What is a car trip computer?

April 18, 2023 by carwow staff

' class=

Almost all modern cars have trip computers, but what are these systems, and how do they work?

Trip computers are fitted as standard to almost every car currently offered for sale. These electronic components display important information in the driver’s instrument binnacle about the journeys you take. The information a trip computer typically displays, include average and instant fuel consumption, the distance travelled since the computer was last reset, and the estimated range the amount of fuel in the tank of a petrol and diesel car, or power in the battery of an EV , provides.

The first electronic trip computer came along in 1978 and was fitted to the Cadillac Seville. Mechanical systems had existed prior to that, but the Seville’s ability to calculate its own fuel economy and allow the driver to input the number of miles to their destination was a novel idea.

Car trip computers have evolved and become more sophisticated since then (especially where electric cars are concerned), but the principle behind them has remained unchanged. Here, we detail what a trip computer is, how it works, and what sort of information you can reasonably expect to be fed by one.

What do trip computers do?

As the old adage goes, a trip computer does what it says on the tin: it computes data linked to a trip.

There are a five key areas that a trip computer provides information on:

  • Time : trip computers will tell you how long you have been travelling since you started your journey. If linked to the sat-nav, they can also tell you how long you have to go until you reach your destination.
  • Distance:  as you can imagine, this will tell you how far the car has travelled since the trip computer was last reset.
  • Speed:  this will tell you the average speed the car has travelled since you last reset the computer.
  • Fuel consumption: this will generally display the car’s average fuel consumption, and instant fuel consumption – IE how much fuel the car is using in the moment.
  • Range:  this will estimate you how far you can go before your fuel tank is empty, or an EV’s battery is depleted.

An electric car’s trip computer will typically show you all the information covered above, as well as the electric equivalent of fuel economy: instead miles per gallon, you will be show miles per kiloWatt hour (EG if you have a 100kWh battery and the car does 3 miles per kWh, you will get 300 miles from a charge. Some EVs show how many kWh a car is using to cover 100 miles, instead of miles mer kWh – see here for more information .

In addition to this, many EVs will synchronise their battery ranges with the sat-nav, calculating how far you can go on a charge, and where you will need to stop to recharge if you are undertaking a long journey.

Can car trip computers measure different journeys?

Many trip computers provide information for three ‘trips’: Trip A, Trip B, and since reset.

This allows all the information detailed above to be measured in separately and in parallel across three time periods. You can reset each trip individually, or reset all at once.

As an example, you may want to use Trip A to determine how far, how fast and how efficiently the car goes on each tank of fuel, resetting Trip A each time you fill up the tank.

You may also, however, want to see if a new route to work takes less time, provides better fuel economy or is faster than your usual route. You could therefore reset Trip B to determine this, while leaving trip A to keep ticking along in the background until you next need to fill up with fuel.

As for the ‘since reset’ information, many people never touch this, meaning it may show how far, fast and efficiently the car has travelled since it left the factory (or possibly since its battery was last removed).

Do also note that if you make a series of short journeys (EG pick the kids up from school, pop into the supermarket, head over to football practice) those journeys will often be treated as a single trip by the car, which will typically reset itself to a new ‘trip’ after the car has been switched off for four hours or so.

Why Your Trip Computer Isn’t Giving Accurate MPG Readings

And how to fix it

mpg log

It wasn’t just my car. During a 1289-mile round trip from Ann Arbor to New York, C/D ’s long-term Acura ILX averaged 29.5 mpg. But its trip computer claimed 31.4—optimistic by more than 6 percent. We also took the long-term Kia Sportage to Washington, D.C., and back. Over 1064 miles, the Sportage achieved 24.6 mpg according to pump and odometer readings. However, its trip computer padded that figure by 1.1 mpg to 25.7—a 4.5-percent inflation. Every fill-up was slightly optimistic.

Mark Allen, GM’s director of global energy, mass, and aerodynamics, says some inaccuracy is unavoidable. “The density of fuel varies. We have no way to measure it. Mobil might be different than Shell. Summer gas to winter gas could be a big difference.” And then there are vapor-recovery systems. With modern cars’ sealed fuel tanks, gasoline vapor accumulated in the tank is absorbed by a charcoal-filled canister. Periodically, this canister is purged by the engine. “If the weather is hot, you generate lots of purge,” says Allen. “This unmetered fuel isn’t counted by the trip computer.”

Honda uses additional inputs to calculate trip mpg. “We look at the fuel-consumed data that comes from the engine-control computer, but we also track the float sensor measuring the fuel level in the tank,” says Raj Manakkal, chief engineer for electrical and infotainment devices. He also points out that, due to temperature changes, plastic fuel tanks can expand and contract by as much as a liter. On the Acura ILX, that yields a total variation of 4 percent.

These sources of potential imprecision are real, but if you want to accurately track fuel consumption with your trip computer, you need to calibrate it [see below]. On the 335i, a service menu is accessible via an arcane procedure I found on the internet. Within that menu, I was able to change the trip-computer calibration. Changing the default value from 1000 to 1035 aligned the trip computer with reality. Sadly, no such adjustment exists to fix the BMW’s appallingly optimistic speedometer.

Calibration Station

On your next long trip, stop next to a mile marker and reset your trip odometer. One hundred or more miles later, stop once again and note how your odometer compares to the road mileage. Then, at your next fill-up, reset your trip computer and fill your tank according to this procedure:

1) Fill at the maximum flow rate until the pump clicks off.

2) Wait 10 seconds, then continue filling at the minimum flow rate until the nozzle clicks off again.

3) Repeat this procedure two more times. Ideally, you should do this using the same pump at the same station. Even with a calibrated odometer, a single fill-up has too many variables for an accurate calculation. But if you log at least three fills like this, you should have sufficient data to divide your corrected-odometer miles by the indicated pump gallons to obtain an accurate mpg. Compare that mpg figure to what the trip computer reports and you’ll have your correction factor.

What is a Trip Computer?

A trip computer is an electronic device that provides various bits of information to the driver of an automobile. It consists of an onboard computer that analyzes various functions of the car and a display screen that shows information to the driver. The typical trip computer shows constantly updated information, such as distance traveled, average speed, and average fuel consumption. Some are able to show information about more than one trip or driver and may have added functions such as low tire pressure warnings and maintenance reminders. Trip computers were once reserved for luxury vehicles, but they are increasingly available on less expensive models and typically can be added as an aftermarket option as well.

A trip computer has two main parts. The computer analyzes and records information about various vehicle systems. The display screen shows the resulting information to the driver in "real time." The display screen is usually located near the gauges, on the dashboard, or overhead. A trip computer is an extremely useful device that helps the driver stay aware of his or her driving habits and of the status of certain parts of the vehicle.

Some of the information that is usually shown by the trip computer includes distance traveled and average speed. This can help the driver figure out how much of a trip remains and if he or she is likely to arrive at the destination on time. Most trip computers also display fuel consumption information, including a rate that is averaged over time and a current, up-to-the-minute reading of fuel usage per unit of distance traveled. Some also show the distance the car can still travel before running out of fuel. This type of information is particularly useful on long trips.

The trip computer on some cars can also show additional information that may be useful to the driver. Low tire pressure warnings, for example, let the driver know if the tires are under or over-inflated. Maintenance reminders, such as remaining oil life, are often incorporated in the latest models as well. Many computers are able to switch between two separate trips or drivers and allow motorists to select which information they would like to see.

At one time, only premium car brands and models had trip computers available as an option. As technology becomes more widespread, many less expensive vehicles also come with this device standard or offer it as an option. There are also several types of aftermarket trip computers that can be added to a car that isn't equipped with one. Aftermarket devices are usually mounted in the dashboard and connected to the electrical and other systems. These units should be installed by a qualified professional.

Introduction

A trip computer is a sophisticated piece of technology that can be found in many modern cars. It is designed to provide drivers with instant access to a variety of data related to their driving experience. The information provided by a trip computer can help drivers make informed decisions while on the road, as well as enhance their overall driving experience.

A Comprehensive Look at a Car’s Trip Computer

A trip computer is essentially a miniature computer that is installed in a vehicle. It is connected to various sensors and components within the car, such as the speedometer, fuel gauge, and navigation system. The trip computer then uses this data to provide drivers with a comprehensive overview of their driving performance.

For example, the trip computer can track a driver’s average speed, total distance traveled, and fuel economy. It can also provide warnings if the driver is exceeding the speed limit or running low on fuel. Additionally, the trip computer can provide detailed navigation information and even suggest alternate routes.

Overview of the Features of a Trip Computer

Overview of the Features of a Trip Computer

The features of a trip computer vary depending on the model and make of the vehicle. However, most trip computers will include the following features:

Speedometer

The speedometer is the primary feature of any trip computer. It displays the current speed of the vehicle, as well as the average speed over a certain period of time. This feature is especially useful for drivers who want to ensure they are not exceeding the speed limit.

Mileage Calculations

The trip computer can calculate the total distance traveled by the vehicle over a certain period of time. This feature is useful for both long-distance travelers and commuters alike, as it allows them to track their progress and plan accordingly.

Fuel Economy

The trip computer can also calculate the vehicle’s fuel efficiency. This feature is particularly useful for drivers who want to maximize their fuel economy. By monitoring the fuel efficiency of their vehicle, drivers can adjust their driving habits to get the most out of every tank of gas.

Another common feature of a trip computer is navigation. Most trip computers come equipped with GPS, allowing drivers to easily find their way around unfamiliar territory. The navigation system can also suggest alternate routes to avoid traffic or adverse weather conditions.

Other Features

Some trip computers may also include additional features, such as a digital clock or temperature gauge. These features are not essential, but they can be useful additions to a trip computer.

The Benefits of Installing a Trip Computer in Your Vehicle

Installing a trip computer in your vehicle can provide numerous benefits. According to a study conducted by the University of California, Berkeley, “drivers who used a trip computer reported increased safety and improved efficiency in their driving.” Here are some of the key benefits of installing a trip computer in your vehicle:

Increased Safety

The trip computer can provide drivers with real-time alerts if they are exceeding the speed limit or running low on fuel. This can help prevent accidents and other dangerous situations on the road.

I am looking to buy a car with satellite-navigation fitted. I am confused by a lot of ads that mention a 'computer' or 'trip computer'. What do they mean by that? Does it mean that the car has satellite-navigation?

A trip computer in a car has various functions, but none of them will direct you to your destination.

They can log distance travelled, provide instantaneous fuel consumption, average fuel consumption and other variations around this theme.

You need to specifically look for adverts which mention satellite-navigation or sat-nav if you want to be told where to go.

Product Description

The Scangaugeii Is A 3-In-1 Automotive Computer That Combines A Multifunction Trip Computer, Diagnostic Scan Tool, And Up To 37 Digital Gauges In One Small Package. It Connects Easily To Your Vehicle'S On-Board Diagnostic (Obdii) Port And Communicates Directly With The Vehicle'S Computer. Not Sure If Your Car Uses Obdii Or Controller Area Network (Can)? The Unit Will Automatically Determine Which System To Use And Switch To It. The Scangaugeii Works On All 1996 Or Newer Obdii Cars, Including Gas, Diesel, Propane And Hybrid Vehicles, As Well As Vehicles With The Latest Can Systems. A Detachable Cable Allows For Easy Transfer Between Multiple Vehicles. Its Menu-Driven Operation Means There'S No Need To Memorize Complex Sequences, And No Tools Are Required For Installation.

Expandable Add-A-Gauge Technology The ScanGaugeII has been redesigned with expandable Add-A-Gauge (aka XGauge) technology. Add to the original 12 gauges by customizing the ScanGaugeII to monitor up to 25 more--depending on your specific vehicle's sensor design. Four gauges can be displayed simultaneously and can help determine fuel consumption rates, allowing you to adjust driving behavior and save gas. At the same time, keep an eye on coolant temperature, engine speed, and much more in real time. If there is a young driver in the house or friends borrow your car, the ScanGaugeII can record speeds of up to 158 mph and store the information for you to view later, so you will know just how fast your young driver or friend was going last night. If the unit was disconnected, you'll know: An indicator will be displayed in the trip data.

Gauges include:

  • Fuel Consumption Rate to 1/100th per gallon/liter
  • Vehicle speed (MPH)
  • Fuel Economy
  • Cost Per Mile/Cost Per Trip
  • Manifold Pressure (not available on some vehicles)
  • Battery Voltage
  • Engine Load
  • Coolant Temperature
  • Throttle Position
  • Intake Air Temperature
  • Ignition Timing
  • Engine Speed (RPM)
  • O2 Sensor Data
  • Hybrid Battery Charge (for Toyota Prius and Ford Escape)
  • And many more, depending on your vehicle's sensor design

Multifunction Trip Computer Four sets of data are automatically recorded on the trip computer: Current, Today, Previous Day, and Tank Trip. The "current" trip restarts after the engine has been off for more than 3 minutes. The "today" trip restarts after the vehicle has not moved for 9 hours, and the data from "today" is moved to "previous day" when you restart the car, so you don't have to reset the computer every time you begin a trip. "Tank trip" resets when you fill up the tank. It can provide you with "to empty" data and other useful information, which can be viewed any time during the trip. The trip computer also integrates information from the Cost Per Mile gauge. Simply enter how much you paid per gallon or liter of fuel, and the ScanGauge will automatically calculate the cost of your trips as you drive. The ScanGaugeII features 12 individually stored parameters, including:

  • Maximum Speed
  • Average Speed
  • Maximum Coolant Temperature
  • Maximum RPM
  • Driving Time
  • Driving Distance
  • Trip Fuel Economy
  • Distance to Empty
  • Time to Empty
  • Fuel to Empty

What Is A Trip Computer In A Car

A trip computer is a device that monitors your driving performance and lets you know if you are traveling safely or not. It does this by monitoring your speed, distance traveled before stops, and how long each stop lasts.

These computers work by analyzing your vehicle and driver data. When it sees you spending too much time in the car without being safe, it notifications the driver to take caution while driving.

Some systems even have apps for iPhone and Android that can be installed on a vehicle- wide basis . These can be used as a reminder to take breaks, or as another way to monitor driving behavior .

Uses for trip computers

what is a trip computer in a car

While not a direct replacement for a vehicle’s navigation system, trip computers do have some uses. Many car manufacturers now offer free app- based trip computer services via their smartphones.

Some app- based trip computers even allow you to input your speed and distance traveled to determine your parking spot location . This is very helpful as it can save you time and trouble looking up lots of information when you are parked or walking to your vehicle.

A lot of vehicles now have internet connectivity so the app-based trip computer can be used as a hands-free speaker unit. You can even purchase these units with built-in storage expansion through the app which makes them very easy to use.

As the title states, this article is for those who want more space but do not want to upgrade their cars size or style.

How do I set up my trip computer?

Before you can use your trip computer , you must set it up. There are a few steps to taking and setting up your trip computer.

Set up your trip computer by entering your vehicle’s street name and number in the Trip Computer app’s address field. Then, enter your driver’s license number to verify account access .

Once this process is complete, you can use your phone as a reminder app for traffic violations such as late arrivals or mis-seasons. You can also use it as an alert system for events or an event that requires entry into the event log.

Use the app on both iOS and Android devices so that you do not have any differences in functionality. When searching for trip computers, look for ones that are easy to set up and that have features needed for each individual user.

Can I customize my trip computer?

what is a trip computer in a car

No, you cannot customize a trip computer in a car. However, you can add or remove features to the computer.

Tracking is the main feature of a trip computer. You can add a new destination or lift to update your tracking.

Some features on the computer include speed alerts , traffic reports, and weather predictions. These features are not mandatory but nice to have.

Another feature that some companies offer as a custom feature is how fast people drive you when using your car’s navigation system. Some companies even tell you how many miles per hour people are going when using this functionality.

What are the different features of a trip computer?

what is a trip computer in a car

A trip computer is a device that automatically determines your speed, distance, and duration of a particular journey. It monitors how long you are driving and whether or not you are staying within your expected pace or dropping in speed.

Using your computer’s tracking software , it calculates how much time is left on your trip and displays it on your car’s dashboard. This information can be useful to other drivers who need help with their driving, such as determining whether they are staying in their speed range during the drive or if they needed to increase their speed when they arrived at their destination.

This feature is very helpful for those who drive for fun or who need help with their driving due to medical conditions or time constraints . Your car insurance company may also request this information from you in case of an accident.

Trip computers are becoming more common as vehicles have more storage space and devices to input data.

Does my car have a trip computer?

what is a trip computer in a car

There are several functions associated with the car’s trip computer. The most prominent is determining your distance from a gas station or restaurant.

While this may not seem like much , when you are running late and need to hurry to the restaurant for an early dinner, this function is key.

Another important trip computer function is determining your speed. However, unlike a vehicle speedometer and odometer, a car’s trip computer does not measure speed. Instead, the trip computer measures how long it takes to drive from point A to point B.

Where can I get one?

what is a trip computer in a car

There are several trip computers on the market, but only one is like another. The other ones are replacing the term computer with trip in a car sentence with trip computer.

The other ones use the term head unit instead of computer. They may have a different symbol for a button or sound that does something when pressed, or none at all.

Most of them look the same too, as they are just mounted on a car head unit . This is how they are connected to your phone or computer.

Your phone or computer must be able to download and install software on it, as there is no hardware change when one does. Only one must be used at a time, though.

Trip computers can help you save money on your car trips by having the right software installed on it.

What are the benefits of a trip computer?

what is a trip computer in a car

If you’re driving a car with no trip computer, you can save yourself some money by using a nearby gas station or convenience store as your trip computer.

Using a nearby gas station or convenience store is easy. Just go inside and ask for the use of the computer. Many drivers don’t have this but will give you discounted gas if you use the computer.

More cost-effective than using a nearby gas station or convenience store is buying a trip computer at your car dealership. Most dealerships have their computers set up and ready to use, just send them an email if you need help setting them up.

Who invented the trip computer?

The trip computer has been around for a while, but not everyone has heard of it before. Started as a fun way to track your driving habits, the trip computer has evolved into its own tracking system.

Today, the trip computer is used to track speeding and driving habits. It also tracks fuel usage and insurance rates as you drive!

Using your sat-nav, you set an approximate distance you want to drive each day. Your trip computer will estimate how much fuel your car will use in that time frame and set up a reminder for when you’re ready to start driving.

This system is powerful and can help you become more conscious of how much you are wasting gas and money.

Mythbusting the world of EVs: are trip computers accurate?

Here's why you can trust your electric car's battery readout more than an ICE car

EV battery range

MYTH: Trip computers are really inaccurate

The good news: electric cars almost always have an amazingly accurate trip computer and battery gauge. Petrol and diesel cars are congenital liars. A combustion car’s fuel gauge will stick cheerily on full for the first 100 miles. Then gravity gradually takes hold and the needle accelerates downward, finally taking a terrifying plunge from a quarter full to empty.

Whereas in an electric car, the state of charge meter is accurate. Drive in the same style, and each 10 per cent fall in the battery meter will get you the same distance. (Speed up and the next 10 per cent will get you less far, slow down or go downhill and it’ll stretch. Which is why I never look at the range-to-go meter – it doesn’t know how conditions will change.)

Combustion car average mpg readouts are hopeless. Divide miles driven by fuel pumped in, and you’ll find them 10–15 per cent optimistic. Whereas electric car miles per kWh readings are usually spot on. Zero the trip when you unplug, drive a full range, divide miles by the mpkWh readout and the resulting figure will be almost exactly the battery’s specified net capacity.

The bad news: the mpkWh figure is less than the electricity you pay for. There’s usually about a 10 per cent loss in the AC charging process. The trip computer is showing you battery-to-wheel energy consumption, not grid-to-wheel. Mind you, combustion cars suffer similar unaccounted losses. In calculating your input of petroleum, or output of CO2, you should use a well-to-wheel figure, not the tank-to-wheel number.

Trip computers usually accurate on fuel economy

John Paul

Q: When you road test a car and record the mileage are you going by the computer readout or are you actually doing the math?

My Toyota Camry says the fuel economy should be 25 miles per gallon in the city and 35 miles per gallon on the highway. In the first 2200 miles I have driven so far, my average city-highway combination is about 32 mpg, according to the trip computer. The next tank full of fuel I calculated the mileage the old-fashioned way and only came up with 29 miles per gallon.

Do you think the Toyota trip computer is overestimating the miles per gallon?

A:  I have found the trip computers are generally pretty accurate when compared to the refuel, drive and refuel method. Some differences can be attributed to how you fill the tank, even the type and quality of fuel used. The car's trip computer is measuring the fuel injector flow rates, engine temperature, fuel tank float level and other information gathered by the car's computer system. In theory the trip computer should be more accurate but I don't believe that is always the case.

When I do my calculation, whenever possible, I try to drive the same "route" and fill up at the same station. When refilling I fill the tank on the slow fill setting on the pump and stop when the nozzle clicks off once. Just measuring fuel economy on one trip is an estimate at best. The most accurate number comes from months of recording data.

Brake fluid replaced

Q:  My 2007 Toyota has 115,000 miles on it. When I brought it in for an oil change the shop recommended a brake fluid change. I have been driving cars for 40 years and have never had brake fluid changed. I had it replaced, but did I waste my money?

A:  Brake fluid attracts moisture and moisture causes rust. Rust and contamination in a brake system is a dangerous and sometimes an expensive combination. You probably had brake fluid changed but just didn't realize it. During normal brake servicing, when a hydraulic component is replaced the old brake fluid and any air is bled from the system, replaced by fresh fluid. In your most recent trip for service, if the brake fluid was dirty you didn't waste your money having it flushed and replaced.

Battery drain

Q:  I have been reading what you said about Subaru and their batteries going dead. I have been told, and have experienced, that if a modern car is allowed to stand unused for about two weeks that the battery will drain to zero and not start the engine. Two weeks seems like very poor engineering on the part of vehicle manufacturers. Why would anyone want a car that needs a jump-start after a two-week vacation?

A:  Your mechanic is right to a point, today's cars have more electronics in them running in the background than ever before. Parasitic drain is when these electronics never actually shut down completely. I have always felt that electrical drain of 25 milliamps is normal and anything over 90 milliamps could cause an issue. Using these numbers and a typical battery the car should be able to sit for 30 days without an issue. If you find that if your car sits for two weeks and needs a jumpstart I would suspect there is some sort of problem.

Brake sensor light

Q:  I have a 12-year-old Toyota and periodically the brake light comes on. I had the brakes checked and the shop has never found anything wrong. All they do is add a tiny bit of brake fluid and send me on my way. They told me that it is normal to add a little brake fluid from time to time. Wouldn't this indicate a leak?

A: Your shop did the right thing and checked for leaks and they are correct that brake fluid level will go down a bit over time. This happens as the brake pads wear and more fluid is needed at the brake calipers to make up for the wearing pads. More than likely the brake fluid level sensor (a float) is sticking and turning on the light. Checking the fluid probably jolts the sensor enough to let it work again.

Did you know that your car is installed with at least one computer to help you drive with as much ease and comfort as possible? Vehicle on-board computers have many different functions, but how do they work and how can you get the most out of them?

Engine Control Units (ECUs)

All modern cars have an ECU fitted. It is a computerised ‘brain’ that tweaks the engine to keep its operation as efficient as possible. The ECU, as it’s often abbreviated to, receives data from sensors and uses the information to regulate various parts of the engine. It does this to optimise performance while keeping the impact on the environment to a minimum.

It can also detect when something isn’t working as it should and can pass this on to the driver. It does this by illuminating a “Check Engine” light in the instrument display. Once the car is taken into a garage, a professional mechanic can then read a diagnostic code from the computer and solve the issue.

Older cars might not benefit from an ECU, however, as all cars leased through the Motability Scheme are brand new , customers will always have this as well as the latest mandatory safety technology.

Onboard trip computers

There will also be a built-in trip computer giving you information about fuel, letting you know when you should be thinking about finding a service station and helping you to adjust your driving style to drive more efficiently.

The display will show you the miles per gallon (mpg) you are doing as well as showing you the number of gallons (or litres) of petrol or diesel left in your tank and how much fuel mileage is left before you need to fill up again. Additionally, some trip computers can estimate the amount of time you have spent driving on an individual journey and the quantity of time left before the fuel is used up.

Subject to the make, model and year of your vehicle, the trip computer will have different abilities. In more affordable cars, a trip computer may only comprise fuel mileage information and an outside temperature gauge. In more luxury vehicles, they are often more sophisticated. For instance, some can monitor overall efficiency for separate drivers and they can check the tyre pressure, too.

Other onboard trip computers can alert you if the vehicle is due for a service. For example, the computer can show the number of miles left until an oil change is needed and then flash up a message when it is time for maintenance.

Your car is covered for regular servicing or repairs to general wear and tear. Your dealer will get in touch when a service is due.

Data protection

Many modern cars have hi-tech infotainment systems which allow you to ‘pair’ (connect) your smartphone via Bluetooth with your vehicle. This means you make and receive calls over your car’s audio system.

When you pair your phone to a vehicle with Bluetooth, the computer within the infotainment system keeps your phone number. It does this to make it easier to connect later. It also retains the contacts you dialled, as well as your call logs. But there’s just one issue: all that data is stored inside the system and is just hanging around for the next owner of the car to find.

Onboard car computer

So, just before it’s time to swap your car in for your next model , give yourself five or 10 minutes to delete your personal information. Just go into the vehicle’s settings (it will be different for every make and model) and pinpoint your smartphone. There will be an option to delete your phone. That should erase the saved contacts and call logs. Better still, look for an option to remove all user data or do a factory reset. Information on this will be in the manufacturer’s handbook. Alternatively, you can ask your dealer to do this for you when you return the car.

If you used the vehicle’s inbuilt satellite navigation system, you have one more thing to do before you wave goodbye to your car. Ensure you enter the sat-nav’s settings and erase your location history. These are good practices to keep to.

However, this privacy concern with car infotainment computer systems should be disappearing in the future as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and other systems become standard on more vehicles. These show the information from your smartphone without keeping it, so when you take your phone out of your car, none of your personal information stays behind.

All in all, most modern cars are a moving computer network. In fact, it is startling how much onboard technology today’s vehicles have.

More computers available

Aside from these common vehicle on-board computers, there are many others that your car might have, such as:

  • There is usually a computer governing a car’s automatic gearbox
  • If your vehicle has anti-lock-brakes, a computer will be reading the wheel motion and overseeing the brakes
  • Many airbags have their own computers
  • Cruise control systems use computers
  • Any CD player or radio with a digital display contains a computer

What does a car’s trip computer do?

The trip computer shows the driver important driving information on an instrument cluster display, such as the average fuel use. The computer uses this data to determine how far you can travel on the amount of petrol still in the tank. You can drive more effectively and economically with the aid of the data. Additional data on average speed or total driving duration can also be requested.

What does “trip computer” mean on my car?

A trip computer is a gadget that was either built into your car or purchased as an aftermarket addition. It calculates your vehicle’s speed, the miles per gallon you’ll get at that speed, the amount of petrol still in your tank, and how far you have to go before refueling.

Are trip computers same to sat navs?

I want to purchase a vehicle equipped with satellite navigation. Many advertisements that refer to a “computer” or “travel computer” have me perplexed. By what do they mean? Does that imply the vehicle has satellite navigation?

Although a trip computer in a car can do a number of tasks, none of them can provide you directions to your destination.

They can record the distance traveled as well as the amount of fuel consumed instantly, on average, and in various ways.

If you want to be directed somewhere, you must specifically search for advertisements that reference satellite navigation or sat-nav.

What do automobile trips A and B entail?

The efficiency between each fill for lengthier outstation excursions with numerous fills can be measured using Journey A, and the efficiency of the entire trip can be calculated using Trip B. Keep an eye on the drive cycle. Fuel efficiency will be affected by any modification to the driving cycle, including traffic and even vehicle load.

What does “travel” indicate on the dashboard?

Trip A’s mileage for a brief amount of time will be displayed on your car’s odometer. For illustration, the distance traveled between fill-ups can be represented by Trip A. This makes it easier for you to determine how many miles each tank refill lasted. It may also be an accurate approximation of fuel efficiency.

For instance, if you change gas stations and discover that your new fill-up does not last as long as your regular fill-ups, you may have received a different kind or low-quality gas. The cost is lower and the environmental impact is lessened the better the fuel efficiency.

When you fill up the tank, notice the mileage and record it if Trip A is the distance between each fill-up.

Immediately following the refill, reset the trip odometer after recording the mileage. Do this again when you have another refill. By doing so, you can keep track of any differences or patterns between visits.
