'Timecrafters: The Treasure of Pirate's Cove' has kids finding adventure with ancient treasure map

HOLLYWOOD -- There's a new movie for kids heading into the world. It involves adventure, mystery, time travel...and pirates!

Patrick Muldoon thought it'd be fun to be involved with a film his niece and his nephew could enjoy. It's called "Timecrafters: The Treasure of Pirate's Cove."

"That pirate grit is really rough, especially when they don't want anyone to recognize that it's you," said Muldoon.

"Timecrafters: The Treasure of Pirate's Cove" is about some kids from who find an ancient treasure map and go on a search for gold! The map showed up in Pirate's Cove along with some pirates who were thrown into a vortex...and traveled 300 years through time. At stake...the lost treasure of Captain Kidd.

"These are adventurous kids and the plot is complex. What I go through in the movie as daddy, who's a scientist, you know, is complex. I'm gone for a year. They think that I'm lost at sea and I'm actually on the other side of time trying to get back. And actually, I've become a pirate because I'm swashbuckling back in time trying to get back to my family," said Muldoon.

"Timecrafters: The Treasure of Pirate's Cove" also stars Denise Richards and Eric Balfour. It'll be released on digital and on demand on Friday.

There are pirates, swashbuckling, and treasure hunting, but the violence is cartoonish. Punches and swords are never shown landing, and there's no blood or gore. There are a few spooky atmospheres and a skeleton in a cage. A couple giggles and briefly caresses a couple of times. Strong language is one use of "dammit" and a couple of "diddlypoop." Twinkies feature prominently in a few shots. Alcohol use is implied by a rolling bottle and assuming some adults passed out from drinking (they didn't), and one sip from a wine glass. A negative character holds and chomps a large cigar. Parental loss is a theme from a modern-day father lost at sea and in the past a boy watches as his father is pushed from a ship's plank. The supporting cast is diverse but main characters are all White. There's also some stereotyping in the nerdy Asian kid, the fat kid who's always eating, and the girl who's really into social media. Mellow and unintense

What's the story.

TIMECRAFTERS: THE TREASURE OF PIRATE'S COVE is the story of how Josh ( Casey Simpson ) and his friends find a pirate's treasure map while beachcombing one day. Little could they imagine that the very same day, a group of pirates from the 18th century wash up on the same shore, and they're after the very same map. Pirate Geoffrey Pistol ( Eric Balfour ) is convinced the map will lead to the infamous Captain Kidd's lost treasure. Hot on Pistol's heels is the vengeful Captain Lynch ( Malcolm McDowell ), who was betrayed by Pistol and will stop at nothing to get the treasure himself.

Is It Any Good?

This time-travelling pirate story will be fun for tweens, but it's got some problems that are likely to keep teens and adults from truly enjoying it. Of course, Timecrafters: The Treasure of Pirate's Cove has swashbuckling swordfights, cannons blazing, and four kids who find a treasure map and manage to stay one step ahead of the pirates at every turn. The adult actors are a bit uneven, but the supporting cast is solid and provides some fun comic relief. Veteran actor Malcolm McDowell seems to be having fun as a revenge-seeking, evil pirate captain.

The script is weak, often stating the obvious (again) instead of advancing the story or action. There are too many subplots (most of them cliches) to make it easy for little kids to follow. And there are a few plot holes and a continuity problem or two that teens and adults will see right through. Think of it as a low-budget The Goonies . Still, for the right age group it's not terrible, and with fewer content concerns than the '80s classic, it's a viable candidate for a sleepover night.

Time travel was the logical next step in sci-fi legend Terry Gilliam’s career.

After attending college in Los Angeles, Terry Gilliam moved to New York in the early 1960s, where he helped to run an underfunded satire magazine called Help! The magazine had a feature that turned real people into cartoons, where they would design a cartoon strip and hire real actors to play the roles. When trying to find comic actors who were game, he met John Cleese and Graham Chapman.

That story, recounted by Gilliam to David Letterman in 1982 during an interview promoting Time Bandits , is not how Monty Python formed, but it’s close enough. At its peak, Python sketches and movies bounced with the surprise and joy of a Sunday newspaper strip. But when the working conditions of Python deteriorated, Gilliam took that style and crafted something of his own.

Time Bandits was his third directorial credit, but in many ways, it’s also the debut of Gilliam’s style. That style entails large, elaborate set pieces; a strong distrust in authority; an overwhelming belief in the power of imagination; and some pretty good jokes along the way. Gilliam has framed Time Bandits as his exploration of a child’s imagination, which can be far darker than what we usually see in movies and TV.

Time-jumping is a natural structure for sketch comedians looking to make full-length pictures, be they the members of Monty Python, Mel Brooks, or the writers of Bill & Ted (who first came up with their idea while doing stand-up). It’s easy to slaughter sacred cows when wearing a toga or a crown because modern people don’t actually know what history was like.

Maybe it was more like this than you realize, Brooks would argue in History of the World Part One . Gilliam did the same in his first co-directed movie, Monty Python and the Holy Grail . Once a time period has been exhausted, the players can simply move on to the next one, as seen in the end of Holy Grail , when modern-day police come and arrest everyone present.

With Time Bandits , Gilliam stuck with the notion of framing his story within history, but he frames this one with much more wonder and awe. The movie is built around Craig Warnock (who only acted once more after this) as Kevin, the child of uncaring, modern parents who would rather watch TV than read about ancient history with him.

Then, quite suddenly, six little people barrel out of his closet. They are on the run from the Supreme Being, having stolen a magical map that guides them to various time holes, which allow them to journey between space and time.

Eventually, the self-appointed leader of the gang Randall (played by British actor David Rappaport in what would turn into a breakout role) tells Kevin that while the Supreme Being made the universe, this band of little people shaped it. They’re going through history stealing everything they can because they want to finally get paid for their work. That is, if they can keep the Evil Genius from stealing the map and turning everyone into unthinking computers.

Why does something magic happen? God. Why do people suddenly have to run from Point A to Point B? God. Why does evil happen? God brushes this classic question off, saying it has “something to do with free will.” God remains a constant authority for Gilliam to poke and prod.

This allows Kevin, Randall, and the rest to move between Napoleon and Robin Hood with ease, the latter played by fellow Python and longtime personal antagonist John Cleese. Cleese plays Robin Hood as a smooth-talking politician, glad-handing the bandits and redistributing their wealth to the poor — but only after having one of the Merry Men punch them in the face.

Sean Connery also makes a strong appearance as the world’s coolest dad, King Agamemnon.

Visually, the movie takes on moments of grand beauty and utter chaos. When the little people are on screen, it’s a busy cacophony straight out of the Marx Brothers. To Gilliam’s credit, the physical condition of the little people is only ever referenced once, as a bizarre answer to a different question from Cleese’s Robin Hood. Each of them, including Kenny Baker of Star Wars (the original R2-D2), runs around causing havoc and has a few traits that distinguish them from the others.

Perhaps sensing that the movie could not be based around a single child, various scenes are punched up with celebrity cameos. Shelly Duval is particularly wonderful in just a few scenes as a perpetually unlucky lover Dame Pansy. Sean Connery also makes a strong appearance as the world’s coolest dad, King Agamemnon.

In 2002, Gilliam said in an interview that he “never wanted to make naturalistic films. I’ve always liked the idea that film is an artifice, and that this is admitted right from the start. So we create a world that isn’t true to a realistic naturalistic world, but is truthful…that is the main thing.” Time Bandits tries to be truthful to a child’s imagination, in all its wonder and horror.

10 Great Fantasy Movies Not Based On Books

• Some of the best fantasy movies in cinema history were based on books, such as The Princess Bride and The NeverEnding Story.
• However, many great fantasy movies are original works or inspired by other media, like Labyrinth and Dragonheart.
• These movies offer creative and visually stunning experiences, with fantastic performances and intriguing storylines.

Fantasy is a genre typically associated with literature, whether it be dark adult novels, children's books, or otherwise, but not all stories in fantasy movies started life as books. Some of the best movies in fantasy cinema history are based on the written word. The Princess Bride , The NeverEnding Story , The Last Unicorn , and Bedknobs and Broomsticks are just some examples of fantasy adventures that were books before they were movies.

However, it's fair to say some of the very best fantasy movies are original works or otherwise inspired. They may even feel like they should've been books, resulting in shock and surprise when people realize they were not. Their stories do not trace back to any particular novel, although some of them were adapted from or inspired by other pieces of media.

The musical fantasy movie Labyrinth is an iconic adventure following a teenager, Sarah, into a magical mazy world to rescue her baby brother, Toby, whom she wished away due to his constant crying while babysitting. It stars Jennifer Connelly as Sarah and the late, great David Bowie as Jareth, the Goblin King and the ruler of the magical world Sarah enters. The weird and wonderful creatures of Labyrinth were created by Jim Henson's Creature Shop, making for a fun-filled viewing experience. The film was written by Monty Python's Terry Jones, ensuring hilarity sometimes ensues. Labyrinth is a creative, visually stunning, absorbing movie and a superb coming-of-age parable.

Legend (1985)

Ridley scott's epic adventure into darkness.

The epitome of epic dark fantasy, Legend follows a green man of the forest and a "pure being" called Jack, tasked with preventing the world from being plunged into eternal night by the evil Lord of Darkness. It stars Tom Cruise as Jack and Tim Curry as the Lord of Darkness, with the incredible Curry being the movie's standout performer, as he always tends to be. The film boasts some gorgeous visual and set pieces, both buoyed by brilliant makeup and special effects. The story is limited, but Legend is worth watching regardless due to its many good points. It was written for the big screen by novelist William Hjortsberg.

Dragonheart (1996)

Dragonheart is an epic adventure that follows a knight known for killing dragons and the last dragon alive. The unlikely duo must work together to thwart a nefarious king made partially immortal by having half of the dragon's heart in his chest. Dennis Quaid leads the incredible cast as Sir Bowen, the knight, with Sean Connery as the voice of Draco, the dragon, and David Thewlis as King Einon. Pete Postlethwaite and Dina Meyer also star. Dragonheart is powered by its dazzling special effects (with the odd jarring exception), which earned it an Academy Award nomination, Connery's formidable performance, and energetic action. Screenwriter Charles Edward Pogue wrote it.

Highlander (1986)

An ancient war between eternal warriors.

Highlander is an action-packed fantasy adventure chronicling the violent end to an ancient war between immortal warriors. It stars Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod , with a brilliant supporting cast including Sean Connery, Clancy Brown, and Roxanne Hart. It's a deliciously violent movie that's cheesy at times, but it's fast-paced and action-packed, ensuring constant entertainment. The talented team of Gregory Widen, Peter Bellwood, and Larry Ferguson wrote the screenplay.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)

A journey through imagination and dreams.

Written by director Terry Gilliam alongside fellow Monty Python star Charles McKeown, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus stars Christopher Plummer as the leader of a near-bankrupt traveling theater group. Having lost a bet with Satan, his show takes audiences through a magical mirror into a fantasy dream world. Heath Ledger plays Tony Shepard, a new group member who experiences said world. Due to Ledger's death during filming, various actors - Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell - portray him following dream transformations. It has an intriguing and creative concept, aesthetics that earned it Oscar nominations for Best Art Direction and Costume Design , and fine performances from its fantastic cast.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

Pixar's Brave is an animated fantasy movie written by four screenwriters. It's about a Medieval princess, Merida, in the Scottish Highlands. Her refusal to be betrothed causes chaos - such as her mother becoming a bear - and she must fight to undo the mayhem, which includes looking deep inside herself. Like every Pixar movie , Brave is superb, with a terrific voice cast that includes Kelly Macdonald as Merida, Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, Julie Walters, and Robbie Coltrane, all of whom perform perfectly. It's rousing and full of spirit, has a significant and inspiring message for young girls, and its look and animation, typical of Pixar productions , are gorgeous.

Willow is a high-fantasy adventure movie written by screenwriter Bob Dolman. It follows the eponymous diminutive aspiring sorcerer, Willow Ufgood, as he teams up with a boastful swordsman to protect a baby princess from an evil witch. It stars Warwick Davis as Willow and Val Kilmer as swordsman Madmartigan, and their excellent on-screen chemistry makes the movie. Willow is a charming tale with plenty of entertaining action , impressive acting performances, and outstanding special effects.

Craig Warnock stars as Kevin, and the brilliant extensive supporting cast includes David Rappaport, Kenny Baker, John Cleese, Sean Connery, Ian Holm, Michael Palin, David Warner, and Shelley Duvall. Boasting some awesome set designs that give it a terrific look, Time Bandits is an original, intelligent, lighthearted, and funny film that's entertaining enough just for its tendency to showcase famous faces so often.

Time loop stories are a classic science fiction premise, and Star Trek has dipped into that well several times. Although Star Trek: The Original Series never did a traditional time loop episode, plenty of Captain James T. Kirk's (William Shatner) adventures involved time travel. Every Star Trek series since has incorporated time travel in some way, including two of the franchise's most highly regarded films, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home & Star Trek: First Contact. Not every Trek series has done a time loop episode, but it's an incredibly fun premise that makes for great television when it's done well.

The time loop premise fits so well within the world of Star Trek , that it makes sense the franchise would return to it multiple times. Time loops (or "temporal causality loops") are apparently so common in the Star Trek universe, that Starfleet uses a time loop simulation as one of their training drills. In Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2, episode 8, "I, Excretus," a holodeck simulation called "Time Loop" was one of the possible drills the USS Cerrtos' Lower Deckers had to run, along with things like infiltrating a Borg cube or escaping the Mirror Universe. Being a Starfleet officer means being ready for anything, and here are five Star Trek episodes that trapped their characters in a time loop.

Many television shows have taken advantage of a time loop premise, with Stargate SG-1, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The X-Files, and Supernatural all delivering particularly fun time loop episodes.

Although not a time loop episode in the traditional sense, Star Trek: Enterprise's "Future Tense" features two different miniature time loops. When the Enterprise NX-01 finds a derelict shuttlepod from the future floating in space, the temporal radiation leaking from the ship causes time disturbances. As Commander Trip Tucker (Connor Trinneer) and Lt. Malcolm Reed (Dominic Keating) continue to examine the shuttlepod, they find themselves reliving the same moment over and over.

"Future Tense" has some fun moments, including the time loops.

Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) and Sub-Commander T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) discover that the pod is from the 31st century and presume it must be connected to the Temporal Cold War in some way. To keep the pod from the Suliban or the Tholians, Archer and Reed try to booby-trap it but end up stuck in another time loop. Eventually Trip activates the pod's distress signal and the ship vanishes, presumably back to the 31st century. "Future Tense" has some fun moments, including the time loops, but the Temporal Cold War storyline on Enterprise never quite worked as well as it could have.

The 31st-century shuttlepod is impossibly bigger on the inside than the outside, a nod to the time-traveling TARDIS on Doctor Who .

4 "Coda"

When a shuttlecraft carrying Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and Commander Chakotay (Robert Beltran) crash lands on a planet, Janeway is seriously injured. Before long, Star Trek: Voyager 's villains the Vidiians find the crashed shuttle and kill Janeway and Chakotay. The two then appear again on the shuttle just before they crashed. Immediately realizing they're caught in a time loop, Janeway and Chakotay try something different, but this time, their shuttle explodes. Time resets again, and Janeway and Chakotay make it back to Voyager before Janeway is killed again.

"Coda" is an entertaining and even frightening episode, and Kate Mulgrew delivers a great performance.

In the final loop of Star Trek: Voyager 's "Coda", Janeway sees herself "die" and encounters the supposed spirit of her father. Realizing that something isn't right, Janeway refuses to go with him and wakes up on the planet as Chakotay and The Doctor (Robert Picardo) revive her. "Coda" is an entertaining and even frightening episode, and Kate Mulgrew delivers a great performance. However, the final reveal that most of the story happened in Janeway's head undercuts some of the more emotional moments.

3 "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad"

Star Trek: Discovery season 1 received a mixed reception from fans, but "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad" stands out as a solid and entertaining take on a classic premise. When Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson) arrives on the USS Discovery, he enacts his plan to kill Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs) and sell Discovery's spore drive technology to the Klingons. Mudd has a time crystal that allows him to repeat the same 30-minute time period over and over.

Victorious, Burnham delivers the coup de grâce line to Mudd: "Turns out you can con a con man."

Due to the tardigrade DNA in his system, Lieutenant Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) remains aware of the time loops, and he recruits Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Lt. Ash Tyler (Shazad Latif) to help him stop Mudd. Mudd kills Lorca repeatedly and nearly succeeds in his plan, but Stamets, Burnham, and Tyler reroute Mudd's signal to his fiancée, Stella (Katherine Barrell), and her father rather than the Klingons. Victorious, Burnham delivers the coup de grâce line to Mudd: "Turns out you can con a con man."

In one of Star Trek: Discovery's best episodes so far, Captain Burnham and her new First Officer, Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) , find themselves jumping through different time periods in Discovery's past, present, and future. Like the previous time he was stuck in a time loop, Stamets remains aware of the jumps and works with Burnham and Rayner to find a solution. They revisit multiple moments from past seasons of Discovery , and Michael even encounters her past self, resulting in a Burnham vs. Burnham fistfight.

The time jumping turns out to be the result of a Krenim "time bug" that courier Moll (Eve Harlow) snuck onto the Enterprise in the previous episode.

Burnham and Rayner also get a glimpse of a possible future where the Breen ended up with the Progenitors' technology and destroyed the Federation. Thankfully, Stamets, Burnham, and Rayner prevent this future by destroying the time bug, and Discovery loses only six hours rather than the weeks it could have lost. Not only is Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4 an incredibly fun episode of Star Trek , but it also shows how far Burnham and the other characters have come since the show's first season.

1 "Cause and Effect"

In Star Trek's first true time loop episode, the USS Enterprise-D is destroyed over and over again as Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner) and the rest of the crew try to find a solution. After a cold open that ends with the Enterprise blowing up, the crew members end up back at their game of poker. Although they do not initially realize they are stuck in a time loop, Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) begins experiencing a sense of déjà vu. After they discover their predicament, Data sends a message to himself using his positronic brain.

Wonderfully directed by Jonathan Frakes, every time loop in "Cause and Effect" feels unique.

At the end of each loop, the Enterprise collides with another ship as it emerges from a space-time distortion, after Data's suggestion to use the tractor beam fails. Data eventually realizes the message he sent himself indicates they should try Commander William Riker's (Jonathan Frakes) suggestion to decompress the main shuttlebay. The plan works and the Enterprise finally avoids the collision. Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) then contacts the other ship, the USS Bozeman, which has been missing for over 90 years. Wonderfully directed by Jonathan Frakes, every time loop in "Cause and Effect" feels unique, and the episode remains one of Star Trek's most memorable time travel stories.
