earner pay their partner an allowance.

This would see them transfer an agreed amount each week or month to their partner's account.

Let us know how you and your partner talk about and split finances in the comments box - we'll feature some of the best next week

By Jimmy Rice, Money blog editor

The centre-point of a significant week in the economy was inflation data, released first thing on Wednesday, that showed price rises accelerated in July to 2.2%.

Economists attributed part of the rise to energy prices - which have fallen this year, but at a much slower rate than they did last year.

As our business correspondent Paul Kelso pointed out, it felt like the kind of mild fluctuation we can probably expect month to month now that sky high price hikes are behind us, though analysts do expect inflation to tick up further through the remainder of the year...

Underneath the bonnet, service inflation, taking in restaurants and hotels, dropped from 5.7% to 5.2%.

This is important because a large part of this is wages - and they've been a concern for the Bank of England as they plot a route for interest rates.

On Tuesday we learned average weekly earnings had also fallen - from 5.7% to 5.4% in the latest statistics.

High wages can be inflationary (1/ people have more to spend, 2/ employers might raise prices to cover staff costs), so any easing will only aid the case for a less restrictive monetary policy. Or, to put it in words most people use, the case for interest rate cuts.

Markets think there'll be two more cuts this year - nothing has changed there.

Away from the economy, official data also illustrated the pain being felt by renters across the UK.

The ONS said:

  • Average UK private rents increased by 8.6% in the 12 months to July 2024, unchanged from in the 12 months to June 2024;
  • Average rents increased to £1,319 (8.6%) in England, £748 (7.9%) in Wales, and £965 (8.2%) in Scotland;
  • In Northern Ireland, average rents increased by 10% in the 12 months to May 2024;
  • In England, rents inflation was highest in London (9.7%) and lowest in the North East (6.1%).

Yesterday, we found the UK economy grew 0.6% over three months to the end of June.

That growth rate was the second highest among the G7 group of industrialised nations - only the United States performed better with 0.7%, though Japan and Germany have yet to released their latest data.

Interestingly, there was no growth at all in June, the Office for National Statistics said, as businesses delayed purchases until after the general election.

"In a range of industries across the economy, businesses stated that customers were delaying placing orders until the outcome of the election was known," the ONS said.

Finally, a shout for this analysis from business presenter Ian King examining what's gone wrong at Asda. It's been one of our most read articles this week and is well worth five minutes of your Friday commute or weekend...

We're signing out of regular updates now until Monday - but do check out our weekend read from 8am on Saturday. This week we're examining how couples who earn different amounts split their finances.

Each week we feature comments from Money blog readers on the story or stories that elicited most correspondence.

Our weekend probe into the myriad reasons for pub closures in the UK prompted hundreds of comments.

Landlords and campaigners, researchers and residents revealed to Sky News the "thousand cuts" killing Britain's boozers - and what it takes to survive the assault.

Here was your take on the subject...

I've been a publican for 19 years. This article is bang on! It's like you've overheard my conversations with my customers - COVID, cost of living, wages - the traditional British boozer going out of fashion. (My place: no food, no small children). Hey Jood
I own a small craft ale bar or micropub as some say. The current climate is sickening for the whole hospitality sector. This summer has been ridiculously quiet compared to previous ones. Micropubs were on the rise pre-COVID, but not now even we're struggling to survive… Lauren
I am an ex-landlord. It's ridiculous you can buy 10 cans for £10 or one pint for £5 now. It's not rocket science, it's a no-brainer: reverse the situation. Make supermarket beer more expensive than pub beer, then people will start to go out and mix again rather than getting drunk at home. Ivanlordpeers
Bought four pints of my regular drink at a supermarket for less than one pint in our local pub. It's becoming a luxury to go to a pub these days. Torquay David
Traditional pubs are being taken over by conglomerates who don't sell traditional beer, only very expensive lager, usually foreign, and other similar gassy drinks. How can they be called traditional pubs? Bronzestraw
The main reason for pubs closing is twofold! 1: The out-of-reach rents that the big groups charge landlords. 2: Landlords are told what stock they can hold and restrict where they can purchase it from. Strange, but most pubs belonged to the same groups! A pub-goer
Less pubs are managed now, pub companies are changing them to managed partnerships, putting the pressure onto inexperienced young ex-managers. Locals complain that their local pub has gone. but they don't use them enough. Can government regulate rents and beer prices for business owners? John Darkins
I was a brewery tenant in Scotland for many years and sequestrated because of the constant grabbing at my money by greedy brewers who wanted more and more. I made my pub very successful and was penalised by the brewery. James MacQuarrie
The only reason pubs are closing is locals only use them on Boxing Day, New Year's Eve, and one Sunday a year. Plus breweries don't need pubs, they sell enough through supermarkets! Use them or lose them. Peter Smith
The closing of pubs is a terrible shame. I still go to my local and have great memories of getting drunk in many in my hometown. They are important places in society. As someone once said: "No good story ever started with a salad." Kev K
It's the taxman killing pubs. £1 of every £3 sold. Utter disgrace. Stef
I go with my girlfriend, Prue, every day to my local. It's a shame what's happening to prices. It used to be full of people and joy but now it's a ghost town in the pub since prices are too high now. I wish we could turn back time and find out what went wrong. Niall Benson
Minimum wage is around £11 and the tax threshold is £12,600 per year. How can you possibly afford a night in a pub out when a pint costs between £3 and £8 a pint on those wages? Allan7777blue
Unfortunately, the very people who have kept these establishments going over the years (the working man) have been priced out, and they're paying the price. Dandexter
The pubs are too expensive for people to go out regularly as we once did a decade or so ago. People's priorities are on survival, not recreation. Until the living wage increases beyond an inflation that wages haven't risen above in years, then we will see shops, pubs, etc. close JD
Who wants to spend hard-earned money going into a pub that's nearly always empty. It takes away one of the main attractions - socialising. Michael

Monzo has been named the best bank in the UK for customer satisfaction, according to a major survey.

More than 17,000 personal current account customers rated their bank on the quality of its services and how likely they would be to recommend to friends or family.

Digital banks made up the top three, with Monzo coming out on top, followed by Starling Bank and then Chase.

Some 80% of Monzo customers said they would recommend the bank.

The digital banking app said topping the tables "time and time again" was not something it would "ever take for granted".

Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) was bottom of the ranking for another year.

The banks with the best services in branches were Nationwide, Lloyds Bank and Metro Bank.

Gail's bakery chain has come under fire for repurposing unsold pastries into croissants and selling them for almost £4 the next day.

The retailer lists the "twice baked" chocolate almond croissants as part of its "Waste Not" range, which means it is made using leftover croissants that are then "topped with almond frangipane and flaked almonds".

The scheme has been hit with criticism online, with many pointing out the £3.90 price tag is 95p more than the original croissant.

One X user said: "The audacity of bragging about it being part of their 'Waste Not' range like we should be grateful to them and proud of ourselves for contributing to reducing food waste when they could just sell it for less money – not one pound more than yesterday.

"Unsure whether to be impressed or horrified that someone has come up with a concept to capitalise on yellow sticker goods to make more profit."

It should be added, however, that the practice was not invented by Gail's - and almond croissants were originally created by French boulangeries to reuse day-old croissants and stop them going stale.

When factoring in the extra ingredients (almond frangipane and flaked almonds) and baking time, the bakery chain would likely defend the increased price by pointing to the additional costs incurred.

It comes as locals in a trendy London neighbourhood signed a petition against a Gail's bakery setting up shop in their area.

After (unconfirmed) rumours began circulating that the chain was looking to open a site in Walthamstow village, more than 600 have signed a petition opposing the plans.

The petition says the village "faces a threat to its uniqueness" should Gail's move into the area (see yesterday's 11.54am post for more).

Gail's has been contacted for comment.

British retailers saw a rise in sales last month after a boost from Euro 2024 and summer discounting, according to official figures.

High street retailers said sales of football shirts, electronics such as TVs, and alcoholic drinks were all stronger amid the Three Lions' journey to the final.

Total retail sales volumes rose by 0.5% in July, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. It was, however, slightly below predictions, with economists forecasting a 0.7% increase.

It followed a 0.9% slump in volumes in June as retail firms blamed uncertainty ahead of the general election and poor weather.

ONS director of economic statistics, Liz McKeown, said: "Retail sales grew in July led by increases in department stores and sports equipment shops, with both the Euros and discounting across many stores boosting sales.

"These increases were offset by a poor month for clothing and furniture shops, and falling fuel sales, despite prices at the pump falling."

The data showed that non-food stores saw a 1.4% rise, driven by a strong performance from department stores, where sales grew by 4% for the month as summer sales helped to stoke demand.

However, clothing and footwear shops saw a 0.6% dip, whilst homeware retailers also saw volumes fall 0.6%. Food stores, meanwhile, saw sales remain flat for the month.

There are fears that the £2-cap on single bus fares could be scrapped after the government declined to say whether the policy would continue past December.

Bus companies said it was vital the cost of using their services is kept low for young people to "enhance their access to education and jobs".

Alison Edwards, director of policy and external relations at industry body the Confederation of Passenger Transport, said: "Bus operators are working closely with the government so that together we can find a way to avoid a cliff edge return to commercial fares.

"Analysis has shown that supporting fares, which can be done in a range of different ways, is great value for money and can support many other government objectives.

"For example, keeping fares low for young people would enhance their access to education and jobs, while also encouraging them to develop sustainable travel habits to last a lifetime."

Transport Secretary Louise Haigh said in a recent interview with the PA news agency that her officials were "looking at various options" in relation to the cap, including whether they could "target it better".

It's been a busy week on the economic front.

There was no major shift in the overall outlook - since Monday we've had it confirmed that the UK economy has lower inflation and more growth than the last two years, while wages have grown faster than the overall pace of price rises.

On the back of all that news the pound is at the highest rate since early this month against the dollar, worth $1.2882, and the highest since July when it comes to buying euro with one pound equal to €1.1733.

Signs of a recovery from the global market sell-off of Monday last week can be seen in the share prices of companies listed on the London Stock Exchange.

Share prices have grown among the most valuable companies on the stock exchange, those that comprise the Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE) 100 list of most valuable companies.

Today though, this benchmark UK index fell 0.19% but finishes the week higher than the start.

Also finishing the week higher than the start are the more UK-based companies of the FTSE 250 (the 101st to the 250th most valuable firms on the London Stock Exchange).

On Friday morning that index was up 0.08%.

With tensions in the Middle East and Eastern Europe high as Iran mulled a retaliatory strike on Israel and Ukraine made incursions into Russian territory, there had been concern about energy price spikes.

But the benchmark oil price has remained steady at $80.13 dollars for a barrel of Brent crude oil.

Gas prices have remained below the Monday high of 100 pence a therm (the measurement for heat) and now are 94.50 pence a therm.

A Cabinet Office minister has said it is "unfair" to suggest other public sector workers will be queuing up for a pay rise after the government's offer of a 15% increase for train drivers and junior doctors.

"I think that's an unfair characterisation as well," paymaster general Nick Thomas-Symonds told Times Radio.

"I think what is absolutely crucial here is we are a Government again that is sticking to the promises we made in opposition.

"We promised we would sit down and find solutions, and people expressed scepticism about that, but actually that is precisely what we have done in Government."

Last month, the government and the British Medical Association struck an improved pay deal for junior doctors in England worth 22% on average over two years.

Meanwhile, train drivers will vote on a new pay deal following talks between representatives of drivers' union ASLEF and the Department for Transport.

The new offer is for a 5% backdated pay rise for 2022/23, a 4.75% rise for 23/24, and 4.5% increase for 24/25.

The Dartford Crossing is the highest-earning toll road in the UK, new data shows.

The Kent to Essex route raked in £215.9m in the last year - 2,159 times more than the Whitney toll bridge in Hereford.

The crossing, which was supposed to stop charging customers in 2003, costs between £2 and £6 to use (depending on the vehicle you're driving) between 10am and 6pm every day.

Car finance company Moneybarn found it earned just over £209m in 2022.

It topped the chart of 13 toll roads in the country, making over £100m more than the second highest-earning road in 2023 - the M6 Toll in the West Midlands.

In third place was the Mersey Gateway Bridge between Halton and Cheshire, which made £48.9m.

You can see how the other toll roads fared below...
