Excursión a Ronda y Setenil

Are you planning to book a Malaga to Ronda day trip? In that case, you’re at the right place!

I have visited Ronda myself, and as I live on Costa del Sol, close to Malaga, I am able to share lots of local insights and practical tips that will save you a lot of hassle and research time.

Read on to find out all your options for booking your day trip from Malaga to Ronda, or if you prefer to book right away, below you will find a link to a recommended local tour company offering this trip at a very affordable price.

No time to read the article?

Book your Malaga to Ronda Day Trip (+ Visit of Setenil de las Bodegas) right away! It has over 1,000 glowing reviews and the best price available.

Your Options For a Malaga To Ronda Day Trip

There are three ways you can reach Ronda on a day trip from Malaga – by using a local travel company with an organised bus tour, driving there with your rental car or using public transport.

In most cases, using the local travel company and booking the day trip online will be the most time and cost-effective option available, especially if you don’t want the extra hassle of having to drive a car while on holiday.

Below you will find a detailed breakdown for each option so that you can make an informed decision.

Option 1: Malaga To Ronda Day Trip with Local Travel Company

This is a very affordable way to see Ronda on a day trip, without having to rent and drive a car.

The company offers a convenient pick-up location in the center of Malaga, and you can upgrade the trip by adding a walking tour guide through Ronda. As a bonus point, you get to see two beautiful places in just one trip – Ronda, and then Setenil de las Bodegas, which is a unique Andalusian white town where homes have been carved into a massive rock formation. It’s certainly a place you won’t forget – you can check my photos from there below and more here .

Best of all – there is no obligation or risk involved, you can book now and pay later, and you have the option to cancel up to 24 hours before the trip. Check the availability dates from the calendar in the link below.

BOOK ONLINE :

Option 2: Malaga To Ronda Day Trip with Rental Car

If you already rented a car for your stay in Malaga or planning to do so, driving to Ronda is certainly a convenient option. The distance between the cities is just over 100 km, which should take you about 1.5 hours to drive.

Keep in mind some of the roads may be toll roads, so keep some cash in the car for this case, and check parking options in Ronda in advance, so you don’t have to stress about finding convenient parking and wasting time when already there.

Once you’re in Ronda, you can explore on your own, or alternatively, you can book an independent tour guide for the day in advance online here .

Option 3: Malaga To Ronda Day Trip with Public Transport

I would advise against using public transport for this day trip, as its nearly impossible to find connections that would make this trip convenient and fast enough to leave you time for exploring.

If you want to get from Malaga to Ronda , there are direct buses from the main station in Malaga, with tickets starting at 13 euros per person and 3 connections per day. The journey takes between 2hrs 40 mins up to 3 hours, depending on the connection. Not suitable for those who get travel sick as its passing through the serpentine roads in the mountains.

The other option is the train, which has even more limited connections. There is only one train connection leaving Malaga Maria Zambrano at 9.10 am with tickets starting at 11.90 euros one way. The journey takes nearly 2 hours.

Puento Romano in Ronda

Option 4: Malaga To Ronda Day Trip by Taxi

Another convenient, although quite expensive option is to book a taxi or uber to get to Ronda.

According to quotes online, this option would cost you between 100 to 150 euros, depending on your travel destination, pick up time, and type of car used.

Book Online: Malaga To Ronda Day Trip

If you have decided to book your day trip to Ronda from Malaga with a local travel company, you can click the link below to choose your dates and pick-up point.

Here are just some of the advantages of using this option:

  • FREE Cancellation up to 24 hours before departure for a full refund
  • SEE two places in one day trip (Ronda and Setenil)
  • 2 Departures per week – book ahead to avoid missing out on your spot
  • PAY LATER – reserve your spot now and pay later
  • Duration 8 – 10 hours which is perfect for a day trip
  • English-speaking tour guide
  • Travel with an air-conditioned modern bus
  • Check reviews for this trip from other travellers before booking
  • Option to book an extra walking guided tour of Ronda

casa don bosco, ronda, andalusia

How to Book Your Malaga To Ronda Day Trip Online

  • Head over to the day trip info page  here , and select your dates from the calendar.
  • Add the number of tickets you want for this day trip
  • Once you have the date selected, you will be shown a number of options with different departure locations, make sure you select the one which says Malaga
  • There are two options for a trip from Malaga – one with self-guided tour (cheaper), or one with a guided walking tour included – select the one you want and click book now
  • In the selected option you will also see the start time for the trip and also exact pick-up location
  • Click book now which will navigate you to a payment page
  • Once you complete the transaction, you will get a confirmation email which lists all the details you need to know for your trip

Good To Know Before Booking Your Day Trip

  • Comfortable shoes are a must when visiting Ronda
  • The road to Ronda may lead through serpentine roads in the mountains, so if you struggle with travel sickness I would recommend taking some travel medicine with you
  • Take water with you, especially if you’re travelling in the summer
  • Ronda is located 740 meters (2500 feet) above sea level, so it is much cooler than the coast, especially in fall and winter. In the summer, on the other hand, it will be very hot!
  • I would not recommend this trip for very young kids, as they might struggle with the bus journey

A day trip to Ronda from Malaga

Ronda is undoubtedly one of the finest towns in Andalusia and something of the jewel in the crown in Malaga province. Its plunging gorge, pristine white façades, stunning monuments and a rich traditional in bull fighting and wine make a day trip to Ronda one of the must-dos on any holiday to Malaga.

But getting there is no easy task. Train timetables conspire to give you hardly any time to see the town. Bus journeys are long and who relishes the idea of being on board a bus round all those bends? You can, of course, hire a car but that can be expensive for just one day. The solution? Book yourself a personalised day trip to Ronda from Malaga.

But make it a day trip with a difference

Forget that coachloads of other tourists. That large umbrella or big stick in the air. That straining to hear the guide’s talk through those crackling earphones. That waiting for the others to catch up or finding you’ve been left behind while you take a photo.

No, we mean a proper day trip with a reputable company who will give you value for money and allow you to experience the real Ronda.

Such as Costa Excursions. Founded by Peter Fischer and Thomas Liedtke in 2015, this company offers day trips to Ronda from Malaga with the difference. You’ll enjoy an adventure, experience real Spanish culture and find some personal enrichment. Not bad for a day out!

What you get on a day trip to Ronda

This day trip will depart from your hotel or apartment in Malaga or Costa del Sol or from your cruise terminal so it’s super easy from the start. On the way to Ronda, you’ll get to see scenic views of the Andalusian countryside – particularly stunning in spring and autumn – plus some very pretty villages. Don’t miss Teba, home to the Richard the Lionheart Castle, Cuevas del Becerro, perched on a ravine and the lovely white village of Cañete La Real perched on the hillside. The journey takes about an hour and a half.

And then once you reach Ronda, the real amazement starts. Views with a capital V, monuments like no other and a rich, rich history. Thomas or Peter, your personal guide (remember, it’s just you on this day trip from Malaga) will take you on a very special tour of the town and show you all the highlights.

Puente Nuevo Ronda

Insider information

Costa Excursions guides really know their stuff and you’ll be treated to your own tour of Ronda with all the information. History, gastronomy, customs, anecdotes… all recounted as you walk the streets of the town and admire the sights and sounds.

There are plenty of opportunities to take photos (and more photos) while you’re visiting Ronda. Your tour takes place in your own time and at your own pace. No rushing and no wasting time either.

Your guide will also tell you the best places to buy typical local produce including the famous Ronda wines and cheeses. And guide you to one of the best restaurants in Ronda for a lunch overlooking the town’s famous views.

Both Peter and Thomas were brought up and live in Malaga so they know what they’re talking about. They believe that a tour should be an experience that can be difficult to get in a large group. Costa Excursions was born from this idea and aims to give visitors a unique insight into Ronda.

Highlights in Ronda

For such a small place, Ronda packs in the things to see. Perhaps one of the biggest highlights is the dramatic gorge, formed by the River Guadalevín that divides the town into old and new districts. The historic Puente Nuevo bridge crosses the ravine giving you a chance to marvel at the 100m drop below you and the far-reaching views across the Ronda plains and mountains.

Ronda bull ring

In the old quarter, there’s plenty to see. The Arab Baths, built in the 13 th century and the best preserved in Spain; the old wall and gate from Ronda’s Islamic past; the Palacio de Mondragón built as a residence for the Moorish King Abomelik and used by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella later on… You can also see some impressive churches and the Cuenca Gardens with their spectacular views of Ronda and the countryside.

Back over the bridge and into the new quarter and you’ll see the famous Plaza de Toros, the oldest bullring in Spain. The museum showcases bullfighting history and you’ll see photos of famous fans including Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles. Visit the atmospheric Plaza de España and more beautiful churches.

Day trip to Ronda: What to do in Ronda for a day (itinerary)

Ronda is one of the oldest towns in Spain and one of the most impressive whitewashed towns in Andalucia . Most travelers go on a day trip to Ronda, and I assume that you are too if you’re reading this.

Since there are a lot of things to do in Ronda , you might wonder what to do in Ronda for a day so that you don’t miss out on the biggest attractions.

I have traveled to this incredible town, perched on top of both sides of the dramatic El Tajo Gorge several times and I recently spent a few weeks there to make sure I explored it in-depth.

From all there is to do, I created this one day in Ronda itinerary so that you can see the most important sites in what is one of Andalucia’s oldest towns.

Get ready to explore the epic gorge, take an iconic picture in front of the New Bridge, and visit the Arab Baths, among other unforgettable experiences. This is one of the prettiest towns in Malaga .

How to get to Ronda

The closest airport to Ronda is Malaga Airport. From there, you can either rent a car or travel to Malaga city by train and continue to Ronda by either bus or train . There are also several organized tours from most major cities to Ronda.

Getting to Ronda is a beautiful drive no matter where you come from, but particularly the windy roads from Costa del Sol are mesmerizing with incredible views.

Note that in the winter months, you might get snow or ice on parts of the road, so make sure you check the weather forecast before you set out on a drive to Ronda.

When visiting Ronda in one day, the easiest place to park is at Parking Martínez Astein , which is an indoor car park right at the entrance of Ronda on the top of the main pedestrian street.

From there, you can walk straight down past shops and restaurants to the bottom of the street where you find the historical center to your left and the viewpoints straight ahead.

However, if you want to park for free, there are options by turning right and passing the mentioned car park. Street parking is generally free in that direction.

The last time I went to Ronda, we spent a while there, so we wanted free parking and found heaps of space on the side of the road near the public swimming pool and the Mercadona and ALDI supermarkets. It took us about 15 minutes to walk into the historical center and was well worth it.

Read my complete guide to parking in Ronda if you need more information.

visit Ronda Malaga by car

Buses from Malaga to Ronda take between 1 hour 45 minutes and 3 hours from Estación de Autobuses de Málaga. Therefore, it is important to check the travel time before booking the bus to get the most out of a day in Ronda and not waste most of the day on the road.

Note that if you get easily car sick, you might want to take something for it before starting the journey, as the road up to Ronda is an endless zig-zag journey into the heart of the Serrania de Ronda mountain range.

The bus station in Ronda is only a few minutes walk from the historical center and the New Bridge. When you get out of the bus station, you basically just walk to the right and you will get to the lower part of the main pedestrian street where you find shops and restaurants.

Ronda bus station

Malaga to Ronda by train normally takes around 2 hours from Málaga-Maria Zambrano train station. The train station in Ronda is situated a few minutes walk from the top of the main pedestrian street where you find shops and restaurants. Walking down to the end of the shopping street will take you to the historical center on the left-hand side.

how to get to Ronda

By organized tour

Finally, if you do not want the hassle of taking public transportation or renting a car, there are several guided tours from the major cities nearby, like Malaga, Seville, and Granada. I will mention a few highly-rated options here for you to consider.

Besides being convenient, going on a tour means you will learn a lot about the history of Ronda from a local guide and you will have a rich experience.

Personally, I love independent travel, but there is a lot of value in a guided tour which cannot be compared to any individual day trip.

The downside, in my eyes, is that most organized tours include the bullring, but I have managed to find some tours that don’t include entry tickets, I have noted which ones below.

Ronda in 1 day

Day tours from Malaga to Ronda

Ronda Day Trip from Malaga – Group tour with hotel pickup in Malaga. This tour also swings by the unique village of Setenil de las Bodegas, built in the rock, on the way back.

From Malaga: Private Full-Day Bus Trip to Ronda and Setenil – Pickup in central Malaga city. This tour takes you to Setenil de las Bodegas, a unique village built inside the rock, on your way to Ronda. In Ronda, you get a guided tour of the town.

Private Full-Day Tour of Ronda from Marbella with Hotel pick up – Private tour with hotel pickup in Marbella which can be customized, perfect if you are a group of friends or family. Entry tickets are not included, which means you can skip the bullring.

From Marbella: The Classic Ronda Wine Experience Day Tour – Small group tour with hotel pickup. For wine lovers, this is the perfect trip combining wine tasting at two different wineries and sightseeing in Ronda.

Day tours to Ronda from Seville

Ronda Private Tour from Seville – Private tour from Seville to Ronda which includes stops in the picturesque villages of Grazalema and Zahara de la Sierra on the way back.

From Seville: Ronda Full-Day Trip – Group tour from Seville including an oil mill tour on the way to learn more about the region’s olive oil production. The tour gives you time to explore Ronda on your own too.

Ronda is a wonderful destination to visit from October to May when the temperatures are pleasant. If you’re in Andalucia in the winter months , make sure you bring layers as it can get cool in the evenings and even in the shade during the daytime.

However, the summer months can get extremely hot inland, so I would rather suggest that you visit one of the amazing coastal towns in southern Spain at that time of the year.

That said, if the only time of the year you can go is in summer, a day trip to Ronda is a lot more doable than spending more time there.

My favorite time to go on a Ronda day trip is in February/March when the almond blossoms cover the valley.

What to do in Ronda for a day

Before getting into the nitty gritty of this Ronda day trip itinerary, I want to give a little mention of one of the biggest tourist attractions in Ronda and why I do not include it in my itineraries or top things to see lists.

Ronda is home to Spain’s oldest bull ring. Many tourists visit on a tour even though they are against bullfighting and I agree, it is a big part of the Spanish culture, especially in Andalucia.

But before you make a choice, I want you to ask yourself one question.

Do you want to support bullfights?

If the answer is no, then I suggest you do not pay money for tickets that go to one purpose; promote and organize more bullfights.

Ronda bull ring is still in operation to this day, and as long as they organize bullfights, I will not stand behind any visit there that supports them economically to harm more animals.

You can support organizations working against bullfights and other activities where animals suffer and explore other sides of Spanish culture instead.

The bullring can be seen from the outside without supporting animal cruelty.

Ronda Viewpoint

Mirador de Ronda is the most famous viewpoint after the viewpoint of the New Bridge and also the first one you reach walking down to the end of the pedestrian street past the bullring.

This makes it a natural first stop no matter if you visit Ronda in one day by car, bus, or train.

The viewpoint is connected to a little park and has a pavilion overlooking the dreamy countryside with layers of mountains as a backdrop that surrounds Ronda.

Walking around the path from the viewpoint you will have continuous views and entering the Paseo de E Hemingway the last bit to Puente Nuevo, gives you a wee peak of the majestic bridge.

One day in Ronda Spain

The New Bridge is the biggest attraction in Ronda and the image most people fall in love with before visiting this historical town near Malaga .

Before crossing Puente Nuevo, you have the option to take a tour of the bridge if you want to. Personally, I have never done this tour, but it seems like you can walk inside the bridge which might be cool.

Then, cross the bridge, and take in the views from both sides. Don’t underestimate the views on the “backside” of the bridge, the gorge is absolutely breathtaking!

Once you get to the other side of the bridge, take the first right after the tourist shops and continue through the old streets until you reach a park and a viewpoint at the end of the street.

At the left end of the park, you find the stairs taking you down to the viewpoint. This is truly why most people go to Ronda in the first place!

The New Bridge was built in 1793 to better connect the new and the old side of the town of Ronda, which at that time was only connected via the old Roman bridge further down the gorge and the Arab Bridge even further down.

Day trip to Ronda

Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor

If you are going to visit one church while in Ronda for a day, make sure you see Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor. It totally blew me away.

It is a beautiful walk from the view of the New Bridge through narrow streets, orange trees, and palaces.

Walking around the church, it totally looks like a cathedral, while the front has a more modest look to it with the clock tower and wooden balconies and arches where you can see the only remains from the 14th-century Moorish mosque that once stood there.

Visit Ronda in one day

After visiting the church, it is a good time to have lunch. There is a bar next to it where you can grab a bite, otherwise, I suggest you walk straight down to the other side of the New Bridge where you came from and look for lunch around there.

A very good spot is the restaurant of the Hotel Don Miguel which is situated right on the wall of the New Bridge (I stayed there the very first time I went to Ronda and it is a really cool spot for a feed.) The views of the gorge are absolutely jaw-dropping.

Make sure you try some local wine, Serrania de Ronda is famous for its lovely wines and even though you can’t go on a Ronda winery tour , at least you get a taste of its delight.

What to see in Ronda in one day

Arab city walls

After lunch, head to the ancient city walls, if you come from the side of the New Bridge, you can walk down towards the Arab Bath and step to the right to walk along them before walking back down to the baths on the lower side of the walls.

If you come from around the church, just keep walking straight down and you will come across them and walk on the inside of the walls towards the left until you come out right above the Arab Bath.

There are sections where you can walk on the walls and you can climb up a watch tower. I think this is a really cool site in Ronda that many visitors overlook.

One day in Ronda

The Arab Baths in Ronda possibly date back to the 13th century or earlier and is one of the must-see attractions when you visit Ronda in one day.

They are said to be the best-preserved Arab Baths in Spain and after visiting a few, I can say that these are truly outstanding. Thus, I would highly recommend adding them to your list of sites to enter on your Ronda itinerary.

They are situated right by the oldest bridge in Ronda, the Arab Bridge, where you can get a peek at the Old Bridge (which is a Roman Bridge a little bit higher up that you will be heading to shortly after this visit.

Arab baths Ronda

After the Arab Baths, walk up the old steps until you reach the Old Bridge that was built around 200 years before the New Bridge on the lower part of the gorge.

From there, you can see incredible views of the gorge and walk up to a number of viewpoints, but before you do that, walk through the ancient arch at the end of the bridge and up the hill until you reach Casa del Rey Moro.

Ronda in one day

Casa del Rey Moro

When looking up what to see in Ronda in one day I don’t see Casa del Rey Moro mentioned very often and it is such a gem to catch.

Not only does the palace have wonderful gardens with peacocks walking around and splendid views, but you can walk down to the Water Mines at the bottom of the gorge through ancient stairwells passing halls with arches and windows facing the ravine.

At the bottom, it is absolutely mesmerizing with the houses on the top of the gorge reflecting in the water in front of you.

I had been to Ronda multiple times passing by this amazing place before I stopped by and actually took the tour which comes with an audio guide.

Ronda day trip

Viewpoints in Jardines de Cuenca

After visiting Casa del Rey Moro, return back down to the Old Bridge and walk up to the viewing platforms in Jardines de Cuenca.

There are multiple platforms and the higher up you get, the more spectacular it gets as you will not only see the spot you walked down to from Casa del Rey Moro, but at the top, you will also have a rewarding view of the New Bridge.

The gardens are beautifully decorated with flowers and benches. You can exit the gardens near the top and you will come out close to the New Bridge.

Sunset Ronda day trip

Grab a bite to eat before you leave

No matter what transportation you choose for your day trip to Ronda, you will likely walk up the pedestrian street. If you are hungry, there are many places to grab a quick bite, tapas, or a full meal before you leave.

Reflections on this Ronda itinerary

There is so much to do during one day in Ronda Spain that it is easy to pack an itinerary with too much to do. I think the above should fill up a good one day Ronda itinerary without making you run from place to place.

That said, we are all different and if you feel like it is too much of one day, I highly recommend skipping whatever attraction you want so that you get more time somewhere else or just walking around the old town.

Ronda is such an incredible place and it is one of the most popular day trips from Malaga for a reason. Yet, it can be worth spending a couple of days of your Andalucia itinerary there if you have the time.

Especially if you are doing a southern Spain road trip , you can use it as a base for day trips to nearby villages like Casares , Gaucín , or one of Andalucia’s hidden gems , the unique Pueblo Museo (Genalguacín) which are some of the prettiest white villages near Malaga .

Set on a plateau divided by the 120-meter-deep El Tajo gorge, Ronda is undeniably one of Spain ‘s most mesmerizing places to visit.

The beautiful town offers magnificent architecture spanning centuries and jaw-dropping views of vast valleys, home to olive groves and citrus trees.

Ronda is the perfect destination for a one-day trip from Málaga or Seville, away from the hustle and bustle of Andalucía’s busiest cities and resorts. So in this guide, we’ll take a look at the top things to do in Ronda and how to visit Ronda by train, bus or guided tour in one day.

View of the beautiful Puente Nuevo Bridge in Ronda with yellow flowers in the foreground, on a day trip from Malaga by train.

One day in April, I had just decided to go with my parents to Málaga, to drive my sister from one soccer training camp to the next. She’s a professional soccer player, yes I just had to throw that in there *proud sister here*.

Anyway, that night I saw a picture of the Puente Nuevo bridge on Pinterest. For some strange reason, it was the first I’d ever seen or heard of Ronda. I immediately clicked on the photo to find out where it was located, as it didn’t even seem real. To me, it looked like something out of Game of Thrones or some other fantasy world.

But as it turned out, Ronda was indeed real and to my surprise, located just two hours by train from where we were headed. I took it as a sign that I was meant to visit Ronda and quickly convinced my parents to come with me on a little day trip from Málaga to Ronda by train .

Since then I’ve been back several times as part of guided tours, which I’ll talk more about below.

Article overview

Málaga to Ronda by train

🌟 my top pick: private day trip to ronda, 🍷 ronda wine experience, 🚌 ronda and setenil de las bodegas, puente nuevo, cuenca gardens, mondragon palace, plaza de toros de ronda, alameda del tajo, puerta de almocábar, where to stay in ronda, best restaurants in ronda, remember to pin for later 😉.

Located just 102 km away, Ronda is one of the best day trips from Málaga . While the journey from Málaga is a comfortable 90-minute drive, public transport is also available with frequent buses and a daily Renfe train service.

Traveling from Málaga to Ronda by train is in my mind the best option due to affordability, ease of travel and stunning views of the Spanish countryside en route.

The two-hour train journey went by in a flash, I kept staring out the window the whole time, in awe of the landscape unfolding outside. However, taking the bus will be the more affordable option if you don’t suffer from motion sickness like I do.

It was really easy to get to Ronda from Málaga, we just told the guy in the ticket office at the train station where we wanted to go. The train departed at 10.05 in the morning and then back from Ronda at 16.50 in the afternoon. And best of all, the train was almost empty as we visited out of tourist season, in April. Just how I like it!

We paid 25,2€ per person for a return ticket.

One of the best things to do in Ronda Spain in one day

What to see in Ronda in one day

While Ronda, also known as the “city of the castles”, is relatively small and can be explored on foot in one day, it is brimming with culture, history and beauty. I don’t think I’ve ever visited a town with so many spectacular landmarks in such a compact area. All I can say is wow!

Offering unforgettable views over the El Tajo gorge, Puente Nuevo , an iconic bridge that was completed in 1793, connects the old Moorish part of town and the newer, El Mercadillois.

Puente Nuevo is one of three bridges spanning the 120-meter drop and features a chamber that has served as a prison throughout history. Designed by a renowned architect of the day, Puente Nuevo is among the most spectacular bridges in Spain and one of the most photographed places in the region.

One of Spain’s most famous Parador hotels sits on the cliff wall adjacent to the bridge and is well worth a visit. Paradores are a network of state-run hotels including restored Castles, Palaces, Manor Houses, Monasteries, Convents and Fortresses.

View om the impressive Puente Nuevo Bridge in Ronda, Spain at sunset

Jardines de Cuenca or the Cuenca Gardens is the name of a series of terraces, viewing platforms and windy staircases set on the cliff wall, literally hanging over the canyon, offering a different perspective of Ronda and the surrounding landscape. The garden is filled with an abundance of trees including palm, cypress and evergreens as well as featuring a wealth of stunning flowerbeds and succulents.

In summer, the gardens are best visited early in the morning to avoid the heat or in the early evening for beautiful sunsets. Wandering around in this unique garden was definitely one of the highlights in Ronda for me. It is, of course, at its most beautiful during the warmer months when all the flowers are in full bloom.

One of the best things to do in Ronda Spain in one day

One of Ronda’s most important tourist attractions is Banos Arabes or the Arab Baths, located just outside the old city walls near the Puente Arabe. This 13th-century landmark is considered to be the best-preserved Moorish Bath in Spain, with the large cauldron used to heat the water, still visible and in good condition.

The Arab Baths is a remarkable example of Moorish architecture with its high ceilings, columns and star-shaped vents, connecting Arabic ideas of cosmology with everyday life. A visit to the baths offers an insight into the history and Moorish life, with a video presentation on arrival, shown in both English and Spanish.

tours de malaga a ronda

The Mondragon Palace, which today houses the Municipal Museum, is another of my favorite places in Ronda. The museum is devoted to Ronda’s rich history and takes you on an archeological journey from its first settlers through the Roman and Moorish periods.

The beautiful 14th-century home has an impressive facade and whilst internally, several areas have been modernized for museum use, the magnificent building retains its Moorish roots and exquisite design. Once the residence of Moorish Royalty, the grounds at the Mondragon Palace also feature beautiful gardens and courtyards, complete with colorful tiles, archways and fountains.

With Ronda famed as the birthplace of modern bullfighting, Plaza de Toros de Ronda is a must-visit. The bullring stands on the west edge of town, about two blocks from Puente Nuevo and the El Tajo canyon. It is one of the oldest bullrings in Spain, inaugurated in 1785, and is home to the legend of Francisco Romero – commonly regarded as the inventor of the muleta (red cape).

The atmospheric venue makes it easy to imagine the raucous crowds in attendance during earlier centuries and a tour will introduce guests to the vast scale of the bullring as well as a brief history in the on-site museum.

While Plaza de Toros doesn’t put on bullfights as often as it once used to, it has seen some action in modern times. In 1994, US singer Madonna shot her music video, Take A Bow, in the bullring. And in 2001, it was the backdrop of an episode of the US reality TV show, The Mole.

tours de malaga a ronda

The Alameda del Tajo is one of the most mesmerizing parks I’ve visited in a long time. Its central, tiled boulevard runs from the bullring down to the cliff edge, under a canopy of multicolored leaves.

Walk all the way down to the balcony at the end and you’ll be rewarded with unforgettable views across the dramatic countryside that surrounds Ronda. Just take a look below!

Continue back towards Puente Nuevo to find two of Ronda’s most popular viewpoints, Mirador de Aldehuela and El Balcón del Coño. Strolling along this cliffside is a must-do, even if you don’t have a specific destination in mind. Just wander along and see where you end up.

tours de malaga a ronda

Puerta de Almocábar is an impressive stone gateway on the south side of town. Built in the 13th century, it is one of the most striking remains of the former Moorish defense system in Ronda. The name is derived from the Arabic word al-maqabir, which refers to a cemetery that was previously located on the square directly opposite the portal.

Walk through one of the portals to a quiet courtyard where you can sit down at a café and relax with some tapas while enjoying the view of the gateway. And of course, don’t forget to snap a few shots for Instagram, as this is one of the prettiest places in Ronda.

tours de malaga a ronda

While the highlights of Ronda can be seen in one day, I would’ve loved some more time. So for those of you who plan on spending a night or two in one of Spain’s prettiest towns, here are a few accommodation options.

Offering spectacular views of the El Tajo gorge and Puente Nuevo Bridge, Parador de Ronda Hotel is set in Ronda’s former Town Hall. Each room comes with a private balcony, with many offering views of the surrounding mountains.

Another gorgeous hotel boasting stunning views is Catalonia Ronda , set just across the street from the bullring. With its beautifully decorated rooms, infinity pool, spa and large rooftop terrace, this has to be my personal favorite hotel in Ronda!

For a more affordable option, consider Hotel Don Miguel located directly next to Puente Nuevo Bridge. It has a café and terrace with spectacular views and offers air-conditioned rooms with free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. You have to check out this location, it doesn’t get much better.

tours de malaga a ronda

After all that exploring, a bite to eat will complete your day in Ronda. With Spanish cuisine one of the best in the world, it is not hard to find an incredible place for a meal in the town and for a small place, Ronda has a surprising wealth of tapas bars and restaurants.

One of the best in town is Bar El Lechuguita , a unique tapas bar with standing room only and popular among the locals, that offers exquisite dishes from as little as a euro.

Casa Maria is a delightful restaurant with a difference as they operate with a set menu. The owners will serve you whatever has been made in the kitchen that day with the freshest ingredients purchased from the market that very morning. Guests will never have the same meal twice and the surprise is all part of the experience.

Whilst Casa Maria is a phenomenal restaurant for local interaction and home comfort, those looking for a bit more luxury can enjoy a meal at Bardal . The town’s first Michelin-star restaurant is a foodie’s dream with a unique and impressive menu. Bardal is one of the less frequented of all the Michelin-star restaurants due to its location but with such quality, it won’t stay a secret for long.

🌟 How I saved $80 on my last booking >> Right now you can sign up for the WayAway Plus membership for only $44.99, that’s 50% + 10% off the normal price. One whole year comes out to under $4 a month, which means you’ll probably earn back the annual fee on your first trip!

How to Travel from Malaga to Ronda by Train, Bus, and Car

tours de malaga a ronda

Ronda is the most famous of Andalusia's pueblos blancos  ("white villages"), but it's not the easiest city to get to in Spain. Situated overlooking the Tajo Gorge, this city has several historic bridges that afford excellent views of the Andalusian landscape, and due to its proximity to Malaga, Ronda is accessible by bus, car, or train, making it the perfect stop on your trip from  Malaga to Seville .

Adding in Ronda in this way does add quite a bit to your travel time from Malaga to Seville, but with so many  things to do in Ronda , it certainly warrants an overnight stay. Ronda can be also visited as a  day trip from Malaga .   However, due to the logistical issues with getting to and from Ronda (the roads are windy and rail connections are patchy), a guided tour is perhaps the best way to experience Ronda in a day.

How to Get from Malaga to Ronda

Although there is only one daily direct train from Malaga to Ronda—which takes two hours—there are a number of other transfers and connections that run through this Andalusian city where you can get off and explore before continuing on your trip through Spain.

The best option is the direct train offered by Spain's national train service, Renfe, which costs around $16 for a one-way ticket or about $26 if you book a roundtrip ticket. Availability only opens up about two weeks in advance, but the price doesn't change even if you buy tickets at the station on the day of your trip. It leaves Malaga in the morning and returns from Ronda in the afternoon, so you could make it a quick day trip if you wish.

If that departure doesn't work for you, several other trains leave Malaga for Antequera Santa Ana each day, and from there you can also catch a train to Ronda. This option takes about two and a half hours, depending on how long you have to wait to change trains. The best place to see all of your train options and purchase tickets, whether direct or with a transfer, is Trainline .

Slightly cheaper than the train at around $12 but still providing direct service to Ronda, several buses bring visitors to Ronda from Malaga every day. The best place to compare prices and look at bus schedules is Omio . The trip takes around three hours total by bus.

The bus route between these cities is almost identical to that of the train, but the bus follows the winding roads through mountains before heading down the valley past Ardales and Cartama.

If you have a little more time to explore Spain, you can catch the bus from Malaga to Fuengirola, then another from Fuengirola to Ronda, which takes you through two multi-colored mountain ranges. Although this takes about 40 minutes longer, it's worth it if you're a big fan of awe-inspiring natural landscapes. Plus, Fuengirola is another great city to visit along the way.

If you want to rent a car and drive yourself from Malaga to Ronda, make sure you have all the proper paperwork in order, including an international driver's permit .

Once you're ready to depart, the best way to go is by taking E-15 along the coast, past Fuengirola and Marbella to San Pedro de Alcántara; then, take the A-376 from San Pedro de Alcántara for 44 kilometers before taking the A-369 to Ronda. All of this should take about 1 hour, 45 minutes.

Since renting a car provides you more flexibility in your trip itinerary, you could consider continuing your adventure with a trip to Seville, the capital and largest city of Andalusia. It takes about another 1 hour, 45 minutes to get to Seville from Ronda, so you could explore Ronda all day long and be in Seville by dinner time.

What to See in Ronda

Without a doubt, Ronda is one of the most picturesque towns in Spain. Of all the famous "white villages" around Malaga, Ronda is by far the most famous, and once you arrive it's apparent why. The city is special because its two sides are separated by a deep ravine and connected by an 18th-century bridge. Whether you're a professional photographer or just an amateur Instagrammer, it's one of the most photogenic backdrops you'll ever encounter. Many tourists come for the day, snap a picture of the bridge, and head out, but it's worth staying the night if you have the time. Modern-day bullfighting traces its roots back to Ronda and you can visit the impressive Plaza de Toros building for a history lesson—but avoid a day where a bullfight is happening if you prefer to skip the gore. Take a look down into Ronda's deep ravine by stepping out onto one of the many viewing points peppered around the city. These small balconies jut out over the drop and locals call them balcones coños , in reference to the expletive you'll scream out when you see the plunge below you.
