Guide to Genie+ at Disneyland
Posted on Published: 04/23/2024
Over the years, Disneyland Resort has offered several programs to help you save time in line. The two latest programs (FastPass and MaxPass) were replaced with the new Genie and Genie+ program in late 2021.
Genie+, which allows you to schedule times to arrive at the lightning lanes, can be a little confusing. In addition, this program comes with an additional fee, so you need to seriously consider whether or not it is worth it for your next Disneyland vacation.
If you are traveling to Disneyland, you may want to consider adding on Genie+. This post will help you learn how to use Genie+, how it can help, and whether or not this paid service is worth it.
Any additional questions? Leave us a comment.
Disclosure : We’ve received complimentary tickets as part of our attendance at a conference, but have also paid our own way. This post contains affiliate links, and a purchase through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us. All opinions are my own.
If you haven’t yet purchased your Disneyland tickets or booked your vacation, I recommend Get Away Today . I’ve booked four trips through Get Away Today and have always had a great experience. They offer deals on Disneyland tickets and Southern California vacation packages. You can also save $10 on your Southern California vacation of 2 days or more with the code FTM10.
Is Genie+ Worth It At Disneyland?
The biggest question most people have about Genie+ is whether or not it’s worth it. A Disneyland vacation is expensive, even before you add on Genie+ as an extra cost. So, you’ll need to decide if it’s worth the added expense.
For my family vacations to Disneyland, I purchase Genie+ for our tickets. It does help you save time and allows you to experience more attractions in less time. Since I travel to Disneyland from the East Coast, I always want to maximize my time in the parks, and Genie+ helps me do that.
If you are someone who frequently visits the Disneyland parks or who doesn’t necessarily love rides, it may not be worth it to you. You’ll want to ensure you will take full advantage of it to get value out of the extra fee.
Purchasing Genie+
Unlike at Walt Disney World, Genie+ can be purchased as a ticket add-on when you purchase your park tickets. In addition, it may be available as a single-day purchase on the day of your visit.
However, that is subject to availability, and it can sell out. If you want to guarantee you’ll have Genie+ during your Disneyland vacation, you’ll want to add it on when you buy your tickets.
Currently, Genie+ starts at $30 per person per day. The price can vary based on demand.
Individual Lightning Lane
When you make a Genie+ reservation, you will receive a time window when you can return to go through the Lightning Lane entrance. However, there are also Individual Lightning Lanes, which are different.
Individual Lightning Lanes are offered for the most popular rides. Currently, at Disneyland, this is Radiator Springs Racers at Disney’s California Adventure and Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland Park .
You don’t need to have Genie+ to purchase an Individual Lightning Lane, and these attractions are not included with a Genie+ purchase. You’ll have to buy it separately if you want it.
Purchases of individual lightning lanes can be made on the Disneyland app. When you buy it, you’ll see the next available time that you’ll be able to book. Unlike at Disney World, you’ll need to choose the next time offered and can’t pick your time.
Using Genie+
Before using Genie+, you’ll want to ensure you’ve linked all of the tickets for your party on the Disneyland app. You can make Genie+ reservations for your entire group if you are all linked.
Once you scan into your first park of the day, you can make your first selection from the Tip Board section of the app. Keep in mind that you are limited to one Lightning Lane per attraction, per day.
Once you have a Genie+ selection booked, you can’t get another one until you’ve either used it, had it expire, or if more than 2 hours have passed since the time of booking. You can optimize your Genie+ by arriving early in the day and getting times as close together as possible.
What if you don’t decide to purchase Genie+? In that case, you can go through the standby line at the attractions.
Just keep in mind that there may be long lines for the most popular attractions. The single rider line is also an option, but your party members will be split up.
Difference Between Disney Genie and Genie +
The Disney Genie and Genie+ are two separate services. While Genie+ comes with an additional fee, the Disney Genie is a free service.
To use the Disney Genie, you’ll want to go onto the Disneyland app. From there, you can select the dining, attractions, and shows that are most important for you to experience.
Once you’ve chosen everything, the Disney Genie algorithm will show you the best times for you to go to these locations. During the day, it will update times as things change in real time.
This isn’t a return window, however. You won’t have a reservation and can choose to wait in the standby line.
Even if I purchase Genie+, I still use the Disney Genie service. It gives a good backup if there are attractions I want to experience more than once, or for attractions and experiences that don’t use Genie+. Since it’s free, there’s no risk and there’s minimal effort required.
Attractions at Disneyland That Use Genie+
Wondering which attractions at Disneyland currently use Genie+? This list may always change, but at publication time, here’s the list:
Disneyland Park:
- The Matterhorn Bobsleds
- Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters
- Space Mountain
- Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run
- Star Tours: The Adventures Continue
- it’s a small world
- Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway

In addition, two attractions utilize Individual Lightning Lanes. These are Radiator Springs Racers at Disney’s California Adventure and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland.

Itâs inevitable: Every spring when we pull together the Hot List , our annual collection of the worldâs best new hotels, restaurants , and cruise ships , a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. But this yearâs Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. Itâs certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchillâs office, but also the worldâs largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali. The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro
2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video
The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.
The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.
Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.
The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations
There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity. While many cities boast famous public transport systemsâNew Yorkâs subway, Londonâs underground, San Salvadorâs chicken busesâfew warrant hours of exploration. Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and youâll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.
The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the worldâs third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way. The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalinâs command, and being one of the USSRâs most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.
Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow. The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the cityâs galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum. Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us donât get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.
Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide. What better place is there to see the ârealâ Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures youâll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater. You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.
With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure . I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russiaâs mysterious history. Itâs the ultimate interactive museum.
Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)
Kievskaya station.
Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River. Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin. Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).
Mayakovskaya Station
Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention. The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roofâs expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper. Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.
Novoslobodskaya Station
Novoslobodskaya is the Metroâs unique stained glass station. Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action. The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases). Novosblod is, Iâve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.
Komsomolskaya Station
Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur. It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city. The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life. Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.
Dostoevskaya Station
Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature . The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile. However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevskyâs work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.  Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections. At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.
Chkalovskaya Station
Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again). Chrome borders all. Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft. There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects. Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display. By name similarity only, Iâd expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut dĂŠcor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.
Elektrozavodskaya Station
Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry. The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform. The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns. The stationâs art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.
Baumanskaya Statio
Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasnât suggested by the students. Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platformâs columns, the USSRâs proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing. At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for â05, â17, and â45. Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.
Ploshchad Revolutsii Station
Novokuznetskaya Station
Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics. This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area. Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market. The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The stationâs also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.
Here is a map and a brief description of our route:
Start at (1)Kievskaya on the âring lineâ (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigateâthe ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya. Backtrack to the ring lineâBrown/#5âand continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya. At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north. Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center. Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii. Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

3 Disney Theme Park Splurges to Skip Long Lines
D isney magic doesn't come cheap. But while some expenses at Disney theme parks can feel painfully high, they can also often pay for themselves â and then some. These three Disney upgrades â available at both Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, and Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida â are worth the cost.
Waiting in line at Disney might feel like a rite of passage, but it doesnât need to be. Genie+ is a paid add-on service that lets you bypass most of the line at some attractions. I use the extra time saved with Genie+ to try attractions that tend to have fewer lines. Iâm looking at you, Enchanted Tiki Room.
Genie+ prices vary by day, park and demand. Expect to pay at least $30 per person per day at Disneyland and at least $15 to $20 per person per day at Disney World. Though a family of four could easily spend more than $100 on line-skipping privileges on busy days, it can be worth it â particularly if youâre on a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Time is money, and you donât want to spend all of it waiting in line.
Line-skipping access looks to be increasingly relevant as crowds continue to grow. According to The Walt Disney Co.âs earnings report for the quarter ending in December 2023, Disneyland saw year-over-year attendance growth versus the quarter ending in December 2022.
And attendance is only expected to increase, especially as Disney continues to add rides or update themes. For instance, Tiana's Bayou Adventure is scheduled to open in Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Park in California in 2024.
2. A stay at a Disney-owned resort
Disney-owned hotels have benefits that other, nearby â off-property â hotels canât offer. That includes closer proximity to the theme parks in most cases. For example, Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and Pixar Place Hotel have their own entrance to Disney California Adventure Park.
Disney also ranks among the rare resort-area chains that don't charge resort fees .
But perhaps the most important reason to book a stay at a Disney-owned resort? Early theme park entry. Hotel guests who hold a valid theme park ticket for that day can enter the parks 30 minutes before everyone else.
In Florida, early entry is offered at all four Walt Disney World theme parks every day. In California, the benefit alternates between Disneyland or Disney California Adventure (depending on the day).
Getting to the park at opening time is critical for jumping on the most popular attractions before the lines back up. The ability to enter 30 minutes before the official opening time gives you an additional leg up.
Although Disney resorts tend to be more expensive than off-property hotels , you can find some deals. According to Disney price tracking site Touring Plans, nightly rates for Disneyâs All-Star resorts start at $133 (though they can run over $300 during peak season).
3. A character meal
If you plan to stand in line to meet Disney characters, thereâs a way to meet them without the line.
Sure, youâll pay at least $50 for the privilege, but at least it comes with food. At a Character Dining restaurant, a handful of costumed characters mosey around the dining area while you eat. Since they make a point to stop at every table, you wonât even have to wait in line; they come to you.
And with no line, the whole experience tends to be a lot more relaxed. Diners can spend more time with each character than the usual âlove and shoveâ encounter that happens when thereâs an hourlong wait to meet Mickey Mouse.
There are four Character Dining restaurants in California and about a dozen in Florida. Meal prices vary, but some of the most popular can run more than $100 per person. Note that for restaurants inside the theme parks, you'll need a ticket, too.
For example, dinner at Cinderella's Royal Table in the Magic Kingdom Park starts at $84 per adult before tax, tip and optional beverage add-ons. But the princess dining option lets you meet multiple royal ladies in one go.
Consider that not far away, you can meet Cinderella and one other princess for no additional cost (other than a park entry ticket) at Princess Fairytale Hall, but wait times tend to run from 30 to 90 minutes.
In contrast, the meal at Cinderella Castle tends to entail a meet-and-greet with four princesses. Plus, you get the unique experience of dining inside the iconic Disney landmark.
Not all meals are that expensive. At Cape May Cafe, in Disney's Beach Club Resort near Epcot , you can have breakfast with Minnie Mouse and some of her friends clad in beach attire.
For $47 per adult (before tax and tip), you can meet Disney characters and nosh on all-you-can-eat salted caramel âbeach buns,â Mickey-shaped waffles, omelets, biscuits, gravy and more. And since that restaurant is in one of the Disney World hotels, you wonât need a theme park ticket .

Automatic Refunds and No More Hidden Fees: D.O.T. Sets New Rules for Airlines
The Transportation Department issued new requirements on refunds when flights are canceled or delayed and on revealing âjunkâ fees before booking. Hereâs what passengers can expect.
By Christine Chung
The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process.
âPassengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them â without having to ask,â said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement, adding that the changes would not only save passengers âtime and money,â but also prevent headaches.
The departmentâs new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased.
Airlines for America , a trade group representing the countryâs largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines âabide by and frequently exceedâ D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.
Passenger advocates welcomed the new steps.
Tomasz Pawliszyn, the chief executive of AirHelp, a Berlin-based company that assists passengers with airline claims, called it a âmassive step forward and huge improvement in consumer rights and protectionâ that brings the United States closer to global standards in passenger rights.
Hereâs what we know about the D.O.T.âs new rules, which will begin to go into effect in October.
Thereâs now one definition for a âsignificantâ delay.
Until now, airlines have been allowed to set their own definition for a âsignificantâ delay and compensation has varied by carrier . Now, according to the D.O.T., there will be one standard: when departure or arrival is delayed by three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.
Passengers will get prompt refunds for cancellations or significant changes for flights and delayed bags, for any reason.
When things go wrong, getting compensation from an airline has often required establishing a cumbersome paper trail or spending untold hours on the phone. Under the new rules, refunds will be automatic, without passengers having to request them. Refunds will be made in full, excepting the value of any transportation already used. Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in the original form of payment, whether by cash, credit card or airline miles. Refunds are due within seven days for credit card purchases and within 20 days for other payments.
Passengers with other flight disruptions, such as being downgraded to a lower service class, are also entitled to refunds.
The list of significant changes for which passengers can get their money back also includes: departure or arrival from an airport different from the one booked; connections at different airports or flights on planes that are less accessible to a person with a disability; an increase in the number of scheduled connections. Also, passengers who pay for services like Wi-Fi or seat selection that are then unavailable will be refunded any fees.
Airlines must give travel vouchers or credits to ticketed passengers unable to fly because of government restrictions or a doctorâs orders.
The vouchers or credits will be transferable and can be used for at least five years after the date they were issued.
Fees for checked baggage and modifying a reservation must be disclosed upfront.
Airlines and ticket agents are now required to display any extra fees for things like checking bags or seat selection clearly and individually before a ticket purchase. They will also need to outline the airlineâs policies on baggage, cancellations and changing flights before a customer purchases a ticket.
The rules, which apply to all flights on domestic airlines and flights to and from the United States operated by foreign airlines, have varying start dates.
For example, automatic refunds must be instituted by the airlines within six months. But carriers have a year before theyâre required to issue travel vouchers and credits for passengers advised by a medical professional not to fly.

'Conan O'Brien Must Go' is side-splitting evidence of life beyond late night TV
Eric Deggans
Conan O'Brien dresses as a Viking in Norway. Conaco/Max hide caption
Conan O'Brien dresses as a Viking in Norway.
To be honest, when I first heard Conan O'Brien was ending his TV talk show in 2021, I assumed news that he might turn to variety shows and online programs to continue his career was some combination of face-saving and wishful thinking.
But after watching the four episodes of his new Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , it's now obvious â even to a thickheaded critic like me â that leaving late night TV really was liberating for O'Brien. He's leveraged his unique sensibility into several different podcasts, a deal with Sirius XM , specials featuring other stand-up comics and now this travel series for Max â which resembles jokey specials he did for cable channel TBS back in the day.
And as the late night TV genre crumbles under sagging viewership and the decline of traditional media, O'Brien's renaissance also provides an example for the future â where fertile comedy minds and talented performers can spread their work over a much larger canvas.
Pop Culture Happy Hour
Is conan o'brien the best 'hot ones' guest ever discuss., learning a lesson from 'hot ones'.
O'Brien already made a splash recently with his brilliantly maniacal appearance on the interview-while-eating-hot-wings show Hot Ones , slobbering over hot sauces while claiming, as he was checked over by a fake doctor, that "I'm fine! I'm perfectly f*****g fine!"
This is the place where O'Brien shines â he's called it "this strange phantom intersection between smart and stupid" â and it's on full, freakish, super silly display in every episode of Conan O'Brien Must Go .
The conceit of the show is pretty simple. O'Brien heads overseas to visit average folks in Norway, Argentina, Thailand and Ireland who had once Zoomed in to speak with him on the podcast Conan O'Brien Needs a Fan . Sometimes the visits seem like a surprise â he catches one aspiring Norwegian rapper in shorts and Crocs after popping up on his doorstep â and others seem a bit more planned, including his visit to a radio show with about four listeners in Buenos Aires.
Each episode begins with a solemn monologue which sounds like it is delivered by the film world's most eccentric voice, German filmmaker and actor Werner Herzog (he's not credited in the show and when asked, a publicist at Max shared a quote from O'Brien: "I can neither confirm nor deny the voice in question.")
The torturous accent by "Herzog" makes every line sound absurdly hilarious, describing O'Brien as "the defiler ... with dull, tiny eyes ... the eyes of a crudely painted doll ... he scavenges in distant lands, uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition and the occasional selfie."
Now that's smart. And oh so stupid.
A funhouse mirror version of a travel show

O'Brien performs onstage with a fan in Norway
Fans of O'Brien's Conan Without Borders specials on TBS already know what his style is when he tackles a travel show â throwing himself into outrageous reactions and situations while working his quirky brand of improvised conversations with hapless bystanders.
In the Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , that includes O'Brien offering screechy vocals onstage during a performance of a Norwegian emo/rap band. Or asking provocative questions of a couple therapist/sex expert. Or getting beat up in a "fight" with a 10-year-old boy in a bar.
It's all an excuse for O'Brien to unleash his energetic wit, taste for silly absurdity and skill at drawing laughs from sympathetic â if often befuddled â strangers. Whether you enjoy this special will depend on how you feel about O'Brien's style, which can feel a bit like the world's best class clown doing everything possible to make you crack a smile.
(Rent a family in Norway so they can say goodbye when he gets on a SeaCraft? Check. Get local artists to paint a mural of O'Brien, a soccer star and The Pope on the side of a building in Argentina? Double check.)
'Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend' Is A Joke Name For A Podcast â Sort Of
But what amazes in a larger sense is how O'Brien has turned his sensibility into a comedy brand to fuel work on many different platforms. And, at age 60, with more than 30 years as a comedy star, he's been released from the shackles of any genre to shine wherever he chooses â whether it's an episode of Hot Ones or a streaming service which sometimes looks like a collision between True Detective and 90 Day FiancĂŠ .
Leaving late night TV as late night left him
I'm old enough that I started covering TV not long after O'Brien made his first move from the shadows of life as a comedy writer â he worked on Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons â to succeed David Letterman in 1993 as host of NBC's show Late Night (now hosted by Seth Meyers). Back then, NBC gave O'Brien years to figure out the show, honing his smartly serious comedy in a way that would inspire then-teenage fans like Seth Rogen and Bill Hader .
O'Brien left NBC after a disastrous deal where the network tried to make him host of its venerated late night program The Tonight Show and also keep its former host Jay Leno at the network. He moved to a late night show on TBS in 2010, but even then, there was a sense that his creativity was a bit hemmed in by the format.
After 28 Quirky Years, Conan O'Brien Is Leaving Late Night
By the time he left his TBS show Conan for good, it seemed O'Brien was already caught in a trend which would hobble other late night shows â as young viewers consumed his content online and ratings on cable dropped.
Now, with a podcast and digital media company worth many millions and growing status as a TV comedy legend still willing to do almost anything for a laugh, O'Brien is proving there is a successful life beyond late night.
Particularly, if you have the talent to play the fool while leaving little doubt you're also the smartest person in the room.
