St. Francis Church

Adi Sankaracharya was born here in 788, as the only son of Sivaguru and Aryamba, a Kerala Brahmin couple. He propounded the philosophy of Advaita and extensively traveled through out India towards the efforts to unify the Hindu religion. There are two shrines in memory of Adi Sankaracharya. One dedicated to him as Dakshina Murthi and the other to the goddess Sharada maintained by Sringeri Mutt . On the same premises there is also a Brindavan where Adi Sankaracharya's mother Aryamba was cremated. The Shi Krishna Temple close by was the family temple of Adi Sankaracharya. Crocodile Ghat is the place where the acharya took his vows of renunciation.

Chinese fishing nets, also known as Cheena wala are seen quite frequently in Kochi. These are stationary lift nets fixed at a particular place operated from the shore using mechanical contrivances to fishing nets almost 20m across. Kodanad Elephant Training Centre

Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary

Vypeekotta Seminary

The remains of the Vypeekotta Seminary built by the Portuguese are preserved as a historic monument and site. The Vypeekotta Seminary is located in Chendamangalam village in Ernakulam District. There were many buildings in the premises which were destroyed during the wars in the later period. There is a church still functioning in the same compound probably built during the same period but renovated later. Many stone inscriptions were encountered from the church compound during the exploration done here in 1935. The inscriptions are fixed on a half wall in front of the church. The potteries collected from the nearby areas are housed in the Archaeological Museum, Thrissur. The remains of the Seminary with 50 cents of land was declared as protected monument in 1935.

Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary

The Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, covering an area of barely 25 km², and located about 12 km from Kothamangalam. Constituted during 1983, Dr. Salim Ali, the world famous ornithologist, is directly responsible for the wonders on display at the Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary. His famous survey of Travancore in the 1930s led to the formation of this modern day paradise for avian life. He noted that the area was rich in bird diversity and ought to be turned into a sanctuary to conserve the same. The over 300 species that reside in these tropical and deciduous forests are testament to his great vision.

Munambam Beach

The Museum Mattancherry

The Mattancherry Palace, also known as Dutch Palace, is one of the finest examples of the Kerala style of architecture interspersed with colonial influences. Located at around 12 km from Ernakulam, it was built around 1545 C.E. by the Portuguese as a present to King Veera Kerala Verma of Kochi dynasty. It came to be known as the Dutch Palace as it underwent major repairs at the hands of the Dutch. It is famous for its long and spacious halls along with its central courtyard. Puthuvype Beach

One of the less visited but yet very beautiful beach is the Puthuvype beach. administration is making a lot of efforts to promote this place as an alternative to Cherai Beach, being a suburb of the city of Kochi. A lighthouse is also situated here. The light house is situated less than half a kilometer away from the beach. This lighthouse is one of the tallest in India. There is a shallow ditch to the north of the Beach. Entry to the light house is permitted from 3 P.M to 5 P.M.  You can visit on a weekend for a perfect break from the city in peace and solitude.

F ort Kochi, in Kerala is a historical area rich in culture and diversity. It boasts of several attractions worth visiting including the oldest European church in India to the oldest active synagogue in all of Commonwealth. Among the most popular landmarks here are the Chinese fishing nets. These were introduced by Chinese traders centuries ago when Kochi was an important trading hub. Today they are the most recognizable symbols of Kochi. Right next to these nets is the St. Francis Church, the oldest European church in India. It dates back to the 16th century. It was the burial place of Vasco da Gama. Another famous church is the Santa Cruz Basilica. Known for its Gothic architecture it is a popular tourist attraction.

A cab ride for a few minutes will take you to Mattancherry. It houses the Dutch Palace built by the Portuguese and later renovated by the Dutch. If you’re looking to save some money, you can choose an A/C bus. It will take you to Fort Kochi. However, if you are carrying luggage it would become a problem. Another way to reach Fort Kochi is to take a train to Ernakulam junction.
