A guide to luxury cruising on Azamara Pursuit

With luxurious boutique style, Azamara Pursuit is the latest to join Azamara Club Cruises. I was delighted to be invited along to the naming celebrations and a short cruise from Southampton to Cherbourg.

We’d previously spent a week cruising in Greece and Turkey on Azamara Journey and absolutely loved the small luxury cruises. With only 700 guests the focus on the destinations – what Azamara Cruises calls Destination Immersion .

Azamara Pursuit is essentially the same size and style of ship as her sisters Azamara Quest and Journey. But, with every new ship, Azamara is looking to enhance and improve the guest experience. Read on for my guide to luxury cruising on Azamara Pursuit and everything we enjoyed on board.

An introduction to Azamara Pursuit

Azamara Club Cruises launched in 2007 with two ships designed for luxury small ship cruising, as part of the Royal Caribbean portfolio. They successfully established the Azamara brand with sister ships Azamara Quest and Azamara Journey. Azamara Pursuit is the latest new ship to join the Azamara cruise line.

As a luxury cruise line, Azamara is known for small ship cruising. With a maximum of 700 guests in 351 staterooms on its new ship, the experience feels exclusive and intimate.

Like the Quest and Journey, Pursuit is one of the R-class ships that were originally built for Renaissance Cruises. It has recently completed a refit with Harland and Wolff in Ireland to bring the decor and facilities in line with the luxury Azamara brand.

The Azamara Pursuit Cabins

We checked into our balcony stateroom 6061, our home from home for the two days of the Azamara Pursuit launch festivities. When we last sailed with Azamara Club Cruises in 2015 we were on Azamara Journey ( read about it here ).

The decor of he Azamara Journey, although luxurious, was more classic. Since then all the ships have been re-imagined with a new more contemporary look of restful neutral shades and accents of colour.

As we had expected, our stateroom on Azamara Pursuit felt very luxurious. We loved the soft carpets, gorgeous bedlinen and a cloud-like duvets and pillows.

Some of the original dark wood remains but the overall effect is light and airy. There was an outside seating area on our balcony, a lovely place to relax in privacy.

Our bathroom was small but perfectly formed, with a small shower with curtain, and a moulded basin. I enjoyed the lovely “Eco-boutique” Aloe Vera and Green Tea toiletries.

The Azamara Pursuit Suites

I was also able to have a look around some of the Azamara Pursuit suites. These take luxury cruising to a whole new level. The style of decor is the same but of course you get a lot more space. There’s a separate sitting room and larger and more luxurious marble bathrooms. In some cases a balcony big enough to allow your own sunloungers.

Small luxury cruises - Club World Owner's suite on Azamara Pursuit

I was told that “on Azamara, we sell from the top down” . The suites are normally the first to sell out on every cruise, often being booked a year or two ahead.

For spa lovers, the Club Spa suites are close to the Sanctum Spa. They have a large bathroom that includes a glass enclosed bathtub overlooking the ocean.

On Azamara Pursuit, the refit has allowed more suites to be added. These include services such as butler service, complimentary laundry, specialty dining, internet and in-room spirits.

Naming Ceremony for Azamara Pursuit

The naming ceremony for Azamara Pursuit took place in the afternoon after we had boarded in Southampton. This is always a special moment for a new ship.

Traditionally each ship has one or more Godmothers. These are women of achievement who are felt to represent the values and spirit of the ship.

During the ceremony Azamara’s President and CEO Larry Pimentel explained that he wanted Godmothers for Azamara Pursuit who represented both their UK and US guests. These women were ambassadors in the field of travel, especially the experiential cruise travel and destination focus that Azamara espouses.

From the UK, Azamara Pursuit’s godmother is Lucy Huxley, Editor-in-chief of Travel Weekly UK. From the US comes Ellen Asmodeo-Giglio, EVP and Chief Revenue officer of AFAR Media.

Larry Pimentel also spoke about the Beacon of Hope statue which stands 60 feet high in the centre of Belfast. This is where the ship was refitted by Harland and Wolff. There is a similar sculpture standing in the Mosaic Café atrium. We were all given a small replica of the statue as a memento, to represent the wish for hope, peace and harmony for mankind.

The naming ceremony celebrations continued after dinner with an amazing display of fireworks over the water as the Azamara Pursuit sailed out of Southampton.

A tour of Azamara Pursuit

Over the next couple of days I had a chance to look around the ship. I found plenty of spaces to relax so you never feel crowded on an Azamara ship.

The small pool and sunbathing area is on Deck 9 with elegant sun loungers for relaxation around the deck. On a ship of this size you don’t expect the multiple pool areas of larger ships. As the Azamara philosophy is all around the the destination, with limited days at sea, the space works well.

Pool Deck on Azamara Pursuit with Azamara Club Cruises Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

There is more outdoor space on the Sunset Verandah and the Sanctum Terrace (for spa guests). I found more sunbathing areas on the Deck 11 Sundeck. The pool deck is also the setting for the Azamara White Night Party.

A White Night Party happens once on each cruise, when all the tables are arranged around the pool for an outdoor dinner with live music. It’s magical when the weather is warm and you can dine under the stars.

Mosaic Café on Azamara Pursuit

The Mosaic Café is at the heart of Deck 5, with the elegant original wrought iron staircase which adds a touch of drama. A coffee bar servs cakes and light snacks. With the couple of small shops in this area, it feels that this is the equivalent of the village square. It’s a good place to meet friends for a coffee and to watch the world go by.

The Den on Azamara Pursuit

Near the Mosaic Café is The Den in partnership with AFAR. This large bar and lounge area which is a comfortable place to relax and have a drink before or after dinner.

On the other Azamara ships, part of this space is taken up by a casino, but the Azamara Pursuit casino was removed in the refit. The space is now used for the Shore Excursions and Cruise Again desks. This is where you can discuss your requirements in an informal and relaxed setting.

The Den on Azamara Pursuit with Azamara Club Cruises Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

Removing the casino is something that will also be happening on the other Azamara ships in the future. This keeps with the emphasis of the brand on Destination Immersion , with experiential shore excursions, evening and overnight stays. To appeal to the guests who enjoy this concept, it made more sense to use the space freed up by the casino for additional relaxation and cabin space.

On the same deck is the Cabaret Lounge, used for films, talks and evening shows. During our cruise we attended the naming ceremony here.

The Living Room on Azamara Pursuit

One of my other favourite areas on board is The Living Room on Deck 10. This has a card room area, bar and spacious sitting area.

The decor here is pale and elegant with accents of colour and luxurious velvets. I especially enjoyed the loungers that look out to sea. They are just the place I could imagine curling up with a good book or just taking a quiet moment to enjoy the ocean and daydream a little.

There is another small and elegant area called The Drawing Room also on Deck 10. This quiet wood panelled space is designed for use as a library or a room that can be used for private events.

The Art on board Azamara Pursuit

I tagged along to a tour by curator Michael Loveland of the artworks on board Azamara Pursuit. All art has been carefully chosen or commissioned for the ship.

Artwork in Guest relations area Azamara Pursuit

On display throughout the ship are pieces by well known or emerging international artists. Some are specially commissioned for each space, to reflect the destinations that the ship will cruise to.

The artworks are contemporary and sometimes quite conceptual in feel, the photography, collage and sculptures are beautifully in tune with their setting.

Guest relations artwork on Azamara Pursuit

As an example, in the Guest Relations area we looked at the rose petals falling through the mist by Silvia Rivas from Argentina on a theme of migration. Behind the main desk a collage with layers of paper and and drops of red ink that had been sourced from different countries in the world.

The spa on board Azamara Pursuit

On Deck 9 on the same level as the pool, you’ll find the Sanctum Spa which offers treatments using Elemis products, with a gym and salon area. There’s a private outdoor relaxation area for spa guests with a small plunge pool and a programme of yoga and fitness classes in the gym. The Club Spa suites next to the spa with large bathrooms and an ocean view bath are especially popular for spa lovers.

Restaurants on board Azamara Pursuit

The windows cafe.

Informal dining on Azamara Pursuit is in the Windows Café on Deck 9. This adjoins the pool area at the back of the ship, which is where breakfast is served buffet style.

The food on board is top notch with an incredible variety and beautiful presentation. I tend to stick to the fruit and healthy options and enjoyed the juice shots and freshly made smoothies.

Others would be tucking into the pancakes or bacon and eggs. Much of the selection was self service, with some things made freshly to order and table service for tea and coffee.

Breakfast on Azamara Pursuit with Azamara Club Cruises Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

The Windows Café was light and bright with window seating on both sides. It extends to the Sunset Verandah where we would select from the buffet and then dine al fresco.

Sunset Verandah on Azamara Pursuit with Azamara Club Cruises Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

The Patio on Azamara Pursuit

At one end of the pool area and adjoining the Windows Café, was an area called the Patio, where lunch and dinner was served. The space is designed as a Pool Grill with a salad bar and casual dining although with table service.

We ate here and enjoyed the atmosphere of being close to the pool although in a slightly more sheltered area. This area would be ideal on cooler days. The menu included casual dishes like wraps, soups, open sandwiches and burgers, all served elegantly with a “Country Club” feel.

Discoveries Restaurant on Azamara Pursuit

More formal dining in the evening is in the Discoveries Restaurant and here the decor was classic and the atmosphere more formal. There’s an open seating approach here.

You can dine when you are ready and mingle with other guests as you wish, rather than being at a fixed table for the whole cruise. The menu is extensive, the dishes beautifully presented and the cuisine international. Some dishes nod towards the destinations the ship is visiting.

Specialty dining on Azamara Pursuit

There are a couple of specialty restaurants on Azamara Pursuit which are the same as the sister ships and situated on Deck 10. Aqualina serves Italian style dishes, such as tuna tartare, lobster ravioli or Dover sole with tomato risotto. The decor is elegant and classic with pale leather banquettes and formal table settings.

Prime C is the second specialty restaurant, the mirror image of Aqualina and serves steak and seafood. I didn’t get a chance to see the decor as it was in use when we visited. Both restaurants are in high demand. There is a supplement of around $25 per person (based on our last cruise) when you eat there.

Service on board Azamara Pursuit

As you’d expect from a luxury small ship cruise line, part of the experience is the incredible service that you get on board an Azamara ship. The multi-national crew were beautifully dressed in their stylish uniforms. Everyone was always welcoming and friendly, anticipating your requirements and nothing was too much trouble.

Of course if you’ve enjoyed a cruise holiday, especially a luxury cruise before, you’ll know that the standards of service are generally very high. But on Azamara, the service feels very genuine and authentic, and we enjoyed conversing with the staff. They seem to enjoy that too, while always maintaining their professionalism.

It’s also worth noting that on Azamara Club Cruises gratuities are included in your cruise price, so that’s not something you need to budget extra for, unlike many other cruises.

The Az-amazing evening on Azamara Pursuit

Another of the unique and most enjoyable features of an Azamara cruise is that each cruise includes an Az-amazing evening on shore. For this evening a special experience is offered to the guests included in your cruise price.

On our previous Azamara Cruise in Greece and Turkey, we spent a special evening at Ephesus at a classical concert in the ancient amphitheatre, sipping a glass of wine under the stars.

tips for travellers azamara

As we were only on board for a couple of nights, this time it was an Az-amazing afternoon in Cherbourg. The art deco cruise terminal had been transformed into a French market, the stalls piled with flowers and produce. There was a macaron tower and local cheeses, as well as a French trio of musicians and other entertainers.

After wandering around the French market, we were treated to a cabaret show with a 14-piece orchestra. Singers belted out Edith Piaf favourites and a Moulin Rouge style dance show.

The Az-amazing events are always designed to show off the local culture and give the guests a feeling of Destination Immersion . You’ll dip into the energy and culture of a place, albeit a polished version of reality.

Read about our Az-amazing evening at Ephesus here

The White Night Party on Azamara Pursuit

Another highlight of each Azamara cruise, is the White Night Party that takes place once during each cruise, weather permitting. This is a really special event where guests are encouraged to dress in white. The restaurant is moved out onto the pool deck and a fabulous buffet dinner is served under the stars.

White Night party on Azamara Pursuit in Cherbourg Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

For our White Night party in Cherbourg, the champagne was flowing, the oysters were on ice and we dined on sushi, grilled lobster and other delicious dishes. On our previous cruise we experienced this off the Greek Island of Patmos and it was just as much fun in Cherbourg, even though the night air was not quite as warm. The live music and dancing on deck made for a party atmosphere to celebrate the ship’s naming ceremony and new addition to the Azamara fleet.

Destination Immersion with Azamara Club Cruises

One of the things that differentiates Azamara Club Cruises from other luxury cruise lines is their focus on the places you visit on the cruise. They call this Destination Immersion , a concept that they have even managed to register as their trademark. It means that Azamara Club Cruises is perfect for travellers who are looking for an authentic travel experience and are fascinated by the food and culture of the places they visit.

Cherbourg with Azamara Pursuit

While there’s no compromise with quality on board, this isn’t really a cruise that’s about all the activities available on the ship. Instead you might think of the Azamara ship as a luxurious boutique hotel that transports you from place to place. This enables you to experience the essence of the destination even when you don’t have a long in each port of call.

An example of this Destination Immersion concept is that the smaller ships are able to dock right in the heart of a city. Larger ships might have to put you on a shuttle bus, and you’ll be visiting ports that the larger ships can’t reach.

Cherbourg with Azamara Pursuit

The Azamara ships arrive early in port and stay late, often sailing after dinner or even staying overnight. You can get the feel of a place after the coach parties have gone home and the other ships have sailed.

The shore excursions are designed to be special and unique. You meet local experts and personalities who can give you a feel for their own place and passion.

Exciting new experiences

We heard from President and CEO Larry Pimentel, that having extended their fleet to 3 ships has enabled Azamara Club Cruises to extend their Destination Immersion concept even further, to now offer cruises to a wider range of exciting new destinations.

They are extending their packages to include land based experiences such as safaris in South Africa. Also new for 2019 are country intensive voyages, where you can visit multiple ports in a single country for a more in depth experience.

Cherbourg with Azamara Pursuit

Of course in a 2 day cruise it was difficult to experience all this in the same way as a full scale cruise. But, we got a taste in our Az-amazing afternoon that was put on in Cherbourg, with a French market and cabaret show. Afterwards I wandered around Cherbourg and in just a 15 minute was strolling past the sailing boats in the harbour, arriving in the heart of the old town.

Parapluies of Cherbourg with Azamara Pursuit

In the Place de Gaulle is the impressive theatre and fountain. There were plenty of small shops in the nearby streets selling local food specialties of Normandy, if you are looking for a souvenir.

I ducked through the low arches between the shopfronts on Rue du Ble to find the old stone houses built around a courtyard. Some with towers with spiral staircases and a lookout window at the top.

A display of umbrellas hanging above the streets was a reminder of the famous romantic film set here Parapluies de Cherbourg . The young heroine is played by Catherine Deneuve and her family own an umbrella shop.

For more information on visiting Cherbourg visit the Cherbourg Tourism website

What’s included in your Azamara Club Cruise

As all cruises are slightly different in what they include in their cruise price, it’s worth mentioning exactly what is covered in your Azamara Club Cruise.

Included in your cruise package

  • All your meals and snacks in a range of different restaurants on board
  • Select standard spirits, international beers and wines which you can order throughout the day, not just at meal times.
  • Bottled water, soft drinks, specialty coffees and teas
  • Complimentary AzAmazing Evenings event on most voyages
  • Self-service laundry
  • Shuttle service to and from port communities, where available
  • Concierge services for personal guidance and reservations

Not included in your cruise package

  • Flights to and from your cruise start / end point
  • Shore excursions
  • Dining in the specialty restaurants Aqualina and Prime C

Who will enjoy an Azamara Club Cruise?

Based on our experience of Azamara Pursuit and our previous cruise on Azamara Journey, the Azamara Club Cruises are ideal for couples, solo travellers and small groups of friends. The guests we met tended to be experienced and affluent travellers, normally retired or semi retired and aged from 50s to 80s.

Ships have a luxurious grownup feel and are not really set up for children. If you are looking for a family cruise I’d look at other cruise lines first.

Because of their emphasis on the destinations, the Azamara Club Cruises would be a great option for travellers who love to get an authentic travel experience and are trying a cruise for the first time. You could say that this is the perfect cruise for people who are not sure they will enjoy cruising!

Travellers who love style and quality will also enjoy the contemporary look and feel of the Azamara ships. This is a premium, luxury cruise line with the price to match. But, a lot is included in the price that you might have to pay extra for with other cruise lines. To get a feel for the full cruise itineraries on offer and cruise prices take a look at one of the Azamara Club Cruise website .

I enjoyed reading your article since we are booked to go to the Panama Canal itinerary on the Pursuit in November. I was curious to know why specialty restaurants are offered. I would expect that the quality of food in the regular dining choices would be enough. Are we missing anything if we don't try the specialty restaurants? I'm also considering the shore excursions. Do you recommend them and do they offer more than if we walked around and explored on our own? Thank you.

Heather Cowper

Thursday 11th of October 2018

@Ellen Most cruise lines offer specialty restaurants, just to provide a bit more variety in the cuisine, although in my experience the food experience on Azamara is very high quality so if you didn't use that option you won't be missing out. Many guests like to book for the specialty restaurant once on the cruise as a treat and they get quite booked up. Regarding the shore excursions it often depends on the destination. If it's a port that is easily walkable, you may enjoy exploring on your own but if there is transport involved the excursions are a hassle free way of seeing the maximum in a short space of time. Azamara offers very interesting excursions as per their Destination Immersion philosophy and I think you'd be missing out if you didn't do at least some of them, although of course the costs can add up.

Thanks to  @Grandma Cruising  for keeping the spreadsheet up to date!]

It was suggested that it might be a good idea to have a ‘sticky’ thread which had tips for cruisers new to Azamara, so here goes.

White Night - Azamara Cruises normally include a ‘White Night’. This is an on-deck party, with a buffet served from the Patio area. Most people wear white clothing (though this is not required).

Speciality Restaurants- good idea to make your bookings as soon as you board. There is sometimes a bookings table in the terminal building and always one inside the entrance to Windows buffet.

Dining Packages - the speciality restaurants are $30pp, but you can buy dining packages at a ‘bargain’ price - for example 3 meals for $70pp.

Cocktails - the list of included cocktails is only intended as an example of the available cocktails, you can ask for any cocktail to be made with the included spirits.

Breakfast drinks - you can ask for a Bloody Mary and/or a Mimosa (Buck’s Fizz) for breakfast and you can have a smoothie made to your own tastes. If you like ginger ask for an ‘Energiser’ at breakfast - it’s a small smoothie which has ginger in it and is (unsurprisingly) very energising!

Stateroom fridge - the sodas in the fridge are included, the alcoholic drinks are not. You can ask your stateroom attendant to get you the sodas you like to keep in your fridge.

Bringing alcohol on board - you can bring alcohol on board to drink in your stateroom. If you want to drink it in a public room there is a $10 corkage charge.

Please add your own tips, so we can get a really good information thread for all those going on their first Azamara cruise.

An extended list of included spirits is available from Guest Relations.

All dining room menus for your cruise and speciality restaurant menus are available through the interactive TV in your stateroom ( except Pursuit at the present time)

3,000+ Club

The Living Room serves a variety of tapas pre-dinner and is a great place for a before-dinner cocktail.

The Patio serves a casual-dress, table-service dinner on deck 9. Menu includes lamb tournedos, beef paillard, chicken cordon bleu, and more. You can also take items from the Windows buffet to your table.

Suite passengers have no-charge access to the spa deck with thalassotherapy pool and lounge chairs at the front of the spa on deck 9. A limited number of spa deck passes are available for a fee for non-suite passengers.

You’re right so I won’t. Stickies have to be normal threads I found out, so it’ll work like the Azamara Cabins ‘sticky’ thread.

There have been a lot of first-timers on CC recently.

Can you provide info on pricing of T-Pool for non-suite guests and where and when to book?

Also, self serve laundry and if they do laundry specials (by the bag) during a longer itinerary

Tom47

There is no charge for self service laundry, located on deck 7.

Can you provide info on pricing of T-Pool for non-suite guests and where and when to book?   Also, self serve laundry and if they do laundry specials (by the bag) during a longer itinerary   Thanks

I don’t know the pricing for the T-pool (but there are 2 jacuzzi pools on the pool deck too) but I’m sure someone else will.

On longer cruises there is often a laundry sale - on our last cruise it was $40 for a bag, and it comes back nicely folded, and pressed where appropriate (shirts etc). You can get a lot in a bag - there’s an art to stuffing it in!

As already said, the self-service laundry is free, including detergent.

I believe the T pool area is $175 per couple or $99 for an individual, This may vary slightly by length or cruise.

During rough weather guest relations provides free 2 pac of sea sick pills, red apples and green apples (depending on what you believe), sugar coated ginger (also at entry to dining room).

Rolling items before putting them into the laundry bag side by side gets you 6 to 7 more items per bag.

The sun-deck, Deck 11, is a lovely place to sunbathe in hot weather when the ship is at sea. You get a really nice breeze up there. Waiters still come up there to fetch you drinks.

laurieb

Complimentary bottled water is always available to take off the ship when in port; there are tubs located near the exit.

There are umbrellas in your stateroom to take onshore, as well as some where you exit the ship.

There are binoculars in your cabin, but they are poor so bring your own if you think you’ll need them.

Thanks so much for these helpful tips. We are considering a 26 days cruise on Azamara. We have been on many cruises but never on Azamara. What is the official language on Azamara? I know there will be people from many different countries but we were wondering about the official language on this ship.

As a Az newbie, I really appreciate this thread. I hope it's okay to ask questions?

1. Can anyone tell me if daiquiris are part of the included drinks?

2. How will I get my Discoverer perks? I suppose there aren't coupons to use (like for laundry), but how will I get free internet, etc.?

A Daiquiri is part of the ‘example’ list of included drinks.

When you get onboard you should get a letter in your stateroom about your free internet minutes. That gives you a code to use to access the internet using the free minutes and instructions. If you prefer to trade in your free minutes against a ‘Full Voyage Unlimited’ internet package, you need to talk to Guest Relations. At Discoverer level you get 90 free minutes or $100 off the cost of a ‘Full Voyage Unlimited’ package (cost $19.95 a day)

Don't aassume internet shuts off because you turn off your browser. It doesn't. We rolled through 100 minutes in error ( and AZ assisted/ reissued them).

AZ written instructions used to direct you to logoff.com. Guest relations was surprised that they no longer provide that written advice.

Azamara showers are very small, with shower curtains. We now bring magnetic clips to stop the shower curtain from billowing in. I bought them on Amazon

The recent list posted on the board didn't include daiquiris so that's why I was asking.

Thanks so much for your helpful response. This information will help in making my decision.

You must wait until you’re aboard. We purchase our special dinners and then head directly to the spa as there are limited passes for sale. Apparently they can also be bought as a day pass, but we have never done it.

You can see the list on Azamara’s web page on the bottom menu - go to ‘Onboard Packages’, then ‘Beverage Packages’ where you’ll find a link to the list of complimentary drinks. That takes you to this page https://www.azamaraclubcruises.co.uk/booked-guests/onboard-packages/complimentary-beverages

Azamara will always hold a Meet & Mingle Party, no matter how few or how many sign up for it. If you register you should get an invitation in your stateroom, but if you don’t you’ll find it on the first day programme, or you can ask at Guest Relations. It’s often at 6pm on embarkation day, after the muster drill.

Everything you need to know about Azamara Cruises cabins and suites

Ashley Kosciolek

Azamara Cruises is a mid-level cruise line boasting more elegant, classic, upscale decor than the likes of mainstream cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean or Carnival. Its ships feature dark woods with sophisticated furnishings, patterns and color schemes, and its cabins are no exception.

Because Azamara 's ships are all from the former Renaissance Cruises' R Class, which was launched more than 20 years ago, the cabins are on the small side, but they're still comfortable, functional and well appointed.

Here, we'll give you a rundown of the different types of cabins you can book, how big they are and the sorts of amenities that come with each.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Azamara Cruises cabin primer

Azamara has four general cabin types: inside or interior, outside or oceanview, balcony or veranda, and suite. They fall into five main categories: Club Interior, Club Oceanview, Club Veranda, Club Veranda Plus and Suite.

tips for travellers azamara

On each of its ships, Azamara offers seven accessible staterooms in a mix of cabin types: two Club Continent Suites, three Club Interior Staterooms and two Club Oceanview Staterooms (see below). These accommodations offer larger main doorways (at least 33") and bathroom doorways (at least 34") to allow entry for wheelchairs, scooters and other mobility aids. They are also equipped with lowered closet bars, a 5-foot turning radius and anywhere from 227 to 324 square feet of space. Bathrooms have ramped thresholds, grab bars, roll-in showers, lowered sinks/vanities, adjustable-height toilet seats, fold-down shower benches and handheld showerheads.

Unfortunately, there are no dedicated solo cabins on any of Azamara's ships, but the line does offer singles discounts on occasion, and when it doesn't, anyone who pays double -- known as a single supplement to account for one person staying in a room designed for double occupancy -- receives double loyalty points toward their Azamara Circle status .

All staterooms, regardless of type or category, are outfitted with at least one queen bed that can convert to two twins, a desk/vanity with a phone, nightstands with reading lamps, at least one TV that's a minimum of 40", outlets and USB charging ports, a mini-bar, individual climate controls, closets, a safe, a hair dryer, robes, slippers, umbrellas and fresh flowers.

Each cabin has its own bathroom with towels, bath products, a shower, sink/vanity, storage shelves and a toilet. Additionally, all rooms include daily make-up and turndown services, as well as 24-hour room service, a tote bag, a daily bulletin of activities and turndown treats.

Inside cabins on Azamara ships

Azamara's Club Interior staterooms are 158 square feet, and they're the least expensive accommodations onboard, offering no windows or balconies.

However, they make up for their lack of natural light and ocean breezes with their more economic price point and a fully dark sleeping experience that passengers swear gives them some of the best rest they've ever had.

Only standard amenities mentioned above are included here, but if you're someone who plans only to be in your room to shower and sleep, an inside cabin could be a perfect fit for you.

tips for travellers azamara

Oceanview cabins on Azamara ships

Although balcony cabins are, technically, oceanview cabins, in this context, the line's Club Oceanview Staterooms refer to rooms that have only a window that doesn't open -- no balcony.

Oddly, Azamara's outside cabins are smaller than its interior accommodations, with the former measuring just 143 square feet. Even more oddly, some of these cabins are equipped with sofa beds that can sleep up to two additional passengers.

Squeezing that many people into such a small space could prove to be tight, but we suspect the natural light will help lighten the mood.

tips for travellers azamara

Balcony cabins on Azamara ships

Azamara's balcony cabins come in two types.

Club Veranda Staterooms

These are the most basic balcony accommodations onboard, and they feature 175 square feet of living space, plus a 40-square-foot veranda for a total of 215 square feet.

For ships as old as Azamara's the number of balcony accommodations is surprising, with many rooms equipped with verandas where cruisers can sit and enjoy drinks and some fresh air on their own little swaths of deck.

Club Veranda Plus Staterooms

Although Club Veranda Plus rooms are the same square footage as Club Veranda Staterooms, this is the first cabin level where passengers will really see a difference between cabin types in the way of additional amenities.

Your cabin type from this level upward will be considered in conjunction with your Azamara Circle loyalty status (assuming you're a member) to determine the level of benefits you'll receive during your voyage.

All passengers booked in Club Veranda Plus accommodations will receive the standard offerings mentioned under previous cabin categories, plus complimentary Wi-Fi minutes, one free bag of laundry every seven days, one complimentary meal for two in a for-fee restaurant every seven days, priority embarkation and disembarkation and free in-cabin alcohol.

Suites on Azamara ships

Suites on Azamara's ships are divided into four types, and each provides its occupants with complimentary butler service.

tips for travellers azamara

Club Continent Suites

The smallest of the line's suite accommodations, Club Continent Suites are 266 square feet with 60-square-foot balconies. They include all of the amenities mentioned above, as well as a large seating area with a 55" flat-screen TV.

In addition to the TV and the increased square footage, some Club Continent Suite bathrooms also have bathtubs instead of only a stand-up shower.

Club Spa Suites

These suites are located near the Sanctum Spa on each vessel. In addition to soothing, natural decor, cruisers booked in these rooms can expect healthy snacks to be delivered daily. They can also enjoy in-cabin spa music and their very own glass-enclosed spa soaking bathtub.

Additionally, Club Spa Suites have rain showerheads and all of the amenities afforded to veranda cabins but with a larger (55") TV and 414 square feet of space, plus a 60-square-foot balcony.

Club Ocean Suites

These 478-square-foot luxury digs come with 173-square-foot verandas, a separate living room and bedroom setup (each room with a 55" TV); marble, shower-only bathrooms (except on Journey and Quest, which have bathtubs); dressing rooms with vanities; and additional closet space.

Further, passengers staying in these suites have access to all of the perks to which those in balcony cabins are entitled.

tips for travellers azamara

Club World Owner's Suites

The Club World Owner's Suites are Azamara's most lavish, offering everything afforded to those booked in Club Ocean Suites but with significantly more space -- 603 square feet with 233-square-foot balconies.

Like Club Ocean Suites, they have marble bathrooms (with bathtubs on Journey and Quest) and separate living room and bedroom areas, each with its own television (55" in the former and 40" in the latter), as well as the basic amenities mentioned above.

Bottom line

Although Azamara's ships are a bit on the older side, they ooze class. Cabins are stylishly decorated in neutrals and feature high-end furnishings and dark woods with plenty of storage space and extra touches, such as fresh-cut flowers and 24-hour room service, that will make you smile.

The number of choices isn't as vast as what you'll find onboard ships from some of the larger, more mainstream cruise lines, but there's something -- from insides to lavish suites -- to fit every taste.

Attend Social Events: Take advantage of the social events and activities organized by the cruise line. Participate in group excursions, join in on dance classes or cooking demonstrations, and attend onboard lectures and workshops. These events provide an excellent opportunity to meet fellow solo travelers and make new friends.

Take Advantage of Specialty Dining: Many cruise lines offer specialty dining options that are perfect for solo travelers. Consider dining at a shared table or specialty restaurant where you can meet and interact with other guests. It’s a great way to have engaging conversations while enjoying delicious food.

Engage with the Crew: The crew members on the ship are there to ensure you have a memorable and enjoyable experience. Take the time to engage with them, ask questions, and seek their recommendations. They can provide valuable insights and help you make the most of your cruise.

Join Solo Traveler Meetups: Some cruise lines organize special meetups and gatherings for solo travelers. Take advantage of these events to connect with other solo voyagers and form new friendships. It’s a fantastic way to share experiences, exchange travel tips, and create lasting memories together.

Azamara Club Cruises Tips For Travellers

Nov 14, 2018

In this episode you will discover 7 things you really should know before cruising with Azamara Club Cruises on a cruising vacation. I discuss things like who they are, who they compete with, who they are best for, what they do different to other cruise lines, what their fares cover and do not, the sort of facilities and entertainment, range of accommodation and more. Azamara Cruises is a small cruise lines with three ships that hold just 700 people. They focus on destinations and immersing guests into the varied and more out of way paces they can all into due to their smaller ships. They are an up-market line.

I travelled as a guest of Titan Travel on their Italian Lakes and Greek islands cruise that included 10 days on Azamara Pursuit. To find out about similar trips with them: https://www.titantravel.co.uk/holiday-types/ocean-cruising/ocean-cruise-lines/azamara

Don't let a dream vacation turn into a nightmare. Here are some travel tips for older adults

Before setting out on a vacation, there are some tips that can help ensure a safe and healthy trip.

DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: What tips can you offer retirees with health issues who are planning some trips? We’ve been looking forward to traveling again after staying home the past few years, but my husband has a heart condition and some back problems that worry me.

— Concerned Wife

More: Savvy Senior: If you're planning a trip with your grandkids, here are some tips

DEAR CONCERNED: A dream vacation can turn into a real nightmare if you get ill or injured while you’re away and aren’t prepared. Before setting out, here are some tips to help ensure a safe and healthy trip for you and your husband.

Get prepared: Before you go, talk with your doctor about your travel itinerary and what precautions you need to take before traveling. You should also have your doctor’s contact information with you when you travel, as well as a list of the medications you’re taking in case you need emergency medical care while you’re away.

It’s also a smart idea to locate health clinics or urgent care facilities near the areas you’re visiting. Your hotel can help you with this or a simple internet search can identify nearby health care services. If you’re traveling abroad, the U.S. Consulate or Embassy in the countries you’re visiting (go to step.state.gov to enroll your trip) is a good place to get a referral. Or use the International Society of Travel Medicine’s directory at ISTM.org.

If you’re traveling outside the U.S., you also need to find out the health conditions of the country you’re visiting and what, if any, vaccinations and/or preventative medications are recommended. See CDC.gov/travel or call 800-232-4636 to get this information.

Check your insurance: If you have private health insurance or a Medicare Advantage plan through an HMO or PPO that covers in-network doctors only, check your plan to find out what’s covered if you need medical care when traveling outside your geographic area.

Beneficiaries that have original Medicare are covered everywhere in the U.S. But if you’re traveling abroad, you won’t be covered outside the U.S. and its territories except in rare circumstances, although some Medicare Advantage plans and some Medigap supplemental policies do provide limited coverage. Most private health plans don’t pay health care costs outside the U.S. either. Be sure to check.

Many retirees traveling abroad purchase travel insurance with medical coverage, which may cover expenses if you cancel the trip, need to be treated while traveling or need to be evacuated for medical care. Make sure the policy will also cover your preexisting medical conditions. To shop and compare policies, go to TravelInsurance.com, InsureMyTrip.com or SquareMouth.com.

Organize your medications: Make sure you have a sufficient supply of medications to last the entire trip.

More from Savvy Senior: Here are some tips on helping keep older drivers safe on the roads

If traveling by air, you need to pack your medicine in your carry-on bag, so if your checked luggage gets lost or misdirected you won’t be without. It’s best to keep your medications in their original containers to get through airport security without delays. It’s also a good idea to bring along a note from your doctor that explains why you take these medications, especially if syringes or other medical supplies are involved.

For airport security requirements, go to TSA.gov — click on “Disabilities and Medical Conditions.” You can also call TSA Cares at 855-787-2227 before traveling with questions about screening policies, procedures and what to expect at the security checkpoint.

Maximize technology: Keep a list of your medications and other important health and medical information handy on your smartphone so you can easily access and share it with emergency health care providers when you’re traveling. Some good apps that can help with this are Backpack Health (BackpackHealth.com) and Capzule (Capzule.com).

Titan Travel Italian Lakes and Azamara Greek Islands Cruise Review

by Gary Bembridge · November 15, 2018

Oia Santorini Greece

Oia Santorini Greece

Planning, booking and going on vacation has become complex and time consuming. Although the Internet lets me become travel agent, tour organiser, hotel booker and taxi and transfer dispatcher, it has not made travelling simple or stress free. Every holiday becomes an intricate juggling act involving scoping out and researching itineraries, checking places and attractions to visit, finding places to stay and individually paying for each. Complex spreadsheets (in my case) tallying up the costs to stick within budget. It usually ends up costing more as I don’t take every detail into account.

Or, as I reminded myself a few months ago, I could go back to a simpler time and use a Titan Travel brochure to find a fully packaged holiday with a price that bundles everything in and leave it to them to worry about the details. They screen the itinerary, choose the right places to stay, best attractions to see, what meals to eat and where and even pick me up from home and return me to my door at the end of the trip. Titan Trave l are a UK-based travel company that for over 40 years have run their own curated escorted tours. Their brochures and website offer a mind-boggling range of land and cruise holidays around the world. I don’t think they exclude anywhere.

Having previously done a round Florida tour and a Tanzania safari with them, the holiday that I went for this time was a land and cruise combination called “Italian Lakes and Greek Isles”. It had a few nights in Lake Garda area and then 10 days cruising from Venice via the Greek islands to Athens. It appealed as I had only been to one of the places it called on, and meant experiencing the Azamara Pursuit, a 700-passenger ship that had recently joined the Azamara Club Cruises fleet.

Azamara Pursuit

DOOR-TO-DOOR

On a sunny day in early October the driver from Titan arrived on time and whisked us to London Gatwick for our British Airway flight. At the airport a Titan representative greets you, directs you to the check in and confirms arrangements on arrival. As this was only a partly escorted tour a Tour Manager did not fly with the group as they had on my previous Florida trip.

On arrival in Verona our Titan Host called Sara, who lived in the area, met us. This was the first chance to meet the others in the group. As with past Titan trips, there around 20 of us with ages ranging from 50s upwards. A mixture of couples, friends travelling together and a few solo travellers. Some knew each other from past trips and by the time we got to the coach with our bags, people were comparing past trip experiences and Titan stories. Loyalty to Titan is clear, as I also had found on previous trips.

Sirmione Lake Garda Italy

Sirmione Lake Garda Italy

LAKE GARDA ITALY

We spent three nights at the four-star Palace Hotel in Desenzano area of Lake Garda area, arriving late on the first night after our transfer from Verona. The hotel was set back from the lake, although from the rooftop pool area there were great views across to the lake. The hotel was comfortable and functional.

Palace Hotel Lake Garda

The next morning Sara, the local Titan Guide who was staying with us at the hotel, took us to Sirmione which is on a peninsula jutting into the lake. It was a beautiful place. After a short walking tour into the gorgeous Old City we had free time to explore. I walked through the narrow streets to the area where the villa of Maria Callas is before strolling along the banks of Lake Garda. Some of the group went on boat tours around the town.

After lunch we went to the town of Desenzano and had more free time to explore. We returned to the hotel and had a buffet dinner as a group in the hotel restaurant. This was a great opportunity to get to know the group better. It was a great ice breaker event as we got to find out more about people and their backgrounds.

Desenzano Lake Garda Italy

The next day was a free day and a shuttle was laid on from the hotel three times during the day to and from Desenzano. Most of the group headed in on the first bus around 10 am to explore the massive local market that operates every Tuesday. Others went on boat rides further up the lake. Throughout the day we came across members of the group and stop and chat.

TITAN COMMUNITY

Getting to know the group and share the travel experience is something that Titan travellers clearly relish, and I suspect is a key reason many come back. A community and bond developed across the trip and seemed to be an essential ingredient that added to the journey for Titan travellers. Whilst the company of travelling with others was clearly a draw for the solo travellers, it was enthusiastically embraced by everyone. Our fellow travellers were gregarious and enjoyed talking to each other. Across the two weeks we came across group members in ports or on board and often shared a drink, coffee or meal. Seeing friendly familiar faces everywhere added to the trip. I usually travel with my partner, but often solo for the blog and my Tips For Travellers YouTube channel , and I enjoyed the shared experience and community of a group trip as it added a social aspect to travelling.

Dinner on the free day was not included. The hotel did not serve dinner and local restaurants were some distance walking or taxi ride away. On the positive, Sara had drawn up suggestions of where to go, which she had given us that morning, and offered to call and make bookings and help arrange taxis. Having been pre-warned earlier in the day I bought some local food in the market and had a picnic at the hotel.

Gelato in Sirmione on Lake Garda

The next morning, we headed to Venice. Once again attention to detail of a Titan trip was in evidence as porter service to take bags to and from your room was included. On the two-hour journey to the port Sara told us about the region we passed through. As I reflected on our time in Lake Garda, I felt that although having free time was helpful to unwind, if there had been some organised tours or optional excursions for that day it would have enhanced the stay. I left feeling I had not seen as much as I should have of the lake and towns in this stunning region. Although we did experience a lot of the amazing gelato….

Sailing out of Venice

We were dropped close to the cruise check in and within a very brief time had boarded. One of the advantages of Azamara Pursuit being a smaller ship is that it docked in the canal and not the main port. We sailed out past the landmarks and St Mark’s Square. Stunning start as the sun was setting as we cruised out.

Azamara Pursuit joined the Azamara Club Cruises fleet in August 2018. Although the ship is relatively old, it has been dramatically upgraded and revamped to make a beautiful and classy ship. Being a smaller ship, the cabins are not large and the bathrooms cosy, but it is plush and the beds and bedding incredibly comfortable.

To find out more about Azamara Club Cruises and why this line appealed so much when I saw it in the Titan program watch my video about the line I made based on this trip.

Watch the video on YouTube:  https://youtu.be/c8ZT38hslxg

The first day was at sea and gave a chance to settle in and explore the ship. Across the next ten days we would get to experience some of the signature events that take place on all ships in the Azamara Club Cruises line. These included the White Night Party on the Pool Deck, AzAmazing Evening where the ship attended a special concert in a park in Corfu, Chocolate Buffet and Sea Day Brunch. You can see details of these in the video above.

Azamara Pursuit in Kotor Montenegro

Our first port was Kotor in Montenegro. This old town is in a long Fjord-like area which is stunning. I decided not to go on an excursion but made the long climb up the over 1,000 steps to the top of the mountain above the town. The views were phenomenal and worth the effort.

tips for travellers azamara

Excursions on the cruise segment were not included in the Titan Travel package. On Azamara there is a range of alcoholic drinks, wine, beer, soft drinks and speciality teas and coffees included. Wi-Fi is also not included and cost almost $20 per day if you bought a package for all days, and the same per hour if you bought it ad hoc. As we were mostly going to be in Europe, I did not buy internet and relied on 3G and 4G connections within European roaming and my provider allowances.

Dining in the two speciality restaurants were also extra cost, at $30 per person. Although you could buy a package of three for just $70 per person.

Old Fortress Corfu Greece

Old Fortress Corfu Greece

Corfu hop-on hop-off bus

The first Greek island we called on was Corfu . As the new port was not within easy walking distance of the main town, a complimentary shuttle was running. We decided to use the Hop-on Hop-off bus that left from the port gates as this headed more into the beach areas. We had a great day swimming near the Old Fortress. In the evening was the AzAmazing evening concert.

KATAKOLON (OLYMPIA)

Olympia near Katakolon Greece

Olympia near Katakolon Greece

Olympia Katakolon Greece

Olympia Katakolon Greece

Katakolon is on the Greek mainland and gateway to the ancient site of Olympia , home of the original Olympic Games. As it was over an hour away, I went on one of the cruise line excursions. I went for the transfer only option as I like to be more independent but am minded that the line will guarantee to wait for any excursions if they run late. Cruise lines do not wait for guests self-touring that miss the all-aboard time.

Olympia was a remarkable site and I had a great time walking around and visiting the museums. The price of entry was not included in this excursion option.

tips for travellers azamara

There was also a bike tour option, which is offered by Azamara in most ports. The ship carries 16 bikes and whenever possible offers a tour using them.

Gythion Greece

Gythion Greece

Gythion was our next island. I had not heard of it before and so was another where I booked an excursion. Like a number of the islands, this was a tender port and the ship moored off shore and passengers shuttled in on the tender boats. This was a pleasant surprise of a port, with a beautiful small harbour surrounded by bars, bakeries and restaurants.

Glyfada Cave Gythion

Glyfada Cave Gythion

I went on an excursion to the Glyfada Cave s. This vast rambling cave network with river was only discovered in 1949 and has not been fully explored. There was a 30-minute ride on a boat through them. It is tight and enclosed in parts as we dodged around stalagmites and stalactites. It was definitely not for anyone claustrophobic. It was a fascinating experience and unusual so pleased I made this choice.

Oia Santorini Greece

I finally go to see the iconic island off Santorini . This was also a tender stop with local boats, larger than the ship tenders, making transfers fast as they could hold a lot of passengers. We caught one of the boats to Oia as knew this is the town where the famous images of the island are taken. On the dockside at Fira, where we were moored, there were two providers offering trips by boat to Oia which included a bus up the huge hill (over 300 metres high) into the town and then transfer by bus back to Fira.

Oia Santorini Greece

It was a great choice as we got to explore the winding narrow streets, the craft shops and get pictures of the stunning views. We had lunch in a cliffside restaurant before getting the bus to Fira. It was very busy as another ship was also in and the lines for the cable car down to the dockside were long, so we walked down the over 800 steps down. There was an option to get a donkey ride down, but we gave that a pass.

tips for travellers azamara

Azamara stays late in most ports and we only set sail at 10pm. This was the night of the White Party.

Palace of Knossos Crete Greece

Palace of Knossos Crete Greece

A busier and more urbanised stop was next: Heraklion in Crete. This is where the renowned Palace of Knossos  which dates back to the Bronze Age is. I took a cruise line excursion there, although it was a relatively short and inexpensive taxi ride or hop-on hop-off bus ride from the port. However, I wanted to hear the stories and history and so decided a tour would be best. It definitely was as it was helpful to hear about the background of the Minoan culture and have explained where the original and reconstructed parts of the ruins were. It was the centre of their culture and power and no-one really knows why the Minoans left when the development was clearly so large and significant, although it is most likely due to volcanic activity and possibly wars.

tips for travellers azamara

The tour took us into the main town and after a short walking tour we had the option to stay and walk back to the ship, which we did so we could explore more and eat in one of the local restaurants.

Patmos Greece

Patmos Greece

An advantage of cruising on a line with smaller ships doing a more intensive tour of the islands is that we got to go to islands not usually on the cruise circuit. Patmos was one. This island is best known for St John who wrote Revelations, the last book in the New Testament. He was inspired to write it when Jesus appeared to him in a cave part way up the mountain. You can visit this now as well as the Monastery of St John high up on the hill. I got a taxi up, which was easy to catch from where the ship tender boats dropped us.

tips for travellers azamara

Once back down in the town we toured the attractive town, had lunch and enjoyed one of the beaches close to the centre.

Mykonos Town Greece

Mykonos Town Greece

Mykonos Town Greece

Mykonos Town Greece Waterside Bars

The party island of Mykonos was the final port of call. Popular and trendy in the 1970s and 1980s with celebrities like Jacqui Onassis, it had fallen out of favour but is now back and very much in vogue. We took the free shuttle bus from the port into Mykonos Town and strolled the complex and winding streets that constantly threw up surprises of small craft stores, restaurants and bars. We made our way to the Windmills on the opposite side of the town to take the required photos of this Mykonos landmark. We then sat at one of the popular waterside bars having a drink and watching people. It was a great town and had a splendid day exploring.

Acropolis Athens Greece

Parthenon Acropolis Athens Greece

Acropolis Athens Greece

Acropolis Athens Greece

We sailed overnight to Athens and docked early. Disembarkation was calmer and less frantic than on large ships, and we strolled off to meet our guide and bus for the day around 7.45am. We had received specific Titan disembarkation luggage times and instructions. Within minutes we were whisked off for a morning visit to the Acropolis before the crowds and the relatively new Acropolis Museum.

After free time for lunch we were taken to the airport and boarded our British Airways flight back to London. After collecting our luggage at Heathrow, we emerged to find the Titan Rep waiting with the various drivers who then took us home. We live about 25 minutes from Heathrow, so our journey was short. Some of the group had a few hours ride ahead of them as Titan will take you home wherever that may be.

Azamara Pursuit in Katakolon Greece

Azamara Pursuit in Katakolon Greece

Titan use familiar airlines like British Airways. As it is a group booking, you cannot select seats or check in advance online and have to do it at the airport and so seat allocation could be an issue, although it was not on this trip.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Simplicity, being taken care of from door-to-door at every stage, clarity and transparency of the total vacation cost and the travelling community were the four things that I felt were the main benefits of going on this (and other) Titan trips.

It was a relief to be able to pick a destination and rely on their expertise to ensure that the places and sights visited were the essential ones, accommodation had been screened and reliable and you had someone expert with you to help sort issues out, or the fall-back option of the Titan 24-hour helpline number to call when they were not on hand.

Being collected from your home and shepherded through every stage of the holiday is reassuring and a welcome development and anecdote to the “do it all yourself” alternative. As I found on this trip, there was still enough time to be independent with free time in Lake Garda and on the Azamara cruise where we could explore ports the way we wanted. Most of the group, like us, self-toured in most ports.

So all there is to do now is grab the Titan brochure and decide on my next escorted travel adventure!

If you are considering doing similar trip to the Greek Islands with Titan, I created this video of the must-see places and things to do in each based on this trip.
