STUDIO TOURS

Interestingly enough, there are quite a few differences between the tours offered at each studio, and that should make it easier to figure out which tour best fits your expectations.

Ticket prices vary from $62 per person to literally thousands of dollars.

However, 3 of the tours, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, and Universal Studios are included for free or at a lower cost in several tourist attraction passes.

It's also worth noting that the length of these tours can run from roughly an hour to almost a week.

With all of that said, let's start talking about what each movie studio offers with their tours.

  • Warner Bros.
  • Sony Pictures
  • Universal Studios
  • Paramount Pictures
  • Adventures by Disney: Disney Backstage

At the bottom of this post , we share some thoughts and opinions from members of our Los Angeles Travel Tips group on Facebook.

Our group comprises roughly 9,000 locals (like our tour guides), tourists, returning visitors, and newbies to LA.

You don't need to be a member to read the posts, comments, and recommendations.

WARNER BROS. STUDIO TOUR

Below is a summary of our post on Warner Brothers Studio tours , where we also provide tips on planning your trip.

If you're in the market for a somewhat normal tour on the backlot, this might be one of your best bets.

In addition to seeing movie sets and sound stages from some of the most notable movies in film history, you'll also have the opportunity to enjoy a few specific activities.

tour of film studio

While on this movie studio tour, you'll be able to re-create a famous scene from the hit television show Friends , climb aboard Harry Potter 's broomstick, and even create your own Batmobile.

Warner Bros. even offers an interactive sound stage that explores the entire process of making a film from start to finish.

At three hours in length, this tour is probably the longest duration of all of the options in Hollywood.

  • $70/adult | $60/child
  • Availability: Thursday - Monday
  • Hours: Every half hour from 9 am - 3:30 pm
  • Duration: 3 hours

tour of film studio

With an overall score of 4.5 out of 5 stars , it's fair to say that this Hollywood studio tour is very well rated ( read reviews here ).

Some guests have gone so far as to suggest that this trip is worth every single penny.

Visitors were typically very happy with their tour guides, referring to them as both friendly and informative.

SONY PICTURES STUDIO TOUR

This might be the most affordable movie studio tour in Hollywood, and it's also one of the most historic. Do note, that is is a walking tour.

While on this tour, you'll see the sound stages where they recorded classics such as The Wizard of Oz and superhero flicks like Spider-man .

Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to see where Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune are recorded.

Although they don't make any promises, there's always a chance that you'll run into someone famous on this active studio back lot!

They also offer a premium tour which includes transportation via golf cart, access to the Sony Museum, a free souvenir photo, a complimentary beverage, and lower prices at the Sony Studio Store.

Tickets

  • $55 per person | $150 for the Premium tour
  • Availability: Monday – Friday at 10:30 am, 1:30 pm and 2:30 pm
  • Duration: 2 hours

Tip: Admission is usually included for free with the purchase of at least one Los Angeles tourist pass .

With an overall score of 4 out of 5 stars on TripAdvisor, it's clear that this is a pretty popular Hollywood studio tour.

Customers really appreciated the opportunity to see several historic filming locations and learn a lot about the process of making a movie.

Although some reviewers were unhappy that this is a walking tour, others simply appreciated the opportunity to see where film history was made.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS TOUR

This is where things get interesting, as Universal Studios has essentially made their tour one of the services offered at their amusement park.

In other words, you need to buy a ticket for Universal Studios Hollywood in order to experience this studio tour.

Clocking in at only one hour in length, this is definitely the shortest studio tour available. Check out this video of Stephen Spielberg giving a tour of the site.

In addition to seeing the back lot, you'll also experience attractions such as the Jaws ride, King Kong 360 in 3D, Bates Motel and Fast & The Furious : Supercharged.

Although it will cost more to take this tour, it's worth noting that your ticket lasts all day and guarantees access to all of the rides.

  • $119-$139/adult | $109-$129/child
  • Availability: Daily from 8 am - 6 pm
  • Duration: 1 hour
  • Click here for ticket information .

TIP:   Universal Studios Hollywood is included for free with the purchase of a tourist pass. Read about all the opportunities for deals in our full post .

Despite the higher price tag, this movie studio tour has still received quite excellent ratings ( read reviews here ). The overall Universal Studios Hollywood experience has a score of 4.7 out of 5 stars .

A few visitors have even suggested that this trip around the studio is worth the price of admission.

Although most customers feel that the ticket price is a bit high, even the critics can't deny that they had a blast.

PARAMOUNT PICTURES STUDIO TOUR

Unlike the other movie studios, Paramount Pictures offers three different studio tours.

The main tour is 2 hours long and covers quite a lot of ground on the backlot.

However, if you want to experience more, their VIP tour lasts for 4 ½ hours and includes access to several additional areas.

The VIP tour also provides a gourmet lunch at a unique location in the studio.

Alternatively, you can also choose a 2 ½ hour night tour that reveals a lot of historic locations such as notable theaters and original film vaults.

No matter which option you choose, you'll learn a lot about the history of Paramount.

  • $65 for the studio tour | $215 for the VIP tour
  • Availability of Studio tour: Mon-Fri, every half hour from 9 AM - 3:30 PM
  • Availability of VIP tour: Mon, Wed, Fri at 9:30 AM
  • Duration of Studio tour: 2 hours
  • Duration of VIP tour: 4 ½ hours
  • Click here for additional information .

Reviews for the Paramount Pictures Studio tours are very positive, averaging a rating of 4 ½ out of 5 stars on TripAdvisor.

Some visitors referred to the excursion as a movie buff's dream, while others were just impressed with how much they learned and discovered.

Some reviewers indicated that Paramount alters the tour slightly depending on the season, ensuring a nice variety of topics and locations to cover no matter when you decide to buy a ticket.

ADVENTURES BY DISNEY: DISNEY BACKSTAGE

You had to figure that Disney was going to be a little more expensive, but the actual cost of this week-long experience might shock you.

To be fair, the package includes meals and accommodation at both the Loews Hollywood Hotel and Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa.

This Disney backstage adventure includes a tour of the Walt Disney Studios & Archives, an Imagineering tour, a Hollywood walking tour, and a tour of the Jim Henson Company.

Most of these tours are only available via this week-long package. The entire itinerary takes six days to complete, and it will keep you busy with plenty of fun activities from start to finish.

  • $4,999 for Adults | $4,749 for Children
  • Availability: 2-4 times per month
  • Duration: 6 days
  • Hotel accommodation included
  • 11 Meals included
  • VIP Disneyland ticket included

As you can probably imagine, the testimonials for this experience are quite positive ( read reviews here ).

Some guests even noted that they made friends with their tour guides and continue to stay in touch with them to this very day.

Additionally, customers also appreciated the opportunity to see some behind-the-scenes areas that bring the history of Walt Disney to life.

One visitor even suggested that this trip allowed them to become kids again as they explored secret and wonderful locations at the happiest place on earth.

COMBO DEALS

If you're looking for a better price on these tours and other activities in Hollywood, you might want to consider one of the following combo packages.

Studios like Warner Bros. and Universal often work with tour companies to provide their services at lower prices.

There are several options to mull over, and almost all of them provide additional tours and services.

If you plan on spending more than one day in Hollywood, these combo deals are definitely worth a look.

GO CITY LOS ANGELES ALL-INCLUSIVE PASS

There's a reason that this is one of the premier attraction passes in Los Angeles.

In addition to offering access to a variety of notable locations, they also provide admission to some studio tours.

In particular, you can enjoy the Universal Studios tour, the Warner Bros. Studio tour and (sometimes) the Sony Pictures Studio tour with one version of this pass or another.

The Warner Bros. Studio tour is currently only offered with their Explorer Pass, and you'll need to purchase at least a 3-Day All-Inclusive pass to get admission to the Universal Studios tour .

Given that this tourist pass also supplies tickets to Six Flags Magic Mountain and Knott's Berry Farm, it's fair to say that the Go City Los Angeles All-Inclusive Pass could be a real bargain.

  • $109 for 1-day pass
  • $164 for 2-day pass
  • $284 for 3-day pass
  • $344 for 4-day pass
  • $374 for 5-day pass
  • $434 for 7-day pass
  • $99 for 2 choices
  • $119 for 3 choices
  • $144 for 4 choices
  • $154 for 5 choices
  • $189 for 7 choices
  • This attraction pass is available every day of the week
  • Includes up to 3 movie studio tours

Read our post comparing the different tourist attraction passes available in Los Angeles.

TRANSPORTATION COMBO PACKAGES

If you're looking for transportation to and from each movie studio tour, the following services are available.

The advantage of these combo deals is that you won't have to pay for parking, gas, or car rental in order to visit each location.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included with each package.

Take your time and enjoy the studio tour without having to worry about anything else!

  • Not currently available as of January 2024

Universal Studio Tours Sign

CELEBRITY HOMES TOUR COMBO PACKAGES

These combo deals provide both a celebrity home tour and a movie studio tour.

Each option includes transportation not only around Hollywood but also to and from the studios.

While some of these services use a mini-bus, others drive you around town in a luxury sedan or an SUV.

Each company offers both hotel pickup and drop-off.

Expect these outings to last for between 6-8 hours on average.

  • Warner Bros. Studio Tour & Movie Star Homes Tour (Starline Tours) - $119/Adults | $99/Children
  • Alternatively, we offer our own self-guided celebrity homes tour .

This might be a good way to save even more money if you don't mind doing a bit of driving around Hollywood and Beverly Hills.

TIPS FROM LOCALS AND TRAVELERS

While we provide the details of what each tour offers, costs, and other information, here you can see what members of our Los Angeles Travel Tips group on Facebook have to say.

Guide to Los Angeles' Studio Tours

 Universal Studios

Going on a studio tour in Los Angeles is a great way to get a behind-the-scenes look at some of your favorite TV and movie sets. As a tourgoer, you'll get to see some of the most iconic backdrops in town, from Monica's apartment on "Friends" to the RV from "Breaking Bad"—but access is limited and be aware that your favorite movie scenes might actually be just a bunch of warehouses full of lights, cables, and set pieces.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour

Warner Bros.' studio tour in Burbank entails both walking and riding in a cart around to working sets (although rarely are there any actors around). It's the most expensive of the studio tours, but that's because it's a bigger studio and it's also home to some of the most familiar stages like "Friends," "Big Bang Theory," the Harry Potter series, and more. There's even a working Central Perk Café on-site. The regular tour takes three hours and there's also a deluxe version that takes six hours.

Paramount Studio Tour

TripSavvy / Kayte Deioma

Two-hour cart tours of the studio behind the famous Paramount Arches are offered several times a day. Here, you'll see the Bronson Gate, the New York Street Backlot (which is designed to look like NYC), and the Prop Warehouse. You might recognize things from "Forrest Gump" and "I Love Lucy." The VIP Paramount Studio Tour includes a gourmet lunch and talks with archivists and last four hours, 30 minutes long.

Sony Pictures Studios Tour

Michael Kovac / Getty Images

The two-hour guided walking tour of Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City includes photo opportunities on the "Jeopardy" set and in front of the mobile meth lab from "Breaking Bad." Tours are offered four times a day Monday through Friday, but they can get very busy—probably because this is one of the cheapest studio tours in town—so it's recommended to make a reservation beforehand.

Universal Studios Tour

Universal Studios Tours are unique in that they're actually part of the Universal Studios Hollywood theme park . You'll have to pay theme park prices to take the tram tour, which includes special effects sets so you get to experience earthquakes, floods, car crashes, "King Kong" in 3D, and a "Fast and the Furious" simulation along the way. You'll also get to see outdoor backlot sets that have been used in TV shows and famous movies like "Psycho" and "War of the Worlds." The route is ever-changing depending on which sets are in use.

Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio & Museum

Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio in Newhall, north of Los Angeles, is a working set for everything from westerns to war movies. Its museum houses nine decades of movie memorabilia, including the famous "Dukes of Hazard" car. Tours of the 22-acre lot are only available for groups, but if you come in April, you might be able to attend the annual Cowboy Festival  (that is if it doesn't get relocated due to filming).

Paramount Ranch

Patrick Slaven / Flickr CC By-NC 2.0

In addition to the Paramount Studio Tour, you can also visit Paramount Ranch , located in the Santa Monica Mountains. This old western movie set was built back in 1927 and operated for 25 years. After that, it changed hands numerous times, until the National Park Service finally took it over. It is still available for use as a film set or for weddings, but it's open to the public, so you can sometimes watch filming from afar. The ranch is a hub for surrounding hiking and equestrian trails. Best of all, it's free to visit.

Classic film lovers: See James Dean’s apartment and more on new TCM tour at Warner Bros.

In 2021, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour created new interactive exhibits focused on the company’s recent history, unveiling areas dedicated to the DC Comics universe and the “Harry Potter” franchise.

This week, the popular Studio Tour in Burbank is doubling down on its more distant past.

Warner Bros. is now offering a Turner Classic Movies-branded version of its studio tour that will bring guests to previously off-limit areas of the lot, including vintage animation buildings, a mini rose garden and an apartment that once housed James Dean. The 90-minute tram portion of the jaunt — about 30 minutes longer than the studio’s standard tram excursion — will allow guides to go deeper into the history of the studio’s catalog to deliver factoids related to such films as “Casablanca,” “My Fair Lady,” “Rebel Without a Cause,” “Auntie Mame” and many more.

“We’re off the leash,” says Brad Taylor, a 15-year tour guide veteran with Warner Bros., noting that the TCM excursion will include time for guides to chat with visitors about their favorite films.

The TCM hosts are seen on on the Warner Bros. backlot.

“We get to talk to the guests and really hang out with people who have the same passion that we do,” Taylor says. “I find that ‘classics’ guests are less about behind-the-scenes and more, ‘I can’t believe this is where we are.’ It’s just the look on their faces when they realize ‘Casablanca’ filmed here, or James Dean stood right here.”

The launch of the TCM tour arrives during the network’s 30th anniversary and close to 12 months after classic film fans were given a scare. In June, Warner Bros. announced that layoffs would hit TCM, including some of the network’s top executives, prompting concern from prestige directors such as Steven Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson and Martin Scorsese. After garnering national attention, key cuts were reversed and Warner Bros. sought to assure fans that TCM would continue to be handled with care.

Fears about TCM’s decline

Long live TCM! Our culture would be worse off without movies on TV

Without Turner Classic Movies and other channels for movies on TV, we’d lose the instructive pleasures of the happy accident, the unexpected discovery.

Aug. 1, 2023

TCM network hosts — Eddie Muller, Jacqueline Stewart, Ben Mankiewicz, Alicia Malone and Dave Karger — recorded new video segments for the outing. The tour will take guests into the lot’s Property House, an area not visited by the standard tour. Here, visitors can get glimpses of materials for a full set, including items for a complete Oval Office setting, but expect guides to highlight vintage items, such as a throne from the Errol Flynn pirate film “Captain Blood.”

Danny Kahn, vice president-general manager of the studio tour, says there have been numerous requests over the years from guests to delve a little deeper into the studio’s animation history. That’s why the TCM tour will for the first time take visitors to an area of the lot once known as “Termite Terrace,” which from 1955 to 1964, says Taylor, housed the animation department, a building with a sloped roof designed to capture sunlight. Animation legend Chuck Jones, says Kahn, had an office in the Termite Terrace area in the 1990s despite Warner’s moving animation production elsewhere.

How the Universal Studios tram tour defined the modern theme park

The most important theme park ride ever created? It may just be the Universal Studios tram tour, which dates to the silent film era. Once primarily a behind-the-scenes tour, the trek has evolved to define the modern theme park.

Aug. 3, 2023

Another unique tour locale is the exterior of the Dean apartment. When Dean resided there during filming of “East of Eden,” it was actually across the street from the lot, the apartment nesting above a pharmacy. But gradual studio expansion has led to the area now being on Warner Bros. property.

“That was an actual drugstore with apartments, and the studio rented it for him,” Kahn says. “I think it was to keep an eye on him and keep him on a short leash.”

The tour will also give tram riders a look at executive life at the studio, allowing them to briefly walk around a rose garden. The manicured spaces once held a tennis court as well as offices and personal screening rooms for the likes of studio mogul Jack Warner, with many of the structures dating to the 1920s. “It’s a really historic area of the lot that hasn’t really changed a lot in all these years,” says Kahn, noting the area is still in use by studio principals. “Jack Warner, when he ran the studio, privatized the first floor. That was a massage parlor that he had beneath his office.”

TCM Classic Films Tour

Where: The Warner Bros. Studio, 3400 Warner Blvd., Burbank 91505

When: Most days, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Cost: $95 for adults; $82 for children. A SoCal resident discount is available for $75

Info: (818) 977-8687 or wbstudiotour.com

Staples of the tour, such as a journey around the backlot city streets, a visit to the “Friends” set and cafe and recent additions highlighting the studio’s modern franchise films are included in the TCM trek, as is a pre-tour reception with beverages and pastries. All told, expect the tour to last about 3½ hours. A tour spokesperson says the first TCM-branded outing is scheduled for Wednesday, with trams expected to depart daily after that date. Adult tickets are $95, but there is a Southern California resident discount available for $75.

“It feels so good to have TCM here,” Kahn says. “People understand that the TCM brand is synonymous with classic film.”

Guided tours venture to some of these locations, including a helipad, a temple and a church and – if possible – stop by a set while a shoot is in action.

Paramount, Los Angeles

Guests outside the Paramount studio backlot on a guided tour. Los Angeles, US

The US’s oldest running studio, Paramount is behind mega-hits such as Titanic, Forrest Gump … and Transformers. Today, the studio covers 65 acres with 30 stages (superstition dictates that there’s no stage 13, however). There’s a $1.5m reconstruction of a New York street – with 10 distinct backdrops – as well as a huge Blue Sky Tank. Visitors are led by a guide behind the scenes on the lot; there’s also an option to do a late-night after-dark tour, with torches provided. Two-hour tours $55, advance booking required. paramountstudiotour.com . Open daily, tours take place every half hour from 9am-4pm

Atlas Film Studios, Morocco

A movie set, with a large religious figure, it's hand in the air, in the centre of shot. In the foreground a film accessory, a dolly, sit on some track.

In terms of acreage, Atlas is the world’s largest film studio. Of course, it’s easy to spread out when you’re in the middle of the desert. Located 5km west of the city of Ouarzazate, Atlas saw the filming of various dusty location-set movies: the Mummy, Alexander the Great, Black Hawk Down and several of the Star Wars saga. There are giant Egyptian-style statues guarding a replica tomb, and a huge colosseum used for the filming of Gladiator. It’s fair to say this studio is epic by name and epic by nature.

Adult £9.60, children 6-12 £6.75, studiosatlas.com . Open daily 8.15am-5.15pm (Oct-Feb) and 8.15am-6.45pm (Mar-Sept)

Warner Bros Studio, Leavesden, UK

Interior scenes at Diagon Alley at the Harry Potter World Warner Bros Studio Tour Leavesden Watford London UK

New Zealand may be a hotspot for Hobbit hunters but in the UK the Harry Potter films have turned Warner Bros Studios near Watford into a pilgrimage site for fans. The walking tour takes visitors up close to the sets, costumes and props used in the films. You can step inside Dumbledore’s office and wander down Diagon Alley, as well as taking a look at well-known magical items such as Harry’s Nimbus 2000 and Hagrid’s motorcycle. You’ll also learn about the technical side of creating one of the most successful film series of all time, with insight into the special effects and animatronics. Adults £35, children 5-15 £27, under 4s free (but ticket booking still required), family ticket £107 (two adults, two children), wbstudiotour.co.uk . Open daily, opening times vary, check website for details

Studio Ghibli Museum, Tokyo

Children play on Cat Bus – a recreation of a character from the animated film My Neighbour Totoro inside Ghibli Museum, Tokyo

The character Totoro awaits visitors at the entrance of this shrine to the work of Japan’s leading animation studio. The museum is designed to recreate the essence of the magic worlds found in many of Studio Ghibli’s films, with forest animals and sprites tucked away and waiting to be discovered by eagle-eyed visitors. Executive director Hayao Miyazaki stipulated that the museum should be “put together as if it were a film” and small children should be “treated as if they were grownups”, and these threads run through the design of each vibrant room. Fans will be pleased to know that a giant stuffed version of the Cat Bus - the grinning, hollow-bodied cat that transports the characters in My Neighbour Totoro – can be found on the second floor. Adults £6.50, children 7-12 £2.50, 13-18 £4.50, ghibli-museum.jp . Open daily, except Tues, from 10am-6pm

In our best list of film and TV studio tours, we've included tours from various places in the UK, such as London, Manchester, Leeds and Kent, because after all, great telly isn't limited to one city, it's UK-wide! If the tour isn't on your doorstep, however, you'll need to travel there. Driving isn't usually the best option — traffic jams are enough to ruin anyone's day, and petrol isn't exactly cheap — so we'd recommend taking public transport. Here are the best and cheapest ways to travel across the UK.

By coach. National Express and Megabus are two of the top coach companies in the UK, with their services operating between a multitude of UK cities. Travelling by coach is almost always cheaper than catching a train, however, it'll take you longer.

For example, if you travelled from Nottingham to Manchester (let's say you were visiting the Coronation Street tour) via National Express, a one-way journey would cost £14.40 and take five hours five minutes. However, using the exact same time and date but with a train, it would cost £29.60 and take two hours two minutes.

  • Shop coach journeys at National Express
  • Shop coach journeys at Megabus

By train. If time is of the essence, and it usually is with day trips, we recommend travelling by train. Although it's more expensive than taking a coach, there are ways to keep the cost down, for example, with a Railcard. A Railcard will save you 1/3 of the train fare and, on average, a Railcard user saves £140 per year. For more top tips on how to get cheap train tickets , take a look at our guide.

Buy a Railcard at Trainline

If you're travelling to a film or TV studio tour outside of your hometown, you might want to book an overnight stay. After all, it can be tiring to make the journey there and back in one day, plus, it gives you the opportunity to explore more of the city.

For the top places to stay in the UK on a budget, we recommend taking a look at deal of the day site, Wowcher. The site boasts deals on four star hotels UK-wide, many of them coming with offers on breakfast, evening meals, and even bubbly.

Shop hotel deals at Wowcher

UNLV unveils timeline for big studio project in southwest valley

The movie studio would be built at the Harry Reid Research and Technology Park in southwest Las Vegas, but that depends on a bill clearing the Nevada Legislature.

This aerial rendition shows the proposed Nevada Studios Campus, set to be located on the UNLV-o ...

In another push to lure more movie and television production away from California, construction on UNLV’s large studio project in southwest Las Vegas could begin as early as 2027, the university announced Tuesday.

The UNLV Research Foundation said the groundbreaking for the 34-acre Nevada Studios Campus at the Harry Reid Research and Technology Park could happen in 2027, but that is subject to the state’s film tax credit program being expanded in the next legislative session.

The Nevada Film Studio Infrastructure Act is set to be sponsored by Sen. Roberta Lange, D-Las Vegas, in the 2025 legislative session. It could create up to $95 million in annual film tax credits.

“I am eager to partner with UNLV, Birtcher Development and the MBS Group to gain legislative support in furthering economic diversification and workforce development goals in Southern Nevada, through film and television industry growth,” Lange said in a statement.

UNLV said MBS Group would operate the studio project. The company services more than 500 sound stages in North America and Europe and supports more than 900 productions a year, according to MBS Group’s website.

The development of the studio project will be overseen by Birtcher Development and Gardner Nevada Tech Park Studios, an affiliate of the Gardner Company, the developer of the 122-acre Harry Reid Tech Park.

Bringing more television and movie production to the Las Vegas Valley is seen by many as another way to diversify the region’s economy and add tens of thousands of jobs. Big players such as Sony Entertainment and Howard Hughes Holdings, the master developer of Summerlin, have signed on to movie star Mark Wahlberg’s vision of Hollywood 2.0 as well and are also planning a major movie studio in the west Las Vegas Valley.

Kim Spurgeon, the director of the Nevada Film Office, previously told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the valley has to have more studio space to lure big productions and their workforce.

Proposal for Nevada Studios Campus

The Nevada Studios Campus will be over 800,000 square feet and cost about $800 million to develop, according to estimates from April 2023.

The main 50,000-square-foot facility, dubbed the Nevada Media Lab building, will include space for vocational training, internships and workforce development opportunities for K - 12 schools and other higher education institutions, according to UNLV.

Lange said her legislation will include a provision where a certain percentage of revenue generated from film and TV productions in the state will go towards funding Nevada Media Lab’s workforce training and development programs.

“It’ll be enough to keep it running and training people,” she said in an interview with the Review-Journal.

MBS Group’s role

MBS Group said UNLV’s studio will be “similar in scale” to other flagship studio properties it manages in Los Angeles, New York, Vancouver and London

Discussions between UNLV and MBS Group have been going on for about a year, Jason Hariton, the chief studio and real estate officer for MBS Group, said.

He said the partnership made sense because of Las Vegas’ location and current workforce.

“As the entertainment capital of the world, with highly skilled technicians, Las Vegas is a natural choice to create a new film and television production hub to service the demands of a growing global content industry,” Hariton said in an emailed statement. “Nevada offers great proximity to Los Angeles, while also serving as an international destination for talent, and has a diverse range of film-able locations throughout the state.”

UNLV didn’t say how quickly the project could be constructed but Lange said her bill would require the studio to be completed within five years in order to be eligible for tax credits.

Art-A-Whirl's performance schedule is the kind of thing that keeps die-hard music lovers up at night:

"If I go see Creeping Charlie at Elias Metal Studio, will I still have time to catch Gully Boys at Indeed Brewing?"

"How far is Sociable from Bauhaus if I want to see both the Zoo Animal reunion and Mark Mallman?"

"Who are these sadistic people who booked Scrunchies at the exact same time as the Cactus Blossoms AND Curtiss A?"

Those questions all pertain to this weekend's Art-A-Whirl music lineup, which is slightly scaled back from the past couple years but remains as exciting and daunting as ever.

This year's three-day walking party around northeast Minneapolis doesn't feature any national touring acts, offered in recent years by Pryes Brewing Co. (which is sticking to an arts and crafts showcase this year), Grumpy's Bar (sticking to bar business) and the 331 Club (sticking to a scaled-back party with MCN6 TV's "Bands on Vans" mobile stage).

With just all-local talent lineups, though — and really, that's all it should be — many of the mainstays of Art-A-Whirl will still have music lovers scrambling, including both Bauhaus and Indeed breweries, Sociable Cider Werks, Twin Ignition Startup Garage (host venue for the music nonprofit DEMO ) and Elias Metal Studio.

"The music is now such a vital component to Art-A-Whirl," said Lisa Elias, the metal sculptor who was among the first to showcase live music at her studio space more than two decades ago, and for the obvious reason: "I needed a crowd," she recalled.

Geoffrey Lamar Wilson's almost-namesake band Laamar will play Indeed Brewing's Whirlygig bash on Sunday as part of Art-A-Whirl.

Nowadays, Elias said, "[AAW] has exploded in popularity, especially with all the music that is showcased by the breweries. For better or worse, it has made a huge shift in attendance."

Save time for the art as you plan ahead for the music. Here's one local music lover's cheat sheet with hour-by-hour personal picks, a tactic I've been employing for many years to avoid losing sleep. More info on the venues is below.

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Is Coming to Movie Theaters This Fall

BRB, buying tickets to the concert film before they sell out.

preview for Taylor Swift's Best Red Carpet Looks

"The Eras Tour has been the most meaningful, electric experience of my life so far and I’m overjoyed to tell you that it’ll be coming to the big screen soon," Swift wrote on Instagram. "Starting Oct 13th you’ll be able to experience the concert film in theaters in North America! Tickets are on sale now. Eras attire, friendship bracelets, singing and dancing encouraged."

She ended the message with a heart hands emoji and the phrase "1, 2, 3 LGB," which refers to a fan chant that is shouted when she sings "Delicate" on tour. Swift also shared a trailer for the concert film:

It's as yet unclear if the movie will feature any behind-the-scenes insight into the Eras Tour, or simply be a documentation of the 3-hour show. It was filmed at SoFi Stadium during her last dates on the U.S. leg earlier this month, and is directed by Sam Wrench.

Tickets for Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour are $19.89 (plus tax) for adults, celebrating her album 1989 (Taylor's Version) that comes out and October, and $13.13 (plus tax) for kids, in honor of Swift's favorite number. Per Good Morning America , AMC theaters plans to screen the film "at least" four times a day on the weekends.

Studio announces new Lord of the Rings movie, immediately gets 15-year-old fan film taken down

T he other day, we learned that Warner Bros. Discovery — the successor to the studio that years ago released Peter Jackson's iconic Lord of the Rings movie trilogy — was going back to Middle-earth with a new movie: The Hunt for Gollum , to be directed by Andy Serkis, the man who played Gollum the Ring-obsessed toad person all those many years ago.

As it happens, there's already a movie called The Hunt for Gollum , a fan film directed by Chris Bouchard and released on YouTube years ago. It covers a subplot from The Fellowship of the Ring , the first book in Tolkien's trilogy, where Aragorn and Gandalf are on, well...the hunt for Gollum, who may have information about why everybody seems to be after Master Bilbo's silly old ring.

The fan film is 39 minutes long and had been viewed 13 million times, according to The Hollywood Reporter . It opens by telling viewers that it's a non-profit film for private use and is not affiliated with the Tolkien estate, Jackson, or any studio, and is produced “solely for the personal, uncompensated enjoyment of ourselves and other Tolkien fans" in what appears to be an attempt to head off legal challenges. It didn't work, though, as Warner Bros. Discovery has already hit it with a copyright strike. Now when you try and watch the video, you see this message: “This video contains content from Warner Bros. Entertainment, who has blocked it on copyright grounds.”

Now, don't tell anybody, but another version of the fan film was uploaded years later to a different channel, although that one may come down soon too. I'm not an expert, but I doubt Chris Bouchard has much resourse here. The original Hunt for Gollum movie did feature copyrighted characters, and WBD is probably willing to press its case in court if it has to. But it's obviously a little suspect that WBD left this film alone for over a decade and only acted after it decided to make its own movie called The Hunt for Gollum . Who's to say they weren't inspired by Bouchard's work?

When conflicts like this arise, I wish established players like WBD would bring fans like Bouchard into the process, rather than try and shut them down. I don't think the existence of a 40-minute fan film made on a shoestring budget was going to disrupt the box office for WBD's forthcoming blockbuster, and embracing high-quality fan works like this could endear the studio to the fanbase, rather than make them look like corporate vultures. But so it goes.

The Hunt for Gollum may only be one of several Lord of the Rings movies WBD has on the way; they seem determined to revive the franchise on the big screen, for better or worse. The War of the Rohirrim , an animated movie about the man who built Helm's Deep, is already in production. Meanwhile, Amazon Prime Video is working on the second season of the TV show The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power , which should premiere sometime this year. The Rings of Power is completely disconnected from anything WBD is doing with the franchise. We'll be visiting Middle-earth a lot in the coming years.
