Project Genesis [ ]

In 2285 , the Reliant served at the disposal of Drs. Carol and David Marcus during their research for Project Genesis . While Marcus and her team worked from the Regula I space station , the Reliant searched for a lifeless planet to serve as a suitable test site to satisfy the stringent requirements necessary for stage three of the Genesis Experiment.

Ceti Alpha VI and Khan's revenge [ ]

Reliant orbiting Ceti Alpha V

On Stardate 8130.4, the Reliant approached the planet Ceti Alpha VI . During the scan of the planet, one of the Reliant 's dynoscanners detected a "minor energy flux " on the surface on what seemed to otherwise be a prime location for the experiment . Hurried by the growing impatience their unsuccessful mission bore upon them, Captain Terrell and his first officer Commander Pavel Chekov transported to the surface to investigate the energy flux, hoping that it was something they could "transplant" in advance of testing.

The landing party , however, instead discovered a group of exiles , led by Khan Noonien Singh . Khan and his followers quickly captured the two Starfleet officers and informed them that the planet Reliant was orbiting was not Ceti Alpha VI but actually Ceti Alpha V . Khan then took control of Terrell and Chekov through the use of Ceti eels and successfully hijacked the Reliant , marooning her crew on the planet's surface. Having learned of the Genesis Device , Khan pursued acquiring the secrets of the device that the Reliant was contracted to work for and took the Reliant to the Regula I space station.

Unable to get what he desired from the station crew, Khan used the Reliant to intercept Admiral Kirk and the USS Enterprise . ( Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan )

The encounter between the Reliant and the Enterprise was witnessed by the Tardigrade " Ephraim " as she pursued the Enterprise , on which she had laid her eggs , many years previous. ( ST : " Ephraim and Dot ")

In an ambush , the Reliant caused severe damage to the engineering section of the Enterprise , but Khan was unable to revel in his victory because the Reliant itself fell victim to a counter-ambush from the Enterprise after its crew managed to partially disable its defenses by accessing them through the Reliant 's prefix code .

The attack caused moderate damage to the Reliant , including the loss of photon torpedo control and the ship's warp drive . Despite the damage, the Reliant escaped and returned to Regula where it hid behind the planetoid while making repairs and awaiting the next opportunity to engage the Enterprise . Khan took up the pursuit shortly afterwards when hailed and taunted by Kirk into the Mutara Nebula .

The final engagement [ ]

USS Reliant disabled

After completing repairs, Khan discovered that the Enterprise was not as crippled as he was led to believe and gave chase when he discovered the Enterprise making a run for the nearby Mutara Nebula. Despite having the tactical advantage over the Enterprise , Khan ultimately lost the battle due to his lack of strategic experience operating a starship. The Enterprise was able to take advantage of this weakness by outmaneuvering the Reliant and critically disabling it with phaser bursts and photon torpedoes, destroying much of its upper weapons pylon and finally its port nacelle .

The Reliant was ultimately destroyed inside the nebula by Khan's detonation of the Genesis Device. The crew was rescued from Ceti Alpha V shortly afterward by the Enterprise . ( Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan )

Background information [ ]

The Reliant was originally intended to be a Constitution -class starship; the script describes her as "an older, somewhat battered starship of the Enterprise class, with a slightly different configuration." [3] The cumbersomeness of the Enterprise studio model from Star Trek: The Motion Picture (vehemently expressed by Special Visual Effects Supervisor Kenneth Ralston at the time) was part of the reason why the class of the Reliant was redesigned from a Constitution -class to the Miranda -class , the other reason being that the producers were afraid that audiences would not be able to tell the two ships apart during the battle sequences. " In the dogfight you had to instantly recognize which ship you were looking at, so they had to look different. At the same time, you had to make them look like they came from the same culture and had the same technology ", Joe Jennings elaborated. ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 3, Issue 5 , p. 69)

Her name meaning "dependent", the Reliant was designed by Joe Jennings and Mike Minor and was the first distinct Federation starship design other than the NCC-1701 to appear in a filmed, live-action Star Trek production.

The Reliant bridge was simply a redress of the bridge of the Enterprise .

Miranda class, NCC-1864

Dominion War participant bearing the Reliant 's registry number

One of the Miranda -class starships seen in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode " Tears of the Prophets " bore the registry number NCC-1864. The ship in question was one of the two ships described by David Stipes as being either the USS Nautilus (NCC-31910) or USS Tian An Men (NCC-21382). [4]

In the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode " What You Leave Behind ", another Reliant was part of the Federation Alliance fleet that departed from Deep Space 9 for the final battle.

In 2008 , Hallmark issued a USS Reliant Christmas ornament.

Apocrypha [ ]

In the 2012 Star Trek: Ships of the Line calendar, for the month of July, the Reliant appeared in an alternate timeline approaching a Spacedock -type space station named Tango Sierra ( β ). In the 2015 Star Trek: Ships of the Line , for the month of August, Reliant appeared opposite the USS Enterprise -A , in a spread titled 'Joint Operations'. In the 2018 Star Trek: Ships of the Line , for the month of May, Reliant appeared again, this time being depicted as undergoing repairs (ostensibly from the battle of the Mutara Nebula) with the Enterprise nearby.

According to the Lost Era novel The Sundered , the Reliant visited the Halkan homeworld in 2281 to respond to an attack by Orion pirates . While leading an away team on the surface, Chekov met a young Halkan named Lojur , who had been exiled by his village elders for using deadly force against the attackers, which violated the Halkans' strict pacifism . Chekov took the young exile with him back to the Reliant where Lojur later joined Starfleet and served on board the USS Excelsior .

Both the novels Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan and the To Reign in Hell: The Exile of Khan Noonien Singh indicate that in addition to Captain Terrell and Commander Chekov, Khan also used Ceti eels to take control of the ship's engineering crew. To Reign in Hell also states that Khan killed or maimed several members of the Reliant 's crew in a fit of pent-up rage (described as "a vicious prelude to the massacre at Regula I"), with ten dead before they were rescued.

Service history and disposition [ ]

Reliant 's prefix code was 16309. ( ST video game : Starfleet Academy Starship Bridge Simulator , TOS movie , novelization & comic adaptation : The Wrath of Khan )

The Reliant was originally built as a Anton -subclass research cruiser . On reference stardate 2/1410 , the Reliant was ordered to the Morena shipyards for a refit to Mk IV Anton specifications. While the ship was being dismantled for the engine refit, Starfleet Command decided to mount a different engine configuration onto the Reliant than was included on other Mk IV's. Due to this change, several external design changes had to be made, and Starfleet decided to make the Reliant the prototype of a new subclass: the Reliant -subclass . Following the extensive refit, the Reliant re-entered service on stardate 2/1509 . ( FASA RPG module : Federation Ship Recognition Manual )

The Reliant was equipped with tractor beams , graviton anchors , and dynoscanners . ( WizKids module : Tactics )

Helen Noel had transferred to the Reliant in the 2260's. ( TOS novel : The Weight of Worlds )

Reliant original configuration

The USS Reliant in an original configuration.

By the late 2270s , the Reliant was under the command of Captain Clark Terrell . In 2281 , the Reliant proceeded to the planet Halka after learning that they had been attacked by the Orions . Lt. Commander Pavel Chekov led a landing party to the surface and learned that a local boy named Lojur took up arms against the Orions, and was subsequently banned from his village by the Elders. Chekov took pity on the boy and beamed him aboard the Reliant . ( TLE novel : The Sundered )

Admiral Rivard assigned the Reliant to take point during a mission on the edge of the Romulan Neutral Zone alongside a group of Constitution -class starships . ( ST reference : Ships of the Line )

In 2284 , the Reliant was detached from active service and assigned to assist Dr. Carol Marcus and her Project Genesis team find a suitable uninhabited planet for testing. In 2285 , Terrell and Chekov beamed down to a planet they believed to be Ceti Alpha VI . When they discovered Khan Noonien Singh and his followers, they discovered that they were, in fact, on Ceti Alpha V , and that Ceti Alpha VI had been destroyed.

Using Terrell and Chekov, Khan took control of the Reliant and marooned nearly the entire crew on Ceti Alpha V. The only other crew who remained were the engine room company, whom Khan forced into his service with Ceti eels . After engaging the USS Enterprise and inflicting heavy damage, Khan took the Reliant to Regula I where he captured the Genesis Device . A cat-and-mouse game with the Enterprise in the Mutara Nebula led to the Reliant being crippled. At a distance of +4,000 kilometers , the Enterprise warped out-as Reliant was ultimately destroyed by Khan's detonation of the Genesis Device inside the nebula . ( TOS movie , novelization & comic adaptation : The Wrath of Khan ; WizKids modules : Tactics , Attack Wing )

Two hundred crewmembers of the Reliant were killed. ( TOS novel : War Dragons )

Following Khan's defeat, the Enterprise traveled to Ceti Alpha V and recovered the surviving members of the Reliant 's crew. From there they were safely transported to Starbase 12 , with the exception of Pavel Chekov , who rejoined Kirk's senior staff on Enterprise . U.S.S. Reliant NCC-1864

The Federation Starship Reliant was a Miranda class vessel. In 2280 , the Reliant, under the command of Captain Clark Terrell , was assigned to Project Genesis . Five years later on Stardate  8121 , while searching for a lifeless world where the radical terraforming technology could be tested safely, the ship was seized by Khan Noonien Singh , who stranded the crew on the devastated world of Ceti Alpha V . The ship was destroyed several days later, when Khan detonated the Genesis Device in a last-ditch attempt to kill Admiral James T. Kirk . [1]

Forgotten Trek

Designing the Reliant

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan would give Trekkers the first Starfleet ship beside the original Enterprise . (Or, more accurately, the Constitution class.) But that wasn’t the original plan.

In early versions of the scrip, the Reliant was a sister ship of the Enterprise . Production Designer Joseph Jennings worried this would make it hard for viewers to distinguish between the two ships during the battle in the Mutara Nebula. “In the dogfight you had to instantly recognize which ship you were looking at, so they had to look different,” he told Star Trek: The Magazine in 2002.

At the same time, you had to make them look like they came from the same culture and had the same technology.

Jennings worked with Lee Cole and Mike Minor to design the new vessel. “It was the first time a new starship had been designed since the Klingon battle cruiser,” he remembered.

She was supposed to be a coastal and geodetic survey ship, like a buoy tender. She would be armed, perhaps, but only lightly. She wasn’t a lion ship like the Enterprise . Also, remember the Enterprise was always supposed to be an exploratory vessel where the armament was secondary. That was even more true for the Reliant . She was supposed to just stick around in the known universe and take care of things that everybody already knew about.

The three came up with a compressed version of the Enterprise .

We had long postulated that the circular saucer said, “This is Starfleet navy,” and it used engines that looked pretty much like those on the Enterprise .

They eliminated the engineering hull and attached the nacelles to an extended saucer section instead.

Upside down

Except the nacelles looked over the saucer in their design. Cole remembered how they ended up underneath.

Harve Bennett, the movie’s producer, was working abroad before they started filming Star Trek II . “We were mailing everything over to him and getting him to approve it and mail it back to us,” Cold told Star Trek: The Magazine , “so we did our first sketch of the ship and mailed them off to him.” Bennett was supposed to sign for approval at the bottom of the sheet.

Reliant concept art

When he got it in the mail, he took it out of the package upside down, I guess, and wrote out on the bottom, “Yes, this looks very good, proceed.” So when we got it back, we realized he’d approved it upside down.

Rather than bother Bennett again, the three decided to make it work that way, and it did. Jennings and Lee added what Minor dubbed a “roll bar” to support the dropped nacelles. Phaser banks were put in this supporting structure.

Two models were built at Industrial Light and Magic. Visual Effects Supervisor Kenneth Ralston told Cinefantastique in 1982,

The ship takes the best of the Enterprise , rearranges it, and adds a few goodies of its own.

In a separate interview with American Cinematographer , he recalled that the model was “perfectly constructed for shooting. It’s light,” he said, “highly detailed, non-reflective and could be easily mounted from all sides for any possible setup.”

Robert Diepenbrock, who worked at ILM at the time, told Forgotten Trek in February 2020 that the large Reliant was built in the same scale as the Enterprise . The small Reliant matched the larger version “in every detail and was used in forced-perspective and wide-effects shots.”

Reliant model

The high quality and scale of the large model allowed it to be reused many times in episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine . It was not until its appearance in the second television series that the class name, Miranda , was confirmed on screen.

It also showed several ships of the type without the “roll bar”. The reason was that the effects crew were unable to make its internal lighting work on time.

An extensive refit was done for the episode “Cause and Effect”. The model was redressed to represent the USS Bozeman of the Soyuz starship class. The modifications were designed by Greg Jein and Mike Okuda but not permanently affixed to the model, allowing it to reappear as the Miranda -class USS Saratoga in the pilot of Deep Space Nine , “Emissary”.

Miranda ships that appeared in later episodes of Deep Space Nine and Voyager were CGI models, also created by ILM.

OK… First of all, you don’t launch phasers; they’re pure energy. I believe the terminology used is “banks”. (You know, if they actually existed.) Secondly, the Reliant was hardly only the second Starfleet vessel to be seen on screen. Numerous vessels were seen on The Original Series , The Animated Series and in The Motion Picture .
Phil, The Original Series and The Motion Picture only showed a few tiny Starfleet ships. Some small support vessels and shuttles. Unless I’m forgetting something? So maybe I should have written “major” ship there, but the Reliant was the first proper starship to be designed since the original Enterprise . Again, unless I forgot one here, in which case – do let me know, please. I’m not including TAS here, which was only recently “canonized”, as you may know. You’re correct about the phasers, by the way, so I’m replacing “launchers” with “banks”. Good catch.
Nick, I like your website. Do you know where the deflector was on the Reliant ?
Matt, I don’t, but you might want to check out this article at Ex Astris Scientia . Scroll down to the section “Ships without deflectors”.
The Reliant was a much more powerful ship than the Enterprise or a Klingon battle cruiser. In addition to standard weapons, it had an enormous weapons pod with two large PHASER CANNONS which could fire fore and aft and two large torpedo launchers which could also fire fore and aft. It had two shuttlebays instead of one. The ship was more compact and more maneuverable. They inadvertently designed a much superior ship to the Enterprise without meaning to.
I think the Reliant was actually designated as a frigate, according the the blueprints. And unless my memory is failing, she’s an Avenger -class Starship.
I have to say someone missed his technical manuals. In the mid 1970s a friend of my dad’s gave me two of the coolest things ever. One was a 12-sheet set of Enterprise blueprints. I wish I still had ’em. The other was a starfleet technical manual. I’m sure you can find a copy out there. The basic design of the Reliant was actually already seen in the “tug” that was shown in one of the sections of that book. I wish I could find a picture but essentially the moment that ship appeared in 1981-2 (? I was 12, I think) I knew where the design had come from, because I’d been looking at it eagerly and even imagined taking apart one of the model kits to create it, for several years. It’s cool but they had to have taken a look at those manuals — I believe Matt Jeffries wrote them back in the early 1970s.
Franz Joseph did both, I believe. Great items.
“In mid 2267 the Lexington led a fleet to Organia that included the USS Enterprise , USS Constitution , eight other unnamed Constitution -class starships, two Miranda -class ships, a few Icarus -class starships and various cargo and support vessels.” (TOS episode: “Errand of Mercy” The Intrepid ( exterior ), Constitution (interior only), and Enterprise (exterior) all appeared on screen in the TOS “Court Martial”. The USS Lexington also appeared in exterior on TOS. Along with the USS Excalibur , Lexington , Hood and Potemkin , in battle simulation, shown in exterior in the TOS episode “The Ultimate Computer”.
There were plenty of other Constitution -class starships featured in The Original Series in addition to the Enterprise .
Constitution -class starships were the only large Starfleet vessels to be featured in The Original Series . Because of budget constraints, they were limited to using stock footage of the Enterprise for other ships, selecting only footage that did not show the hull registry numbers clearly. The only other Starfleet vessel shown in TOS was the shuttlecraft. Again, stock footage of the Galileo was used. The full-size Galileo prop/stage was finally renamed “ Galileo II ” in the third season episode “The Way to Eden”. Even in that episode the Aurora that Dr Sevrin and his colleagues stole was the Tholian Web Spinner redressed with warp nacelles. There were no other starships aside from the Enterprise in “Court Martial”. The remastered TOS episodes gave the production team more liberty to show other vessels as CGI, all of which had their design origins in media other than TOS. I’m talking specifically about TAS, the Starfleet Reference Manual and other (semi-canon) printed material. Nick is quite correct that the Reliant was the first non- Constitution -class starship to be designed and make it to the screen after the Enterprise refit (TMP). It was followed by the Excelsior and the Grissom in Star Trek III . The Enterprise “ring ship” appears as an illustration only in the recreation deck of TMP Enterprise . The only model of that ship to appear on screen is the small desk model briefly shown in Star Trek: Into Darkness . A point worth noting is that recent discussions about the feasibility of FTL travel have posited a design not unlike the ring ship that would “stretch” space in front of the ship and “squash” it behind, creating a wave of accelerated space/time for the ship to travel in. Life imitating art, don’t you think?
I thought we saw the Defiant in TOS…
The USS Defiant appeared in the TOS episode “The Tholian Web”. Stock footage of the Enterprise model was used, overlayed with a green glowing effect. When the episode was remastered, the SFX team had the opportunity to add some close up shots displaying the hull registry (NCC-1764).
Ah, thanks. Very good.
There was also a strike force half a dozen Constitutions in “The Ultimate Computer”.
When they feature a distressed Constitution -class ship in the doomsday device episode, they used an off-the-shelf, sold in hobby shops, plastic model kit of the Enterprise and mashed it up with battle damage. In later shows they used store bought kits for background ships.
Quite correct John, that was an off-the-shelf AMT 18″ USS Enterprise kit. Desilu and Paramount/CBS had a good relationship with AMT, the company that created the models. They had previously struck a deal on the licensing for the kits. AMT manufactured the full-size mockup of the Galileo in return for the rights to produce Star Trek -related model kits. The same molds have been in use (with some retooling in the case of the Enterprise ) for nearly as long as the series has been around. Not bad for subject matter that is still considered a niche market in the hobby kit industry.

Lieutenant Commander Pavel Chekov became Reliant 's executive officer in May, 2275 .

At that time, the usual patrol zone of the Reliant was in the vicinity of Triangle space, near Nimbus III , Psi Scorpii VIII, and the Antares and Tralachon nebulae. ( Orion Press : " The Blue Rose ")

Stephen Fox was serving on the Reliant in 2285, as an officer in the engineering division. Along with most of the crew, he was left for dead by Khan on the barely-habitable planet Ceti Alpha V . FIRST LOOK: U.S.S. Reliant Model Kit

the reliant star trek

It’s been one of the most-in-demand items on the wish list of Star Trek fans everywhere: a model kit version of the U.S.S. Reliant, last seen commandeered by Khan in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan . Well, StarTrek.com is thrilled to reveal that Polar Lights will unveil a U.S.S. Reliant Model Kit this summer, and StarTrek.com has a First Look.

the reliant star trek

The U.S.S. Reliant will become the latest addition to Polar Lights’ lineup of authentically detailed Star Trek model kits, which already includes the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 Refit and the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 Space Seed Edition. The U.S.S. Reliant is comprised of 40 plastic parts that snap firmly together. The parts are molded in off-white, like the filming miniature used during production on Star Trek II . Registry and markings can be applied using water-slide decals (included), while a few touches of paint will complete the look of the ship as seen in the iconic film.

the reliant star trek

Also, the U.S.S. Reliant Model Kit includes a pose-able base and easy-to-follow pictorial assembly instructions. The finished model will measure 9.5” long. Fans should also be on the lookout for an accessory pack of water-slide “Aztec” decals that will be sold separately. These allow discriminating modelers to add the complex surface detail that can be tough to accomplish by painting.

The U.S.S. Reliant Model Kit and the Aztec Decal Set will be available in July at most hobby retailers, including www.autoworldstore.com , www.culttvmanshop.com and www.megahobby.com . Keep an eye on StarTrek.com for additional details.

9 Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) & Fifty Shades Freed (2018)

Callum keith renne plays ray steele.

In Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Freed , the feature film adaptations of E.L. James' erotic novels, Callum Keith Rennie stars as Ray Steele , the stepfather of Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson). Separated from Anastasia's mother, Carla May Wilks (Jennifer Ehle), Ray takes on the parental role and meets love interest Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) in the first Fifty Shades movie . Considered by Anastasia to be her 'real father,' Ray shares the technical term of stepfather with Carla's new husband.

Sharing a practical and down-to-earth selection of interests with Dornan's Christian Grey, Ray Steele is a warm and caring family character who plays a significant role in the heroine's life. Callum Keith Rennie's portrayal of the character is natural and easy , revealing a comfortable warmth and consistency throughout both movies. While not a leading role here, Rennie's performance is rich and appropriately understated.

8 The Firm (2012)

Callum keith rennie as ray mcdeere.

Following the experiences of lead character Mitchell McDeere (Josh Lucas) and his family as they emerge from witness protection ten years later and face the realities of that change, continuing danger, and their own troubling past experiences. Nikolai's traumatic childhood and subsequent actions, such as killing his abusive uncle and kidnapping Henrietta "Henry" Cole's father (Maddie Hasson), reveal a complex and deeply flawed character.

Despite his acts of violence, Nikolai is loyal and compassionate and later becomes a mentor to Henry, assisting her in controlling her own powers before meeting a tragic end at her hands. Rennie's portrayal of Nikolai underscores his versatility as an actor , bringing depth and subtlety to the character's conflicted nature. Nikolai's commitment and empathy are juxtaposed against his darker impulses and the consequences of his actions, resulting in a compelling portrayal of a morally ambiguous figure.

6 The Umbrella Academy (2019-2024)

Callum keith renne plays lester pocket / harlan cooper.

Callum Keith Rennie plays the enigmatic Lester Pocket in The Umbrella Academy season 3 - a character shrouded in mystery and possessing immense power that he struggles to control. To cope with his overwhelming abilities, Lester travels with a suitcase filled with cassette tapes playing white noise to drown out his surroundings and contain his deadly bursts of power. Pocket's true identity as Harlan Cooper is later unveiled, with other revelations also surfacing through the twisting narrative.

Rennie's portrayal of Lester Pocket/Harlan Cooper delves into themes of power, emotional turmoil, and the consequences of lacking control.

As Harlan strives to control and rid himself of his powers , he forms a bond with Viktor (Elliot Page), only to meet a tragic end at the hands of Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman). Rennie's portrayal of Lester Pocket/Harlan Cooper delves into themes of power, emotional turmoil, and the consequences of lacking control. The Umbrella Academy season 3 promises a gripping narrative as the characters navigate their complex relationships and confront their inner demons.

5 Marvel's Jessica Jones (2018)

Callum keith rennei plays dr. karl malus.

In Marvel's Jessica Jones season 2 , Callum Keith Rennie portrays the enigmatic Dr. Karl Malus , a brilliant yet unethical and morally questionable scientist. Malus delves into illegal human testing to research superhuman abilities, saving Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) with a genetic experimentation procedure following a tragic car crash in her youth. Malus also saved Alisa Jones (Janet McTeer), Jessica's mother, from the same crash - but the more severe injuries and treatment resulted in an uncontrollable, murderous rage that required seclusion.

Dr. Malus is later kidnapped by Jessica's adopted sister, Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor) , and forced to perform a similar procedure to bestow her with superhuman ability, but the operation is interrupted and leads to medical difficulties. Ultimately, Malus meets his demise after destroying his lab, believing his experiment failed. Callum Keith Rennie's portrayal of the troubled character is nuanced yet subtle , with Dr. Malus emerging as a complex and multifaceted antagonist who accomplishes great things but with, at best, mixed results.

4 Due South (1997-1999)

Callum keith rennie plays detective stanley raymond kowalski.

Joining the Canadian crime comedy-drama series Due South for seasons 3 and 4, Callum Keith Rennie played Polish-American Detective Stanley Raymond "Ray" Kowalski . Serving with the Chicago Police Department's 27th Precinct, Kowalski partnered with Canadian Mountie Benton Fraser (Paul Gross) and Fraser's pet wolf, Diefenbaker, to solve crimes and lead the much-loved series. Brought in to replace Dr. Raymond Vecchio (David Marciano) when the character is assigned to work deep undercover, Kowalski loosely impersonates Vecchio to protect his identity until his return.

Callum Keith Rennie's performance as Detective Kowalski is dramatic, fond, and persuasive.

Marking Callum Keith Rennie's first international recognition , his role as the easy-going and amicable police detective Kowalski showcased an accomplished performance and an accessible charisma that blended well with an interesting ensemble and subject matter. Subtly highlighting a charming range of sentimental personality quirks, Callum Keith Rennie's performance as Detective Kowalski is dramatic, fond, and persuasive.

3 Californication (2008-2013)

Callum keith rennie as lew ashby.

As Californication 's Lew Ashby, Callum Keith Rennie plays a main character from the show's second season and a recurring character in seasons five and six. A record producer who asks Hank Moody (David Duchovny) to write his biography after spending time together in jail, Lew forms a close friendship with Moody and reflects many of the lead character's traits. A hedonistic chauvinist, Lew is impulsive, destructive, uncontained, and occasionally morally reprehensible . He enjoys hosting wild parties at his mansion home in Laurel Canyon, and like many of Rennie's other characters, Lew Ashby's character doesn't survive the show.

Rennie's performance intelligently balances Ashby's louder depravities and attitudes with quiet vulnerability, loneliness, and (generally) genuine good intent.

At the end of Californication season 2, Lew accidentally snorts heroin instead of cocaine and dies , but his character often appears to Hank through dreams and imaginary sequences after his demise. This unusual shift in reality and perspective casts a new light on the character. Rennie's performance intelligently balances Ashby's louder depravities and attitudes with quiet vulnerability, loneliness, and (generally) genuine good intent.

2 Star Trek: Discovery (2024)

Callum keith rennie as captain rayner.

Callum Keith Rennie joins the cast of Star Trek: Discovery season 5 as Captain Rayner, the formidable Kellerun officer . Commanding Starfleet's USS Antares, Rayner is portrayed as disciplined and resolute, with a gruff and intelligent demeanor . Demoted for insubordination in Discovery season 5, episode 2, "Under the Twin Moons," Rayner becomes Captain Michael Burnham's (Sonequa Martin-Green) First Officer on the USS Discovery, enhancing the compelling yet challenging dynamic between the two characters.

Star Trek: Discovery' s fans have already drawn parallels between Captain Rayner and Star Trek: Picard 's Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick), recognizing the characters' shared initially standoffish and unlikeable yet ultimately lovable similarities. Rennie's portrayal of Rayner is bold, impactful, and promising , offering a fresh, memorable character that hints at exciting future developments.

1 Battlestar Galactica (2003-2009)

Callum keith rennie as leoben conoy.

In Syfy's acclaimed Battlestar Galactica , created by Ronald D. Moore, Callum Keith Rennie played the enigmatic, deceptive, and pivotal character Leoben Conoy, also known as Cylon Number Two . Initially introduced as an arms dealer in the 2003 Battlestar Galactica miniseries, Rennie's portrayal of Conoy set a dark and foreboding tone that evolved as he became a prominent series regular over Battlestar Galactica 's four seasons. His complex depiction of multiple versions of the Cylon model added a philosophical depth to the character.

Ronald D. Moore was an acclaimed writer-producer of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , and Star Trek: Voyager before he rebooted Battlestar Galactica.

Rennie skillfully explored themes of identity, morality, and spirituality, imbuing Leoben with a manipulative nature that made him a formidable and dangerous adversary and showcased the character's obsessions and profound insights. Rennie's portrayal of Leoben added intricate layers to Battlestar Galactica 's underlying themes , highlighting an impressive acting prowess and an exceptional ability to bring multilayered complexities to his characters, just as Callum Keith Rennie now brings to Star Trek: Discovery.

Who Is Rayner In Star Trek: Discovery Season 5? Kelleruns Explained

A new face has joined the ensemble for the final season of "Star Trek: Discovery," along with a seemingly familiar set of pointy ears. A character named Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) is poised to board "Star Trek: Discovery" for the show's last voyage on Paramount+, and at first blush, this new player appears to be a Vulcan or similar alien species. A TrekMovie interview with series co-showrunner Michelle Paradise, however, has revealed that Rayner isn't Vulcan or Romulan after all: he's actually part of a lesser-known "Star Trek" species called the Kelleruns.

"He's a Kellerun," Paradise told the outlet after also reportedly confirming the character's background to SFX Magazine. "We were looking for a species that not a lot had been done with them. We definitely wanted another non-human on the ship and taking care of things." Currently, Doug Jones' Kelpien executive officer Saru is the most obviously alien member of the Discovery crew, but the majority of the team is perhaps unrealistically human. This brief yet seemingly benign character description is itself a surprise, as the "Discovery" season 5 trailer sort of makes Captain Rayner look like a potential villain. He's initially seen screaming with fury right after a voiceover notes that the item the Discovery crew is after this season "could be very dangerous in the wrong hands."

The Kelleruns Made An Appearance In Deep Space Nine

While we may not know too much about Rayner himself yet, the Kelleruns themselves aren't an entirely new species. They've appeared in just one "Star Trek" episode ever, the season 2 "Deep Space Nine" outing "Armageddon Games." Like most societies portrayed in "Star Trek," the Kelleruns were neither straightforwardly heroic nor totally villainous. They survived a centuries-long war against a rival alien group called the T'Lani, and once peace was accomplished, both sides wisely decided to dispose of the deadly bio-weapons (gene-disrupting viruses called Harvesters) they'd created during the conflict.

However, their attempt to protect future generations from a dangerous weapon crossed into dangerous territory itself: the Kelleruns tried to assassinate Bashir (Alexander Siddig), O'Brien (Colm Meaney), and other scientists with knowledge of their bio-weapons in order to completely eliminate the threat of future war. By the end of the episode, it's clear that the T'Lani were also in on the assassination attempt, and the story ended with a lack of closure for both groups as the scientists in their crosshairs ultimately escaped.

Rayner Will Be Both Heroic And Antagonistic

If the Kellerun seems like a random species to bring back into the "Star Trek" fold, that might be by design. "Kellerun is one that had not been explored a whole lot," Paradise explained. "So we were able to also build some backstory for him and for his planet that we'll come to learn more about later." Since "Trek" canon only includes a brief window into the Kelleruns' history, with very little cultural detail or context, the race functions as a sort of blank slate that the "Discovery" writers can use to tell whatever story they want.

As for whether or not Captain Rayner is a baddie, Paradise told ScreenRant that he's on the right side of history this time. "I don't want to say too much about [Captain Rayner] except that he is a bit of an antagonist with Burnham [but] not in the bad guy sense at all," Paradise informed the outlet. "He's a good guy character."

We'll learn more about Reyner and the Kelleruns when "Star Trek: Discovery" returns for its final season on Paramount+ on April 4, 2024.
