Titleist Tour Soft Vs. Callaway Supersoft Golf Balls Comparison Overview

A lot of golfers fail to realize just how much of a difference their golf balls make. You could be knocking on the door of the mid or low handicap range but being held back by your golf balls.

In the following article, we are going to be talking about our experience with the Titleist Tour Soft and the Callaway Supersoft balls.

The reason we wanted to test these balls side-by-side is because we felt that these are both balls that could potentially elevate the game of mid to high handicappers looking to take that next big leap.

Titleist Tour Soft Golf Balls Overview

The Titleist Tour Soft balls have a 2-piece construction and a low compression rating. However, the real star here is the ball speed they produce.

We were taken aback at how fast these balls play considering their low compression rating. Off the tee, you can expect average distance of 190-200 yards even if you have only a moderate swing speed.

The minimal layers and the large, 1.6” diameter core help with carry distance and the 342 dimples help cut through the air surprisingly well.

The Titleist Tour Soft balls also feature a composite ionomer cover material.

While not as thin or soft as pure urethane, the cover material of these balls are still fairly responsive.

Back and side spin is increased by a small margin on short approaches and with your short irons. These balls should also be plenty soft for most kinds of players.

Callaway Supersoft Golf Balls Overview

The incredibly low compression rating of these 2-piece balls will be congenial for a very narrow niche of players.

Namely, players who just picked up the game. The Callaway Supersoft balls have a compression rating of 50 so you can barely feel them when you pure them off the tee.

They do however produce impressive launch angles which can be a boon to players who typically find themselves in tight lies on the deck.

These balls are a lot of fun on the range but if you are really looking to step up your game, they probably won’t help as much as the Titleist Tour Soft balls.

Overall, we liked the more well-rounded performance you get with the Titleist Tour Soft balls. They are soft enough to feel nice but offer a tighter shot dispersion than the Callaway Supersoft balls.

The Titleist Tour Soft actually played quite long off the tee.

The larger core made sure that no energy was lost even on faster swings and the spin rate off the tee was much lower than around the greens too.

Performance from the Rough

This is where we struggled a bit with these balls.

The ionomer cover tends to bury itself in particularly tall rough.

Performance from the Fairway

The Titleist Tour Soft balls played pretty well from the fairway and gave pretty good bounce on long approaches, reacting well on the 2nd or 3rd bounce.

Performance Off the Tee  

You could barely feel when you made contact with these balls.

That’s how soft they were. They also maintain an exceptionally straight flight which will work wonders for your slice

The Callaway Supersoft balls performed surprisingly similar to the Titleist Velocity from the rough.

They launch really high so long as you are able to cut through the turf and they stop dead in place. Great for ball placement, not so great when there’s wind.

We liked the fact that the Supersoft balls maintained their straight flight with hybrids and irons from the deck.

As long as you have a clear path to the pin or fairway, these balls will serve you well.

Who Are The Titleist Tour Soft Balls For?

The Titleist Tour Soft balls are truly premium category balls and would work best with single digit handicaps.

More importantly, if you are swinging around 95+ MPH from the tee then you will absolutely love these balls.

Even though they have a 2-piece construction and lack a urethane cover, they yield excellent distance with fast swings.

How Are They With Short Irons?

The feedback and response of the Titleist Tour Soft balls with short irons was comparable to that of the Bridgestone E12 Soft balls.

The cover is a bit thinner than the Bridegstone balls so you get excellent feel so long as your short irons are decent.

Whether you need to work the ball on a tricky green or bite down on a fast one with some back spin, you will find that the Titleist Tour Soft can accommodate.

On The Green

You will have to get used to the Titleist Tour Soft balls a bit on the green.

They have sort of the opposite problem that the Bridgestone E12 Soft balls have in that they make you work for it if you need extended roll.

Still, the other performance factors more than make up for this shortcoming.

Who are the Callaway Supersoft Balls for?

These balls are great for beginners struggling with distance and accuracy.

The Callaway Supersoft balls will help you stay on the fairway more often and give you the distance you’ve been missing.

How are they With Short Irons?

The barely there feel of these balls leaves something to be desired when you are attacking delicate, short approaches. The high bounce doesn’t help much either.

On the Green

The Callaway Supersoft balls perform surprisingly well on short and long putts with impressive roll control and soft feel off the face.

Features And Benefits

The Callaway Supersoft golf balls are an ultra-low compression ball with a soft feel and durable cover .

They are available in several different colors, and they even come in a slightly larger version called the Supersoft Magna . (Yes, a larger golf ball!) 

Typically speaking, two-piece golf balls do not have a great feel. In fact, when I was playing competitively, I wouldn’t even consider playing a two-piece golf ball; however, things have changed.

The feel on the new Callaway Supersoft is significantly improved with the new Trionomer cover. 

Soft feel around the greens is essential for scoring, and this combination of materials allows you to get the feel you need while still have a rather large and solid core underneath. 

The Supersoft Golf Balls have very low spin from the tee and mediocre spin around the greens. The very fast ball speeds you can get from the Callaway Supersoft golf ball are partially because of the advanced core material and design.

If you want to hit the golf ball a long way, you can do so with the Supersoft. 

When it comes to greenside spin, the Supersoft will perform like most other two piece balls. They have a good soft feel, but they won’t have that drop and stop technology like a Titleist Pro V1 would have. 

Compression

Golf ball compression seems to keep getting lower and lower. At one point in the golf world, we considered 50 to be very low. The Callaway Supersoft golf ball has a compression rating of 38 . Can’t say we ever thought that was possible. 

If you have a slower swing speed and worry about your ability to compress the ball, the Callaway Supersoft is a great choice. Making it the perfect golf ball for seniors . Mid swing speeds will also enjoy the lower compression.

However, high swing speeds may feel as though they leave a few yards on the table when hitting the Callaway Supersoft golf balls. 

Most 2 piece golf balls are considered distance golf balls . The Callaway Supersoft Golf ball is no exception.

Golfers that want more distance (the majority of golfers) will find that the construction and material makeup of the Callaway Supersoft allows for ideal ball flight and tons of distance. 

The low spin from the tee will also allow the ball to roll when it hits the fairway. In addition, the low drag simple pattern creates a bit higher ball flight as well. Certainly, the road to distance comes from keeping the ball in the air as long as possible. 

Years ago, the concept was to get the golf ball to roll for as long as you could. This mentality has changed, and golfers finally understand that time in the air equates to more distance.

Certainly, this would have helped me spend a bit less time working on that knockdown driver shot as a kid! 

Even though the cover of the Supersoft golf balls is quite soft, it is surprisingly durable. The new Trionomer material does an excellent job of reducing side spin and those nasty cuts that we are all known to put in a golf ball. 

The Hex design dimple pattern that Callaway golf has had in play now for many years also seems to be very durable.

If you are afraid that the Callaway Supersoft golf balls are a soft feeling low compression ball that will rip open on the first tee box, you are mistaken.

Callaway golf was prepared for your swing speed when they developed this ball. 

If you are a golfer that shops for golf balls based on price, you will be pleasantly surprised by the Callaway Supersoft Golf Balls pricing.

The price is more than fair and, in fact, sometimes a bit cheaper than other similar 2 piece golf balls on the market. 

We also like that Callaway Golf does not raise the pricing on the colored Callaway Supersoft Golf Ball.

If you think that pink, orange or green will help you focus and find the ball that goes astray, you can purchase these balls for the same price.

This category of golf balls built for the mid to high handicapper is the largest one, and there are many options to choose from. 

Callaway Superhot Golf Balls

As we mentioned, the Callaway Golf Supersoft Golf Balls are a two piece choice with lots of distance and performance . However, with the Superhot, you are going to get three pieces. 

A three-piece ball will naturally offer more performance around the green and some increased spin in the short irons. 

The Superhot golf balls are great for golfers with a slightly more advanced game and can truly feel the difference between the golf balls they play.

The Superhot still features the ever-popular hex aerodynamics that Callaway believes in so firmly.

TaylorMade Project S

The TaylorMade Project S Golf Balls are a two piece ball with the same price point as the Supersoft. You will find that for a three piece design, the spin rates and feel are good for this TaylorMade.

A two-layer core adds quite a bit of speed , especially for a beginner or person looking for some extra speed on their shots. 

The Project S also has an ionomer cover that helps keep the driver spin way down. The Project S’s compression is not relatively as low as the Supersoft, and therefore it is not as soft feeling as the Callaway.

Overall you will find that if speed is what you are looking for, you get plenty of speed for the cost with this product.

Titleist DT True Feel

If you have been golfing for a while, you know that Titleist golf balls are some of the best on the market. The spin rate, features, and soft feel of this ball are going to be very similar to the Callaway Supersoft. 

When we do a golf ball review, we always make sure that we find products that perform as they are advertised. The DT True Fee l claims to be the softest feeling ball that Titleist has to offer.

From playing with this ball, we can tell you that it certainly is a soft feeling product for a Titleist. 

The Ionomer blend that Titleist uses for the cover of these golf balls helps players feel as though they have lots of control around the green. The good news is that this added control does not take away from the distance off the tee. 

You can purchase the DT True Feel in a few different colors, making the overall performance aspects of this ball very similar to that of the Callaway Golf Supersoft. 

As you probably picked up on in our Callaway Supersoft review, there are not too many negative things to be said about this golf ball.

If you are a golfer with a very fast swing speed, it may be best to look for something without such a low compression.

However, the majority of golfers will benefit significantly from the ability to compress the ball a bit more. Distance is something that even great players are looking for in their shots.

With Supersoft golf balls’ price, combined with the feel and distance, this is a ball that is certainly worth trying this season.

Some of the ball’s technology enhances your ball’s lift, therefore increasing the carry and total distance possible with the shot . The golf ball is one of the best for beginners and average golfers who want a premium soft ball.

The low spin of the Supersoft golf balls isn’t a bad thing, either. Too much spin could hurt a bad or average golfer. If a beginner golfer has a slice, it could be worse with a ball that spins a lot because it will be even more dramatic off a slice!

Titleist lead the way among the best premium golf balls in the market and the Titleist AVX that launched in 2018 was their entry to this growing soft golf ball sector.

We compare our Titleist AVX golf ball 2022 review  to the Chrome Soft, so get your cushion out and sit back as we go soft on this ball test.

The Titleist AVX is a three piece ball that comes in white or yellow and features a 322 dimple cover of circles of multiple sizes as is traditional on most golf balls.

The Callaway Chrome soft cover is a four piece ball that features 332 of the usual hexagon dimples in white or yellow. You can also get the Chrome Soft with a choice of alignment lines in both colours with the Triple Track lines or the Truvis pentagons.

Whilst these are both marketed as soft golf balls, the AVX sounds the softer of the two on chips and putts. The extra layer in the ball construction of the Chrome Soft may have something to do with this, so it will be personal preference as to how soft you want it, as both balls are at the soft end of the scale.

In testing at using Trackman  at  SGGT studios the Chrome Soft was flighing little higher than the AVX, particularly on the irons, predominantly due to the fact that is spinning more. 

This is more due to the fact that the AVX is a low spinning ball and the Chrome Soft is more in line with the median spin rates of the premium sector of the ball market.

The spin and launch of each ball will have a direct effect on distance and at my swing speed, which is around 100mph with the driver, I was getting more yardage from the relatively firmer Chrome Soft. 

This is not unusual with softer golf balls and if you swing speed is mid to low then the AVX might produce closer results for you.

Whilst they both have cast urethane covers, the extra spin of the Chrome Soft is more responsive on chips and pitches around the green than the AVX. On full shots, the shallower landing angle of the AVX into the green also meant it struggled to give as much control as the Chrome Soft here too.

The Callaway Chrome Soft has the edge here for the majority of players who want a soft premium golf ball as it is more of an all round performer. It provides good distance, particularly at mid to high swing speeds, and the extra control around the greens will help with the short game too.

However the Chrome Soft is a high spin soft ball, so if you need to reduce the spin rates on your shots then that is where the Titleist AVX comes in as it offers very low spin, soft feel and a cast urethane cover.

Using a launch monitor with a driver and 7-iron is the best way to make this decision, but if that is not available to you, then try some chips into a green and see which ball gives you the most control.

It may seem like everyone around you has everything all figured out in terms of gear but golf balls are one of the hardest pieces of gear to fit for. The reality is that many players struggle to find gold balls that suit their game even after a few years of playing.

That’s why we have been covering golf balls so extensively as of late. We know how difficult it can be to find a good ball that fits your game. But we admit that our purposes aren’t 100% altruistic. After all, it is a lot of fun testing out different balls in the name of science.

But in any case, our reviews are geared towards elevating your game and today’s review is no exception. Today we will be taking a look at a couple of distance golf balls.

Callaway Supersoft Balls

The Callaway Supersoft balls represent the pinnacle of soft golf ball performance in multiple categories. They are the softest balls that Callaway makes at a compression factor of 38.

And according to Callaway representatives the Supersofts actually have a zero compression factor when measured by the PGA compression scale. There’s no doubt that these balls are incredibly soft – you can feel it on every drive.

But Callaway has also seen fit to outfit their Supersofts with a soft ionomer cover and HEX aerodynamic dimples (332 to be exact). The cover makes a noticeable difference on putts and even short approach shots. And, as with many soft balls in this price range, the Supersofts feature 2-piece construction.

Titleist Velocity

These balls aren’t as soft as soft as the Callaway’s. In fact, they have high compression cores. But, like the Callaway Supersoft balls the Titleist Velocity balls feature a 2-piece design. The Titleist Velocity sport the proprietary NaZ+ cover material that allows for pretty good feel and control around greens.

The LSX core of these balls is definitely softer than other Titleist balls we have used in the past, but we still wouldn’t consider these soft golf balls. But they are truly distance balls. We were able to get good range with them and they fly as straight as you would expect from a softer distance ball.

The 328 tetrahedral dimples on the Titleist Velocity balls are also pretty good for achieving the loft and height required for carry shots from the fairway.

Drive Performance

If you are a slower speed swinger, then the Callaway Super soft balls will definitely be more your speed. They are very forgiving and still yield really good distance for slower swing speeds. Plus, they fly exceptionally straight.

The Titleist Velocity balls were also very straight but weren’t as long as the Callaway balls. Off the tee, we have to say that the distances we were getting with these 2 balls were comparable. But it was with the shorter irons that we were seeing that the Titleist Velocity balls weren’t yielding as much distance.

Fairway and Approach Performance

This is where we really saw a divergence between these two balls. While the Titleist Velocity balls weren’t getting us as far as we would have hoped with our shorter irons, they had lower spin which made them a dream to control on approaches.

The Callaway Super softs got us the distance we wanted but the ball spin rate was too high and more often than not, they would roll too long and too far.

Putting Performance

We liked the harder feel of the Titleist Velocity balls once we were on the green. They were easier to control and work. Once again, the Callaway Supersoft balls had too much roll which you really had to be careful about with your putts.

The prices for these 2 golf balls are almost identical. In either case, you are generally looking at about $23 for a set of either ball. Please keep in mind that these prices are for a dozen golf balls.
