Visit Timanfaya National Park - Best Day Trip in Lanzarote

timanfaya national park

Timanfaya National Park is one of Lanzarote's top attractions, with more than 1 million visitors annually, which makes the second most visited National Park in the Canary Islands, after Teide National Park.

What to see and do inside Timanfaya National Park

How to visit timanfaya national park, timanfaya visitor center, montañas del fuego (mountains of fire) bus tour, el diablo restaurant, camel rides, timanfaya national park walking tours, should you visit timanfaya national park.

Visiting Timanfaya National Park is a unique experience, which should not be missed by anyone coming on holiday to Lanzarote. You'll get to see a one of a kind landscape, made up of volcanic soil and rocks, which makes you feel like you're on another planet, due to its resemblance to the moon.

Facts about Timanfaya National Park

The park that we see nowadays was formed due to volcanic activity in the area and the largest eruptions date back to the year 1730 to 1736, which was a period of continued eruption that led to the landscape that we know today as Timanfaya National Park.

The park Timanfaya covers a great portion of Lanzarote as a whole, spread over 51,07 km²  in the southwest side of the island, in the municipalities of Yaiza and Tinajo.

There are over 25 volcanoes located inside the national park, but only one of them is still active: Timanfaya volcano, which is why the park was named after it.

visit timanfaya lanzarote

The volcanic landscape inside the national park is the main attraction and there are several ways to explore it.

The vast majority of the park can only be accessed by a bus tour, which takes you through the volcanoes in a guided tour that is available in various languages. There's also the possibility of exploring the park through guided walks on designated paths, but you need to book your spot ahead of time.

Inside the park, there's also a visitor's center where you can learn more information, a restaurant called El Diablo, an area for camel rides and a free car park where you can leave your car if you decide to drive here on your own.

So the main attractions in Timanfaya National Park are:

  • Timanfaya Visitor Center in Mancha Blanca - we recommend stopping here before going on the bus tour
  • Audio guided bus tour inside the Timanfaya National Park
  • El Diablo restaurant - how does it sound to try food that was cooked using the heat of an active volcano?
  • Guided walks , which must be booked way ahead of time
  • Camel rides - if you're interested, you can ride a camel and see a bit more of the volcanic landscape

drive to timanfaya national park lanzarote

There are several ways to visit Timanfaya National Park and no matter which one you choose, the important thing is that you don't miss it, as it's definitely one of the best things to do in Lanzarote .

By car - rent a car and drive there yourself

Car rental in Lanzarote is popular among visitors, as it's fairly cheap, fuel is also cheap and driving is not that difficult. In fact, we have a dedicated article about driving in Lanzarote, which we recommend that you read if you decide to rent a car during your stay on the island.

Driving to Timanfaya National Park

Depending on where you're staying in Lanzarote it will take you more or less to get here, but in any case, the journey if shouldn't take you more than 45 - 60 minutes even if you're coming from the very north of the island.

Tips and useful info

  • Puerto del Carmen to Timanfaya - 30 minutes drive
  • Playa Blanca to Timanfaya - 30 minutes drive
  • Costa Teguise to Timanfaya - 40 minutes drive
  • Arrecife to Timanfaya  - 30 minutes drive
  • Orzola to Timanfaya - 60 minutes drive
  • Parking is free (included in the price of the visit)
  • If driving here yourself , avoid mid-day hours. Try to come here either early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Between 11:00 and 15:00 it can be crowded with organized tours and excursions and you may need to wait longer to get on the guided bus tour.
  • Price: Adult: €12.00; Child: €6.00 (7-12 years old) - 20 % discount if you visit after 3 PM.

Book a tour or excursion

If you don't plan to drive while on holiday but you still want to see Lanzarote, there are several options for day tours that you can book and most of them include also a visit to Timanfaya National Park.

Tours are available from all 3 tourist resorts in Lanzarote, so you can book a tour and visit Timanfaya no matter if you are staying in Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen or Costa Teguise. If you're staying somewhere else on the island, you may have to drive here yourself or you may have to go to one of the meeting places along the way.

The purpose of visiting this place first is to understand more about the volcanic phenomenon of Timanfaya, its fauna, flora and coastline, which will make it easier for you to understand everything you observe during your visit to the Park.

There is also a viewing platform on-site, which gives you a hint of what you're about to see when you go inside the volcanic park Timanfaya.

bus tour timanfaya

From the Visitor Center you need to drive further along the road LZ-67, then turn onto LZ-602 when you see the symbol of El Diablo, which is the trademark for the park and was designed by none other than Cesar Manrique himself.

When you get to the car park you need to find a spot for the car and then wait for the next tour bus to leave.

Access to Timanfaya National Park is restricted in order to protect the landscape, so you can't drive around the park yourself and you can't go on foot either since it is strictly forbidden.

Once you get to the car park near El Diablo restaurant you need to wait to get on the next guided bus tour, with professional drivers from the park, who know the roads inside and out.

Even if you come with an excursion, you will need to change buses and go with one of the park's guided bus tours.

Tip for the bus tour inside Timanfaya National Park: if possible, try to sit on the opposite side from the driver on the bus. This side has slightly better views, but no matter where you stay don't worry since everyone stands up at the interesting bits in order to see the landscape on both sides.

The guided bus tour is available in several languages and it takes around 40 - 45 minutes.

The roads inside the park are narrow and windy, which may make some visitors scared and uncomfortable, but there is no need to worry, since the roads are only used by the park's buses, so there's no oncoming traffic.

Tips for the bus tour at Timanfaya National Park:

  • Where to sit on the bus: sit on the right side of the bus if possible
  • Tours take around 45 minutes for a complete route around the park
  • Visit the park early in the morning (between 9 am and 11 am) or after 3 pm in order to avoid queues if you visit by car
  • Buses stop at various points around the park for photos and for people to see the landscape on both side of the road.
  • You are not allowed to exit the bus during the tour, in order to preserve the park.
  • Since you'll only be able to take photos from inside the bus, your photos will have the reflection from the glass window.
  • You can still take some nice photos around the car park before or after going on the bus tour.

Steam geyser at Timanfaya National Park

geyser timanfaya lanzarote

Before or after the bus tour, make sure to ahead next to the restaurant El Diablo, where there's an employee of the park who pours water in order to demonstrate the high temperature of the volcanic, which forms a steam geyser when the cold water gets in contact with the hot volcanic soil.

el diablo restaurant volcano cooking timanfaya

This is the only restaurant in the area, so if you're hungry or you simply want to take a break and get a coffee, this is the only place where you can do that.

The main selling point of Restaurant El Diablo is the fact that they cook most of their meat on a grill which "uses" the heat coming from the volcano. So if you really want a unique experience when visiting Timanfaya National Park, give this restaurant a try. Food is nothing to write home about, but it's not bad either, albeit a bit more expensive, due to its exclusive location inside a national park. A once in a lifetime experience, which is worth it if you don't have very high expectations.

camel ride timanfaya national park lanzarote

There is the possibility of riding camels when coming to visit the national park Timanfaya.

Although this is not a tourist activity that we encourage, it is still a popular thing to do for many visitors to the park. It costs around €6 per person to ride a camel and the journey lasts around 20 minutes, while you get to see a bit more of the volcanic landscape.

SEE A LIST OF THE BEST TOURS IN LANZAROTE

Besides the bus visit, there's also the possibility of seeing a bit of the park by going on guided walks with one of the park's rangers.

  • READ MORE: Timanfaya National Park Walks

We have a dedicated article on the topic, where we explain what these routes and how you can book a spot to go on them. Just keep in mind that you need to book months ahead of time since there are very few spots available.

Honestly, for most people coming to Lanzarote, this is not a viable option for seeing Timanfaya National Park, since there are so few places available on these tours.

Also, due to the rugged landscape of the volcanic park, there aren't any places to hide from the sun along the way on these walks, so if you're visiting during the summer, for example, it will be extremely hot and hard to bear the sun and heat during the walk.

volcano timanfaya lanzarote

Is Timanfaya National Park worth it? And is it a good place to visit with kids?

In our opinion, YES it is very much worth a visit and depending on your child's age it will be an interesting place to see.

The landscape inside the park is truly unique and out of this world, formed only by volcanic rocks from the past eruptions, which give you a sense of how the Lanzarote we know today was formed.

Around the area there are several other places to explore if you want to know more about Lanzarote's fiery past:

  • Los Volcanes Natural Park
  • Los Hervideros
  • The lava fields between Los Hervideros and El Golfo
  • Beaches with black volcanic sand and volcanic rocks

One last suggestion for visitors: please don't take any volcanic rocks with you as souvenirs. Keep in mind that they were formed by volcanic eruptions hundreds of years ago and there's no way of creating new rocks, unless a new eruption occurs, which is not something anyone wishes to happen. So be considerate and admire the landscape, but leave it intact for future guests to enjoy it as well.

Is visiting timanfaya worth it.

Yes, absolutely. Imagine 51km2 of protected land covered with lava and volcanic elements in all their shapes and colors. Sure, it’s a popular spot, but it’s worth joining the crowds to discover these unique landscapes! And because the landscapes look like this:

About Timanfaya Lanzarote

  • Timanfaya is a park composed entirely of volcanic soils.
  • The biggest eruptions recorded in the region were the 6 years between 1730 and 1736 – during this period, over 100 volcanoes became active and devastated part of the island.
  • It is one of the main parts of the Lanzarote Biosphere Reserve created by Unesco in 1993.
  • Volcanic activity continues today – you can see the heat just below the crust with the 2 experiences next to the restaurant: the steam geyser and the fire pit.

Access by car

It’s easy to get to the park entrance. The roads are in excellent condition and the scenery is magnificent. You can’t rent the entrance to the park with its large statue (and, depending on the time of day, a queue of cars to enter the park).

It’s another 5-minute drive to the parking lot. It’s not huge, but as the visit doesn’t last very long, the cars often turn around.

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Lanzarote

  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • A small car is all you need.
  • But you can also choose a larger one if you wish, as the parking spaces are rather large.
  • There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early .

Excursions from seaside resorts

If you don’t want to rent a car, there are excursions from all the resorts (Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise) and the cruise terminal.

  • A half-day that only covers the trip to Timanfaya, the fire experience at the restaurant and the park tour by bus – See this option
  • A day that takes you on a more in-depth experience with other interesting stops in Lanzarote – See this option with the green Golfo lagoon and the cliffs of Los Hervideros

How to visit Timanfaya Lanzarote

What to do in Timanfaya

Let’s start with a summary of your options. We present each of them in the next sections of this article:

  • Bus tour – this is the main way to see the park. From the El Diablo restaurant, you can visit a large part of the park by bus. This is included in the admission price.
  • Volcanic restaurant
  • Hiking with a Ranger (other area) – a very limited number of places to take part in small-group visits on special walks in other sections of the park – 3-hour walk and booking is essential.
  • Tourist office (outside the park) – don’t miss the Timanfaya visitor center, which is not located in the restaurant. Further along the road, you can learn more about Lanzarote’s geological history, flora and fauna.
  • Camel ride (outside the park) – Another popular tourist stop is a camel ride. A short walk on one of the volcanoes. We don’t recommend it, but we list it here anyway
  • The road around the park (outside the park)

Timanfaya entrance

Practical information

  • Open from 9 a.m.
  • Price: 12 euros for adults, 6 euros for children aged 7 to 11.
  • Next to the restaurant, you’ll find a souvenir store and toilets.
  • There is no accommodation in the park.

Best time to visit Timanfaya?

If you come by car, you can choose your own time. Avoid the 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. period when all the tour buses arrive. Then, for the best light: morning and afternoon will be interesting. The road swirls around numerous volcanoes, so you have views in all directions. So sometimes you’ll see black shapes because you’re facing the sun, and sometimes you can see colors when the sun is behind you. Ideally, this should be done once in the morning and once in the late afternoon.

1. Timanfaya Bus Tours

The main option for visiting the National Park is to take the bus tour from the El Diablo restaurant. The bus tour leaves regularly. If you’ve come with an excursion, you’ll get back on your bus to tour the park. If you’ve come by car, queue up for the orange bus near the gift store.

Volcanoes of Timanfaya National Park Lanzarote - Bus Tour 4

How long is the bus tour?

Too short – it takes 30 to 40 minutes to do the whole loop – there’s pre-recorded audio in several languages (including French) explaining what you see around you.

Best time to visit Timanfaya bus tour

Which side of the Timanfaya bus do I sit on?

Both sides have interests and you’ll end up standing up and trying to see what’s on the other side. However, as a general rule, the right side (opposite the driver) is a little more interesting for panoramas, especially in 2 places where you’re higher up and it opens onto a vast area.

Volcanoes of Timanfaya National Park Lanzarote - Bus Tour 3

How do I take photos from the Timanfaya bus?

The bus may stop at a few nice places, but you can’t get out (to protect the landscape). So you’ll always have reflections from the windows. To reduce them, place your lens against the window. This limits your angles, but you won’t get strange distortions and glare.

Volcanoes of Timanfaya National Park Lanzarote - Bus Tour 1

The road is narrow, and some people are afraid of heights in certain places… The drivers are very impressive, and we think a tip is deserved if they’ve driven really well.

Photos from the bus

And now, a selection of photos from our bus tour of Timanfaya National Park. It was hard to narrow it down to just a few, but we can’t share them all! Note the different appearance of the lava: sometimes smooth, sometimes with large rocks and sometimes looking like sand. And don’t forget the different colors!

2. Proof of geothermal energy

Right next to the parking lot, there are two demonstrations of heat under the earth’s crust:

  • The funniest part is when they throw water into the hole and it erupts into a steamy geyser.
  • The other is when dry bushland catches fire from geothermal heat.

Timanfaya National Park demonstrations

3. Restaurant El Diablo

Next to the parking lot is the El Diablo restaurant. First of all, the restaurant offers panoramic views of the magnificent park with its volcanoes and all its colors (the wall is covered with windows). The location is exceptional. What’s more, the meat is cooked using geothermal energy. As a result, cooking is not always under control, and some people complain that the meat is too dry.

It’s one of the most original restaurants on Lanzarote, but not the best. See our selection of the best restaurants in Lanzarote .

4. Hiking – Timanfaya National Park (limited access)

If, like us, you plan your trip early enough, you might still be lucky enough to get a place on one of the Timanfaya National Park hikes with the rangers.

How to book a hike

In Timanfaya National Park, you can’t walk alone. In any case, there aren’t many pedestrian zones, because it’s mostly volcanic soil that’s fragile and could break under your weight if there’s a tunnel. It’s dangerous!

Tremesana Timanfaya Lanzarote - How to find us

However, there are a few service roads, where walks are organized with park rangers. There are only a few per week, and groups are limited to 8 people. These tours are free, but you must provide information to obtain a permit and show your passport on the day of the tour.

You can see the different options and book on this website: reservasparquesnacionales.es .

Tips for hiking in Timanfaya

Tremesana Timanfaya Park walking tour 1

We’ve only done the Tremesana hike from Yaiza. Here are a few tips:

  • The walk lasts 3 hours, so bring water, a hat and sunscreen. There’s no shade at all!!!
  • Wear good shoes and, if possible, ankle-high hiking boots. Most of the time, you walk on picon (small volcanic rocks like gravel). So it’s hard on your calves, and small stones tend to get into your shoes. Which is annoying!
  • Don’t bring a tripod. It’s a long walk. There is no real stop. You keep walking, taking short breaks for explanations. No time to set up your tripod.

Tremesana Timanfaya Park walking tour 2

Landscapes of Timanfaya Park – Tremesana Walk

At the start of the tour, we saw historic fig trees that were planted after the eruptions. They were the only trees to survive, and they’re still bearing fruit!

But our favourite part is the second half, more towards the heart of the national park. The landscape is breathtaking, with many different styles of lava and volcanoes. Fascinating to have the ranger’s explanation and to be able to ask lots of questions!

Tremesana Timanfaya Park walking tour 5

5. Route LZ-67 along the park

Even if you don’t enter the park, the road to the east already offers great views. It connects Yaiza to Mancha Blanca. There aren’t many places to park because there’s lava right next to the road. And walking on the road is dangerous because people tend to drive at high speed. However, you can’t really walk on lava either, because it’s sharp and fragile. We recommend driving along the park in both directions. It is beautiful!

LZ-67 road along Timanfaya

6. Timanfaya Visitor Center

Our next stop is the Timanfaya tourist office. Strangely, it’s nowhere near the El Diablo restaurant inside the park. The center is further north on LZ-67. You can’t miss it, it’s well signposted (Centro de Visitantes).

Office du tourisme Timanfaya Visitor Center

We recommend visiting the center during the hottest part of the day. It’s a great way to refresh yourself and learn more about the fascinating world around you.

You have a beautiful small-scale representation of the park and the alignment of volcanoes. Then there are photos and explanations of the region’s geology, history or eruptions and how flora and fauna return after such a cataclysmic event. The screens are in English, Spanish and German.

Office du tourisme Timanfaya Visitor Center museum

They also installed an observation platform at the rear of the building. You can’t see the volcanoes very well, but it’s impressive to be in the middle of a sea of lava.

On-site toilets. Open from 9am to 5pm.

Museum Tourist Office Timanfaya Visitor Center

7. Camel ride at Timanfaya

Finally, another tourist attraction in Timanfaya Lanzarote National Park is the camel ride. The parking lot is on the LZ-67, south of the El Diablo entrance.

We don’t recommend it because it’s sweltering with tourists and doesn’t offer such fantastic views. And the poor camels do it all day long.

But there you go, if it’s something you love:

Camel trekking in Timanfaya Lanzarote

8. Alternative: Los Volcanes Natural Park

Surrounding Timanfaya National Park is the Volcanoes Natural Park (Lanzarote’s, not El Salvador’s). In this area, you can find many other volcanoes that have erupted at different times and can look very different.

The advantage is that access is free, and several walks have been set up for visitors. Among our favorites:

  • Montana Cuervo
  • Montana Colorado
  • Montana Negra
  • Caldera Blanca

See our article on the best hikes in Lanzarote and our article on Lanzarote’s volcanoes .

To enjoy all these magnificent places, you’ll need a car.

Frequently asked questions

Photographing timanfaya.

Because you can only visit the main area in a closed bus, photographing Timanfaya is difficult. Your best option is to book one of the walking tours (but you can’t choose the time and take as long as you like). It will be frustrating, but it’s the best way to protect the landscape.

There is no accommodation in Timanfaya or on the road alongside it. The nearest option is Yaiza. Looking for the best place to stay to visit the island? See our Lanzarote accommodation guide or our article comparing 5-star hotels in Lanzarote

Lanzarote’s landscapes are as imposing as they are unique. Part of this charm is due to the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya, which is the only national park in the Spanish network that is of an eminently geological nature, since it is the result of the volcanic eruptions that took place between 1720 and 1736, and in 1824.

The absence of vegetation, the extreme ruggedness of the terrain, the variety of colours, the silhouettes of the volcanoes and the jagged coastline – all these make Timanfaya extraordinarily beautiful.

Visiting the park. What to do there.

There are various options for discovering and enjoying this protected space, uncovering its surprises little by little. Different facilities and infrastructures are located around the LZ-67, the road that connects the towns of Tinajo and Yaiza, and these are detailed below:

Visitor Centre

timanfaya national park tour bus

Before starting the visit, we advise you to check out the Visitor Centre located in Mancha Blanca, which gives free access to an exhibition and an audiovisual programme offering a complete overview of the Park in several languages.

The Centre is accessible to people with reduced mobility and has a shop/bookshop.

Montañas del Fuego (Mountains of Fire)

timanfaya national park tour bus

In the Montañas del Fuego, visitors can immerse themselves in the world of volcanoes. This area is accessed from Taro de Entrada (on the LZ-67) where the entrance fee is paid ( information on entrance fees ), the price of which includes parking, geothermal demonstrations and a tour of the Ruta de los Volcanes (Volcano Route) by guagua (bus) .

9.00 a.m. to 3.45 p.m.

recommended: 1.00 p.m.

Services and facilities:

  • El Diablo cafeteria-restaurant.
  • Tour by bus (included in the entrance price)

Camel Rides

timanfaya national park tour bus

Continuing on the LZ-67 in the direction of Yaiza, you will find the Echadero de Camellos. This is a place where you can go for a ride on a camel. The Echadero has a Museum – Information Point that offers an exhibition on the National Park, the traditional uses of camels and farming tools. It is accessible for people with reduced mobility. It is open from Monday to Friday, from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.

Ride on a camel. €12 per camel for 2 people.

Walking Routes

timanfaya national park tour bus

You can also enjoy this unique landscape on foot from the following trails:

  • Tremensana Route. This is a guided walk that covers some 2 km, and must be reserved in advance at the Mancha Blanca Visitor Centre. +34 928849839
  • Coastal Route. This can either be a guided walk reserved in advance like the previous route, or can be covered independently. The path goes through public land parallel to the coast.

** We recommend you to confirm the opening hours of the Visitor Center and Fire Mountains on the date of your visit, on the official websites, since these may be affected depending on the restrictions of access or season.

Look out for:

Lichens. These are unique protagonists in the inhospitable volcanic surface where they survive under the battering of the Trade Winds.

Volcanic cones. The most iconic are: Montaña de Timanfaya, Montaña Rajada, Caldera del Corazoncillo, Volcán Nuevo del Fuego or El Chinero and the Calderas Quemadas.

Inside the boundaries of the Park is one of the stations of the Laboratorio Geodinámico de Lanzarote, Lanzarote’s Geodynamics Lab.

The tourist facilities designed by César Manrique are a delight to the eye of the visitor.

The vestiges of the past make themselves felt today through the temperatures that reach 100-120ºC in the ground.

Advice and Safety

Visiting the Park requires respect for the peace and tranquility and the conservation of the environment. For this reason it is important not to disturb the animals , and also pulling up, gathering or extracting plants and minerals is forbidden, as well as altering any other natural element.

We would be grateful if, as far as possible, you could return waste to the populated areas , thus limiting the use of bins, and never leave or throw waste outside the collection areas.

Likewise, you cannot drive vehicles outside the asphalted areas open to the public . It is not possible to walk over the lava or on other volcanic material.

We would be grateful if between us all we could contribute to preserving this unique environment.

Description of this tour

Lanzarote is built on fire and lava.

On this tour you will discover the area destroyed by the volcanoes of the eighteenth century, and one of the main natural attractions of the island, the Timanfaya National Park. We also visit the volcano El Golfo with the green Lagoon, The cliffs Hervideros, Salinas de Janubio, Camel park and the wine region of La Geria.

In the Hilario Islet, already in the Timanfaya National Park, we will appreciate with three demonstrations  the high temperatures that are still recorded in the shallow earth to the geothermal anomalies of the zone. You can see how the heat of the earth is used for cooking and enjoy the views from the windows of the Restaurant El Diablo, a work of Cesar Manrique. It will be from the Islet of Hilario, from where we will leave by bus to make the impressive Route of the Volcanoes that takes us through the most protected area of the national park.

"Half the beauty depends on the landscape and the other half of the man who looks at it" (Lin Yutanq)

During the excursion we also visit the coast of Timanfaya making a first photographic stop in Los Hervideros, cliffs where the sea crashes hard creating a visual spectacle of great beauty and a second stop by the volcano El Golfo, one of the most beautiful volcanoes in the Canary Islands, to enjoy the views over the green lagoon or Charco de los Clicos.

On the way to La Geria, we will enjoy a panoramic view of the Salinas de Janubio, from the beginning of the 19th century, considered the most important salt pans of the Canaries. In La Geria, you can appreciate the vines cultures and taste the Lanzarote wine.

During the excursion you will have the opportunity to do the typical camel ride.

Went on the south tour of the island and everything was excellent

Nice and enjoyable tour.

I really enjoyed the excursion, all the places we visited were interesting. Eric was very nice and he knows everything about Lanzarote. Good value for the money!

Both the tours we took with you were fabulous. Everthing, from pick up to drop off was faultless. Guides were informative. Lunch on both days was teally enjoyable.

Trip was good, but the lunch need to be improved for sure! Wish the ground tour operated more frequency rather than south tour. the tour guide lady took care of me very well since I was the only japanese in the tour. hope to join other tour in your company next time when I visit Lanzarote!!

Great tour. Lovely guide.

Tour guide was very helpful. Overall experience was excellent and would definitely book again

Service: Excursion South Tour 08/06/2015 The excursion was well-organized, attractive, informative with no hurry. I saw unusual, breathtaking, beautiful landscapes, learnt much about the volcanos and people of Lanzarote, their life and I spent enough time on all sites. The guide was brilliant! Enormous knowledge, fluent in 3 languages, helpful, smiling. I disliked only the crowd at the presentation of the "geyser", we stood in three row around it. I suggest performing it in two parts for the group. I enjoyed the whole excursion very much. Kind regards, Miklos Lantos Budapest

Wine in the food was terribly bad.

Eric, the guide was very good on both the trips we went on

FAQs about Timanfaya tours

Booking with Oklanzarote.com comes with these benefits:

  • You can avoid the long queues to access the Timanfaya National Park.
  • We offer pick-ups at or near your accommodation.
  • If you do our bus excursions, you won’t have to take or wait for the park bus to do the volcano route.
  • We offer several excursions with different route combinations so that you can choose the one that suits you best.
  • In Oklanzarote you’ll find the complete information for each tour.
  • We guarantee a personalized treatment. You can contact us every day of the year from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The camel ride is optional in almost all the Timanfaya tours. Please read each route’s information carefully to find out if the camel riding option is included in the excursion.

The best option is to wear closed shoes and comfortable clothing.

You can visit the Park on your own or on an organized tour. The National Park is in the southwest center of Lanzarote and extends for more than 51 square km, although the park visit really focuses on the Islote de Hilario, the camel ride and the volcano route.

The Timanfaya excursions differ due to the other sites you’ll visit, along with the park. Also, you should check if it offers to option of riding a camel on the route since, even though it’s optional, not all tours stop to do this activity. In any case, look for the other points of interest, in addition to Timanfaya, that you want to visit on your excursion, these may include Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes, Charco de los Clicos, La Geria, Los Hervideros or Las Salinas.

The great advantage over self-guided excursions is that in the organized ones you don’t have to wait in the long queues, which can last for up to 3 hours, to enter the park or to take the bus to do the “volcano route”. In addition, the organized visits offer an official guide who will give you information throughout the park route and in Lanzarote. You’ll only have to worry about being at the meeting point at the agreed time. And if you also intend to visit other places such as the Jameos del Agua or the Cueva de los Verdes, you won’t have to queue at the entrance to visit these tourist centers either.

The time from when we enter the National Park to when we leave is approximately 1.5 hours, and this includes the time to see the experiments, do the Volcano Route, enjoy the Islote de Hilario views and visit The Devil’s Restaurant. If you do the tour with the camel ride, you should add another 30-50 minutes to the itinerary.

Timanfaya National Park

Spanning just over 50 square kilometres across southwest Lanzarote is Timanfaya National Park , a Mars-like landscape of volcanoes in a sea of lava .

Lanzarote's impressive national park is a vast sea of lava dotted with dormant volcanoes and fascinating rock formations. Its name, Timanfaya, meaning Fire Mountains, is a reference to the volcanic eruptions that devastated the island for six long years from 1730 . This destructive period of history created one of the most spectacular landscapes on Lanzarote.

Timanfaya National Park gives visitors a  unique insight into the world of volcanoes . You'll feel like you're exploring Mars as you discover the craters and peaks of this dramatic landscape .

What to see in Timanfaya National Park

Islote de hilario.

Head to this area of the park to watch  demonstrations of its continued volcanic activity . Experience the immense geothermal   energy hidden under the surface of the earth as you watch  water poured on the ground turn into a powerful geyser !

Volcano Route

Entrance to the park includes a tour by guagua (bus) of the  Volcano Route . This 13-kilometre trip takes you deep into the mountains, learning all about the history and geology of the national park while marvelling at its spectacular volcanic landscapes .

During the bus ride, the windows will become the best frame to enjoy the works of art created by the volcanoes. If you want to get the best views, we believe that the seats on the right side are the best option.

El Diablo Restaurant

With an incomparable location on the top of the Islote de Hilario mountain, the El Diablo Restaurant is not only one of César Manrique 's most emblematic works , it's also a great place to enjoy traditional Canarian food with a special touch.

The restaurant's most striking detail is that the food is cooked by geothermal heat on a huge cast-iron grill placed over a hole in the ground! The dining room boasts a large window offering unparalleled views of the Fire Mountains - the ideal setting to taste volcano-cooked Canarian delicacies.

Lanzarote is a land of volcanoes and there's no better way to immerse yourself in their importance to the island than by discovering the Fire Mountains. Timanfaya National Park welcomes more than one and a half million visitors every year, who come to explore its other-worldly scenery.

Next to the park, you'll find the Echadero de los Camellos , a popular attraction where you can enjoy a 25 minute camel ride for a different experience of the volcanic landscapes.

How to get to Timanfaya National Park

There are two ways to get to Timanfaya National Park : by car or with an organised tour. If you're renting a car in Lanzarote , you'll find the roads well signposted and you can park at Islote de Hilario, next to the El Diablo Restaurant and the park's other main attractions. To explore the rest of the park, you catch a guagua, or tour bus, from here.

Timanfaya  is a very popular place to visit, and you may find long queues to enter the park, especially during high season. The least crowded times are usually early in the morning or at lunchtime.

One of the best Timanfaya tours is this excursion , which includes admission to Timanfaya National Park and a visit to the Cueva de los Verdes and the Jameos del Agua .

This Lanzarote volcano trip includes hotel pick-up and bus transportation to Timanfaya National Park. There, you’ll do the Route of the Volcanoes and witness the incredible landscapes of the Fire Mountains (Montañas del Fuego). Cueva de los Verdes, lanzarote trips to volcano

Your Timanfaya National Park tour continues with a visit to the Cueva de los Verdes , one of the most famous attractions on Lanzarote. This natural cave formed after the land was upturned during an eruption, and it’s one of my favorite places on the island because it’s so unique.

The last stop is the Jameos del Agua , another area that was shaped by volcanic lava and debris. Keep your eyes peeled for tiny white crabs, an endemic species in Lanzarote. Also, this site is home to a series of gardens designed by César Manrique , the most pivotal artist from the Canary Islands.

  • Highlights : Route of the Volcanoes, Cueva de los Verdes, Jameos del Agua

4. Timanfaya & Jameos del Agua trip with wine tasting

Another great volcano tour in Lanzarote is this full-day excursion that takes you to several popular attractions and a wine tasting.

This Timanfaya tour begins with a stop in Yaiza , a picturesque town overlooking the mountains and its volcanoes. While you’re here, don’t miss the opportunity to try a traditional Lanzarote drink of coffee with milk.

Afterward, immerse yourself in the landscape of Lanzarote’s west coast. This excursion to Timanfaya includes stops at Los Hervideros, Charco de Los Clicos, and El Golfo. The landscapes of each of these places are spectacular, and your tour guide will tell you all about the volcanic formations. Once in Timanfaya National Park, take the Route of the Volcanoes bus ride before ending up at the Visitor Center, where you’ll see some interesting demonstrations.

Jameos del Agua, volcano tours lanzarote

The day trip continues with a visit to Mancha Blanca , another charming Lanzarote town that’s known for its Canarian architecture, specifically its church. Then, continue through the wine region of La Geria , where you’ll learn about the local methods used to cultivate wine in the volcanic soil. Of course, you’ll get to taste some of the best wines in the area.

The last leg of this Lanzarote volcano tour ends with amazing views of the Valley of 1,000 Palms , one of the highest viewpoints on the island. You’ll also see one of the most beautiful spots in Lanzarote, the Jameos del Agua , an underground tunnel formed by ancient volcanic eruptions.

  • Highlights : Yaiza, Timanfaya, Mancha Blanca, La Geria, Valley of 1,000 Palms, Jameos del Agua
  • Duration : 10 hours
  • Price from : €56
  • Departs from : Costa Teguise, Arrecife, Puerto del Carmen, Puerto Calero, Yaiza, and Playa Blanca
  • Description : This tour includes admission to Timanfaya National Park, the Jameos del Agua, and pick-up/drop-off service. You’ll be led by a professional tour guide and enjoy a wine tasting. The tour doesn’t include Timanfaya camel rides.

5. Timanfaya volcano tour from Fuerteventura

If you’re visiting Fuerteventura, I recommend taking this one-day tour to explore Lanzarote and discover its volcanic landscape. This excursion to Timanfaya includes a wine tasting in the wine region of La Geria, as well as a stop at Charcos de Los Clicos.

After getting picked up from your hotel, you’ll travel to the Port of Corralejo. From there, board the express ferry to Playa Blanca , a town on the coast of Lanzarote and the starting point for this Lanzarote volcano bus tour .

Route of the Volcanoes, volcano lanzarote tour

The first site you’ll visit is Timanfaya National Park, home to a unique volcanic environment and lots of geothermal activity. Your Lanzarote volcano tour continues to La Geria , where you’ll learn about the island’s extraordinary wine production process. Also, you can sample some delicious local wines while admiring the ash-covered vineyards.

Next, check out the southern coast of Lanzarote and see the Charco de Los Clicos and its dreamy cliffs. Finally, you’ll take the ferry from Playa Blanca back to the island of Fuerteventura.

  • Highlights : Timanfaya National Park, La Geria, Charco de Los Clicos
  • Departs from : Fuerteventura (Corralejo, Castillo/Caleta de Fuste)
  • Description : The tour includes admission to Timanfaya National Park and a wine tasting. Enjoy pick-up service and a round-trip ferry from Fuerteventura to Lanzarote.

6. Camel ride, one of the most popular Timanfaya tours

Although this particular excursion in Timanfaya is very popular, I don’t recommend it. Personally, I think you can enjoy all that Timanfaya National Park has to offer without doing this type of tour.

We visited the park and took the Timanfaya tour by bus, along the Route of the Volcanoes. This allowed us to go further into the park and see a wider variety of incredible landscapes. Best of all, we didn’t have to disturb any animals.

Echadero de Camellos, lanzarote volcano tour

If you still want to do this Timanfaya camel tour, this camel ride follows an authorized footpath where you can appreciate Lanzarote’s volcanic environment. The tour has a pick-up service that can collect you from your hotel and transport you to the Echadero de Camellos . The camel ride itself lasts 25 minutes.

Also, this tour ends with a stop at a small museum in Timanfaya, where you’ll learn about the camels and how they’re able to withstand the high desert temperatures.

  • Highlights : Timanfaya National Park
  • Duration : 30 minutes
  • Price from : €23
  • Departs from : Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise, and Arrecife
  • Description : This tour includes hotel pick-up and drop-off along with a 25-minute camel ride.

That’s it for these Lanzarote volcano tours ! I hope this guide helps you decide which tour to take, but if you have any questions, feel free to leave me a comment below. I’ll be happy to help you out. Until then, enjoy your tour through Timanfaya National Park!

HOW TO VISIT TIMANFAYA NATIONAL PARK? IS BOOKING REQUIRED TO VISIT TIMANFAYA? HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO VISIT TIMANFAYA IN LANZAROTE?

Lanzarote is full of amazing things to do. But one of them is particularly impressive and unique: Timanfaya National Park . The park is also called Las Montañas del Fuego, the mountains of fire .

These lunar landscapes, somewhat surreal, are those that we see everywhere when we prospect for a trip to Lanzarote (postcards, flyers, documentaries, YouTube videos…). T

he beauty of the landscape is striking and the volcanic area stretches for miles, reflecting a wide spectrum of colors depending on the time of day or the weather.

ULTIMATE GUIDE TO TIMANFAYA NATIONAL PARK

Timanfaya National Park

In this post, we explain all you need to know to prepare for your trip to Timanfaya National Park, one of the must-sees in Lanzarote.

Here is a glimpse of what to expect during a visit at Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote:

By the way, we have a full post about Lanzarote here if you want to know the 25 best things to do on the island.

Impressive facts about Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote

Timanfaya National Park

Lanzarote is a unique island in the Canaries as 3/4 is covered with lava . It has no less than 300 craters belonging to 100 volcanoes. Timanfaya National Park is one of the main area to see those volcanic activities.

The major eruptions started in 1730 and lasted 6 years (last eruption on the island in 1824)! It is one of the areas in the world that has experienced the largest and most recent eruptions in the history of volcanism: a must-see for nature and volcano lovers.

The national park is located in the southwest of the island and has an area of 51 km²! Timanfaya National Park is one of the main parts of the Lanzarote Biosphere Reserve created by Unesco in 1993.

Volcanic activity continues today – you can experience the heat of the ground next to El Diable Restaurant: the steam geyser and the fire pit. (We will explain you more about it later in this post).

What to do and see in Timanfaya National Park?

1. timanfaya visitors center.

Timanfaya National Park

Before of after setting out to explore the Fire Mountains, we advise you to stop at the Timanfaya visitors center . This center built in the middle of a lava field is open every day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (and the entrance is free!!).

You will be able to discover how the Canary Islands appeared and learn more about volcanism. Every hour an earthquake simulation with eruption is scheduled inside.

There is also a nice footbridge behind the building providing access to the lava field and a first look at Timanfaya National Park.

Location: here

2. MONTANAS DEL FUEGO

Lanzarote

Montañas del Fuego (mountains of fire) is the main attraction at Timanfaya National Park . It is there that you can still experience volcanic activity. Access to this exceptional site is regulated and limited in order to preserve it.

The park is totally forbidden to access on foot or by car. The only way to visit it is by entering a regulated and paying access (12 € per person) and drive all the way to El Diablo restaurant ( here ).

Once you park your car, head towards the bus tour. You may need to wait for 15 minutes as they wait until the bus is full to travel inside Timanfaya National Park. The bus tour is free , you only need to pay for the first entrance when entering the car park . The tour lasts for about 45 minutes . Make sure to take a window seat inside the bus to take pictures.

Unfortunately, it’s not allowed to get off the bus to take photos. All photos are taken from the bus (which is not ideal…). The bus takes you back at the main area after the tour is done.

Our advice: as this is the main attraction of Lanzarote, it can get very crowded. The parking space is very limited, there is a long queue of cars waiting to park. We went there at 10 am and it wasn’t that bad, but on our way down at around noon, the queue was huge. So better be early.

Also, the day before we tried to go there in the afternoon at around 3pm, but they told us it was full for the day. So we couldn’t go in the afternoon. Conclusion: go as early as you can in the morning!

3. STEAM GEYSER AT TIMANFAYA NATIONAL PARK

Lanzarote

At the end of your bus tour, don’t miss the few demonstrations right in front of El Diablo Restaurants. In the first one you can see an enormous geyser.

One of the ranger from Timanfaya National Park pours some water in a hole in the ground. 2 or 3 seconds later, under the effect of the intense heat, the water comes out in a powerful and loud geyser . Very impressive!

5. THE FIRE EXPERIENCE IN THE GROUND

Timanfaya National Park

First, with the help of a shovel, an employee stirs up the earth and picks up a few pebbles which he passes to tourists. The pebbles are so hot that it’s almost impossible to keep them in your hand. It is then that you realize how hot is the ground.

Second, in a hole in the ground a ranger from the park, put some dry grass inside, which instantly ignite in fire!

6. EL DIABLO RESTAURANT

Timanfaya National Park

Before leaving, visit El Diablo Restaurant. This restaurant has the particularity of serving chicken and potatoes cooked thanks to “the heat of the volcano”. Yes, just a few centimeters from the ground the temperature reaches 150°C !

If you are there around noon, it would be a good idea to have your lunch at El Diablo. It’s a unique experience. This place has been designed by the renowned Cesar Manrique (we explain more about his work in this post ).

7. GO FOR A CAMEL RIDE

Lanzarote

For your next experience, you will need to drive a few minutes away from El Diablo south. On the main road, you will see hundreds of Camel waiting. You can’t miss it.

From there you can ride a camel for about 20min and experience the moonscape . It costs 12 € per person . If you’ve never been on a Camel before then we recommend experiencing it at least once in your life. It’s super fun, although very scary when they stand up.

If you do not want to ride a Camel, you can still stop there and take some photos. It’s also a nice part of the park.

8. HIKE AROUND TIMANFAYA NATIONAL PARK

Timanfaya National Park

Although it is not possible to hike directly inside Timanfaya National Park there are 2 interesting hikes around the park to see some great volcanoes.

Near La Geria a short walk brings you to one of the oldest craters. The starting point is the LZ-56, “Ruta Nacional de las Volcanos” between Nigeria and La Mancha Blanca. At the sign “Municipio de Tias” (after 1 km coming from La Geria), leave the car and follow the path to the nearest volcano (on the left side of the road, coming from La Geria).

Arrived at the volcano, you go to the right and after 200 meters you can continue to the crater of the El Cuelvo volcano. You can also walk around the volcano. This hike is only 1.5 kilometers long and almost completely flat.

A second walk can be done in the neighborhood of La Mancha Blanca . You leave the car in the village and take the LZ-67 towards Timanfaya. After a hundred meters, where the path turns a little to the left, there are two secondary roads. The older one returns to the village; the other, the unpaved path, goes straight to the Caldera de Montana Blanca, one of the oldest craters

Finally, you can also choose a guided hike, a very famous one is the Tremesana Route from Yaiza. However, you need to book in advance here .

Things to know for your visit to Timanfaya National Park

  • Estimated duration: 2 hours (excluding lunch at El Diablo)
  • Price : 12 euros for Adults, 6 euros for Children 7-12 years old (accessible with the Lanzarote Pass: 6 sites for 30 euros)
  • Hours : Daily 9:00 a.m. – 5:45 p.m. Last visit Route des Volcans: 5:00 p.m.
  • Restaurant El Diablo : 12:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

What we liked:

  • Informative commentary
  • A unique landscape: lava flows, stretches of ash, open craters, crevasses…
  • A pretty road winding through the lava
  • Demonstrations at the end of the visit

What we liked less:

  • The tour only allows to see a small part of the Mountains of Fire
  • Difficult to take pictures because of the windows of the bus
  • Unable to walk inside the park

Join a tour to visit Timanfaya

Timanfaya National Park

If you didn’t rent a car in Lanzarote, no worries, you can join many different tour groups for a day trip to Timanfaya National Park which is usually combined with other things to see in the island.

Booking a tour for Timanfaya is actually not a bad idea as you will skip the queue at the entrance. The tour bus can enter directly inside the park and drive around the Montañas del Fuego right away (also no waiting time).

Indeed, it did not disappoint and they were all right. It does feel that we are on another planet, somewhere on Mars or on the Moon. It is very unique and a great visit overall. We especially liked the demonstration with the geyser at the end.

Having visited the volcano restaurant today, I thought I’d take a look at the website when I returned. I was shocked to see that the price to enter was €9 each. I was charged €24. €12 each for me and wife. We did not receive a ticket so could not check it with anyone. Has the price changed or have I been over charged? We really enjoyed the visit but this has tarnished the visit slightly.

Hi Mark, Thanks for the comment, it seems that 12 EUR is the correct price now. We went there earlier this year, and it was still the old price, which seemed to have changed since then. We will update our post as well…

Our Big Journey

Visit Timanfaya National Park (on foot!) | Exploring Lanzarote 🌋

timanfaya national park tour bus

By Roberto (Updated Nov 22)

Did you know that you can visit Timanfaya National Park on foot for free ? Not many people know this and neither did we before visiting Lanzarote . We will explain here what steps to follow and before you ask… yes, we do recommend doing the visit if you have some extra time .

Table of Contents

A bit of info about Timanfaya National Park

In Spain , there are more than 100 natural protected areas, and only the best or most special make it to the “Hall of Fame”, considered National Parks. Thanks to its biodiversity, mystical terrain and special interest, Timanfaya National Park is one of the 16 Natural Parks in Spain , since 1974.

timanfaya national park tour bus

The scenery in Timanfaya literally looks like the moon, originated from volcanic eruptions. Strange rocks and lava formations welcome you with red and orange colours. Honestly, it’s a place you’ll remember for being SO unique.

The typical tour to Timanfaya

Almost everyone who visits Lanzarote visit Timanfaya, and they do it with the tour bus. Years ago, it was possible to visit it with private agencies, but not anymore. So, the only way to visit and explore the Park is by bus through the Ruta de los Volcanes (the Route of the Volcanoes).

The route around volcanoes, costs 12 € per person (6 € for kids) and includes the entrance to the park, the bus drive, around 30 minutes, and some short exhibitions with heat. It’s so important to mention that you cannot leave the bus , so all the visit is from inside and you see everything seated… At least the buses are well organised, with information in Spanish, English and German in the 5-6 stops they make.

timanfaya national park tour bus

There are tours with buses every 15 minutes, from 9 am to 5:45 pm (until 6:45 pm 1st July – 30th September). We absolutely recommend avoiding going to the centre from 11 am to 3 pm , because the line of cars at the entrance of the parking is freaking long. We went around 4:30 pm in Easter Week and had 0 problems.

timanfaya national park tour bus

How to visit Timanfaya by foot?

The interesting thing is that there is ANOTHER WAY to explore Timanfaya , and it’s completely free . The government has a website for all the Natural Parks, and provides cultural walks in some of them.

For Timanfaya National Park, they offer one guided tour along the coast and another inside Timanfaya, called, Tremesana Route from Yaiza . In the excursion, they pick you up from Yaiza (a nearby town) with a mini bus, and drive you to protected areas of the park. Once there, you walk for 3 km while receiving awesome explanations from the guides (they are biologists) and they answer all types of questions.

timanfaya national park tour bus

They offer one group in Spanish and another in English , each day. But only one tour per day! Thus, making a reservation is the most important . Access to the official website below:

timanfaya national park tour bus

With permission of the website, this is what they say about the route in Timanfaya:

Due to  SECURITY AND QUALITY  reasons of this SERVICE,  VISITORS WHO DON ´T  UNDERSTAND  the LANGUAGE of the BOOKED GROUP,  WON´T BE A DMITED .

SERVICE WITH GUIDE ONLY IN ENGLISH.

1.- Free guided walking tour service, previous booking, maximum 1 month ahead to the wanted date.

2.- Small groups (maximum 8 people);  it is required to speak the language in which the service is offered.

3.-  Meeting point: PLAZA DE LOS REMEDIOS S/N, YAIZA. 15 minutes before the reserved time .

4.- Tour length: 3 k. Length: 3 hours (approximately). Difficulty: minimum.

5.- this service is offered  for adults over “16 YEARS OLD” .

6.-  Mandatory CLOSED FOOTWEAR , no high heeled, suitable for uneven ground. Failure to comply the requirements may result in the cancelation of the reservations.

7.- It’s recommended to wear: comfortable clothing, water, sun cream protection, cap or hat.

8.- Submit ID or the document proving the identity of all the attendants of the walk, as well as the “permit number” generated by the booking system.

9.- This service  may be cancelled due to  force majeure or weather alert by adverse events (Yellow, Orange or Red Alert).

10.-  PLEASE BE PUNCTUAL.

Important things to know about the walk to Timanfaya

Hence, the only important things you need to do are: register in the official website for your language, be on time, and bring walking shoes.

It’s so important to be registered and they don’t make exceptions because there is a max of 8 people in the group. Even for us, Ellen couldn’t make it because we only found one free spot to do it! In case you want to take the risk without a reservation, almost everyday, people who registered don’t go… Since it’s free, dumb people register and if they have another plan, simply don’t go, and f*ck the others.

timanfaya national park tour bus

Is the experience worth it?

In my view, 100% yes . But it’s not for everyone. You’ll love it in case you are a curious person, and have around 4 hours to spend. The only drawback I found was that the walking has too many stops and you don’t walk too much, and there is no toilet for 3 hours…

In case you only have time for one tour, between the bus or the walk, I’d do… I don’t know. 😅 I think the bus shows you the most impressive things with nice lookouts and a general view of the volcanoes. But the walk immerses you in the park, you can touch some rocks and even go in a lava cave . In addition, the explanation of the guides give you lots of information and stories.

Timanfaya National Park, Lanzarote

A visit to the Timanfaya National Park is a must for every visitor to Lanzarote. The spectacular volcanic landscape, that covers a quarter of the island, was created over six years of near-continuous volcanic eruptions that took place between 1730 and 1736, with a smaller episode in 1824. The scale of the eruptions was enormous, with an estimated 2,000,000,000m 3 of lava spewed out from more than 100 volcanoes onto previously-fertile land and villages, as well as reclaiming some new land from the sea. Although the majority of the eruptions took place nearly 300 years ago, Lanzarote’s dry climate means that the Volcanic landscape is relatively unchanged since that time.

Though there were no recorded deaths attributed to the eruptions, it is estimated that more than 44% of the island’s population emigrated during those years, and there are many accounts of livestock being killed by poisonous gases. Yaiza’s parish priest left a written account describing the destruction of villages, terrifying earthquakes, mountains rising up overnight, explosions and raining hot ash. When the eruption finally ended, much of Lanzarote’s most arable land was lost forever under a thick crust of basalt, though in La Geria, the locals soon invented a new form of agriculture, by digging pits in the volcanic ash, allowing vine roots to reach the fertile soil buried underneath.

Islote de Hilario

The main Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains) Centre at Islote de Hilario offers visitors the chance to experience first-hand the geothermal anomalies present in the area (thought to be caused by a Magma intrusion under the island). Although volcanically dormant, temperatures of up to 610°C have been recorded at a depth of 13 metres, and up to 277°C at just 10cm! Visitors get to witness demonstrations of this intense heat as straw auto-ignites after being dropped into a shallow pit, steam gushes out of the ground moments after being pored into a hole as cold water, and the gravel under your feet is hot enough to burn your hand!

Camel in Lanzarote

The cleverly-designed El Diablo restaurant utilises this geothermal heat for cooking by placing a large grill over a deep pit. This pit serves a dual-purpose since it was originally created to ventilate conducted heat from the restaurant’s foundations.

While visitors are not allowed to roam freely around, they do get to view the park from one of the coaches that carefully threads its way around the ‘Ruta de los Volcanes’ – a narrow road, closed to normal traffic, that snakes through the most spectacular areas of the National Park. This short coach trip around the park is included in the entry fee, and, notwithstanding the somewhat dated audio commentary and music, shouldn’t be missed.

How to get to Timanfaya

Since there is no public bus to the Timanfaya National Park, you will either need to hire a car or visit as part of an organised coach tour. The Grand Tour of Lanzarote and the Lanzarote South Tour both visit the park as part of their itinerary and include the entrance fee in their ticket price.

You wouldn’t want to be bitten by one!

You’re rigth, Bart.

I’m planning to spend a couple of days hiking on the island. No camel ride for me, after looking at the picture on this blog. Supporting animal abuse is not my thing.

With others I plan to visit your national park on our weeks holiday from 26 of January. We will have hired a car and be based in a large town on the south of your island.I would be grateful for advice regarding a visit on 29th or 30th of January with special interest is seeing the geological/ volcanic tunnel. Thanks, John Dillon [email protected]

What tours do anyone recommend for Lanzarote when visiting? We’d like to visit Timanfaya and also rancho Texas

It’s much cheaper to hire a car and go on a lot of these trips yourself. For timanfaya you park up, then pay for the bus tour around the lunar landscape. Definitely a great thing to see. The chicken cooked over the volcanic vent was delicious in the restaurant. Jan 19. Ms.

Is it allowed to take some volcanic rock back to England as a souvenir

administrator

No – definitely not!

I wouldn’t pick it up from the national park as it’s protected, but you can buy all sorts of souvenirs made from it and it’s generally all over the island, including every flower bed

Sheila Ward

I am trying to book to join the guided walk in the Timanfaya National Park. Today I went on their site to book for a month today, and though the calendar showed places available, the words said that there were none. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Is there any hiking trails marked in Timanfaya NP?

Hi, It is my understanding that only the coastal route is open to hikers, otherwise there are a two routes where you must be led by an official guide from the park. Our tour guide to the National park told us that the Camels are treated very well. They only “work” every 2nd day and are fed well. They used to be mistreated but are now protected.

It is just so so sad to see the camels with an iron mask and used as transportation for tourist. We have seen a long queue with camels and tourist, not so nice – poor animals and it is just so commercial. If you really want to go I would recommend a guided trekking tour or by car.

This will be my fifth visit to Lanzarote and I’ve always wanted to go to the Timanfaya National Park but I’ve never been so I really must go. However, I’m not happy seeing camels in iron masks. As far as I’m concerned, it’s animal abuse and I can’t support that, so it’ll have to be the bus tour for us.

Cliff Taylor

I hope you still have the crazy tour operator that is honest with the passengers when he says that the bus driver has an artificial leg and sometimes it comes loose while braking.

Thanks for waiting for me at your favourite winery…I almost bought their entire stock until I spoke to you.

Bert Kamphuis

All those people feeling sorry for those poor camels! Come on please! The whole middle east and south Asia is full of camels that work for local people and tourists as well. They are treated a lot worse than the ones you see on Lanzarote. What about people on donkeys, or even on horses? Must that be forbidden as well?

So glad to hear from an expert on animal abuse. Nothing to worry about here. Look there. It’s worse. Get real Bert!
