It is best to base your selection around topics you care about — whether this happens to be architecture, food or history. 1. Hero/Protagonist

A story needs a character for the audience to cheer for. One they can relate to. Or one they will remember.

To create suspense, the main character needs a goal. The audience will listen in anticipation to find out whether the character succeeds.

3. Clear Incident

An obstacle must get in the character’s way. This makes it all the more interesting. Can they overcome it?

4. Harness emotion

You want the audience to feel what your characters are feeling. Empathy helps to connect the audience with your characters.

5. Add twists and turns

Unpredictable stories make the best ones. To keep the audience on their toes, throw unexpected twists and turns into the mix.

6. End with a punchline

Every story has a resolution, where typically the hero saves the day. No matter what type of story you share, aim to wrap up in a cheerful way — ending with a joke.

On your next tour, give storytelling a try. You might be surprised by your natural storytelling abilities and have a lot of fun while you’re at it.

Hello everyone. My name is Luca. On behalf of Suntan Tours I'd like to welcome you all to Los Cabos. The bus ride to your hotel will take about fifteen minutes. Right now I'd like to take a minute to familiarize you with the area and discuss some brief safety precautions. Firstly, I ask that you remain seated until we reach our destination and that you not eat or drink while on the bus. Secondly, please realize that it is against the law to get drunk in public. Enjoy your vacation, but do drink responsibly and do not drink and drive.

[Describing the location]

I promise you are going to enjoy your stay here in San Jose, Los Cabos. This is a beautiful, quiet city where you can relax, sit by the beach, enjoy great meals and feel very safe. You can walk into town and enjoy the fountains or take a moonlit walk along the water. Please do not swim here. This is not a safe place to swim because there is a strong undertow. Cabos San Lucas is the place to go if you want to enjoy swimming in the ocean. You can take a short bus ride from your hotel. There you will also enjoy entertainment and dancing.

[Introducing special events and offers]

Suntan tours offers a variety of special discounts depending on your travel plans. We have golf packages, as well as guided whale boat tours, and fishing charters. There will be a short information session at 1pm in the lobby of the hotel tomorrow where you can learn all about these offers. We recommend that you do not purchase packages from street vendors as they are not always 100 percent reliable. They also may charge you more than what they say. Please take my advice and allow Suntan tours to book all of your day trips and activities while you are here.

[Offering advice]

If you need to exchange your dollars into pesos, please use a bank or money exchange. We don't recommend exchanging your money at the hotel because you won't get a fair rate. Some restaurants will accept American or Canadian money, but you are better off to exchange your money and pay with pesos. Or, if you prefer, you can always use your credit cards. Also, if you want to get around the city, or travel to Cabos San Lucas, we recommend that you take the local bus rather than a taxi. The bus costs about one American dollar, and the driver can give you change if you don't have the exact amount. If you do decide to take a taxi make sure that you negotiate a price before you go.

We're going to be pulling up to the hotel in just a few minutes. Please sit back and enjoy the view of the ocean on the left hand side of the bus as we enter the city. I ask that you remain in your seats until we have come to a complete stop. Javier will be meeting us at the bus to help you with your bags. A Good Tour Guide: Introduces themselves, welcomes you to the tour, and gives a brief breakdown of the schedule.

A Good Tour Guide: Shows his/her group all the sights on the tour.

A Great Tour Guide: Maximizes enjoyment on the tour

Action Step:  Do some research to map out when the best sights will be the least crowded.

Listens to what his/her group wants

Action Step: At the request of one of your group members, show any additional sights that they want to see.

Recommend the best places to eat, shop, and buy souvenirs

Action Step: Recommend the best places to eat shop and buy souvenirs.  Don’t base your recommendation off of a commission you may receive from a store.  Travellers have a good sense for when they are being pushed into a retail situation that benefits the guide.  Emphasize quality and experience.

3. Time Management

A Good Tour Guide: Will make sure that you stick to the schedule and see all the sights on time.

A Great Tour Guide: Is Flexible

Action Step: Be aware of the start and end time of the tour but if your customers are enjoying a particular sight, let them stay a while.

Doesn’t Rush

Action Step: Don’t rush your customers, remind yourself that you are on their time.

4.  Commentary

A Good Tour Guide: Gives a basic historical and cultural background of the sights.

A Great Tour Guide: Is a story teller

Action Step: Be passionate about your story telling – Use arm gestures, a high speaking volume, and facial expressions.

  • That you are willing to hear what everyone has to say.
  • That you will respond as quickly and fairly as possible to the complaint.

Be Professional

Since it can be difficult to deal with angry guests, train your staff ahead of time so that they are familiar with the procedure on how to deal with complaints.

Here are a few good rules of thumb to follow:

  • Respond quickly: The guest will want to feel like you heard them and that you care about their complaint.  Dealing with the complaint quickly also means the customer is less likely to post their complaint on a site like TripAdvisor.
  • Show your guest that you are listening: Use your body language to show the guest that you are actively listening to their complaint – Nod your head, keep eye contact, and verbalize that you understand.
  • Thank your guest: Thank your tour guests for raising their concerns.
  • Be patient, calm and empathetic: The guest may be acting unreasonable, but that doesn’t mean that you should too – If you remain patient, calm and empathetic then they will likely mimic your approach.
  • Verbalize how you will manage the complaint: Letting the guest know what your plan is to manage the complaint will make them feel satisfied. Breakdown what happens next and when.
  • Involve your guest in the solution: Ask them if there is anything that they would like you to do to solve the problem.
  • Update your guest on the status of their complaint: Let your guest know that you haven’t forgotten about them and where their complaint is in the filing process.

Send a follow-up email asking your guest how they are doing – If necessary, send a discount or promotional offer.

Remember that your reputation is on the line and unhappy customers will likely share their tour experience – So deal with complaints as best as you can!

Organizing a large group of customers comes with a set of challenges – late guests being one of them.

Set Precedent

Set a time that the tour starts and make sure the tour actually starts at that time – As the tour guide you should be there about 15 minutes early to prepare anyways.

Being at the start location on time and starting on time shows your guests that you are taking your job and the tour seriously.

Reminder-Notifications

Set Reminders

Communicate as much as possible with your guests – Along with the tour’s itinerary, send text or email reminders 3-4 hours before the tour reminding your guests of the time and the location.

Be Strategic

Choose a strategic location for the start of the tour – Choosing a place that is difficult to find will increase the likelihood of late guests.

Send a map with a clearly marked route to the start location.

Be Prepared

Prepare a system for your late guests – Let them know where they can reach you or the tour office to find out your next location

Or send them the times and locations of all the spots on the tour so that they can meet you there.

If there is a crucial time and place that all the guests must be – for example, if the van leaves at 8:30 sharp, be clear and emphasize this point!

Remind them a few times that if they aren’t there on time, they will be left behind, but in the nicest way possible, of course.

You can teach yourself to turn toward the group. To help learn this habit, consider identifying one person in the group that you will look at when you first start talking. To ensure the whole group feels engaged, be sure to move your gaze to other visitors soon after you start talking.

This strategy provides you with a consistent cue to help you develop the habit of turning towards the group when you start talking. After a while, you’ll naturally turn toward the group when you’re giving your tours. 

4. You don’t have to know everything

As a tour guide, you purposefully try to learn everything you can about the locations on your tour. That said, you don’t have to know everything. You may have a guest who has unique expertise or insider’s experience. Let them share with the group. Everyone will have a richer experience, and you can potentially incorporate this information into future tours. 

5. Avoid exaggerating information

You want your tours exciting and engaging, but you also want to be known as a credible and knowledgeable expert. Therefore, resist the urge to exaggerate information. Your guests won’t trust what you say or recommend the tour if they discover you’ve provided inaccurate details or facts. 

Sometimes exaggeration can sneak in when telling stories, so make sure your stories are based on facts and verifiable information. 

6. Provide anecdotes when possible

Telling personal anecdotes can provide a special touch and experience for your guests. These can make the tour more engaging and help you connect with visitors. 

While you can plan ahead of time what anecdotes you will tell, being able to spontaneously provide anecdotes and insights tailored to the group can help enhance the overall experience. You can take a local improv class to help practice this skill.

7. Be punctual (and ideally early)

When people are on vacation, they often have carefully orchestrated plans. If one part starts late or goes too long, they may miss another planned opportunity. Your guests will appreciate you starting and ending your tours on time. Being punctual will help build their confidence in you as a professional and expert. 

When it’s possible, try to arrive early for tours. This strategy will give you time to get to know participants before the tour starts. This strategy helps you build rapport and start learning what types of information they want so you can tailor the experience to their needs. You’ll also be able to answer any questions people have about the area before the tour begins. 

8. Be attentive to guests’ needs 

Being attentive to your guests’ needs is about more than just guiding them from one point to another. It’s about creating a comfortable and enjoyable experience. For instance, if you notice guests looking tired, suggest a short break or a slower pace. If a particular topic sparks interest, consider diving deeper into that subject. This adaptability shows that you’re not just following a script but are genuinely committed to providing a fulfilling experience.

Moreover, being attentive means being prepared to answer questions or provide solutions to unexpected issues. Whether it’s a question about local dining options or needing assistance with accessibility, your readiness to help can significantly enhance guest experience. 

9. Be passionate 

Your enthusiasm and passion for the subject matter are infectious and can enhance the tour experience. When you speak about the history, culture, or landmarks with genuine excitement, it engages your guests and makes the information more compelling. This enthusiasm can transform an effective tour guide into a truly 5-star tour guide.  

However, it’s important to balance your enthusiasm with the ability to read your audience. Some guests may prefer a more subdued approach, while others might enjoy high energy. Tailoring your enthusiasm to suit the group’s dynamics is key. 

10. Use humor 

A well-timed joke or a witty remark can lighten the mood and enhance the overall experience. It helps in breaking the ice and making even the most difficult customers feel more comfortable. However, it’s crucial to exercise guest discretion. Tailor your humor to the audience and avoid jokes that could be misunderstood or that touch on sensitive topics. The goal is to add a light-hearted touch to your tour, not to make anyone uncomfortable. 

11. Offer personal recommendations

Take a nod from hotel concierges by offering personal recommendations towards the end of the tour. This adds a special touch to the experience. Sharing your favorite local spots, eateries, or hidden gems provide guests with insider knowledge they might not find in guidebooks. These recommendations should be tailored to the interests of the group and can range from the best places to catch a sunset, to a local café known for its specialty dishes.

12. Invite feedback and follow-up

Inviting feedback at the end of the tour is a great way to show that you value your guests’ opinions and are committed to improving your service. Encourage them to share their thoughts and suggestions. This feedback can be invaluable in refining your tours and making them more enjoyable for future guests.

Additionally, offering to stay in touch for any further questions or recommendations can leave a positive lasting impression. It shows that you’re not just interested in providing a service but are genuinely invested in their experience. This openness to feedback and follow-up can lead to more positive reviews and recommendations, which are essential for a successful tour guiding career.

13. End with a memorable conclusion

Summarize the key points of the tour and leave your guests with a final thought, story, or anecdote that encapsulates the essence of the experience. This could be a poignant story, a surprising fact, or a humorous observation. A strong conclusion ties the entire tour together and gives your guests something to remember and talk about long after the tour has ended.

Moreover, a memorable conclusion is an opportunity to not only thank your guests, but it gives you an easy opportunity to ask for a review. This can not only increase the chance that you’ll get a nice tip but you can also wind up with more customers from the 5-star reviews they leave.  

In sum, being a tour guide is a fun and interesting job that allows you to interact with various people. Like many professions, the more you practice and work on building your skills, the better everyone’s experience, including yourself.

Your Step-by-Step Jikoshoukai Guide Learn the basics, practice, and create an advanced Japanese self-introduction

When you start learning Japanese or are visiting Japan for the first time , there are few words to learn right away:

Once you've mastered those three, you need to learn your jikoshoukai.

Jikoshoukai 自己紹介 ( じこしょうかい ) is the Japanese word for "self-introduction." In theory, this is similar to how you would introduce yourself in your own culture. Say hello, say your name, tell a little about yourself. But in practice, there are cultural differences and set procedures you should stick to. You only get one first impression, so it's important to learn how to do it right.

We'll start by teaching you the basic Japanese self-introduction, then cultural subtleties, and finally a ton of extra grammar and vocabulary you can use to talk about yourself with your new Japanese friends.

Jikoshoukai Vocabulary

Writing your jikoshoukai, 1. first name and family name, 2. occupation, 3. don't talk about yourself too much, 4. bowing vs. handshake, 5. holding your hands behind your back, 6. don't bow while talking, business cards, "nice to meet you", "please be kind to me", where you are from, your school, where you live, hobbies and proficiencies, plans for the future, only the beginning, how to jikoshoukai.

Going to Japan, but don't know Japanese? Don't worry. You can jikoshoukai. The Japanese self-intro has a standard order and set phrases, so even beginners can meet and greet in Japanese.

  • How do you do?

The set phrase hajimemashite 初めまして ( はじ     ) either comes from the verb hajimeru 始める ( はじ   ) , which means "to start," or it's a shortened form of 初めて ( はじ   ) お 目 ( め ) にかかりまして. Though etymologists aren't sure of the word's true origin, hajimemashite implies beginning or doing something for the first time . Most people think of it as saying "How do you do?" or "Nice to meet you."

  • 私 ( わたし ) は [name] と 申します ( もう    ) 。
  • My name is [name].

The breakdown of this sentence is easier than it looks. It has three parts:

  • 私 ( わたし ) は - The first word 私 means "I" or "me." It's followed by the particle は which indicates the topic of the sentence. In this case, 私 is the topic.
  • [name] - Your name.
  • と 申します ( もう    ) - One meaning of the verb 申す is "to be called." It's paired with the particle と and conjugated to 申します。 This is a polite phrase, so it's safe to use in almost any situation.

When you put them all together, you get something along the lines of "I am called [name]" or "My name is [name]."

  • よろしくお 願い ( ねが  ) します。
  • Please be kind to me.

The final piece of the puzzle is よろしくお 願い ( ねが  ) します. It doesn't translate well to English, which is why we wrote a whole article about it . In a self-intro situation, it means something like "Please be kind to me." It's often translated as "Nice to meet you." This isn't technically correct, though it carries a similar feeling.

Now that you've got the basic building blocks down, it's time to put it together. At its simplest, the jikoshoukai sequence is:

  • はじめまして。 私 ( わたし ) は (name) と 申 ( もう ) します。よろしくお 願 ( ねが ) いします。
  • How do you do? My name is (name). Please be kind to me.

See? Not so hard. When you're getting ready to meet Japanese people for the first time, write this out and practice until it flows. If you're a beginner at Japanese , you don't need any more than this.

Jikoshoukai Etiquette

It's great to know the words to say when introducing yourself in Japanese, but how you say those words will make or break your jikoshoukai.

There are cultural differences to be aware of. They're subtle, so if you miss them it probably won't be counted against you. But paying attention to details like these can give you an extra social edge when you first meet a new Japanese friend.

In English, people usually introduce themselves by their first names or full names. When you give your full name, the first name comes first and the family name afterward.

In Japanese, people usually introduce themselves by their family names or full names. When they introduce their full name, the family name comes first and the first name comes second.

Revealing one or two of your strengths is fine, but listing all your amazing abilities will annoy others and make you seem over-confident.

In English, when you asked what you do for work, you give a brief summary of your job, or the name of your profession.

In Japan, it's common to answer only, " 会社員 ( かいしゃいん ) です。" (I'm an office worker./I work for a company./I'm a salaryman.)

However, if you introduce yourself to someone in a business setting, mention your company in your self-intro. For example:

  • Tofuguのコウイチと 申します ( もう    ) 。
  • I'm Koichi from Tofugu.

This concept goes along with our next point…

Japanese people sometimes say lightly self-deprecating things as a form of humility, but it's usually followed by something positive (or the positivity is implied). For example:

  • 至らない点が多いかもしれませんが、頑張りますので、よろしくお 願い ( ねが  ) します
  • I might have many flaws, but I'll do my best so please be kind to me.

You don't have to say anything like this (in fact, we advise you don't), but the point is this: Japanese people usually keep their strengths on the down-low.

So try not to show off too much. Revealing one or two of your strengths is fine, but listing all your amazing abilities will annoy others and make you seem over-confident.

In the West, if you're meeting someone one-on-one, you shake hands.

In Japan, don't move in for the handshake, especially if your status is the same or lower than the person you're meeting. In Japan, handshakes are for equals, so if you try to shake hands with the Emperor, it would be considered rude. Bow instead, and do so at the beginning and end of your jikoshoukai.

In Japan, holding your hands behind your back signals importance, so it may make you look full of yourself. Put your hands in front of you (the left hand on top of the right), or put your hands beside you.

This is a no-no from our Japanese bowing guide . Do your bowing after giving your self-introduction. Make sure to finish saying "yoroshiku onegaishimasu" and then bow.

Business cards in Japan are called meishi 名刺 ( めいし ) , and are an important part of Japanese culture. Even outside of the business world, Japanese people sometimes have personal meishi made (meishi means "name card" after all).

We covered meishi etiquette in our article about Japanese work customs , but here are the rules again in a jikoshoukai context.

Orient your card toward the recipient. Give and receive meishi with two hands.

Put meishi in a carrying case: You can buy business card carrying cases online or at any department store in Japan. If you don't have a case, you can carefully put the meishi in your purse or wallet after you've received it. Just don't put it in your pocket.

Use two hands: Orient your card toward the recipient when presenting. Hold the top edge with both hands. When they offer their card, accept it with two hands. Try not to cover any words with your fingers either. Some Japanese people are taught that a meishi is the "face" of the person giving it, so you don't want to cover theirs or your own.

When you and your new friend offer each other meishi at the same time: Present your card with your right hand, while simultaneously receiving theirs with your left.

Read meishi you receive: Read the person's name and title on the card before you put it away. Make sure to show interest in what they do. Act at least a little bit impressed with their job title.

When exchanging meishi in a group, give to the most senior person first: Start by giving your business card to the shachou, then fukushachou, and so on down the chain of command .

Treat meishi with respect: Use common sense and treat meishi like you would a gift. Don't toss or write on them.

Expanding the Basic Jikoshoukai

Maybe you've been doing your Japanese self-intro for years, repeating the same three set phrases over and over. Maybe you've read this guide before and have the basics down pat. You're ready to level up!

Below are example sentences you can mix into your standard jikoshoukai to give it more flavor, and make your self-intro a memorable one.

Earlier we learned how to use はじめまして (nice to meet you, how do you do). Here's a few ways to add to this set phrase.

  • こんにちは。はじめまして。
  • Hello. Nice to meet you.
  • みなさん、はじめまして。
  • Nice to meet you, everyone.
  • みなさん、こんにちは。はじめまして。
  • Hello everyone. Nice to meet you.

For a formal situation, you should say both your first and last names. In a casual situation, it's common to say only your family name for Japanese people.

If you're an English teacher on something like the JET Program , your school might want you to give your first name when you introduce yourself to the students. Ask your supervisor what's appropriate for the situation.

Below are several ways to introduce your name, organized by politeness in ascending order.

  • 私 ( わたし ) の 名前 ( なまえ ) はマイケルですが、みんなにはマイクって 呼ばれて ( よ    ) います。
  • My name is Michael, but most people call me Mike.
  • I'm Michael.

Very Formal:

  • マイケルと 申します ( もう    ) 。

Very Formal/Business:

  • Tofuguのマイケルと 申します ( もう    ) 。
  • I'm Michael from Tofugu.

When you end your jikoshoukai, you'll use a phrase that means "Please be kind to me" or "Remember me favorably." But once you've got a handle on the standard " yoroshiku onegaishimasu ," you can move on to more casual or more formal variations. Below we've organized them by politeness level in ascending order.

Polite/Business:

  • どうぞ、よろしくお 願い ( ねが  ) します。
  • よろしくお 願い ( ねが  ) 致します ( いた    ) 。

Very Polite/Business:

  • どうぞ、よろしくお 願い ( ねが  ) 致します ( いた    ) 。

Formal/Business:

  • よろしくお 願い ( ねが  ) 申し上げます ( もう あ    ) 。
  • どうぞ、よろしくお 願い ( ねが  ) 申し上げます ( もう あ    ) 。

Custom Jikoshoukai Modification

From here we get into the fun stuff. After expanding on the initial three pieces of the Japanese self-introduction, you can start adding information about yourself, short sentences that explain where you're from, what you like to do, and so on.

These jikoshoukai modifications will help people get to know you faster when you first introduce yourself. This is especially important as you start to make more Japanese friends, go on dates, or have job interviews.

Telling where you're from is always a good addition to a self-intro. Even if you don't use it during the initial jikoshoukai, your new Japanese friend will probably ask you anyway, so memorizing a few of these phrases is extra useful.

Two quick vocabulary usage notes: First, the word shusshin 出身 ( しゅっしん ) mean's "person's origin," and refers more to the place you were born or grew up than where you currently live. It's often used for specific places like a city, state, or prefecture, rather than a country. For example, Mami was born in Osaka, and now lives in Canada. But she spent most of her life in Nara, so she says " 奈良県 ( ならけん ) の 出身 ( しゅっしん ) です。" or " 出身 ( しゅっしん ) は 奈良県 ( ならけん ) です。"

Second, the verb mairu 参る ( まいる ) is a more humble form of kuru 来る ( く  ) or iku 行く ( い  ) . So when 参る ( まい  ) is used to talk about where you came from in "アメリカから 参りました ( まい    ) ," it's much more humble, so use it in appropriate situations.

  • アメリカの 出身 ( しゅっしん ) です。
  • I'm from America.
  • アメリカから 来ました ( き    ) 。
  • アメリカから 参りました ( まい     ) 。
  • オレゴン 州 ( しゅう ) のポートランドから 来ました ( き    ) 。 生まれ ( う   ) も 育ち ( そだ  ) もポートランドです。
  • I'm from Portland, Oregon. Born and raised.
  • 生まれ ( う   ) は 大阪 ( おおさか ) ですが、 育ち ( そだ  ) は 東京 ( とうきょう ) です。

10 Easy Ways to Make your Guided Tours More Interactive

10 EASY WAYS TO MAKE YOUR GUIDED TOURS MORE INTERACTIVE

Introduction, the traditional lecture-style guided tour is dead, long live the interactive tour, well, it’s not actually, it’s still alive and kicking in some quarters but in my opinion it shouldn’t be. , traditional lecture-style ‘walk and talk ‘ guided tours with an expert guide are still fairly common and in some places are still a standard way of ‘presenting’ an historic site, a city or a museum to the public., things have definitely changed in the last 10 years since i started this journey of teaching others how to transition to a more discussion-based approach, but there is still work to be done., if you feel you talk too much on your tours or you overshare information, this podcast episode is for you. if you would like to have more interaction with your participants then today i’m sharing 10 easy ways you can implement now to make your tours more interactive – that means more of a two-way conversation rather than a one-way lecture., so, here are 10 easy ways to make your guided tours more interactive., #1 ask questions, when you ask guides how they can create more interaction on their guided tours, the first thing they always say is that you need to ask more questions., but asking more questions doesn’t guarantee interaction, especially if those questions are the wrong questions. we’ve talked often on this blog about questions – you could say that it was a pet-subject of mine, but there is a reason for this., getting good at asking the right questions is key to making your programmes more interactive. and this takes work and practice..

You need to know the difference between open and closed questions and when to use them. You need to know how to use follow-up questions, clarifying or reframing questions. You need to study questions. And do this regularly.

Be a student of questions and get really good at it because asking great questions is key to interactivity. You could even keep a question journal with your favourite questions and new ones that you’ve heard.

You will need to ask open-ended questions or use thinking routines to improve interaction, jump-start discussions and make everyone feel part of the discovery process in your guided tours., go back to these posts to study questions in more detail – the 5 golden rules for asking brilliant questions , 10 common mistakes to avoid when asking questions and how to use artworks to improve your questioning skills . and make a commitment to yourself to work on your questions., #2 use your introduction to set expectations for interaction, use your introduction at the start of your tour to set expectations for interaction., you should:, introduce yourself, the organisation you’re working for (if appropriate), introduce the programme (what you’re going to do), and ask questions of the visitors to get to know them, all of these 4 elements can be utilised as a way of getting more interaction into your programme., in your introduction to yourself – don’t forget to mention your role. for interaction and participation, you don’t want to position yourself as the expert (even if you are an expert in your field), you need to think of yourself as the orchestrator or facilitator or the guide-on-the-side ., once you’re introduced yourself, you can then introduce the organisation if you’re working as part of a team in a museum or cultural organisation and the programme. you can share the theme of the tour, what they might be seeing/exploring and how long it’s going to take., you should also add some statements about the type of programme it is going to be:, state that it’s going to be an interactive experience and that you are discovering things together., say that all comments and questions are welcome and that there are no right or wrong answers., tell them what to expect during their time with you. set them up for active participation not a passive experience of listening, by stating this up front, you are setting the tone for interaction ., finally you need to ask your participants questions – these can be closed questions because you are keen on finding out information about them. remember, not too many of these types of questions in a row or your participants will feel like they are being grilled. find out their prior knowledge and attitudes. these valuable insights into their backgrounds will help you personalise and structure your tour and in turn, create more interaction., #3 observe your group, pay close attention to the participants in your group. you need to be regularly assessing how people are responding to you., there is a skill to being able to pick up on discrete and subtle clues in your participants’ behaviour. look for verbal & non-verbal clues and pay attention to body language, do a quick scan of your group and look out for who is smiling (and who is not), how people are standing and how much space there is between people. now look for other clues, facial expressions, posture and body language too., once you’ve observed you can try to make sense of what you’ve been ‘reading’., don’t jump to conclusions – for example arms folded or crossed could mean someone is fed up or bored or simply don’t know what to do with their arms whilst they are standing in front of a painting. continue to gather further information throughout and pay close attention to your group. become an observer of behaviour., #4 create a warm and welcoming environment, on a guided tour, you want to make sure that all participants feel happy to interact with you – you want to create a welcoming and friendly atmosphere that encourages participation and involvement from the start. you want to make sure that all participants feel that their contributions are valued and understood by the facilitator – ie you., use your facilitation skills and good questioning techniques throughout to make sure everyone feels comfortable about participating and sharing., don’t forget to welcome everyone to the session and make sure you find out something about the participants., not just who they are and where they come from, but what they already know about the subject at hand. it’s good to know where everyone is coming from so that you can tailor content accordingly., likewise, check in with participants throughout, observe them and ‘check the temperature’ of the group from time to time., continue to pay attention to what’s not being said but you can observe from them. use humour or gentle questions to encourage participation from even the most reticent of participants., but don’t force, interaction and participation is encouraged but never required., #5 make them curious, provoke curiosity within your group to get them itching to find out more., you can use thinking routines to explore artworks and objects and to stimulate curiosity, bring up memories and connections and encourage participants to share personal stories., making your thoughts about an object visible, bringing your ‘wonderings’ out into the open and having conversations about objects can be an uplifting and sometimes even a transformative experience., ask the question ‘what are you wondering about’ throughout your tour to find out what your participants are really curious about and to share information accordingly., and model curiosity yourself – the more curious and enthusiastic you are, the more infectious it will be, #6 use visual aids, you can use a variety of props and visual aids to make your guided tours more interactive. pencils and notepads are useful for your participants. you may want visitors to sketch an entire object or to write down things they are observing., post-it notes are also great for getting people to note down short phrases or words., tactile objects are great to pass around (in a safe way according to covid guidelines) to explore texture., these kinds of hands-on materials can be really helpful in explaining objects from the past and from different cultures., for the visually impaired, handling objects is a way of making collections more accessible., for any visitor incorporating senses other than seeing offers visitors a richer understanding of the objects in the collection., you could bring in tactile objects for example, marble samples or metal, or sensory objects – bring in spices to smell or you could share tools that were used by artists or workers., you can use photographs, artist’s letters, video clips, listen to music (you can pass around or show on ipad)., for family groups i used to have a whole box of props and visual aids and this included magnifying glasses, torches, viewfinders and stopwatches., #7 vary your activities, include a variety of multi-modal ways of working. don’t rely solely on discussion and talking., you could include movement when looking at objects or artworks – looking at something from far away and close up, doing a 360 look around a sculpture, changing places with someone on the other side, looking from below and above., you could also get one or all of your group to assume the pose of a figure in a painting or sculpture., they could step inside a character and act – how would that person move, what might they say how would they say it, you could also wear a hat, or some type of clothing or carry a prop to become a character., aside from movement and acting, you could incorporate short writing and listening exercises into your tours – do this in small amounts to start with to experiment and explore the possibilities., keen an eye on the time though – these activities will take up more time and you may need to plan your route accordingly., #8 change the way your group works, don’t always interact as a large group. use different devices to encourage more voices to interact with you and with each other., use a pair-share to ask participants to turn to their neighbours and discuss something., use small groups to work on different questions or activities. you could also assign different roles within the groups – such as notetaker and spokesperson so that you can include everyone to do something., it changes the group dynamic and changes up the energy in the room – if the group are low on energy, break them up into smaller groups and you will see the interaction fly again, how can pausing help with interactivity it sounds a little bit counterintuitive. but, bear with me., allow yourself to pause every so often. don’t feel like you have to fill every space with words., pause after you ask a question and allow wait time. pause after you say something of impact and importance that you want them to remember., there is more potential for interaction if you pause., it helps give your participants time to process what you’ve been saying and time for them to get their thoughts together., longer pauses allow time for people to listen to each other too., a longer wait time will signal that you are prepared to value the answers that your participants are about to give., so, do allow for pauses throughout to increase interactivity, #10 allow agency and autonomy, give the group some choice over what they do and see. these don’t have to be big choices (remember you are in control of group management and for ensuring the group has a safe and enjoyable time with you), but a small amount of agency and autonomy, makes participants feel as though they are part of the process and not just tagging along with your planned route., it also gives them shared ownership of the tour and a feeling of more control., and these are all good things that will encourage more interaction. here are some suggestions:, ask your group to find another painting in the room that connects with one you’ve already been discussing, ask participants to choose between several choices for the next stop, give them 5 mins to explore an artwork or object in the room that they are curious about and then to report back., or get them to ask you questions. give your audience a chance to ask you 10 rapid quick-fire questions., these are all great strategies for increasing a feeling of agency and autonomy within the group and for making them feel like they have more control and as a result they will interact with you more, so, there you have it – 10 easy ways to make your guided tours more interactive. simple things that you can apply today to get more 2-way engagement going on in your tours.,
