Located at the foot of Dua Saudara Mountain, the Tangkoko Nature Reserve is comprised of rolling hills and valleys with a variety of hardwood trees and unusual plant life. The animal life is also quite varied, and one can often view Tarsius tarsier (one of the smallest known primates), black tailless monkeys, snakes, spiders and kuskus (marsupials). Tangkoko Batuangus Reserve offers a suitable protective environment to help prevent these animals from becoming extinct.

Tangkoko Day Tour

Departing Safari Tours office, we proceed 2 hours to the 8700-hectare National Park where we will hike in search of the Black Crested Macaque (Black Monkey indigenous to North Sulawesi) as well as the famous Tarsius Tarsier. Cameras, long pants and a flashlight are the order of the day. Exciting trip for nature lovers, trekkers, and anyone who likes the outdoors.

Tangkoko Overnight Tour (2 Day/1 Night)

This is an exciting overnight trip for nature lovers, trekkers, and anyone who likes the outdoors.

DAY 01 (12 noon) :

Transfer by Safari Tours bus or AC 4 pax vehicle to Nature Reserve. The 2-hour drive to the 9000-hectare National Park is quite scenic as we pass through small villages. Upon arrival, immediately check in to Tangkoko Hill Cottage & Resto or equivalent. You will then be guided by local forest rangers (and Safari staff) in search of the Black Crested Macaque (Black Monkey indigenous to North Sulawesi), hornbills, and couscous as well as other fauna specific to the reserve. Depending on what time it gets dark, we will head into the denser part of the jungle as the sun is setting, where you will (most likely) be able to get photographs of the Tarsius Tarsier (one of the smallest known primates). After it is completely dark and the Tarsier have departed for their nightly foraging, we head back to the “basic” comfort homestay for a traditional dinner. Overnight.

Rising early, you will again hike into the forest with local rangers where you will have the best opportunity to view more birds and certainly the Black Crested Macaque as these monkeys are earlier risers and are searching out food along the coastline at Tangkoko. After several hours it’s back to the homestay for a traditional breakfast and prepare to go back to Manado. Arrive in Manado between 9 -11 AM.

After several hours it’s back to the homestay for full breakfast and a 1 or 2 hour rest. After lunch we will head back the jungle for more opportunities to see the Tarsius Tarsier (one of the smallest known primates) and other wildlife of the nature reserve. After it is completely dark and the Tarsier have departed for their nightly foraging, we head back to the homestay for dinner. Overnight at homestay.

Also included is a mangrove trip by traditional fisherman’s boat, for more birding or sightseeing opportunities (tide/weather dependent).

DAY 03 (05.00 am):

Rising early, another opportunity (if you choose) to hike into the forest with local ranger and Safari guide. We return to the homestay for full breakfast and preparing to check out. 10.00 Latest time leaving the homestay to go back to Manado or to the airport to catch clients’ next destination flight.

Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue and Education Centre

Only one hour away from Tangkoko Nature Reserve (on the way) is Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue and Education Centre ( www.tasikoki.org ). Here you can observe many unique species from Indonesia, as well as several endemic to Sulawesi. All animals have been rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. When taking a tour of the centre (1.5 hours) you will learn about conservation of wildlife and nature as well as the rampant wildlife trade. After visiting the animals you can enjoy a vegetarian meal (with fish) together with the staff as well as the many volunteers from all over the world.

Tangkoko National Park tour to see a bunch of endemic species that only exist in Sulawesi. There are literally hundreds of Indonesian animal species living in the park. Possibilities to see Sulawesi crested black macaques, rare birds, lizards, snakes, cicadas, and tarsiers. Moreover, you can also see Cuscus bears and huge black tarantulas here. 

This nature reserve covers an area of 8,700 hectares and is famous for hundreds of unique animal species living here.  It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to drive from Manado to Batu Putih Village through a winding jungle road. However, driving to Tangkoko gives you some incredibly scenic views of jungles and volcanoes, making the 2-hour drive seem to go by in just a few minutes.

If you arrive on an afternoon flight you have to skip the Manado Highland Tour and go directly to Tangkoko Nature Reserve from the airport.

Wildlife at Tangkoko National Park

Tangkoko National Park is home to a variety of primates, including the black crested macaque, tarsier, and spectral tarsier. The Tarsius spectrum is the smallest monkey in the world that is endemic to Sulawesi and also the most endangered species.  The opportunity to meet the Tarsius is in the afternoon (as they appear after 5.30 PM) or early in the morning. Also, You can find Cuscus bears and lots of birds here. If you are an insect lover you can continue to explore the insects after dinner.

Tangkoko Bird Watching

The park is home to over 100 species of birds, including the endemic Sulawesi hornbill, knobbed hornbill, and maleo bird. The best time to visit Tangkoko National Park is during the dry season, from April to October The weather during this time is pleasant and the birds are more active during this time. Visitors can take guided tours through the park, which can last anywhere from a few hours to a full day. Our knowledgeable guides will lead you through the forest, pointing out the different bird species.

One of the must-see birds in Tangkoko National Park is the Sulawesi hornbill, a large bird with a curved beak and colorful plumage. This bird is an impressive sight as it flies through the forest canopy. In addition, maleo birds are another fascinating species found in Tangkoko National Park. This bird lays its eggs in the sand, which are then incubated by the heat of the sun. Visitors may be lucky enough to witness the maleo bird laying its eggs or see the hatching of the eggs.

For sure, Tangkoko National Park is a must-visit destination for any birdwatcher or nature enthusiast. Of course, you can combine it with birding at Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park.

• at 6.00 am, before breakfast, start to explore the endemic species of North Sulawesi at the Tangkoko Nature Reserve. Search for the Black Crested Macaque (Black Monkey indigenous to North Sulawesi), the Tarsier Spectrum (the world’s smallest primate), Cuscus bear, and lots of birds.

Tangkoko is one of the most impressive and accessible nature reserves in Indonesia, and includes some coastline and coral gardens off-shore. About 30km from Bitung, the 8,800 hectares are home to black macaques, cuscus and tarsier; maleo birds and endemic red knobbed hornbills, among other fauna; and rare types of rainforest flora.

Tangkoko is an excellent spot for an adventure trip in North Sulawesi. Lot’s of place to go, such as The National Park, DuaSaudara Mountain, and a white sandy beach with a great coral reefs for relaxing after enjoying your amazing and unforgettable Adventure Trip.

More than 150 of Sulawesi’s 379 bird species have been recorded in Tangkoko, including 47 sulawesi endemic. You should catch up with most of the park’s specialities in a 4 or 5 day visit. In addition to endemic kingfishers and hornbills, Tangkoko boasts six endemic parrots, Green and Sulawesi Hanging-parrots, Red spotted and Golden-mantled racquettail, Blue-backed parrot and ornate loriket. The cautious birder may also obserbe colorful hooded and Blue-winged pitas and Chestnut backed thrushes in the open forest understorey. Although Tangkoko was once famous for Kingfisher, their numbers have plummeted and better viewing is found elsewhere. Other highlights include friendly groups of Sulawesi macaques, shadowed by mixed flocks of yellow billed malkhoha, hair creasted drongos and spot-tailed goshawks, watching tarsiers (one of the wordl’s smallest primates)emerge from a daytime roots in a fig tree is a highlight at the end of any day. The Tangkoko – Duasudara Nature Reserve sits like a thumbnail on the tip of the peninsula. This 8,800-ha reserve is one of the most beautiful and accessible rain forests in Indonesia and despite its modest size, offers opportunities for treks from beach forest through gently sloping low-land forest and on up to cloud forests that cling to the edges of volcanic calderas. The reserve’s 3 volcanic peaks are the 1,109-m Mt Tangkoko, the ash cone of batuangus (450 m), which resulted from an eruption in 1839, and the 1,351-m twin peaks of Dua Sudara is almost bare of vegetation and has a new lava flow that extends to the sea, where a collapsed lava tunnel has formed a 400-m long cove with coral reefs and the only mangrove habitat in the reserve. the north coast is a series of crescent-shaped, sandy bays, separated by rocky headlands.

Beside famous among the bird species, Tangkoko Nature Reserve also have an Icon which is Tarsiers Spectrum, a 5cm size of monkey with a big eye and long tail. Only leave the nest during dark time and return before sunlight appear. The Black Crested Macaque (Black Monkey indigenous to North Sulawesi), cuscus and the Red-Knobbed Hornbills are several Icons among the Tangkoko Nature Reserve.

The crested black macaques (macaca nigra), endemic to Sulawesi, usually come in large social groups, and can be seen playing, fighting or grooming themselves. While the cuscus, a pouched animal can be seen among the trees when one is particularly lucky.

Tarsiers are the smallest primates in the world – only about a fist size – who make Tangkoko their last refuge and are found only in Sulawesi. Tarsiers (tarsius spectrum) look particularly cute because of their big saucer eyes. Locals know them as: tangkasi. Since these are nocturnal animals they can be observed only at night.

Day 03: Tangkoko Tour (B,L,D) Arise early morning, time for other endemic species; Dwarf Kingfisher, Ochre-bellied Boobook, Pied Cuckoo-shrike, Sulawesi Triller, White-bellied Imperial Pigeon, Silver-tipped Imperial Pigeon, Sulawesi Cicadabird, Serpent Eagle and Crested Myna. In the afternoon, birding continues by boat on Lembeh Strait looking for Sulawesi Masked Owl roosting on a cliff, Blue-rock Thrush, and with luck, Great-billed Kingfisher in the mangrove forest. Tangkoko Nature Reserve is a flora and fauna conservation area on Mount Tangkoko in the district of Bitung in the province of North Sulawesi, about one hour’s drive from Manado.  The reserve is particularly attractive for its unique wildlife that can be observed roaming free in the forest.

The Tangkoko Reserve  covers a total area of 3,196 hectares ,  where the Batuangus Nature Reserve has  635 hectares (located between the Tangkoko Nature Reserve and Pinangunian village), while the Duasaudara Nature Reserve covers  4,299 hectares (which includes Mount Duasaudara and its surrounding areas)

The tarsiers, the black macaque monkeys, maleo birds, cuscus and the hornbills make this their habitat.

TANGKOKO WILDLIFE TOUR (Bitung) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

Tangkoko Tour

Go in search of tarsiers at tangkoko nature reserve.

Around 80 kilometres from Manado in the very northern part of Sulawesi is Tangkoko Nature Reserve. The reserve is home to some of the world’s most incredible and rarest animals, so for nature lovers or those looking for a real adventure a tour to Tangkoko is a must!

If you choose to take this tour during your stay at Gangga Island Resort, the boat will leave Gangga jetty at around 11.30am and arrives 20 minutes later at Serei jetty where you will be met by an air conditioned car. On the way you’ll pass through small villages and stop for lunch at a local restaurant. If you’d rather have lunch at the resort the boat can depart from Gangga jetty at 12.30pm. It takes around 2 hours to get to Tangkoko from Serei.

You are likely to see all kinds of primates, birds, insects and incredible flora as well. Most people come to Tangkoko with the hope of seeing tarsiers, one of the smallest known primates, but to do this you must follow the rules of the park and be informed about the best way to stay safe while in the area.

The monkeys in the park are one of its main attractions, but be sure you know how to act while you’re around them. Don’t ever approach them, instead let them come to you. If you stoop down and avoid direct eye contact they will most likely be less inhibited around you. You’ll also be told to never feed the monkeys, and this is really important. They might seem cuddly and friendly, but they are wild animals that have been known to bite. Monkey bites can at worst carry serious diseases and at best can become badly infected.

Tarsiers are often seen as the stars of the park and you may have the opportunity to go into the park at night to see these fantastic creatures. Tarsiers are very small, rarely more than 1kg in weight. They have huge eyes and can turn their heads 180 degrees like an owl, perfect for hunting at night. They also have pad like suction cups on the end of their digits to help them cling to the plants and trees they climb to find food.

Late in the afternoon you will have the chance to head into the denser part of the jungle as the sun is setting to photograph tarsiers in their natural environment. By 5.30 or 6pm it is completely dark in the jungle and the tarsiers will be heading out to forage for the night. This means it’s time to head back to Serei pier for the boat back to Gangga. You can expect to arrive back around 8.30pm.

Take a Walk on the Wild Side: Tangkoko Nature Reserve

The fertile, lush forest of Tangkoko is located at the foot of the Dua Saudara Mountain and is home to Sulawesi’s most impressive wildlife and bird species. Tangkoko is one of the oldest nature reserves in Indonesia and it covers almost 9000 hectares of rainforest. The rolling hills and valleys with their dense carpet of tropical trees and exotic fauna are where you’ll find the iconic tarsier monkeys and large troops of the endemic Sulawesi crested black macaque. Observing these primates while they roam freely, play,  groom and nurse their young in their natural environment is a very special experience for any nature enthusiast.

Primates are not the only inhabitants of the forest. The varied and vibrant tree canopy supports a plethora of bird species including knobbed hornbills, kingfishers, Sulawesi myna, lorikeets and maleo birds. The Sulawesi bear cuscus, a type of tree dwelling marsupial, is another endemic species which can be observed as it moves sloth-like through the greenery.

An array of butterflies live in the park as well as a multitude of lizard and amphibian dwellers. The brightly colored Forester Moth is one of the most eye catching of all buttefly species which we regularly see during our walks through the park.

Small lizards can also be see in the trees and underfoot as well as larger monitor lizards which are often spotted warming themselves in the sun. One of the most unique reptiles found in the park is the Draco flying lizard ( Draco spilonotus) , or the ‘Sulawesi Lined Gliding Lizard’. This unusual species has patagiums (membranes or wing-like folds of skin between the forelimbs and hind limbs) on each side that enable it to launch itself and ‘glide’ from tree to tree.

Our trip to Tangkoko includes visiting the park, light trekking through the forest and countless wildlife encounters and nature photography opportunities. Tangkoko is around a 1.5 hour drive from Lembeh Resort and we offer both a full day and half day option.

Full Day Tangkoko Trip

For the full day tour of the park we leave early in the morning and arrive at the Tangkoko Lodge and rangers station in time for a breakfast. After a hearty breakfast and introduction to our expert local tour guide we begin exploring the park in search of the most iconic species. Half of the day is spent gently trekking through the forest, while the other half is spent exploring the mangroves by boat. Lunch is served in between at the ranger station. During the trek is when we usually have sightings of cuscus, macaques and tarsiers. Cruising through the mangroves allows us to observe the nature of the park from the water. As our small local boat glides silently along, this is when we often encounter herons, kingfishers, large monitor lizards, sandpipers, terns and frigate birds flying overhead.

Half Day Tangkoko Trip – ideal for after your final morning dives

Half day Tangkoko tours can be morning or afternoon tours depending on your diving schedule and preferences. We recommend taking the Tangkoko tour in the afternoon, after your morning dives, so you don’t miss out on any time underwater. Taking the half day tour in the afternoon also gives us the best possible chances of spotting the iconic tarsier monkeys which become active in the late afternoon. During our half day tour we trek for around 2-3 hours with an expert park ranger through the forest looking for the birds, butterflies, cuscus and primates. It is not unusual to see large numbers of these animals on each trip. Bird species are also commonly spotted although during the half day tour but during this option we do not take the boat tour through the mangroves.

Planning a Trip to Tangkoko

A trip to Tangkoko is highly recommended during your stay – the gentle stroll through the lush forest and the rare animals which inhabit the park are a wonderful way to experience the nature of North Sulawesi . Photographers will be overwhelmed by the volume of photographic opportunities which present themselves, from staggering landscapes through to primates in the wild and even macro insects and butterflies.

Light clothing and long pants (and sleeves) are recommended and good walking shoes or training shoes are required. Both the half day and full day tour include drinking water, refreshments and snacks. The full day tour also includes breakfast and lunch.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Do they speak English in Moscow?

Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
