Tour of Cambridgeshire to fold after final 2023 edition

Golazo Cycling have announced that this year's edition of the Tour of Cambridgeshire will be the final one.

The closed-road event, which is the only British qualifier for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, has been running since 2015. The 2023 edition, set for 2-4 June, will be the seventh after two years were lost to the pandemic.

"Our aim, when we established the Tour of Cambridgeshire was to bring the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships to Britain and this year we have the honour of hosting that event as part of 2023 Cycling World Championships in Glasgow & Scotland," said Malcolm Smith of Golazo Cycling.

"With our primary goal accomplished we feel now is the right time to close the door on the Tour of Cambridgeshire. In the years since we began the event thousands of riders have enjoyed taking to the closed roads of the county, with many of them qualifying for and subsequently competing at the Gran Fondo Worlds where the Tour of Cambridgeshire has consistently provided the largest travelling participation. It has given us a huge sense of satisfaction to know that we had a hand in opening up this opportunity for amateur and age group racing cyclists from Britain."

2023 will be the final edition of the Tour of Cambridgeshire Granfondo.

The Tour of Cambridgeshire is also known for its closed road time trial which offered a spectacular indoor time trial start ramp with high production values and is something which Smith reflects on with some pride.

"We decided to showcase what time trialling could be like in the UK where we are known for our passion for solo speed. Despite initial reservations riders loved the whole experience, and as keen racing cyclists ourselves, what remains a very expensive element of the event to run has always been a project of passion for us."

This final edition of the Tour of Cambridgeshire will include the same rides as 2022. There'll be three Sportives, the Road Race and Gran Fondo, and of course the Time Trial. Riders finishing in the top 25% of their age group in the last three of these events will qualify for the World Championships.

As well as the rides the Tour of Cambridgeshire will have an Expo, Food Fair and all the other entertainment and activities visitors have grown used to.

"It must be said that since we began running the event in 2015 much has changed and each edition has thrown up considerable challenges for us to overcome. Co-founder Tom Caldwell has always been a source of grounded rationalism to temper my passion and vision," continued Smith.

"It has also been a joy for us to be on the finish line at the Tour of Cambridgeshire presenting medals and seeing the exhausted but delighted faces of those riders finishing their rides. We came to know the backstories of many of these people, many of whom had overcome their own challenges to participate and often found ourselves choked at what it meant to them to finish our event and in many cases raise significant funds for their chosen charities.

"Since we are at the end of this journey and having been part of bringing the Worlds to Britain, we would like to send heartfelt thanks to everyone who has come and ridden the Tour of Cambridgeshire and embraced what we have delivered. We look forward to welcoming everyone to Peterborough for one last time in June and then seeing those who qualify at the 'big one' in Scotland this August."

Entries for the final Tour of Cambridgeshire remain available at www.tourofcambridgeshire.com .

Tour of Cambrigeshire is the first fully closed road UCI Gran Fondo and UCI Time Trial Event. It is unlike any other mass participation event in the UK. Uniquely the event caters for everyone whether you are an elite racer, an athletic sports rider, a challenge rider, or just out to test yourself in a more leisurely way on your bike, on closed roads, around the stunning Cambridgeshire countryside.

Peterborough is a  Cathedral City   with a population estimated to be 203,600 of which 137,910 were residents in the urban area of the city. It is the largest city in Cambridgeshire and the 27th largest in the United Kingdom, situated 75 miles (121 km) north of  London , the city stands on the  River Nene  which flows into the  North Sea  approximately 30 miles (48 km) to the north-east.

The local  topography  is flat and low-lying, and in some places lies below sea level, for example in  the Fens  that lie to the east of Peterborough.

Housing and population are expanding and a £1 billion regeneration of the city centre and immediate surrounding area is underway. In common with much of the United Kingdom, industrial  employment  has fallen, with a significant proportion of new jobs being in  financial services  and distribution.

Historically Peterborough played an important role in the establishment of parliamentary democracy and has a number of local ties to King Henry VIII with one of his former wives being buried in the Cathedral. Mary Queen of Scots was executed in Fortheringhay, one of many beautiful local villages, in 1587. More recently, railway lines began operating locally during the 1840s, but it was the 1850 opening of the  Great Northern Railway’s  main line from London to  York  that transformed Peterborough from a market town to an industrial centre with particular focus on engineering and construction.  Today Peterborough is recognised as the Environmental Capital of the UK.

More information later.

Start and finish of the time trial will be orchestrated in the Peterborough Showground and Arena (PAS) with to major expo and logistics to give the best available quality for all participants. PAS can be found 10km west of the city center.

The course will go out in the country side for a big loop of 16 miles to come back on the same road towards PAS to finish.

Peterborough is a major stop on the East Coast Main Line, 45–50 minutes journey time from  central London , with high-speed intercity services from  King’s Cross  to  Edinburgh Waverley  operated by the  East Coast Main Line Company  at around a 20-minute frequency, and slower commuter services terminating at Peterborough operated by  Great Northern . It is a major railway junction where a number of cross-country routes converge.

The  A1/A1(M) primary route  (part of  European route E15 ) broadly follows the path of the historic  Great North Road  from  St Paul’s Cathedral  in the heart of London, through Peterborough (Junction 17), continuing north a further 335 miles (539 km) to central  Edinburgh .

Peterborough is also accessed from the East by sea ports specifically Felixstowe and Harwich and within one hour we have airports at Stansted, Nottingham, Doncaster, Luton and Heathrow in London.

Tour of Cambs

This year's Tour of Cambridgeshire, one of the biggest challenge ride events in the UK, will be the final one, its organisers have announced.

Organised by Golazo Cycling, the event is still relatively young having only been inaugurated in 2015. But its status as part of the UCI Gran Fondo World Series and the closed roads parcours it boasts have quickly established it as a firm favourite.

After missing two editions due to covid, this year's final event will be the seventh.

Golazo Cycling will this year also be hosting the Gran Fondo World Championship in Scotland, which it cites as its primary objective when it began the Tour of Cambridgeshire. With that achieved, the time is right to bring the 'ToC' to an end, it says.

“...This year we have the honour of hosting that event as part of the 2023 Cycling World Championships in Glasgow & Scotland,” said Malcolm Smith of Golazo on the ToC website.

“With our primary goal accomplished we feel now is the right time to close the door on the Tour of Cambridgeshire."

More than 7,000 riders from 54 countries took part in last year's ToC, which is essentially a cycling festival comprising a number of events. These include closed-road sportives of varying distances, a 66-mile closed-road road race, and a time trial with a sumptuous indoor start, complete with start ramp.

Golazo Cycling's announcement of the event's closure on the ToC Facebook page was met with many messages of gratitude for an enjoyable event and regret that it could not continue longer.

"Genuinely saddened about this. Loved this event and met loads of great people over the years," said Gareth Cooper, while Steve Copeland commented: "Oh no, this one or my favourite events. I come back from Spain every year to ride it."

Not all the comments were so complimentary though, with Neil Morrans saying, "I think it’s fair to say that everyone who lives on, adjacent to the route will be delighted… Sadly, there are endless examples of local access concerns being ignored and dismissed."

Others pointed to the development of the event's home at the East of England Showground as another challenge to overcome.

Thousands of patients face long waits for autism diagnosis in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough

Thousands of patients are waiting months for an autism diagnosis in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, figures show.

A think tank has said a “radical rethink” of autism and ADHD assessments and treatments is needed if the NHS is to keep up with demand.

The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence has set a target time of 13 weeks for those with suspected autism to be assessed.

But figures from NHS England show around 2,595 people in the area covered by the NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Integrated Care Board had been waiting at least this long for an autism diagnosis at the end of 2023.

Of these, 37% were under 18.

This was up from the same point a year before, when 1,840 people were waiting for 13 weeks or longer, 38% of them children.

Location data is not available for a small percentage of patients across England, meaning there may have been more patients last year than this figure suggests.

Across England, referrals for autism have been on the rise for both adults and children.

Analysis from the Nuffield Trust – a think tank – shows the 172,000 open referrals in December is the highest figure ever, and a five-fold increase since 2019.

Thea Stein, chief executive of the Nuffield Trust, called the rise in demand "unprecedented", saying the NHS is struggling to meet it.

She urged: "We are only now beginning to recognise just how many people are neurodiverse. The challenge is that we have an obsolete health service model in place to deal with this avalanche of need."

"We need to urgently understand the different elements of this complex picture and find a whole system approach across education, society at large and the health service," she added.

Across the country 136,000 people were referred to NHS autism services in 2023, with 1,775 of them in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

In 2022 there were 112,000 new referrals.

The Nuffield Trust also point to a growing number of people receiving treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder – ADHD – with a 51% increase in the number of people receiving medication for the condition in 2022-23 compared to 2019-20.

However, it cautions there is currently no national data on ADHD assessments, so the exact scale of the issue is difficult to gauge.

An NHS spokesperson said: "The NHS is fully committed to supporting and improving the lives of those with ADHD and autism which is why we have published new national guidance to help local areas manage the 50% increase in referrals they have seen.

"NHS England has also begun important work into investigating challenges in ADHD service provision and last month launched a cross sector taskforce alongside the Government, to help provide a joined-up approach for the growing numbers of people coming forward for support."

Saffron Cordery, deputy chief executive at NHS Providers, said improving the quality of care and access to services for autistic people "must be a priority".

"That includes making sure that patients, carers and families are involved fully in decisions about their care. We need to make sure too that the full range of services on which autistic people rely are funded properly and prioritised nationwide," she added.

She said trusts need greater government investment to deal with the increased pressure they are under.
