"The Call of the Hills"
Yelagiri tourism.
A quaint little hill station located in Vellore, Yelagiri is just three hours away from Bangalore, making it the perfect spot for a quick weekend getaway. Spread a little over 30 square kilometres, and at a height of over 1100 metres above sea level, Yelagiri offers its tourists some beautiful places like the Jalagamparai falls, sweeping orchards and rose garden, among others. The ideal destination for nature lovers, Yelagiri is a town that is completely off the beaten tourist trail, lending it a quieter and much more peaceful vibe compared to other more famous hill stations nearby. Originally belonging to the Zamindar family of Yelagiri, the hill station began to gain popularity since the colonial rule, when it was used by the British as a summer getaway. Ever since then, it has been one of the hidden gems of South India, replete with rocky hills and natural scenic beauty, making it the perfect place to take a break from the fast-paced city life.
Yelagiri is one of those typical, silent places that seem ordinary on the outside but are more and more startling as you discover it. It has all the features of a great hill station, be it sunset points or lakes and parks. But the beauty of Yelagiri lies in all the more that it has to offer. Being one of the lesser known hill-stations in Tamil Nadu, the place is rarely overcrowded. The surroundings are pristine and the forests are home to some rare species of flora and fauna. The honey that is locally available is considered to be one of the purest and tastiest varieties.

15 Best Places to Visit in Yelagiri for Nature Lovers
The eastern ghats don't just have the alluring Nilgiris that give it such a touristy appeal, there are many enchanting places and neighbourhoods too that make it a must-visit. One such little heavenly hamlet is Yelagiri, a beautiful hill station in Tamil Nadu known for its magnificent waterfalls, lakes and temples.
It is the perfect destination for a quick getaway from the city. You can just relax and enjoy the peace and tranquillity that the hill station has to offer to you. There are quite a few places to visit in Yelagiri like the Jalagamparai waterfalls, the Punganoor lake, Telescope Observatory and much more. It might not be an ideal or conventional destination to head to, but it is certainly one that you ought to add to your list of places to visit. Though the weather remains moderate here throughout the year, it is advisable to plan a trip to Yelagiri between November to February.
Here are some of the best tourist places to visit in Yelagiri.
Punganoor Lake
A human-made lake that will sweep you off your feet with its stunning view. Punganoor Lake is an absolute delight for nature lovers and a popular place to visit in Yelagiri. Jalagamparai Waterfalls
The Jalagamparai Waterfalls is absolutely magical and one of the best tourist places in Yelagiri that you cannot miss. You will witness the best views of the waterfall between November to January. It is a 5 km trek, and it's so rewarding! While the trek might seem a little cumbersome, the view from up here makes up for everything. You’ll not want to leave at all.
Swamimalai Hills
If you love adventure as much as you do nature, trekking to the Swamimalai Hills is the best thing to do in Yelagiri. One of the specialities about the places is that the hills are shaped like a cake. It's one of the most popular tourist places in Yelagiri for all the right reasons. However, you will see a lesser crowd here during monsoon.

Jalagandeeswarar Temple
The Jalagandeeswarar Temple is another popular place to visit in Yelagiri, especially if you are a devotee of Lord Shiva. An interesting belief at the temple is that when people place their hands on a special earthen lamp here, and it rotates, it means their prayers have been heard. The temple has been constructed with stone with an idol of the deity.
Nilavoor Lake
Nilavoor Lake is yet another artificial lake in Yelagiri that's perfect for sightseeing. You can opt for a boat ride and spend your mornings or evenings finding that peace and calm you've been yearning for. It's the best place for nature lovers to head to in Yelagiri.
Amirthi Zoological Waterfalls

You can sign up for a guided tour to learn a thing or two about our universe. It will certainly not disappoint you at all.

The Velavan Temple is for devotees of Lord Murugan and another popular tourist attraction in Yelagiri. You'll find a lot of peace and tranquillity at the temple. The entire surrounding will leave a calming effect on your mind, and it is also the best place to meditate.
Moksha Vimochana Temple
The Moksha Vimochana Temple is for devotees of Lord Vishnu. It's close to the Nilavoor Lake and also has quite a few religious tales attached to it. It is said that if you pray in this temple for 42 days consecutively, you can get rid of all your troubles. Apart from that, what draws tourists to the temple is its calm and soothing environment.
Government Herbal Farm
Near Punganoor Lake is the Government Herbal Farm, one of the most scenic places to visit in Yelagiri. You will find a lot of rare, green herbs that have medicinal properties. If it is Ayurvedic treatment that you seek, this is the best place to head to and explore.
Yelagiri Adventure Camp
Started very recently by the Tamil Nadu government, the Yelagiri Adventure Camp offers a lot of adventure activities to its tourists. From mountain climbing and paragliding to trekking and hiking, the activities only attract more tourists to the hills..
Yelagiri Forest Hill
Rich with paddy fields, horticultural fields and woods, the Yelagiri Forest Hill is like paradise for nature lovers. It is, without a doubt, a great place to visit in Yelagiri and presents to you the most breathtaking view from up top.
Perumal Temple
You will find a lot of devotees at Perumal temple throughout the year, thanks to its wonderful architecture and landscape. It is one of the best places to visit in Yelagiri.
A little away from Yelagiri is Yercaud, another hill station which is known for its scenic landscapes, beautiful lakes and a serene environment. You can head over to Yercaud once you are done exploring Yelagiri to its fullest.

Mesmerizing Views and Hairpin Bends: A Day Trip to Yelagiri from Bangalore
The hill that is Yelagiri
The panoramic views from the road
Yelagiri Hills
Yelagiri is a destination to be felt....it is so close to Bangalore, and yet seems so far away from the machinations of city life. This tiny hill station left an deep imprint on our minds.
What really stayed with us is perhaps the suddenness with which we arrived. Moving on a narrow stretch of road, lined with coconut trees, and some scattered huts scattered, with no sign of twists and turns, and no mountain in sight, we were wondering whether we might have lost our way. Suddenly we came across a mammoth hill in front of us, and the realization hit us that this was the hill we were to ascend to reach Yelagiri!
As we started ascending, the air became cooler, the turns more intense, the views spanned out in front of us like a panorama and the setting sun suffused the atmosphere in a reddish gold glow. We realised that we were navigating the hairpin bends Google maps had shown us like a child's scribble!

Why would I want to visit here?
Weekend getaway.
We were bored of staying back in Bangalore. We had no leaves to spare, only 1.5 day weekend, but wanted to go on a hill vacation. Yelagiri fit the bill perfectly, being just about 200km away from Bangalore. It can be covered as a day trip. We reached Saturday night, and starting back by Sunday afternoon, covering the place in 1.5 days.
The second reason to visit is adventure. Right from entering here, when we have to navigate the hairpin bends, to the numerous adventure parks which offer ATV rides, Zipling etc., Yelagiri is an adventurous destination. Paragliding is also offered around Yelagiri, though we didn't enquire about it. Trek to Swamimalai hills is also possible to admire the panoramic views, though we missed it this time.
There is nothing much to do here. There aren't any 'spots to cover' or 'must do things' to check off your list. It is a sleepy little place and great for relaxing, lounging along the lake, buying some natural honey or other products, taking long walks(or treks), admiring nature or the parks built around this tiny hill town, or the misty mornings and evenings(you must go in December-January to experience this. We went in Feb when it was slightly warmer)
Best Time to Visit
Anytime is good, but Dec-Jan are cooler with mist in the mornings and evenings, which brings out the beauty of Yelagiri hills.
The Road Taken
We took the NICE road upto Electronic City and exited through Hosur. The road is a treat to go on a drive, with huge rocks and hillocks welcoming the drivers on each side.
On the way to Yelagiri

There is a small turn from the main road which goes to Yelagiri, and from then on, the road is narrow but in good condition.

As we started moving through the hairpin bends, the air got cooler, the monkey population started increasing and the view became enthralling.
A mesmerising sunset was in store for us.

Hotel Hill Breeze
Accommodation.
There are a number of options to stay in Yelagiri. We stayed in Hotel Hill Breeze, which is just next-door to Kumararaja Palace(a sort of Heritage Hotel). Hotel Hill Breeze is decent for a short stay. The manager was very helpful, and seeing that we were 3 people, upgraded us to a bigger room. The food in their in-house restaurant though was not very good, which made us decide to have breakfast outside the next day.
Food options in Yelagiri are very limited. The usual fare is idli, vada, dosa, pongal. We had breakfast at a hole-in-the-wall place called Madras Palace. They had the most amazing Pongal. The menu was quite limited though.

Itinerary and Places to Visit
We reached Yelagiri after a 3 hour continuous drive from Bangalore. We reached around sunset, and enjoyed radiant views on our way to the hotel. After checking, we rested for a bit, and went to our first destination-Yelagiri Nature Park. It hosts a Musical Fountain on weekends
Yelagiri - Nature Park
The show starts at 7 pm and lasts for half an hour. The cost is Rs. 25 per person. Paid parking is available at the spot.
After enjoying the show, we went back to our hotel where they had organized a bonfire. It started around 10 in the night.
The next day, we woke up late so cancelled the plan to trek to Swamimalai Hills.
Yelagiri Lake
After breakfast at Madras Palace, we went to Poonganur Lake and spent some time there. It is inside a park which closes at 6pm.
Boating at Lake
The coolest thing: Wearing the T-shirt I received as a gift from Tripoto
We were suggested to visit Fundera Park for interaction with birds(Rs. 300 per person is the entry ticket), Fundera Fish Park, some other adventure parks. But we didn't have much interest. They may be good for families with young children.

We left Yelagiri around 1 pm. These are some of the views while leaving.
The road is very narrow, and we got caught up in a traffic jam for sometime which delayed our progress. But we were back in Bangalore by evening, from this short and sweet trip.
Yelagiri is overall an amazing place to visit close to Bangalore. It appears to be a tiny nondescript place in the Indian map, but the sights it offers are absolutely mesmerizing.

Yelagiri | An Epic Bike Ride From Chennai | January 2021
THE PLANNING
A road trip is what I’ve always wanted to do from the time I started riding bikes and the first trip came out of nowhere. One day I was hanging around for the night at one of our friend’s houses and at 3 AM we thought of going on a nice road trip the next morning. We quickly finished our cheese Maggi and slept so that we could wake up by 6 AM. Initially, the three of us were going on a car trip to Yelagiri/Banglore but as usual in a friend’s trip, someone has to back out (though genuine reasons). We then decided to go on a bike ride which both of us – Mayank and myself wanted to do for a very long time.
After a 2 hours nap, we woke up, called our families, and informed them about our impromptu plan for a trip. Then we had our breakfast and went to our homes to pack stuff for the trip. We were just too excited to pack things properly or FOOD for that matter and suffered a lot because of this later during our trip. We also ringed a few of our friends and asked if they would like to join us for the trip but most of them were still sleeping to even convince their parents or themselves for it. Initially, we thought of riding on two different bikes but then decided against it.
We then set out for the ride on our very own Royal Enfield Himalayan – an offroad beast by Royal Enfield. Packed just a pair of clothes, we set out on our journey of 230 KMs from Chennai to Yelagiri Hills .
We started our ride by 9 AM and the sun was already up and shining. We had little concerns about that as we had our jackets, helmets & excitement on. The journey was mainly a straight highway that passes through Vellore and ascends the Yelagiri Hills which has 14 hairpin bends .
Initially, Mayank was riding the RE Himalayan and we were cruising with a constant speed of 80-100 kmph and covered close to 100 KMs. During that, we had a close call where Mayank was trying to overtake a truck and the truck inched in on us. We nearly crashed onto the bushes planted on the road dividers but narrowly escaped.
A while later we decided to switch and I took over the driving. The first impression of the Chennai-Bengaluru highway was that it’s quite smooth and wide so it feels good to be riding on it. Occasionally, we would see mountains in front of us which was quite a sight. We were just too excited to be on a bike ride that we did not care about taking any breaks and continued to ride for nearly 175 KMs.
We then halted at a roadside vendor to rejuvenate ourselves with coconut water. Soon the photo session took over and we started clicking photos and taking videos performing our own version of stunts and bends. We then continued on our way and were close to reaching Yelagiri Hills.
A PLEASANT JOURNEY TO THE WAY UP
Usually, it takes around 4 hours to reach Yelagiri Hills from Chennai but we were cruising well that even after a 30-minutes photo session break, we were on track to reach Yelagiri Hills by 1 PM. I know many of you would be wondering at this point that there’s literally no planning at all on what we’ve been doing from the night but we were just too excited to think logically on that day.
Nearing the Yelagiri Hills, we took a wrong turn and entered a village (courtesy – Google Maps). At that point, we were too hungry that even after seeing the hills going far away from us, we continued on the Maps route. Luckily, a kind anna showed us the right path to the Yelagiri hills . We then started riding up the hills and the first cool breeze which hit us felt like a delight . Little did we know that it was going to be the end of our fun journey and the miserable phase would kick in.
After riding for nearly 250 KMs, we reached the Yelagiri Hills by 1:30 PM and were super hungry by that time. We had just 2 idlies in the morning for our breakfast and were unable to find any good hotels in the hills. We looked around a few more hotels and finally decided to have lunch at one of the resorts and it was one of the worst decisions we took .
THE MISERY BEGINS
The food, to begin with, was made with such a terrible oil that while eating itself we realized that our stomach is going to be upset . Mayank started feeling sick and I could see that he was affected by food poisoning. Initially, we thought to stay there but decided against it as earlier last month he was affected with Covid and we thought its best we reach home on time. It was nearly 4 PM and Mayank had already vomited twice on our way down the hills.
Luck wasn’t in our favor on this fateful day. While riding, we realized that our rear brakes have failed and it being a festive time in South India (Pongal), we had no luck finding any mechanic or a motorcycle workshop. We stopped at 4-5 workshops but all of them were closed. We couldn’t even drive slowly using the front brakes as our home was nearly 200 KMs far away. Luckily, there was one small workshop where the mechanic examined and found the issue with the pressure on the brake oil. He fixed it and the brakes started working. That was the time I realized that how important it is to know and understand your bike.
FAILED BRAKES AND VOMITS
From there on, Mayank’s health deteriorated and I started riding the bike. We were completely exhausted with unhealthy food in our stomachs and had to ride 200 more KMs to get proper rest. We somehow sat on our bikes and rode on. In the next one hour, we covered 90 KMs but still had a long way to go. It was almost time for sunset and Mayank wanted to have a break from sitting so long on the bike so we halted for a while. Mayank had a quick nap on the footpath and I attended a discussion call with a company’s HR I was interviewing with. Thankfully the brakes had been working fine since then and I could drive properly with very minimal sleep and no proper food (still having that excitement in me that I am on a road trip).
TO THE SAFE ZONE
After sunset, it became pitch dark on the highways . The bike’s headlight could only help us so much and so I decided to follow a car’s wheels such that it would be easy to avoid any potholes and prevent mishaps due to less light. We then entered the city (I passed through my college gates – yes my college is on the outskirts of the city). It was such a huge relief for us with the familiar roads and occasional street lights flickering on us.
Finally, by 8:30 PM, I parked the bike in Mayank’s garage and took him up to his house. I then started to my home in my Pulsar NS200 (a very short 600-meter ride) and had a nice dinner and a good night’s sleep.
Thankfully, I am here to type the ending paragraph of this ‘ epic ‘ bike ride trip we thought would be a nice impromptu trip. It turned out to be a ride to remember with pleasant weather, great roads, amazing bike, and lots of vomits. We covered more than 500 KMs out of which I drove nearly 350 KMs. Before this, the maximum I have driven in a day was just under 120 KMs!
While I would never do such a badly planned trip ever again – c’mon, we never carried food, water, or check out places to stay & eat in Yelagiri; I would still take this experience whole-heartedly and as a lesson to research and pack emergencies & food supplies . But yeah, finally we were able to go on a bike ride trip which we dreamt of for a very long time . And for Mayank, well he recovered after losing nearly 5 kgs and week-long bed rest.
Do plan bike rides but do not make it so impromptu that it gives you a week-long bed rest!
